Latest / The Extra Mile Podcast / #5 - Shame On You? (with Pastor Austin Young)
Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: You know, so I think lots of people can find success from their shame.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: They can try to outrun shame with success in this world and almost put it in the rearview mirror.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And I think Jesus wants us to confront it and say, hey, you can be as successful as you want in this world.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, what do you really want to give your life to?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And man, I think Peter's confronted with that moment.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Like he he wants to be who Jesus wants him to be, but he feels like he's too much of a failure.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Hey, welcome everybody again.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: We're back for another extra mile.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Again, Pastor Austin joining us and having a conversation we had this past Sunday on what's known as the recommitment of Peter.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: You know, he goes through at the end of his what seems like the end of his ministry, he denies Jesus three times publicly, and uh man, it just brings him to this point of shame.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And um, I think really what makes it so powerful in his life, so overwhelming, it feels like he can't come back, is because his confidence was so high.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: He actually made this statement.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Um, he said, like, you know, I'll I'll die for you.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: When all the other disciples um asked, Lord, is it me?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Am I the one that could fall away?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Am I the one that could deny you?
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Like Peter doubled down and said, Man, I would even die for you.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And so he didn't.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: He bailed on Jesus just like the rest of the disciples.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And, you know, so the reason I want to have this conversation is I imagine there's lots of people who are watching this, listening to this, who have gone through their own seasons of shame where we made promises to God, I'll never do this again, I'll always do this.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And and we fall short, we find ourselves missing the mark, um, not measuring up to our commitments.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And I know in my own life, especially early in my spiritual journey, and something unfortunately I have never outgrown, um, but I make promises and commitments that I don't always fall through, follow through with, and um brings me to this place of guilt and shame.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And so that's what we talked about Sunday.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I don't know, what do you do when you feel the shame and what do you do when you feel the guilt?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: How do you overcome that?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the approach that I've kind of been trying to learn and have been experiencing more in the last several years is um really coming back to I go back to James 5 a lot where it talks about, you know, if you're sick, pray for the elders to come anoint you with oil and pray for healing.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: And it says, confess your sins to one another so that you may be healed.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: And uh that's something that I've really been thinking about a lot, trying to practice, teaching a lot, especially like young adults and people that I'm working with, is like this idea of bringing that shame and that guilt into the light is where you find the healing.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: That if you keep that shame and you keep that guilt, it's just like this bottomless pit that just keeps dragging you into more and more isolation, more and more darkness, more and more hopelessness.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And I think the way that we combat shame is by bringing it to the light, bringing it and and confessing it to someone else that can look us in the eye and go, I still love you.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And then you're like, wait, that's not right.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: You're supposed to think I'm a horrible person now.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: And it's like, well, no, there's there's that experience of healing that comes when the shame is actually exposed, I think.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, the uh you mentioned it, the funny thing about scripture is God makes it clear, like at the end of the day, all of our sin is going to be exposed.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Like Jesus says that it's gonna be shouted from the rooftops.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And so the his heart is for us to expose it now, not to embarrass us, not to shame us.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: He's trying to get us out of shame.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: When we have hidden sin or we have guilt, um, we have things we've not really confronted, man, that weighs on our heart and makes us run from God.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: So Jesus wants us to deal with it, and he knows the way to deal with it is to bring it to him and let's let's confess it.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's to a brother or sister in Christ.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Let's pray about it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And it's really in the exposure we find freedom.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And the devil tells us, no, man, in exposure, that's where you're that's where you're gonna get found out.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: That's when you're gonna be, people are gonna find out you're a phony, you're not real.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And so um, man, shame is just so powerful, man.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus gives us the key, man.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: You know, bring it out to the light, and we want to continue to hide it.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: And um, I would probably say that most Christians are dealing with something they're probably keeping under the carpet, something they're hiding and probably embarrassed if they ever anybody ever found out, I would be rejected.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And it's like, and I think the irony in that is you are you're already experiencing that separation from other people that you're afraid of experiencing.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: You're like, but then they'd reject me.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Then I wouldn't be close to them, then they wouldn't be my friend.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: But when you're living with that shame, you're already experiencing that distance from the people around you.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: You're already hiding, you're already not being able to be your full self when you're in the room with them.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: So it's like you're already experiencing the very thing you're afraid of.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: And what you'll find out is that when you bring it to the light, you'll actually be met with like a relief of like, oh, I'm actually me.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: I'm actually all the way here, I'm actually with these people.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And then you're then you have to deal with the dynamics of whatever that could mean.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: But at least you get to actually be yourself and be there and find out, will they still love me if they know who I am?
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And that's like, I mean, that's the battle of marriage, is like you find out that the person knows you the best, and you're like, so you're still here?
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: And that's why it's that's why it's such an amazing relationship because you are kind of like, nah, I'm still in it because I know the worst parts of you, and I still choose to stay.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: And it's like, and that's what you can find in your other relationships if you're willing to confront the shame.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And I think that's super helpful.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: You know, I think it's amazing that, you know, our spouses, you mentioned it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, again, that is the beauty of marriage, is they know us better than anybody and love us in spite of us.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: But they discover that as they go.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Jesus knew that up front.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: When he picked us, he knew our mess, he knew our darkness, he knew all those things.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, that's what I want to talk about for a few minutes is again, you said it and I love that statement.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Shame separates us, it makes us want to go the other direction, wants us to hide from God.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: It's what we what you found in the garden.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: You know, Adam and Eve went and hid themselves when they first sinned.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: And this is what we find in the story of Peter.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: You know, he he denies Christ and he's filled with so much shame and guilt.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: He runs away from his call back to his old career.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: You know, we know the story Jesus finds him in Luke chapter 5.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: He's a fisherman.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And uh Jesus says, Hey, come and follow me and I'll make you a fisher of men.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: He puts this call, puts this um anointing on his life, and that's the very thing he runs from in his shame.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: He feels like I can't be that person because I made that mistake.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: And what we find is that um Jesus, and this is the beautiful thing, no matter how much we run from God, man, he keeps on pursuing us.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And I think um it's easy for a lot of people in church or out of church to believe that somehow God gives up on us.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: And I think while that feeling is natural, it's not biblical, it's not scriptural.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: What you find is God continues to pursue his people, he continues to pursue people he loves, and that's all of us.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And so what we find in the story of Peter is um in uh in John chapter 21, this is where the story of his restoration picks up.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: It says, Jesus appeared again to the disciples.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And the statement I made Sunday is sometimes to really get what God's word is teaching us, you need to zoom in on the details.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: There are numbers and people and names that are listed there for a reason, and sometimes you have to zoom out for context.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And so when you read Jesus appeared again to the disciples, obviously that's hinting to that he came earlier.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And when you go back to John chapter 20, what we find is, and I think this is so beautiful, Jesus appeared two other times before this time to the disciples, and his message was peace.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like, hey, let's talk about how you blew it.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Hey, let's hey, let's sit down and let's rehash why you ran from me, why you abandoned me, why you you did exactly what I said you were gonna do.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Man, Jesus, his introductory statement, his conversation is peace, which biblically means the hostile relationship that we had because of sin, it's healed because of my my sacrifice.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why do you think people have such a hard time hearing peace and hear they want to hear condemnation?
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: I think I mean I think it's you you have one of two responses to the gospel, I think.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: And we've talked about this before.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I talked about it um on Easter with or with our young adults, is you have one of these two reactions to being forgiven of your sin.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: One is you're like, this is incredible.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: God's gonna forgive me no matter what I do.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: Let's go wheels off because I I know he's got me.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Or if you grew up in church or you're like me or you have a type A personality, you're probably more along the lines of, oh my goodness, I've been saved by this holy God.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: I don't want to ever mess up.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Like I'm so overwhelmed by the forgiveness and the grace that like I need to live up to this standard and and I have to kind of repay him for what he's done.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: And so then when you do fall short, you're like, Well, I messed it up.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, it the grace was good enough for me when I was like a sinner and didn't know better.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: But now that I know better, of course he's not going to take me back.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Like, why would he take me back when I know and I've experienced and I've tasted and seen the Lord is good and I still chose lesser things?
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: It's like, well, it's not good enough for that.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Like now I've screwed up too much because I was good, now I'm not.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Where like when you live your life wheels off and he radically saves you, you're like, well, of course he could forgive that.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: I didn't know, I was so lost.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: You're like, now I've been found and I still made myself lost again.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Like, that's not cool.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Why would he forgive me?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: I think that's the tension we deal with.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I think what Peter really is expressing when he runs isn't that he fell from his call.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: It's that he fell from his confidence.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Man, his confidence was just off the like I'll I'll never deny you.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And that that gap.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And so sometimes we set ourselves up to think like once we come to Jesus, like, hey, now we're perfect.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And the reality is we still struggle, we still have desires that are out of place.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And we talked about that last time.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And so uh, you know, we didn't talk about this Sunday, but this this idea that I think you're talking about is sometimes it's grace abused, and sometimes it's grace refused.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And I have found myself unfortunately on both sides of those.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Grace abused is like, hey, Jesus, wait, Jesus will forgive me of anything.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: My pastor said, no matter how far I've run, no matter what I've done, Jesus can forgive me.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's that's enticing to come to a God who can love us that radically.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But then we come to him and we're like, we always have that like get out of jail free card.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I'm gonna go to this place or do this thing, but man, the grace of God, my pastor said the grace of God's enough.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And the Bible says where sin abounds, grace abounds even more.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And it it gives us this false confidence that we can live wheels off, we can live however we want.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: So I think, man, we need to be careful.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: And Paul warns us in Romans hey, should we continue to sin just so grace can can abound?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Should we push it to the limits and see how big this grace really is?
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: He says, certainly not.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Like, grace is always gonna be greater than your sin.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: But I think there's this qualifier, it's gonna be greater than your confessed sin.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be greater than your repentance.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't think we can just like see how far we can push the boundary and not really care.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So again, we got to be careful that we don't abuse grace, but then there's the other side where you're talking about we have to we have to pay God back.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And when we feel like we can't pay him back with our actions, we refuse grace.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And so, man, anybody watching this or listening, if you're on the side where you're living however you want, man, you got to get out of jail free card.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I think you need to be careful not to abuse this incredible gift that God's given you.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: But if you're on the other side and you know you've missed the mark and you know you've fallen short, you're in a season of shame, man, don't refuse grace.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Jesus is pursuing you.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe even the fact that you found this podcast is another way of God saying, Man, He still loves you.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: He knew you were gonna blow it here.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, so don't refuse the grace that can save us.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: So I think that's I I I love that, and I love how maybe you could even get into it more.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Um the story of with Jesus kind of reenacting Peter's calling, his original calling, he found him fishing again.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: I I loved that angle because um if it was me, I would have been doing that in order to prove a point rather than extend the grace and redeem it, you know.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: And so it could you just speak to that a little bit, like that picture that you showed of of him, a quick recap of that, because I thought that was so powerful.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: So again, you know, Peter goes back to fishing, and um, I Jesus, I believe, sets him up.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: He goes out fishing because that's that's his background, that's what he knows.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: And obviously, I can't be an apostle.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, I blew it, I missed the mark.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: So he goes back to what he feels like he is good at, and that's fishing.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And he has a absolutely bomb of a night.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: He catches no fish, which is the same experience he had in Luke 5.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: He'd been fishing all night, didn't catch anything.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And Jesus, who's a carpenter, tells him how to fish, and he has this incredibly successful day of fishing because he does it Jesus' way.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And Jesus sets him up for the same moment, basically saying, Hey, Peter, you can go back to fishing, but and I can be helping be successful there, but your call is to fish for men.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I think he puts him in this moment of he doesn't want them to fail, he just wants him to realize his success is found in a relationship with Jesus.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And so he calls him back.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Hey, again, it's it's another opportunity to hear peace.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And you know, so I think a lot lots of people can find success from their shame.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: They can try to outrun shame with success in this world and almost put it in the rearview mirror.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And I think Jesus wants us to confront it and say, Hey, you can be as successful as you want in this world, but at the end of the day, what do you really want to give your life to?
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: And man, I think Peter's confronted with that moment.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Like he he wants to be who Jesus wants him to be, but he feels like he's too much of a failure.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And Jesus reminds him, Hey, success, it's only found in me anyways.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And so I I think that is um again, man, grace on display.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's a I don't know, man, grace, even saying the word, it's just so easy to roll off our tongue and to really think about what grace is and what it does for us is is humbling.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: And I I love that second part because I've heard so many teachings on, you know, if you love me, feed my sheep.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: And he does it three times, and it's like, see, he's he's doing the three denials.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: And I loved the angle that you took because it wasn't a lot of times.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I've heard it taught like he was like kind of going, I'm gonna make you re-answer those questions and see if you claim me three times.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And your angle on it was so much more helpful than that one, and I think so much more reflective of the grace and the peace that Jesus kept offering him and almost had to like hit him over the head with it to really understand what he was trying to do in that moment.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, Peter denied Jesus three times, and that's what Jesus said up front, hey, you before the rooster crows, you're gonna deny me three times.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And so when Jesus asked Peter three times, hey, do you love me?
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: We feel like I don't know, that's a natural setup.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: He denied him three times, he has to affirm his love three times.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: And the reason we know that's not true is because Jesus isn't pointing out his failure, he's pointing out his future.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: Hey, if you love me, man, then let's get back to the call.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Hey, I know you blew it.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Um, I know what you did wrong.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, that's not hidden from me.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: And you're not hiding it from me out on this fishing boat.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: So let's get back.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Hey, if you love me, feed my sheep.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Let's let's move forward.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, so many of us, we need to understand we can move forward from our failure and not just move forward from one failure.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: A lot of times I find, myself included, I've been found in cyclical behavior where I'm just caught on the trap of doing the same thing.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And even if someone finds themself there, man, the call of Jesus to move forward, that he invites us past our past and beyond our failures is um, man, that's what the gospel is all about.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I want to dig into one thing that I think is, you know, really amazing.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: I didn't have time to get into Sunday, but when you spend time and again you pull out and see the larger context, Jesus almost, well not almost, he predicts, he prophesies that Peter's gonna face this incredible temptation.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: And he tells him this he says, and this is right after the Last Supper.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, Simon Simon, Satan is asked to sift you like wheat, which is this separating process.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: When you sift wheat, you're you're separating the shaft from the wheat.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: What Jesus is saying is, man, Satan is gonna set you up for this temptation and he's trying to separate you from your faith.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And so Jesus goes on and says, But I've pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: So when you've repented and turn to me again, strengthen your brothers, which is a call ahead to feed my sheep.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: So what's wild to me is Jesus knows this moment is coming of temptation.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: You're gonna be tempted to deny me.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: And this is not how confident you are.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: You have to understand this is a spiritual battle.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: And so I think everybody who's facing shame needs to be reminded like you probably didn't just make a bad decision.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: You're a victim to spiritual warfare.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: And when I say victim, not that you didn't have something to do with it, but we're in a spiritual battle.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And when we don't stand and fight, we're always gonna fall.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Well, how could Peter have fought?
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Well, instead of like humbling himself, he's like, I'll never deny you.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: And we know where they go, they go right from the Last Supper to where?
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: The Garden of Gethsemane.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And Jesus says, Hey, stand here and pray with me that you don't fall into temptation.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: So Jesus warns him temptation's coming, then invites him into the solution, which is getting close to God in prayer.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Hey, stay here and pray with me that you'll not fall into temptation.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: And what do the disciples do?
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fall asleep.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: They go to sleep.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: You know, again, man, it's so easy for us to miss how we find strength.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: And our strength is not in ourselves.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Again, I think that's where Peter missed it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: It wasn't in the moment of the denial, it was before that.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: His confidence was so strong in his own feelings rather than his faith.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: And so he's like, man, I can I can sleep through the prayer meeting because I don't really, I'm I'm Peter.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And we found, we find he ignored the warning.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: He slept through the solution of prayer, and then he falls.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, everybody watching this, you need to know you have a real spiritual enemy that wants to bring you to a place where you just don't miss the mark, but that mark marks you with shame because then we start to spiral down to the place where we run from God instead of running to God.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: And so I'm so thankful, man, that Jesus showed up once and said peace and showed up a second time and said peace.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: And even though Peter was hard-headed, showed up again and just said, Hey man, we're we're good.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: That's why I died on the cross.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Let's let's move on with the call I gave you originally.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: And that's not the fish for fish, but that's the fishermen, let's go feed my sheep.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I think everybody watching this needs to be reminded that God can redeem anybody who's willing to hear the call of peace and accept the gift of salvation and lean back into grace instead of leaning into shame.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and his constant pursuit.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: And like it's kind of like, hey, peace.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I we've got we're good.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: And he says it again, and we're good, and Peter still doesn't really believe him.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: And so then he like he sits down, he makes him breakfast, he talks, he goes, We're good, man.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I need you to do what I've created you to do.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: I need like, and like, you know, and sometimes we need that.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: We need like someone to walk us through slowly and personally, and that's that's that's the grace that blows me away.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Is I'm like, it would be enough if he just said, I said you're good, now do it.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: You know, but he's like, No, I'm gonna, I'm gonna walk you through this because I have I want what's best for you.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: I have a way of life that is gonna give you the most life.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna take the time to get you to where you need to be.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: And that's that's just so so incredible.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a it's a public denial.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Again, Peter did it in front of everybody, which again, Jesus says, those who deny me in public, those who deny me before men, I'll deny me before my father, which ultimately that's what he's going to do if we don't repent.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: But in the middle of this, because our sin is private.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Nobody knows what I'm thinking and what's some sometimes hidden in my heart.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Peter was very public with his denial.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: And man, it didn't stop Jesus from pursuing him, announcing peace to him.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: What you just said, sitting down, having breakfast with him, which was a very communal expression of relationship.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: And then just again, rehashing, hey, we're good.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Let's get back to the call.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: And again, you flip out of John, you flip one chapter over, you're in Acts chapter one.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Man, they've received the Holy Spirit.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: He didn't earn it, he received it as a gift.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Acts chapter two, the same Peter who denied Jesus publicly, is out preaching the gospel, and 2,000 people get saved.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: And it's just the message of restoration.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: So again, man, shame is so powerful if we allow it to remain powerful.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: But when we come to Jesus and we allow the grace to overcome our shame, man, he gets us right back to our call, right back into our relationship, right back where, man, living for Jesus is greater than being a career fisherman.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: It's about being a fisher of men.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what's the final thought you have.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: What would you want to say to somebody who's maybe wrestling with shame?
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I I think you summed it up great is that there's there's this fear that bringing it to the light is going to ruin everything.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And it's actually the beginning of the healing and the freeing process.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: And um, I think this story proves more than anything that when you bring it to the light, God's gonna be the first one there to embrace you.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: And like when you come to him repentant, you know, the word says he can't he can't resist it.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: He cannot resist a repentant heart.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: So when we come to him and we bring things to the light to him and and repent, like he is ready to restore, he's ready to redeem, he's ready to move forward and walk with us through it.
- 21:33unknown: Yeah.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: I I would share, maybe just say, maybe not a final thought, but a story.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Um, I was sitting in a service, this is quite a while ago.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: Um, pornography through the internet, man, was catching traction.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Again, I've been around for a while and you know, seen the escalation of the internet.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: And man, just pornography is so addicting.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And once someone's addicted to it, man, brings so much shame and guilt.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: And people feel like if somebody knew, they would be embarrassed of me and disconnect from me and God's disconnected from me.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: And so I sat in this service, and this pastor made a call, and it was a service for all men.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: And he said, Hey, listen, if you're here and you're wrestling with um an addiction to pornography and tonight you want to get free, he said, I know nobody has the boldness to come forward.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: So I want to invite you.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: The altar call was reversed.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: He said, I want to invite you to go to the back of the room.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: And um, and I remember sitting and I was sitting on the front row as a pastor, and you know, I wasn't wrestling with pornography, thankfully.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And I remember thinking, I wonder how many people are responding.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And you know that temptation to, you know, open your eye.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: And uh, and I'll never forget, I look back, and there was probably three-quarters of the men in that room had crowded through the back of that room.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And a lot of men found freedom that day because they were willing to say, hey, I'm not gonna let shame keep me in my past.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna allow the grace of Jesus to move me in my future.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: And so whether it's pornography or some other hidden sin or something else bringing shame in your life, bring it to Jesus.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And if you're not willing to bring it to him, he's gonna keep pursuing you until you come to the place that you know he loves you and he's willing to bring you peace and reconcile you to a God who radically loves you.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: And again, that's the story of Peter.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: That's my story, that's your story, and it can be your story too.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: So, hey, thanks again for joining us for the extra mile.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: We'll catch you next week.
