2:11
Speaker 8: Good morning. Dave's good to see again.
2:12
Speaker 4: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show,
2:14
Speaker 4: especially when we're not out in the parking lot in
2:16
Speaker 4: the extreme heat or the extreme cold collecting things. We
2:20
Speaker 4: love doing it, we love doing it, but it's nice
2:22
Speaker 4: to have a little sit down in the studio.
2:23
Speaker 8: Absolutely, absolutely.
2:24
Speaker 4: Lisa Pack is here with us. Good afternoon, good morning,
2:27
Speaker 4: Good hello. I said it's Monday, It's Monday all the round.
2:30
Speaker 4: Good morning, all right, thank you both for being here.
2:32
Speaker 4: Tell us about Women on a Mission. This is what
2:34
Speaker 4: you're here to talk about this morning. Jason. I'll start
2:36
Speaker 4: with you. What is Women on a Mission?
2:37
Speaker 8: Women on a Mission is it's a luncheon that we
2:41
Speaker 8: put on every single spring that highlights ladies throughout our
2:46
Speaker 8: community that are going over and above their normal jobs
2:50
Speaker 8: what they normally do in the community. They go over
2:53
Speaker 8: and above in service, in volunteering and ways to help people,
2:57
Speaker 8: and we recognize that and they are huge part of
3:01
Speaker 8: our community and helping in many different ways. And we
3:04
Speaker 8: just want to take a luncheon on April twenty ninth
3:08
Speaker 8: to recognize these ladies and set them apart a little
3:12
Speaker 8: bit and just celebrate what they do for us.
3:14
Speaker 1: LEASULD.
3:14
Speaker 4: Talk about your involvement in this.
3:17
Speaker 9: I've been involved since we started it. This is our
3:19
Speaker 9: seventh year and we have a committee that works together.
3:23
Speaker 9: We talk about what ladies to honor and look at
3:27
Speaker 9: different areas that they serve in and we just work
3:31
Speaker 9: together getting sponsors, selling tickets and working with the ladies,
3:36
Speaker 9: which is really fun every year to get up to
3:38
Speaker 9: meet a new group of ladies who really serve in
3:40
Speaker 9: our valley.
3:41
Speaker 4: And you said it's April twenty ninth, Is that right?
3:43
Speaker 4: And where is it going to be.
3:44
Speaker 3: At Charleston marri Out at noon?
3:46
Speaker 4: Okay? All right? And tickets are.
3:47
Speaker 3: Still available, they are but very limited.
3:49
Speaker 7: Okay.
3:49
Speaker 4: What about sponsors at this point you.
3:50
Speaker 9: Mentioned we're full with sponsors. Thankfully, we have almost forty sponsors.
3:56
Speaker 9: Great group of sponsors to can I call out. A
3:58
Speaker 9: couple of Vandalia Health has been a sponsor for the
4:02
Speaker 9: last number of years. They're one of our premium sponsors,
4:06
Speaker 9: the Augusta Family Foundation and the sind Capital Management. Like
4:09
Speaker 9: I said, we've got almost forty sponsors. We're very thankful
4:12
Speaker 9: for them.
4:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, because you couldn't do it without the sponsors. Right now,
4:15
Speaker 4: are you at liberty to tell us who's going to
4:17
Speaker 4: be honored?
4:17
Speaker 9: I am, and it's a great group of ladies. Aaron
4:21
Speaker 9: Flanagan is the executive director of Hope for Appalachia. She's
4:26
Speaker 9: a really sweet young woman with four kids, but works really,
4:29
Speaker 9: really hard. She developed the Hope Closet program, which has
4:34
Speaker 9: pantries in our schools. Michelle Robinson she is a West
4:39
Speaker 9: Virginia school speech language pathologist, but she's a co founder
4:45
Speaker 9: of Exceptional Possibilities of West Virginia, which works with children
4:49
Speaker 9: with disabilities and autism. Michelle Thompson is executive director of
4:54
Speaker 9: Counseling and Compassion Ministries at Bible Center Church. Kate White
4:59
Speaker 9: is executive director of Legal Aid and serves in many
5:02
Speaker 9: different ways in our community. And Debbie Wright is from
5:06
Speaker 9: the Upper Canal Valley and she's the manager of the
5:09
Speaker 9: food pantry at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and does
5:13
Speaker 9: a whole lot for different organizations in the Upper Canal Valley.
5:16
Speaker 4: Now, how are these ladies chosen for this?
5:19
Speaker 9: We have a committee that throws out names. We ask
5:22
Speaker 9: for names at the luncheon. We really appreciate anyone who
5:25
Speaker 9: has ideas for ladies can contact me. We'd like to
5:29
Speaker 9: pick ladies who aren't recognized a lot, who are really
5:33
Speaker 9: surprised when we come to them and tell them they're
5:35
Speaker 9: going to be a woman on a mission.
5:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean talk about some of those stories in
5:39
Speaker 4: the past. How many years have you been doing this?
5:41
Speaker 3: Seven?
5:41
Speaker 4: Okay, seven years? I know we've talked about on the
5:43
Speaker 4: show the last couple of years. When you go to
5:45
Speaker 4: those ladies and say, you know, congratulations, you're going to
5:47
Speaker 4: be honored at this luncheon, what's the response you normally again, oh.
5:50
Speaker 3: A lot of times tears.
5:52
Speaker 9: They're just so thrilled because they never expect to be honored.
5:55
Speaker 9: We take them flowers and surprise. Then we work with
5:58
Speaker 9: a family member or a colleague to set up a surprise,
6:01
Speaker 9: to take them the flowers and surprise them. So, yeah,
6:05
Speaker 9: they are so grateful, very humble ladies.
6:08
Speaker 8: That's one of my favorite parts of this is showing up.
6:11
Speaker 8: They're not expecting us. We show up and you really
6:14
Speaker 8: get to see the side of these ladies. They're not
6:16
Speaker 8: doing this for recognition, but when someone takes time out
6:19
Speaker 8: to actually, you know, look in, see what they're doing,
6:23
Speaker 8: recognize what they're doing. Man, it's amazing. It really is
6:26
Speaker 8: pretty cool.
6:27
Speaker 4: Talking again with Lisa Pack and Jason Quintrell and this
6:30
Speaker 4: Women on a Mission lunch and coming up April the
6:32
Speaker 4: twenty ninth, it is nine to fourteen of Dave Islands
6:35
Speaker 4: Show on five etyline, brought to you imparted by the
6:36
Speaker 4: all new generations for it of Hurricane Visit Generations Forward
6:40
Speaker 4: dot Com. And so what's the program like of the
6:43
Speaker 4: twenty ninth here at the Marriotten It's.
6:44
Speaker 8: Only going to last about an hour and a half.
6:46
Speaker 8: We want to be very conscious of people's tounch time
6:49
Speaker 8: and their lunch during their work so they'll have plenty
6:52
Speaker 8: of time to be able to get back to work.
6:54
Speaker 8: But Lisa, you've worked really hard on this program and
6:57
Speaker 8: the committee, and you.
7:00
Speaker 9: Tell a little bit about what makes up a woman
7:02
Speaker 9: on a Mission, what the attribute your characteristics of a
7:05
Speaker 9: woman kindness, serving others, being community minded. Then we honor
7:11
Speaker 9: each lady, give them a time to give us a
7:14
Speaker 9: little talk about what they do and just what drives
7:16
Speaker 9: them to serve others, and then we do talk a
7:18
Speaker 9: little bit about the Union mission. It is.
7:21
Speaker 3: We are trying to strike a really good.
7:23
Speaker 9: Balance of honoring these ladies, but we want people to
7:25
Speaker 9: know about the Union mission too.
7:27
Speaker 4: And what do you want people to know about Union mission?
7:29
Speaker 8: Either one to you Jason, So well, this year we're
7:31
Speaker 8: going to talk about what we're doing in the schools
7:33
Speaker 8: and feeding kids. Got some kids that all over the
7:36
Speaker 8: county and all over surrounding counties that are struggling. I
7:41
Speaker 8: mean it's hard for them to learn when they're basic
7:43
Speaker 8: needs of hunger is not being met. And so we
7:46
Speaker 8: are working really hard to get involved in schools and
7:49
Speaker 8: provide pantries and such in those schools so these kids
7:51
Speaker 8: can have something to eat outside of school.
7:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I mean we're in April now, April the twentieth,
7:57
Speaker 4: and so school is going to be out a little
7:58
Speaker 4: over a month or so month of a couple of
8:00
Speaker 4: weeks or so from now. So sadly, and you and
8:02
Speaker 4: I have talked about this in the past, Jason, some
8:04
Speaker 4: of these kids, this is where they get fed, and
8:06
Speaker 4: this may be the only time that they get fed.
8:08
Speaker 4: And I know there are a lot of different organizations
8:10
Speaker 4: that go above and beyond. We walk a lot with
8:12
Speaker 4: backpack Buddies and things like that. We do an event here,
8:16
Speaker 4: drop your snacks events, try to get some things collected
8:18
Speaker 4: for the kids, but still there's never enough.
8:20
Speaker 8: I used to I couldn't wait for summer break when
8:22
Speaker 8: I was a kid, and it was like it was playtime.
8:25
Speaker 8: But a lot of these kids now in twenty twenty six,
8:28
Speaker 8: they they're not as they're not looking forward to it
8:31
Speaker 8: as much as we did, because they're wondering where their
8:33
Speaker 8: next meal is going to come from.
8:35
Speaker 4: Exactly right again, we're talking Lisa Pack and Jason Quin
8:37
Speaker 4: Travis Lunch is going to be April to twenty nine.
8:39
Speaker 4: Who are some people that have been honored in the past,
8:41
Speaker 4: I mean, just over the years, just a couple of
8:42
Speaker 4: names here and there.
8:43
Speaker 9: We've honored. Last year, we honored Gene Simpson. We've honored
8:51
Speaker 9: in the past, Marjorie Cook and Gi Settle. I'm sure
8:55
Speaker 9: you're familiar with Sandy Campbell, and we actually honored Joanna
8:58
Speaker 9: Tabot a long time ago, and where our first honorees
9:02
Speaker 9: was doctor Michelle Foster Selena Midkiffe. I'm sure all these
9:06
Speaker 9: are all names that you're very familiar to.
9:08
Speaker 8: Pack was one of those at one time.
9:11
Speaker 4: Whatever happened to her after she got that award. But lovely,
9:14
Speaker 4: you guys are to be committed, you know, for this,
9:18
Speaker 4: for what you're doing to honor these folks. And again,
9:20
Speaker 4: I don't know everybody that's on the list. I know
9:23
Speaker 4: a few, and based on what I know, and I'm
9:26
Speaker 4: sure they're all this way. They don't. This is not
9:28
Speaker 4: why they do it for the accolades whatever. They just
9:30
Speaker 4: want to do great things in the community, and that's
9:32
Speaker 4: that's why they do it. But it is nice to
9:33
Speaker 4: be honored. Yeah, absolutely, all right. The luncheon again is
9:36
Speaker 4: April twenty ninth at the Marriot starts Aton at noon,
9:40
Speaker 4: and you said it'd be over by one something like
9:43
Speaker 4: I get everybody back to work and so on and
9:44
Speaker 4: so forth. Give us the information on tickets where they
9:47
Speaker 4: can get because you said tickets are kind of scarce
9:49
Speaker 4: right now. Sorry, you probably ought to get them over
9:50
Speaker 4: the next day or so.
9:51

Speaker 4: on yourself.
13:51
Speaker 14: Well, I was born and raised in Canaha City. I
13:53
Speaker 14: graduated from WVU. My parents, gosh, they've lived, they've lived
13:59
Speaker 14: here for over fifty years. We still have my childhood home.
14:03
Speaker 14: I am the vice president of community Engagement for Family
14:07
Speaker 14: Care Health Centers. I'm the executive director of their foundation.
14:10
Speaker 11: Again. This is my second term on city council.
14:12
Speaker 14: I still have an active real estate license and I
14:15
Speaker 14: love revitalization and redevelopment of properties.
14:17
Speaker 4: So why did you run for city council? To begin with, Well,
14:20
Speaker 4: there was.
14:21
Speaker 14: A gentleman that has become a very good friend of mine,
14:23
Speaker 14: Andy Richardson. He was running for mayor against Mayor good
14:26
Speaker 14: One the first term, and he wanted to sit down
14:29
Speaker 14: with a group of business owners and a very good
14:31
Speaker 14: friend of mine and a good friend of you where
14:32
Speaker 14: it's Tony Pearns, you know, said Jen, and can you
14:34
Speaker 14: come by tomorrow morning?
14:36
Speaker 4: Did you really need to bring that guy up? That's
14:38
Speaker 4: such a good morning?
14:39
Speaker 14: I know, he's great. He said can you come by
14:42
Speaker 14: tomorrow morning? And it was like nine o'clock at night,
14:44
Speaker 14: and I'm like, Tony, what time?
14:45
Speaker 11: He said? Eight am?
14:47
Speaker 14: I said, sure, I'll come by, and so we just
14:48
Speaker 14: started talking about some ideas that I had for redevelopment
14:52
Speaker 14: in downtown Charleston, and Andy came up to me afterwards
14:55
Speaker 14: and he said, he's like, your ideas are infectious. He
14:58
Speaker 14: was like, you should run for a city council and
14:59
Speaker 14: he he stuck with me for fourteen weeks before I
15:02
Speaker 14: decided to say us. And I'm glad that he saw
15:04
Speaker 14: something in me that I didn't see in myself.
15:06
Speaker 4: What were some of the ideas that you presented at
15:09
Speaker 4: that meeting?
15:10
Speaker 14: Well, I talked about downtown living, and I talked about
15:13
Speaker 14: multi use properties, and that's one of the reasons I
15:16
Speaker 14: stayed in Charleston, to be honest with you, I was
15:19
Speaker 14: talking with a gentleman that has my real estate license now,
15:23
Speaker 14: Martin Riggs, and we were talking about some of the
15:25
Speaker 14: properties that he had and we walked through some of them,
15:28
Speaker 14: and I really just thought that it was something that
15:30
Speaker 14: he could do. He had some renderings up that were
15:32
Speaker 14: for the Union Building and I'm very thankful that we're
15:37
Speaker 14: discussing the Capital Connector campaign that will transform the Canal Boulevard,
15:41
Speaker 14: which will help the Union Building as well. And he
15:44
Speaker 14: hired me that day on the spot and we just
15:47
Speaker 14: talked about things that I thought that we could do,
15:49
Speaker 14: incorporating artwalk to show off the renderings that we have,
15:52
Speaker 14: and how we were going to transform the properties.
15:54
Speaker 11: There were so many people that were.
15:55
Speaker 14: Saying that it wouldn't work, and quite frankly, the Atlas
15:59
Speaker 14: building has been one hundred percent full for five years.
16:02
Speaker 14: So when people move out, we have a wait list
16:04
Speaker 14: and people will rent Sight Unseen and it's really started
16:07
Speaker 14: to transform that part of Corrier and Leon Sullivan and
16:12
Speaker 14: Dunbar Street. So it's amazing to see the number of
16:14
Speaker 14: people that will move here from out of state and
16:17
Speaker 14: they fall in love with the people. They really fall
16:20
Speaker 14: in love with this area and they stay.
16:22
Speaker 4: It's very interesting that you mentioned that, because you know,
16:25
Speaker 4: things go in cycles and for years, and it doesn't
16:28
Speaker 4: matter whether they're talking about Charleston or any o their location.
16:30
Speaker 4: This was the hot area. Everybody wants to be here.
16:32
Speaker 4: Everybody wants to be in South Hills, or everybody wants
16:34
Speaker 4: to be Knas City or you know, wherever. But it
16:37
Speaker 4: all kind of comes back around and with younger people,
16:40
Speaker 4: we are finding that they they really like living downtown.
16:44
Speaker 4: That's one of the things that appeals to them is
16:46
Speaker 4: that downtown living to be able to walk to shops
16:50
Speaker 4: and restaurants and so on and so forth, and that
16:52
Speaker 4: seems to be very big among younger people, which is
16:54
Speaker 4: the kind of people that you want to attract to Charleston.
16:57
Speaker 14: Oh, for sure. And honestly, Dave, it's the gamut. You
17:00
Speaker 14: can have folks that are here for some of UC's programs,
17:04
Speaker 14: or we have some folks that there are medical residents
17:06
Speaker 14: and they've been here two or three years. And we
17:07
Speaker 14: also have some folks that they no longer want to
17:10
Speaker 14: cut grass and they're empty nesters and they want to
17:13
Speaker 14: stay downtown.
17:14
Speaker 4: Now focused on the young people, but it's but there
17:16
Speaker 4: are a lot of older people that do.
17:17
Speaker 14: That too, absolutely, and it's the gamut. And quite frankly,
17:21
Speaker 14: and I tell people this and I will show them
17:22
Speaker 14: my phone. I probably receive on average, I probably receive
17:27
Speaker 14: thirty contacts a week for people that want to move here,
17:31
Speaker 14: people that want to live downtown. And then it's to
17:34
Speaker 14: the point where I can go through a wait list
17:35
Speaker 14: and someone can be on a wait list for eight
17:37
Speaker 14: months and they're like, Yeah, I haven't moved yet, I've
17:38
Speaker 14: been waiting for you to call me.
17:40
Speaker 11: They move in.
17:41
Speaker 4: Talking to Jennifer Farr, who is on the Charleston City
17:44
Speaker 4: Council in the at large seed nine to twenty five,
17:46
Speaker 4: a Dave Island Show on five Any Line brought to
17:48
Speaker 4: you and fired by Pinnacle Consultants hell Wey to identify
17:50
Speaker 4: environmental concerns including asbestos, led mold, and indoor quality issues
17:54
Speaker 4: and buildings all across the great state of West Virginia,
17:56
Speaker 4: providing inspections, testing out of credit to lab services. You
17:59
Speaker 4: could try check out Pinnacle Corp did net helping you
18:01
Speaker 4: understand your environment because what you don't know can't hurt you.
18:05
Speaker 4: You're you said in that in one of the at
18:07
Speaker 4: large seats on Charleston City Council, and you know, every
18:11
Speaker 4: member of city Council serves the entire city. I mean
18:14
Speaker 4: they're they're focused on of course their ward, their district understandable,
18:18
Speaker 4: but at large is the whole city. But everybody's really,
18:21
Speaker 4: you know, trying to serve the whole city. Talk about
18:23
Speaker 4: serving in an at large role and how maybe it
18:25
Speaker 4: would differ if as opposed to being in an actual
18:29
Speaker 4: numbered ward.
18:30
Speaker 14: Well, one of the things that's very different is that,
18:33
Speaker 14: like you said, we serve the entire city. So our
18:36
Speaker 14: election is based on the entire city that votes for
18:39
Speaker 14: US ward representatives. Only people that live in their ward
18:42
Speaker 14: can vote for the ward reps, but that they can
18:44
Speaker 14: also vote for at large representatives. So many times what
18:47
Speaker 14: will happen is folks will stop me and say, you know,
18:50
Speaker 14: I have a great relationship with my ward Rep. But
18:53
Speaker 14: I know that you're focused on community development and I
18:56
Speaker 14: want to talk to you about community development. And absolutely
19:00
Speaker 14: they can talk to me about that as well. I
19:02
Speaker 14: think many times people think that we have all the answers,
19:06
Speaker 14: and to be honest with you, there are times that
19:08
Speaker 14: I lean on other folks, like Councilwoman Becky Separately. If
19:12
Speaker 14: there is someone that has served their entire life, it
19:14
Speaker 14: is Becky Separately, and she has so much wisdom and
19:17
Speaker 14: knowledge that I could call her and say, Becky, I'm
19:19
Speaker 14: unclear about this. Can you help me point me in
19:22
Speaker 14: the right direction.
19:23
Speaker 11: And that's what we do.
19:24
Speaker 14: We're just like this huge team that we work together
19:27
Speaker 14: and we try to just overcome some of the problems
19:29
Speaker 14: that we have. One example that I can give to
19:31
Speaker 14: you is during the ice storm, I recently moved and
19:35
Speaker 14: there was a group text that went out and a
19:38
Speaker 14: tree was blocking the road so you couldn't get up,
19:40
Speaker 14: you couldn't get in or out. Instead of me just
19:43
Speaker 14: calling the ward Rep, I just went ahead and reached
19:45
Speaker 14: out to who I knew to reach out to, and
19:47
Speaker 14: that tree was It was removed within an hour and
19:50
Speaker 14: the city, honestly, working with the city and the city workers,
19:53
Speaker 14: they deserve all the praise because to be able to
19:55
Speaker 14: do that and for folks to come out and to
19:57
Speaker 14: remedy the problem, that's what we're looking to overcome.
20:00
Speaker 4: What are you most proud of on your time on
20:03
Speaker 4: Charleston City Council? You know that it's been necessarily be
20:06
Speaker 4: something that you did, but something that you worked on
20:07
Speaker 4: or whatever.
20:08
Speaker 11: That you one of the things.
20:10
Speaker 14: And again with my background with community development and also
20:14
Speaker 14: with nonprofits and fundraising, I'm so proud of Slight Plaza.
20:19
Speaker 14: You know that property has been transformed. Dave, I don't
20:22
Speaker 14: know if you can remember being younger, that was the
20:24
Speaker 14: street I couldn't go on. My mother told me, you
20:27
Speaker 14: can go anywhere downtown, but you can't go on Summer Street.
20:30
Speaker 14: And that property has transformed into a place that people
20:35
Speaker 14: think of it as like a Hallmark movie scene at
20:38
Speaker 14: Christmas and Holly Jolly Brawley was an idea that Morgan
20:43
Speaker 14: Morrison and Kevin Madison came to me and said, hey,
20:46
Speaker 14: we've got an idea. It looks like I always forget
20:49
Speaker 14: the name of the alley and the Harry Potter movie.
20:52
Speaker 14: But they wanted to transform it and we sat down
20:55
Speaker 14: and talked to the mayor and wanted fifty Christmas trees.
20:58
Speaker 14: And I can't take credit for that. That was Morgan
21:00
Speaker 14: and Kevin, but they asked me if I would help,
21:02
Speaker 14: and I did so. I'm very excited as to what
21:05
Speaker 14: Slock Plaza has become. And I think you may know this.
21:10
Speaker 14: I have a few Airbnbs and many of the people
21:13
Speaker 14: that stay with us, they talk about how beautiful and
21:15
Speaker 14: walkable the city is downtown and they come in to
21:19
Speaker 14: take photographs during Holly Jolly Browley at Slock Plaza.
21:22
Speaker 4: It's amazing how that grew, you know. I remember when
21:25
Speaker 4: the idea was first proposed, there was a couple of
21:27
Speaker 4: trees here and there. So now I mean, it's it's
21:30
Speaker 4: like a not to not to be corny, but it's
21:32
Speaker 4: like a winter wonderland.
21:33
Speaker 10: You know.
21:33
Speaker 11: Is it started with the idea of fifty trees.
21:35
Speaker 14: Yeah, And to be honest with you, it was buy
21:38
Speaker 14: it from the capital market because they bring the Christmas
21:40
Speaker 14: trees in, supporting local businesses and I'm very proud of
21:45
Speaker 14: the work that I have done with helping local small businesses,
21:49
Speaker 14: putting people together with resources. Again, I mentioned Becky Supperlely.
21:53
Speaker 14: She had an idea to make sure that there was
21:55
Speaker 14: grant funding available for women and minority owned businesses, and
21:58
Speaker 14: she asked if I would help with that. Absolutely I did,
22:01
Speaker 14: and we see the fruits of that and the return
22:04
Speaker 14: of that. So just the way the growth and development
22:07
Speaker 14: of the city, how it has taken place, we still
22:10
Speaker 14: have work to do and that's why I hope to
22:11
Speaker 14: be a part of it.
22:13
Speaker 4: Talk about the business development in downtown Charleston. I mean
22:15
Speaker 4: we've seen businesses over the last couple In the last
22:18
Speaker 4: couple of weeks, there's been a couple of new businesses
22:20
Speaker 4: that have opened. I'm talking about in specifically downtown Charleston.
22:24
Speaker 4: Talk about that development.
22:26
Speaker 14: Yeah, it's I can remember when I got here several
22:29
Speaker 14: years ago and walking downtown and there were there were.
22:31
Speaker 11: Lots of empty storefronts.
22:34
Speaker 14: That was one of the first things that I was
22:36
Speaker 14: tasked with when I started working with Martin. I think
22:39
Speaker 14: he had eight empty storefronts and within eighteen months he
22:44
Speaker 14: had seven of them leased. And that's just simply going
22:46
Speaker 14: to business development meetings. It's going to the Charleston Area Alliance,
22:51
Speaker 14: implementing the business liaison that the city has, going out
22:54
Speaker 14: to businesses and saying, what is it that you need.
22:56
Speaker 14: Some business owners they're very good at their craft, but
22:59
Speaker 14: they may not be good bookkeeping, they may not be
23:01
Speaker 14: good at marketing. So when you can bring resources to
23:04
Speaker 14: the businesses and the people and take away some of
23:07
Speaker 14: their inks, then it helps them to grow and develop.
23:10
Speaker 14: If you walk downtown now and you look at the storefronts,
23:13
Speaker 14: there's not too many empty storefronts. Several years ago that
23:17
Speaker 14: may not have been the case. And again I think
23:19
Speaker 14: that comes from what I call the little puzzle pieces.
23:22
Speaker 14: When you have downtown living, people are proud of where
23:24
Speaker 14: they live. They take care of where they live. They
23:27
Speaker 14: want to be able to access restaurants, They want to
23:30
Speaker 14: be able to go to different places like Slock Plaza
23:32
Speaker 14: or the Regatta. They want to be able to take
23:34
Speaker 14: their to tell their families to come here and show
23:36
Speaker 14: it off. I think the ASSINN program is going to
23:39
Speaker 14: be very good for Charleston and bringing in the young
23:41
Speaker 14: professionals that work remote. We see that happen quite a
23:45
Speaker 14: bit and Once people are here, they love the friendliness
23:48
Speaker 14: and they love the outdoors that they can take part in.
23:51
Speaker 14: You know, can get to the New River Gorge in
23:53
Speaker 14: less than an hour, but if you stay here in Charleston,
23:54
Speaker 14: it's cheaper. That helps to boost our economy as well.
23:57
Speaker 14: So I think again, if you walk downtown, you'll see
23:59
Speaker 14: there's not too many empty storefronts.
24:00
Speaker 4: What kind of challenges, Jennifer, do you see for the
24:03
Speaker 4: city moving forward?
24:05
Speaker 14: You know, we still have the issue with homelessness, and
24:10
Speaker 14: I think I've shared this with you, Dave. My brother
24:13
Speaker 14: died of an overdose a few years ago on New
24:16
Speaker 14: Year's Eve, and he died from a methamphetamine overdose. One
24:21
Speaker 14: of the hardest things that my mother had to contend
24:23
Speaker 14: with god rehearsal was this was her son that was
24:27
Speaker 14: an active addiction, and no one could help him because
24:29
Speaker 14: he had to want he had to have the willingness
24:31
Speaker 14: to help himself. But one of the things that I
24:33
Speaker 14: told her was, Mom, he's ruining the house that you
24:36
Speaker 14: and Dad worked so hard to maintain and to keep
24:39
Speaker 14: in our family. And I believe bringing resources to families
24:44
Speaker 14: that need it when they're dealing with situations like that.
24:46
Speaker 14: I know what that's like, and I see that very
24:49
Speaker 14: prevalently in Kanas City, that's where I grew up. I
24:52
Speaker 14: have two properties there, and I think there's resources that
24:56
Speaker 14: are available for those that are fighting active addiction, but
24:59
Speaker 14: there's not very many resources for families. And that's one
25:02
Speaker 14: of the things that I've focused on quite heavily in
25:04
Speaker 14: the grants that I've written recently and had been received.
25:08
Speaker 14: We have to be able to pour into those that
25:11
Speaker 14: are helping the folks that we have that are in
25:13
Speaker 14: active addiction, because they need resources just as well as
25:15
Speaker 14: those that are suffering.
25:17
Speaker 4: Where are you on the proposed sports center? And of course,
25:20
Speaker 4: to everybody on the show, every now and then, every
25:23
Speaker 4: couple of days, I get a text about the town
25:25
Speaker 4: center and do you have any opinions on either one
25:28
Speaker 4: of those?
25:28
Speaker 11: I do.
25:30
Speaker 14: One of the things that you asked me what I'm
25:31
Speaker 14: most proud of. I was able to bring the first
25:35
Speaker 14: Big Shots multi court basketball tournament here and it's something
25:38
Speaker 14: that former councilmen Sam Minardi and Tim Brady, that is
25:42
Speaker 14: the CEO and president of the CVB. We actually went
25:46
Speaker 14: to Principal o'liary at Charleston Catholic. My son was heavily
25:50
Speaker 14: involved in sports. He and his buddy Aiden Saderfield, they
25:53
Speaker 14: both receive collegiate scholarships and I'm proud to say they're
25:56
Speaker 14: both college graduates now. I drove them all over the
26:00
Speaker 14: southeastern part of this country to let them play in
26:02
Speaker 14: basketball tournaments, and I saw the amount of money I
26:05
Speaker 14: was spending on them. So we worked really hard to say,
26:09
Speaker 14: how can we have a catalyst to come to the
26:12
Speaker 14: city to show the amount of money that can come
26:14
Speaker 14: from sports tourism. So the Snyders came down. They played
26:18
Speaker 14: at Charleston Catholics facility. We were able to show them
26:21
Speaker 14: the Convention Center, the Civic Center, how we were going
26:23
Speaker 14: to be able to bring the courts in and they
26:24
Speaker 14: signed the first multi court, multi year basketball tournament for
26:28
Speaker 14: multi courts, And I think the Capital Sports Complex is
26:31
Speaker 14: going to be a huge economic driver of development in
26:35
Speaker 14: the city. If you've not ever traveled with kids that
26:39
Speaker 14: play in youth sports, save your money because it's very expensive.
26:46
Speaker 14: But at the same point in time, you see the
26:48
Speaker 14: hotels that are full, you see the restaurants that are full.
26:51
Speaker 14: Then you see the things that kids want to do.
26:53
Speaker 14: Whether that's going to be oh gosh, I can't tell
26:56
Speaker 14: you how many put puts we went to, or how
26:58
Speaker 14: many other dave and bus or different things that we
27:01
Speaker 14: went to. And you will see those things that come
27:03
Speaker 14: about and they'll stay busy as well.
27:06
Speaker 4: Talking to Jennifer Farr, who again is an at large
27:08
Speaker 4: member of a city council, would be a real lanct nextion, Well,
27:10
Speaker 4: we had a texture. Somebody was asking about affordable living
27:14
Speaker 4: for downtown because I think they were kind of alluding
27:16
Speaker 4: to the fact maybe some of the places that you
27:17
Speaker 4: mentioned word a little bit a little bit pricey, But
27:20
Speaker 4: what about affordable living down.
27:22
Speaker 14: There is some affordable living downtown as well. Right now,
27:25
Speaker 14: I can't think of the building, I can see it
27:26
Speaker 14: in my mind, but there are some affordable options. But
27:29
Speaker 14: the one thing that I want to make sure that
27:32
Speaker 14: I bring to light when the large buildings are renovated,
27:35
Speaker 14: it is layers of different things like the historic tax
27:40
Speaker 14: credits are a huge factor when you're renovating a large
27:43
Speaker 14: building and turning it into a multi use building. The
27:47
Speaker 14: owners of the property and the investors of the property,
27:49
Speaker 14: they have to be able to recoup their investment. So
27:52
Speaker 14: many times the rents are set at a certain level
27:55
Speaker 14: so that the properties can be renovated. So that's just
27:58
Speaker 14: one of the that's just one of the facts of
28:00
Speaker 14: with the renovation of the properties.
28:02
Speaker 4: How's a campaign, Ben, As you've been out campaigning, going
28:05
Speaker 4: to different events and so on and so forth, what
28:07
Speaker 4: are you hearing from the people.
28:09
Speaker 14: I think people are They're excited about the development downtown.
28:14
Speaker 14: I think people want to see that same development replicated
28:17
Speaker 14: on the west side. I think with the Charleston Land
28:20
Speaker 14: Reuse Group that meets, they're putting parcels of lands together
28:24
Speaker 14: and that's exactly what they're doing. People are concerned about
28:28
Speaker 14: what we've talked about with city Council. I'm sorry with
28:30
Speaker 14: Canal City earlier with the homelessness and then the vacant properties.
28:36
Speaker 14: I believe people just want their neighborhoods to be safe.
28:38
Speaker 14: They want it to be in an attractive area, and
28:43
Speaker 14: many people that I talk to they just love Charleston.
28:45
Speaker 4: Where can people learn more about your campaign? Website, social media,
28:49
Speaker 4: social media.
28:50
Speaker 14: Have a Facebook page. It's Councilwoman Jennifer Farr at Large.
28:55
Speaker 14: One of the things, Dave, when I walk down the
28:57
Speaker 14: streets and I talk to people, I welcome them to
29:00
Speaker 14: stop me and talk to me.
29:00
Speaker 11: I want to hear what they have to say.
29:02
Speaker 14: I've gone to the candidate forums, I've reached out to
29:06
Speaker 14: people on phone, text, knocked on their doors. But if
29:10
Speaker 14: they want to learn more about me, just please follow
29:12
Speaker 14: me on Facebook at Councilwoman Jennifer farr at.
29:15
Speaker 4: Large Final thirty Watch did someone vote to re elect
29:17
Speaker 4: Jennifer Farda to city Council?
29:19
Speaker 14: You know what, David, I think I speak up for
29:21
Speaker 14: people and have the uncomfortable but necessary conversations. I'm available,
29:26
Speaker 14: I'm approachable, and I think one thing that folks need
29:29
Speaker 14: to be monmful of in this election, we're losing Councilwoman
29:34
Speaker 14: Becky separately, and we're losing Councilwoman Marybeth Hoover.
29:37
Speaker 11: They're not running for reelection.
29:39
Speaker 14: They have the experience and they've been the go tos
29:43
Speaker 14: for me when I've had questions. We're going to lose
29:46
Speaker 14: that experience except for those of us that have been
29:49

Speaker 4: hold on, let me change this. Okay, all right, live radio.
34:14
Speaker 7: How about now there you go.
34:15
Speaker 4: Sounds a whole lot better right now. So okay, all right.
34:19
Speaker 4: I wanted to ask you, Danny, about David McKinley. We
34:22
Speaker 4: got word of his passing on Friday. Your thoughts on
34:24
Speaker 4: David McKinley.
34:26
Speaker 7: He was We had twenty members of the House and
34:33
Speaker 7: our leader was a guy, a really superstar named Bob Burke.
34:38
Speaker 7: Sitting next to him with Vernon Chris, who's up there now,
34:43
Speaker 7: and next to him with David McKinley. And next to
34:46
Speaker 7: David was me and David. We had, even in that
34:53
Speaker 7: little twenty group, we had factions. And we had the
34:58
Speaker 7: i'll call him the more pragmatic factions, and then we
35:03
Speaker 7: had the more conservative factions. David and John Overington they
35:10
Speaker 7: were in the more conservative faction. Now, when David became
35:15
Speaker 7: a congressman, that changed. He became more pragmatic. He voted
35:21
Speaker 7: for that infrastructure bill which enabled us to have Wi
35:26
Speaker 7: Fi and and a lot of great things to happen
35:30
Speaker 7: in West Virginia, and that cost him the election. But
35:34
Speaker 7: I thought he was a great congressman. He was a
35:36
Speaker 7: great guy. He was hard at hear him, and but
35:44
Speaker 7: I really liked him, and he was a very serious man.
35:49
Speaker 7: And I'm I'm rip.
35:52
Speaker 4: Yeah. I got a chance to meet him when he
35:54
Speaker 4: ran for I'm sure you remember when he ran for governor.
35:56
Speaker 4: Uh and uh and he came to Logan on a
35:59
Speaker 4: campaign stop when he was running for governor. I got
36:02
Speaker 4: a chance to meet him and interview him then, and
36:04
Speaker 4: he just genuinely was a I mean, in my opinion,
36:05
Speaker 4: I didn't know him as well as you did. But
36:07
Speaker 4: my couple of encounters I had with him, Danny, he
36:09
Speaker 4: was genuinely just seemed like a good guy.
36:12
Speaker 7: He was, but I think he got a little mad
36:15
Speaker 7: at me because I was for Cecial when't that happened.
36:19
Speaker 7: But I like David. I've got his picture up here
36:24
Speaker 7: on the wall. You know. His picture was up there
36:27
Speaker 7: on the wall in my restaurant. Now I'm the wall
36:31
Speaker 7: on my condo. So he's a great guy.
36:35
Speaker 4: You weren't on with us last week. So where do
36:39
Speaker 4: we start with President Trump? In the last week and
36:42
Speaker 4: a half from the from the meme that he did
36:46
Speaker 4: not create, that he shared on truth social that angered
36:49
Speaker 4: a lot of people. And that and now he's at
36:51
Speaker 4: war with the Pope. Where are you on the latest stuff? Uh?
36:54
Speaker 4: With the with President Trump?
36:58
Speaker 7: You know, it's hard when people say unkind things about
37:04
Speaker 7: you cannot respond. But I had to learn to try
37:10
Speaker 7: to do it. And President Trump really needs to do
37:15
Speaker 7: it now this thing with him addressing up like Jesus,
37:20
Speaker 7: are you saying he didn't do that?
37:22
Speaker 4: No, he didn't create the meme or he did not
37:26
Speaker 4: create it. He shared it. Someone else created it. He
37:29
Speaker 4: just shared it on his truth social. And first they
37:31
Speaker 4: came out and they said, well, obviously he didn't do it. Well,
37:34
Speaker 4: he didn't do it, but he did share it. And
37:37
Speaker 4: then he I guess he misunderstood from what I understand,
37:40
Speaker 4: Carolyn Levitt said to say that it was a doctored photo.
37:45
Speaker 4: He went out to the press Monday or Tuesday last
37:47
Speaker 4: week and said, I saw myself as a doctor in
37:51
Speaker 4: the photo and it angered a lot of people.
37:54
Speaker 7: And nothing he does angered me. He's now getting free
38:01
Speaker 7: rent inside of my head. But I I just I
38:11
Speaker 7: just were he wouldn't do stuff like that, so go
38:15
Speaker 7: ahead the bigger picture as I see it, if I
38:19
Speaker 7: could tell President Trump one thing, or tell all of us,
38:23
Speaker 7: including me, don't raise expectations, because that's what he did
38:30
Speaker 7: with that canal what's the name of that.
38:33
Speaker 4: Are most of the trade from armies?
38:35
Speaker 7: Yeah, and uh he said, oh it's free. He can
38:38
Speaker 7: get through it. Now, No, you can't. And he really,
38:45
Speaker 7: he really needs to tamp it down. That's see. That's
38:50
Speaker 7: what And the Democrats, you know, see, I think I
38:57
Speaker 7: think the Democrats are gonna help. They're gonna wipe out
39:00
Speaker 7: that House in the next election. I mean, they're going
39:04
Speaker 7: to pick up fifty SE's for your fifty ce's. I'm
39:08
Speaker 7: not sure about the Senate, but they still they hate
39:13
Speaker 7: him so much they can't shut up and just let
39:17
Speaker 7: it happen. You know, they can't observe the Napoleon axiom
39:24
Speaker 7: never destroy your opponent when they're destroying themselves. Yeah, and
39:30
Speaker 7: I wish President Trump wouldn't do that. I don't dislike him.
39:33
Speaker 7: I didn't vote for him. I didn't vote for her either,
39:36
Speaker 7: But I just wish he would make friends.
39:45
Speaker 4: What do you think of his little spats if you
39:48
Speaker 4: will with the Pope?
39:53
Speaker 7: Well, like you don't have to respond to everything. And
39:59
Speaker 7: but see he can help himself. And you know, I
40:06
Speaker 7: look back at all of our presidents, clear back to Nixon.
40:10
Speaker 7: He would none of them would have would have responded
40:14
Speaker 7: to that, or have they done it in such a way.
40:18
Speaker 7: I respect the Pope and the Catholic Church. We just
40:22
Speaker 7: have a fundamental disagreement about what's going on. And our
40:26
Speaker 7: roles are different, and our roles are different. There's some
40:34
Speaker 7: good things that have happened to Iran, but he's in
40:44
Speaker 7: kind of a trap on this straight or four moves
40:47
Speaker 7: and if he doesn't, he then needs to put the
40:52
Speaker 7: hay down where the goats can get it or work
40:58
Speaker 7: out something. See. I don't David, I don't think nuclear
41:02
Speaker 7: weapons are the big problem in Iran. I think it's
41:06
Speaker 7: those missiles because all they have to do is turn
41:10
Speaker 7: one of them into an ICBM and they can take
41:14
Speaker 7: out the Empire State Building and half of New York.
41:18
Speaker 7: And so that's I'm no expert, obviously, but that's the
41:26
Speaker 7: way I see it.
41:28
Speaker 4: Talking again with Danny Jones, Are you in California right now? Danny?
41:32
Speaker 7: Yeah, Yeah, I bought a condo out here, and I'm
41:37
Speaker 7: you know, I spend time out here, and I spend
41:40
Speaker 7: more time back there, but I come out here.
41:43
Speaker 4: Well, obviously, you know, you being in California, in the
41:46
Speaker 4: area that you're in, in a Long Beach or whatever. What
41:49
Speaker 4: what's when you're out talking to people? You go out
41:52
Speaker 4: and you have coffee or whatever. I mean, the the
41:55
Speaker 4: conversations about President Trump, I, Ron, so on, and so
41:58
Speaker 4: forth are going to be a lot different in Charleston,
42:00
Speaker 4: West Virginia than what they are in Long Beach, California.
42:03
Speaker 4: What do you hear from people at the grocery store
42:04
Speaker 4: or the coffee shop or whatever in California about the President?
42:08
Speaker 7: We don't go there.
42:10
Speaker 4: Just don't just don't go there.
42:12
Speaker 7: Now Here here, at this community I live in, there
42:17
Speaker 7: are no Trump supporters. And I'm very careful about what
42:23
Speaker 7: I say. And I'm you know, I'm not either. I'm
42:27
Speaker 7: kind of a mainstream fella. But what you have to
42:31
Speaker 7: remember is there's a difference between Los Angeles County, which
42:38
Speaker 7: is where Long Beach is. Los Angeles County broke. Long
42:42
Speaker 7: Beach is broke, the city of Los Angeles has broke.
42:48
Speaker 7: Seal Beach where I live is it starts Orange County
42:55
Speaker 7: and Orange County is doing very well. And if you
43:01
Speaker 7: go about seven miles south on Pacific Coast Highway, you're
43:06
Speaker 7: in Huntington Beach, and Hunton Beach is pure maga.
43:11
Speaker 4: It's amazing how it does.
43:13
Speaker 7: No, it really is. It's mega. It's they have a
43:18
Speaker 7: big letters and from the library down there from my
43:23
Speaker 7: lie just stand and one of my best friends lives
43:26
Speaker 7: down there. Of course he's a big Democrat, but he says, man,
43:29
Speaker 7: these people are crazy.
43:32
Speaker 4: We're talking with Danny Jones. Danny, can you hang out
43:35

46:00
Speaker 4: coming up tomorrow. Danny Jones is with us. Danny I
46:04
Speaker 4: want to ask you, what what do you make?
46:05
Speaker 7: Let me let me tell you about this. We'll tell
46:08
Speaker 7: you about this community I'm living, all right, go ahead,
46:11
Speaker 7: There's ten thousand people live here, his Senior living community.
46:16
Speaker 7: I drove my Cadillac out here. I'm looking. I'm sitting
46:21
Speaker 7: at my office looking out the wind and there's my
46:23
Speaker 7: Cadillac sitting there, my fifty nine Cadillac. Now I can't
46:29
Speaker 7: get gas in it because they have these nozzles in
46:33
Speaker 7: California to keep the fumes from going out, and so
46:43
Speaker 7: I got to go by. I don't know how I'm
46:45
Speaker 7: gonna do this, but anyway I want to get that in.
46:49
Speaker 4: Is that the only vehicle you have out there is
46:51
Speaker 4: a Cabby?
46:52
Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't need another vehicle.
46:54
Speaker 4: Well, I understand, but if it doesn't have gas, I
46:57
Speaker 4: mean that's I'm no car expert, but that's somewhat problematic.
47:01
Speaker 7: Well, I put e eighty five in it, which is
47:06
Speaker 7: really not working. Well, so what I'm gonna do is
47:11
Speaker 7: go to home depot or one of these places and
47:15
Speaker 7: get a huge gas tank so I can put the
47:19
Speaker 7: gas in. I don't know, I don't know what to do,
47:21
Speaker 7: or I ask my friends, ask one of my friends.
47:25
Speaker 6: What to do?
47:26
Speaker 9: You know?
47:27
Speaker 4: I wanted to ask you, Danny, what do you make
47:28
Speaker 4: of Governor Morrissey getting so involved in the in the
47:32
Speaker 4: primary election. I mean, you know, you you're a Ronald
47:36
Speaker 4: Reagan guy. You know about Reagan's eleventh commandment, now shall
47:39
Speaker 4: not speak ill of the Republicans. Governor Morrissey has gone
47:43
Speaker 4: on record, he and the first Lady of endorsing other
47:45
Speaker 4: Republicans Republicans against Republicans in the May primary. What do
47:50
Speaker 4: you make of that?
47:51
Speaker 7: He can only create enemies for himself. He's not Look,
47:55
Speaker 7: he's not that strong. He's not that well wiped. Now
48:00
Speaker 7: when you talk about maybe he can bring some money
48:05
Speaker 7: in for him, you know, I mean, he can do that,
48:11
Speaker 7: but I think it's a big mistake. I wouldn't get involved.
48:15
Speaker 7: Art wouldn't. Art would privately.
48:20
Speaker 4: Well, and that's what I said. It's not like I mean,
48:22
Speaker 4: you know when you go out and you say, well,
48:24
Speaker 4: no other governor's I mean, they've all done it to
48:26
Speaker 4: a certain extent. But it's usually a phone call. You know,
48:29
Speaker 4: it's usually at a cocktail party, it's at the barber
48:32
Speaker 4: shop or something like that. It's a phone call. It's
48:34
Speaker 4: not as quote unquote on the records. And look, I
48:38
Speaker 4: mean it's his right to do that. That's what he
48:40
Speaker 4: wants to do. I don't know that I would do that,
48:42
Speaker 4: but I'm also not the governor. He's a lot smarter
48:44
Speaker 4: than I am.
48:46
Speaker 7: I wouldn't do it. There's a picture of myself Alma
48:51
Speaker 7: King's in the middle and John Racy's on the other side,
48:55
Speaker 7: and I have a beer bottle in my hand right
49:00
Speaker 7: of me. And the picture made the front page of
49:03
Speaker 7: John Racy's newspaper. And I got a call gooker more
49:10
Speaker 7: young man, you know, and he said, anytime you're drinking,
49:19
Speaker 7: put it.
49:19
Speaker 4: Around your back or hand it to somebody next to you.
49:23
Speaker 7: And I was still drinking at the time. One time
49:26
Speaker 7: when we were breaking them, you know, during the drug investigations,
49:30
Speaker 7: about nineteen eighty six, and we were cutting the ribbon
49:35
Speaker 7: on the Channel eight over there on feed My Road,
49:39
Speaker 7: and he was there and he pointed to me and
49:42
Speaker 7: he said, he said, there's a high sheriff. I said,
49:46
Speaker 7: you'd be careful with that high business. He laughed about
49:52
Speaker 7: that every time he talked to me. He laughed about that.
49:55
Speaker 4: Let me read a couple of texture for you. Danny
49:56
Speaker 4: once says, Dave, I'm glad to see the Republicans are
49:59
Speaker 4: going to read the Bible this week at the White House.
50:01
Speaker 4: They need to because they're godless. Apparently, Danny, President Trump
50:06
Speaker 4: is going to going to be reading passages from the
50:09
Speaker 4: Bible this week.
50:11
Speaker 7: Why the first thing he's gonna do that? Why do
50:14
Speaker 7: we have to know about it?
50:16
Speaker 4: Well, it's pr I mean, that's that's why do any
50:18
Speaker 4: political people do things so somebody will take a picture
50:21
Speaker 4: or video of it, you know that.
50:22
Speaker 7: You know, I want the church to somebody. I didn't
50:25
Speaker 7: I went to church this day. I didn't open up
50:28
Speaker 7: by saying I went to church, you know. I mean,
50:32
Speaker 7: if you don't have to advertise that, go ahead. Most
50:36
Speaker 7: of the other texts.
50:38
Speaker 4: Franklin Graham says President Trump's picture depicted him as a
50:41
Speaker 4: doctor was all it was, not a picture depicting him
50:45
Speaker 4: as the savior.
50:48
Speaker 7: Yeah. Well, Franklin Graham's in the tank, so I mean
50:54
Speaker 7: he's a good man. You know, he's some good things.
50:57
Speaker 7: I love this dad, but he's in the tank for
51:01
Speaker 7: Trump and he's gonna he's gonna drown. Didn't they all are?
51:07
Speaker 4: Danny. It's always a pleasure to have you on the
51:10
Speaker 4: show each Monday. Now, are you gonna be back with us?
