- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the iN team series and your daily influence and today's topic is about creating smart objectives not goals but objectives and I think the clear distinction today that I want to make early is.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: why the change, why the shift from goals to objectives, and I can be really clear about that as you know in our area of influence, we don't like to use words that imply negativity or missing the point for example, we don't like change, we like improvement.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: The same goes for goals
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: goals often carry a connotation of hope, aspiration, even wishful thinking.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of goals aren't met because they're thought of in that way yet.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: objectives are actionable, measurable, and they align with what the true essence of what smart really is.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we've built this whole management program.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: Everything we teach at IAM at the IAM team series lays foundationally on top of smart.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: And why we use objectives is it does imply intentionality, it's the precise, they're actionable, objectives are tied to specific outcomes and they can build on each other.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: If we have an objective to get somewhere and along the way we need to add more it's easy instead of adding more goals.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: So our conversations become easier and more consistent.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: And it also resonates with smart
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: attainable, relevant and timely.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: That core philosophy resonates better with objectives than it does, truly, with goals.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: And finally, it really does address the psychological perception we have, objective, suggest accountability.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: a roadmap for execution.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas goals can feel abstract or even distant, there's some place way over there.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: And when we think about understanding smart as a framework for objectives, it's important that we remember at specific.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: The specific objectives define the what and the why.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of saying we want to increase sales,
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: We would say achieve a 15% increase in sales revenue within six months through a targeted marketing campaign.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: Those are specifics.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: They lay out an objective for us to get to, not just to go, but actually a path of tactical way.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: In the measurables, they establish benchmarks.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: Not just for what we want to be, but how are we measuring ourselves on the path to our objective.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, each milestone itself can be a measurable and an objective both that helps us measure to get their better.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: They can help our teams quantify and qualify.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I believe that it leads to success more often instead of what we get with goals, which is sometimes failures more often.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: Also, objectives laid out this way,
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: help to ensure realism in practicality.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: They encourage breaking larger ambitions into smaller actionable objectives or steps.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: And when we do this, and we can see these micro objectives, leading us to a larger objective.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: and the path that it's going to take us and what's it going to take to get us those micro objectives.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: It actually helps us understand how it aligns with our larger business, what we're trying to get to what our vision might be as leaders as managers and the objectives can integrate into bigger pictures and it makes it easier for them to digest and to work with.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: And it also makes them not only part of a strategy but also part of our
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then, timely anchors them in a timeframe to challenge us, set deadlines, create objective goals, if you will, objective placeholders in time.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: because goals often times become perpetual.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: If we don't make it, we just kick it down the road.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, we just sweep it under the rug, where objectives make us actually really drive to a point.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: And language matters.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: It does shape our mindset.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: words influence us as do the actions and if the words can support the actions all the better objective fosters focus while goal can unintentionally allow us to have complacency.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: We can set it aside, put it in our back pocket, sweep it under the run.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Objectives position us as proactive achievers rather than hopeful dreamers, and our cultural alignment can really change by shifting to the word objectives and creating smart objectives for us and for our teams, and aligning it with an overall smart management and smart communication program.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: We lean into accountability.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it will support Team White Clarity, where everybody understands their role, their objectives, in the goal of achieving all of the objectives to get to the largest one.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: thinking to change our mindset from goals to objectives, leave into it, ask yourself, are your goals actionable objectives or are they just hopes?
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: I challenge you to reframe one of your goals.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: or two as a smart objective.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: And highlight the advantages within your projects, within your tactics, within your strategies, where you can create more clarity and inspire more confidence by providing a more direct,
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: attainable, accountable, objective path to where you want to be.
