- Rick Mullen: Hey everybody, welcome to Hatrix on official flyers podcast. This is Rick Mullin. I'll be your host tonight. And we are going to talk about the Philadelphia Flyers versus the Detroit Red Wings. Man, what a game. That was a fantastic game. Most of it. Most of it. We'll talk. We'll talk in depth. But the Flyers came out flying. They played the other day against the Blackhawks. They absolutely dominated the Blackhawks. They came out tonight against the Detroit Red Wings, a team that we have to beat three out of three times here at the end of the year for us to have a good chance of getting into the playoffs. And the Flyers came out big. They came out playing hard, skiing, cycling, passing, forechecking, shooting, and most importantly, scoring. The Flyers absolutely dominated this game, dominated this game. Let's go over the numbers. So Detroit had 32 shots tonight, the Phillies 27. Detroit had 22 hits, the Phillies 25. And Detroit had 16 penalty minutes to the Flyers 6 penalty minutes. Flyers had a 56.9 % face-off percentage versus the Red Wings 43.1%. And I know those numbers seemed a little tight for some of it, but it was not that way for most of the game all the way through the first and second period. The fires were killing Detroit. They were all over Detroit and kind of let's talk through it. So Owen Tippett, what a game for Owen Tippett. He opens the scoring up at 407 of the first period. He scores again at like 1222 of the second period. He scores again in the third period, 7.18 into the third period. He has three goals. Noah Cates scores in the second period. Flyers are up four to nothing in the third with like maybe 13 minutes left in the game. So playing hard. I mean, the Flyers dominated them four to nothing. ⁓ Tibbitt was an absolute. beast. His speed tonight was incredible. He was blowing around people. He was in and out of guys. He was splitting defense. He was going wide around defense. He played such a great game. mean, this guy is an absolute power forward that any team in this league would like to get their hands on. And the Flyers, I don't care what anyone says out there. The Flyers cannot trade this guy, cannot trade him. He is untouchable in my opinion. He's a power forward. He skates hard. He has so much skill. Yeah, he's a little fluky here and there and he runs into dry spells. But sooner or later, he's going to put this together and we're going to miss out on this guy if we move him. You know, he is untradeable in my opinion. You hold this guy. His salary cap is incredibly small compared to what his upside can be. And with the rising cap market here, he's going to be a steal for any team that gets him. And that team needs to be the Flyers. The Flyers cannot trade this guy. Great game for Owen Tippett tonight. We saw Noah Cates score again. Noah is playing fantastic. Just incredible. This team looks so good. And then we got into that part of the third period where we always do. You know, the Flyers turn around and they are at there's like what 13, 14 minutes left in the game. And there's a little bit of a breakdown. I think it was one of the Detroit's ⁓ defenseman throws the puck down the ice to the left hand ⁓ side of the net. So it hits the boards and comes back out front trying to do a bank pass to ⁓ Appleton. And Appleton actually gets down the ice first, he gets to that pass and he blows one past Vlad. ⁓ And Vlad stood on his head all night long. He did really well. And it's four to one. Four to one like, okay, no big deal. You know, there's a It was at the 1343 mark of the third. We figured there's not that much time left, like seven minutes or so. And okay, we're to get through this, right? Vlad missed out on his shutout, but we're going to win this game. No worries. Well, lo and behold, two minutes later, Alex Debrinket stuffs one. Now it's four to two. A minute after that, like 16-14, Lucas Raymond stuffs one. It's now four to three. And you can see the flyers are running around. They're falling apart. The guys on the ice are killing like these six on fives that they're throwing out at us and they're tired and they're putting big bodies in front of the net and Vlad can't see them and these goals are going in. Got a little got really nervous there. So there's three minutes or so left in the game. Detroit goes back to the wheelhouse and does the same thing. They start pulling their goalie and they're pressing hard. And lo and behold, finally, Sean Couturier, what's it three games in a row? He's got a goal. Sean Couturier goes and he buries a shot. an open netter from make between the blue line and the red line and he puts us up five to three and that's how the game ends. The game ends five to three flyers. So we all thought it was going to be like a four to one five to one blowout and it got really tight there late in the third. The flyers sat back played some day and you know it bit him it bit him again. So man I just hope they can learn. learn from this stuff. know, definitely learn from this stuff. You know, keep taking it at these teams when you know, you're going and destroying these teams and these other teams are fighting to ⁓ play in a game. You have to keep that foot on their neck and just keep playing hard and keep possession and keep playing offense. So ⁓ anyhow, great game. was good to see the Flyers actually win this game. We needed to win. We're back at it tomorrow against Dallas. going to be a hard one. It would be fantastic if the Flyers could pull off an upset and beat Dallas. But God knows, know, Dallas is a really deep team and ⁓ you know, it's probably one of the books that everyone thinks we're going to lose. So, you know, it would be great if we could flip that and actually win it. You know, a couple of things like the powerplay, powerplay worked, you powerplay, we got a goal. ⁓ got a goal. It was a ⁓ Cates and Mishkoff in the front and the point shot came in and Cates and Mishkoff were like digging away, digging away, trying to get it. Cates, was able to actually push it underneath the arm of a sprawling ⁓ Detroit goalie and he knocked it in the net and we got a power play goal tonight. So ⁓ good see a power play goal. We had an open net goal. ⁓ We a hat trick by Tippett, so it was, it was a pretty exciting game. We finally started scoring some goals. ⁓ You know, this is a big sign. The Flyers just aren't quitting. The Flyers are playing as hard as they can every game here. ⁓ they had a really bad showing against Columbus, but for some reason, Columbus just has our number ⁓ and Flyers struggle with them. But these other games that they're playing, they're in them. They're in them for most of the night. They're playing hard until we get up. And then when we get up, we start kind ⁓ of off that gas pedal and that's where we get into trouble. So hopefully they can learn to, like I said, stay on that gas pedal, keep that foot down and keep trying to get goals. Don't stop, take the pressure and off yourself and keep going at them. What everyone has been waiting for, Michigan State lost tonight. I believe they were up by two goals. I think it was like three to one. I think in the third period, Wisconsin, I believe they were playing actually came back, tied the game, forced overtime, and they scored in overtime and they upset Michigan State. So, Marton's college career is done now. He's going to be available for the Flyers. I expect within a week for Danny Breyer to have him signed to a contract and for this kid to be in our practice and in a game very soon. So it's going to be great. We're going to be able to see Marton for a ⁓ longer stretch than we all thought we were going to see him for. So he's going to get some games with the Flyers, I'm sure. ⁓ If he kept going on and he went to the Frozen Four, he was probably only going to see maybe one or two games here with the Flyers. But now he's going to see ⁓ a bunch more. So we're going to have the opportunity, hopefully, to get Marton into the lineup, see what he has, get a really good look at him at the end of this year here. I'm excited. I hope this kid gets here soon. I hope the Flyers bring them in really quick. I'm anxious to see them. ⁓ Some of the things I have to question all the time and I'm sorry, you know, I'm always questioning Rick Toggett. And I did have a concern tonight, you know, the third period late in the third period when the Flyers were, you know, they were gassed. They're out there playing six on five, ⁓ know, Detroit scoring on us. And there was a time there where I'm sitting there screaming at the TV like, oh my God, call a timeout, call a timeout. And Rick Taki did not call a timeout. He did not try to bring that team in, calm them down, give them a little bit of a break, and get them back on that ice and maybe mess Detroit's game up here a little bit, or rhythm up, or that's what. baffled me tonight. You know, there's always at least one baffling experience with Taken. And this was one of them. You know, I don't know why, you know, he I don't know why he won't take a timeout, but there should be a timeout call there if he called a timeout there. Like maybe that third goal doesn't go in and that game's not as tight at the end of the game. But he didn't he didn't he didn't call timeout. He didn't try to slow the pace down. He didn't try to reassure his guys or, ⁓ you know, nothing. Give them a break. Anything he he didn't use his timeout and I he did. ⁓ Again, we won, Flyers won, ⁓ didn't back to hurt him. But ⁓ I don't know, I have called a timeout there, you know, talk to the team a little bit, gave them a little bit of rest if that's all they were doing. You know, if you don't want to talk to them, just bring them over to the bench, let them get a rest, don't say a word. And you know, that message is loud and clear. that was for them to get their heads together and, focus on playing better D and not giving anything up. So. Maybe he felt that the game was out of reach for Detroit and he didn't expect them to dump three pucks in the net and He didn't call anything so He should have I think after the second goal. We should have you know after the third goal Maybe he should have ⁓ buddy ⁓ fires live through it ⁓ and are moving on with the two points in ⁓ Regular so real good game by the fires. I'm excited to see You know more tone coming up ⁓ really seeing Coots ⁓ actually bury a couple goals here in the last three games or so. Really good to see Kate scoring some goals. Devo put some points on the board tonight. most importantly, Hatrick from Tippett. Really good to see. He could have probably had four or five goals tonight, no doubt about it. I think he hit the post on one. He passed instead of shooting for an open net. He basically passed it over to Kitoria, who actually put the puck in the net and I think, you Tippett could have went and did it himself and had a four goal game, but he was very unselfish. it was good to pass it back to the captain, let the captain get a goal and, ⁓ get a little confidence as well. So good, good, good game for ⁓ Owen Tippett. Our of the night, hands down, Owen Tippett. ⁓ And he is better and better all the time here.
