2:42
Speaker 4: Let's have fun. West Virginia it's going to join us.
2:45
Speaker 4: We are less than a week away from tax Day
2:48
Speaker 4: and the folks at the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable
2:50
Speaker 4: Families want to help out Rob James and that group
2:52
Speaker 4: will join us. Plus Jennifer far from Family Healthcare Centers
2:54
Speaker 4: is here. Your calls and text are welcome to I
2:57
Speaker 4: want to tell you about a group called Rebuilding to
2:59
Speaker 4: gather Now these folks do home repairs everything from ramps
3:02
Speaker 4: to handrails to new roofs for homeowners and Canal and
3:06
Speaker 4: Putnam Counties have been doing this for like thirty years.
3:10
Speaker 2: But you don't do.
3:10
Speaker 4: Stuff without this like this without funds. Executive director is
3:13
Speaker 4: Alison Brill. She is here along with Olivia Hubbard lebrity.
3:17
Speaker 4: Am I pronouncing that right?
3:18
Speaker 5: Yes?
3:19
Speaker 4: Who is on the board of this organizations? Well, good morning,
3:23
Speaker 4: Alison will start with you. Good morning, welcome to the show.
3:25
Speaker 5: Thanks so much for having me appreciate it.
3:26
Speaker 4: Okay, let me have you coming to that microphone just
3:29
Speaker 4: a little bit there, Okay, better, there you go, there
3:32
Speaker 4: you go, there you go.
3:34
Speaker 2: Now.
3:34
Speaker 4: Olivia and I, of course we go way back from
3:37
Speaker 4: my days in state government, so I already know her.
3:40
Speaker 4: So let's let people get to know you a little bit,
3:43
Speaker 4: tell me about you, and tell me about this organization.
3:45
Speaker 4: Then we'll bring a Livy in. I'm not going to
3:46
Speaker 4: forget you'll Livy.
3:47
Speaker 2: We go ahead.
3:48
Speaker 5: So I'm originally from Hampshire County, so in the eastern
3:50
Speaker 5: Panhandle is where I grew up, and I came down
3:53
Speaker 5: here in twenty sixteen for an internship and I ended
3:55
Speaker 5: up working a lot with Rebuilding Together Charleston, and when
3:59
Speaker 5: I graduated in twenty seventeen from Wesleyan, I moved down
4:02
Speaker 5: here and accept the position of executive director. And so
4:05
Speaker 5: I've been here since or about ten years now, and
4:08
Speaker 5: I've hopefully done a good job. They haven't given up
4:11
Speaker 5: for me yet, but I've been trying to revitalize the
4:16
Speaker 5: organization and bring them back to what they were in
4:18
Speaker 5: the heyday. A lot of people know our organization by
4:20
Speaker 5: Christmas and April, and we've changed that name from the
4:23
Speaker 5: nineties when we first started out to Christmas and to
4:26
Speaker 5: Rebuilding Together in about two thousand and five.
4:28
Speaker 4: Okay, so explain the basic mission statement of the organization absolutely.
4:33
Speaker 5: So we try to repair homes, revitalize communities, rebuild lives.
4:39
Speaker 5: So repairing homes pretty much speaks for itself, I think.
4:41
Speaker 5: So anything that is essential to make your home warmer, safer, dryer,
4:46
Speaker 5: we try and do revitalizing communities. Sometimes the work we do,
4:50
Speaker 5: and a good majority of it tries to actually revitalize
4:53
Speaker 5: the neighborhood, bring it back to life. So we usually
4:56
Speaker 5: have work on a home on a block the neighborhood
4:59
Speaker 5: hears about us. Do you work for the neighbor as well,
5:01
Speaker 5: and it brings it back to life.
5:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's not just about one home, it's about
5:04
Speaker 4: the entire blocks.
5:05
Speaker 5: The entire blocks absolutely so. Even in the rural communities,
5:08
Speaker 5: the word gets out from neighbor telling neighbor of what
5:10
Speaker 5: we do and what we did for them. And you
5:12
Speaker 5: can see a change even the royal communities as you
5:14
Speaker 5: drive down their lane.
5:15
Speaker 4: What is the most common one or two requests that
5:20
Speaker 4: you get for specific things? I mean, were the most
5:23
Speaker 4: one or two common ones?
5:24
Speaker 5: So the most common ones currently that we have is
5:28
Speaker 5: something as simple as hand rails. We actually have several
5:31
Speaker 5: people requesting handrails that can be inside or outside of
5:35
Speaker 5: the home. And the other one is also showers, So
5:39
Speaker 5: we're people are asking us to do walk in showers
5:42
Speaker 5: for them and because they can't step over that threshold
5:45
Speaker 5: of like what the baftub is anymore, and so they.
5:47
Speaker 4: Are because the changes that have happened in their lives,
5:50
Speaker 4: a medical condition, accident, something like that.
5:52
Speaker 5: It can be anybody in their you know, thirties who
5:54
Speaker 5: had an accident in medical issue that they're asking us, Hey,
5:57
Speaker 5: I can't take a shower, I don't have dignant anymore. Yeah,
6:01
Speaker 5: all the way to you know, you're a great aunt
6:03
Speaker 5: who is ninety two years old.
6:06
Speaker 4: So I think, I think it's a wonderful organization. And
6:10
Speaker 4: these services are free of.
6:11
Speaker 5: Charge, absolutely no charge to the homeowner at all.
6:14
Speaker 4: Okay, so how do people get on your list or
6:16
Speaker 4: how do how do they qualify for this?
6:18
Speaker 5: So we asked that people, of course like you mentioned,
6:21
Speaker 5: live in kana Putnham County, they have to own their home,
6:24
Speaker 5: they have to lived there for at least three years
6:27
Speaker 5: and be considered low income. So we have the income
6:29
Speaker 5: requirements on our website, so we do fifty percent of
6:32
Speaker 5: the area immediate income. And so most people who ask
6:36
Speaker 5: for applications qualified, So are applications on the website and
6:39
Speaker 5: also they can call and we can send it to them.
6:42
Speaker 4: Let me you're on the board here, and now I
6:44
Speaker 4: know you haven't been on the board for very long,
6:45
Speaker 4: but tell us about this organization, what you've learned and
6:47
Speaker 4: being on the board.
6:48
Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely, so I have been on the board about
6:51
Speaker 6: six months now, and Allison was very modest. She has
6:53
Speaker 6: done an amazing job growing the organization. We recently received
6:57
Speaker 6: a HUD grant, a federal grant that is specific to
7:00
Speaker 6: the West Side, and so we're going to be working
7:03
Speaker 6: on a lot of homes in the two five three
7:05
Speaker 6: zero two zip code under this federal grant, which is
7:08
Speaker 6: really exciting and it's a great opportunity for that neighborhood.
7:12
Speaker 6: I have learned. I've learned a lot in the short
7:15
Speaker 6: time that I have been on the board. This organization
7:18
Speaker 6: is turning thirty this year. It's the thirtieth organization also
7:22
Speaker 6: turned thirty this year, so that was exciting to learn. Yeah,
7:27
Speaker 6: but just they do like stories. If you want to
7:30
Speaker 6: check out the Facebook, we do stories of like homeowners
7:33
Speaker 6: that we've helped and different features like that, and it's
7:36
Speaker 6: just incredible. Allison told a story recently at one of
7:40
Speaker 6: our board meetings about a man who was in a
7:43
Speaker 6: power chair and we were able to put to redo
7:48
Speaker 6: his porch so that he could leave his home. He
7:50
Speaker 6: immediately went to the dollar store. He was so excited
7:52
Speaker 6: to be able to get back to the dollar store
7:54
Speaker 6: that used to be his hangout. But he told the
7:56
Speaker 6: volunteer crew that had worked He's like, I have been
7:59
Speaker 6: a prisoner in my home and you guys just released me.
8:01
Speaker 6: And it was just so powerful to hear, and that's
8:03
Speaker 6: true of many of the homeowners that were able to help.
8:07
Speaker 4: And those are things, Olivia and Allison, things that we
8:10
Speaker 4: take for granted, those of us that are able bodied
8:13
Speaker 4: and get up and go, as you said, to the
8:15
Speaker 4: dollar store, go to McDonald's, whatever the case may be,
8:17
Speaker 4: go to grocery store, go to church. But when something
8:22
Speaker 4: happens like that, especially if it's I would think if
8:25
Speaker 4: it's somebody that this is a sudden occurrence in their home,
8:29
Speaker 4: it's a sudden illness or sudden injury or something like
8:32
Speaker 4: that that has left them. As you said, this gentleman
8:34
Speaker 4: liked to go to the dollar store. It's something he
8:36
Speaker 4: did maybe a couple of times a day. Told suddenly
8:38
Speaker 4: you used to term prisoner in your own home. I mean,
8:41
Speaker 4: this is life changing for these folks, it is.
8:44
Speaker 6: And the organization we have we do a lot of
8:48
Speaker 6: those type of repairs with volunteers too, which is really
8:51
Speaker 6: powerful to see these groups come. It can be like
8:55
Speaker 6: a employer that does a volunteer day and you can,
8:59
Speaker 6: you know, work on somebody sport or put in handrails
9:01
Speaker 6: or things like that. And then they also if it's
9:04
Speaker 6: a roof or something like that, we'll use contractors, but
9:07
Speaker 6: to see those volunteer groups meet and really make a
9:11
Speaker 6: huge change in somebody's life, Like I think it's powerful
9:13
Speaker 6: for everybody involved.
9:15
Speaker 4: And I would think that when these different like I
9:18
Speaker 4: know the United Way has their Day of Giving, many
9:21
Speaker 4: many companies do, private companies do things like this where
9:24
Speaker 4: they take a day and they go help out with
9:26
Speaker 4: this organization or that organization. I would think that that
9:28
Speaker 4: would be ideal for some of them just to come
9:30
Speaker 4: in kind of help you out. And you don't do
9:31
Speaker 4: these things though without funds, and so you need funds.
9:35
Speaker 4: Where can people donate, whether it's time, cash or monetary
9:41
Speaker 4: donation or materials, Where can people donate and get involved?
9:44
Speaker 5: Absolutely so just the basic when people think of donate cash.
9:48
Speaker 5: We have a system on our websites. You go on
9:49
Speaker 5: a website, it will probably pop up say you want
9:52
Speaker 5: to donate, So that's someplace they can donate as well.
9:55
Speaker 5: Can also nail a check or things like that and
9:57
Speaker 5: get back to them. But also we're looking to improve
10:01
Speaker 5: the local volunteerism. We know people love to volunteer. We
10:04
Speaker 5: know there's people with skills, there's people without skills, and
10:06
Speaker 5: just good hearts and want to help their neighbor, so
10:09
Speaker 5: they can call our office, email us carry your pigeon.
10:11
Speaker 5: At this point, we'll get back to them. And so
10:14
Speaker 5: we're trying to look for either organization's businesses anything like that,
10:18
Speaker 5: churches just to volunteer and get back to the community.
10:22
Speaker 5: We try and partner them with a homeowner that best
10:25
Speaker 5: suits their skill sets and needs and such. So we're
10:27
Speaker 5: not just going to throw you on a project without
10:29
Speaker 5: ever talking to you. We talk to you and your
10:31
Speaker 5: organization a lot before we pick a project.
10:33
Speaker 4: Is there an age for volunteers, because I mean, is
10:36
Speaker 4: there like an age requirement you have to be like
10:38
Speaker 4: twenty one or we.
10:39
Speaker 5: Actually have at least fourteen. So we have a lot
10:42
Speaker 5: of church teams come in the summer months and we
10:45
Speaker 5: teach the youth how to build like a wheel trip.
10:49
Speaker 4: I say that because I'm bringing this up all the
10:50
Speaker 4: time on the show. If you are graduating high school,
10:53
Speaker 4: you have to have so many community service hours and
10:57
Speaker 4: there are various things you can do in the community.
10:58
Speaker 4: Is this something that they would qualify for some point?
11:01
Speaker 7: Yes.
11:01
Speaker 5: So in the past we've actually worked with usually groups
11:04
Speaker 5: of teenagers and usually they have like one adult with them.
11:07
Speaker 5: From either their school or one of their parents or something.
11:09
Speaker 5: And so they can work on a project if they
11:10
Speaker 5: get in touch with us, and we can try and
11:12
Speaker 5: match them to a project, and we certify that, yes,
11:14
Speaker 5: you did volunteer with us. Here are the hours you
11:16
Speaker 5: volunteered with us.
11:18
Speaker 4: We're talking with Olivia and Allison's rebuilding together. The Dave
11:22
Speaker 4: Alan Show in five eighty Live has brought you in
11:24
Speaker 4: part by Morgan to Morgan with more than twenty billion
11:26
Speaker 4: dollars recovered. They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more.
11:29
Speaker 4: Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. We had
11:32
Speaker 4: a text here it said, our home is in desperty
11:34
Speaker 4: of a floor section replacements in different rooms. I think
11:38
Speaker 4: our foundation is sinking causing is Does your organization help
11:41
Speaker 4: with things like that?
11:42
Speaker 5: So we do help with flooring issues such as that.
11:45
Speaker 5: That's one of the repairs that a lot of people
11:46
Speaker 5: have contacted us about. We do, not, however, work on foundations,
11:50
Speaker 5: just partially because we have our own insurance and we
11:53
Speaker 5: can't work on foundations because that's a little too sensitive
11:56
Speaker 5: if something went wrong with a contractor or something. And
11:59
Speaker 5: also so there's a limit of what we can input
12:01
Speaker 5: into a home for monetary wise, we can only go
12:04
Speaker 5: up to a certain amount on projects depending on the
12:07
Speaker 5: funding that we have. So we won't work on a foundation,
12:09
Speaker 5: but we can usually work on the flooring.
12:11
Speaker 4: Okay, and I'll give a big shout out. We have
12:13
Speaker 4: several people that advertise with this company. I know the
12:16
Speaker 4: folks at Foster Foundation Repair do a fantastic job, so
12:20
Speaker 4: to the to the text there, if you want to
12:23
Speaker 4: try to get in touch with those folks. I mean
12:24
Speaker 4: they're a company, so now they can't do it for free,
12:26
Speaker 4: but they may be able to help you out the
12:28
Speaker 4: Foster Foundation. There's so many that do great things and
12:31
Speaker 4: that advertise with us. But I want to kind of
12:33
Speaker 4: get in my there as well. What's your website so
12:35
Speaker 4: people can learn more?
12:35
Speaker 5: So our website is www dot rt WV dot org. Okay,
12:41
Speaker 5: such as we've ailding together West Virginia dot work.
12:44
Speaker 4: And you're on social media, Yes, We're on.
12:46
Speaker 5: Facebook and were on Instagram, so we pretty have pretty
12:49
Speaker 5: active social media's there so people can kind of follow along,
12:52
Speaker 5: which we encourage. This month, we're going to be sharing
12:54
Speaker 5: a lot more about what we do, the work we
12:56
Speaker 5: do and the impact it does in the community.
12:58
Speaker 4: All right, Well, you're always welcome back in the show,
13:00
Speaker 4: show any time you want to come back. Alison Brill
13:02
Speaker 4: and Olivia, I appreciate you both for being here with
13:05
Speaker 4: us today.
13:05
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
13:06
Speaker 4: Keep doing great things in the community.
13:07
Speaker 6: Thanks so much for having us.
13:08
Speaker 4: It's nine twenty. Do you either one of you need
13:11
Speaker 4: your taxes done? By the way, unfortunate.
13:14
Speaker 5: I'm good, I'm good.
13:14
Speaker 2: Okay, I'm done. Okay.
13:16
Speaker 4: I was going to say, because we've got a guest
13:17
Speaker 4: coming up next hour that's offering service. Is similar to
13:20
Speaker 4: what you do that are trying to help people out
13:22
Speaker 4: to get your taxes done. So just throwing it out there.
13:24
Speaker 4: If you know anybody does you might want to stick around. Well,
13:26
Speaker 4: take a break back after this on the Voice of

Speaker 8: Dick Durbin. Now Durbin has a new scheme. He's doing
13:49
Speaker 8: the dirty work to benefit corporate megastores. Durbin's bill could
13:53
Speaker 8: cut corners on your credit card security, putting your personal
13:56
Speaker 8: data at risk. Big chain retailers and warehouse total want
14:00
Speaker 8: to inflate their profits, and liberal Dick Durbin would help
14:03

16:10
Speaker 4: for Sustainable Families. You got it, Yeah, all right, I
16:13
Speaker 4: rehearsed that and everything.
16:15
Speaker 2: So welcome to the show. Thank you, Thank you so much.
16:18
Speaker 2: It's great to be here.
16:19
Speaker 11: Yeah, this is so the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families.
16:25
Speaker 2: We are a.
16:26
Speaker 11: Nonprofit that was basically created to do what's called the
16:31
Speaker 11: VITA program, which is volunteer income Tax Assistance, which means
16:34
Speaker 11: that we provide free income tax preparation for load of
16:37
Speaker 11: moderate income or load of moderate individuals in families with
16:42
Speaker 11: load of moderate income individuals and families in West Virginia
16:46
Speaker 11: and so next Wednesday. And this is the first time
16:50
Speaker 11: we've ever done anything exactly like this. Well, I've formed
16:55
Speaker 11: basically a coalition, an alliance, if you will, of a
17:00
Speaker 11: bunch of different We have a few sites in the
17:02
Speaker 11: charlest scenario that do free income tax prep and so
17:06
Speaker 11: several of them. We're going to get together at the
17:08
Speaker 11: United Way of Central West Virginia on Wednesday from ten
17:11
Speaker 11: am to four pm and we're going to do a
17:13
Speaker 11: day where folks can just walk in and if they
17:16
Speaker 11: haven't got their taxes done, they can get their taxes
17:19
Speaker 11: done and we'll be there to.
17:21
Speaker 2: Help them out.
17:21
Speaker 11: And honestly, if you haven't done your taxes by April fifteenth,
17:25
Speaker 11: it's probably a reason. And that reason is probably because
17:28
Speaker 11: you suspect that you owe money.
17:29
Speaker 4: You owe money, or maybe or maybe you can't afford
17:31
Speaker 4: to have them done, right.
17:32
Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we we're at we're in nonprofit.
17:37
Speaker 2: We're absolutely free.
17:40
Speaker 11: If you do owe money to the irs, we can
17:41
Speaker 11: kind of guide you through that process to make it
17:44
Speaker 11: as painless as possible. I can't promise you that we're
17:47
Speaker 11: not going to be able.
17:48
Speaker 2: To mitigate what you owe. We're going to be able to.
17:49
Speaker 4: You're not in that part of the business.
17:51
Speaker 11: No, No, we're going to make it a lot easier.
17:54
Speaker 11: So that yeah, that's what we do. So we have
17:59
Speaker 11: the United Way and the Maker Center which is on
18:03
Speaker 11: the west side on Patrick Street.
18:06
Speaker 2: And oh no, it just lost my just left my mind.
18:11
Speaker 11: Oh Pride Community Services, which is it's down near the
18:15
Speaker 11: ballpark and Logan is where they come from their Logan.
18:19
Speaker 4: I'm very familiar with the Pride organization from Logan and
18:22
Speaker 4: I spent a lot of time. Yeah, I spent a
18:24
Speaker 4: lot of time with the folks with with the with
18:26
Speaker 4: with Pride of Logan County and they've kind of expanded
18:30
Speaker 4: beyond that to go to other areas now. But they're
18:32
Speaker 4: based in Logan.
18:32
Speaker 2: You're right, right, yeah, but now they are.
18:35
Speaker 11: They have an office in Kanna County and they've been
18:39
Speaker 11: kind enough to help us do taxes. They've actually been
18:41
Speaker 11: doing taxes with me at the library at the Big
18:44
Speaker 11: Library downtown for all of taxis and and and they're
18:49
Speaker 11: kinder still because they're going to do our free income
18:53
Speaker 11: prep tax Day, last Minute tax Day at the United Away.
18:58
Speaker 4: So when you say it's it's for lower income people, Yeah,
19:03
Speaker 4: so how do you what's what's the income? I mean,
19:06
Speaker 4: how do you how does that work?
19:07
Speaker 11: Well, we're we ask that folks keep it to under
19:11
Speaker 11: seventy thousand.
19:12
Speaker 2: Okay, so if your income is under.
19:14
Speaker 11: Seventy thousand, then come on down. We also don't do
19:20
Speaker 11: anything super complicated. We want to help as many people
19:25
Speaker 11: as we can. And the VITA program, which is actually
19:28
Speaker 11: funded by the I r S.
19:29
Speaker 2: We actually we get it. We're not the i r S.
19:31
Speaker 2: I'm not the IRS.
19:32
Speaker 11: We get a grant from the I r S to
19:34
Speaker 11: do free income to exprop And there's certain things that
19:36
Speaker 11: we are allowed to do in certain things we're not
19:38
Speaker 11: allowed to do. So we can't do any anyone that
19:41
Speaker 11: has rental properties. We can't do anyone that has a farm,
19:46
Speaker 11: we can't do anyone that has We're not going to
19:49
Speaker 11: do anyone that has a form called a K one,
19:52
Speaker 11: which if you don't know taxes and don't know what
19:54
Speaker 11: that means, that's fine. But if you do, if you
19:57
Speaker 11: get a K one, you know what a K one is.
19:59
Speaker 11: It's a distribution from a partnership, a state or trust.
20:03
Speaker 11: And if you have a really complicated business, then you know,
20:07
Speaker 11: we want to help as many people as possible. So
20:09
Speaker 11: we're not going to do any super complicated schedulecye businesses.
20:13
Speaker 4: But you can do you can do businesses. I mean
20:15
Speaker 4: as long as it's a simple type business.
20:17
Speaker 12: Yeah.
20:18
Speaker 11: Yeah, if you if you have all of your expenses
20:20
Speaker 11: and everything together pretty well, and you're for example, if
20:24
Speaker 11: you you're an uber driver or something like that, Yeah,
20:26
Speaker 11: come on down.
20:27
Speaker 2: But if you have but if.
20:28
Speaker 4: You're Toyota of West Virginia probably.
20:30
Speaker 2: Right, yeah, yeah, any kind of self employed business.
20:35
Speaker 11: Just to not to get too far into the nitty gritty,
20:37
Speaker 11: but if you have an inventory that you keep track of,
20:40
Speaker 11: or if you have if you have anything that has
20:44
Speaker 11: depreciation on it, yeah, then that's not what I'm here.
20:48
Speaker 4: And it's like pretty much somebody you mentioned an uber driver.
20:50
Speaker 4: I'm picturing somebody that maybe is in business for themselves,
20:54
Speaker 4: like a one man, one woman operation. Yeah, it's kind
20:56
Speaker 4: of simple, uh cort of thing. Maybe I don't want
20:59
Speaker 4: to I don't want to throw it anything out there
21:01
Speaker 4: because I don't want anybody to say, well, he says,
21:02
Speaker 4: my profession is simple, that's not what I mean. But
21:05
Speaker 4: I mean if it's a simple you know, lawn care
21:08
Speaker 4: or something like, you could probably do that, right.
21:10
Speaker 11: Yeah, anything like that's kind of a gig economy thing,
21:13
Speaker 11: then that might put it.
21:14
Speaker 2: That's what we would do.
21:15
Speaker 1: Yeah.
21:15
Speaker 2: Absolutely.
21:16
Speaker 4: Primarily you're looking for individuals, I mean that you're looking
21:18
Speaker 4: to help individuals.
21:19
Speaker 11: Right, Yeah, We're going to help as many people as
21:22
Speaker 11: we can. From ten to four we've got We've got
21:26
Speaker 11: volunteers from all over. And also I would be remiss
21:30
Speaker 11: Chemic Credit Union, which is in Dunbar. They also do
21:33
Speaker 11: free income tax prep and you might give them a
21:37
Speaker 11: call as well.
21:38
Speaker 2: Between now and Wednesday.
21:39
Speaker 11: I think they're going to be doing it on their
21:41
Speaker 11: own up to the day anyway, so Chemic Credit Union,
21:45
Speaker 11: I would give them a call. And then the United
21:48
Speaker 11: Way Central West Virginia, which if you don't know, it's
21:51
Speaker 11: near the restore and Greens Feed and Seed. Ten to
21:57
Speaker 11: four we're going to be doing it and just just
21:59
Speaker 11: come on down. I don't know exactly how chaotic it's
22:03
Speaker 11: going to be, because this is the first time we've
22:04
Speaker 11: done anything like this. It could be that half a
22:07
Speaker 11: dozen people show up, and it could be that one
22:09
Speaker 11: hundred people show up. We're open for closer to one hundred,
22:13
Speaker 11: but let's not go crazy. But it is, we'll get
22:16
Speaker 11: you in and out of there pretty fast too.
22:18
Speaker 4: What would make it for the tax prepares Rob What
22:22
Speaker 4: would make it easier on you guys if people should
22:24
Speaker 4: I mean, you don't want people just showing up going, hey,
22:26
Speaker 4: I need to do my taxes. Yeah, you got to
22:28
Speaker 4: have something you got to bring some sort of paper
22:31
Speaker 4: in right.
22:31
Speaker 11: Yeah, absolutely, So the easiest thing that you can do
22:35
Speaker 11: to facilitate it is make sure that you have your
22:37
Speaker 11: IDs ready, make sure that everybody that's listed as a
22:42
Speaker 11: tax payer so the primary person in the spouse is
22:46
Speaker 11: present and available to sign. We really can't, you know,
22:50
Speaker 11: we can't let people go home if we had to
22:52
Speaker 11: verify everyone's identity. So we can't let people take things
22:56
Speaker 11: home and have them sign it and bring them back.
22:57
Speaker 11: Just make sure you know that you they're either there
23:01
Speaker 11: with you or if you've made or you've made arrangements
23:03
Speaker 11: to get them there that day. And make sure that
23:07
Speaker 11: you have all your tax paperwork, that's any kind of
23:09
Speaker 11: income documents, anything from the State of West Virginia that
23:14
Speaker 11: gets your refund fright. For example, the state of West
23:16
Speaker 11: Virginia has something called the MV one and what it is,
23:19
Speaker 11: it's a rebate on your personal property tax if you
23:22
Speaker 11: pay your personal property taxes on online, that's.
23:25
Speaker 2: Let your cars taxes on your car.
23:27
Speaker 11: And so if you if you have that form and
23:31
Speaker 11: I'd go digging through the mail for it, bring it
23:34
Speaker 11: in because we in order to get you that rebate
23:37
Speaker 11: on your taxes, we got to see the form, so
23:39
Speaker 11: look for it. If you're if you're thinking about coming in,
23:42
Speaker 11: make sure that you look for it. Look for the
23:44
Speaker 11: MV one form. And if you don't have it, but
23:47
Speaker 11: you suspect that you did pay your taxes online, then
23:50
Speaker 11: you can go on the West Virginia tax website, which
23:55
Speaker 11: I think is my Taxes WV dot gov. And if
24:00
Speaker 11: if that's not it, you can just you can google it.
24:02
Speaker 11: Make sure anytime you're dealing with taxes, make sure that
24:05
Speaker 11: the web address that you're looking at is a dot
24:08
Speaker 11: gov address when you want to get anything official. But
24:13
Speaker 11: go ahead and you can go on that website. You
24:16
Speaker 11: just have to put in your name, your the tax
24:20
Speaker 11: ticket number, which you can find on the Kanaw County
24:22
Speaker 11: Shaff's office website, and your driver's license number. And if
24:25
Speaker 11: there is a form out there that you can use
24:27
Speaker 11: for your taxes, you'll be able to find it.
24:31
Speaker 4: Are you still in need of volunteers to help out
24:34
Speaker 4: or are you good on that? I mean somebody, if
24:36
Speaker 4: somebody's listening right now, they say, hey, this sounds like
24:38
Speaker 4: a great thing. I have the skill set to do
24:40
Speaker 4: this on an accountant or whatever, and I would like
24:41
Speaker 4: to do this could I come help. Do you still
24:44
Speaker 4: need people to do that?
24:46
Speaker 11: We don't need people this year. Everybody, every volunteer that
24:49
Speaker 11: we have is certified by the IRS.
24:51
Speaker 2: So it's a whole thing. I got you.
24:53
Speaker 11: You get to take a you have to take a
24:55
Speaker 11: certification test in order to do it, and then you know,
24:58
Speaker 11: we want you to go through a training and so
25:01
Speaker 11: there's just.
25:01
Speaker 2: Not really time I get it this year.
25:04
Speaker 11: But however, I'm not going to turn any volunteers away
25:07
Speaker 11: next year. So if you're listening to this and you
25:10
Speaker 11: you think, oh, I'd love to do that, I'd love
25:12
Speaker 11: to help out the community, because, believe it or not, David,
25:14
Speaker 11: this is hard to believe. There are people out there
25:16
Speaker 11: that love doing tax returns. There are people out there
25:19
Speaker 11: that will do tax return after tax return after tax return,
25:23
Speaker 11: and I'm one of them.
25:24
Speaker 2: I'm happy to sit down here. I like what you like.
25:26
Speaker 3: Man.
25:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody everybody said that, like my coworker TJ. Meadows,
25:30
Speaker 4: And I'm sure he wouldn't mind for me saying this.
25:33
Speaker 4: Would probably give up one of his children for an
25:36
Speaker 4: opportunity to do a to do a spreadsheet. It's his thing.
25:40
Speaker 4: And when we are having a meeting, the other.
25:42
Speaker 2: Day about some things, and he said.
25:44
Speaker 4: I'll do a spreadsheet. I'll do a spreadsheet. And I'm like,
25:46
Speaker 4: you're you're sick, you know, just so you know, but
25:48
Speaker 4: everybody likes what they like.
25:49
Speaker 11: I'm absolutely the same way. I love a good spreadsheet. Yeah,
25:55
Speaker 11: but if so, But if you are that kind of person,
25:57
Speaker 11: if you're the kind of person like you know, and
25:59
Speaker 11: there are there are people in you know, they're probably
26:02
Speaker 11: pretty grumpy about it, but secretly they love it. Because
26:05
Speaker 11: there are people that are like, oh no, I just
26:06
Speaker 11: do my taxes online, and then somebody in their family
26:08
Speaker 11: finds out about it and they're like, can you do
26:11
Speaker 11: my taxes? And then you know, it kind of snowballs
26:15
Speaker 11: from there and suddenly they're responsible for half a dozen
26:18
Speaker 11: families during tax season, and you know, again they're like,
26:21
Speaker 11: oh okay. But the truth is is they probably enjoy it.
26:25
Speaker 11: They enjoy kind of the the numbers aspect of it
26:29
Speaker 11: or the puzzles aspect of it. So if you're one
26:30
Speaker 11: of those people, please get in touch with me our
26:34
Speaker 11: James at WVASF dot org.
26:38
Speaker 2: That's the West.
26:39
Speaker 11: Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, So it's WVASF dot org
26:44
Speaker 11: and it's our James, and reach out to me, and
26:46
Speaker 11: I'm happy to I'm happy to have any volunteers. I
26:49
Speaker 11: will talk to you after tax season and then we'll
26:53
Speaker 11: work on it. And also if you have any questions
26:55
Speaker 11: about the event, if you're like, well, I'm not sure
26:58
Speaker 11: if I qualify, so on and so forth, you can
27:00
Speaker 11: also email me. I would prefer you email me and
27:04
Speaker 11: ask me before you show up and we have to
27:07
Speaker 11: figure it out live. So yeah, definitely, any questions about
27:10
Speaker 11: it or any questions about the organization, please feel free
27:13
Speaker 11: to email me.
27:14
Speaker 4: All right, And the event is on tax Day, but
27:16
Speaker 4: one are the hours again in the location.
27:18
Speaker 11: It is going to be Wednesday, April fifteenth, the United
27:21
Speaker 11: Way of Central West Virginia, and we're going to start
27:24
Speaker 11: around ten, we're going to end around four. I will
27:27
Speaker 11: say that events like this depending upon how many people
27:32
Speaker 11: find out about it, and that's why I'm here, of course,
27:36
Speaker 11: that it tend to be very popular. So you might
27:39
Speaker 11: consider showing up a little bit early. Don't come out
27:42
Speaker 11: in the parking lot at six am, but if you do,
27:45
Speaker 11: bring donuts.
27:46
Speaker 2: Yeah.
27:47
Speaker 11: I've been doing taxes for ten years, both privately and
27:51
Speaker 11: for this nonprofit, and I can tell you that when
27:55
Speaker 11: it's taxiason, there is never a time when I went
27:59
Speaker 11: into work to taxes and there.
28:00
Speaker 2: Wasn't somebody waiting for me.
28:02
Speaker 11: It doesn't it doesn't matter how early I get it,
28:06
Speaker 11: get there, there's always that there There used to be
28:09
Speaker 11: somebody in the parking lot waiting for me anytime I
28:11
Speaker 11: got there. So you know, and we realize that's going
28:14
Speaker 11: to happen. But yeah, if you want to get your
28:16
Speaker 11: taxes done early, get in and out come early. These
28:19
Speaker 11: people are really good. We got people that have been
28:22
Speaker 11: to on taxes for many, many years. So what that
28:26
Speaker 11: means is that they're pretty fast, and that means that
28:29
Speaker 11: we are going to do our best to get folks
28:32
Speaker 11: in and out of there as soon as possible because
28:34
Speaker 11: we want to help the most people we can. And
28:37
Speaker 11: you know, in that six hour timeframe. So you know,
28:41
Speaker 11: if you if you want it done, if you want
28:43
Speaker 11: it done, first come in early, because it's going to
28:45
Speaker 11: be first come, first serve, walk in and you will
28:50
Speaker 11: be amazed by at the speed in which we can
28:53
Speaker 11: get it done for you.
28:54
Speaker 4: Rob James, West, Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, appreciate you
28:57
Speaker 4: being here, man.
28:58
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
28:58
Speaker 11: Oh, thanks, thanks a lot, good good to see you
29:01
Speaker 11: and thanks for having me. Good luck with everything on Wednesday.
29:04
Speaker 11: It's probably gonna be a little zany, but hopefully we
29:08
Speaker 11: can contain the chaos at least a little bit. But
29:10
Speaker 11: if you need your tax is done. We hope to
29:12
Speaker 11: see you.
29:12
Speaker 4: There all right, good luck to good luck to you
29:15
Speaker 4: on everything by twenty four minutes away from ten. We'll
29:18
Speaker 4: take a break back after this on the Voice of
29:20
Speaker 4: Charleston WCCHS.
29:21
Speaker 13: Are you a physical therapy assistant and looking for an
29:24
Speaker 13: opportunity in orthopedics, wellness and athletic care. If so, Generations
29:28

29:31

33:02
Speaker 4: Good morning, folks, welcome to the show. Good morning, Autumn,
33:04
Speaker 4: welcome to job.
33:05
Speaker 2: Good morning.
33:06
Speaker 4: Then, Jennifer is a regular. This first time you've been
33:08
Speaker 4: on the show though, right, yeah, all right, So we
33:10
Speaker 4: need to get to know you we already know, Jennifer. Okay,
33:12
Speaker 4: so we can get to tell us about Autumn Rocker.
33:14
Speaker 16: So I'm Autumn Rocker with Curate Designs, an in full
33:19
Speaker 16: service interior design studio, and I'm working with Family Care
33:24
Speaker 16: on their upcoming maternal health fare on a special giveaway.
33:28
Speaker 4: Okay, comit a little closer to the microphone for me there,
33:30
Speaker 4: All right, Jennifer, tell us about what you get going
33:33
Speaker 4: on at Family Health.
33:34
Speaker 17: So this Saturday at the birth center at one o
33:37
Speaker 17: eight Washington Street West in Elk City, we are having
33:40
Speaker 17: a maternal healthfare in our parking lot at our birth
33:43
Speaker 17: center and it'll be an opportunity for people to meet
33:46
Speaker 17: the midwives and dulas and the staff that are there,
33:49
Speaker 17: have some resources that are available, and one of the
33:52
Speaker 17: things that we're most gracious for is that Autumn Rucker
33:56
Speaker 17: Curate Designs. She's giving away a full nursery makeover during
34:00
Speaker 17: the maternal health fare.
34:01
Speaker 4: All right, So how did you get hooked up in
34:03
Speaker 4: this at them?
34:04
Speaker 16: So I have known Jennifer and we have just kind
34:07
Speaker 16: of had got to talking about the maternal health fare.
34:10
Speaker 16: And my heart has always been for mothers as I'm
34:13
Speaker 16: a mother myself and It just has always been something
34:16
Speaker 16: that I've wanted to be able to do, is to
34:17
Speaker 16: give back to the community, and it just seemed like
34:20
Speaker 16: the perfect way to be able to do that.
34:22
Speaker 4: So complete makeovers what you're saying right, Yeah, for the nursery,
34:25
Speaker 4: what kind of things would I guess it would depend
34:27
Speaker 4: on the particular situation. But what kind of things are
34:31
Speaker 4: we talking about a particular that you think you might
34:33
Speaker 4: do with this kid one?
34:34
Speaker 16: Yeah, So I want to be able to work with
34:36
Speaker 16: the mother and help them come up with a design
34:38
Speaker 16: for their nursery that they love, to help them personalize
34:41
Speaker 16: the nursery for their child. It will include a crib,
34:45
Speaker 16: the bedding, a rug, wal art, a chair for the mother,
34:50
Speaker 16: the room painted and just put together for them to
34:53
Speaker 16: where they're ready for their baby when they come home.
34:55
Speaker 4: Jiffer, I want to talk about this birthing center that
34:57
Speaker 4: you've got of there. We'll get into the other things.
34:58
Speaker 4: Is you're a regular on the show, as I said,
35:00
Speaker 4: with family health care centers, but talk about this birth
35:02
Speaker 4: and center. But in case people haven't heard you talk
35:04
Speaker 4: about it in the past.
35:05
Speaker 3: Sure.
35:06
Speaker 17: So Family Care began almost thirty seven years ago with
35:09
Speaker 17: four midwives that thought women should have a choice in
35:11
Speaker 17: the way that they gave birth. Started in Putnam County,
35:14
Speaker 17: it's grown to four counties, twenty two locations, five mobile
35:18
Speaker 17: medical units. We service about forty schools and the birth
35:21
Speaker 17: center has just been that's the essence of family care.
35:23
Speaker 4: That's how we began.
35:25
Speaker 17: So about seven years ago we moved to the second
35:29
Speaker 17: floor of where doctor Patten's office is, or what used
35:31
Speaker 17: to be the former Kelly Men's shop, and there are
35:33
Speaker 17: two birthing tubs there. We have three midwives that are
35:36
Speaker 17: on staff. We have three obgyns. So if a mother
35:40
Speaker 17: wants to give birth in the birthing tub, or she
35:42
Speaker 17: just wants to give birth, we have like a it's
35:44
Speaker 17: a suite where there's a bed, there's the tub, there's
35:47
Speaker 17: a waiting area for the family. The family can be
35:50
Speaker 17: in the room when they give birth if they want to.
35:53
Speaker 17: And if something does happen where all of a sudden,
35:56
Speaker 17: we need to go to a hospital. Women's and Children's.
35:58
Speaker 17: Is someone that has a good baseball arm, they could
36:01
Speaker 17: throw a ball and hit Women's and Children's from the
36:03
Speaker 17: bus center. And we just want people to know that
36:05
Speaker 17: there are options.
36:07
Speaker 2: All right.
36:07
Speaker 4: We had a text here you said, can anyone register
36:10
Speaker 4: for the nursery or only expectant parents.
36:12
Speaker 17: I think we allow anyone to register. I mean, I
36:14
Speaker 17: think my mother would go for me if when I
36:16
Speaker 17: was pregnant, she would have gone.
36:17
Speaker 4: They may know somebody, absolutely, So if somebody gets this,
36:22
Speaker 4: then they can gift it, I guess to whoever they want,
36:24
Speaker 4: right and you know, if they find somebody that needs it,
36:26
Speaker 4: definitely and remind us ofeing how how you'll register during
36:29
Speaker 4: this event?
36:30
Speaker 1: Right?
36:30
Speaker 4: Absolutely?
36:31
Speaker 17: And one of the things that we just want people
36:33
Speaker 17: to do if they want a register for this awesome
36:36
Speaker 17: giveaway and what an incredible heart Autumn has to do this,
36:39
Speaker 17: but we want them to just take a tour the
36:41
Speaker 17: bus center just so that they can see what it's about,
36:43
Speaker 17: have some interaction with the menwives, and just really see.
36:48
Speaker 17: And I don't want to say that it's an amazing
36:49
Speaker 17: place because that's where I work, But truly I didn't
36:53
Speaker 17: know about it, David. I think I shared that with you,
36:55
Speaker 17: you know, sitting on city council, I didn't know that
36:57
Speaker 17: we had this facility that was a Charleston And I
37:01
Speaker 17: just want so many people to understand what is available,
37:04
Speaker 17: the options that they have, the resources that they have,
37:07
Speaker 17: and all that we ask is that they just take
37:08
Speaker 17: a tour the bus center.
37:09
Speaker 4: How many you give me a ballpark figure of how
37:11
Speaker 4: many people utilize this on a yearly basis just a
37:14
Speaker 4: ballpark figure.
37:15
Speaker 17: So twenty. I do know the twenty twenty four statistics
37:20
Speaker 17: we had. I believe it was two hundred and eighty
37:22
Speaker 17: nine berths. Now does that mean that all of them
37:24
Speaker 17: were birthed at the Burth Center. No, because some complications happen.
37:28
Speaker 17: But this month in April, we are expecting twenty women
37:31
Speaker 17: to give birth at the birth center. So that would
37:34
Speaker 17: be a record for us if there was twenty women
37:36
Speaker 17: that gave birth that way.
37:37
Speaker 4: Okay, I'll give you an opportunity to talk about the
37:39
Speaker 4: other things that are going on with your company that
37:42
Speaker 4: with family health care. So what else you got going on?
37:46
Speaker 17: Well, one of the biggest things that we've opened right
37:48
Speaker 17: now is called prescription Care, and that's our pharmacy. We've
37:52
Speaker 17: opened it in the loop in Saint Albans. So we
37:55
Speaker 17: have our convenient Care, which is our urgent care, our
37:57
Speaker 17: regular family practice, and then we have prescription Care. What
38:00
Speaker 17: we're noticing is that there are lots of larger chains
38:04
Speaker 17: that are closing and people need to have access to
38:06
Speaker 17: pharmacy or pharmaceuticals. So we have been blessed to have
38:11
Speaker 17: a grant funding that helps people that can't afford their
38:14
Speaker 17: medication copase. And I know that I've shared with you
38:17
Speaker 17: my previous experience having brain tumors and my parents' mortgage
38:20
Speaker 17: their home to keep me alive. When you have someone
38:22
Speaker 17: that walks up to you and says, my cope is
38:24
Speaker 17: eight hundred dollars and I can't afford that. If it's
38:26
Speaker 17: life saving medication, I believe everyone should have a way
38:29
Speaker 17: to live. So we've been blessed to have some medication
38:33
Speaker 17: assistance and we're actually trying to partner with folks to
38:36
Speaker 17: let them know that we have this funding that's available
38:38
Speaker 17: and it's holistic care. We're doing food as medicine. We're
38:42
Speaker 17: seeing tremendous results with people that are learning how to
38:44
Speaker 17: cook health here with our health and community education program,
38:47
Speaker 17: and we're seeing their A one c's lower, we're seeing
38:49
Speaker 17: their blood pressure lower, and people are actually getting access
38:53
Speaker 17: to fresh foods and vegetables through a Fresh Connect card
38:56
Speaker 17: that's fifty dollars that allows them to go to a
38:58
Speaker 17: grocery store and buy fresh freets.
38:59
Speaker 4: One Alway's got a lot of good stuff going on.
39:01
Speaker 4: That's what I'll do, thank you, all right, so give
39:02
Speaker 4: us the details on this event again.
39:04
Speaker 17: It is the Maternal Health Figure. It'll be at one
39:06
Speaker 17: o eight Washington Street West and the Burst Center parking lot.
39:10
Speaker 17: We'll have lots of free giveaways, we will have tours,
39:13
Speaker 17: we will have resources for mothers and expectant mothers, and
39:17
Speaker 17: then also talk about some opioid settlement funds that we
39:20
Speaker 17: received for those that are either in active addiction, long
39:22
Speaker 17: term recovery, that are pregnant or want to become pregnant,
39:25
Speaker 17: that we have some funding to help them and their
39:27
Speaker 17: families as well.
39:28
Speaker 4: All right, Well, Autumn, hats off to you, as Jennifer said,
39:31
Speaker 4: for volunteering to do this, because it's a great thing.
39:34
Speaker 4: And I'm sure that whoever whoever gets that's that's that's
39:38
Speaker 4: quite a substantial thing that you're doing there, So you
39:40
Speaker 4: should be very very proud of yourself and your company.

43:24
Speaker 4: Okay?

43:25

43:26
Speaker 4: I know you did an interview with with with the
43:28
Speaker 4: Mountain earlier this morning.
43:29
Speaker 2: Yes, So how many hot dogs did you get in
43:32
Speaker 2: two hundred and eighty four over two and a half years.
43:35
Speaker 4: Two hundred and eighty four for two and a half years, okay,
43:38
Speaker 4: And when you came out with your list, you practically
43:42
Speaker 4: broke the internet. We did because people were upset. They
43:46
Speaker 4: were because you didn't choose their play.
43:49
Speaker 2: That's correct.
43:50
Speaker 4: And for those that missed all that, what was the
43:52
Speaker 4: criteria for what made the best West Virginia hot dog?
43:55
Speaker 20: Well, you had to have Slaw on your chili, I
43:58
Speaker 20: mean on top of your dog, you know. So it
44:00
Speaker 20: was the it was the mustard, the onion, the hot dog,
44:03
Speaker 20: chili sauce or chili, whatever you want to call it,
44:06
Speaker 20: top with Coleslaw. So so a lot of people are like,
44:08
Speaker 20: where's Yans Yeans up there at That.
44:11
Speaker 4: Was probably the one that you got the most pushed
44:13
Speaker 4: back on. Yeah, Yans. And was there another one?
44:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, there's just a There was a handful of others,
44:20
Speaker 2: just the.
44:20
Speaker 4: One that really people were that was.
44:21
Speaker 2: The one people upset about.
44:22
Speaker 20: I'm like, well, they don't serve Slaw because you know,
44:25
Speaker 20: there's a line that's a Slaw line.
44:27
Speaker 4: Apparently around Ripley somewhere in that general apparently even a
44:31
Speaker 4: little bit higher.
44:31
Speaker 20: Okay, okay, but it's true. But you know you can
44:34
Speaker 20: find Slaw. So we went to the Northern Panhandles, Eastern Panhandle,
44:38
Speaker 20: and that story about that is also in the movie.
44:42
Speaker 20: We talk about it we talked about it quite a bit,
44:44
Speaker 20: and yeah, we had two million people talk about in
44:47
Speaker 20: the first forty eight hours about that list. Because we
44:50
Speaker 20: came out with the top fifty at first, two.
44:53
Speaker 4: Million people engaged in this.
44:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, two and a half million over the course of
44:58
Speaker 2: the week.
44:58
Speaker 4: Two and a half million people for a couple of
45:01
Speaker 4: wise guys from West Virginia.
45:03
Speaker 2: That's correct.
45:04
Speaker 20: Yeah, And you can find the list at half on
45:06
Speaker 20: wv dot com.
45:07
Speaker 2: Okay, the top one hundred.
45:09
Speaker 20: We made at one hundred because people of nostalgia were
45:11
Speaker 20: looking like, where's my favorite place? Like where's Stewart's, you know,
45:15
Speaker 20: where's King Tut Where's all these other different places that
45:19
Speaker 20: I cherished as a child. You know, it's like where
45:21
Speaker 20: do they rank on the list? Because you don't know
45:23
Speaker 20: anything about hot dogs? And I'm like, well, apparently, if
45:26
Speaker 20: you don't leave your county you can try other hot dogs.
45:29
Speaker 20: You won't really know what's the best out there unless
45:31
Speaker 20: you try it. So we tried the entire state eight
45:34
Speaker 20: at every place you can think of. And this movie
45:37
Speaker 20: is a ninety minute movie about everything behind the scenes
45:40
Speaker 20: where we went the first two and a half years
45:42
Speaker 20: of this journey, and then what happened afterwards, like we
45:44
Speaker 20: meet the governor, we get a proclamation about, you know,
45:48
Speaker 20: visiting mom and pop restaurants and just to support your
45:52
Speaker 20: local restaurants and eat a West Virginia style hot dog.
45:55
Speaker 2: And he even says what a West Virginia style hot
45:56
Speaker 2: dog is?
45:58
Speaker 4: Has having known you Jay a long time, you're a
46:00
Speaker 4: California guy, I am, yeah, But you had roots to
46:03
Speaker 4: West Virginia right, absolutely, yes, but you were primarily California gap,
46:07
Speaker 4: So somebody could say, what the hell does a California
46:10
Speaker 4: guy know about West Virgina.
46:11
Speaker 20: True, I eat a lot of hot dogs. I've been
46:13
Speaker 20: in working in baseball for twenty one years. I started
46:17
Speaker 20: ten years with the Sacramento Rivercats and Oakland A's affiliates.
46:21
Speaker 20: I also worked in a restaurant industry for twelve years
46:24
Speaker 20: prior to getting into into baseball, So I have kind
46:27
Speaker 20: of a pretty good background for hot dogs and just
46:29
Speaker 20: food in general. And what's to me a good taste
46:33
Speaker 20: and a good feel of what's going on. So if
46:35
Speaker 20: you catch out on TikTok or YouTube at half fun
46:38
Speaker 20: WV every day, I check out new food and new
46:41
Speaker 20: restaurants every day, supporting local places. But you know, that's
46:44
Speaker 20: an extension of what we did back from during COVID
46:47
Speaker 20: when we did the hot Dog Tour.
46:48
Speaker 4: Well, oddly enough, one of the sponsors of the show's
46:50
Speaker 4: not hot dogs, though, it's a folks at Husband's Pizza
46:52
Speaker 4: and this month at Hustin's get a large eighteen inch
46:54
Speaker 4: pepperoni pizza and a large toss out of twenty one
46:56
Speaker 4: ninety nine dining pickup or get delivery a Husband'sizza dot com.
47:00
Speaker 20: And you, folks, do you think Hussan's Pizza might make
47:02
Speaker 20: me a hot dog pizza with the West virgin Sta
47:06
Speaker 20: toppings on it?
47:07
Speaker 4: All right, folks at Hustin's, are you listening.
47:09
Speaker 2: That's a challenge, I challenge. I'll be there. I'll make
47:12
Speaker 2: a video about it.
47:13
Speaker 4: Colonel Ron Hughes is your hook up here for Hustin's.
47:15
Speaker 4: That's a guy that has the account here, so colonel, Colonel,
47:19
Speaker 4: and he'll take care of you on that. Hell you
47:21
Speaker 4: wanted to do West Virginia hot dogs? Yeah, I get that,
47:24
Speaker 4: but hot dogs is a lot like pizza. Depending on
47:27
Speaker 4: where you go, they could be very different. And you
47:30
Speaker 4: coming from the baseball background, yeah, I mean some of
47:33
Speaker 4: these places are nuts when it comes to what they
47:35
Speaker 4: put on hot dogs.
47:36
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I know that there's crazy ones, but you.
47:39
Speaker 4: Kept it to the simple West Virginia.
47:41
Speaker 2: Know, we wanted to try everyone's chili, everyone's slaw.
47:44
Speaker 20: You know, each thing is unique. You know, how do
47:46
Speaker 20: you prepare a hot dog? Is it a boiled hot dog?
47:49
Speaker 20: Is it going to come out wet? Or is it
47:51
Speaker 20: a grilled beef hot dog which has got maybe some
47:54
Speaker 20: good smokes, some good grill marks on it. You know,
47:56
Speaker 20: it makes a difference of how hot dog tastes and
47:58
Speaker 20: how you prepare it. Is it a steam bun is
48:01
Speaker 20: it a bunnet's on the grill that's buttered.
48:03
Speaker 2: On one side?
48:03
Speaker 20: I mean it's you know, there's so many different ways
48:05
Speaker 20: to really trick a hot dog into being better than
48:08
Speaker 20: what it should be.
48:09
Speaker 2: And so that's what that's what the tour was about.
48:12
Speaker 2: We found the best ones.
48:13
Speaker 4: And I'll just tell you this, and I'm sure you've
48:15
Speaker 4: heard this before. If you want a non restaurant hot dog, Okay,
48:20
Speaker 4: here's what you gotta do. You got to go to
48:22
Speaker 4: southern West Virginia. You got to look for some lady
48:25
Speaker 4: probably by the name of Mabel or Ethel. She's got
48:28
Speaker 4: to have coulots. You know what coolots are. Coulots are
48:31
Speaker 4: kind of like shorts that go to the ankles. Okay,
48:35
Speaker 4: a lot a lot of Baptist women. I grew up
48:37
Speaker 4: in free will Baptist churches. We called it free meal Baptist.
48:40
Speaker 4: So you gotta find that. You gotta have the glory bun,
48:42
Speaker 4: the hair up. And that's where you'll find the best
48:45
Speaker 4: hot dogs. And they use the serving with like a
48:47
Speaker 4: bag of chips and a fried apple pie. Yeah, that's
48:50
Speaker 4: there's where you got to go.
48:51
Speaker 2: You know how many people have told me you need
48:52
Speaker 2: to visit my church. Yeah, great hot dog. I'm like,
48:56
Speaker 2: I need to do this.
48:57
Speaker 4: There you get, Well, maybe you'll do that next time,
48:58
Speaker 4: and maybe you'll get a little religion in there. Who knows.
49:01
Speaker 2: Maybe that's the sequel.
49:03
Speaker 4: All right, So what is next for the have fun?
49:04
Speaker 2: Guess there will be a sequel?
49:06
Speaker 20: But like I said, we are, you know, looking for
49:09
Speaker 20: always the best West Virginia style hot dog.
49:11
Speaker 2: And it doesn't have to be in West Virginia. Okay,
49:14
Speaker 2: So I mean.
49:14
Speaker 20: There are other places you can get West Virginia style
49:16
Speaker 20: hot dogs. And I found a place in Myrtle Beach,
49:19
Speaker 20: but I didn't realize this. It's actually in surf side.
49:22
Speaker 20: There's an actual bar.
49:24
Speaker 2: It's a West Virginia bar dedicates everything in West Virginia.
49:27
Speaker 4: I'm aware of the sundown. I have been there, but
49:29
Speaker 4: I went there for.
49:30
Speaker 2: The first time. Of course they did. I had to,
49:32
Speaker 2: and my god, it is so good.
49:34
Speaker 4: All right, So my man Tony the Taylor onto the show. Yes,
49:38
Speaker 4: just sent me the information on the Slaw line. It's
49:42
Speaker 4: an actual sign near the nearest spotlightes of culinary and
49:45
Speaker 4: cultural boundary known as a Slaw line, where it crosses
49:48
Speaker 4: Interstate seventy nine. South of this point, West Virginians are
49:50
Speaker 4: smart enough to order coleslaw and their hot dogs, while
49:53
Speaker 4: north of this line people have no idea what a
49:54
Speaker 4: real West Virginia hot dog gets.
49:56
Speaker 2: Yes and no. He is true on that line.
49:59
Speaker 20: However, you if you ask for it, they have slaw
50:02
Speaker 20: and you can put it on type of your dog.
50:03
Speaker 20: Not all restaurants have the slaw, but we found it.
50:06
Speaker 20: We found the restaurants that did have them. And some
50:08
Speaker 20: people don't even put have real hot dog chili. So
50:11
Speaker 20: you go to an eastern panhandle, they have beans in
50:14
Speaker 20: their chili. So it's kind of like, you know, you
50:16
Speaker 20: have to explain to them what exactly is a hot
50:19
Speaker 20: dog chili without the beans?
50:20
Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So you can find it
50:22
Speaker 2: out there. It's just it took a lot of work.
50:24
Speaker 4: Tex says, if you thought about traveling across the country
50:27
Speaker 4: and doing hot dog challenges a West Virginia hot dog
50:29
Speaker 4: versus each state's local hot dog and am flying test
50:33
Speaker 4: with local resid that goes back to what I was
50:34
Speaker 4: saying Jay about my wife is originally from Chicago. A
50:38
Speaker 4: Chicago dog is a totally different animal. They're good.
50:42
Speaker 2: You like them. I love them, man, I don't like
50:45
Speaker 2: them that much.
50:45
Speaker 4: I love it.
50:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's like there's like with pizza.
50:48
Speaker 4: You know, there's no really good or butt. I like
50:49
Speaker 4: a good West Virginia dog.
50:51
Speaker 20: You are you a deep dish pizza guy like Chicago
50:54
Speaker 20: pizza gugcause I'm like a flat New York or style.
50:57
Speaker 4: But well, what's odd is my wife, who's from Chicago
50:59
Speaker 4: likes the flat New York styles. Okay, see yeah, but
51:02
Speaker 4: in the Chicago pizza I know, in my hometown of Logan,
51:05
Speaker 4: we have the great debate, you know between Parkway and Morrison's. Uh,
51:10
Speaker 4: the two are owned by the same guys. By the way,
51:12
Speaker 4: the same gap. The thing about a Morrison's hot Dog,
51:15
Speaker 4: and we got to close with this is you don't
51:18
Speaker 4: I don't put slaw on it because the sauce the
51:20
Speaker 4: chili is so good the slaw takes away from it.
51:23
Speaker 4: That's true, man, that's true.
51:24
Speaker 2: It can happen.
51:25
Speaker 4: Give us the details on the movie.
51:26
Speaker 2: Yes, the details. It's over at the all of the theater.
51:29
Speaker 2: It'll be Saturday, of course, this Saturday.
51:31
Speaker 20: And to get tickets you basically have to get on
51:34
Speaker 20: over to HALFTHUNWV dot com and try.
51:37
Speaker 2: To get some tickets down there by signing up.
51:40
Speaker 20: And it'll be at seven o'clock at the Aubun Theater
51:43
Speaker 20: this Saturday.
51:44
Speaker 2: And we're excited to have it.
51:45
Speaker 4: Still, the big questions people are going to ask you
51:48
Speaker 4: is are you gonna have hot dogs?
51:49
Speaker 20: Yes, we are the number the the number one hot dog.
51:53
Speaker 20: Boge's Drive Range will actually be serving hot dogs out
51:55
Speaker 20: front before the movie starts. So the door's open at six,
51:58
Speaker 20: the movies at seven, So Bogus be out there from
52:00
Speaker 20: five th number.
52:01
Speaker 4: One hot dog. Yes, I said, what according to your list, Yes.
52:04
Speaker 20: But you need to really get him out there at
52:06
Speaker 20: the driving range with a big smokers act, because things
52:08
Speaker 20: are a little bit different when you got the smoke.
52:10
Speaker 4: All right, the Mere at the Arts Center right there
52:13
