- 0:00Speaker 1: But we know over the weekend, well, it usually happens
- 0:03Speaker 1: at Fanny Bay, but this year we saw competitors take
- 0:07Speaker 1: to the sea in the iconic darw And open water
- 0:10Speaker 1: swim and joining us on the line to tell us
- 0:12Speaker 1: how it all went from the Darwen Surf Club. We've
- 0:15Speaker 1: got the president there, Michelle Taylor. Good morning to you.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Michelle, Good morning, Kay.
- 0:20Speaker 1: How are you on really well? How did it all
- 0:22Speaker 1: go on the weekend?
- 0:25Speaker 2: It was amazing success. I've been part of Fanny Baseline
- 0:29Speaker 2: probably for ten years now. We had one year that
- 0:33Speaker 2: went we didn't do it when so she COVID was
- 0:36Speaker 2: here yep, and we had blowing reports from swimmers, official
- 0:41Speaker 2: water safety yep. It was a success.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Oh good stuff, Michelle. How many swimmers took part this year?
- 0:48Speaker 2: We had John and four register, but I think it
- 0:52Speaker 2: was one hundred and seventy six that took to the
- 0:55Speaker 2: water in the short and the long course.
- 0:57Speaker 1: A couple of them had a big night maybe the
- 0:59Speaker 1: night before, and figured.
- 1:00Speaker 2: They couldn't be It's hard to know.
- 1:04Speaker 1: It's hard to know. I often readister for things Michelle
- 1:08Speaker 1: and think I hope I get there. But you had
- 1:11Speaker 1: it this year at Casarina Beach rather than rather than
- 1:15Speaker 1: Fanny Bay. Why was that?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well, what happened was there was a double booking with
- 1:21Speaker 2: Termit at the East Coast Reserve, so we had to
- 1:24Speaker 2: think on our feet and we decided to change the
- 1:29Speaker 2: course and we brought it back to our club, which
- 1:31Speaker 2: was a really great idea.
- 1:32Speaker 1: It's not good on you being able to adapt like that.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And how was the course this year given the fact
- 1:37Speaker 1: that it was a bit different to what you usually do.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Look, I think everybody had their concerns at the beginning.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Swimmers were arming and hoering about it if it was
- 1:46Speaker 2: going to be as good as Fanny Bay. But the
- 1:50Speaker 2: reports were blowing and people actually said, I really hope
- 1:53Speaker 2: you're going to do it here again. They loved Fanny Bay,
- 1:56Speaker 2: but they would prefer it at the club. They loved
- 2:00Speaker 2: being at the club at the end, at the beginning,
- 2:02Speaker 2: they loved walking along the beach to the start of
- 2:04Speaker 2: the course.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah, all good stuff, now were there? Any How did
- 2:09Speaker 1: those times go at that new course?
- 2:12Speaker 2: The times were faster. If the time and the dates
- 2:16Speaker 2: for the swim was picked by Brian Gallagher. He's a
- 2:21Speaker 2: very experienced triathlete and remember any pick the tides and
- 2:26Speaker 2: the currents. We know that the currents makes the swim
- 2:29Speaker 2: a lot faster, and so what we know from our
- 2:33Speaker 2: gun swimmer, Megan Gallagher, she I think cut her time
- 2:38Speaker 2: between eight and ten minutes shorter in the long course.
- 2:41Speaker 2: She was really flying.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah, good honor, and do you reckon those conditions had
- 2:45Speaker 1: a bit of an impact.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Oh, definitely the current. Yeah, everybody enjoyed that for sure.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Oh, how wonderful. Now you said in the end, you
- 2:56Speaker 1: got about one hundred and seventy six swimmers, people of
- 2:59Speaker 1: all ages as well, I'm assuming Michelle.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yes, our oldest swimmer, he was a man of the
- 3:05Speaker 2: seventy I totally believe names, but he was amazing and
- 3:10Speaker 2: we had quite a few when there were sixty to
- 3:11Speaker 2: seventy eighth groups as well.
- 3:13Speaker 1: All good stuff and any young ones.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yes, it was an ape ross between twelve and sixteen,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and we had I think we had about four young ones.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I mean that that's the long course, I believe, and
- 3:27Speaker 2: they did really well.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Oh that is wonderful to hear and I know that. Yeah,
- 3:33Speaker 1: it's it's always such a great event and people would
- 3:36Speaker 1: have been absolutely tough to be, you know, able to
- 3:38Speaker 1: do it, and that different location. Sounds like it was
- 3:40Speaker 1: a hit. Yes, it was all good stuff. Well, wonderful
- 3:45Speaker 1: to talk to you this morning, Michelle. I really appreciate
- 3:48Speaker 1: your time and yep, no doubt we'll talk to you
- 3:50Speaker 1: again next year.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That Katie, thank you.
