- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here it is Tuesday, it's the 23rd of
- 0:16January and you have tapped on play.
- 0:19And here I am and we are going to continue this fascinating
- 0:22story, getting to know this young kid by the name of David
- 0:27and what on earth he is going to get up to.
- 0:30And today we will see that God truly is with him because you,
- 0:35you, my friend, are going to transport yourself back to your
- 0:38Sunday school persona and you are going to sit from the
- 0:43carpet, cross legged, hands in your lap and listen to the story
- 0:46of David and Goliath. Ohe yes, we are reaching that
- 0:50behemoth. And I'm not talking about
- 0:52Goliath. I'm talking about this story
- 0:54which punches so far above its weight as far as stories from
- 0:59the Old Testament go. This is a wonderful story.
- 1:02And it's not just about the fact that this little kid beats a big
- 1:06warrior, but the way they used to do battle back in the day in
- 1:10the ancient Near East is these two armies would come toward
- 1:14each other. And before the armies battled
- 1:16each other, they would send a champion and those champions
- 1:20would come and they would fight each other and that would
- 1:22determine who's God was more powerful than the other God.
- 1:27And essentially the loser would realise oht no, they're God's
- 1:31more powerful than our God and we are going to lose.
- 1:34It's inevitable. You know this is, this is the
- 1:37way that that the the cosmos works.
- 1:39So when David steps forward to fight Goliath, he really is
- 1:42saying, I believe that my God is stronger than their God.
- 1:47It's it's a fantastic story and tells us so much about the heart
- 1:52of this man to be David. So let us without any further
- 1:57ado, well we're going to get to that story.
- 1:59It's later on in the chapter, but let's settle in and hear
- 2:02more about this family and this boy as we read together.
- 2:07First Samuel, Chapter 17. The Philistines now mustered
- 2:22their army for battle and camped between Soko in Judah and Azaka
- 2:28at Ephesus Damam soul counted by gathering his Israelite troops
- 2:33near the valley of Allah. So the Philistines and
- 2:36Israelites faced each other on opposite hills with the valley
- 2:40between them. Then Goliath, A Philistine
- 2:44champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the
- 2:48forces of Israel. He was over 9 feet tall.
- 2:52He wore a bronze helmet and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125
- 2:57lbs. He also wore bronze leg armour
- 3:01and he carried A bronze javelin on his shoulder.
- 3:04The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver's
- 3:08beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 lbs.
- 3:13His armour bearer walked ahead of him, carrying a shield.
- 3:16Goliath stood and shouted A taunt across to the Israelites.
- 3:21Why are you all coming to fight? He called.
- 3:24I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of
- 3:29soul. Choose one man to come down here
- 3:32and fight me. If he kills me, then we will be
- 3:36your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be
- 3:39our slaves. I defy the armies of Israel
- 3:43today. Send me a man who will fight me.
- 3:48When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified
- 3:51and deeply shaken. Now David was the son of a man
- 3:56named Jesse and Ephrathite, from Bethlehem in the land of Judah.
- 4:00Jesse was an old man at that time, and he had eight sons.
- 4:04Jesse's three older sons, Eliab, Abinadab and Shemya, had already
- 4:10joined Saul's army to fight the Philistines.
- 4:13David was the youngest son. David's three oldest brothers
- 4:17stayed with Saul's army, but David went back and forth so he
- 4:21could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem.
- 4:24For 40 days. Every morning and evening, the
- 4:27Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army.
- 4:32One day, Jessie said to David. Take this basket of roasted
- 4:37grain and these 10 loaves of bread and carry them quickly to
- 4:41your brothers and give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain.
- 4:46See how your brothers are getting along and bring back a
- 4:49report on how they are doing. David's brothers were with Saul
- 4:53and the Israelite army at the valley of Elah, fighting against
- 4:56the Philistines. Sir David left the sheep with
- 4:59another shepherd and set out early the next morning with the
- 5:02gifts as Jesse had directed him. He arrived at the camp just as
- 5:07the Israelite army was leaving for the battlefield with shouts
- 5:10and battle cries. Soon the Israelite and
- 5:13Philistine forces stood facing each other, army against army.
- 5:18David left his things with the keeper of supplies and hurried
- 5:21out to the ranks to greet his brothers.
- 5:24As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion
- 5:27from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks.
- 5:31Then David heard him shout his usual taunt to the army of
- 5:35Israel. As soon as the Israelite army
- 5:38saw him, they began to run away and fright.
- 5:41Have you seen the giant? The men asked.
- 5:44He comes out each day to defy Israel.
- 5:47The king has offered a huge reward to anyone who kills him.
- 5:51He will give that man one of his daughters for a wife, and the
- 5:54man's entire family will be exempt from paying taxes?
- 5:59David asked the soldiers standing nearby what will a man
- 6:03get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of
- 6:06Israel? Who is this Pagan Philistine
- 6:09anyway? And he is allowed to defy the
- 6:11armies of the living God. And these men gave David the
- 6:16same reply. They said yes, that is the
- 6:19reward for killing him. But when Dave's oldest brother,
- 6:23Eliab, heard David talking to the man, he was angry.
- 6:27What are you doing around here anyway?
- 6:29He demanded. What about those few sheep
- 6:32you're supposed to be taking care of?
- 6:34I know about your pride and deceit.
- 6:37You just want to see the battle. What have I done now?
- 6:41David replied. I was only asking a question.
- 6:44He walked over to some others and asked them the same thing
- 6:48and received the same answer. Then David's question was
- 6:51reported to King Saul, and the king sent for him.
- 6:56Don't worry about this, Philistine.
- 6:58David told Saul. I'll go fight him.
- 7:01Don't be ridiculous, Soul replied.
- 7:04There's no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly
- 7:07win. You're only a boy, and he's been
- 7:10a man of war since his youth. But David persisted.
- 7:14I've been taking care of my father's sheep and goats, he
- 7:18said. When a lion or a bear comes to
- 7:20steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and
- 7:23rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I
- 7:27catch it by the jaw and club it to death.
- 7:30I've done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this
- 7:33Pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the
- 7:37living God The Lord, who rescued me from the claws of the lion
- 7:42and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine soul.
- 7:46Finally consented. All right, go ahead, he said.
- 7:50And may the Lord be with you. Then Saul gave David his own
- 7:55armour, a bronze helmet and a coat of mail.
- 7:59David put it on, strap the sword over it, and took a step or two
- 8:03to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things
- 8:06before. I can't go in these, he
- 8:09protested the Saw. I'm not used to them.
- 8:12Sir. David took them off again.
- 8:14He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into
- 8:18his shepherd's bag. Then, armed only with his
- 8:21shepherd's staff and sling, he started across the valley to
- 8:25fight the Philistine. Goliath walked out toward David
- 8:30with his shield bearer ahead of him, sneering in contempt of
- 8:33this Ruddy faced boy. Am I a dog?
- 8:37He roared at David. That you come at me with a
- 8:40stick, and he cursed David by yelling the name of his gods.
- 8:45Come over here and I'll give your flesh to the birds and wild
- 8:49animals, Goliath yelled. David replied to the Philistine.
- 8:54You come to me with swords, spear, and javelin, but I come
- 8:59to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven's armies, the God of
- 9:03the armies of Israel whom you have defiled today.
- 9:08The Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your
- 9:12head. And then I will give the dead
- 9:16bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole
- 9:20world will know that there is a God in Israel.
- 9:25And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his
- 9:29people, but not with sword and spear.
- 9:32This is the Lord's battle, and he will give you to us.
- 9:37As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to
- 9:42meet him, reaching into his shepherd's bag and taking out a
- 9:45stone. He held it with his sling and
- 9:48hit the Philistine in the forehead.
- 9:51The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on
- 9:57the ground. So David triumphed over the
- 10:00Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.
- 10:05Then David ran over and pulled Goliath sword from its sheath.
- 10:10David used it to kill him and cut off his head.
- 10:15When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they
- 10:19turned and ran. Then the men of Israel and Judah
- 10:22gave a great shout of triumph, and rushed after the
- 10:25Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron.
- 10:30The bodies of the dead and wounded Philistines were strewn
- 10:34all along the road from Shahram as far as Gath and Ekron.
- 10:39Then the Israelite army returned and plundered the deserted
- 10:43Philistine camp. David took the Philistines head
- 10:46to Jerusalem, but he stored the man's armour in his own tent.
- 10:52As Saul watched David go out to fight the Philistine, he asked
- 10:56Abner, the commander of his army, Abna, whose son is this
- 11:01young man? I really don't know, Abner
- 11:05declared. Well, find out who he is, the
- 11:09king told him. As soon as David returned from
- 11:13killing Goliath, Abner brought him to Saul, and the
- 11:16Philistines, head still in his hand.
- 11:19Tell me about your father, young man, Saul said, and David
- 11:23replied. His name is Jesse and we live in
- 11:27Bethlehem. Lord, what a wonderful story for
- 11:40us. So often we look up and we see
- 11:44what feels like insurmountable odds, an army of Philistines
- 11:49facing us down, and we think that we need to battle them.
- 11:54But here you remind us that we need to rest in you.
- 12:00And when we don't feel powerful, your power is enough.
- 12:05And when we don't feel wise, your wisdom is enough.
- 12:10And when we just have nothing left to give, your reserves are
- 12:16never dry. Father, help us rest in the
- 12:22shore provision of you and your presence in our life.
- 12:27We don't have to do this life alone, But there you are beside
- 12:31us, with your arms wrapped around us, giving us what we
- 12:35need in each moment, so that we can shine a light audaciously
- 12:40into the darkness, declaring you as our Lord.
- 12:45And we thank you for Jesus, in whose name we pray.
- 12:49All of this. Amen.
