- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, over
- 0:49Speaker 1: thirteen years strong. We got a great show coming your
- 0:51Speaker 1: way this week. We got a uh, if you're watching
- 0:54Speaker 1: on YouTube, got a still photo of Eric because there
- 0:58Speaker 1: was some connectivity issues here.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Huh.
- 1:01Speaker 3: How you doing, buddy?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Yeah, really really annoyed right now.
- 1:06Speaker 4: If I had a few more minutes, you can probably
- 1:07Speaker 4: figure it out. But yeah, on a time crunch. We're
- 1:10Speaker 4: on time crunch.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'm len, I'm lend today.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yes, a bizarre week folks with family schedules, work schedules,
- 1:19Speaker 1: things like that.
- 1:19Speaker 3: That's why we're.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Getting this podcast up a day later. But appreciate you
- 1:24Speaker 1: joining us. Longtime listeners. It is good to see you.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Good to be in your ears. If you're new to
- 1:29Speaker 1: the show, can always head on over to Philadelphia Sports
- 1:32Speaker 1: Table dot com. We're over on Instagram as well YouTube.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Just search out the Philadelphia Sports Table and uh yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I think that's that's it for here.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Eric.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Let's just like get into some of the topics that
- 1:45Speaker 1: we're going to be getting into.
- 1:46Speaker 3: First, we got to talk about Lebron James. We wanted
- 1:48Speaker 3: to do folks. We wanted to.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Do a special PSD special and we just couldn't find
- 1:53Speaker 1: the time to do it right after Lebron James was
- 1:55Speaker 1: signed last week. But we're gonna talk about what him
- 1:59Speaker 1: coming to the Sixers means for this team and is
- 2:01Speaker 1: this whose team is this? We should say, I mean
- 2:03Speaker 1: as this is Tyre's Maxi's team right at this point,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I'm going.
- 2:07Speaker 3: To talk about it.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Eagles training camp has started, going to get into some
- 2:10Speaker 1: storylines there, and also Bryce Harper Don Mattingly both appeared
- 2:15Speaker 1: to be a little annoyed with each other and what
- 2:17Speaker 1: are the implications of this recent rift. And we got
- 2:21Speaker 1: more Phillies talk this week with our good friend Destiny
- 2:24Speaker 1: Legardo from Phillies Nation dot com. She's going to join
- 2:27Speaker 1: us to talk about this Phillies team as the trade
- 2:29Speaker 1: deadline approaches. A lot of challenges that this team has.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So Eric, why don't we just like get right into it,
- 2:35Speaker 1: because the biggest news in the world of Philly sports,
- 2:38Speaker 1: And no, it's not just Eagles training camp starting, it's
- 2:40Speaker 1: the fact that Lebron James is now a member of
- 2:43Speaker 1: this Philadelphia seventy six.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Ers team and organization.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Man, what this means, I mean there are so many
- 2:50Speaker 1: implications for where this team is going to go this
- 2:54Speaker 1: upcoming season, what the expectations are now for this team
- 2:57Speaker 1: this upcoming season. I got to say I didn't believe
- 3:01Speaker 1: it when we had the notifications coming to our phones.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I had a CBS Sports notification that said Lebron James
- 3:07Speaker 1: is signing with the Philadelphia seventy six ers. I'm like,
- 3:09Speaker 1: wait a minute, this has to be some sort of
- 3:11Speaker 1: like joke. It has to be some sort of prank.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But no, man, it happened. And then I got the
- 3:16Speaker 1: text message from you. Oh my god, guys, look look
- 3:19Speaker 1: at what's happening here.
- 3:20Speaker 3: It was.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It was amazing and like the vibes of where this
- 3:24Speaker 1: team is now going to go this season, the vibes
- 3:26Speaker 1: are high.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Man, You're gonna make this show explicit because we got
- 3:31Speaker 4: Lebron fucking James. Yeah, fuck you sis, Yes, yes, I
- 3:36Speaker 4: mean that is the story right now of in Philadelphia sports.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean, he didn't necessarily choose Philadelphia, but he you know,
- 3:44Speaker 4: he chose this franchise. It was his best obviously his
- 3:48Speaker 4: best chance given all the options he had on the whiteboard,
- 3:52Speaker 4: of winning another title, and we signed Lebron James probably
- 3:57Speaker 4: what the second best player of all time?
- 3:59Speaker 1: You have to formulallion dollars this year exactly. He doesn't
- 4:03Speaker 1: care about the money. He doesn't care about the money.
- 4:05Speaker 4: No, no, And with some recent changes, you know, we're
- 4:07Speaker 4: under the first apron. I know that's like boring cap talk,
- 4:11Speaker 4: but it's huge because it allows them flexibility to keep
- 4:14Speaker 4: even doing some more more tinkering to the roster and
- 4:18Speaker 4: just make this even better. And with the Lebron effect
- 4:24Speaker 4: is already being felt, not just in the city, not
- 4:27Speaker 4: just in the NBA and all the financials involved. But
- 4:30Speaker 4: you know, Contavious Colwell Pope Ye took a buyout with
- 4:35Speaker 4: the Grizzlies and immediately joined the Sixers. Yes, and when
- 4:38Speaker 4: is the last time before the season starts? You know,
- 4:43Speaker 4: veterans are taking buyouts and joining the Philadelphia seventy s.
- 4:46Speaker 3: They want to come here, They want to come.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Here, and that's never happened before as far as I know.
- 4:52Speaker 4: This is this is the biggest free agent move for
- 4:56Speaker 4: the Sixers besides maybe.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Moses Malone in eighty three. Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just it just changes the entire dynamic and
- 5:05Speaker 4: makeup of the team, the excitement level, not just here obviously,
- 5:08Speaker 4: but like just globally and it he flipped the NBA
- 5:14Speaker 4: on its head. You know, there are all terior emotives. Obviously,
- 5:17Speaker 4: the day he announced it, he put out a tops
- 5:20Speaker 4: card that was that was a big deal and he
- 5:22Speaker 4: wasn't Philly talking to the fanatics people. So it's like, yeah,
- 5:25Speaker 4: there was definitely business decisions here, and he's going to
- 5:28Speaker 4: live in New York and probably start to like foster
- 5:30Speaker 4: an environment there too.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's going a helicopter. Yeah, he's going to a helicopter
- 5:33Speaker 1: to Philly.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 4: That scares the shit out of me, but I know,
- 5:37Speaker 4: I know, yeah, but uh, there's there's again like a
- 5:43Speaker 4: bunch of signings recently. There's no downside to this, no all,
- 5:46Speaker 4: he didn't create a fervor in the city for the team.
- 5:49Speaker 4: And he's still fucking good. I mean, twenty points and
- 5:53Speaker 4: like six rebounds last year. Like, well, to me, you're
- 5:56Speaker 4: starting four. He's in the right spot. We can talk
- 5:58Speaker 4: basketball too.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Well, that's want to get into the basketball aspects of
- 6:01Speaker 1: this too. And you just mentioned something from a rebounding
- 6:04Speaker 1: perspective that I really wanted to hone in on because
- 6:06Speaker 1: I haven't really heard a lot of folks talking about
- 6:08Speaker 1: it too much because, like, in addition to the obvious
- 6:12Speaker 1: playmaking that he is able to do on the court,
- 6:15Speaker 1: we know that rebounding has been a major concern for
- 6:19Speaker 1: the Sixers team for several several years. Look even Joel Embiid,
- 6:23Speaker 1: it's never like an elite rebounder at all, and of
- 6:26Speaker 1: course his body's broken down over the years due to
- 6:29Speaker 1: the laundry list of injuries that he's battled, rebounding has
- 6:33Speaker 1: become a bigger issue with this team. Offensive rebounding has
- 6:36Speaker 1: absolutely sucked for this team. We've talked about that a
- 6:38Speaker 1: number of times on this podcast platform. But with that
- 6:42Speaker 1: six foot nine kind of chiseled frame that we know
- 6:45Speaker 1: Lebron James has, he's he is an archetype of player
- 6:51Speaker 1: that should really help make for some interesting rebounding opportunities
- 6:55Speaker 1: for this team. He pulled in six point one rebounds
- 6:57Speaker 1: per game last year, which was the third low of
- 7:00Speaker 1: his career, but he averages seven point five rebounds per
- 7:05Speaker 1: game throughout the.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Course of his career.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And even with this not being like the peak version
- 7:10Speaker 1: of Lebron Jeames, he's a far more effective rebounder than
- 7:13Speaker 1: players like Kelly Eubray Junior or Dominic Barlow who are
- 7:17Speaker 1: tasked with this type of responsibility last season. I think
- 7:20Speaker 1: rebounding is going to be a ton better for the
- 7:23Speaker 1: team this year, specifically offensive rebounding as well well.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And just look at those two spots you just talked about.
- 7:28Speaker 4: That Uber played three in the four last year. Now
- 7:31Speaker 4: you have Jalen Brown, the three who averaged twenty nine
- 7:34Speaker 4: points in what seven rebounds last year?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're four.
- 7:38Speaker 4: You're starting four as Lebron Fucking James who can still
- 7:42Speaker 4: put up twenty points.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:44Speaker 4: This make makeup of the roster now just gives you
- 7:47Speaker 4: so much flexibility on the court. You know, Jalen Brown
- 7:52Speaker 4: is a monster three, plays really good defense. You know
- 7:56Speaker 4: he's gonna drive him crazy a couple times this year
- 7:59Speaker 4: with some inconsistent see because I know Boston fans have
- 8:01Speaker 4: the same issue, but he's surrounded by a much better
- 8:04Speaker 4: team in my opinion. Now, this this allows this allowed,
- 8:09Speaker 4: and this allows Lebron to kind of move to the
- 8:12Speaker 4: four where it's it's not as he's not going to
- 8:16Speaker 4: be running as much, right right, try and save his
- 8:20Speaker 4: legs a little bit.
- 8:22Speaker 2: He's not.
- 8:23Speaker 4: I don't think he's going to play the point very much,
- 8:25Speaker 4: but they can run offensive sets where they can utilize
- 8:29Speaker 4: his passing because he's I mean, no joke, he's one
- 8:32Speaker 4: of the five best passers in NBA history. Yeah, this
- 8:35Speaker 4: guy's basketball IQ was through the roof. And I know
- 8:38Speaker 4: there were some people who were like, LA frauds coming
- 8:41Speaker 4: to town, and I did hear some of that.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I know the anti Lebron talk out there. Simply, I
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't give a shit. It was just for the sake
- 8:50Speaker 1: of it, just for the sake of getting clicks, for
- 8:53Speaker 1: getting watches looks, and that's all that it was. It
- 8:58Speaker 1: is crazy to me because at the end of the day, Eric,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and I mean, well, let's get into you know, whose
- 9:05Speaker 1: team this is really gonna because everybody's oh, it's no
- 9:06Speaker 1: gonna be Lebron's team. No, no, no, Actually, I don't
- 9:09Speaker 1: believe it's gonna be Lebron's team. This is Tyrese Maxi's
- 9:12Speaker 1: team here. And that the bigger point that folks were
- 9:16Speaker 1: talking about about there now being too many mouths to
- 9:19Speaker 1: feed in this offense.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I mean that feels overblown to me.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there may be a little bit of
- 9:24Speaker 1: turbulence here and there in terms of this team reaching
- 9:26Speaker 1: its peak together every now and again, but having too
- 9:29Speaker 1: much talent on the roster, that's not a problem anybody
- 9:33Speaker 1: should be losing any sleepover.
- 9:36Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And and the fact that Tyrese Maxie is just going
- 9:39Speaker 1: to be starting to enter and is entering that that
- 9:42Speaker 1: prime of his career along with James, along with Jalen
- 9:47Speaker 1: Brown as well, Like, this is Tyrese Maxie's team here,
- 9:51Speaker 1: And the narrative that there's too many mouths to feed that,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I think it's bullshit, I really do. I mean, this
- 9:57Speaker 1: is they are gonna be the top contender in the
- 9:59Speaker 1: Eastern Conference my opinion, Oh for sure.
- 10:03Speaker 4: And it is definitely Tyrese's team. He you know, to
- 10:08Speaker 4: be the face of a franchise, you have to play. Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 4: and durability is a huge huge component of that. And
- 10:15Speaker 4: the nice thing about having Tyresse and vj and and
- 10:20Speaker 4: Jalen Brown as your one two three is they play.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I mean they they all played like what seventy to
- 10:26Speaker 4: seventy five to what eighty games last year? Yeah, and
- 10:28Speaker 4: they play a lot of minutes. And this won't this
- 10:32Speaker 4: won't be in Beads team. This won't be a lebronze
- 10:34Speaker 4: team because simply they're not going to play enough and that.
- 10:37Speaker 4: But here's the good news, they don't have to. Yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 4: like there's some nights where you could just roll. You
- 10:43Speaker 4: can just roll the first three I talked about out
- 10:45Speaker 4: and you could beat teams like you could absolutely beat
- 10:49Speaker 4: the Hornets or you know, the Pelicans just with those
- 10:52Speaker 4: three and you just throw in the four and the
- 10:54Speaker 4: five throughout the game, having those three playing hard like
- 10:59Speaker 4: a lot of minutes and being as fucking good.
- 11:02Speaker 2: As they are.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Because you just talked about Maxie entering his prime. If
- 11:06Speaker 4: he hasn't entered it yet, what the hell's that looked like?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Because he was phenomenal last year. He made the All
- 11:10Speaker 4: Star team. I think he was second team All NBA. Like,
- 11:14Speaker 4: to me, that's prime ish and if he still has
- 11:16Speaker 4: another step to go, that's amazing. We haven't talked about
- 11:18Speaker 4: my boy Edgecombe happen what this means for him? Yes, man,
- 11:24Speaker 4: is he gonna He is gonna delight in the presence
- 11:29Speaker 4: of lebron James because I think there's a lot of
- 11:32Speaker 4: You're gonna see a lot of backdoor cuts, a lot
- 11:35Speaker 4: of attention coming up to the three point line. To
- 11:38Speaker 4: Lebron and Jalen Brown and Maxie. That's going to allow
- 11:41Speaker 4: that that's going to open up the entire floor for
- 11:43Speaker 4: VJ to run, jump and make some of the most
- 11:47Speaker 4: spectacular alip dunks from Lebron James passes that you're gonna
- 11:51Speaker 4: see all season. And he's a worker. I've seen him
- 11:54Speaker 4: in the gym. He's he was like in the gym
- 11:56Speaker 4: the next day after the playoffs were over. This guy
- 11:58Speaker 4: wants to be great. And you know, I heard a
- 12:01Speaker 4: lot about like, well, he's just gonna average twelve points
- 12:02Speaker 4: now because everybody I was like, I don't think that's
- 12:04Speaker 4: gonna happen. Yeah, and even if he does, Yeah, he's
- 12:07Speaker 4: going to benefit from this, yeah big time. Yeah, You're
- 12:09Speaker 4: you're going to see a whole different level of Edgecombe
- 12:12Speaker 4: because he surrounded these great players. Not to mention his defense,
- 12:15Speaker 4: which is going to get even better, because he was
- 12:17Speaker 4: starting to, like he was doing some masterful stuff in
- 12:20Speaker 4: the playoffs. He remember that play on Jalen Brown where
- 12:22Speaker 4: he was playing defense with his ass stick in like
- 12:25Speaker 4: Game three I think it was, but it was brilliant
- 12:28Speaker 4: because he like led him to the led him to
- 12:30Speaker 4: the paceline, turned and it was a perfect position. It's like,
- 12:33Speaker 4: that is like next level defense. I just think you're right.
- 12:36Speaker 4: This has got to be the top contender besides the Knicks.
- 12:39Speaker 4: You can't take anything away from them, right right, But
- 12:41Speaker 4: the East is going to be strong as hell. But man,
- 12:44Speaker 4: they have reinforcements now to compete with that, and not
- 12:46Speaker 4: just compete, but I think they can make the finals.
- 12:48Speaker 1: It's it's been the most exciting type of feels and
- 12:52Speaker 1: vibes that I have had for an NBA season.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And I can't even tell you how long. Man, I
- 12:58Speaker 3: can't tell you how long.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I mean, this guy it could be like forever in
- 13:00Speaker 1: forever for me, I have not had these type of feels.
- 13:04Speaker 3: In in forever.
- 13:06Speaker 1: When you have again one of the best in the
- 13:08Speaker 1: world who's ever done it on your team, it's amazing.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Dude, I good buddy of mine from from the past.
- 13:15Speaker 2: We call him massive, right.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Yeah, because his eyes looks like he's high all the time,
- 13:22Speaker 4: so we call him massive back in the day. He
- 13:24Speaker 4: lives in Kansas City, no interest in the NBA whatsoever.
- 13:27Speaker 4: He texted me the day Lebron James got signed and
- 13:29Speaker 4: he's like, holy hell, are you excited? This is amazing.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Yeah, And I'm like, asked.
- 13:33Speaker 2: You don't care about basketball?
- 13:35Speaker 3: He was?
- 13:36Speaker 2: He even, he was like, this is incredible. I can't
- 13:38Speaker 2: believe this happened.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I'm like, you're you're absolutely right that I never it
- 13:42Speaker 4: was shocked when I saw the text, and I'm still shocked.
- 13:47Speaker 4: But man, I, what's today? The thirty first July?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yep? Can they please start training camp now?
- 13:54Speaker 1: Now?
- 13:54Speaker 2: He's please? Yeah, like, I can't wait.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Get the season started now? Than oh my gosh.
- 14:00Speaker 1: All right, well, we are gonna head to break and
- 14:02Speaker 1: when we get back, and uh, we're gonna get into
- 14:04Speaker 1: some Eagles talk, we're gonna get into some Phillies talk
- 14:07Speaker 1: as well. But we'd also love to hear from you.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Leave a comment below, if you're watching on YouTube, your
- 14:12Speaker 1: thoughts on Lebron coming to the Philadelphia seventy six ers,
- 14:15Speaker 1: what this does for ty Reese, what this does for VJ. Edgecombe,
- 14:19Speaker 1: and how Jalen Brown is gonna fit into the pieces
- 14:23Speaker 1: of what this Sixers team is gonna be. We'd absolutely
- 14:25Speaker 1: love to hear from you. We're gonna take that break
- 14:28Speaker 1: now and we come back. We got a bunch of
- 14:30Speaker 1: Eagles talk. All right, we are back and we are
- 14:35Speaker 1: with our are still framed a picture of Eric right here.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Who's the King right here? I love it? Anyway, when
- 14:46Speaker 3: the technology fails.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I know, I was all excited.
- 14:50Speaker 4: We got Lebron, I changed my screen name to the
- 14:52Speaker 4: King yep, and yeah it didn't work out.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yeah, this is what we have here. But it's an
- 14:58Speaker 1: exciting time and Eagles because one training camp is here.
- 15:03Speaker 1: We are in full training camp mode right now. But
- 15:06Speaker 1: right before training camp started, we got the news that
- 15:09Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles and Howie Roseman decided, you know what,
- 15:13Speaker 1: We're going to give Jalen Carter that extension right now,
- 15:18Speaker 1: four years, one hundred and fifty two million dollars going
- 15:22Speaker 1: to keep him in Philadelphia through the two thousand and
- 15:24Speaker 1: thirty one season. An average annual value of about thirty
- 15:28Speaker 1: eight million dollars per season makes him the highest paid
- 15:31Speaker 1: defensive tackle in NFL history, passing Tennessee Titans Jeffrey Simmons,
- 15:37Speaker 1: who signed his three year deal of one hundred and
- 15:40Speaker 1: five point eight million.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Dollars back in June.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Of course, in my opinion, this is great news, not
- 15:47Speaker 1: just because I have a Jalen Carter jersey, but what
- 15:50Speaker 1: this does for this defense. It's looking towards the future.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Jalen Carter. We know what he did in the Super Bowl,
- 15:57Speaker 1: we know what his dominance was two years ago. Last
- 16:00Speaker 1: year a bit of an outlier, it seems for him,
- 16:03Speaker 1: due to some injury issues, of course, But Philadelphia Eagles
- 16:06Speaker 1: in the front office, Howie Roseman, they are betting on
- 16:09Speaker 1: Jalen Carter to take this defense to another level. Erica,
- 16:15Speaker 1: of course, I was so glad that this got done again,
- 16:17Speaker 1: not just because I have a Jaalen Carter jersey, but
- 16:19Speaker 1: because of what he does for that defensive line, a
- 16:23Speaker 1: defensive line that we now have some questions about in
- 16:26Speaker 1: terms of pass rush.
- 16:27Speaker 3: But he's the guy.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And if you listen to the podcast last week, folks,
- 16:31Speaker 1: we had Johnny Page from Bleeding Green Nation dot com
- 16:34Speaker 1: the Eagles Pinpool podcast network on and he.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Said, you know that, and he was right.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Jalen Carter is the foundational piece of what the pass
- 16:42Speaker 1: rush is going to be and how successful it's going
- 16:44Speaker 1: to be this season.
- 16:45Speaker 3: This was great news all around.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Man. Yeah, how he's a smart guy.
- 16:49Speaker 4: In the smart move he was to sign probably the
- 16:53Speaker 4: second or third best tackle in football, young and talented
- 16:56Speaker 4: enough to become the best tackle in football, I would say,
- 17:00Speaker 4: and him, he's he's he's Jerome Brown. He's the next
- 17:03Speaker 4: Jerome Brown. Like they've They've had some great tackles in
- 17:06Speaker 4: in Eagles history, Fletcher Cox.
- 17:09Speaker 2: If you remember chew Q.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Johnson from the late seventies early eighties on the Super
- 17:12Speaker 4: Bowl teams, and uh, Corey Simon had a great run.
- 17:15Speaker 4: But I think this guy's more talented than all of them.
- 17:18Speaker 4: And well, maybe not Jerome Brown because he died so young.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yea, can we.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Please keep uh, can we please keep Carter from like
- 17:26Speaker 4: racing cars and shit college?
- 17:28Speaker 3: Make good decisions, make good decisions, jailing, yes.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Please, but not just that, not just his talent alone.
- 17:35Speaker 4: He sets he just sets the tone for that defense,
- 17:38Speaker 4: and he sets the tone for the entire team. I
- 17:40Speaker 4: know the offensive line is nasty and Landon Dickerson could
- 17:43Speaker 4: be a prick, but this guy, I mean, this guy,
- 17:46Speaker 4: he I mean he's spitting Dak Prescott's face a cowboy,
- 17:50Speaker 4: and whether you want to say Dak spit first, it
- 17:54Speaker 4: doesn't matter.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But he doesn't like the Cowboys.
- 17:56Speaker 4: He doesn't like anybody on the field that is playing
- 17:59Speaker 4: against the Eagles, and he's a tone setter, and you
- 18:04Speaker 4: have to have those guys if you want to you
- 18:06Speaker 4: want to compete in the NFL.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He's he's the guy like and not to.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I think his signing also has been I'll say the
- 18:14Speaker 4: signing of him and the exit of AJ Brown.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You want to talk about vibes. I don't know if you've.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Been watching interviews in camp yet or some of the
- 18:23Speaker 4: footage on the field, This whole team's vibe is different
- 18:26Speaker 4: than last year.
- 18:27Speaker 3: It is.
- 18:27Speaker 2: It's night and day.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Perfect transition, dude, perfect transition. Let's get just get into
- 18:32Speaker 1: the Eagles training camp. They're in full go mode at
- 18:35Speaker 1: this point. Like you said, the vibes are just absolutely
- 18:38Speaker 1: incredible here. And it's is it the AJ Brown aspect
- 18:44Speaker 1: of it, Yes, it is absolutely there. But I think
- 18:47Speaker 1: it's also the fact that you have a lot of
- 18:49Speaker 1: maturity coming from whether it's the quarterback position. You have
- 18:54Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley, who is an absolute stud of an NFL player,
- 18:58Speaker 1: one of the greatest to ever play the running back position.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You now have a healthy offensive line, wide receivers that
- 19:05Speaker 1: are doing some pretty incredible things in training camp thus far.
- 19:08Speaker 1: And on the defensive side of the ball. Yes, it's
- 19:10Speaker 1: disappointing that Jonathan Gernard is going to be missing just
- 19:14Speaker 1: about all of training camp, and Vic Fangio has said
- 19:17Speaker 1: he is not going to be cross training and we're
- 19:20Speaker 1: just gonna he's gonna keep him at the linebacker position,
- 19:22Speaker 1: inside linebacker position, not gonna be an edge rusher. That's
- 19:26Speaker 1: all fine and well, but you have now because of
- 19:29Speaker 1: the Jalen Carter extension that being over. Now, now it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: the it's it's it's who's going to be signed next,
- 19:35Speaker 1: Who's going to get those next extension. It's gonna be
- 19:37Speaker 1: Quinnon Mitchell, of course, it's gonna be Cooper dejen and
- 19:40Speaker 1: then these vibes of where the defense now is going
- 19:44Speaker 1: to be going this season. It is such a high
- 19:50Speaker 1: to get these these reports that we're getting every now
- 19:53Speaker 1: and again, whether you're watching Instagram or whether you're on
- 19:57Speaker 1: on Twitter and you're seeing where the team is at
- 20:00Speaker 1: and the highlights that are shown and just the cohesiveness
- 20:06Speaker 1: that you're talking about there, Eric, there's just these vibes
- 20:08Speaker 1: that are different this year, and it looks like it
- 20:11Speaker 1: seems like a more mature type of team this year
- 20:14Speaker 1: that is really looking to hone in on their best
- 20:19Speaker 1: skilled players as they usually do, but how there's just
- 20:23Speaker 1: more cohesiveness, it seems this year. And that that's these
- 20:26Speaker 1: vibes that I'm getting.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I I'd never delve too far into aj brown
- 20:33Speaker 4: saga with the Eagles near the end a little bit.
- 20:37Speaker 4: And you know, he did come out looking like an asshole.
- 20:40Speaker 4: You know, let let's just say it.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Because I mean, he's the only he's the only thing
- 20:47Speaker 4: that's different so far this early in the season. And
- 20:51Speaker 4: like I said, the vibes seem really well. Jalen Hurts
- 20:54Speaker 4: all of a sudden has a personality. I don't know
- 20:59Speaker 4: what happened, but you know, he gave he put he
- 21:02Speaker 4: gave five bucks to Jalen. Carter was like, here, put more,
- 21:05Speaker 4: put five on it. Yes, there's an extra five. I
- 21:08Speaker 4: don't think I've ever seen him do that kind of stuff.
- 21:11Speaker 4: He's maybe he's coming out of being a quiet leader
- 21:14Speaker 4: and he's going to be a little more vocal.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And you know when they won, when they won.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Two years ago the Super Bowl, they caught fire and
- 21:21Speaker 4: they were the best team in the NFL by the
- 21:23Speaker 4: end of the year, right, But you know that was
- 21:26Speaker 4: it was still a really young team. I mean, Mike God,
- 21:28Speaker 4: they had two rookies at cornerback basically or not basically,
- 21:32Speaker 4: and like now they're now, they're now they're veterans, right,
- 21:37Speaker 4: you know, And it was maybe it was good to
- 21:38Speaker 4: get that bad season out of the way last this
- 21:41Speaker 4: past year, because you know, there's always hangover seasons for
- 21:46Speaker 4: Super Bowl teams typically. Yeah, and you know, they they
- 21:50Speaker 4: got out of theirs unscathed pretty much. Uh, they got
- 21:53Speaker 4: rid of a j Brown who seemed to be kind
- 21:55Speaker 4: of the only issue on on on within the team.
- 21:58Speaker 4: And now they're a little more mature, they're a little
- 22:01Speaker 4: older and there I think on paper, they're actually more
- 22:05Speaker 4: talented than they were two years ago. I mean it
- 22:09Speaker 4: they have two what top eight cornerbacks yeah, yeah in
- 22:12Speaker 4: the league.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and the fact that Rik wooland I am absolutely
- 22:16Speaker 1: high on him.
- 22:17Speaker 4: I was just going to mention him, he's their third cornerback. Yeah,
- 22:20Speaker 4: he just won a Super Bowl for guys. Yeah, They
- 22:22Speaker 4: have Andrew mccouba, who's probably top thirty you know back
- 22:26Speaker 4: or you know, defensive backfield kind of player. And I
- 22:30Speaker 4: mean they had Jihad Campbell Bond not to mention what
- 22:34Speaker 4: they have to top ten tackles yeah, I mean, the
- 22:37Speaker 4: only the only part of the defense I'm a little
- 22:40Speaker 4: concerned about is defensive edge rush. But you know, they
- 22:43Speaker 4: picked up the kid from the Vikings, like you talked about,
- 22:45Speaker 4: and offensively, I've heard a lot of you know, Blg's been.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Tweeting about it a lot, a.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Lot more quicker passes over the middle, Yes, not as
- 22:56Speaker 4: much stuff outside. Yes, he's utilizing all of his weapons.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Mkay lemon.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Apparently it looks fast as hell, which which feels really good.
- 23:05Speaker 4: I've long thought DeVante could be a one and now
- 23:07Speaker 4: he is. Yea and man, I've even heard some good
- 23:11Speaker 4: things about the tight end they drafted, so like, they
- 23:14Speaker 4: have weapons. If the offensive line can stay healthy, that's
- 23:17Speaker 4: always a big.
- 23:17Speaker 3: If that's the key, man, that's the key.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Because look, i mean one of the biggest stories in
- 23:21Speaker 1: training camp is always you know, who's in, who's out?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Injury bug all of that, and considering what Cam Jurgens
- 23:28Speaker 1: and Land and Dickerson have been through the last couple
- 23:30Speaker 1: of years and the questions they face coming into this
- 23:33Speaker 1: training camp, I mean, it's so encouraging to know that.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I mean, the injuries, the very serious injuries during the
- 23:40Speaker 1: twenty twenty four Super Bowl run and then last year
- 23:43Speaker 1: with Cam Jurgens missing three games with a knee injury,
- 23:46Speaker 1: dealing with lingering back pain as well Landon Dickerson out
- 23:50Speaker 1: with it was out with a torn meniscus at this
- 23:53Speaker 1: point last year had to be scoped, and then ankle
- 23:57Speaker 1: injuries throughout the season. The fact that these guys went
- 24:00Speaker 1: through stem cell treatments during the offseason to try to
- 24:03Speaker 1: get healthy enough to regain that elite form that they've
- 24:05Speaker 1: had and their full go here at training camp and
- 24:09Speaker 1: at this point they are looking fine. They are looking good.
- 24:13Speaker 1: They are the keys to the offensive success in my mind. Yes,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Jalen Hurt's absolutely critical Saquon Barkley, Dallas Godd or Eli
- 24:21Speaker 1: Stowers once he starts getting into the fold as a rookie.
- 24:23Speaker 1: But we've got incredibly talented tackles in Lane Johnson and
- 24:27Speaker 1: Jordan Mylatta.
- 24:28Speaker 3: But man, Cam Jurigens and Landon Dickerson.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Their health, it's so super important that they remain healthy
- 24:36Speaker 1: for this offense to be as successful as I know
- 24:38Speaker 1: that it can be, and the Eagles nation knows that
- 24:40Speaker 1: it can be as well.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the last two Super Bowls they won
- 24:44Speaker 4: the offensive line was just decimating the other defensive defensive lines,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and that is obviously the key. You know, I talked
- 24:52Speaker 4: about defensive edge rush, but the offensive line if they
- 24:55Speaker 4: can stay healthy. I mean, Lane Johnson is slowly becoming
- 24:59Speaker 4: the li On James at the NFL. Like he's he's
- 25:02Speaker 4: just been doing this for how long now? I mean,
- 25:05Speaker 4: and I read some ridiculous statute I don't have in
- 25:07Speaker 4: front of me, but like he's only given up like
- 25:10Speaker 4: ten sacks in some absurd amount of snaps or something
- 25:14Speaker 4: in about ten years, like ten years, Like that's crazy.
- 25:19Speaker 4: And the good the good thing is he's bookended by
- 25:22Speaker 4: probably the best tackle in football right now. So the
- 25:25Speaker 4: talents there, I mean, just just roster wise, I think
- 25:29Speaker 4: this roster is not just more talented, it's just more
- 25:32Speaker 4: versatile because there's so many good young players. But they
- 25:36Speaker 4: also have the veterans in place, and those guys that
- 25:38Speaker 4: made those huge plays in the last Super Bowl are
- 25:41Speaker 4: now three years into the league and now they know
- 25:44Speaker 4: the expectations and this just feels like it feels like
- 25:47Speaker 4: it's going in the right direction. I'm not, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 4: I saw I saw a small clip on ESPN of
- 25:53Speaker 4: the day you know who's going to win the who's
- 25:55Speaker 4: going to win the title? Eagles are six Ers? And
- 25:57Speaker 4: one guy said both, And I'm like, all right, let's
- 25:58Speaker 4: all slow.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm down here, Calm down, pump yeah, breaks, yes.
- 26:04Speaker 4: But the fact that it's even an ESPN topic, right,
- 26:07Speaker 4: it is so interesting to me because they actually took
- 26:09Speaker 4: a break from their thirty minutes of the Cowboys News, Yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 4: to talk about the Eagles and Sixers, and they somehow
- 26:15Speaker 4: this city has vaulted into like the mainstream consciousness and
- 26:19Speaker 4: talking points, incredibles, annoying talking heads. Yeah, and I kind
- 26:23Speaker 4: of like it, yeah, because it makes the show easier
- 26:25Speaker 4: for us as your sure and you know, I know.
- 26:29Speaker 2: There's still Philly fans like whoever would hear to us.
- 26:31Speaker 4: It's like, it's okay if people start to like us, Yeah,
- 26:34Speaker 4: it's okay, okay.
- 26:35Speaker 3: It's all right.
- 26:36Speaker 1: I don't mind it. I don't mind it at all.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Oh gosh, well, let us know what you're thinking here
- 26:41Speaker 1: on YouTube. Believe it's a comment below on this Philadelphia
- 26:43Speaker 1: Eagles team training camp. The various storylines we'd love to
- 26:47Speaker 1: hear from you, and we are going to take a
- 26:48Speaker 1: break and we get back and talk about Bryce Harper
- 26:51Speaker 1: don maddingly.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Oh boy, what's going on with this Phillies team? Stick
- 26:55Speaker 3: with us. The Philadelphia phil are floundering in a number.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Of ways, not just on the field, but behind the
- 27:06Speaker 1: scenes as well. As we know this past week, a
- 27:09Speaker 1: public rift has really made its way into all of
- 27:13Speaker 1: our feeds and into unfortunately, what this Philadelphia Philly season
- 27:19Speaker 1: has become. Of course, Bryce Harper being interviewed this past
- 27:22Speaker 1: week and saying that the team is going to need
- 27:26Speaker 1: to get some help, and Dave Dombrowski essentially being you know,
- 27:31Speaker 1: put under a put under a microscope because of he's
- 27:34Speaker 1: always under a microscope. But that rift that was probably
- 27:39Speaker 1: still there from the off season this past year and
- 27:44Speaker 1: what's happening with the Phillies now that they are floundering. Look,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Bryce Harper wasn't wrong in terms of what he said.
- 27:51Speaker 1: The Phillies do need help, Like he said, they need
- 27:54Speaker 1: an effective right hand bat. And we're going to be
- 27:57Speaker 1: getting into this with our discussion with Destiny Legardo from
- 27:59Speaker 1: Phillies Nation dot Com in a bit. They've needed a
- 28:03Speaker 1: right handed and left handed reliever and they probably need
- 28:07Speaker 1: one more starting pitcher as well. Yes, Bryce Harper was
- 28:10Speaker 1: absolutely correct when he said that this team needs help.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Did he have to do this in the way that
- 28:15Speaker 1: he went about it. He was actually asked whether or
- 28:20Speaker 1: not the Phillies are going to get that help, and
- 28:22Speaker 1: he said, well, we'll see, that's a Dave question, meaning
- 28:25Speaker 1: Dave Dombrowski of course. And look, Bryce Harper, he hasn't
- 28:29Speaker 1: been doing all that great during this stretch, and it's
- 28:33Speaker 1: leading Don Mattingly now to essentially come to the defense
- 28:37Speaker 1: of the front office. And he was jabbing and poking
- 28:41Speaker 1: at Bryce Harper as well, which leads me to the
- 28:44Speaker 1: fact that Eric this riff that we are seeing between
- 28:48Speaker 1: Bryce Harper and Don Mattingley here leads me to believe
- 28:51Speaker 1: Maddingly's probably not going to be around maybe after this season,
- 28:54Speaker 1: He's probably not going to be here for the long haul.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And it also leads me to believe that I think
- 29:00Speaker 1: this Phillies team and the season and the whole window
- 29:02Speaker 1: that we were talking about is just closed here at
- 29:05Speaker 1: this point. As disappointing as it is for me to
- 29:07Speaker 1: say that and to come to that realization, this team
- 29:10Speaker 1: ain't going to the World Series, This team is not
- 29:12Speaker 1: going to the NL Championship Series. This year, because when
- 29:15Speaker 1: you have the infighting and the rift going on behind
- 29:18Speaker 1: the scenes, you're not gonna have positive productivity and playmaking
- 29:24Speaker 1: that's needed on the field. You're not gonna have good
- 29:26Speaker 1: at bats, You're not gonna have consistency because you're dealing
- 29:30Speaker 1: with the bullshit behind the scenes. And I've kind of
- 29:32Speaker 1: just relegated myself to the fact that now this isn't
- 29:36Speaker 1: gonna be the year that we're really gonna get excitement
- 29:38Speaker 1: from this team in the postseason. It's happening here at
- 29:41Speaker 1: the end of July as we're heading into August. That
- 29:43Speaker 1: realization for me. I don't know, I could be wrong.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'm usually the optimistic one on this podcast platform here,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but that's where I'm at right now with this whole
- 29:51Speaker 1: Bryce Harper, Don Mattingley, Dave Dombrowski, thing man, what are
- 29:55Speaker 1: your thoughts here with this storyline?
- 29:57Speaker 4: Now, I'm gonna go Negadelphia here, Yeah, yeah, I'm going
- 30:01Speaker 4: back the old days. Fuck this team right now. You
- 30:05Speaker 4: talked about having bad at bets because of the vibes.
- 30:07Speaker 4: This is a vibe show. Apparently they're not having bad
- 30:11Speaker 4: at bets because the vibes. It's because they suck. I
- 30:13Speaker 4: mean Alec Baum, Bryce and Stott are bums. Let's just
- 30:18Speaker 4: let's just lay it out there. Come on, like they're
- 30:21Speaker 4: just not the guys. And when when they were surrounded
- 30:25Speaker 4: by guys like in their prime, like Schwarber and Harper,
- 30:29Speaker 4: you know, like twenty twenty two, some of their some
- 30:33Speaker 4: of their some of their just like some of their negatives,
- 30:36Speaker 4: you know, we kind of ignored. And now when they're
- 30:39Speaker 4: expected to perform, they're just not. They're just not very
- 30:43Speaker 4: good baseball players like that. I don't they need so
- 30:48Speaker 4: much help. It's it's not even fine. I agree with
- 30:49Speaker 4: Bryce Harper, Yeah you need help, but you're not helping
- 30:52Speaker 4: yourself either.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and neither is your neither are your teammates.
- 30:57Speaker 4: We talked about the pitching real quick that you know
- 30:59Speaker 4: when when the darting with the big three don't start.
- 31:01Speaker 4: This team's fourteen and thirty four and there's just no
- 31:06Speaker 4: depth at starting pitcher. And Andrew Painter was a complete bust.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Andrew no or Aaron Nola. Since he signed the deal,
- 31:12Speaker 4: his deal has just been awful and the bullpen has
- 31:16Speaker 4: been pretty shitty, and you're not hitting it just it
- 31:19Speaker 4: just reeks of an old Rickety team. When the because
- 31:24Speaker 4: when your aces don't play, you have no chance. And
- 31:28Speaker 4: you saw that in the Marlins series. Oh hell they
- 31:31Speaker 4: actually they're big three started in the Marlin series, I'm wrong,
- 31:34Speaker 4: and they lost all three games.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Swept by the Marlins, for God's sake.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Swept by the Marlins who were like on a twelve
- 31:40Speaker 4: game skid at that point. So things are things are
- 31:43Speaker 4: really bad. And the negadelphia in me is like, if
- 31:47Speaker 4: you don't go all in this year, because this is
- 31:50Speaker 4: your window, this is it, it might be shut. Like
- 31:52Speaker 4: you said, Jeff, I kind of lean that way as well. Yeah,
- 31:56Speaker 4: but if it's just if it's crack at this point,
- 32:01Speaker 4: Dombrowski has to go all in. Like this team is
- 32:04Speaker 4: old that I don't see much of a future at
- 32:08Speaker 4: this point because the young players are just not performing
- 32:10Speaker 4: like once once Harper walks away whatever, Like this is
- 32:13Speaker 4: pretty much it. And the trade market is brewing. No
- 32:17Speaker 4: big trades have really happened, so it's still kind of
- 32:19Speaker 4: an open, open market. If you don't go out, all
- 32:22Speaker 4: out and get don't don't give me what was the
- 32:25Speaker 4: term you used, A reliable bat? Yeah, that does nothing
- 32:29Speaker 4: for me. Reliable bat is like a picture that pitches
- 32:33Speaker 4: to contact. Remember that old term in the two thousands
- 32:35Speaker 4: that announcers would use all that met was the guy
- 32:38Speaker 4: gives up home runs, right right, that's all. That's what
- 32:41Speaker 4: a reliable bat is to me. No, you need to
- 32:43Speaker 4: go get like a Byron Buckston. You need to go
- 32:46Speaker 4: get like a Kevin Gossman from the Blue Jays as
- 32:48Speaker 4: a pitcher or Joe Ryan from the Twins, like you
- 32:51Speaker 4: need to make a splash. You're you've proven that your
- 32:54Speaker 4: farm system sucks balls from Stott to Painter and Bomb,
- 32:59Speaker 4: and you know some of the young guys haven't had
- 33:02Speaker 4: a chance to perform yet. I don't care about them
- 33:07Speaker 4: at this point. You know, I love minor league talk,
- 33:09Speaker 4: and what did Ada Millindery yesterday? I don't care, Like, yeah,
- 33:14Speaker 4: I want those guys gone to build, to give this
- 33:16Speaker 4: team one more shot, because this this feels like it's it.
- 33:21Speaker 2: And I want to pose a question to you quick.
- 33:22Speaker 4: You talked about Maddingly chiming in on this and not
- 33:26Speaker 4: being here for long. Do you think he do you
- 33:29Speaker 4: think he's going at Harper because he's trying to get
- 33:33Speaker 4: on Don Browski's good side to get a contract.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I think that could yeah, because he's not.
- 33:38Speaker 4: Going after real mood to Schwarberg, He's going after the
- 33:41Speaker 4: guy that Don Browski targeted and seems to be kind
- 33:43Speaker 4: of the villain internally within the Phillies. Yeah, I feel
- 33:46Speaker 4: like he's doing that to maybe foster you know, goodwill
- 33:50Speaker 4: with the GM.
- 33:52Speaker 3: I think so too.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Look, we know in sports, just like in the professional world,
- 33:57Speaker 1: the corporate world, even with dealing with public service, there's
- 34:01Speaker 1: a political aspect of everything. Unfortunately, in life, guys want
- 34:06Speaker 1: to hold onto their jobs. Don Mattingly wants to hold
- 34:09Speaker 1: onto that job as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies because
- 34:13Speaker 1: right now, look the Phillies has of us recording this
- 34:15Speaker 1: are fifty seven and fifty two, I believe, still holding
- 34:19Speaker 1: the second NL wildcard spot. And yes, while the team
- 34:22Speaker 1: does seem like it's broken right now, they're cushing in.
- 34:26Speaker 1: The wildcard race is narrowed to what half a game
- 34:30Speaker 1: above the Diamondbacks who have the third slot, and one
- 34:33Speaker 1: and a half games above the Pirates who are just
- 34:36Speaker 1: outside the bubble. So yeah, Don Mattingley's thinking this could
- 34:39Speaker 1: be it for me. I need to get on the
- 34:41Speaker 1: I need to get on Dave Dombrowski's good side. He's
- 34:44Speaker 1: the decision maker, likely still going to be the decision
- 34:46Speaker 1: maker for some time. As many people in Phillies Nation
- 34:50Speaker 1: have said, we don't want Dombrowski here making these decisions anymore.
- 34:53Speaker 3: He's still the guy.
- 34:55Speaker 1: So yeah, absolutely, Eric, I think this is Don Mattingly
- 34:58Speaker 1: having to play some politics here saying to keep my job.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah. I agree.
- 35:02Speaker 4: And and if if the slide continues and they make
- 35:05Speaker 4: kind of a paltry deal on Monday, by Monday at
- 35:08Speaker 4: six o'clock the deadline, and they go like they wind
- 35:12Speaker 4: up ten games under five hundred or whatever, you know,
- 35:15Speaker 4: he's going to take a lot of blame for it,
- 35:17Speaker 4: whether he likes it or not, because he's not you know,
- 35:21Speaker 4: the fans are not going to turn on Bryce Harper.
- 35:23Speaker 2: It's just not going to happen.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Mattingly is going to be the person that gets most
- 35:27Speaker 4: of the heat, as well as Don Browski, who, by
- 35:29Speaker 4: the way, they just extended his contract. Yes, wow, you
- 35:35Speaker 4: better make a hell of a move by Monday at
- 35:37Speaker 4: six o'clock to warrant that extension because if they come
- 35:42Speaker 4: out with some trade announcement that is just it just
- 35:46Speaker 4: leaves me flaccid. I I will I will hone in
- 35:51Speaker 4: on the Eagles and six Ers so hard and the Flyers. Honestly, yes,
- 35:56Speaker 4: and the Phillies will become the fourth most interesting team
- 36:00Speaker 4: in Philadelphia to me if you just kind of if
- 36:02Speaker 4: you make a small deal and you just keep playing
- 36:05Speaker 4: this pathetic almost five hundred baseball the rest of the
- 36:07Speaker 4: way or even below five hundred at that point. And man,
- 36:11Speaker 4: they we always have about the rankings of the teams
- 36:14Speaker 4: in the city on the show.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they could.
- 36:17Speaker 4: They could fall to four so fast that they have
- 36:20Speaker 4: three days to change the narrative.
- 36:22Speaker 1: They do in my opinion, So it's amazing, you know,
- 36:24Speaker 1: a small piece of time, a small section of time,
- 36:30Speaker 1: how important that can be for our franchise, for the
- 36:32Speaker 1: fan base and the direction of the team.
- 36:35Speaker 3: It's it's really amazing how that all works out.
- 36:38Speaker 1: So, buddy, I'm gonna let you go unless you got
- 36:40Speaker 1: any more for this Phillies talk with Bryce Harper and
- 36:43Speaker 1: Don Mattingley here and then we'll get to our interview
- 36:45Speaker 1: this week.
- 36:46Speaker 3: You got any final thoughts.
- 36:47Speaker 4: Listen, If the All Star Game in Philadelphia was the
- 36:50Speaker 4: highlight for this team this year, yeah, that's pretty fucking
- 36:54Speaker 4: sad because that happened a few weeks ago in July, so.
- 36:57Speaker 1: We were all on a high from that because of
- 36:59Speaker 1: the hype. Man, holy cow vibe good. Yes, it was
- 37:02Speaker 1: so much fun. It is keep the fun going. Dombrowski.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Please absolutely all right, folks, were gonna take a break,
- 37:08Speaker 1: we get back. Destiny Logardo from Philliesnation dot COM's going
- 37:11Speaker 1: to join us to continue talking about the challenges that
- 37:13Speaker 1: this Phillies team is having.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Stick with us.
- 37:19Speaker 5: And now on the table.
- 37:23Speaker 1: We got to get into this Philadelphia Phillies team. I
- 37:25Speaker 1: guess we have to at this point, even though they're
- 37:28Speaker 1: absolutely frustrating. We have from Phillies Nation dot com. Love
- 37:32Speaker 1: that site, have loved it for years. They're doing a
- 37:35Speaker 1: great job over there. We've got one of our good friends,
- 37:37Speaker 1: Destiny Logardo, my friend. Thank you so much for taking
- 37:40Speaker 1: the time to jump on to talk about this frustrating
- 37:42Speaker 1: Phillies team.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Thank you for having me, Jeff. It's popping a good stretch.
- 37:47Speaker 1: It hasn't with this team every year. There is always
- 37:51Speaker 1: this promise, There is always this hope, Destiny that streaks
- 37:57Speaker 1: that are good, that are productive, that we see that
- 38:00Speaker 1: promise are going to last and remain consistent. Yet for
- 38:04Speaker 1: some reason, every year they go through these slumps, certain
- 38:08Speaker 1: players will go through slumps, and yes, it is baseball,
- 38:11Speaker 1: but it just seems so incredibly frustrating, and we should
- 38:14Speaker 1: have a crystal ball at this point to say, yeah,
- 38:16Speaker 1: this is gonna happen.
- 38:17Speaker 3: This is what's gonna happen.
- 38:18Speaker 1: This is where our frustrations are going to be here
- 38:20Speaker 1: towards the end of July, as we are starting August here,
- 38:23Speaker 1: I just my hope has dwindled here. And I don't
- 38:28Speaker 1: necessarily mean to make light of it, but I feel
- 38:31Speaker 1: like I should have just seen this coming. I'm an
- 38:33Speaker 1: apologist really for the organization, for a lot of the
- 38:36Speaker 1: talent on this team. I've been an apologist just because
- 38:39Speaker 1: I'm the hopeful optimist here on this podcast platform. I
- 38:42Speaker 1: don't know, you see it all the time when you're
- 38:44Speaker 1: at Citizens Bank Park, and the way that these guys
- 38:47Speaker 1: are performing.
- 38:48Speaker 3: It's not like they don't want to play well.
- 38:49Speaker 1: It's not like they don't want to hit the ball
- 38:51Speaker 1: or pitch well from the mound. What are your overall
- 38:54Speaker 1: assessments like right now at this particular point in time.
- 38:57Speaker 3: We're recording this on the twenty ninth of July.
- 39:00Speaker 5: There's nothing wrong with being the optimist. This is definitely
- 39:05Speaker 5: the worst rut they've been in since Don Mattingly has
- 39:09Speaker 5: taken over, and I do want to acknowledge just the
- 39:13Speaker 5: pace that they've played since the managerial change has been
- 39:17Speaker 5: pretty incredible, and this is probably going to happen at
- 39:23Speaker 5: some point. I didn't think it would be as bad
- 39:25Speaker 5: as it is now. I mean, you know, the Marlins
- 39:28Speaker 5: came in twelve straight losses and then they dropped that
- 39:32Speaker 5: that first game, which that was a pretty brutal loss
- 39:35Speaker 5: up to in the ninth inning, and then another breaking heartbreak, Yeah,
- 39:39Speaker 5: another one nothing loss. I think. I remember last year
- 39:43Speaker 5: when the schedule came out and we saw, you know,
- 39:46Speaker 5: the Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees as a home stand, and
- 39:51Speaker 5: we all kind of assumed that that was going to
- 39:53Speaker 5: be a real challenge for them. Part of it was
- 39:55Speaker 5: because we thought the Mets were a legit team. Yeah
- 39:58Speaker 5: they're not, but it's it still was a pretty you know,
- 40:02Speaker 5: especially during the Dodgers series. It's evident that they are
- 40:07Speaker 5: many steps below the Dodgers, and I couldn't really say
- 40:11Speaker 5: that last year. I think they were the Dodgers were better,
- 40:14Speaker 5: but they were more competitive against them. So yeah, I mean,
- 40:20Speaker 5: they got good pitching last night, but the Bats are
- 40:22Speaker 5: really struggling. It's everything is a lot more difficult when
- 40:28Speaker 5: guys like Schwarber, who he hasn't even even been in
- 40:32Speaker 5: the lineup, and Harper and now marshare all struggling. The
- 40:37Speaker 5: lack of depth is really showing. So yeah, they got
- 40:40Speaker 5: to start winning. Yeah, they got to start winning.
- 40:42Speaker 3: They do, they do.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And look, I mean, I know we're coming right out
- 40:45Speaker 1: of the gate here kind of talking about the negative
- 40:48Speaker 1: aspects of this team, but it's what's in front of us.
- 40:50Speaker 3: We have to talk about it too.
- 40:52Speaker 1: And we're certainly going to talk about some talent in
- 40:54Speaker 1: just a bit on this team and what may actually
- 40:57Speaker 1: be happening for the trade deadline. But I wanted to
- 41:01Speaker 1: actually talk about something that I thought was a little
- 41:03Speaker 1: bit bizarre this week, and you all wrote about it
- 41:06Speaker 1: over at Phillies Nation dot com. Alecbaum entering the Philadelphia
- 41:12Speaker 1: Phillies' history books.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Now what do we mean by this, folks?
- 41:15Speaker 1: In case you didn't know, he actually passed Chase Utley
- 41:18Speaker 1: in a particular stat which which is again just so bizarre.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Alec Bohm Now has six bases loaded hit by pitches
- 41:27Speaker 1: and Utley only has had five. So this is a
- 41:31Speaker 1: record that has been broken here. I don't know if
- 41:33Speaker 1: we want to call this bizarre, weird or whatever, but
- 41:36Speaker 1: it's always interesting when a current Phillies player passes an
- 41:40Speaker 1: icon with a specific stat in the end at the
- 41:43Speaker 1: end of the day.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Does it really mean anything?
- 41:45Speaker 1: Probably not, But what are your thoughts on this one,
- 41:48Speaker 1: because it's not like it's not like Alec Bohm was
- 41:50Speaker 1: like crowding the plate or anything. But again, a stat
- 41:54Speaker 1: at the end of the day doesn't mean too too much,
- 41:56Speaker 1: but at least it's something for us to say, Hey,
- 41:58Speaker 1: he's in the record books now he had.
- 42:01Speaker 5: It's strange. I like all these like very particular stats
- 42:05Speaker 5: and records. I think it happens a lot because one
- 42:10Speaker 5: like Boom is frequently hitting in the middle of the lineup,
- 42:14Speaker 5: so he is getting those runners and scoring position opportunities
- 42:17Speaker 5: and he has come through with them.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:21Speaker 5: Also, Bom is like one of those guys that pitchers
- 42:25Speaker 5: try very hard to, you know, get out by pitching
- 42:28Speaker 5: him and the inside part of the plate, just because
- 42:32Speaker 5: he does swing a lot and he does roll over
- 42:36Speaker 5: a lot. So that's always the best kind of plan
- 42:40Speaker 5: against him. It's just funny that it's happened this often
- 42:44Speaker 5: with the bases loaded, So it's like, it's a cool
- 42:48Speaker 5: stat I'm not too surprised, just because I've seen so
- 42:51Speaker 5: much about Boom over the years and the way they
- 42:54Speaker 5: try to pitch him and his aggression and the amount
- 43:00Speaker 5: of times that he would roll over to short stop.
- 43:02Speaker 5: So yeah, yeah's it's a cool record. Like I you know,
- 43:07Speaker 5: Chase Elly was my favorite player growing up, and it
- 43:10Speaker 5: was always like, I just I love seeing him like
- 43:13Speaker 5: get hit by a pitch. It kind of just like
- 43:15Speaker 5: brush it off and you know, move his hip a
- 43:17Speaker 5: little bit and just go to first base and kind
- 43:19Speaker 5: of put his head down.
- 43:20Speaker 1: So absolutely, yeah, absolutely, I h you know, just getting
- 43:25Speaker 1: back to what we were talking about, the frustrating aspects
- 43:28Speaker 1: of this team and knowing what this team is going
- 43:31Speaker 1: to need with the trade deadline coming and the pieces
- 43:37Speaker 1: that if they really want to compete in the postseason
- 43:39Speaker 1: that they're gonna need to acquire if they can, you know,
- 43:44Speaker 1: I think a lot of us think that this is
- 43:46Speaker 1: a team that can get to the postseason, whether it's
- 43:48Speaker 1: a wild card, whether or not they are able to
- 43:50Speaker 1: catch up to the Braves. That remains to be seen
- 43:53Speaker 1: in the Enda East. This bullpen of soul frustrating to watch.
- 43:57Speaker 1: We know they need a right handed bat. For the
- 43:59Speaker 1: love of all that is good and holly in the
- 44:02Speaker 1: game of baseball at Destiny, How does Dave Dombrowski get
- 44:06Speaker 1: this done with a farm system that isn't the most
- 44:09Speaker 1: special in the game of baseball here?
- 44:11Speaker 3: I mean, they're in a real pickle here at the
- 44:14Speaker 3: end of the day.
- 44:16Speaker 5: Yeah, the answer to that is, I don't know, just because,
- 44:21Speaker 5: like we've talked about before, there are so many holes
- 44:24Speaker 5: on this roster, and I don't think the trade deadline
- 44:28Speaker 5: is solving everything. Even if in the best case scenario
- 44:33Speaker 5: they get a starting pitcher, they get a high leverage reliever,
- 44:36Speaker 5: and they get a outfield bad like, I still think
- 44:40Speaker 5: there are holes on this roster, and I do think
- 44:45Speaker 5: the farm system just not having as much depth is
- 44:48Speaker 5: going to be a problem. I think it's going to
- 44:50Speaker 5: be more of a problem when it comes to you know,
- 44:53Speaker 5: if the Phillies wanted to compete with the Dodgers or
- 44:55Speaker 5: the Brewers or the Rays with acquiring a star player.
- 44:59Speaker 5: I don't know if Trek Scooble is a realistic option,
- 45:01Speaker 5: but I don't think they have the young talent to
- 45:05Speaker 5: compete with those teams when it comes to getting star players.
- 45:09Speaker 5: But you know, I don't know if this will make
- 45:11Speaker 5: you feel any better, but the trade deadline has changed
- 45:15Speaker 5: a lot over the last few years with the expansion
- 45:19Speaker 5: of the playoffs. There are so many teams at this
- 45:22Speaker 5: time of year that are still alive in the playoff
- 45:25Speaker 5: race and not a lot of sellers. So you know,
- 45:28Speaker 5: in a world where the Phillies had a lot of
- 45:30Speaker 5: holes but a lot of talent in the minor league
- 45:33Speaker 5: system to fill those holes, I still don't think there's
- 45:37Speaker 5: enough to get there's there's not enough talent to fill
- 45:41Speaker 5: all those holes just because there's so few sellers and
- 45:43Speaker 5: so little supply in the market. So you know, I
- 45:47Speaker 5: feel like every year and sometimes it works out like
- 45:50Speaker 5: last year, like the trade deadline with Dron and Bader,
- 45:53Speaker 5: like really I believe transformed this team, Like there was
- 45:56Speaker 5: a different energy after the trade deadline last year played
- 46:00Speaker 5: really well. That's not always going to happen, and we
- 46:04Speaker 5: kind of look at the trade deadline as a time
- 46:06Speaker 5: where dramatic changes can be made, and I do think
- 46:10Speaker 5: they could get some meaningful you know, meaningful arms and
- 46:14Speaker 5: meaningful bat at the trade deadline, but I'm not necessarily
- 46:17Speaker 5: counting on it.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And I wonder about the narrative that and it's
- 46:22Speaker 1: out there, the narrative of moving Bryce Harper back to
- 46:25Speaker 1: the outfield, they could potentially acquire first baseman. What are
- 46:30Speaker 1: your thoughts on that particular narrative as well? And look,
- 46:34Speaker 1: we know Bryce Harper just recently said, you know, he
- 46:36Speaker 1: admits this team needs some help.
- 46:39Speaker 3: I mean that's what that's what he said.
- 46:41Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on that narrative moving him back
- 46:43Speaker 1: to the outfield, possibly acquiring a first baseman to give
- 46:45Speaker 1: some help with the some right handed batting.
- 46:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean we've heard about this for years, Bryce
- 46:51Speaker 5: willing to go to the outfield, and I don't think
- 46:53Speaker 5: it's a realistic long term solution to look at, Bryce's
- 46:57Speaker 5: an outfielder, But if you got to put him there
- 47:00Speaker 5: for a couple of months, then I think that's something
- 47:03Speaker 5: that everybody could kind of swallow. Here. The difference this
- 47:08Speaker 5: year is Bryce in you know, twenty four twenty five
- 47:14Speaker 5: was a very good defensive first baseman. This year, that
- 47:18Speaker 5: is not the case at all. And you know, we
- 47:22Speaker 5: talked about the Phillies needing a pitcher, maybe a couple
- 47:24Speaker 5: of pitchers, and nowtfield bad. They badly need a better
- 47:28Speaker 5: infield defense, and that is a lot harder to augment
- 47:32Speaker 5: just because they have Harper and Turner on big contracts,
- 47:36Speaker 5: Like those guys aren't going to get moved. So you know,
- 47:40Speaker 5: Bryce is willing to move to the outfield for a
- 47:42Speaker 5: meaningful offensive upgrade, but I also think Bryce should be
- 47:47Speaker 5: willing to move to the outfield as a way to
- 47:51Speaker 5: improve the defense. If that makes sense. Yeah, it's you know,
- 47:56Speaker 5: with Turner, like we see the errors and the mental
- 47:59Speaker 5: mistakes every day, but Bryce's mistakes are kind of harder
- 48:03Speaker 5: to pinpoint on a daily basis because it's the dive
- 48:06Speaker 5: that he doesn't make, or the lack of range or
- 48:09Speaker 5: he misreads a ball. But his first base defense has
- 48:13Speaker 5: been brutal this year.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Yeah, not right at all.
- 48:17Speaker 5: I don't know if it'll be much better in the outfield, honestly,
- 48:20Speaker 5: but rightfield maybe it might be a place where you
- 48:22Speaker 5: could hide him. It's just like what they rely so
- 48:26Speaker 5: much on their pitching and that's what's going to get
- 48:28Speaker 5: them to October that's what's going to get them to
- 48:31Speaker 5: the World Series. They need better defense, and part of
- 48:35Speaker 5: the solution is Bryce moving off the position, and I
- 48:40Speaker 5: think that's something that all parties should consider.
- 48:43Speaker 1: We talked last week on the podcast about the trade
- 48:45Speaker 1: turner conundrum. Batting Well defense absolutely horrendous, and might he
- 48:51Speaker 1: be a candidate to move to the outfield as well.
- 48:54Speaker 1: I mean we've talked about that on this podcast platform,
- 48:57Speaker 1: and that's certainly a narrative within Philly's nation as well.
- 49:01Speaker 3: But you do that who takes the spot? Is there?
- 49:04Speaker 1: If they decide to do that, Is there a shortstop
- 49:06Speaker 1: candidate that they could bring in at the trade deadline?
- 49:09Speaker 1: I mean, Destiny, are there certain players that you like
- 49:12Speaker 1: that you think Dave Dombrowski could actually bring in with
- 49:15Speaker 1: with regard to a particular a certain scenario here, anybody
- 49:19Speaker 1: in mind?
- 49:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean as far as the infield goes, it's
- 49:24Speaker 5: a little bit tough just because there's there's not a
- 49:27Speaker 5: lot of bats available. I was listening to Jeff Passons
- 49:30Speaker 5: podcast yesterday and he did float zach Netto as a,
- 49:34Speaker 5: you know, a potential fit for the Phillies, Like he's
- 49:36Speaker 5: a pretty good player. There'll be a lot of teams
- 49:39Speaker 5: in on him, and teams that you know, have a
- 49:42Speaker 5: better farm system that could put together a better package.
- 49:45Speaker 5: But he's a guy that if you get him, like
- 49:47Speaker 5: you put him at shortstop and then you have to
- 49:50Speaker 5: do a little bit of shuffling around that. And you
- 49:52Speaker 5: know I'm talking about like Harper is a guy that
- 49:55Speaker 5: can move to the outfield. Turner, I think that's more
- 49:58Speaker 5: of a center field thing. Yeah, I don't think you
- 50:00Speaker 5: could do both of them moving at the same time.
- 50:03Speaker 5: It'll be a little bit crazy, but yeah, yeah, it'll
- 50:08Speaker 5: be shocking. But like he's been so bad in the
- 50:11Speaker 5: outfield that you can't just hand wave away what's going
- 50:15Speaker 5: on and not even consider moving him. He has played
- 50:19Speaker 5: center field in the past. Like I I don't know
- 50:22Speaker 5: what it would look like now, I'd be willing to
- 50:26Speaker 5: try second base, Like maybe that takes a little bit
- 50:32Speaker 5: of pressure off of him. Then again, like it doesn't,
- 50:35Speaker 5: like you can't He'll still make some mistakes at second
- 50:38Speaker 5: base that he will at shortstop. So you don't know
- 50:41Speaker 5: if that's that's an upgrade if you just move him
- 50:43Speaker 5: to second base. But yeah, the trade turner, the defensive
- 50:49Speaker 5: problems are it's crazy.
- 50:52Speaker 3: It's crazy, but I know.
- 50:55Speaker 5: You you you asked about, like, you know, potential guys
- 50:58Speaker 5: outside of in field bats. Yeah, it's hard to kind
- 51:05Speaker 5: of think of who would be available. You know, Mason
- 51:07Speaker 5: Miller has always been my white whale. He's qualifies as
- 51:11Speaker 5: one of those stars that's that would be difficult for
- 51:14Speaker 5: the Phillies to get. I have no idea if he'll
- 51:17Speaker 5: be traded. I think it would be kind of crazy
- 51:19Speaker 5: if he has traded, because he has so much team
- 51:21Speaker 5: control and it really it took an incredible offer to
- 51:25Speaker 5: for the Padres to get him away from the A's.
- 51:29Speaker 5: But you know, I'd put him in the eighth inning,
- 51:33Speaker 5: I'd put him in any leverage spot. I'd feel very
- 51:37Speaker 5: good about the bullpen if you have Mason, Millard and
- 51:41Speaker 5: Deron together. Yeah, and then there's other options too. Yeah,
- 51:49Speaker 5: I'm thinking about the Padres. I don't I don't know,
- 51:53Speaker 5: you know, if they're gonna sell or buy. But I
- 51:56Speaker 5: think the Phillies also badly need more left handed relievers,
- 52:01Speaker 5: and they need a really good leverage guy, and the
- 52:03Speaker 5: Padres have one, and Adrian moorehone. He's a rental. Then again,
- 52:09Speaker 5: like you know, with the Padres, and aj Preller. You
- 52:11Speaker 5: just don't really know what's going to happen, so I
- 52:13Speaker 5: don't even know if he's going to be traded. And
- 52:16Speaker 5: then this trade deadline, it seems like the what's inmost
- 52:22Speaker 5: supply is starting pitchers, so you know, and there's a
- 52:27Speaker 5: lot of starting pitchers that have experienced in the bullpen,
- 52:30Speaker 5: so you could use them as starters in the regular
- 52:33Speaker 5: season and then potentially move them to a relief role
- 52:37Speaker 5: later if you make it to October. You know, Clay Holmes,
- 52:42Speaker 5: Kevin Gossman, Robbie Ray, those kinds of guys that aren't
- 52:45Speaker 5: number one or two's but could be threes. Maybe they're
- 52:48Speaker 5: there fours on the Phillies, but they would help bridge
- 52:52Speaker 5: the gap between you know, Sanchez, Wheeler, Glizardo. We all
- 52:56Speaker 5: know how good of a team they are when those
- 52:58Speaker 5: three guys are on the mound and what they are
- 53:01Speaker 5: when those guys are not on the mound. So I
- 53:04Speaker 5: think getting another starting picture is going to be big
- 53:07Speaker 5: for this team. And the good news for the Phillies
- 53:09Speaker 5: is that those guys are out there.
- 53:10Speaker 3: Absolutely all right.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Well, there's a lot to think about over these next
- 53:14Speaker 1: couple of days until the trade deadline. And if you're
- 53:18Speaker 1: not following Destiny over on the interwebs there, where can
- 53:23Speaker 1: folks follow you? Of course Phillies Nation dot com. They
- 53:25Speaker 1: need to go to and read the content there. But
- 53:28Speaker 1: before we go to break, where can they follow you
- 53:30Speaker 1: on the interwebs out there, Destiny?
- 53:32Speaker 5: Yes, so on ex Destiny Underscore Legardo. I'm also on
- 53:36Speaker 5: TikTok under the same handle. I haven't been as active
- 53:39Speaker 5: as I would like to be, but hopefully I get
- 53:42Speaker 5: started on that. But most importantly read Philliesenation dot com.
- 53:46Speaker 5: We got a lot of good stuff going on, especially
- 53:49Speaker 5: now with the trade deadline coming up.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, we're going to take a break, folks,
- 53:52Speaker 1: we get back. We got more Phillies talk coming your way.
- 53:58Speaker 1: All right, we are back, and we got to get
- 54:00Speaker 1: into some of the talent on this team. And first
- 54:03Speaker 1: and foremost, with this current talent, I'd like to start
- 54:07Speaker 1: with the outfield, and specifically the center fielder in Justin Crawford.
- 54:12Speaker 1: He's currently batting two fifty five two home runs on
- 54:15Speaker 1: the season, twenty two RBIs. As we're recording this, I'm wondering, Destiny,
- 54:19Speaker 1: how do you assess Justin Crawford's first year in the
- 54:22Speaker 1: majors thus far, in center field and also in the
- 54:25Speaker 1: batter's box. What are your thoughts on what he's been
- 54:28Speaker 1: giving the team here.
- 54:29Speaker 5: Yeah, defensively, I've been pleasantly surprised by how much he's
- 54:34Speaker 5: improved in centerfield. I think if you go back to
- 54:37Speaker 5: the first month of the season, like he did not
- 54:40Speaker 5: look good as a center fielder. He was not getting
- 54:43Speaker 5: to some balls that he should have gotten to, and
- 54:46Speaker 5: I think it was getting almost to the point where
- 54:48Speaker 5: it's like can you continue keep playing him at centerfield?
- 54:53Speaker 5: And then he really improved as far as a defender
- 54:57Speaker 5: in centerfield, So too worried about him as a defender
- 55:01Speaker 5: right now in the batter's box, I would like to
- 55:05Speaker 5: see a little bit more of you know, the the
- 55:09Speaker 5: Justin Crawford and we talk about his game and it's
- 55:11Speaker 5: a lot of bunning, it's a lot of contact, it's
- 55:14Speaker 5: a lot of you know, infield hits and stealing bases.
- 55:18Speaker 5: And I think the run game has been a little
- 55:20Speaker 5: bit slow to develop, just because you know, he's trying
- 55:24Speaker 5: to get comfortable with timing up pictures, but like that
- 55:28Speaker 5: part of the game not really showing in the major
- 55:31Speaker 5: league level, especially as a guy that can't really do
- 55:34Speaker 5: damage the way he can, Like he needs to do
- 55:36Speaker 5: more of the bunning and you know, make more contact
- 55:39Speaker 5: and you know, focus on those singles. That's kind of
- 55:42Speaker 5: what we expected of Crawford when he was brought up.
- 55:46Speaker 5: So you know, like I said before, like he can't
- 55:50Speaker 5: do damage, so you can't really recover from some of
- 55:53Speaker 5: the numbers that he has put up earlier this year.
- 55:57Speaker 5: But I think we need to see a little bit
- 55:59Speaker 5: more of like the Justin Crawford that we were promised,
- 56:02Speaker 5: which is like the small ball guy. And there's been
- 56:05Speaker 5: a lot of chasing and a lot of strikeouts, and
- 56:08Speaker 5: he has been hurt by you know, major league defense
- 56:11Speaker 5: being better, so some of those ground balls that were
- 56:14Speaker 5: hits in the Marna leagues are out now.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Yeah. I again, it's his first season. He is going
- 56:20Speaker 1: to continue to develop. I have confidence in him. I
- 56:24Speaker 1: think he has a determination and a drive to get
- 56:27Speaker 1: to that next level and whatever that next level looks like.
- 56:30Speaker 1: But I want to divert now to another player on
- 56:33Speaker 1: this team, and you recently put up an article about
- 56:35Speaker 1: him on Phillies Nation dot com and it's Brandon marsh
- 56:39Speaker 1: of course, and how it looks like he's possibly going
- 56:43Speaker 1: to be platooned again. He's batting around one fifty six
- 56:47Speaker 1: here in July. I mean, he's done a complete one
- 56:49Speaker 1: to eighty at the plate. It's been a rough patch
- 56:52Speaker 1: for sure, after just dominance at the plate that led
- 56:55Speaker 1: him to the All Star Game destiny, How do you
- 56:58Speaker 1: assess what's happening Brandon marsh here and your thoughts on
- 57:02Speaker 1: whether or not he's gonna be able to get back
- 57:04Speaker 1: to some productive consistency.
- 57:08Speaker 5: I think some bad habits said he got away with
- 57:11Speaker 5: earlier in the year starting to catch up with him,
- 57:13Speaker 5: mostly talking about chasing. Now, he's a guy that you know,
- 57:18Speaker 5: he has great play discipline. We've seen that over the years,
- 57:21Speaker 5: but he could get away with some chasing just because
- 57:24Speaker 5: he's such a great contact hitter. But teams are starting
- 57:29Speaker 5: to take notice of that, and they're starting to pitch
- 57:32Speaker 5: him a lot more outside the StrEG zone and he's
- 57:35Speaker 5: getting himself out. So earlier in the year it kind
- 57:40Speaker 5: of felt like every time he swung, he was making
- 57:43Speaker 5: contact and it was a base hit, And this time
- 57:45Speaker 5: it's more he's getting himself out by striking out and
- 57:49Speaker 5: yea swinging at pitches outside of the StrEG zone. So
- 57:53Speaker 5: Brandon marsh like he's been through this before. Obviously he's
- 57:57Speaker 5: he was hitless, not this April, but last Stapril, and
- 58:02Speaker 5: it is kind of stunning, just like the fallout or
- 58:05Speaker 5: just how badly he's fallen off and how quickly the
- 58:09Speaker 5: Phillies moved off of him being an everyday player. I
- 58:12Speaker 5: know earlier in the year he was a lot better
- 58:16Speaker 5: against lefties, and it's been really bad in July in particular,
- 58:21Speaker 5: So I think it's just a matter of him being
- 58:25Speaker 5: just a little bit more patient at the plate and
- 58:28Speaker 5: getting pictures to come in the strike zone, and I think,
- 58:31Speaker 5: you know, he'll go back on its hair. But it's
- 58:33Speaker 5: been pretty brutal recently.
- 58:35Speaker 1: It really has, and it's been brutal for a lot
- 58:38Speaker 1: of aspects of this team. I was I was going
- 58:41Speaker 1: to actually conclude with talking about Trey Turner kind of
- 58:44Speaker 1: mentioned him.
- 58:44Speaker 3: A little earlier.
- 58:45Speaker 1: So I guess to close us out here, the level
- 58:50Speaker 1: of confidence that US fans have with this team where
- 58:55Speaker 1: they can go not just within the NL but or
- 58:57Speaker 1: at the NL East, but where they can go within
- 58:59Speaker 1: the National League too, And I know there's so much
- 59:02Speaker 1: more time there really is before we start thinking about
- 59:05Speaker 1: the postseason where they're positioned potentially for the postseason. But
- 59:09Speaker 1: what is that level of confidence in this Phillies team
- 59:12Speaker 1: moving forward here, Destiny, because like I feel downtrodden A
- 59:16Speaker 1: lot of a lot of fans do, like what are
- 59:18Speaker 1: you seeing and what have you been seeing? Even maybe
- 59:20Speaker 1: behind the scenes that may give us some hope or
- 59:24Speaker 1: or some confidence here, maybe there isn't any What are
- 59:26Speaker 1: your thoughts?
- 59:27Speaker 5: I mean, I'm I don't know if I'm the right
- 59:29Speaker 5: person to answer this question because I'm I've been pretty
- 59:35Speaker 5: low on this team, and I you know, I acknowledge
- 59:38Speaker 5: just what they accomplished at the beginning of the year,
- 59:41Speaker 5: you know, going nine to nineteen and recovering as fast
- 59:44Speaker 5: as they did, and you know, you feel very optimistic
- 59:48Speaker 5: about Sanchez Wheeler, You're just having an incredible year, Lizardo.
- 59:52Speaker 5: You have to feel at least a little bit good
- 59:54Speaker 5: about their chances in October with that kind of rotation.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: But outside of that, those three guys in the rotation,
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: I just don't feel like this is a good team. Like,
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: you know, Schoreber, he's kind of cooled off recently. You know,
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: Bryce has had a good year, but we're also talking
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: about him being in a slump. It's very top heavy
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: and we probably talked about this before, but it reminds
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: me a lot of the twenty twenty one Phillies who
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: were very top heavy and did not make the playoffs.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: I think when people talk about the Phillies, they talk
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: about them as they will make the playoffs. I am
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: not as certain as other people, you know, you know,
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: speaking right now, they have a two game lead over
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: wild card spot. There are six games out of the division.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: The division. You never know, like they were like a
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: game out around this time last year and they ended
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: up winning the division by thirteen games, so they're never
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: really out of it. But going back to that twenty
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: twenty one Phillies analogy, before they made the playoffs in
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: twenty twenty two for the first time since twenty eleven,
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: the Phillies were known as the September collapse team. Yeah,
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: so I wouldn't be too surprised if it gets you know,
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: worse before it gets better. Saying it that way, so,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: you know, but like it's baseball, you just really never
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: know what's going to happen. And you know, that's the
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: best thing I could say. What if they magically start
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: catching the ball, Like, I think that will be transformative.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: If the defense starts coming through, absolutely.
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: Yes, and starts coming through, I think that's going to
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: make a huge difference. If they get this starter and
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: he ends up being pretty good and they start finally
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: winning some games without their top three on the mound,
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: you know what if they acquire a couple of bullpen
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: arms and the death looks a lot better there, I
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: don't know, like that's that's kind of like the best
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: way I can say it is like you just never
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: know what could happen.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: We don't have a crystal ball. We did not have
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: a crystal ball.
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: And yeah, I just you know, I watched the team
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: and they are winning a lot, like they're winning a
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: lot of those games where it's like how the heck
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: did they they win? But I haven't really liked what
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: I've seen for for most of the year, defense being
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: a big part of that. And I'm not the one
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: to say, like, what is this gonna look in October,
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: because I believe that teams have many identities throughout the
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: year and it's a matter of like which identity should
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: up in October. But throughout the last four months. All
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: these seen as really bad defense. Yeah, at really at
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: important times, and we all know when October, like every
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: little thing matters. And if you have a shortstop that
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: can't make basic plays, you know, if you have a
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: third baseman that's struggling the same way the shortstop, is like,
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: you're not gonna win in October if you have those
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: kind of concerns on defense. So that's kind of how
- 1:03:31Speaker 5: I feel about the team.
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: It's a good way to end it.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: There's a lot of concern with this Phillies team and folks,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: she is Destiny Legardo from Phillies Nation dot com.
