- 0:18Speaker 1: And a good friday morning to you thank you for
- 0:20Speaker 1: joining us here on this is the life podcast as
- 0:22Speaker 1: we get ready for our front porch friday moment today
- 0:25Speaker 1: i got to thinking this morning about the little things
- 0:28Speaker 1: that we keep kind of going through some stuff the
- 0:31Speaker 1: other day and I had to pause a few times
- 0:34Speaker 1: to just take a good look at some of the
- 0:37Speaker 1: things that I keep over the years, particularly with children
- 0:40Speaker 1: and grandchildren and things like that. You kind of tend
- 0:43Speaker 1: to hang on to some things. Some things in our
- 0:47Speaker 1: homes would mean very little to anyone else, if we're honest.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Maybe you have old photographs or birthday cards with a
- 0:54Speaker 1: few little words written inside. Maybe it's a ticket from
- 0:57Speaker 1: a trip that you took that you really, really enjoyed.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Or a small toy of a grandchild that maybe they
- 1:06Speaker 1: kept over the years or maybe it was their favorite.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Whatever it is. I personally, I still have shoes, toothbrushes,
- 1:13Speaker 1: hair bows, all kinds of things that are priceless to me.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But everybody else may not think so. But what we
- 1:21Speaker 1: do is we keep them because they remind us of someone.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Or they take us back to a moment where we're
- 1:28Speaker 1: thankful that we lived that particular moment in life. Joshua
- 1:34Speaker 1: was commanded in the scriptures, in the book of Joshua,
- 1:38Speaker 1: he was commanded to place 12 stones on the bank
- 1:41Speaker 1: of the Jordan River, if you remember that, once they
- 1:44Speaker 1: had crossed over. Now listen to what the word said.
- 1:46Speaker 1: It said, And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before
- 1:50Speaker 1: the ark of the Lord your God in the midst
- 1:52Speaker 1: of the Jordan River, And take ye up every man
- 1:55Speaker 1: of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the
- 1:59Speaker 1: number of the tribes of the children of Israel, that
- 2:03Speaker 1: this may be a sign among you, listen to this,
- 2:07Speaker 1: that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying,
- 2:12Speaker 1: What mean these stones? See, the stones gave the next
- 2:16Speaker 1: generation a reason to ask what they meant. It also
- 2:21Speaker 1: gave the previous generation a an opportunity to express what
- 2:25Speaker 1: they meant. And that's what we do with the little
- 2:28Speaker 1: things and the keepsakes that we keep. I wonder how
- 2:32Speaker 1: many times you have opened a drawer and you were
- 2:34Speaker 1: looking for something or maybe you were cleaning house and
- 2:37Speaker 1: one thing you found and then all of a sudden
- 2:39Speaker 1: it made you stop for a moment. And just for
- 2:42Speaker 1: a moment, you could hear that familiar little voice again.
- 2:46Speaker 1: And you remembered where you were exactly at that moment.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Maybe who was beside you. Maybe the inflections in their voice.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Ordinary day it seemed like at the time, but you
- 3:00Speaker 1: had no idea that you would still be thinking about
- 3:03Speaker 1: that moment all these years later. After Jesus fed the multitude,
- 3:08Speaker 1: there's a little part in there that really always caught
- 3:12Speaker 1: my attention when he told them to pick up all
- 3:15Speaker 1: that remained. He said that nothing be lost. That made
- 3:20Speaker 1: me think about the small pieces of our own life
- 3:23Speaker 1: that we take time to keep. See, a photograph can't
- 3:29Speaker 1: bring back the day that has passed. Or a handwritten
- 3:32Speaker 1: note can't give us another conversation with someone that we
- 3:35Speaker 1: love or someone that we miss. But it can remind
- 3:39Speaker 1: us that that day happened. The words were spoken and
- 3:43Speaker 1: the love was real. And we can thank God for that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: even if remembering brings a tear to our eyes. And
- 3:51Speaker 1: sometimes what we keep also helps us tell a story.
- 3:55Speaker 1: A child may ask whose writing is in that card,
- 3:58Speaker 1: or a grandchild wants to know who's in that particular picture. Well,
- 4:02Speaker 1: that gives us an opportunity to sit down together. And
- 4:05Speaker 1: a name that may not have been mentioned for years
- 4:08Speaker 1: suddenly becomes the centerpiece of the conversation. And we remember
- 4:12Speaker 1: the way that person laughed and the kindness that they had.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What I'm trying to tell you this morning is we
- 4:19Speaker 1: keep those things for a reason. And that is what
- 4:23Speaker 1: I love about these Friday devotions on our spiritual front
- 4:26Speaker 1: porch of our lives is each one of us can
- 4:29Speaker 1: bring just a few pieces of our lives together. And
- 4:33Speaker 1: when we share them together, someone else may remember a
- 4:37Speaker 1: person they loved or notice a small blessing in their
- 4:40Speaker 1: own home. So here's my question for you today. What
- 4:45Speaker 1: small little thing have you kept because of the person
- 4:49Speaker 1: or the moment it reminded you of? You can tell
- 4:55Speaker 1: us what it is and maybe even the story behind
- 4:58Speaker 1: it in the comments today. I'd love to hear about it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And perhaps before this day is over, take a moment
- 5:04Speaker 1: to hold that little keepsake again. And thank God for
- 5:08Speaker 1: the memory that it carries. Because it will never come
- 5:13Speaker 1: again just like that. But every time we look back,
- 5:18Speaker 1: we can look back with fondness and say, Thank you, Lord.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Thank you for memories. And the little treasures that you
- 5:25Speaker 1: give us to help us hold on to those memories
- 5:28Speaker 1: are very precious to us. So today you be safe.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You be strong and you be blessed. And go out
- 5:36Speaker 1: and make you some memories because, especially when it comes
- 5:40Speaker 1: to our little ones, they grow up fast. Lord's will,
- 5:44Speaker 1: we'll gather back here again on Monday. Have a great day.
- 5:50Speaker 2: There's a glow in their eyes by the morning light
- 6:12Speaker 2: A soft little laugh that makes everything right. Crayons on
- 6:18Speaker 2: the table, dreams in their hands. You blink and time
- 6:23Speaker 2: just shifts like sand. You try to hold the moments
- 6:28Speaker 2: that pass, but still they grow up fast. The days
- 6:33Speaker 2: feel long, but the years seem short. You find your
- 6:38Speaker 2: joy in their simple thoughts. We'll be right back. So
- 7:08Speaker 2: hold them close, don't let go too soon. These days
- 7:13Speaker 2: will fade like the midnight moon. The mess is the
- 7:18Speaker 2: laughter their memories made. Someday you'll wish you could just replay.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So love every second, let each moment last. They grow
- 7:33Speaker 2: up fast. One day they'll call just to say they're fine.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You'll hear their voice and drift back in time.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Back to the days that slipped through your grasp. Realizing
- 7:49Speaker 2: love is the one thing that lasts. You walk through
- 7:53Speaker 2: the halls and see how they've grown. The toys are gone.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The silence has grown. Because they grow up fast. Thank you.
