- 0:07The Pittsburgh Steelers faced the San Diego Chargers at Jack Murphy Stadium on Monday night football during week 16 of the 1980 NFL season.
- 0:15The Steelers were the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions under head coach Chuck Noll, but struggled in 1980, missing the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.
- 0:24San Diego was on the other side of success. They qualified for the playoffs in 1979 for the first time in 13 years under the guidance of head coach Don Coriel.
- 0:33They were still flying high in 1980, needing a win in this game to lock up the AFC West.
- 0:38This audio recording is from the CBS Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
- 0:43CBS Radio Sports presents a National Football League AFC battle between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers.
- 0:57Hello everybody, I'm Dick Stockton along with Jack Buck, Hank Stram and Brent Musburger.
- 1:02Together we'll bring you all the action and excitement of tonight's game, sponsored by English Leather Colon and Aftershave, Budweiser, Pennzoil Motor Oil.
- 1:11By the copier division of Sharp Electronics Corporation.
- 1:15By Buick and your Buick dealer. Levi's jeans, Bayer aspirin and by Express Mail Next Day Service.
- 1:22The final playoff berth in the National Football League is at stake as the Steelers and Chargers get ready to conclude the regular season in just a few minutes in San Diego Stadium.
- 1:45Before yesterday's action, the postseason picture was a maze of possibilities, but that's no longer the case.
- 1:51The story tonight is simple. If the Chargers defeat the Steelers, they are the AFC Western Division champions for the second straight year and will advance to the playoffs.
- 2:01However, should Pittsburgh beat San Diego, the season is over for the Chargers.
- 2:05Here's how it works. A Chargers victory gives them the division title over Oakland by virtue of a tiebreaker.
- 2:12Both teams would finish with identical records of 10 and 6.
- 2:15The Raiders would be a wild card entry.
- 2:17A Chargers loss gives Oakland the AFC Western crown and then the New England Patriots would gain the playoffs as a wild card team under tiebreaking procedures.
- 2:27Now a deadlock tonight makes the Chargers a wild card team.
- 2:31But basically San Diego has to win to survive and they have to win against the Steelers who saw their faint playoff hopes vanish yesterday and will be on the outside looking in for the first time in nine years.
- 2:42More after this message.
- 2:44The only thing that may need trimming right now is the Christmas tree, but next year there will be plenty of grass and weeds to take care of.
- 2:51Hi, Pat Summer also suggests you give the Weed Eater Model 807 electric trimmer from True Value Hardware stores.
- 2:57It quickly cuts a 14-inch path along sidewalks, fences, and driveways, and the exclusive tap and go line advance makes it even easier on its user.
- 3:05This Christmas, give the gift that's appreciated now for the work it'll do later.
- 3:09The Weed Eater electric trimmer from participating True Value Hardware stores and home centers.
- 3:14Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll promises no wholesale housecleaning when the four-time world champions try to get their act together again next season.
- 3:23It has become a popular pastime and will continue to be to analyze and dissect where the Steelers fell down this year.
- 3:30But Noll's refusal to panic is an indication of the man. In his very first season back in 1969, when the Steelers finished 1-13, Noll never lost his poise, his perspective, or his sense of purpose.
- 3:43He was the same this year despite the problems and the ultimate failure of his club to make the playoffs.
- 3:48For a team to know the success the Steelers have experienced, it is not easy to face the consequences of 1980.
- 3:55And here's what All-Pro Center Mike Webster says about that.
- 3:58Disappointment is probably not a strong enough word.
- 4:01You know, we've been successful the last eight years. We've been in the playoffs.
- 4:06It was something that we took for granted, but I thought we missed that little bit of intensity.
- 4:11All year long, that's gotten us over the hump in the past in the tight, tough, close games.
- 4:16And there's no excuse and no reason for us to let down because we respected our opponents.
- 4:21We knew what they were capable of, and yet we didn't meet the challenger past the test.
- 4:26And that's something that's going to be hard to swallow during the offseason.
- 4:30Mike Webster, the Steelers' center and their only Pro Bowl member on offense this season, what a difference a year makes.
- 4:37The Steelers' incentives in this one are the obvious.
- 4:40Pride, finishing on a high note, a 10-6 record, knocking the Chargers out of the postseason playoffs.
- 4:45Individually, Frank O'Harris needs 241 yards to wind up with 1,000 yards rushing for the seventh straight time.
- 4:52It'll be tough, and Chuck Noll can move ahead of one of his former mentors, Sid Gilman, as the NFL's ninth all-time winningest coach.
- 4:59And we'll have the San Diego picture in just a moment.

- 5:57The Sun Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, the Senior Bowl. Hear them here.
- 6:05It has been a dazzling season for the San Diego Chargers, particularly on offense.
- 6:10The quarterback Dan Fouts has already broken his own record for most passing yards in a season, and he's established a new NFL mark going over 300 yards in the air seven times this season.
- 6:20On the other end, there's tight end Kellen Winslow, who has caught 79 of Dan Fouts' passes, the most ever by a tight end in the NFL.
- 6:28With John Jefferson also with 79 receptions, and Charlie Joyner with 68, it is a spectacular array indeed.
- 6:35Now Chuck Muncie has come on to give San Diego the balance with the running attack they didn't have earlier, and it all adds up to the number one offense in the AFC.
- 6:43Defensively, the Chargers are not nearly as impressive, despite leading the NFL in quarterback sacks.
- 6:49Three of their defensive linemen are heading for the Pro Bowl, including Louis Kelcher, who was injured and didn't play last year.
- 6:55Kelcher looks upon the importance of this game in this way.
- 6:59We're up for this game, you know, the biggest game of the year for us. This is for all the marbles.
- 7:05We knew it was going to be close all the way down the wire, and we're just glad to be in a position that we are.
- 7:12We could be completely out of it by now, like a lot of teams are.
- 7:16So we're grateful to be 10 and 5 and coming home and playing many night's footballers at Pittsburgh, and winning this will mean the division.
- 7:26The Chargers, Louis Kelcher, named to the Pro Bowl along with Fred Dean and San Diego's top pass rusher, Gary Johnson.
- 7:33Dean, however, may miss tonight's game due to the death of his young daughter.
- 7:38Back with a final word in just a moment.
- 7:40Despite the Steelers' obvious pride and intent to finish the season on a positive note, it's San Diego playing at home with the same opportunity Buffalo and Cleveland had yesterday,
- 7:49a chance to win their game and become division champions.
- 7:52The Bills and Browns did just that. Now we'll see if the San Diego Chargers are hungry and have what it takes to follow suit.
- 7:59In just one minute, we'll be going to Jack Buck and Hank Stram in San Diego Stadium for football action.
- 8:04Until next time, this is Dick Stockton, CBS Radio Sports.
- 8:08At right end, number 75, Go Green. At right end, number 64, Steve Brunette. At right end, number 76, John Vanizak.

- 8:30And now with the play-by-play of this evening's game between Pittsburgh and San Diego, here's Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
- 8:37At right corner, at number 29, Ron Johnson. At right corner, at number 47, Bell Run.
- 8:46At number 31, Donnie Schell. At number 23, from the San Diego Stadium in San Diego, California, on the CBS Radio Network,
- 8:58and around the world with American Forces Radio, CBS Radio presents the final 1980 Monday Night National Football League game with the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the San Diego Chargers.
- 9:11Good evening everyone, this is Jack Buck along with Hank Stram. And we'll be bringing you all the action and excitement of tonight's game.
- 9:19About 55,000 fans are here. And you can tell that. The temperature is 60 degrees. The Steelers have already been introduced.
- 9:29The defensive unit of the San Diego Chargers being introduced at the moment. And the Chargers song this evening is all or nothing at all.
- 9:39They're either the division champions or they are out of the playoffs altogether. This big crowd greets Louis Culture, their favorite defensive lineman.
- 9:48This broadcast is presented by the authority of the National Football League. It is intended for the private use of our audience.
- 9:54Any rebroadcast or other use of this broadcast without the express written consent of the San Diego Chargers is prohibited.
- 10:01We're at the San Diego Stadium in San Diego. The Chargers are hosting the Steelers. We'll hear from Hank Stram and we'll continue in just one moment.
- 10:11Hank Stram, this has to be a good football game. And from the Charger viewpoint, I would hate to go on the field knowing that I had to beat a team as good as the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 10:23They're out of the playoffs. They've been in the playoffs nine years in a row until this year. And going out there knowing you have to beat them is a handful, isn't it?
- 10:30It really is. And thank goodness from the San Diego standpoint, really that they don't have Starworth, they don't have Smith, they lost some offensive people.
- 10:38And for that reason, why they haven't been nearly as efficient as they've been in the past, but they're still a very good football team.
- 10:44And on a one game basis, as you say, boy, they can always be very tough.
- 10:48And tonight they've lost the linebacker Dennis Winston with the flu. And Randy Grossman has a bad back and Benny Cunningham will be starting.
- 10:56The referee is Jim Cunningham. He brings the co-captains to the center of the field for the coin toss. The visiting Steelers will call the toss.
- 11:05We have a grass field here at San Diego Stadium. Little or no wind advantage. Whoever wins the toss will take the ball.
- 11:15The coin is in the air. The Steelers call it and the Steelers have won it.
- 11:20The Steelers will receive. Both teams are on the field and shortly we'll have the opening kickoff.
- 11:25Ralph Fenerska will kick it off. The deep man is Larry Anderson. He's averaged 28 yards plus for a kick return.
- 11:35He is flanked by Greg Hawthorne and Frank Pollard. San Diego kicking off from our right to our left to get this game started.
- 11:42San Diego Hank looks like they're up on the clouds and Pittsburgh looks like they're right down on the grass emotionally.
- 11:48You really have to be careful from an emotional standpoint when you get so high that you don't know when you're going to come back down.
- 11:55In the process you might get yourself in serious trouble.
- 11:57Here's the kick to Anderson on the nine. To the 15 running right, to the 20, to the 25 getting outside to the 27 yard line.
- 12:04Downfield was Glenn Edwards as he frequently is for San Diego to make the tackle at the 27 yard line of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 12:13The first thing I think is very important as far as the beginning of this football game.
- 12:18I think that if I were the coach of the San Diego Chargers I would feel much, much better about starting the game playing defensively
- 12:23than I would if I had to take the ball off into 75 or 80 yards because the emotional level is very high and you can make a big mistake on offense and get yourself in serious trouble.
- 12:33Sal and Swanner to the left. Flyer and Harris are in the backfield for Jerry Bradshaw. The up man is Cranko Harris got only a yard over the right side.
- 12:43Filling in very quickly was Ray Preston the outside linebacker. He jammed things right back at Louis Keltcher and Harris got only one yard.
- 12:50And we should acknowledge the appearance here of Rocky Flyer at the outset. Hank what a fine individual and a great football player he's been.
- 12:58Yes and Pittsburgh is going to miss him and professional football is going to miss a great player and a person like Rocky Flyer.
- 13:03Right into Benny Cunningham he's on the right side. I think we're going to see Pittsburgh try to throw their backs more than they have in the past.
- 13:10They like to throw the ball downfield. Here's Rocky Flyer out to the 31 yard line and he was felted by Woody Lowe the outside linebacker.
- 13:17It is going to be third down and five.
- 13:20The one thing that Pittsburgh Steelers cannot afford to do is get themselves in trouble by not making yardage on first and 10.
- 13:28They have to stay out of the third and long situations because the defensive line of the San Diego Chargers is big and strong and they can really control the line of scrimmage and really get after the passers on the obvious passing situations.
- 13:40Third and five from the Steeler 31 the tight end to Cunningham is out for the additional wide receiver.
- 13:45Calvin Sweeney is in Bradshaw back to throw a lot of time. Steps up and throws. Oh the middle and it's caught at the 45 yard line of San Diego by Theo Bell.
- 13:54And there's nothing wrong with Bradshaw's iron even though it's late in the year. Brother he threw a fastball.
- 13:59Bell went high and caught it and he was tackled immediately and they give him forward progress down to the 43 yard line of San Diego.
- 14:07Bradshaw was trying to throw the ball to Rocky Blyer the linebacker the left linebacker on that side knocked him right to the turf.
- 14:15He had no chance as Ray Preston 52. He went inside to Theo Bell and he made the big play.
- 14:21And the first down at the San Diego 43 yard line. Split bags Harrison Blyer.
- 14:27Right handed back in there Blyer all over the left side breaks it inside the 35 yard line down there the 34. And he got a quick five yards.
- 14:37Mike Puller was playing the safety spot with Glenn Edwards came up and made the hit.
- 14:41I think the common feeling the Pittsburgh Steelers like the trap especially in even spacing even spacing meaning that you have two tackles over the offensive guards and a middle linebacker off the ball.
- 14:53I think they feel they can go after Bob Horn the middle linebacker and they've done a pretty good job of it so far.
- 14:58Blyer picked up nine yards and it is second down and one from the 34 and it's Franco Harris for a first down down to the 30 yard line of San Diego.
- 15:08And he was tackled by DeJournay who was playing in place of Fred Dean at the defensive end spot and the Chargers will miss Fred Dean here.
- 15:16They really will and Ted Peterson the offensive left tackle number 66 of the San Diego Chargers. I guarantee he feels much much better playing against DeJournay than he would against Dean because Dean is really a snoot for.
- 15:2811 55 remaining in the first quarter no score. Pittsburgh has held the ball from the outset there at the 30 yard line of the Chargers.
- 15:36And on first down here is Bradshaw going to throw on first down a lot of times and looks now throws and it is caught inside the 20 yard line for another first down for the Steelers and the hit was made immediately by the cornerback Willie Buchanan.
- 15:52Lynn Swan went high and caught it. Buchanan dropped him and the ball is now resting at the 18 yard line of San Diego.
- 16:00Very good march by Pittsburgh very good march by Pittsburgh and that time they ran a play action pass. Bradshaw had all the time in the world to throw the ball did a good job of reconnoitering the area.
- 16:10Finally threw the ball to the outside to Swan and they're now in a great position to win and get some scoring to score some points on this very first drive of the game.
- 16:18They're at the 18 they haven't put any pressure on Bradshaw. He was now at the 18 yard line of San Diego and on first down he gives the ball to Franco Harris following a block by Blyer he gets three yards to the 15 Woody Lowe tackled him along with Louis Keltcher.
- 16:32He waited for Blyer's block and Harris picked up three.
- 16:36That was a counter play. He took a step to the right with the express purpose of making the linebacker the middle linebacker stay at home so that a guard or a tackle to get a good block on him. Then he went back to the left side.
- 16:48Blyer did a good job of blocking the linebacker and he popped through there for three yards. Oh boy they're rooting for the Steelers in New England.
- 16:55The ball is at the 15 yard line and it is second down and seven for Pittsburgh. Oh gold trousers black stripe black jersey black helmets and a delay to Franco Harris over the right side.
- 17:06He moves down to about the 12 yard line. It'll bring about a third down play Leroy Jones tackle him he's the biggest man up front.
- 17:16He and Louis Keltcher but Jones is 6 8 2 60 and it's going to be third down and four for Pittsburgh and talking about New England very happy to hear today that they gave Ron Erhard a new contract.
- 17:27I think he's very deserving and I think that eventually they're going to do a super job there with the great talent they have in New England.
- 17:34But they'll be through for the year unless Pittsburgh can upset San Diego here tonight. The ball is at the 12 it's third and four.
- 17:40Steelers have kept the ball for more than five minutes. Brad John third down and four is straight back to throw.
- 17:47There's no pressure he throws into the end zone and incomplete and a flag. No flag no flag.
- 17:53I thought the official was reaching for it. Benny Cunningham is really complaining.
- 17:57Cunningham is really complaining about the actions of Mike Williams over there on the corner and I thought the official was reaching in his pocket for that flag.
- 18:04I think it was the reason for his comb on to comb his hair Jack Cunningham came up beeping about the call and into the game with Matt Far he's kicked off out of his last 14 he's kicked 18 out of 26.
- 18:16The ball will be held by the punter cold quit Bradshaw two out of three.
- 18:21He missed that one in the end zone and the field goal try by the soccer style kicker Matt Far the ball at the 19 and 29 yard drive.
- 18:31Good snap good set and another it went off to the left and the Steelers failed to score. Matt Far has been hot but he missed that one 928 left in the quarter.
- 18:42The ball will come out to the 20 the Chargers get it for the first time and we'll see some fireworks now with the score nothing nothing let's take time out.
- 18:50Well you would have figured the Steelers would come away with some points I thought it was a good enough snap and set didn't you Hank?
- 18:56Oh yeah he just kicked the ball crooked my little daughter won after one of our games in Kansas City.
- 19:01We missed the field goal and she came back after the game she said dad how come the kicker kicked the ball so crooked.
- 19:06That's the opposite of straight here's Fouts with Chuck Munsee the lone setback two tight ends.
- 19:12Kellen Winslow and Greg McCrary for San Diego and a first down pass by Fouts what's new over the middle caught up to 25 and then dropped and stripped of the ball was Winslow and Ron Johnson the little quarterback climbed his frame he had the ball but then dropped it.
- 19:28You know I missed a five yard game.
- 19:29Excuse me Jack one thing that you cannot do against the Pittsburgh Steelers you just can't line up in a vanilla formation basic formations without any movement and expect to beat Pittsburgh because they're big and strong do an excellent job of putting pressure
- 19:41using a pressure kind of defense on past defense.
- 19:44You've got to move their strong safety Donnie Shell around some and to keep him out of the running game.
- 19:49Here's the running game of San Diego Munsee sweeping right comes out for four yards and hit hard at the 24 yard line by Donnie Shell.
- 19:58Shell is the strong safety a very good tackler and it's going to be third down and six Pittsburgh up front is playing LC Greenwood Joe Green Steve Brunette John Banizak the linebackers Jack Ham Jack Lambert and Lauren Taves
- 20:10the cornerbacks are Ron Johnson and Mel Blunt Donnie Shell and Mike Wagner are the safety net.
- 20:15You know one thing about the stealer defense their seventh internal defense very good against the rush and 12 against the pass which means they haven't done a good job of rushing the passer during the course of this 80 season.
- 20:26Motion by Jefferson fouls with a quick pass it's caught by Winslow for a first down across the 35 yard line out to the 39 yard line and he was tackled by Wagner.
- 20:37That Winslow is 6 6 2 52 that's the 80th pass he has caught this year and he's going to be one of the keys to the game because they throw the ball to him from so many different formations and so many different looks.
- 20:51You don't know where he's coming from and it's very difficult to be very difficult with Donnie Shell when they get him one on one to cover him on any passing situation.
- 20:59Pittsburgh kept the ball for five minutes 32 seconds missed a field goal the Chargers just got their first first down here is Muncie popping it out to the 45.
- 21:07He is out to the 47 and near the 48 with a strong power run over the right side and he carried for about eight yards on the first down run Jack Lambert and Donnie Shell Mike Wagner were all there for the hit.
- 21:20You know they changed their personality a little bit since they got Chuck Muncie Jack. They used to be a one one backfield formation and that one back was always the fullback.
- 21:29Now because once he had such an outstanding dimension to their attack he's the guy that occupies that deep position has really done a good job.
- 21:36It is second down and one at the San Diego 48 motion by Winslow and here's a gift to Muncie gets a first down he's out to midfield and beyond to the 49.
- 21:47A first out for San Diego Hanks the Steelers are using the back when Woodruff on every down and why not because San Diego pearls and almost every now.
- 21:56That's exactly right and with five defensive backs however you miss a linebacker and that one defensive back has to play like a linebacker.
- 22:03If you run the ball more than you expected you were expected to run the ball. They're going to have some success from that standpoint.
- 22:09We have 659 remaining in the scoreless first quarter and the clock is running the balls at midfield and a charger first down.
- 22:17They're clad in white with a gold trouser. Jefferson goes in motion.
- 22:20Bouts gives to Muncie coming outside to the left comes to the 45 and he is out of bounds at the 44 yard line of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mel Blunt shoved him out.
- 22:31That time was a great illustration of how they're trying to control Donnie Shell. Normally he's up close to the line of scrimmage and is ready to murder against the run.
- 22:40That time they send Jefferson in motion to the left and he was about 12 yards off the ball when the ball was snapped and that's where you want him because he can't tackle anybody when he's down the field 12 yards.
- 22:50Muncie got six and it's second and four from the Pittsburgh 44 no score. Six forty three left in the quarter.
- 22:56Look at all the movement and look where Shell is. He's about 12 yards deep. Double covers on the outside people. Somebody inside.
- 23:04Bouts goes over the middle and it is in it. It's incomplete and almost picked off by Donnie Shell. Shell should have intercepted it. He has seven this year.
- 23:12He tried to float it out there to Kellan Winslow. Hadn't turned around and that was on a second down play and it's going to be third down.
- 23:21And if you notice the absence of flags that's far this game. Yeah. Kind of fun to watch a game where you don't have to look like look at the game like a tennis match and try to figure out where the flag is going to be thrown.
- 23:31Third and four from the 44. And here are a couple of first downs in this drive. Ron Smith is a wide receiver.
- 23:38Muncie is out. Mike Thomas is in the backfield for the Chargers. He can catch the ball.
- 23:42Now here comes Shell. Look how deep he is. Here's Bob's going to throw. He throws off to the right and it is caught for a first down inside the 40 yard line.
- 23:51Back on the immediately by Woodruff and it'll be another first down. And it was Kellan Winslow with another reception.
- 23:59Yeah it's fun to watch this because Donnie Shell who has to cover has to cover him man for man usually was in the middle of the formation.
- 24:07Wasn't even close to him on the play. They're using the five defensive backs as you mentioned. But Donnie Shell they're negating his alignment and the great thing that he does from a defensive standpoint.
- 24:17Neither team has applied pressure to the passer thus far in this game. Now they're all looking at Pittsburgh and watching the man go in motion.
- 24:24The ball's at the 38 off the Steelers and a first down for Pouch. He's going to put it up. He sets up and throws one over the middle and Jefferson caught incomplete at the 10 yard line.
- 24:34And he was walloped by Mike Wagner. They tried to catch him with one hand. That's all he could do. And Wagner unloaded on him and the ball fell to the turf at the 10.
- 24:43Now that's an interesting mismatch there. They finally wound up with Jefferson running a pattern down the middle and Donnie Shell trying to cover him man for man.
- 24:51He had some help from the inside. Had he not had that help he'd have made a big play.
- 24:55The Steelers secondary had been burned frequently this year. Other teams have been able to move the ball through the air 204 yards per game and a 52 percent passing completion.
- 25:08But 26 interceptions by the Steelers. Second down and 10. From the Pittsburgh 38 Pouch on a delay to Muncie.
- 25:17Muncie stretches out to the 35 yard line and it'll be third down and seven. And Muncie is doing a much better job of keeping the ball close to his body and not swinging it out away from his body like he has in some of the other games that we've seen him play.
- 25:31He has to practice and rehearse that every day of the week because he has some bad habits as far as hearing the football is concerned and you have to stay on him and he'll do a good job.
- 25:40I didn't think he really exploded when he got the ball Hank did you? No he was looking. He was looking reading the blocks trying to get as much out of the play as he could.
- 25:47Robin Cole is in as a linebacker for the Steelers. He's quite good at blitzing and it's third down and seven. Look at the players Pouch. He has blitzed the pass.
- 25:55He's caught by the running back Muncie. He has the first down to the 25. Tackled at the 21 yard line. They beat the blitz.
- 26:02They beat the blitz and Schell again was about 12 or 13 yard deep and he's the key to the defense as I mentioned earlier to keep him out of the defensive flow of things.
- 26:11And he was going to do a good job of moving the football but they're doing a fine job of putting pressure on Donnie Schell at this stage of the game.
- 26:18It was third and four. He passed to Winslow for a first down. It was third and seven now. He passed to Muncie for a first down.
- 26:25Earlier it was it was another third and six and he passed to Winslow. Look at the switch this time. Jefferson comes on the other side. Look at now.
- 26:33They got Donnie Schell on Winslow on Jefferson. There's Muncie's hit popping it straight up the middle and going down to the 15 yard line for three yards.
- 26:43Spinning his way into the arms of Jack Lambert at second down and four. We have four ten left in the first quarter and no score.
- 26:50This is quite a drive by the Chargers. They started from their own 20 after Pittsburgh missed the field goal. There is no score here.
- 26:56And the great thing about it is they had a head they have at this stage of the game a very very good blend of pass and run.
- 27:04And that's putting a lot of pressure on the defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Joiner and Jefferson come to the left.
- 27:10Winslow is on a wing and now he comes in motion. Second down and four and straight ahead is Muncie one yard. That's all he got to the 14.
- 27:17And it'll be third down and three and Steve Pernes stops him in cold fashion. And that time they're still using five defensive backs.
- 27:25They're using Ron Johnson, Blanchell, Wagner.
- 27:31Up front Don Masick is the center for San Diego with Doug Wilkerson and Ed White to guard. Billy Shields and Audick are the tackles.
- 27:38And Dwayne Woodruff is the fifth defensive back. Mike Thomas checks in for the Chargers and it's third and three from the 14 of Pittsburgh.
- 27:46They'll send it back to somebody over to the left side maybe on the notion. Oh they don't this time.
- 27:50Foul's going to put it up. He throws inside the pen. Incomplete. Incomplete. Off the hands of Greg McCrary the tight end.
- 27:57Covered by Mike Wagner. Fourth down field goal time for San Diego.
- 28:03And Bernerska, Ron Bernerska comes in.
- 28:13Mike Fuller will hold the ball and Bernerska will try to put San Diego on top. He'll kick it from 23 yards away a 33 yard try.
- 28:23Pittsburgh missed one earlier. 3.05 left in the first quarter. No score. The snap is right on. Fuller gets it down and the kick is good.
- 28:34San Diego jumps out front with 3.01 remaining in the first quarter. Time out of the field to score. The Chargers three, fifth turn nothing.
- 28:44Bernerska will kick it off. Larry Anderson deep flanked by Hawthorne and Pollard for Pittsburgh. This game's off to a rather good start Henry.
- 28:51We thought it would be and so far it's very exciting and everything we thought the game would be that's exactly what it has been so far in the first quarter.
- 29:00Pittsburgh missed the 29 yard field goal. Bernerska kicked a 33 yard field goal. The Chargers lead 3-0. 3.01 left in the first quarter.
- 29:10Right at the 60 mark. Full House 55,000. Grassfield here at San Diego Stadium and Jim Tunney the referee says kick it away.
- 29:20And Bernerska boots it. Kicks it high rather short. Anderson took it on the seven up the middle. 10-15 running right 20-25. That's all.
- 29:30That's all. San Diego all over him. Downfield first with Bauer a very good member of their special teams.
- 29:37Yeah it really is. He's a tough two-fisted guy that really is kind of a sledgehammer back. Does a good job on short yardage situation and very very outstanding on the special team.
- 29:47Well the last time Pittsburgh had the ball. They started at their 27. This time they started the 25.
- 29:55Sidney Thornton checks in. He's in the backfield with Franco Harris. Thornton can give an offense quite a lift.
- 30:01Here's 5'11, 230 pounds. First down for Bradshaw. Cunningham the tight end. He blocks for Franco. Nothing going. No game.
- 30:09The linebacker Ray Preston. Cracked right in there as soon as he read run and stopped Harris in his tracks.
- 30:17The defensive line of the San Diego Chargers really at that time really licked the offensive line of the Pittsburgh Steelers at no chance whatsoever.
- 30:25And I thought that the pullback Franco Harris was kind of soft trying to run into that time. Looked for a place to run and there was no place to go.
- 30:33Second down and 10 from the 25. Up front it's Jones, Kelcher, Johnson and Descherner for the Chargers.
- 30:41Bradshaw is going to pass on second down. Throws it off to the left. It's caught by Franco Harris.
- 30:46A first down and more beyond the 35. Out to the 38. A first down. Bob Horne the linebacker trailing him tackled him.
- 30:53Because of the great pressure that you get from the defensive line I think it can be very important as I mentioned earlier for the Pittsburgh Steelers to throw the ball a lot to the backs.
- 31:01Get rid of the ball quickly. Not wait too long in the pocket and make sure that you don't get in a situation where you have third and long very often.
- 31:08If that's the situation why they're going to be in trouble.
- 31:11Come on Washington when they beat the Chargers 40 to 17 they just kept dropping the ball off to those backs and the Chargers couldn't stop them.
- 31:18That's exactly what you have to do. You have to be get rid of the ball quickly and get it to the backs.
- 31:22Again of 13 here is Sydney Thornton straight ahead out to the 40. Got only two yards on the play.
- 31:28Willie Low tackled him Bradshaw is three out of four. 51 yards. He's faced with second and eight and we have 120 left in the first quarter.
- 31:37The other thing that's very important is to throw play action passes on first down.
- 31:41That's why they want to run the ball as much as they have been running it on first down to make sure they establish that so that they can incorporate the play action pass with a run on first and 10.
- 31:51Steelers with a record of nine and six trying for their 10th win at second down and eight from their own 40.
- 31:58Bradshaw sets the running backs. They are Thornton and Harris.
- 32:02Bell is to the left. Swan to the right here is Thornton running right and gets only the 40 yard line. No game.
- 32:09Bob Horn tackled him after he's been slowed down up front.
- 32:13Louis Kelcher and others had prevented Thornton from getting a full head of steam and it's third down and eight. That's the one that's the one deficiency that the Pittsburgh Steelers have.
- 32:23They do not have blazing speed as everybody knows to run outside.
- 32:26They're a much better straight ahead running team with play action passes and pocket passes than they are.
- 32:31And East West team trying to go sideways.
- 32:33Alvin Sweeney is a wide receiver 15 seconds left in the first quarter. San Diego leads three to nothing. Steelers have third and eight from their own 40 yard line.
- 32:43Three wide receivers. Bradshaw is going to pass. That's good blocking. Dumps it off short and it is caught for a first down and now a flag goes down late.
- 32:52And a completion to the 45 of San Diego a first down and then the flag.
- 32:57It was a late hit Jack. I'm sure it was a late hit. They'll tack on a penalty against the San Diego Chargers.
- 33:07Lynn Swan caught the ball at the 45 and as Hank Strams said a late hit. That's what it was. Puts the ball down.
- 33:16First to fall. Late hit. Number 27. First down.
- 33:22Lynn Edwards number 27 was the one who hit late. It's one late on the passing play.
- 33:29Only three seconds remaining in the first quarter and now they'll start the clock with the snap of the ball and it'll be the final play of the first quarter.
- 33:39Penny Cunningham the tight end is in there. Good time for a play action pass here in first and 10. They've been running the ball quite a bit.
- 33:44And it gives it to Franco Harris and Harris dies for about five near the 25 in the arms of Charles Dijonais.
- 33:53And that marks the end of the quarter. It'll be second and five for Pittsburgh at the San Diego 25 when we come back.
- 34:00The end of the first quarter with a score. San Diego 3. Steelers nothing.
- 34:04Each team ran 15 plays in the first quarter. The Steelers had the ball. 8 minutes 23 seconds.
- 34:10San Diego 6 minutes 36 seconds. San Diego a 33 yard field goal by Panerska and a 29 yard miss by Matt Barr.
- 34:19Now the Steelers have the ball and with the help of the only family in the first quarter a late hit. They have second down and five at the San Diego 25.
- 34:29A rather brisk game, Hank Stram. Yes and kind of a brisk night too for San Diego. I haven't seen the weather here like this in a long, long time.
- 34:36We had to land in Palm Desert yesterday and then fly up in the smog or fog, whatever you call it.
- 34:42I was looking for fellow Legosi to jump out of there someplace. It was eerie.
- 34:45Oh West Coast is sucked in. It's second down and five now for the Steelers. They're on the march again.
- 34:51They have Thornton in the backfield with Harris. And they give it to Thornton. And no game, no game.
- 34:58Maybe a yard at the 25 yard line. Louis Goucher stopped him in very cold fashion.
- 35:04One yard for Thornton. He seems to be getting that ball rather late. It's not quite a delay, Hank.
- 35:10But the handoff is very deep into the line. Well he tries, yeah, he means into the line, not away from the line. Yes, that's right.
- 35:16And he was looking as he was trying to get the ball from the quarterback time at that time.
- 35:21And for that reason it looked like he was not hitting into the hole with full steam ahead like he normally does.
- 35:28Brad Dean checks in for the first time for the Chargers at defensive end, third and four. He's trying to put pressure on Bradshaw.
- 35:34He steps up and throws incomplete. He tried to get it out to Swan as he was going down.
- 35:41And now a flag has been thrown. And we'll check the flag. It is not intentional grounding because the referee didn't throw the flag.
- 35:48I think they call something on San Diego downfield. Let's see what they call.
- 35:51But I think it looks like it might be possibly against the San Diego Chargers.
- 35:55And it is interference against San Diego.
- 36:00Interference will keep the drive going and it will be a first down for Pittsburgh.
- 36:07And the ball is down at their 24.
- 36:09That's interference, number 27 defense, first down.
- 36:13Ball against Glenn Edwards. He was called for the late hit earlier.
- 36:1714-17 left and a half and a first down at the 24 for Pittsburgh. Brad Dean is out. Charles Dijonnet back in there at the defensive end spot.
- 36:25Rocky Blyer comes in for Pittsburgh.
- 36:27Unusual that there's only two penalties so far. Both of them have been against the same person.
- 36:32Glenn Edwards, number 27 against the San Diego Chargers.
- 36:35First down at the San Diego 24.
- 36:40John, under center. Webster snaps the ball. Here's a give to Franco trying to get outside left.
- 36:47He booms down to the 22-yard line.
- 36:51Mike Williams had him head on and brought him down. Williams 5'10", 179.
- 36:56Franco has 6'2", 225 and they've had head on at the San Diego 22, second and eight.
- 37:02That was a counter play again. That time he took a step to the right.
- 37:06Rocky Blyer was leading the leading block around the play where they were able to get on the outside of Dijonnet, the defensive right end,
- 37:13which is really a no-no, but it happened that time and that's why he made a little yardage on the play. Not much, but he did get outside.
- 37:18San Diego wins this game. They win their division. If they lose the game, they're out of the playoff.
- 37:23They ought to be able to throw the ball to the back of the flat the way that coverage is, Jack.
- 37:27Bradshaw back to throw and there it is off the fingertips of Franco Harris rushing over to cover with Bob Horne.
- 37:33He called the play, Hank, and Bradshaw threw a little too quickly.
- 37:36Yeah, he didn't have to throw it that fast, but he threw it very quickly and was off balance, falling away when he threw it.
- 37:41They threw it right into the turf.
- 37:43Tight end checks out for the Steelers, Cunningham and the three wide receivers are T-Bell, Lynn Swan and Calvin Sweeney.
- 37:50Bradshaw is now four out of six, 51 yards. The fifth back is Jerome Dove. Bob Horne is out for San Diego, third and eight.
- 38:00Thirteen and a half left and a half. Tigers leading three to nothing.
- 38:05On third and eight, Mr. Bradshaw is back to throw.
- 38:09Rush throws and caught at the 15-yard line by the back court and he has blasted down.
- 38:15It's going to be fourth down and about a yard and a half and Pittsburgh trailing three to nothing has a decision to make here.
- 38:22It's fourth down and a yard and a half.
- 38:26And are they going to go home for the field goal? Yes, here comes Matt Barr.
- 38:30Jerome Dove with the extra back for the Chargers made the hit on Thornton who caught the ball and smacked it the 15-yard line.
- 38:40In this kind of a game, you know, you have to play it right to the tilt even though you're out of the race.
- 38:44I'm talking about Pittsburgh. They have to, they have an obligation as professional people to play the game like they were in the race because it affects the standings and what happens, for example, to the New England Patriots.
- 38:55They have a strong obligation to do that. Matt Barr missed one from 29 yards.
- 38:59He'll kick this one from 32 yards with Colquitt holding the ball.
- 39:03The snap is a little high. They get it down. This pick is good and this game is tied.
- 39:10We have a 3-3 tie with 12-47 remaining in the half.
- 39:15Matt Barr is one for two and he ties it up with the score.
- 39:18San Diego 3, the Steelers 3. Let's take time out. Matt Barr will kick off. Bernard Jackson is deep along with Hank Bauer. Jackson used to play for Denver.
- 39:30They're standing at the 5. The score is tied 3-all. 12-47 left in the half.
- 39:35Hank Stram and Jack Buck with you for CBS Radio. Next Sunday, wild card exit.
- 39:43And you'll hear the games here on CBS Radio on the 28th. And happy holidays to all of our listeners on CBS Radio.
- 39:50The kick by Matt Barr is a line drive and it goes to Jackson on the 5. Drops it, fumbles it, picks it up at the 8.
- 39:57He's to the 10 and he's knocked down at the 11 yard line.
- 40:01Outfield is Tim Moijerty for Pittsburgh. A defensive back.
- 40:05He's the only member of the Pittsburgh Steelers who ever played for another football team.
- 40:09Moijerty downfield to make the tackle at the 11 yard line. And about 3 out of 7 goes back to work.
- 40:19He looked like a little sleepy on that return, didn't he?
- 40:21Yeah, he did. He was looking downfield as he was trying to pick up the football that time.
- 40:25And I think anytime that you get the ball between your feet and try to pick it up the way it's hard to find.
- 40:29The ball's at the 11. Wins law and Jefferson. Both come on the wing.
- 40:35Joiner the other wide receiver. McCrary the tight end. Muncie the running back.
- 40:39A fake to him. The pass by Foutslong over the middle and it's complete.
- 40:43Out around the 35. He tried to get it to Winslow who was in double coverage led by Mike Wagner.
- 40:49Number two on the play for the Steelers. Number 23.
- 40:52They take it down and 10.
- 40:53Fake that time inside to Muncie on a play action.
- 40:56And then tried to throw the ball. They wanted to hold the linebacker and throw over the top of the linebacker between the defensive backs.
- 41:02And Winslow, you know, makes those kind of catches usually. He didn't that time and it falls in complete.
- 41:08Boy, this foul's fouled up some statistics during the year. More than 4,400 yards. 30 touchdown passes.
- 41:14Joiner's going in motion to the left and they create a triple wing formation. There's Muncie.
- 41:19Muncie running left and a flag goes down. Muncie is out to the 19 yard line.
- 41:24He picked up seven yards and a flag is down. Donnie Schell made the tackle.
- 41:29In of nine yards. Tackle by number 58, Jack Lepper.
- 41:33And it is a motion penalty against San Diego.
- 41:36What were you saying about that motion on the part of Joiner, Hank?
- 41:39Well, they have a slot to the right and they have a tight end on the left side on the wing.
- 41:44And then they send Joiner in motion to the left. That makes three people on the left side, which is a triple wing formation.
- 41:49They camouflage it and they put a lot of pressure on Schell so they don't let him get on the line.
- 41:53They're making a motion offensive right guard, number 67, five yards.
- 41:59Ed White was in motion. Jim Tunney, the referee, Pat Harder, the umpire,
- 42:03Burl Tolar, the headlinesman, line judge Dick McKenzie, Pat Knight, the back judge, side judge Gil Mase,
- 42:09and Don Hakes is the field judge. It's second and 15 for the Chargers at their own seven.
- 42:15San Diego's really doing a good job of disjoining the defense. Here comes Schell again.
- 42:20He starts to the left and goes back to the right. He's on the line of scrimmage now.
- 42:24And on second and long, Pounce drops into the end zone to throw over the middle and incomplete.
- 42:30Very aggressive play by Jack Hamm against Greg McFerry.
- 42:34Fans thought it was interference, but the timing was perfect.
- 42:37Yeah, it wasn't the pass interference. Hamm did an excellent job that time on McFerry,
- 42:41who was trying to release downfield. And the great thing that he did, he kind of smothered him a little bit coming off the ball,
- 42:46and he didn't have the timing that he wanted.
- 42:48Hank, with all that motion and switching on the Chargers, they're just waiting for Donnie Schell to make one mistake here.
- 42:53That's right. That's exactly right. And he's such a great player.
- 42:56When we talk about what they're trying to do to Schell, that's a compliment to him because they want to get him removed from the running game.
- 43:01But he's a great player.
- 43:02From the end zone, Pounce throws over the middle. And Joyner with a brilliant catch at the 35-yard line.
- 43:08Down at the 36, what a catch. Right over the top of Mike Lagerpie.
- 43:14And Charlie Joyner, who came into the game with 68 receptions, he's lifting a bit as he comes off the field.
- 43:20And that was third down and long, third and 15.
- 43:25We talk about running shoot offense, that's exactly what this is.
- 43:29They put guys all over the field. And the nice thing about their attack is that they create mismatches, and they use the entire width of the field.
- 43:37They spread the defense, and they get the people they want on mismatches. And that, there was a great illustration.
- 43:42Schell again, now he's on the line of scrimmage.
- 43:44Johnny Schell, 31, now he's running across the field.
- 43:46Look, he was on, now he's off the line of scrimmage.
- 43:49Muncie running to the 40, 45, 49, midfield.
- 43:53Fresh down, San Diego on the big run by Muncie, down by Wecker.
- 43:58They're gambling on the fact they're going to throw, throw, throw.
- 44:00They're playing with two linebackers instead of three.
- 44:03And if you can run the ball successfully, like they do with a great back like Muncie,
- 44:07they're doing a good job of establishing balance of the run in the pass, and that's why they're doing a good job of running the football.
- 44:1314 yards on the run by Muncie. Now we have 11 minutes left and a half.
- 44:18Mike Thomas is in the backfield. Muncie has carried eight times, 45 yards and caught one bad.
- 44:23Watch, Johnny Schell is on the line of scrimmage again this time. That's where he likes to play.
- 44:27Bouts going to put it up on first down.
- 44:29Jefferson again.
- 44:30In the middle and incomplete. Down at the 35-yard line on Pittsburgh and they have receivers, Hank, who don't mind at all going over the middle, catching the ball and taking the hit.
- 44:40That time they had a mismatch with Donnie Schell trying to cover Jefferson. He can't do that.
- 44:44Usually Schell will cover the tight end. That time he'd cover the outside receiver and it's a tough responsibility.
- 44:50And you have to give San Diego a lot of credit for establishing this kind of a flow and this kind of pressure on the defense of this Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 44:58Wagner was over there helping out for Donnie Schell and it's second and 10 from midfield.
- 45:033-3 the score, 10-49 left and a half. San Diego has the ball at the 50.
- 45:08Schell is on the line of scrimmage again this time.
- 45:11And on second down, Bouts looking to throw. Back to throw. No pressure.
- 45:15Throws at the 40-yard line and caught by Jefferson. Down to the 35 and that's the first down.
- 45:21Donnie Schell covering. Did they have the same mismatch, Hank?
- 45:23Same thing. He's on the line of scrimmage.
- 45:25He's trying to cover Jefferson and there's no way to where they can do it if they don't rush the passer better than what they're doing right now.
- 45:31What should Pittsburgh be doing?
- 45:33Well, they could bring in another linebacker.
- 45:35They could bring in another linebacker, take the back out and try to do it that way and put more pressure on the quarterback by glitzing himself.
- 45:42The ball is to the Pittsburgh 35 and a first down.
- 45:47Ron Smith is the wide receiver with Jefferson.
- 45:49Here he comes in motion with a triple wing. Look at Schell. He's about 12 yards off the ball.
- 45:54Here running with the ball is Thomas. He's to the 30, he's to the 25, he's to the 20-yard line with a San Diego first down.
- 46:02Again, I hate to belabor the point, but the plan is to keep him out of the running game.
- 46:07And he was out of the running game completely. He's 12 yards deep again. There's no force whatsoever from that triple wing formation.
- 46:14They ran to the outside and made a big game.
- 46:16What you're saying, Hank, is that Schell is the key defensive man for Pittsburgh and the Chargers have him all messed up, chasing all over the field.
- 46:23Yeah, as I say, Pittsburgh loves to play with a sledgehammer kind of attack when you stay in one formation or two.
- 46:29But when you move around, you get those people out of their normal positions and it puts a lot of pressure on them.
- 46:34Joyner is back in there now. First down at the Pittsburgh 20. Mike Thomas looking for a place to go, gets two yards to the 18.
- 46:40It wouldn't open up for him. Steve Pernes and Joe Green were in on the play defensively for Pittsburgh.
- 46:46Pittsburgh likes to, in this situation, on the 20-yard line going in, they like to put pressure on the quarterback by blitzing.
- 46:54And for that reason, it would be wise for San Diego to go back to normal formation and just let him blitz and throw one-on-one passes, especially to their tight end from his normal position on Donnie Schell.
- 47:06Muncie is in the backfield, 8.50 left in the half. Scored nine, 3-3. Second down at 8.
- 47:11Watch Joyner go outside. There's Schell soft again. They're probably going to run outside. There's Muncie running left. He cuts it back. 15-10. He's down to the 5. First and goal, San Diego.
- 47:22Thanks, guys. You said they're going to have to get that other linebacker in there. They're just killing Donnie Schell.
- 47:27Yeah, Donnie Schell is running sideways, east and west, and you might as well have him on the bench. He's your best backler, best player.
- 47:33But they got him in a position where he has no bearing whatsoever on the force. Force meaning that he comes up to make the tack. He cannot force and go sideways at the same time.
- 47:42He's out of every running play, isn't he? Exactly right, because of the motion.
- 47:46His first and goal at the 5. That was a 14-yard run by Chuck Muncie. He'll mark the ball at the 6.
- 47:52His first and goal from the Pittsburgh 6, with 8 minutes left in the half. Motion by Winslow and bounce to Muncie over the left side to the 4.
- 48:01Second and goal from there. Joe Green first to get him.
- 48:05It's fun to watch this kind of football because there's a lot of strategy involved in it.
- 48:10And of course, I'm always excited about seeing people go in motion and creating formations and creating a moment of indecision.
- 48:17And that's exactly what the San Diego Chargers are doing here tonight.
- 48:20San Diego has to win, or they are out of the playoffs. If they win, New England is out of the playoffs.
- 48:26Here's another situation. The same joiner in motion to the right.
- 48:30Now we have a timeout call by Pittsburgh.
- 48:34Hank, they probably are as confused as you have indicated with their coverage, particularly on the part of Shell, against the man in motion.
- 48:437.5 left in the half. And it's second and goal from the 4.
- 48:47For San Diego, there's a timeout on the field with a score. The Steelers 3 and the Chargers 3.
- 48:54Pittsburgh is without linebacker Dennis Winston. He has the flu. He'll not play tonight.
- 48:59Cole is hurt, but he's in there. They have Ham, Lambert, Taves, and Cole.
- 49:05Those are their only linebackers, so they try to go with the extra back and only two linebackers.
- 49:09San Diego moving down the field on them. It's second and goal from the 4.
- 49:137.5 minutes left in the half. Score tied 3-all.
- 49:17Jefferson in motion. Should be another sweep.
- 49:19And Muncie's in the backfield.
- 49:21Muncie starts outside and he is dropped for a loss on the play. Joe Green got him.
- 49:26Joe Green got him back at the 7-yard line.
- 49:28Everything was set up nicely except they didn't block Joe Green.
- 49:31And the penalty on the play. A play down.
- 49:34Off the 4-yard. Penalty flag on the field.
- 49:38And here is a motion penalty against San Diego.
- 49:42Now the way they can move the ball, I wouldn't be surprised to see Pittsburgh decline this penalty and make a third and goal from the 8-yard line.
- 49:51They should decline it because the field goal is not going to make any difference 5-yards deeper.
- 49:54It's a chip shot regardless. They ought to decline the penalty.
- 49:57Right side of the line moving before the ball. Decline.
- 50:01That is declined and it's third and goal from the 8.
- 50:04San Diego has been very good on their third down plays.
- 50:10But there's not that much room for these receivers to roll.
- 50:13Mike Thomas is in their backfield. Very good at catching the ball.
- 50:18And he joins Chuck Muncie.
- 50:21Now they've got a basic formation anticipating blitz possibly.
- 50:24There goes Jefferson in motion to the left side.
- 50:27Third and goal from the 8-yard line.
- 50:30And here with the ball. Throw into the end zone and it is incomplete.
- 50:35He tried to throw into heavy coverage to Winslow and Thomas was wide open going home.
- 50:40It wasn't anybody around Thomas.
- 50:43It was knocked down by Ron Johnson and he had some help in there.
- 50:48I saw Thomas out the corner of my eye Hank. Did he stay free for a long time?
- 50:52Well he was free. He had to be thrown. The ball had to be thrown to him quickly.
- 50:56So he could catch it and run with it.
- 50:58The longer he went the more the coverage caught up with him and that's what happened on the play.
- 51:02A 26-yard try by Ralph Benerska held by Fuller.
- 51:08The kick is good and San Diego goes back on top.
- 51:13But only by a field goal despite all that movement down the field.
- 51:167-16 remaining in the half.
- 51:19But now with the score San Diego 6 and the Steelers 3. Let's take time out.
- 51:24San Diego kept the ball 7 minutes 16 seconds.
- 51:29And they ended up with a 26-yard field goal.
- 51:32An 89-yard drive from their own 11.
- 51:35Benerska will kick it off. Larry Anderson is flanked by Greg Hawthorne and Frank Pollard.
- 51:41San Diego twice has led 3-0. Now 6-3.
- 51:47And the kick by the side wheeler is short.
- 51:50And it is down to the deep man.
- 51:53Out to the 20-yard line. To the 25. To the 30. To the 35. To the 40.
- 51:57Out to the 45-yard line for the Steelers.
- 52:00Larry Anderson with her own dove making the tackle.
- 52:04A fine kick return by Larry Anderson who had averaged 28 yards per return.
- 52:09Because that kick was low Hank and because it went right to Anderson.
- 52:13San Diego couldn't get downfield to cover it.
- 52:15Yeah he caught it on the first hop and that's very important.
- 52:18He got a good jump on the ball caught it moving straight ahead.
- 52:20And did a good job of bringing the ball back to the 45.
- 52:23With 7-0-6 left in the half.
- 52:25Steelers trailing by 3.
- 52:27T-Bell comes to the left and Lynn Swann is to the right.
- 52:30The sign in Cunningham is on the right side.
- 52:32Here's Bradshaw's first down pass.
- 52:35He is double. He is back inside the 40-yard line by Charles DeGeneres.
- 52:41San Diego ordinarily has been very good at getting to the quarterback.
- 52:4558 facts coming into this game.
- 52:51Bradshaw was just setting up.
- 52:53Looking around and he lost 6.
- 52:58And out your own dove comes in as the cornerback replacing Willie Buchanan on the left side for San Diego.
- 53:06Dove on the corner along with Williams, Edwards and Fuller the safety man.
- 53:13Second and 16 for Pittsburgh from their 39.
- 53:19And back to throw Bradshaw.
- 53:21Throws to the left sideline incomplete to Franco Harris.
- 53:24And I'm back to Bob Horn right on his tail.
- 53:28Incomplete.
- 53:30And with the kind of pressure he's got he has to throw the ball quickly, quicker than he normally likes to.
- 53:36Especially in this part of the field plus the fact that he's got to get the ball to the backs.
- 53:40And also to the tight end because of the coverage because they're already playing a pressure defense and the outside receiver was too deep.
- 53:47And that makes you want to throw to the backs and the tight end.
- 53:53After the good kick return by Anderson the Steelers haven't been able to do anything.
- 53:57They're at their own 39 and it's third down and 16.
- 54:01Bradshaw looking for long yards here.
- 54:03It falls over the middle and it is caught.
- 54:06Now incomplete. Incomplete at the 45 yard line.
- 54:09Incomplete.
- 54:11Rocky Beier tried to make a two string catch but the official the umpire looking right at him said nope.
- 54:20Fred Dean was in there at that last play.
- 54:22He was not supposed to play because of a full muscle but he was in there.
- 54:25He was a good pressure and he was really a super fast pressure.
- 54:28Here's the first point of the game.
- 54:29Craig Colquitt of Tennessee a 40 yard average.
- 54:33None blocked.
- 54:34Edwards and Fuller are the deep end.
- 54:37And Fuller is the deepest of the two.
- 54:41624 left in the half.
- 54:43San Diego will get the ball back.
- 54:45Colquitt kicks a rather high kick and deep and Fuller took it on the 14.
- 54:50He's back to the 15 and a spun down at the 19.
- 54:54San Diego will go from there.
- 54:57We have 613 remaining in the half.
- 55:00A 46 yard punt.
- 55:01A five yard return.
- 55:02San Diego has the ball.
- 55:04A pause in the action with the score.
- 55:06The Chargers 6 and the Steelers 3.
- 55:13If San Diego wins here tonight, Houston will play at Oakland Sunday.
- 55:17The two wild card teams.
- 55:18If Pittsburgh wins here tonight, New England will play at Houston next Sunday.
- 55:23The 28.
- 55:24Chargers have the ball at their own 19.
- 55:27And they lead 6-3.
- 55:28Mike Jefferson come in motion maybe to the right side.
- 55:31No, it doesn't look like he's coming this time.
- 55:32He stays in the same spot.
- 55:33Thomas straight ahead.
- 55:34Mike Thomas to the 25, to the 30 as the first down.
- 55:38He's out to his own 32.
- 55:40Mike Thomas tackled by Robin Cole.
- 55:44Thomas used to do some brilliant running for the Redskins and he hit a slump.
- 55:49But he has a great deal of capability.
- 55:52One thing you have to do going into a game from a defensive standpoint, you say,
- 55:56well what's the best thing they do?
- 55:58We have to stop what they do best.
- 56:00Going into this game, the Steelers are approached at very sound and they have to stop the passing.
- 56:05Then you say, well if they're going to beat you, they have to beat you with a way that they don't like to do.
- 56:09And that's with a running game.
- 56:10And they're doing a good job of running the ball at this stage because there's only two linebackers in the game and five defensive backs.
- 56:15Thomas over the left side.
- 56:16He works for four yards to the 35 and John Benizak tackled him.
- 56:21Now we have 520 left in the half.
- 56:24Four yards by Mike Thomas.
- 56:27511, 190 from Nevada, Las Vegas.
- 56:30I'm really impressed with the way the San Diego Chargers are running the football.
- 56:34This is the best balance we've seen them have.
- 56:36And of course it's justified with the way they're running because they have the five defensive backs in the game, as I mentioned.
- 56:41It is second down and six with Woodruff in the backfield defensively for the Steelers now.
- 56:46Motion by Jefferson.
- 56:47Look at Donnie Shell all out here by himself.
- 56:50Back to throw.
- 56:51Here as he throws.
- 56:52Caught by Winslow beyond the 45.
- 56:54First down.
- 56:55He's out at the 48.
- 56:56Right off by Ron Jackson.
- 56:57And look at Donnie Shell.
- 56:58All the way here.
- 56:59The complete opposite side of the field, right?
- 57:01Exactly right.
- 57:02And Wagner, Wagner that time had to cover.
- 57:06Wagner likes the free safety.
- 57:08And with the motion the way it is, the strong safety is covering the flanker.
- 57:14And the weak safety, normally it plays in the hole, is covering the tight end.
- 57:18So you've got different people doing different things and puts a lot of pressure on them.
- 57:22Robin Cole is in now.
- 57:24The additional linebacker on first down from the San Diego 48.
- 57:28449 left in the half.
- 57:31Here's Pouts to Mike Thomas.
- 57:33He's to midfield and dives to the Pittsburgh 49.
- 57:36He got three yards.
- 57:37Jack Lambert was there to stop him.
- 57:39On first down San Diego has 11.
- 57:41Pittsburgh has seven.
- 57:43Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS radio network.
- 57:50420 left in the half.
- 57:52Hanks Ram and Jack Fuckwee.
- 57:54The ball is at the Pittsburgh 49.
- 57:56The Chargers have it.
- 57:57The back is in there for Pittsburgh.
- 58:00Winslow starts one way, goes back the other, and Pouts is going to put it up.
- 58:04He throws and it has broken up.
- 58:06The intended receiver fell down and then Johnson got his hands on the ball,
- 58:10which was intended for Jefferson.
- 58:12Incomplete and it is third down and eighth.
- 58:16Jefferson that time was going in motion to the right side and stumbled over Ron Johnson, number 29.
- 58:22It was an innocent thing, no pass interference on the play, but that's why Jefferson wound up on the turf.
- 58:27Muncie has carried 10 times 60 yards and Thomas four times 34 yards,
- 58:34so the Chargers have rolled up 94 yards rushing.
- 58:39Third down and eighth.
- 58:40And they have a triple wing on the right side, three wide receivers on the right side.
- 58:44The pass dropped it up short and it is caught down to the 40-yard line of Pittsburgh
- 58:50for a first down by Charlie Joyner.
- 58:53He delayed getting into that pass batter and there was no one around him until Ron Johnson brought him down.
- 59:00And they are going to measure.
- 59:03That was a third down play and he didn't get the forward progress that I thought he got down around the 41.
- 59:12You need ball bearings and a knee joints to cover Joyner on that kind of a pass at that time
- 59:16because he went to the inside, got him moving, got the knees turned to the inside and broke to the outside
- 59:21and the ball was delivered right on the money.
- 59:23Beautiful play.
- 59:24First down for San Diego at the 41 of Pittsburgh.
- 59:27It's fun to watch this team play because they create a lot of excitement, a lot of sparks.
- 59:33And you talk about contemporary football, this is what we're seeing here tonight.
- 59:37How's Pouts doing, Hank?
- 59:38Well, he's 7-14 for 101.
- 59:40And there have been no turnovers in this game.
- 59:43Convert a few penalties and that's the way you like it.
- 59:47Ball at the Steeler 41-yard line.
- 59:50Burness, Vanizak, Green and Greenwood up front for the Steelers.
- 59:55Look how deep down his shell is.
- 59:59Here's Thomas, wrestle down as soon as he got the ball by Steve Burness.
- 1:00:03Henley on the play, a flag down.
- 1:00:05Ball carrier by Thomas.
- 1:00:07Well, check the flag as Thomas lost a couple.
- 1:00:11And a motion call against San Diego may be declined.
- 1:00:16As Thomas lost a couple, the left side of that line, Shields, Wilkerson, the center,
- 1:00:21Don Masekaw collapsed and Burness came blowing in there.
- 1:00:24I would sure turn it down if I were Pittsburgh.
- 1:00:29Two-fifty-seven offense, the five, seven down.
- 1:00:33Ed White was the culprit, it's declined and it's second down and 12.
- 1:00:39Thomas lost two.
- 1:00:41We have 325 remaining in the half.
- 1:00:45The score is San Diego 6 and Pittsburgh 3.
- 1:00:50You think he'll throw it, eh?
- 1:00:52I'll go way out the limb and say they're going to throw it again.
- 1:00:55Bob starts Winslow in motion.
- 1:00:59And now Jefferson goes back in motion the other direction.
- 1:01:02That time he...
- 1:01:03Here's Bob, he's going to put it up.
- 1:01:04He throws over the middle and it is caught inside the 25-yard line.
- 1:01:08And a first down to the 20.
- 1:01:10Winslow caught it in thick traffic and Woodruff knocks him down.
- 1:01:14That time, Mel Brant was covering the tight end.
- 1:01:16You see, they're creating so many different problems coverage-wise.
- 1:01:19He plays the right corner that time, they had a tip-of-the-wing formation on the right side.
- 1:01:24Donnie Shell, when the man went in motion, ran into his own guy.
- 1:01:28There was that much confusion on the coverage.
- 1:01:31First down of the Pittsburgh 20-yard line.
- 1:01:34Two-fifty remaining in the half.
- 1:01:38San Diego took over after the Pittsburgh punt.
- 1:01:44And now they're down to the Steeler 20.
- 1:01:46From our left to our right, they have Mike Thomas in the backfield to give to Thomas over the left side.
- 1:01:50Slants right to the 15-yard line.
- 1:01:53Then he's driven back.
- 1:01:55He got to the 16. He picked up four.
- 1:01:57Elsie Greenwood drove him back.
- 1:01:59I'll tell you one thing about Pittsburgh.
- 1:02:00Pittsburgh is so involved in trying to recognize what they're doing.
- 1:02:03It's a good time to run the ball, especially in the middle area.
- 1:02:06There's a big hole at the middle linebacker when they're in even spacing.
- 1:02:10And they tried to hit at that time, but it was a little too delayed.
- 1:02:14San Diego may or may not run another play before the two-minute warning.
- 1:02:18We're down to 2.05, and the 30-second clock will allow them to run it out, and they will.
- 1:02:23When we resume, they'll have the ball at the Pittsburgh 16-yard line.
- 1:02:27And it'll be second down and six for the Chargers.
- 1:02:31Two minutes left in the half.
- 1:02:32There's a timeout on the field with a score.
- 1:02:34San Diego Chargers six, Pittsburgh Steelers three.
- 1:02:39The Chargers are taking a punt at their own 19-yard line. San Diego has kept the ball for four minutes, 13 seconds.
- 1:02:45They've run ten plays.
- 1:02:47They've moved down to the Steelers 16, second and six for the Chargers, with two minutes left in the half.
- 1:02:52And San Diego on top on a score of 63.
- 1:02:55If they win, they win the championship for the division, and they make a wild-card team out of Oakland.
- 1:03:02And if they lose, they make a wild-card team out of New England, and the Chargers will be out of the picture.
- 1:03:08Here we go. Wide receivers are Joyner, Jefferson to the right, and Winslow is on a wing left.
- 1:03:15Jefferson goes left. They like to sweep. Look at the middle. Look at the middle.
- 1:03:18And here is Poutz, looking to throw, and he throws, and it's caught inside the ten-yard line by Winslow.
- 1:03:26And that's enough for a first down, as they mark the ball at the nine-yard line of Pittsburgh.
- 1:03:35The middle was very open with the runner of the pass that time.
- 1:03:38Jefferson was on the right side, went in motion to the left.
- 1:03:41It left a big hole in the middle for Winslow.
- 1:03:44He got the ball on target, first to nine on the nine.
- 1:03:47First and goal from the nine-yard line.
- 1:03:50Mike Thomas in the backfield for Poutz. Look at the middle.
- 1:03:53On first down, Thomas on a slant lap. He is wrestled down by LC Greenwood.
- 1:03:57They did a little stunt on the line, Hank, and Greenwood was in the hole.
- 1:04:01Yeah, and Jack Lambert did a good job. They had a stunt.
- 1:04:03The tackle came inside. Lambert went outside, and they stuffed the play,
- 1:04:07and did a good job and guessed right on that alignment.
- 1:04:10No gain on the play for the Chargers, and we're down to one minute left in the half.
- 1:04:16You know, one thing that San Diego really hasn't done a good job of,
- 1:04:19and that is scoring touchdowns when they get in close.
- 1:04:22Second and goal from the ten. As Thomas lost one, Poutz is going to put it up.
- 1:04:26He drops it off, fakes it short, throws it away. Incomplete, it hit the upright.
- 1:04:31The ball's dead when it does that.
- 1:04:33Forty-six seconds remaining in the half, and it'll be third and goal from the ten.
- 1:04:36And you have to be very accurate to be able to hit that upright like that.
- 1:04:39I'll say. That's what he's trying to do.
- 1:04:42Well, the Los Altos high school band is getting ready to perform here at halftime.
- 1:04:46We have forty-six seconds remaining in the half, and a third down play coming up.
- 1:04:50For San Diego, third and goal from the ten.
- 1:04:55On third down, San Diego has been able to pick up a first down four times in seven tries.
- 1:05:01And San Diego coming into this game has scored forty-eight touchdowns,
- 1:05:04sixteen by the run, thirty by the pass.
- 1:05:09Motion by Jefferson, Poutz back to throw, hands off to Thomas.
- 1:05:13Thomas is hit, and down to the seven-yard line.
- 1:05:16Booth, say the fans, it's fourth down, and they'll try another field goal.
- 1:05:19Mike Wagner came up very quickly and made the hit.
- 1:05:22Yes he did. Number twenty-three, Wagner really did a fine job of stuffing the play,
- 1:05:26and now they're in a field goal situation on fourth and seventh.
- 1:05:30Minerska has kicked field goals of thirty-three yards and twenty-six yards.
- 1:05:38And this will be another twenty-six yard try with Mike Puller holding the ball.
- 1:05:45Ralph Minerska trying to make it nine to three with only seven seconds remaining in the half.
- 1:05:50And the kick is good, and now there are only two seconds left in the half.
- 1:05:54So they not only got the points, but they've taken the time away from the Steelers with only two seconds remaining.
- 1:06:02And now with the score, San Diego nine and the Steelers three, let's take time out.
- 1:06:07It is Ralph Minerska nine and Matt Barr three.
- 1:06:11Chargers out in front, nine-three over the Steelers, two seconds left in the half.
- 1:06:15One thing that's very interesting, Jack, the run-pass ratio here with the San Diego Chargers
- 1:06:19is much different than it normally is.
- 1:06:21So far in the game they've run thirty-nine plays, twenty-four runs, fifteen passes,
- 1:06:26and they're doing a very effective job against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:06:29Here's the short kick, and it's taken at midfield.
- 1:06:32San Diego may have recovered it. They did, but time has expired.
- 1:06:37A short kick from the thirty-five out to the fifty-yard line.
- 1:06:40It was recovered by San Diego, but there are no penalties, so it's all academic.
- 1:06:45And we're at the intermission, and the fans love it as their club goes off with a six-point advantage.
- 1:06:52The gun is sounded, ending the first half with a score.
- 1:06:55San Diego Chargers nine, the Pittsburgh Steelers three.
- 1:07:01Charlie Joyner on it as the man of the year here at halftime,
- 1:07:04where the San Diego Chargers kept the ball for eighteen minutes, twenty seconds.
- 1:07:08The Steelers had the ball for eleven minutes, thirty-nine seconds.
- 1:07:12Pittsburgh received the opening kickoff, marched right down the field,
- 1:07:16but then Matt Barr missed a twenty-nine-yard field goal with nine twenty-eight remaining in the first quarter.
- 1:07:22San Diego got the first points with three minutes left in the first quarter on a thirty-three-yard field goal by Ralph Benerska,
- 1:07:29and the score was tied three-three when Matt Barr kicked one from thirty-two yards away early in the second quarter.
- 1:07:38Benerska put San Diego back on top, this time from twenty-six yards out with seven-sixteen left in the half.
- 1:07:44Then they marched down the field after getting the only point of the game from Pittsburgh.
- 1:07:48The Chargers went to work, a pass to Winslow, a pass to Joyner, another to Winslow,
- 1:07:52a run by Thomas, a pass to Winslow, and a twenty-six-yard field goal by Benerska.
- 1:07:58He's kicked two of twenty-six, one of thirty-three, and one field goal by Matt Barr,
- 1:08:03and that gives us all the points that we have here in the first half.
- 1:08:06The Salto High School band is performing at halftime.
- 1:08:09The score is nine to three here at the intermission with the Chargers on top,
- 1:08:12and we'll be back with Brent Musburger in just one moment.
- 1:08:18San Diego leads it to the half by the score of nine to three, Brent Musburger.
- 1:08:21I'm sure you'll agree that my partner, Hank Strand, has really put his finger on the key elements strategically here
- 1:08:27with the chasing around on the part of Donnie Shell.
- 1:08:30Take it away, Brent. Nice to hear from you again.
- 1:08:32All right, Jack, thank you very much, and that certainly is a key part of that game unfolding tonight in San Diego.
- 1:08:36We've got a late word now that Ron Earhart has re-signed a contract as coach of the New England Patriots,
- 1:08:42and of course the sidebar to that story is the fact that all of the Patriots are watching and listening to this game ever so closely tonight,
- 1:08:49because if Pittsburgh can come back in the second half and win, the Patriots are in the playoffs,
- 1:08:53and they're going down to Houston for a playoff game.
- 1:08:55But should San Diego hold on to that lead, then of course New England would be eliminated,
- 1:09:01and Oakland would be hosting Houston in the wild card game.
- 1:09:04Now whichever team wins the AFC West title will have the home field advantage all the way to the Super Bowl.
- 1:09:10Oakland and San Diego both have nine-three records in the conference, as opposed to eight-four for Buffalo and Cleveland.
- 1:09:16Should Buffalo and Cleveland play one another, Cleveland will get the home field edge because of a better record against common opponents.
- 1:09:23Now Oakland got into the playoffs with an easy win over the Giants,
- 1:09:26but there was nothing at all easy about Cleveland's victory over Cincinnati.
- 1:09:29The score was still tied. Less than two minutes to go, Ron Friedman calls it.
- 1:09:33One-twenty-nine left on the clock. Paul McDonnell will hold.
- 1:09:37It will be a twenty-two yard field goal with them. It is up, and it is good.
- 1:09:42Don Topsock puts the Browns in the lead, twenty-seven, twenty-four.
- 1:09:46And that was the final score. And you know, they say that good things come in threes,
- 1:09:50and Cleveland quarterback Brian Sype believes it.
- 1:09:52On Wednesday, I was voted to start in the Pro Bowl, which I consider to be the greatest honor that a player can receive, being recognized by peers.
- 1:10:04Then maybe that evening, my wife gave birth to a little girl. And we're talking about number three right now.
- 1:10:13Three is, of course, a division championship for the Browns.
- 1:10:16Now one thing the Browns were unanimous about yesterday, the key man in their operation is Coach Sam Rotigliano.
- 1:10:22This week could have very easily been the tightest week of preparation that I've ever been involved with.
- 1:10:29Could have been. But Sam's sense of humor and Sam's outlook on life in this game of football
- 1:10:37makes it easy for us to enjoy ourselves, even after a bitter, bitter defeat like we had up in Minnesota last week.
- 1:10:43And for that reason, Sam deserves all the credit in the world because he kept us loose enough to allow us to concentrate.
- 1:10:49Believe it or not, when you're tight, it's hard to concentrate.
- 1:10:52He kept things loose enough this week, which allowed us to prepare like we had to do.
- 1:10:56And we came into this game in a much-won situation with a lot of young people, and we could have very easily choked.
- 1:11:02Owner Art Modell agrees with his quarterback's assessment.
- 1:11:05He knows no more about the X's than those of any other coach. Probably less than some.
- 1:11:10But he sure as hell can relate to players, and they relate to him.
- 1:11:13The Bills won the Eastern Division of the AFC with a tough win over San Francisco.
- 1:11:17It was their first division title in 14 years, and were they ever happy, especially guard Reggie McKenzie.
- 1:11:22We're looking down on New York City Jets. We're looking down on the New England Patriots.
- 1:11:27And also we're looking down on Bert Jones and the Baltimore Coats. Down use counsel.
- 1:11:32It's been nine years, people. Nine years since I've been called champion.
- 1:11:36I was a champion at University of Michigan. I was a champ. He had the pro ball for the first time in nine years.
- 1:11:41I am a champion of the AFC. It's a great feeling.
- 1:11:45And Houston wrapped up a wild card spot with a victory over Minnesota.
- 1:11:48Game didn't mean anything to the Vikes, but Coach Bud Grant was still rather testy afterwards.
- 1:11:53Didn't seem to hit it off at all with the Texas media.
- 1:11:56He was asked if he thought his team would be underrated in the playoffs.
- 1:11:59Well, maybe people in your business, not the football business.
- 1:12:01Even if you're coaches, you see other teams and you can evaluate them pretty well.
- 1:12:06I don't think anybody's underestimating the Vikings or any other team in the playoffs.
- 1:12:10Okay, but how do the Oilers stack up against some of the other teams that the Vikes have played?
- 1:12:14That's not my job. You guys are the prognosticators and the rankers and the raiders, not, I'm just a coach.
- 1:12:20Tommy Kramer broke the passing record. I never said about Francis.
- 1:12:23How much more aware of how the boys keep it here?
- 1:12:26Well, you guys make comparisons. You sit upstairs. I mean, he broke Francis.
- 1:12:30There was a lot of Francis' record last year in terms of the number of, you know,
- 1:12:33passing and the placement and what the yardage and whatnot.
- 1:12:36But you people, I get paid for that. I get paid for coaching, not analyzing and predicting.
- 1:12:41But as a coach, how do you compare the two?
- 1:12:43I don't. What in my opinion? I don't do that.
- 1:12:46I think we got the message. A couple of AFC notes.
- 1:12:48Seattle coach Jack Becerra got a new contract. Kansas City beat Baltimore yesterday.
- 1:12:52No big story there, except that less than 17,000 fans showed up for that game for the second year in a row.
- 1:12:58Baltimore will have the lowest attendance in the league,
- 1:13:00and the Colts will probably be the next team to go shopping for a new stadium in some other city.
- 1:13:05Back with a look at the NFC playoffs in just a moment.
- 1:13:08Alice needed at least a 25-point victory over Philadelphia yesterday to win the NFC Eastern Division title,
- 1:13:14and for a while it looked like they were going to make it.
- 1:13:17Behind quarterback Danny White, the Cowboys had a 35-10 lead at one point in the second half.
- 1:13:22But according to White, the Cowboys were not thinking about those 25 points.
- 1:13:25Nobody wanted to even pretend that we would beat them by 25.
- 1:13:29And so we were just concentrating on winning the game.
- 1:13:33And you never know what Coach Lattery's mind.
- 1:13:35You know, our game plan was a very typical game plan.
- 1:13:37You know, we always have a lot of pass plays and reverses and things, yeah, but you know, it's up to him as to whether we use them or not.
- 1:13:44In any case, the Eagles lost the game 35-27, but they're still celebrating the division championship.
- 1:13:50And Eagle Coach Dick Vermeel is undismayed by the fact that it took a tiebreaker to decide the champion.
- 1:13:55I now know how Tom Radry felt last year at the same time.
- 1:13:59We had the same records last year, and they wanted a tiebreaker, and they considered themselves champions.
- 1:14:05And therefore I would have to say that in representing the Eagles, we consider ourselves champions.
- 1:14:10The Rams beat Atlanta in overtime on a corral field goal.
- 1:14:13Big day for LA Coach Ray Malavece.
- 1:14:15Not only did he get the victory, he got a new three-year contract.
- 1:14:18It's been a pleasure to be here. They've been very fair to me, and I've been here a long time.
- 1:14:22And I'm very fortunate to have a football team like this and have the coaching staff and the caliber of people that I have.
- 1:14:29And I feel very fortunate to be in Los Angeles.
- 1:14:32I think it's a great sports town, and all we want to do is go on and win.
- 1:14:36So the playoffs are set now in the NFC.
- 1:14:38It'll be Los Angeles at Dallas in the wild card game.
- 1:14:41And in spite of the loss, Atlanta retains a home field advantage for the rest of the playoffs.
- 1:14:45Back with more in a moment.
- 1:14:47San Diego leads Pittsburgh 9-3.
- 1:14:50And of course if that holds up, New England would be eliminated.
- 1:14:53And if not, should the Steelers come on back, then the Patriots are going to wind up in the playoffs after all.
- 1:14:59And they would head on down to Houston for a game.
- 1:15:02And so Jack Buck and Hank Stramm, you know it's rather dangerous to let Pittsburgh stay in a game like this.
- 1:15:07San Diego has moved the ball up and down the field.
- 1:15:10But Jack, as Hank has pointed out, the Chargers have been unable to get the ball into the end zone.
- 1:15:14And that could come back to haunt them.
- 1:15:16Yeah, that really can be a problem because we've seen them play so many times, Brent,
- 1:15:21and they do a great job of moving the ball up and down the field.
- 1:15:24And I think one of the reasons they don't get the ball into the end zone
- 1:15:27is to try to bring it in with just a one-back kind of offense.
- 1:15:30I think they'd be much more effective in close to use two running backs, one tight end.
- 1:15:34In a normal situation, I think they'd be much better.
- 1:15:36I think they might switch to that, Hank.
- 1:15:38I had that same observation, particularly that one time when they were down around the five-yard line,
- 1:15:41they could have used the extra blocker.
- 1:15:43Oh, no question about that, and they've got people who do such an excellent job at that.
- 1:15:47And I think Muncie can be so effective with another back-in-the-back deal in that area
- 1:15:51because he's so big and strong, and he really makes things happen.
- 1:15:54You know, at 6'3", 235, he should be able to stuff it in there some way.
- 1:15:58And Hank, that middle has been open on that stealer defense all night long.
- 1:16:01You've been pointing it out.
- 1:16:03I think, I really think that we'll see more of that in the second half,
- 1:16:06and it'll be interesting to see, Brent, whether the Pittsburgh Steelers elect to stay with the five-defensive backs
- 1:16:11and only two linemen, if they do, why I think the San Diego Chargers will be successful again
- 1:16:16running the ball in the second half.
- 1:16:18Should be a good second half, Jack.
- 1:16:19Yeah, we've got to go, Brent.
- 1:16:20Thanks for the visit here, and we'll be talking to you next Sunday.
- 1:16:24Talk to you then.
- 1:16:25Both teams back on the field once again.
- 1:16:27The score at halftime is San Diego Chargers 9, Pittsburgh Steelers 3.
- 1:16:34It's all on the line here for San Diego.
- 1:16:36I guess you could say it's all on the pass line for San Diego,
- 1:16:39where they put the ball up into the air.
- 1:16:41Hank, there is one turnover at the end of the game, meaningless on that on-side kick.
- 1:16:44San Diego recovered it, but the Chargers are piling up some yards.
- 1:16:47Yeah, they're making a lot of yardage, 226 to 101,
- 1:16:50but it always concerned me when you move up and down the field and you don't get touchdowns,
- 1:16:54you did get three points.
- 1:16:55You know, with the score 9-3, the Pittsburgh Steelers are very, very much in their football game,
- 1:17:00and anything can happen.
- 1:17:02There was only one punt in the first half.
- 1:17:04That was by Colquitt of the Steelers for 48 yards.
- 1:17:08And Brad Shaw's 5 out of 9.
- 1:17:12Spouts is 9 out of 19.
- 1:17:14There have been no interceptions in the game.
- 1:17:16Muncie had a rush for 56 yards.
- 1:17:19Thomas for 39.
- 1:17:20Harris 20 yards.
- 1:17:21Blyer 13, Blyer's final game in the National Football League.
- 1:17:25Matt Bahr, who kicked a 32-yard field goal for the only Steelers points,
- 1:17:29a kickoff to the Chargers without field goals by Rolf Frunerska, 26, 26, and 33 yards.
- 1:17:35Bernard Jackson is deep along with Hank Power for the Chargers.
- 1:17:39Capacity crowd about 55,000 on hand.
- 1:17:42It never seems that the big high school man is that Los Altos high school man.
- 1:17:46There must be everybody in the school playing an instrument.
- 1:17:49Here we go with the final 30 minutes in the regular season.
- 1:17:52And we'll see what kind of an adjustment the Pittsburgh Steelers make at halftime
- 1:17:56to try to stop the San Diego Chargers.
- 1:17:58Here from the 3-yard line is Jackson to the 10, running left to the 15,
- 1:18:02and he's out to the 18-yard line.
- 1:18:04Tim Moriarty downfield again to make the Steelers tackle,
- 1:18:07and Jackson doesn't give you the blazing speed that a good many other kick return men show.
- 1:18:11No, but he didn't have much of a chance to express any kind of speed that time
- 1:18:15because they did a good job of covering on the play,
- 1:18:18and number 41 specifically really did a good job of making the tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:18:25Tom Moriarty who played a ball in green.
- 1:18:28The ball is at the 18 of San Diego.
- 1:18:30They send Joyner and Jefferson to the right.
- 1:18:33Winslow is on a wing left, and in the backfield is Chuck Muncie.
- 1:18:37Winslow sprints off to the left side in motion, and Fouts are going to put it up on first down,
- 1:18:41looks over the middle, throws to the left, deep wide open.
- 1:18:44Off by Winslow, he might score.
- 1:18:4645-40, 35-30, hauled down from behind, inside the 25, down to the 23, and Mel Blount caught him.
- 1:18:53That time he was in motion, came across to the inside, went back to the outside.
- 1:18:58Mel Blount that time was covering the big tight end, one for one.
- 1:19:02Confusion on the coverage, very obviously.
- 1:19:04He ran right by Blount, was wide open, got the ball to him right on the money,
- 1:19:08and a big play in the first play of the game, the first play of the second half.
- 1:19:12He was flat-footed when he caught the ball, Hank.
- 1:19:14Otherwise, had he been moving downfield, he'd have run away from everybody.
- 1:19:17That was good for 59 yards, and very good for distance.
- 1:19:24Big play down to the 23-yard line up Pittsburgh for San Diego.
- 1:19:28Boy, that one hurt New England, which is rooting for the Steelers.
- 1:19:31Watch somebody else go in motion to the left.
- 1:19:33Jefferson goes to the left, and on first down, Fouts on a delay.
- 1:19:37Hands it off to Muncie, he's inside the 20-yard line, and he gets down at the 19.
- 1:19:44And he picked up four yards.
- 1:19:46The crowd got excited because it looked like it was going to make more yards,
- 1:19:50but Robin Cole came in and made the hit.
- 1:19:52In a four-yard.
- 1:19:54The important thing is here again, as I mentioned, the San Diego Chargers,
- 1:19:58they get in there this close with as many big plays as they make.
- 1:20:01They've got to be able to get it out, suck it up, and get in there,
- 1:20:04into that end zone, get seven points instead of just three.
- 1:20:07Woodruff is in as the extra back for the Steelers.
- 1:20:11Look at that middle, second and sixth.
- 1:20:13Here's Fouts going to put it off.
- 1:20:15He looks and throws short, incomplete.
- 1:20:17There was coverage on Muncie out there by Jack Hamm.
- 1:20:20You don't fool Jack Hamm very often.
- 1:20:22He tried to swing it out to Muncie, incomplete, third and sixth.
- 1:20:25Yeah, they had a pretty good chance to get Jefferson in the middle area,
- 1:20:28but he was looking at Muncie all the way,
- 1:20:30trying to get it on him in a one-on-one situation with Hamm,
- 1:20:33and didn't succeed and doing a good job of the play.
- 1:20:37And McCrary comes out, and Mike Thomas comes into the lineup
- 1:20:41with Chuck Muncie in the backfield.
- 1:20:44Ball at the 19 of Pittsburgh.
- 1:20:46They still don't have a tight end.
- 1:20:48They've got three wide receivers.
- 1:20:50Third and sixth.
- 1:20:53Straight back to throw.
- 1:20:55Joyner, Joyner.
- 1:20:56Joyner throws into the end zone, and it's caught.
- 1:20:59First and goal at the five.
- 1:21:01It was caught by Tom, by the wide receiver Jefferson.
- 1:21:05He was bumped out of bounds at the five, and it's first and goal.
- 1:21:10Ron Johnson got him, but he couldn't.
- 1:21:12He rolled him out of bounds, and it's first and goal from the five.
- 1:21:15Beautiful catch that time, but John Jefferson was in the end zone
- 1:21:19all by himself that time, Jack.
- 1:21:21Nobody around him.
- 1:21:22He came out to the five-yard line and caught that ball.
- 1:21:25First and goal.
- 1:21:27That was on third and sixth.
- 1:21:28Boy, they've completed a lot of third down back.
- 1:21:30This would be a good time to say,
- 1:21:31listen, we're on the five-yard line.
- 1:21:33We're going to stuff it in there.
- 1:21:34We're going to run it in there.
- 1:21:35Here they go.
- 1:21:36Muncie.
- 1:21:37A flag goes down, and Muncie gets to the three.
- 1:21:40A flag has been thrown.
- 1:21:43Very few penalties.
- 1:21:44None against Pittsburgh so far in this game.
- 1:21:46Three against San Diego.
- 1:21:48It was first and goal from the four,
- 1:21:50and the rep regime tells us that it is holding against San Diego.
- 1:21:55That's a killer.
- 1:21:56Boy, that's murder, isn't it?
- 1:21:59You know, as big as those offensive linemen are, Billy Shields weighs 275.
- 1:22:04Wilkerson weighs 262.
- 1:22:05Mason weighs 253.
- 1:22:08White weighs 271.
- 1:22:10Audick, you think they would be able to blow somebody off a lot of scrimmage
- 1:22:13and not be holding in the process?
- 1:22:15Number 56, 10-yard, so far down.
- 1:22:19Shields, of all people, 68, 275.
- 1:22:22You wouldn't think he'd have to hold, would you?
- 1:22:24Billy Shields out of Georgia Tech.
- 1:22:26The ball is at the 14.
- 1:22:31San Diego's kept the ball for two minutes here at the outset of the third quarter.
- 1:22:35Well, we'll see if Jefferson goes in motion to the right side here.
- 1:22:38Here he goes.
- 1:22:39And they like to run outside.
- 1:22:40Look at that middle.
- 1:22:41On first down, Fouts gives the ball to Muncie, running right, trying to get outside.
- 1:22:45He's to the 10-yard line, inside the 10, and out of bounds.
- 1:22:49Bumped out by Dwayne Woodruff.
- 1:22:52Anyone out of bounds at the Pittsburgh 7.
- 1:22:56You know, they consistently, from that triple-wing formation, run outside.
- 1:22:59They pull the left guard on the play.
- 1:23:01Muncie does a good job of getting to the outside,
- 1:23:03but they also could be able to run inside between the tackles from that same formation.
- 1:23:09They're so concerned about stopping the sweep now.
- 1:23:11I'm talking about Pittsburgh.
- 1:23:12He ought to be able to, from that same formation, same motion,
- 1:23:15pop it up the middle and make a big game.
- 1:23:17Muncie can throw the ball, too, can't he?
- 1:23:18Yes, he can.
- 1:23:19The ball is at the 7-yard line.
- 1:23:21Up the stealer is actually 7 1⁄2 yards away.
- 1:23:25Here he comes in motion again.
- 1:23:26Jefferson to run up.
- 1:23:28I'm sorry, Jack.
- 1:23:30Here we go with Fouts.
- 1:23:31He jumps it off to Muncie.
- 1:23:32Caught it at the 5.
- 1:23:33He's hitting down at the 1.
- 1:23:36He's at the 1.
- 1:23:37That'll be third and goal.
- 1:23:39Lambert with the tackle saves the touchdown.
- 1:23:44Is that what you were expecting, Hank?
- 1:23:46I thought, from that formation, they've been doing things outside.
- 1:23:49I thought sometime along in here they're going to run inside from that same formation
- 1:23:53because Pittsburgh is really concerned about the formation and stopping the sweep.
- 1:23:57And for that reason, something inside would be very effective.
- 1:23:59Obviously, that play was very effective,
- 1:24:01and they did a good job of taking the ball down to the 1.
- 1:24:03But they've got to stuff it in there.
- 1:24:05They've got to get tough and blow that ball into the end.
- 1:24:07So they've got two yards to get, two downs to get one yard.
- 1:24:10Ball's at the 1, third and goal.
- 1:24:12I information Thomas and Muncie.
- 1:24:14The give is to Muncie Hurdle.
- 1:24:16And he got it.
- 1:24:18Did not get over.
- 1:24:19Did not get over.
- 1:24:21Fourth down.
- 1:24:22Muncie did not get over.
- 1:24:24It is fourth down.
- 1:24:26The San Diego players thought he had gotten in there,
- 1:24:28but none of the officials gave him the touchdown.
- 1:24:31The guys in the white shirt say touchdown,
- 1:24:33but the guys in the black and white shirt say no dice.
- 1:24:36And now San Diego leading 9-3.
- 1:24:38They have a big decision to make, Hank.
- 1:24:40And it looks like they're going to go for the core,
- 1:24:42the touchdown, rather than the field goal.
- 1:24:44Well, it's just less than a yard.
- 1:24:46And the rule of thumb, I've said so many times,
- 1:24:48if it's less than a yard, if you can't make less than a yard
- 1:24:50with a big strong line like they have,
- 1:24:52you shouldn't win anyhow.
- 1:24:54They ought to go for it, and they should be able to make a touchdown.
- 1:24:56They said they're going for the three-pointer.
- 1:24:58They're going to go for it, and they should be able to make it.
- 1:25:00Split backs the ball right at the goal line.
- 1:25:02Fouts big enough to sneak the ball.
- 1:25:04He sneaks it and gets over.
- 1:25:07Touchdown San Diego, the first of the night,
- 1:25:11and that makes it 15-3.
- 1:25:14We have 11-32 remaining in the third quarter,
- 1:25:21and that's our first touchdown of the night.
- 1:25:23Dumb drive, a long pass to Winslow on the first play from Skrimmage.
- 1:25:27A pass to Jefferson at the five, made it first and goal.
- 1:25:30They overcame a holding call.
- 1:25:32They started from their 14 and went on in
- 1:25:35for the touchdown on the quarterback sneak.
- 1:25:38Here's the extra-point drive by Bernerska.
- 1:25:41Fuller holding.
- 1:25:42That was perfect.
- 1:25:43Fuller gets it down.
- 1:25:44The kick is good, and the New England Patriots are fading away
- 1:25:48because now San Diego has a 13-point lead with 11-32 remaining
- 1:25:55in the third quarter with a score of the Tigers 16-3.
- 1:26:00Let's take time out.
- 1:26:10Remember a year ago San Diego got in a playoff.
- 1:26:13Houston came here and without Pasqualean and without Campbell,
- 1:26:16there's Jim Reynolds in quarterback and they knocked San Diego out of it.
- 1:26:19It was a bitter pill for the team and the fans out here.
- 1:26:22They're leading 16-3 now with 11-1½ left in the third quarter.
- 1:26:26The kick by Bernerska, Larry Anderson has to chase to his left and put it on the floor,
- 1:26:31running to the 10, to the 15, east to the 20, 25, 30 yard line,
- 1:26:35and out to the 35 comes Larry Anderson with another fine return.
- 1:26:39And he was picked up by Frank Duncan, a defensive back and rather a saving tackle.
- 1:26:44As it was, Duncan, number 47, did a good job of making the tackle,
- 1:26:47or else he'd have gone for a longer distance than he did.
- 1:26:51Well, don't count the viewers out of this one, folks.
- 1:26:54You know, Hank, I think the biggest absence on the club is Stoward, don't you?
- 1:26:59Oh yeah, no question about that.
- 1:27:01You know, they have such great balance with the outside receivers.
- 1:27:04They look also good, excellent job,
- 1:27:06but you can't lose those kind of quality people and expect to be as efficient as you normally were.
- 1:27:11Red jaws, five out of nine, and he stays on the ground and gives to Franco Harris
- 1:27:16on a slam right across the 40 to the 42.
- 1:27:19Following the lucky flyer, Bob Horn made the tackle on Franco Harris.
- 1:27:23He got six, seven yards.
- 1:27:30With it all, the Steelers only trail by 13, a couple of touchdowns, and they go on tough.
- 1:27:35And of course they've done such a big play team, throwing the ball to their outside receivers,
- 1:27:39and they get back into the game quickly on many occasions,
- 1:27:41and we, this thing, as you mentioned, is a long, long way from being over.
- 1:27:45Mike Williams is out on the cornerback, Dove is playing for San Diego.
- 1:27:49They ought to be able to throw the ball in his backs the way their defense is lined up.
- 1:27:52Second down and four.
- 1:27:54Red jaws is going to put it up.
- 1:27:56He throws and it is caught over the net, but Bell, 35 down to the 30, down to the 26,
- 1:28:02a shot line at San Diego.
- 1:28:04Jerome Dove made the tackle on Theo Bell.
- 1:28:07He is no slouch in the catch of your buck.
- 1:28:10And Red jaws, he did a super job of looking left.
- 1:28:14Lucky Blair was all by himself on the left side,
- 1:28:17and then he looked left and shoot the ball inside to Theo Bell.
- 1:28:20A wonderful play by the cornerback, Terry Bradshaw.
- 1:28:23He had me looking in this direction.
- 1:28:24Yeah, he did a good job looking off the receivers.
- 1:28:27That's a 26.
- 1:28:29But he can still throw that back on a flat.
- 1:28:31The linebacker is way inside, and for that reason,
- 1:28:33he ought to be able to throw the ball to the back and let the guy run and make the nut.
- 1:28:36He's going to play.
- 1:28:37Don't think he's in a lot of racket.
- 1:28:38Pittsburgh are having trouble hearing.
- 1:28:40Bradshaw is going to put it up.
- 1:28:41There he is.
- 1:28:42First down.
- 1:28:43He looks and he throws into the end zone, and a battle for it.
- 1:28:45It is complete.
- 1:28:47Double cover, John Lynn Swan right in the corner of the end zone,
- 1:28:50just past the goal line by Buchanan and Glenn Edwards.
- 1:28:53He had a wide in for the ball of Frank O'Hara.
- 1:28:55As he looked at it, Frank O'Hara's paris was wide open again,
- 1:28:58but he didn't throw the ball through it right into the double cover.
- 1:29:00He's down to Theo.
- 1:29:01I think he tried to do the same thing.
- 1:29:03He looked off the back and the flat and tried to throw deep thinking
- 1:29:06that the defensive back would be low asleep by the actions to the left side.
- 1:29:11But they weren't, and they did a good job of staying with their people.
- 1:29:14You could tell the way that O'Hara has walked back into the dugout
- 1:29:17that he was disappointed he didn't get the bird.
- 1:29:19Back into the huddle there that he was disappointed he didn't get the ball.
- 1:29:22It's second down and 10 on the San Diego 26.
- 1:29:25Now the linebackers on the outside, they don't have the same situation
- 1:29:28they had to be trying before for the linebackers inside.
- 1:29:31Here's Bradshaw's pass again.
- 1:29:33He looks, he's rushed, he draws.
- 1:29:35The flag is down.
- 1:29:36The pass is incomplete.
- 1:29:38And we probably have holding.
- 1:29:40We probably have holding.
- 1:29:42It was in center for Rocky Gleit.
- 1:29:45And a penalty coming up against Pittsburgh the very first double of the evening.
- 1:29:52Yeah, he waited for something to happen, something to pop open.
- 1:29:54Nothing actually did.
- 1:29:56And any time you had that much time to throw you figure somebody's got to be holding.
- 1:30:04Ten yards marked off against Pittsburgh.
- 1:30:06Back to the 36.
- 1:30:08Number 74, still second down.
- 1:30:12Second down and 20.
- 1:30:14Dean is in the ball game now, number 71, the defensive end.
- 1:30:17He's an excellent pass rusher.
- 1:30:19It'll be interesting to see what kind of a job Ted Peterson, number 56,
- 1:30:22the offensive left tackle will do on Dean.
- 1:30:25Brad Dean is one of the Pro Bowlers along with Gary Johnson, along with Louis Coulter.
- 1:30:30Three of their front four are in the Pro Bowl for San Diego.
- 1:30:34And they got three wide receivers in the game.
- 1:30:37All the 36 of the Dodgers and Brad Jogs back to throw.
- 1:30:41Four-man rush, sets up throws long inside the 10.
- 1:30:45And Bill Carden at the one, first in goal, Pittsburgh.
- 1:30:49The defensive end.
- 1:30:51And 40, nice four.
- 1:30:52They're back to the play and enough will ride in the arms of Dino Bell, 35 yards.
- 1:30:57There was a white shirt around the ball, but it looked like that all the white shirts
- 1:31:00thought that the other guy was going to make the play.
- 1:31:03They were all spectators and they let Bell make the catch right in the middle of the field.
- 1:31:07And the ball now is in a one-yard line.
- 1:31:09You're right, Haggis.
- 1:31:10Alphonse and Gaston, they each thought the other was going to knock the ball down.
- 1:31:15Now we have nine minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:31:17And the Steelers trailing 16 to three, a few of boys.
- 1:31:21They're ready to go into the end zone for the first time with Sydney Thornton
- 1:31:24and Tycho Harris in the backfield.
- 1:31:26First in goal from the long.
- 1:31:28We've seen Brad Jogs throw in this kind of a spot frequently.
- 1:31:31He gives the ball to Thornton and he's hit and he lost the yard.
- 1:31:34What do you think of that? Sydney Thornton had no surge at all.
- 1:31:37And that was the way.
- 1:31:38It looked like he was running in quicksand this time.
- 1:31:41Very slow getting to the hole and by the time he got there,
- 1:31:44he was all over losing the yard in the play.
- 1:31:46Woody Lowell, the cornerback and Willie Buchanan, Mike Fuller all there.
- 1:31:52Woody Lowell, the first man to get to him.
- 1:31:56Second in goal from the two.
- 1:31:58As I indicated on first down, I've seen Brad Jogs throw that little
- 1:32:01pop pass over there, hang to the side end.
- 1:32:04He likes to play action pass. He certainly has.
- 1:32:08They have two tight ends.
- 1:32:12And it's second and goal.
- 1:32:13Here's Brad Jogs to Thornton.
- 1:32:14He walks into the end zone, touchdown.
- 1:32:17And a touchdown for the Steelers makes it 16 to nine.
- 1:32:21Leroy Jones that time was really coming across there like gangbusters.
- 1:32:24They tapped him and walked into the end zone like nobody was there.
- 1:32:28Good looking play.
- 1:32:29And that's something that the Pittsburgh Steelers love to do.
- 1:32:32They love the trap and they executed the trap perfectly on the last play.
- 1:32:37Makes it 16 to nine with 814 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:32:41And that quiets the crowd down here.
- 1:32:44Barr trying the extra point.
- 1:32:45He's kicked 37 out of 40 this year.
- 1:32:48Colquitt will hold the ball.
- 1:32:50Colquitt gets it down.
- 1:32:51Barr gets it up and it's good.
- 1:32:54And so the Steelers trail by six points with 814 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:32:59A timeout on the field with the score now.
- 1:33:01The Charger is 16.
- 1:33:02The Steelers 10.
- 1:33:04He's rammed the absence of Mike Williams on the corner for San Diego.
- 1:33:07Heard him.
- 1:33:08Theo Bell beat his replacement, Jerome Dove, a couple of times.
- 1:33:11Once on a pass to the Charger 26 and then one to the one yard line.
- 1:33:15Yes, and that happens when you have plenty of time to throw the ball.
- 1:33:19And Bradshaw did on that last drive.
- 1:33:21He didn't have much problem at all.
- 1:33:22He got sacked on one occasion.
- 1:33:24But most of the time he had good pass protection.
- 1:33:26Here's the kick and it comes down to Bernard Jackson.
- 1:33:29Took it on the one.
- 1:33:30He's to the 10, 15, 20 yard line.
- 1:33:32He is out to the 25, 26.
- 1:33:34San Diego will go from there and they trail.
- 1:33:37They lead by only six now.
- 1:33:41Larry Anderson made the tackle.
- 1:33:43All right, I'm going to the 26 yard line.
- 1:33:49Pittsburgh overcame a holding penalty.
- 1:33:51Pass to Bell to the 26.
- 1:33:53Pass to Bell to the one.
- 1:33:55And then a two yard touchdown run by Parton.
- 1:33:58Now the Chargers have to move the ball.
- 1:34:01They're at their own 26.
- 1:34:02Let's see if they send Jefferson in motion here to the right.
- 1:34:05Now they send Winslow to the right.
- 1:34:07Winslow to the right and a first down pass by Fouts.
- 1:34:09He steps up in the pocket and throws.
- 1:34:11And it's in completely.
- 1:34:12He overthrew his man and almost put it right into the hands of Donnie Shell.
- 1:34:16He tried to get it out to John Jefferson.
- 1:34:18Incomplete.
- 1:34:19Not a very good throw.
- 1:34:20No it wasn't.
- 1:34:21And Jefferson was really open in the middle area.
- 1:34:22But he just threw it over the top and it fell incomplete.
- 1:34:25Stops the clock with 7.59 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:34:29And the Chargers hanging on to a precarious 16-10 lead.
- 1:34:33We reiterate, if the Chargers lose, they're out of the playoffs.
- 1:34:37If they win, they win the title and New England is out.
- 1:34:41Five defensive backs including Woodruff for the Steelers.
- 1:34:46They're still committed to the same scheme.
- 1:34:48There goes Jefferson in motion to the left side.
- 1:34:50You see Donnie Shell.
- 1:34:51Followed by Donnie Shell and here's the running play to Muncie White.
- 1:34:53Open to the 30.
- 1:34:54And Shell came up and made a brilliant tackle at the 30 yard line.
- 1:34:58What a good tackle by Donnie Shell at the 31.
- 1:35:02That's the best thing he does and that's a great illustration of it.
- 1:35:06He did a super job in the last play.
- 1:35:08But you want to keep him out of that traffic as much as you possibly can.
- 1:35:12And really, he's so far in the game, the Chargers have done that.
- 1:35:15That was the short side of the field too, Hank.
- 1:35:17And they couldn't get Shell far enough away from the ball.
- 1:35:19That's right.
- 1:35:20Now it's third down and five.
- 1:35:22Three wide receivers including Ron Smith for San Diego.
- 1:35:27Triple wing formation on the right side.
- 1:35:29Here's Spouts throwing on third and five.
- 1:35:31Caught by Winslow.
- 1:35:32First down across to 40 and down at the 44 goes Helen.
- 1:35:36Winslow tackled by Jack Ham.
- 1:35:38I can't believe that he's 6'6", 252, only 22 years old, a two-year-old from Missouri.
- 1:35:44He runs and has the agility and quickness of a guy that's six foot even.
- 1:35:49Really, he's tremendous.
- 1:35:50And a first down.
- 1:35:526'56 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:35:56That was third down and a third down pass to Winslow.
- 1:35:59Boy, that San Diego passing attack can really tear you apart.
- 1:36:03Robin Cole is in at the linebacker spot now for the Steelers.
- 1:36:06They can match you with so many different people.
- 1:36:09There's Winslow in motion to the left this time.
- 1:36:11There's Thomas running left.
- 1:36:12Mike Thomas gets a block and is hit at the 45 and he's down at the 46.
- 1:36:17Mike Wagner, the free safety, came up, stopped the play after a two-yard gain.
- 1:36:21If you're going to have one of the two safety men force, you'd much rather have Wagner force
- 1:36:25than you would Donnie Shell because he does such a good job.
- 1:36:29Not that Wagner doesn't, but Wagner is a free safety.
- 1:36:31And with that motion like it is, he has to play the strong safety position
- 1:36:34and he doesn't play as nearly as well as Donnie Shell.
- 1:36:37Bounce is 12 out of 23, 190 yards, one touchdown on his own run.
- 1:36:44Now Winslow comes to the right and Jefferson to the left, second down and eighth.
- 1:36:48That time they had three linebackers in the game.
- 1:36:50They had Cole in there with only four defensive backs.
- 1:36:52Now they're back in the right.
- 1:36:53Throwing and broken up.
- 1:36:55Broken up by Johnson on the corner, intended for Winslow and almost intercepted.
- 1:37:00By Woodruff who made a dive for the ball.
- 1:37:03It'll be third and eighth.
- 1:37:07Tried to force that ball a little bit, Hank.
- 1:37:09Was anything else open?
- 1:37:10No, really wasn't.
- 1:37:11He tried to squeeze it in at that time and was very lucky that it wasn't intercepted.
- 1:37:15But here again, the Pittsburgh Steelers are changing a little bit.
- 1:37:20They're going with four defensive back on some occasions and five on others.
- 1:37:24They take out Jack Hamm, put JT Thomas in.
- 1:37:27They have six defensive backs on third and eighth from the 46th of San Diego.
- 1:37:32Bouch is going to put it up.
- 1:37:33Has time and throws long to the right side.
- 1:37:36Caught for a first down at the Steeler 37 by Jefferson.
- 1:37:42He's amazing in the defensive backs, including Ron Johnson.
- 1:37:46Wayne Redrup is standing there with his hands on a hit saying,
- 1:37:49how in the world do you cover him?
- 1:37:50Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 1:37:51But they got no jump at all on the ball.
- 1:37:53Wayne Redrup stood there and didn't respond to the thrown ball at all.
- 1:37:58He should have been after the ball when it was in the air,
- 1:38:01but he waited before until he caught it and then responded and made the tackle.
- 1:38:05And that was on third and eighth.
- 1:38:07And it allows San Diego to keep the ball.
- 1:38:09Chuck Muncie checks in.
- 1:38:11We have 5.45 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:38:14The Chargers lead 16 to 10.
- 1:38:16Let's see if they send Jefferson in motion here to the right.
- 1:38:18No, they send Winslow again.
- 1:38:19And here is a give to the running back.
- 1:38:21And behind the block of Winslow, he drives down near the 30-yard line.
- 1:38:27Winslow, the big guy, gave him a very good block.
- 1:38:30And L.C. Greenwood and Mike Wagner combined for the tackle,
- 1:38:33but a gain of six by Chuck Muncie.
- 1:38:35He's hanging on to the ball tonight, too.
- 1:38:37Yeah, he's doing a much better job of keeping the ball close to his side.
- 1:38:40And that's where he has a problem.
- 1:38:42He fights so hard for extra yardage, and if he's not careful,
- 1:38:45he keeps the ball away from his body.
- 1:38:47And that's when he has a fumble problem.
- 1:38:49But he's doing a good job here tonight.
- 1:38:50The ball is at the stealer 30, and it's second down and four,
- 1:38:53with 5.08 left in the third quarter.
- 1:38:56Now they got both back in the game.
- 1:38:57Here's Bounce going to put it up on second down.
- 1:38:59He throws long into the end zone, and a mix-up on the pattern and incomplete.
- 1:39:04Trying to get it into the end zone to Jefferson.
- 1:39:07That ball was, he was supposed to run a post corner, post flag,
- 1:39:11but the defense responded to the route in it with anticipation.
- 1:39:15And so Jefferson broke the route,
- 1:39:18and he had a hit in the area between the defensive backs,
- 1:39:21but it wasn't read well by the quarterback.
- 1:39:23It was an adjustment move by the part of the receiver,
- 1:39:26and they didn't take it up from the quarterback standpoint.
- 1:39:28Five minutes left in the third quarter.
- 1:39:30Boy, on third down, and here comes another third and four.
- 1:39:33San Diego has been terrific.
- 1:39:38Triple wing on the left side this time, which means three receivers.
- 1:39:40Now they send Joyner in motion right.
- 1:39:42Third down, Bounce walks the pass.
- 1:39:44The pass to the sideline is caught for a first down by Joyner.
- 1:39:48He is out of bounds at the Bishberg 17.
- 1:39:52Piece of work in it.
- 1:39:54I tell you, it's fun to see what's happening here.
- 1:39:57And on third down, San Diego picks up a first down eight times in 13 tries.
- 1:40:03You just take a look at the defensive linemen of the Bishberg Steelers.
- 1:40:06They all have their hands on their hips, walking back to the defensive huddles,
- 1:40:09scratching their head, trying to figure out what's going on in that secondary.
- 1:40:13The ball is to the Bishberg 17.
- 1:40:17That was on third down.
- 1:40:19There's a forced first down play.
- 1:40:21Wagner is out.
- 1:40:23Here's the running play.
- 1:40:24Muntry skipping left down to the 15-yard line.
- 1:40:26Knocked down at the 14.
- 1:40:28He got three.
- 1:40:29Robin Cole, JT Thomas tackled him.
- 1:40:31Steelers are playing without Mike Wagner now,
- 1:40:33and JT Thomas playing at free safety spot.
- 1:40:35I tell you, this is the first time I've seen San Diego
- 1:40:37where I really felt that maybe, maybe they have a better chance
- 1:40:40than they've ever had in the past to go all the way
- 1:40:43because they have the outstanding running now.
- 1:40:45And of course, they've got one of the great backs in the national football league, I think,
- 1:40:48and Chuck Munson, he's just coming into result,
- 1:40:50learning the system, doing a good job.
- 1:40:52They're featuring him more, and with the balance they have here tonight,
- 1:40:55they're going to be very, very difficult to handle.
- 1:40:57From the 14, here's Muncy knocked down by the middle linebacker, Lambert,
- 1:41:01for a loss of a yard.
- 1:41:03Jack Lambert was in the hole, and just as Muncy got the ball, he was whacked.
- 1:41:07The Pouts has gone over the 200-yard mark in passing here this evening,
- 1:41:11and he is 13 out of 25.
- 1:41:14And so he now has 207 yards, 4,600-plus yards in passing.
- 1:41:22But it's third down and eight.
- 1:41:25This is where they consistently falter.
- 1:41:28They don't get in for seven points.
- 1:41:30Now they get a normal formation, expecting a blitz.
- 1:41:33From the 15, Pouts are going to pass.
- 1:41:35Offset into the end zone, heavy coverage, incomplete.
- 1:41:38Fourth down.
- 1:41:39He tried to have Jefferson run under it,
- 1:41:42but covering was Mike Wagner, who was back in the lineup.
- 1:41:46And it's fourth down.
- 1:41:49Vernerska will try to get his fourth field goal of the evening.
- 1:41:56This is good from 26, 26, 33, and this one will be 33 yards.
- 1:42:06With Fuller holding the ball, the snap nice and low.
- 1:42:11Fuller got it.
- 1:42:12The kick sails and goes through.
- 1:42:14A knuckleball went right between the uprights.
- 1:42:18And now it's a nine-point advantage for San Diego.
- 1:42:25Nine-point advantage with 333 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:42:30Vernerska has kicked forward tonight.
- 1:42:32A timeout on the field with a score.
- 1:42:34San Diego 19 and the Steelers 10.
- 1:42:39Larry Anderson out of Louisiana Tech waits for the Vernerska kick.
- 1:42:44With 333 remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:42:4919 to 10, San Diego leads.
- 1:42:51A high kick.
- 1:42:52And taken by Anderson on the five, running left to the 10, 15, 20, 25 yard line.
- 1:42:57And out to the 26, a rather well-controlled kicking game by San Diego.
- 1:43:02Hank, they really walled them off over there.
- 1:43:04Yeah, they did a good job.
- 1:43:05They kicked the ball to the right, which made the back Anderson come up the left sideline.
- 1:43:10Everybody converged on him and did a good job from the coverage standpoint.
- 1:43:14It only gives them one way to go.
- 1:43:16And again, Hank Bauer downfield to make the tackle.
- 1:43:19The ball is a Pittsburgh 27, a nine-point lead.
- 1:43:23The center is Mike Webster, Ray Penny, and Tyrone McGriff of the guards.
- 1:43:27Ted Peterson and Larry Brown are the tacklers.
- 1:43:32Tight end is many coming at him.
- 1:43:33They haven't been able to get the ball to him much.
- 1:43:35Here's a quick snap and Bradshaw is going to put it up on first down.
- 1:43:38Zips it over the metal.
- 1:43:39It's caught at the 40, 45 yard line.
- 1:43:41And out to midfield is the tight end of the 45 to the 40 and out of bounds at the San Diego 38.
- 1:43:47Mike Fuller bumped him out.
- 1:43:48I guess had a hunch they were going to go to Cunningham, Hank.
- 1:43:51They let him alone all night.
- 1:43:52Well, here again, the way they're playing defensively, we've talked about it many, many times.
- 1:43:56The tight end of the back has to be open.
- 1:43:58He got the ball right on the money that time to Cunningham.
- 1:44:01And Cunningham did a super job of running down the left sideline.
- 1:44:04He got a lot more out of the play than it looked like he would.
- 1:44:06But he could do that in first and Tim.
- 1:44:08The linebackers are playing inside to try to stop the run.
- 1:44:10For that reason, the backs ought to be open or the tight end should be open downfield.
- 1:44:14The ball is at the 38 of San Diego.
- 1:44:17And on first down, running by nine.
- 1:44:20Here is a give to the running back and the play is good only to the 35.
- 1:44:24Cliff Griff, who just came in as the middle linebacker, made the tackle on Franco Harris.
- 1:44:29Franco Harris really is not busting in there like he normally used to.
- 1:44:33He looks like he's looking for a place to run.
- 1:44:35And by the time he makes a decision why everything's closed up and he's picking up two or three yards,
- 1:44:40then maybe he wouldn't be making four or five.
- 1:44:42And that makes a big difference as far as the selection for the quarterback.
- 1:44:46San Diego is still in a dangerous spot in this game.
- 1:44:50They lead by nine. Pittsburgh is at their 35-yard line.
- 1:44:54Second down and seven.
- 1:44:56There's another good opportunity to go after the tight end here or one of the backs.
- 1:44:59Here is Bradshaw throwing and it's caught inside the 35 by Cunningham.
- 1:45:04And he is brought down at the 26 and that's going to be a first down.
- 1:45:08Boy, he's tough to tackle. It's 247 pounds.
- 1:45:11Woody Low brought him down.
- 1:45:14Another first down for Pittsburgh.
- 1:45:16Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS radio network.
- 1:45:20This is WNAS Yankton, South Dakota. The time is 10 o'clock.
- 1:45:27The ball is now resting at the San Diego 27-yard line.
- 1:45:33One-fifty-five left in the third quarter. San Diego leading 19 to 10.
- 1:45:37First down Steelers.
- 1:45:39They're doing a good job of holding Smith up at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:45:44Same thing again. Same thing again this time.
- 1:45:47Here's Thornton and he is tackled after going to the 25. Got two yards.
- 1:45:52Ray Preston got him.
- 1:45:53I thought they were changing the play and were going to change from a run to a pass.
- 1:45:57The back would have been open on the play the way the coverage was.
- 1:46:01Thornton good over two yards.
- 1:46:05Now we have one-twenty remaining in the third quarter.
- 1:46:10Second down and eight from the 25.
- 1:46:13Swan is to the right. Theo Bell is to the left.
- 1:46:17Thornton in the backfield with Harris. Cunningham the tight end. Grossman hasn't played tonight.
- 1:46:21Here is a quick toss to Franco Harris trying to get outside. Ridden down from behind.
- 1:46:26And a flag goes down.
- 1:46:29Harris was tackled at the San Diego 23.
- 1:46:32And a penalty Leroy Jones really showed great speed catching him from behind.
- 1:46:37Franco Harris and holding against Pittsburgh.
- 1:46:41Franco Harris at this stage of his career is not fast enough to run that kind of a play.
- 1:46:45Jack you need outstanding speed and quickness to get outside on that kind of a toss.
- 1:46:49And Franco Harris really doesn't have it.
- 1:46:54And a foot down at the 35.
- 1:47:02Larry Brown the right tackle is holding.
- 1:47:05And it's second down and 18 from the San Diego 35.
- 1:47:16Scott Perry is in as the extra defensive back now for San Diego.
- 1:47:21Three wide receivers for Pittsburgh and Bradshaw back to throw.
- 1:47:25Drops it off short. It's caught by Thornton at the 25.
- 1:47:28He is down to the 20 yard line.
- 1:47:30And it's going to be a third down play. Third down and four.
- 1:47:35That's one thing that Terry hasn't done a whole lot of.
- 1:47:38He likes to get the ball downfield so much.
- 1:47:40And justifiably so because he's got those great outside receivers.
- 1:47:43But the linebackers they know that. They try to get good delt to help the defensive backs.
- 1:47:48And for that reason the backs are wide open like he was on that last play.
- 1:47:52Third down and four at the 20 yard line.
- 1:47:58Third down Pittsburgh has picked up a first down only twice in five tries.
- 1:48:04Bradshaw is going to throw for it.
- 1:48:06Looks throws and it's incomplete inside the 10 yard line.
- 1:48:10He whistled the ball off the fingertips of Franco Harris right down the middle.
- 1:48:14Incomplete. That's a little bit too high. Had he thrown a little bit lower he had a chance.
- 1:48:19Or had he waited a little bit longer he would just start to pop clean beyond the linebackers.
- 1:48:24So the same thing. Cliff Griff the linebacker was with him.
- 1:48:27Had Bradshaw been able to hold it for about one more count.
- 1:48:30Harris was about to break clean and now trailing by nine.
- 1:48:34Pittsburgh is going to pass up the field goal try.
- 1:48:38It's fourth and fourth at 20.
- 1:48:42At the San Diego 20.
- 1:48:44Oh hold your breath back there in New England.
- 1:48:48Five defensive backs for San Diego the fans on their feet.
- 1:48:52And Bradshaw needs four yards to keep the ball.
- 1:48:55A short drop now a deep drop he looks he throws and it is incomplete at the 15 yard line.
- 1:49:01Broken up by Woody Lowe intended for Thornton.
- 1:49:05Incomplete the ball goes to San Diego.
- 1:49:08They got the match they wanted. Woody Lowe that time number 51 however.
- 1:49:12Rows to the occasion. Covered Thornton in the flat knocked the ball down.
- 1:49:17And the Pittsburgh Steelers are out of business.
- 1:49:20We have only ten seconds left in the third quarter with a score.
- 1:49:25With a score. San Diego 19 the Steelers 10. Let's take time out.
- 1:49:30The place the Keebler Company Denver.
- 1:49:34Hey Bill our main cracker line is down here in Denver.
- 1:49:38Oh now that line makes 720,000 crackers an hour.
- 1:49:41It sure does and you people in Chicago have the only part to fix it.
- 1:49:45It'll be there tomorrow on News Express Mail Service.
- 1:49:48Overnight Express Mail Service delivers.
- 1:49:51Hey the part's here let's get back to work.
- 1:49:54Express Mail Next Day Service overnight from over 2,000 post offices we deliver.
- 1:49:59Sponsored by your postal service.
- 1:50:02Thanks Ram and I are puzzled as to why the Steelers failing by nine would pass up.
- 1:50:08A field goal try of 37 yards and go for a first down or a touchdown on fourth and fourth.
- 1:50:14Yeah they had to come up with ten points in this game.
- 1:50:17One over the other and as long as you're that close you ought to try for a three.
- 1:50:21And then come back the next time and then you have to go for the seven if that score is still the same.
- 1:50:25Hard to understand it. Yep surprised at that.
- 1:50:27San Diego's at their 20 yard line and on first down Pouch is going to put it up.
- 1:50:31He looks dumps it off short and it's caught.
- 1:50:34And out to the 24 yard line to Greg McCrary the tight end.
- 1:50:38A pick up of four yards and that'll mark the end of the third quarter.
- 1:50:41Second and sixth from their own 24 facing San Diego when we start the final 15 minutes of the game.
- 1:50:47And that's the end of the third quarter with a score.
- 1:50:50San Diego 19-5 for 10.
- 1:50:53San Diego the fans raising heck here.
- 1:50:5615 minutes to go the Tigers lead 19 to 10.
- 1:50:59Heck we better go back to that other play.
- 1:51:02Here is Pittsburgh with the ball at the 24th and for nine points behind.
- 1:51:07And they passed up the field goal drive.
- 1:51:09Yeah it's hard for me to understand why they did that because as I mentioned earlier.
- 1:51:12They've got to get ten points to get back in the game.
- 1:51:15And it doesn't make any difference when you get which of the two the three or the seven.
- 1:51:18But when you get down there that close you've got to come away with at least three.
- 1:51:21And then hope to get the seven the next time.
- 1:51:24Second down and sixth from their own 24 for San Diego with Muncie in the backfield.
- 1:51:30On second down to give to Muncie outside right.
- 1:51:33He's to the 25 he is to the 30.
- 1:51:36He got a first down with hard work.
- 1:51:38A first down for Muncie and San Diego if they give him the forward progress I thought he had.
- 1:51:44First down Wagner and Lambert with the tacklers.
- 1:51:48And then the San Diego has tied a club record with four field goals here tonight.
- 1:51:58Once he came out to the 30 because of the running so much the Steelers are now playing with four defensive backs and three linebackers.
- 1:52:05Coles in the game instead of the defense of back.
- 1:52:08Lidrup on first down.
- 1:52:11Here is a gift to Muncie.
- 1:52:14He's got four yards out to the 34 and now has run 17 times 86 yards.
- 1:52:22And it was Gary Dunn the tackler for the Steelers.
- 1:52:29They gave Muncie forward progress out to the 35 yard line five yards.
- 1:52:37Now Muncie is out and Thomas is in 14 20 remaining in the game.
- 1:52:41San Diego leading by nine 19 to 10.
- 1:52:44Still have the three linebackers in the game instead of the five defensive backs.
- 1:52:48There you see Shell he's out of business.
- 1:52:50Second and five. Lidrup put it up and there's the pass and it's caught short out to the 35 yard line and to the 36.
- 1:52:57And a mild game by Winslow tackled by Ron Johnson.
- 1:53:01It'll be third down and four.
- 1:53:03Ron Johnson really did a good job of coming up and being under control was in a good tackling position.
- 1:53:08Winslow tried to give him a little juk inside and outside but didn't succeed.
- 1:53:12And then he finally got help. I'm talking about Johnson from down a shell number 31.
- 1:53:17Well this is where San Diego has been terrific tonight.
- 1:53:20Third down plays and they have third and four from their own 36 yard line.
- 1:53:26Well you got Shell looking in motion this time again with Jefferson.
- 1:53:29He's going to put it up. He looks, drops it off short.
- 1:53:32It's caught first down out to the 45 and the players stopped at the 46.
- 1:53:36How in the world do you stop Winslow on that kind of a pass play?
- 1:53:40That's third and four.
- 1:53:44They keep the people around. You don't know where they're going to come from.
- 1:53:48They dazzle you with formation and motion.
- 1:53:50And they're not dropping the ball Hank.
- 1:53:52No and of course they have no reason to. The ball is right on the money.
- 1:53:55Now they go in. Now Cole comes in.
- 1:53:57Now they go back with the three linebackers and four defensive linemen and four defensive backs
- 1:54:03anticipating, anticipating the run.
- 1:54:06Muncie is back in there. The ball is at the San Diego 46.
- 1:54:09They're grinding it out on this drive.
- 1:54:11Muncie runs right, cuts back, is hit.
- 1:54:13He gained only about a yard or two over the right side in the arms of Jack Hamm.
- 1:54:19From that formation I've mentioned it several times, the middle, the middle looks like it would be very vulnerable.
- 1:54:25Talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers are so concerned about stopping the outside from that formation.
- 1:54:30The middle linebacker is very deep, Jack Lambert, and for that reason they ought to be able to do some work inside.
- 1:54:36Muncie out, Thomas in. 12-20 left in the game. San Diego leading 19-10.
- 1:54:41Five defensive backs for Pittsburgh.
- 1:54:44On the obvious passing situation, there's Winslow going to the right side.
- 1:54:48Jeffers will come back here. There he goes. There you see Donnie Shell.
- 1:54:52And here is Poutz under the lid of Mike Thomas to midfield.
- 1:54:55He is down inside the 45. He gets the first down.
- 1:54:59Down there the 43 yard line.
- 1:55:02It's another first down for San Diego on the draw to Mike Thomas.
- 1:55:06Yeah, and he popped that nice and clean right up the middle and that's a good area to hit.
- 1:55:10Because of the way they are so concerned about the people going sideways in motion and worried about their coverage.
- 1:55:17Boy, if San Diego hangs on to this ball, Hank, and there's 11-35 left in the game, they lead by nine.
- 1:55:23And any kind of points, including a field goal, will really put them in great shape.
- 1:55:27And not only that, they'll kill the clock the way they're moving it now.
- 1:55:30Winslow has caught nine passes, 147 yards. Joiners caught three, Jefferson two.
- 1:55:36Played down on the play.
- 1:55:38Here's Hank Fowler in the game and the running play to Mike Thomas carries to the 40 and a play goes down.
- 1:55:43Mel Blunt was the tackler.
- 1:55:45In a three yard penalty play on the play.
- 1:55:48It was first down. Offside, Pittsburgh. That'll make it first and five.
- 1:55:55That's the 38.
- 1:56:07Referee Jim Tunney marks off the yardage.
- 1:56:10Enforcement defense, number 75, still first down.
- 1:56:17With Joe Green lined up offside.
- 1:56:20Coach.
- 1:56:21Greg McCrary, the tight end, is back in first and five, San Diego.
- 1:56:28Joyner and Jefferson come left. Winslow is on a wing.
- 1:56:33McCrary, the tight end on the right side and timeout called by the quarterback, Dan Fowl.
- 1:56:39We have 11-17 remaining in the game. San Diego has the ball.
- 1:56:43They have first and five at the Pittsburgh 38. And with the score, San Diego 19, Pittsburgh 10.
- 1:56:49Let's take timeout.
- 1:56:51If San Diego wins here tonight, they'll be the champion of the division.
- 1:56:56They'll make a wild card team out of Oakland.
- 1:56:59They will eliminate New England from the playoffs and Houston will play out Oakland next Sunday.
- 1:57:04Meanwhile, we have Los Angeles playing at Dallas on Sunday and CBS Radio will cover both games for you.
- 1:57:12The date will be the 28th.
- 1:57:15Merry Christmas, happy holidays to all of our servicemen and women tuned in on American Forces Radio.
- 1:57:20First and five, San Diego at the Pittsburgh 38, motion by Jefferson.
- 1:57:24And a give to Mike Thomas. He's going to throw the ball down field and it is incomplete at the 15-yard line.
- 1:57:32Charlie Joyner says, I caught it. The field judge said, no, you didn't, sir.
- 1:57:36No blunt covering and it was a dangerous pass thrown by Mike Thomas.
- 1:57:41I really thought from this angle that he caught it, but evidently he did not because the official was right on the scene and called it immediately.
- 1:57:49Oh, yeah, very obviously looking at the replay he did. He was way short.
- 1:57:53Thomas pass incomplete on first down and it's second and five.
- 1:58:01The ball still at the Pittsburgh 38 with 11-11 left in the game.
- 1:58:06Bounce under center, motion by Winslow. The give to Mike Thomas picks his way up the middle.
- 1:58:11A flag goes down and Thomas is down at the 26-yard line.
- 1:58:15And we very likely have holding called by the umpire against San Diego.
- 1:58:20A.T. Thomas came up and made the tackle on Mike Thomas.
- 1:58:24And a penalty call against San Diego.
- 1:58:27The complexity of the game has changed tremendously early. We didn't get many penalties at all.
- 1:58:32And now suddenly we're getting a lot of them and the officials evidently are detecting some holding that they didn't see early in the game because the technique has to be the same.
- 1:58:43Holding 62 off and still second down.
- 1:58:47John Masek, the center, was holding.
- 1:58:50I think, you know, it was first and five and they got cute with the pass by Mike Thomas. There was no need for that.
- 1:58:55No, exactly right. And the last time we saw them play they ran an option play. Remember? And that was intercepted.
- 1:59:0111-06 remaining in the game. Second down and 15 now at the 48 of Pittsburgh.
- 1:59:08I don't know why you let anybody else throw the ball when you have the best passer, one of the best passers in the league in fouls.
- 1:59:13Second down. Motion by Jefferson. Fouls back to throw. Now he delays it to Thomas. Thomas is hit and dropped at the 46.
- 1:59:20It'll be third down along. Third and 13. Joe Green made the tackle.
- 1:59:24Tackle by number 75, Joe Green.
- 1:59:27Third down and 13 for San Diego.
- 1:59:30And that's the only one thing, Schell is going to be a very tired player after this contest.
- 1:59:33He's never run so much in his life and never really accomplished very much because he's going sideways all the time.
- 1:59:39Balls at the Pittsburgh 46.
- 1:59:41And I mean that as a compliment to him because they're doing that to keep him out of the play because he is such an outstanding defensive player.
- 1:59:47Joiner, Jefferson Smith. All wide receivers for San Diego. Third and 13. Fouts puts it up to the sideline into heavy coverage.
- 1:59:54Incomplete and a great defensive play was made against Jefferson by Mike Wagner. And now Pittsburgh will get the ball.
- 2:00:00And I'll bet when Pittsburgh gets the ball now, Hank, with 10.25 left in the game, I'll bet they wished they'd have kicked that field goal moments ago.
- 2:00:07Yeah, I agree with you 100%. It's always a disaster when you're down there and have an opportunity to get points, whether it's three or seven.
- 2:00:14You've got to come away with points and they came away with nothing. Fourth and four and they didn't succeed in making the first down.
- 2:00:19Rick Partridge is kicking and Theo Bell stands at his 10 waiting for it. This is Partridge's first punt of the night.
- 2:00:25He'll get it away from his 45. He's not molested and he kicks the ball terribly. High short bounces inside the 25 and it's down inside the 25.
- 2:00:35By San Diego, Partridge had a 39.2 average. Fans let him have the business as he kicked the ball very, very short with 10.16 remaining in the game.
- 2:00:45A 24 yard punt. There's a timeout on the field with a score. San Diego 19, the Steelers 10.
- 2:00:55Each team has punted one time. San Diego has 23 first downs. Pittsburgh 12. Pittsburgh's at their 25 trailing by nine points. 10.16 left in the game and out they come.
- 2:01:06Swan to the right, Theo Bell to the left, tight end Cunningham on the right side. On first down, here's a fumble and Pittsburgh got it back but they lost three yards.
- 2:01:20Franco Harris was right on top of Bradshaw when he attempted to hand it off. And they got it back at the 22 and lost three.
- 2:01:36And they can mark it down on the 23 yard line. Second down and 12. Steelers a long way to go trailing by nine. Swan right, Bell left, Cunningham on the right side.
- 2:01:51Here's the center over the ball. Cunningham the grip to guards. Brown and Peterson the tackles. Here's Bradshaw's pass to Harris. He's hit for a loss on the play and dropped by the middle linebacker Bob Horn at the 18 yard line.
- 2:02:06What a difference that when you have linebackers who can stay with those running backs.
- 2:02:09Yes and he read it perfectly perfectly that time. And here again Franco Harris has not run that kind of a play that well. You have to have somebody with great quickness and speed who can operate efficiently on a one on one situation.
- 2:02:22Franco Harris runs so well straight ahead he does not do that kind of thing well and was nailed to the cross by Bob Horn.
- 2:02:28And here's the second 16 with Bell, Swan and Sweeney the wide receivers. Scott Perry is the extra back for San Diego. Bradshaw's going to throw a little pressure. He steps up and throws long and they failed and incomplete.
- 2:02:41Incomplete at the 45 yard line intended for Bell. Well covered by Willie Buchanan on the corner. And Pittsburgh will have to punt the 846 left.
- 2:02:50And he's going to get a gallon effort to try to come back and make that catch. He just didn't do it. Buchanan was right on top of him that time and did a good job defensively.
- 2:02:58Mike Fuller goes back to get Craig Cole quick second punt of the night.
- 2:03:05First bump was 48 yards.
- 2:03:10Edwards goes back as a blocking back for Fuller.
- 2:03:15There a man short here he comes. And here is the kick and it's out near midfield it bounces and goes past Fuller inside the 40 down to the 36 down near the 35 of San Diego.
- 2:03:28Fuller was afraid to take a chance and he did the smart thing. It cost him yards but he backed away. I don't know why he didn't catch it.
- 2:03:34He did a poor job Jack really of what he did and he didn't get a jump on the ball and you're right with a situation like it was he was smart to get away from it. He didn't get a jump on the ball and had no chance whatsoever to make the catch. He got away from it and went a bounce and he lost about 15 yards on the play.
- 2:03:47Balls marked down on the San Diego 35, 836 left with a score. San Diego 19 and Pittsburgh 10. Let's take time out.
- 2:03:56San Diego wins here tonight. They win the division. They make a wild card team out of Oakland. They eliminate New England and San Diego will also get a home game. Here is the toss to the tailback Muncie.
- 2:04:07Muncie is out to the 40 yard line and one down and about the 43. Big yard for the running back. The clock continues to run. Mike Wagner with a strong tackle. We're down to 820 left in the game.
- 2:04:18The San Diego Chargers really made a very wise decision early in the season by being able to get Chuck Muncie. Chuck Muncie has really added a great running dimension to this football team and has given them the balance they've been seeking and he's really made a tremendous difference.
- 2:04:34He just picked up seven yards out to the 43 yard line of the Chargers. Jefferson goes in motion and Muncie carries again this time to the right side and he is hit for a loss on the play. Johnson came up very strong and made the tackle.
- 2:04:51Muncie lost a yard. And the way they're chasing on that formation the quarterback could really keep it himself Jack and scamper around the left side even if he didn't make a lot of yards he at least keep that defense honest and keep him from chasing as fast as they are right now at this stage of the game.
- 2:05:06Bounces rushed only 23 times this year and has two touchdowns and he has zero rushing average. That's a good reason why he's not going to run that play. The ball's back at the 41 and it's third down and four. Look at that middle.
- 2:05:21Somewhere along the line they had to run something in that middle area because he dumps it off short and it is caught by Muncie to the 45. He is out of bounds near the 48 and appears to have a first down. He does.
- 2:05:33Muncie knew that he had to go out to the 48 for the first down before Widener pumped him out. He got a first down for San Diego.
- 2:05:43You know he's got great speed good size and he's one of the strongest runners I've ever seen going down the sideline. He's very very difficult to knock out of bounds and he doesn't run out of bounds he makes you knock him out of bounds.
- 2:05:55Now we have seven oh nine remaining in the game the clock is stopped.
- 2:06:00Perhaps the Steelers are to Mike Thomas is in Muncie is out seven oh nine left San Diego leading by nine 19 to 10 on first down John Jefferson in motion and here's bounce with a first down pass swings it off to Mike Thomas to the 45 is the midfield.
- 2:06:17He's down to the 45 of Pittsburgh out of the 44 and he got about eight yards on the play before Lambert tackled it.
- 2:06:25A lot of missed tackles by Pittsburgh. Well he said he's got such great great fitness and happy feet and good speed that it's hard to tackle him on the open field.
- 2:06:33He's very busy runner. Now we're down to six forty five left in the game.
- 2:06:41They're sweating it out in Oakland they're sweating it out in New England.
- 2:06:45Pittsburgh already out of the playoffs second down and two for San Diego six and a half minutes left. They have the ball at the 44 of Pittsburgh's and here is Thomas.
- 2:06:55He gets a first down to the 40 yard line by Thomas tackle by Gary Dunn and Jack Lambert but another San Diego first down.
- 2:07:03Twenty fifth first down of the night. That little rascal did a good job that time he started the outside and there is a great illustration of his quickness. He reminds me a little bit of Mike Garrett. Mike was a great runner from our days in Kansas City.
- 2:07:15A tremendous fitness great eyes good vision and was able to make those kind of adjustments and stretch the one two yard game to the six or seven yard game which is very important.
- 2:07:25Five fifty left in the game the ball at the 40 of Pittsburgh a first down San Diego taking a lot of time on the 30 second clock before the snap.
- 2:07:33Here comes the joiner in motion and Pouts delays the ball to Thomas Lambert nailed him no game.
- 2:07:40Jack Lambert got him right at the 40 but the clock is killing the Steelers right now and killing the New England Patriots in the process.
- 2:07:48Talking about quick feet. Remember Abner Haynes a great runner he was. We put in the I formation for him in 1962 when everybody thought we were crazy because at that time nobody was using the I formation except the Dallas Cowboys on occasion.
- 2:08:02But he did a super job running from the I formation because he could change direction so well and had such quick feet.
- 2:08:08And it is Thomas and Muncie and the tight end is out second and then Pouts going to put it up there not bashful long over the middle.
- 2:08:19The 16 yard line.
- 2:08:21And Andrew made the tackle along with Wagner on wind. Well who is something to be all there tonight. He's a piece of work. He's a he's a dynamite receiver and of course he's a loose tackle because he's so large and six six to 45 and runs patterns like an outside receiver.
- 2:08:38hands terrific touch very
- 2:08:39intelligent receiver.
- 2:08:41In the day moving around so
- 2:08:42much and it's hard to locate
- 2:08:43where he is.
- 2:08:44You get a variety of guys try
- 2:08:45to cover him as a mismatch and
- 2:08:47there was a great great
- 2:08:48illustration how open he was in
- 2:08:49the middle area at the 16 of
- 2:08:51Pittsburgh only 4 20 left in the
- 2:08:54game.
- 2:08:55First down San Diego.
- 2:08:56They don't sit on the football
- 2:08:57I'll tell you that they're in
- 2:08:58the eye and the gives it to the
- 2:08:59tailback Muncie following
- 2:09:01Thomas he blasts down to the 14
- 2:09:04and got only two yards.
- 2:09:05Go Green Mettam head on with a
- 2:09:08two yard.
- 2:09:09This would be a great time to
- 2:09:10get to running backs in the game
- 2:09:11this would be a good time to
- 2:09:12really take a tough hard nose
- 2:09:13approach and make this San Diego
- 2:09:15charger team.
- 2:09:16Sticking into the end zone with
- 2:09:17a running game they've got that
- 2:09:19they've got a big strong
- 2:09:20offensive line they don't do
- 2:09:21that very often but somewhere
- 2:09:22along the line they have to do
- 2:09:24it and this would be a good time
- 2:09:25to get into practice and get
- 2:09:26some hard work.
- 2:09:27They're killing a lot of people
- 2:09:28now.
- 2:09:28San Diego leads by nine 19 to 10
- 2:09:30with three 40 left in the game.
- 2:09:33Second and eight from the
- 2:09:33Yankees to the stealer 14 to
- 2:09:38Ryan back Thomas and Muncie and
- 2:09:40on second down to give to Muncie
- 2:09:41running right Joe Green flows
- 2:09:43them down he breaks the tackle
- 2:09:44gets to the 15 out of bounds at
- 2:09:47the 10 and it's going to be
- 2:09:49third down and four bumped out
- 2:09:51by Jack.
- 2:09:52Yeah.
- 2:09:53It stops the clock with three
- 2:09:54twenty eight remaining in the
- 2:09:55game.
- 2:09:56They had the angle on them that
- 2:09:57looked like they were going to
- 2:09:57nail him on the sideline.
- 2:09:58He ran right around everybody
- 2:10:00out and down the field and now
- 2:10:03they're down to four and here
- 2:10:04again they've got two downs to
- 2:10:06get four yards and I would make
- 2:10:07this team get tough to stick it
- 2:10:09in there and make that first
- 2:10:10down by running on the clock to
- 2:10:12stop with three twenty eight
- 2:10:13remaining in the game leading by
- 2:10:16nine a field goal with fourth
- 2:10:18Pittsburgh to get two touchdowns
- 2:10:19to win it and they've been able
- 2:10:21to get only one touchdown on
- 2:10:25third down and four.
- 2:10:26They'll throw it.
- 2:10:27They usually do Jefferson in
- 2:10:29motion bounce.
- 2:10:31Now they're going to run it.
- 2:10:32They're going to be running.
- 2:10:42That was a great drive and it's
- 2:10:43given a little more character
- 2:10:45than we've seen them have in a
- 2:10:46long long time.
- 2:10:48I'm going to tell you something
- 2:10:49Jack I'm much more impressed
- 2:10:50with it now that I've seen the
- 2:10:52way they've run the football.
- 2:10:53They haven't been able to do
- 2:10:54that in the past.
- 2:10:55We were once the only able to do
- 2:10:57it.
- 2:10:57They're going to be a heck of a
- 2:10:58threat in the playoff.
- 2:10:59They're going to be a hell of a
- 2:11:01threat in the playoff.
- 2:11:02They're going to be a hell of a
- 2:11:03threat in the playoff.
- 2:11:03Three twenty three.
- 2:11:04The.
- 2:11:05Diego has increased their lead to
- 2:11:07fifteen points twenty five to
- 2:11:09ten.
- 2:11:10Only three passes in that drive
- 2:11:12seven runs.
- 2:11:13That's what I've been talking
- 2:11:14about.
- 2:11:15They've changed the character of
- 2:11:16the San Diego team.
- 2:11:18Fuller holding for Nershka
- 2:11:19kicking.
- 2:11:20It is good.
- 2:11:21Twenty six to ten.
- 2:11:23Now.
- 2:11:24Pittsburgh.
- 2:11:25Two touchdowns and a field goal
- 2:11:28to win it.
- 2:11:29The Yankees are watching the
- 2:11:30score.
- 2:11:31San Diego twenty six and
- 2:11:32Pittsburgh.
- 2:11:33Ten.
- 2:11:34This place has been rocking the
- 2:11:36Chargers getting all the fans
- 2:11:37support they need.
- 2:11:39They lead twenty six to ten.
- 2:11:41Ernest will kick the ball.
- 2:11:43Anderson deep.
- 2:11:44Paul Thorne followed alongside.
- 2:11:45Good thing they don't have a
- 2:11:46dome stadium here because they
- 2:11:47blow the top of the right off
- 2:11:49that dome.
- 2:11:50The record and the response to
- 2:11:51we're getting here for the San
- 2:11:52Diego Chargers.
- 2:11:53I'll say it looks like they won
- 2:11:54the division.
- 2:11:55It looks like Oakland is a
- 2:11:57wild card game.
- 2:11:58Oakland's out.
- 2:11:59Looks like it will be Houston
- 2:12:00and Oakland.
- 2:12:01Next Sunday.
- 2:12:02Here's the kick.
- 2:12:03It's a short taken by one of
- 2:12:05the Uphamans to the twenty five
- 2:12:06to the thirty.
- 2:12:06All Thorne.
- 2:12:07Out to the thirty five yard
- 2:12:09line and tackle that is on thirty
- 2:12:11five.
- 2:12:12We're a lose.
- 2:12:12I'm glad.
- 2:12:14Glad for Ron Earhart.
- 2:12:15I mentioned this earlier but I
- 2:12:16understand he got a new three
- 2:12:17year contract today and it's a
- 2:12:19great compliment I think to
- 2:12:20Billy Sullivan and their people
- 2:12:22that they're super super people
- 2:12:23with great organization and
- 2:12:25they're doing the right thing by
- 2:12:26giving him more time because
- 2:12:27they've got an excellent team.
- 2:12:28They believe in a strongly and
- 2:12:30I'm sure they're going to do a
- 2:12:30super job in the future just
- 2:12:32like they have in the past.
- 2:12:32It's unfortunate.
- 2:12:33Really that they're not in the
- 2:12:34playoffs.
- 2:12:35All that the thirty six of the
- 2:12:37steers three wide receivers
- 2:12:40including Sweeney.
- 2:12:41Right.
- 2:12:42I was going to put it up he
- 2:12:43throws to the tight end off the
- 2:12:45end depending on again it was
- 2:12:46wide open and he dropped it at
- 2:12:48the San Diego forty five.
- 2:12:50We got a look at Mike Fuller
- 2:12:52who is coming in on him I think
- 2:12:53took his eye off the ball just
- 2:12:55long enough for the ball to be
- 2:12:56in complete three all nine left
- 2:13:01Bradshaw twelve out of twenty
- 2:13:02one hundred and eighty six
- 2:13:03yards San Diego wins here
- 2:13:07tonight.
- 2:13:08Houston will play at Oakland
- 2:13:09Sunday.
- 2:13:09The two wild card team back to
- 2:13:22throw again.
- 2:13:23No pressure steps up.
- 2:13:24Now there's pressure on the
- 2:13:27move to the 30 throws on the
- 2:13:29run.
- 2:13:30It's caught in midfield for a
- 2:13:31first down for Pittsburgh going
- 2:13:34up high together with Theo Bell
- 2:13:35blasted immediately held the
- 2:13:37ball.
- 2:13:38I don't think this first deal
- 2:13:39is a stealer team is going to
- 2:13:41continue to try right to the
- 2:13:43very end.
- 2:13:43That's the kind of people they
- 2:13:44are.
- 2:13:45They haven't won champions just
- 2:13:46like they won without great
- 2:13:48character and they're expressing
- 2:13:49it here with the waiting minutes
- 2:13:50of this football game.
- 2:13:52Now there's only two thirty
- 2:13:53seven remaining in the game.
- 2:13:54The ball at midfield and
- 2:13:55Bradshaw's first down fast he
- 2:13:57looks left throws left and diving
- 2:13:59intercepted the ball and it is
- 2:14:01incomplete.
- 2:14:03Incomplete inside the forty five
- 2:14:04of San Diego.
- 2:14:05Woody Lowe ran one back for a
- 2:14:08touchdown this year.
- 2:14:10Made a diving try is coming.
- 2:14:11You have an easy battle for the
- 2:14:12ball incomplete.
- 2:14:13Yeah I thought he had it from
- 2:14:14here but Evan Elliott and that
- 2:14:17stops the clock with two twenty
- 2:14:19eight remaining in the game and
- 2:14:21the San Diego on top by 16 twenty
- 2:14:24six to 10.
- 2:14:27We can tell you a little more
- 2:14:28about the playoffs.
- 2:14:29We will wait until victory is
- 2:14:32assured on the part of one team
- 2:14:33or another.
- 2:14:34A lot can still happen although
- 2:14:36the Steelers trail by 16.
- 2:14:38Here is Bradshaw back to throw
- 2:14:40swings it off incomplete way off
- 2:14:42the mark.
- 2:14:46Franco Harris stopped on the
- 2:14:47pattern he anticipated being the
- 2:14:50ball being thrown to him at the
- 2:14:52dead spot.
- 2:14:52And of course Bradshaw thought
- 2:14:54he was going to continue to run
- 2:14:55through it out in front and of
- 2:14:56course there was no way he could
- 2:14:57make the play.
- 2:14:58I don't want to belabor the
- 2:14:59point but I guess I'm doing it
- 2:15:01fourth down and four at the San
- 2:15:03Diego twenty four Pittsburgh
- 2:15:05trailing by nine at the time and
- 2:15:06they passed up the field goal
- 2:15:08and that changed everything
- 2:15:09around because San Diego came
- 2:15:11right back and got the touchdown.
- 2:15:14Yeah very surprised at that call.
- 2:15:15I had to understand why they
- 2:15:17didn't go for the three point
- 2:15:18point.
- 2:15:19John third down back to throw
- 2:15:21his right hand away from the
- 2:15:23right throws on the run.
- 2:15:25Incomplete.
- 2:15:27We try to get it out to his
- 2:15:28receiver.
- 2:15:29He was nowhere near the fans
- 2:15:30are going because they thought
- 2:15:31it was intentional grounding to
- 2:15:33try to get it out to Rocky
- 2:15:34Flyers fourth down.
- 2:15:35Pittsburgh is going to have to
- 2:15:37go from scrimmage on fourth down.
- 2:15:39Now we have to 17.
- 2:15:43A lot of pressure that time by
- 2:15:45San Diego Jim Tooney that time
- 2:15:47was right on the play watching
- 2:15:50for a possible way to get a
- 2:15:53something of some kind on a
- 2:15:54quarterback.
- 2:15:54But nothing like that occurred.
- 2:15:57Pittsburgh shows the first
- 2:16:01this will be the third one for
- 2:16:02Cole quit if he does kick the
- 2:16:04ball I don't know why in the
- 2:16:05world are kicking it.
- 2:16:05Thank you.
- 2:16:06No I don't either.
- 2:16:07I really don't either.
- 2:16:08I'm going to do something from
- 2:16:09the kick formation.
- 2:16:10He kicks it away.
- 2:16:12San Diego will get it.
- 2:16:13It's kicked high and it bounces
- 2:16:16inside the 10 and it is downed
- 2:16:19by the Steelers inside the five.
- 2:16:21San Diego is way back at the
- 2:16:24two or six left in the game.
- 2:16:28On the five yard line a 47 yard
- 2:16:30point a timeout on the field
- 2:16:31with a score.
- 2:16:33And you go 26 Pittsburgh 10.
- 2:16:37Two oh six left bounces 21 out
- 2:16:40of 37 three hundred and eight
- 2:16:42yards at the eighth time this
- 2:16:43year.
- 2:16:44He's gone over 300 yards passing
- 2:16:46in a single game and that is an
- 2:16:47NFL record.
- 2:16:49Hank I know with two or six left
- 2:16:51and a half you like the offensive
- 2:16:53approach on the part of the
- 2:16:54Chargers tonight.
- 2:16:55Well no question about that.
- 2:16:56Of course I like their approach
- 2:16:57anyhow.
- 2:16:58It's a very contemporary
- 2:16:59approach one where you move move
- 2:17:01people around make people read
- 2:17:02respond and react on the run.
- 2:17:04I like to see that kind of
- 2:17:05football and I think it's very
- 2:17:07progressive and I think Don
- 2:17:08Corey Allen is better than a
- 2:17:09super job like Thomas from the
- 2:17:11five takes it up the middle and
- 2:17:12goes to the seven or eight yard
- 2:17:14line.
- 2:17:15And that takes us to the two
- 2:17:16minute mark two minutes remaining
- 2:17:18in this final game of the
- 2:17:20regular season.
- 2:17:21And it is 26 to 10 in favor of
- 2:17:23San Diego applause in the action
- 2:17:25that let's take time out.
- 2:17:30Pittsburgh is rushed for only
- 2:17:31twenty nine yards tonight.
- 2:17:34San Diego's Chuck Muncie is
- 2:17:35rushed for one hundred and twelve
- 2:17:36yards.
- 2:17:38Mike Thomas just picked up three
- 2:17:40and a second down and seven for
- 2:17:42the Chargers at their own eight
- 2:17:43with two minutes remaining this
- 2:17:49will put San Diego in as the
- 2:17:51champion of their division make
- 2:17:53a wild card team out of Oakland
- 2:17:55eliminate New England Houston
- 2:17:58will play at Oakland Sunday if
- 2:18:00Oakland wins Oakland will play
- 2:18:02at Cleveland on either the third
- 2:18:03or the fourth and Buffalo will
- 2:18:04play at San Diego on either the
- 2:18:06third or the fourth.
- 2:18:07And they stand on the ground the
- 2:18:08Chargers do and only about a
- 2:18:10yard over the left side to
- 2:18:11Thomas and he was tackled by
- 2:18:15Gary Dunn.
- 2:18:17I'm called by the Steelers
- 2:18:19talking about Buffalo what a
- 2:18:20great job Chuck Knox and his
- 2:18:21fine staff Tom Catlin all those
- 2:18:23fine people have done with the
- 2:18:24Buffalo Bills.
- 2:18:25Lehman Bennett the same kind of
- 2:18:26a situation with the Atlanta
- 2:18:27Falcons.
- 2:18:28OK.
- 2:18:29On the last play third and seven
- 2:18:30San Diego coming up timeout
- 2:18:32Pittsburgh one fifty six left
- 2:18:34sixteen point lead for San
- 2:18:36Diego.
- 2:18:36Let's listen to this.
- 2:18:37Let me repeat what I said a
- 2:18:39moment ago.
- 2:18:40San Diego wins here tonight.
- 2:18:41Houston will play at Oakland
- 2:18:43next Sunday.
- 2:18:44If Oakland wins Oakland will
- 2:18:46play at Cleveland on either the
- 2:18:47third or the fourth of January
- 2:18:49and Buffalo will play here in
- 2:18:51San Diego on either the third or
- 2:18:54the fourth.
- 2:18:54Meanwhile in the NFC Los Angeles
- 2:18:57will play at Dallas on Sunday.
- 2:18:59If Los Angeles wins Los Angeles
- 2:19:02will play at Philadelphia on the
- 2:19:03third or the fourth and
- 2:19:04Minnesota will play at San Diego
- 2:19:05on either the third or the
- 2:19:06fourth.
- 2:19:07Minnesota will play at Atlanta
- 2:19:08on the third or the fourth.
- 2:19:10And if Dallas wins Dallas plays
- 2:19:12at Atlanta or Minnesota plays
- 2:19:14at Philadelphia.
- 2:19:14So things are much more clearly
- 2:19:17defined.
- 2:19:18What with the Steelers already
- 2:19:21out of it and the New England
- 2:19:22Patriots fading out of it.
- 2:19:24One fifty six left.
- 2:19:25And what a great job.
- 2:19:26Sam Rizzi Gwiyano and his
- 2:19:27Cleveland staff Jim Garrett
- 2:19:29Ritchie Cotai that fight bunch
- 2:19:30of done with their football
- 2:19:31team and heard but the grant
- 2:19:33also with the Minnesota Vikings
- 2:19:34is third and seven and Thomas
- 2:19:36Williams across the 10 out to
- 2:19:38the 12.
- 2:19:39San Diego will have to punt but
- 2:19:40they're not concerned they lead
- 2:19:42by 16 three yard pickup by
- 2:19:47Thomas.
- 2:19:49One forty eight left.
- 2:19:52And now the Steelers are down to
- 2:19:54one time out as they call the
- 2:19:55time out here.
- 2:19:59Punting time for the Chargers
- 2:20:00and Rick Partridge.
- 2:20:04The 24 yarder a while ago that
- 2:20:06was a great job.
- 2:20:07He's got the attention of the
- 2:20:08fans.
- 2:20:09What would you do here if you
- 2:20:10were the mentor.
- 2:20:11Jack would you go after the
- 2:20:12kicker would you try to block
- 2:20:13it or would you just let him
- 2:20:14kick it.
- 2:20:15Well I guess close as it is.
- 2:20:16I think you might get a
- 2:20:17touchdown out of it if you could
- 2:20:18block it.
- 2:20:20I'd chase in after the ball.
- 2:20:22You know you're out of it
- 2:20:23anyhow.
- 2:20:24And even if you're running the
- 2:20:25kicker throw what.
- 2:20:26Yeah I think it makes a lot of
- 2:20:27sense to go after this.
- 2:20:28You've got to score quickly
- 2:20:29somehow some way and that would
- 2:20:31be one way you could do it if
- 2:20:32you could block the kick fall on
- 2:20:33the end zone and get a quick
- 2:20:34run with one forty eight left to
- 2:20:35the ballgame.
- 2:20:36The old bell is out in midfield
- 2:20:37there is the kick by part
- 2:20:39rigid the good one.
- 2:20:40The way they say the fans and
- 2:20:41they'll take it on the 38 to the
- 2:20:4340 running on forty five and
- 2:20:45goes out of bounds at the
- 2:20:47Pittsburgh forty eight yard
- 2:20:48line.
- 2:20:49Fine punch by Rick Partridge on
- 2:20:51a Utah.
- 2:20:53Now we have one thirty eight
- 2:20:54left.
- 2:20:55There was no rush on the fun at
- 2:20:56all.
- 2:20:57He had plenty of time to kick it.
- 2:20:58They had a return on 49 yards
- 2:21:02one thirty eight left in the
- 2:21:03game Rick Partridge under the
- 2:21:05ball.
- 2:21:06I hope that's the last I hear
- 2:21:07the partridge between now and
- 2:21:08Christmas.
- 2:21:09That song drives me not one
- 2:21:11thirty eight remaining in the
- 2:21:12football game.
- 2:21:14Partridge in a fair three twenty
- 2:21:15six to ten.
- 2:21:17The Chargers on top and Bradshaw
- 2:21:22goes to work once more.
- 2:21:23Very few rushing yards for
- 2:21:26Pittsburgh Bradshaw going to
- 2:21:27throw it.
- 2:21:28Stand that is 40 a lot of time
- 2:21:30and he threw behind the
- 2:21:31intended receiver.
- 2:21:34He looks like he's coming
- 2:21:36across the middle that time is
- 2:21:37putting got away from him and
- 2:21:39he slipped and fell in the ball
- 2:21:40was thrown behind and falls
- 2:21:41incomplete.
- 2:21:42What kind of a night is Bradshaw
- 2:21:43at.
- 2:21:43Well Terrence has had 13 and
- 2:21:4424 for two hundred one yards
- 2:21:50score at halftime was nine to
- 2:21:51three in favor of San Diego.
- 2:21:53They've scored in every quarter
- 2:21:54tonight three in the first six
- 2:21:55in the second then ten and
- 2:21:57seven.
- 2:21:58Steeler has got three and then a
- 2:22:01touchdown three in the second
- 2:22:03quarter then a touchdown there
- 2:22:04only TD of the night in the
- 2:22:05third quarter.
- 2:22:06My old dear friend and one of
- 2:22:09the great coaches in college
- 2:22:10football Andy Gustafson told me
- 2:22:11when I became the head coach of
- 2:22:12the Dallas Texans and Kansas City
- 2:22:14Tays he said listen if you're
- 2:22:15in it long enough it'll all come
- 2:22:16back it'll all happen to you.
- 2:22:18Bradshaw throwing the ball to
- 2:22:20Lynn Swan who caught it at the
- 2:22:2130 yard line of San Diego for a
- 2:22:23first down and he's wrestled
- 2:22:24out and drilled all the way back
- 2:22:27to the 35.
- 2:22:28And I think of that situation at
- 2:22:29this particular time watching
- 2:22:30Terry Bradshaw because we were
- 2:22:32playing in Kansas City was
- 2:22:33playing in Pittsburgh years ago
- 2:22:34and we were in our prime and
- 2:22:36kind of slipping a little bit he
- 2:22:37came into the locker room before
- 2:22:38the game and said coach on the
- 2:22:39field as the coach you had a
- 2:22:41long enough he said we're a
- 2:22:42young team we're going to take
- 2:22:43it away from you.
- 2:22:44We're going to win today.
- 2:22:45They did.
- 2:22:45Bradshaw throwing into the end
- 2:22:47zone and swan incomplete he ran
- 2:22:49into the defensive back.
- 2:22:51Mike Fuller had good position on
- 2:22:53him and there was a mild
- 2:22:55collision in the end zone
- 2:22:57incomplete.
- 2:22:58I thought that would motivate
- 2:22:59our team and I told our team
- 2:23:00about it and they felt strongly
- 2:23:02about it and played a great
- 2:23:03football game.
- 2:23:04But in spite of that we still
- 2:23:05lost.
- 2:23:06Now I look at Terry Bradshaw
- 2:23:07years later and the same thing
- 2:23:08has happened to their team and
- 2:23:10they're out of the playoffs and
- 2:23:11they have to look to the future
- 2:23:12to get back in.
- 2:23:13You know Mr.
- 2:23:13Rooney the owner of the Steelers
- 2:23:15told me the very outset of the
- 2:23:16season Hank he said we're
- 2:23:17getting a little old.
- 2:23:18I think that's the answer with
- 2:23:19regard to the Steelers.
- 2:23:20Yeah they they have gotten a
- 2:23:22little old but I think the big
- 2:23:23thing really is it made a big
- 2:23:24difference in their football
- 2:23:25team this year.
- 2:23:25They just lost too many
- 2:23:27outstanding people during the
- 2:23:29course of the season and you
- 2:23:30with the competition as keen as
- 2:23:32it is you just can't survive it
- 2:23:34by losing that many people.
- 2:23:35Second and then at the San
- 2:23:37Diego 30 Bradshaw's next pass he
- 2:23:39looked he looks he looks he
- 2:23:41throws long inside the five and
- 2:23:44it falls in complete.
- 2:23:45They try to get it to coming
- 2:23:46here in the tight end and it was
- 2:23:49Scott Perry covering on the play
- 2:23:51in complete with 55 seconds left
- 2:23:53in the game and it'll be third
- 2:23:55down and then the score is San
- 2:23:57Diego on top 26 to 10 San Diego
- 2:24:00wins the division.
- 2:24:02Oakland becomes a wild card
- 2:24:03game.
- 2:24:04New England is out of the
- 2:24:05playoffs and Mark Malone number
- 2:24:0716 is in the game now he's a
- 2:24:09quarterback and a big one a good
- 2:24:10one from the University of
- 2:24:12Arizona Arizona State I should
- 2:24:13say but he's outside going to
- 2:24:15play a flanker position to give
- 2:24:16the idea of the outside
- 2:24:17receivers a little relief.
- 2:24:19Number 16 Mark Malone on the
- 2:24:20outside Pittsburgh only 49
- 2:24:22rushing yards tonight San Diego
- 2:24:24172 Mark Malone on third and 10
- 2:24:27is back to throw he sets up and
- 2:24:30throws and it is caught inside
- 2:24:32the 15 yard line down to the
- 2:24:33ten for a first down for the
- 2:24:35Steelers.
- 2:24:36Number 83 the fast was caught by
- 2:24:39Theo Bell and Michael on six
- 2:24:42four two twenty three twenty
- 2:24:44year old rookie from Arizona
- 2:24:46State and he's going to be a
- 2:24:47super quarterback in years to
- 2:24:48come.
- 2:24:49Thirty seconds left as Malone's
- 2:24:51back to throw again he throws it
- 2:24:52out short to Franco Harris he's
- 2:24:54down to five he's down there the
- 2:24:55three yard line it was Franco
- 2:24:59Harris catching the ball from
- 2:25:02Bradshaw was back in there on
- 2:25:04that trip Malone is playing a
- 2:25:06receiver on the outside as you
- 2:25:07know Jack and he's kind of
- 2:25:09interesting to watch him to me
- 2:25:11and he's trying to help the
- 2:25:11receivers give them a little
- 2:25:13blow but he's big and he's
- 2:25:15strong and he's a good athlete
- 2:25:16six four two twenty three rookie
- 2:25:18from Arizona State.
- 2:25:19Pittsburgh goes their last time
- 2:25:21out a fast play from Bradshaw to
- 2:25:24Franco Harris took the ball down
- 2:25:25to the San Diego three with a
- 2:25:28score twenty six to ten and
- 2:25:30twenty five seconds remaining in
- 2:25:32the football game.
- 2:25:35So fast the bell the fast Harris
- 2:25:37and the Steelers are knocking on
- 2:25:39the door but it won't make much
- 2:25:41difference.
- 2:25:45capacity crowd here in San
- 2:25:46Diego they've been roaring all
- 2:25:47night in support of their team.
- 2:25:50Chargers came into the game with
- 2:25:52a 10 and 5 looks like 11 was the
- 2:25:55magic number this year to win
- 2:25:57the division in the National
- 2:25:58Football League.
- 2:26:01A lot of people thought Hank
- 2:26:02because of the balance prevailing
- 2:26:04and nine wins would get a lot of
- 2:26:06teams in the playoffs that
- 2:26:07turned out not to be true.
- 2:26:08Well you know some of the
- 2:26:11surprising things the Oakland
- 2:26:12Raiders for example what a
- 2:26:14fantastic year they had down for
- 2:26:15his he's done a super job for
- 2:26:17that football team and of course
- 2:26:19Al Davis and Cleveland came out
- 2:26:21of the wilderness so to speak
- 2:26:23and won their division.
- 2:26:25So it's a lot of unusual things
- 2:26:26happen.
- 2:26:27There is and everybody thought
- 2:26:28they'd be last first and go from
- 2:26:30the three years Bradshaw rolling
- 2:26:32left looking to throw his chase
- 2:26:34he throws into the end zone and
- 2:26:36it is conference is out of
- 2:26:38bounds incomplete caught by
- 2:26:40Glyer out of bound.
- 2:26:42Yeah.
- 2:26:44The record said he caught it but
- 2:26:45he was out of bounds covered by
- 2:26:48Glenn Edwards.
- 2:26:49Liar caught it but he was out
- 2:26:51of bounds.
- 2:26:52That would have been a nice way
- 2:26:53for him to end his pro career
- 2:26:55with an egg.
- 2:26:55Yeah I really would have 17
- 2:26:57seconds remaining.
- 2:27:01Now they're all in a sack.
- 2:27:03Dean Tony or Jim Tony the
- 2:27:05referee had ruled it a sack back
- 2:27:07at the 16.
- 2:27:08Now they're running the clock
- 2:27:09with 10 seconds left nine and
- 2:27:12it's called a goal.
- 2:27:13Here Bradshaw throwing in
- 2:27:14complete stopping the clock with
- 2:27:16five seconds left.
- 2:27:17He was back all that action in
- 2:27:22the end zone was the purple
- 2:27:34fourth down.
- 2:27:35Goal to go back at the 16 for
- 2:27:37Pittsburgh.
- 2:27:41On the way the rushing title to
- 2:27:43Earl Campbell with nineteen
- 2:27:45and thirty four yards and the
- 2:27:47great Walter Payton won it again
- 2:27:49in the end of the game.
- 2:27:50John Smith of New England had
- 2:27:52the most points in the league
- 2:27:53amongst the kickers.
- 2:27:57Fourth down Pittsburgh.
- 2:28:00The king is dead long left the
- 2:28:02king the pass into the end zone
- 2:28:04is caught for a touchdown.
- 2:28:06Caught for a touchdown and time
- 2:28:08has expired.
- 2:28:09They will kick the extra point
- 2:28:10coming and caught it 16 yard
- 2:28:13pass the cutting edge.
- 2:28:17Bradshaw to cutting edge.
- 2:28:18He later right in that inning.
- 2:28:24No more time.
- 2:28:25They will have an opportunity
- 2:28:26to kick the extra point that
- 2:28:28makes it 26 to 16.
- 2:28:32The game is over unless we have
- 2:28:34a penalty on the extra point
- 2:28:36here.
- 2:28:37Paul Quint will hold and Matt
- 2:28:39Barr will kick trying to bring
- 2:28:40about the final score.
- 2:28:41Twenty seven seven day and the
- 2:28:43kick is up and good final score
- 2:28:46twenty seven seventeen.
- 2:28:47San Diego wins the.
- 2:28:50West.
- 2:28:52But you believe that here in the
- 2:28:54California city.
- 2:28:55The end of the game between the
- 2:28:57speeders and the judges.
- 2:28:58The final score.
- 2:29:00San Diego twenty six.
- 2:29:02Pittsburgh.
- 2:29:03Seventeen.
- 2:29:08The fans here give a royal
- 2:29:10salute to the San Diego
- 2:29:11Chargers.
- 2:29:12They won their 11th game of the
- 2:29:14year tonight.
- 2:29:15They won the Western Division of
- 2:29:16the AFC.
- 2:29:18They are in the playoffs.
- 2:29:19They've got next week off and
- 2:29:20be in action.
- 2:29:21Either on the third or the
- 2:29:22fourth.
- 2:29:23We saw it yesterday with a game
- 2:29:25that Cincinnati played against
- 2:29:26Cleveland.
- 2:29:27We saw it here tonight.
- 2:29:28Pittsburgh gave it everything
- 2:29:29they had against San Diego.
- 2:29:31No England's out of it but they
- 2:29:32couldn't have asked for more.
- 2:29:34From the Steelers.
- 2:29:35No they really couldn't have.
- 2:29:36And the only questionable thing
- 2:29:37is we talk about it and Chuck
- 2:29:39Noll is such a quality guy and
- 2:29:40a great coach that he had his
- 2:29:41reason to do what he did.
- 2:29:43Surprising that he didn't go for
- 2:29:44the three points when he had a
- 2:29:45chance on fourth and four when
- 2:29:47they were down by nine points.
- 2:29:49But he didn't.
- 2:29:49He had a good reason I'm sure
- 2:29:51that could have made a difference
- 2:29:51in the game.
- 2:29:52You sort of jumped on the San
- 2:29:53Diego Pan Wagon tonight based on
- 2:29:55what you saw.
- 2:29:56Yes I was all year long was
- 2:29:58concerned about the fact they
- 2:29:59never run the ball very well.
- 2:30:01They run from passing formations
- 2:30:02but I think they're kind of
- 2:30:04coming on strong with the fact
- 2:30:05that you're doing a super job.
- 2:30:08So as Thomas the other running
- 2:30:09back to the corner ball with
- 2:30:10great skill and ability and I
- 2:30:12think they've got a great great
- 2:30:13chance to go all the way.
- 2:30:14Now that they have better
- 2:30:15balance if they continue to
- 2:30:17express that kind of balance for
- 2:30:18the future.
- 2:30:18Well nurse kicked four field
- 2:30:20goals here tonight to tie a San
- 2:30:21Diego record and wasn't that
- 2:30:23Kellen Winslow something.
- 2:30:24He's always something he he has
- 2:30:26a special dimension.
- 2:30:28If you're going to win big in
- 2:30:29the national football league in
- 2:30:30today's style of play you must
- 2:30:33you must.
- 2:30:34I underlined that by saying you
- 2:30:35must have a great tight end.
- 2:30:37They have him in Winslow and
- 2:30:38they're using the greatest end
- 2:30:40of the crowd is booing here.
- 2:30:41A spectator ran out in the field
- 2:30:43and the police are really giving
- 2:30:45him the business and they take
- 2:30:46him off the field.
- 2:30:47San Diego 1 is 26 to 17 over the
- 2:30:51Steelers and will return in just
- 2:30:52a moment to either team along to
- 2:31:00either team at halftime with
- 2:31:02San Diego precariously ahead 9
- 2:31:04to 3.
- 2:31:04But then they came out at the
- 2:31:05start of the second half and on
- 2:31:07the very first play from
- 2:31:08scrimmage for a long pass play
- 2:31:10to Kellen Winslow to the
- 2:31:12Pittsburgh twenty three yard
- 2:31:13line again 54 yards pass to
- 2:31:16Jefferson made it first and
- 2:31:17goal from the five.
- 2:31:19San Diego overcame a holding
- 2:31:22penalty and then on fourth and
- 2:31:23one they passed up the field
- 2:31:25goal.
- 2:31:25The Chargers did about stick it
- 2:31:27over to make the score 16 to 3
- 2:31:30and from that point on the
- 2:31:31Chargers were rather
- 2:31:32comfortable.
- 2:31:33It turned out that Thornton of
- 2:31:35the Pittsburgh was to get the
- 2:31:37next touchdown making it 16 to
- 2:31:3910 with a 14 remaining in the
- 2:31:41game.
- 2:31:42Then Bernerska kicked his fourth
- 2:31:44field goal of the night time the
- 2:31:45San Diego record that made a 19
- 2:31:49to 10.
- 2:31:50And that's when the play came
- 2:31:51about.
- 2:31:52There was most puzzling fourth
- 2:31:54and poor Pittsburgh at the San
- 2:31:55Diego 20 trailing by nine.
- 2:31:57They passed up the field goal
- 2:31:59try and the pass was incomplete
- 2:32:01and the ball was passed to Thornton
- 2:32:07as it was broken up and the
- 2:32:08score ended 19 10 at the end of
- 2:32:10the third quarter and San Diego
- 2:32:12took over.
- 2:32:13They went down to make a 26 to
- 2:32:1410 a pass to Winslow.
- 2:32:17Well as they had to punt to
- 2:32:19Pittsburgh and got the ball back
- 2:32:20at their own 35 a pass to Muncie
- 2:32:23to the 48 a pass to Winslow to
- 2:32:25the 16.
- 2:32:26They moved on in and once he
- 2:32:27took over for the score 26 to 10
- 2:32:30with time he left a 10 yard
- 2:32:32touchdown pass from Bradshaw to
- 2:32:34Cunningham.
- 2:32:35Thought about the final score of
- 2:32:3626 17 San Diego.
- 2:32:39We'll talk about the playoff
- 2:32:40picture when we come back.
- 2:32:41Let's pause for this word the
- 2:32:44playoff picture is not very
- 2:32:46complicated.
- 2:32:46Now we'll talk about it.
- 2:32:48Let's pause five seconds for
- 2:32:49stations to identify themselves
- 2:32:51on the CBS radio network.
- 2:32:53This is W.N.A.X.
- 2:32:54Yankton South Dakota your big
