- 0:15You started a panic on a public beach. You shot up the damn place.
- 0:19God knows who you could have injured.
- 0:21Now, what if somebody decides to sue us? Did you ever stop to think about that? It could ruin us.
- 0:26You don't have to worry about being sued or being ruined. If this turns out
- 0:29to be what I think it is, because there won't be anybody here.
- 0:31Yeah, now, Martin, let's not, uh... Let's not what, Larry? What?
- 0:34Oh, Jesus, Larry, huh? Come on, let's just forget it. He won't listen.
- 0:38It's obvious the man has made up his mind. You bet your life I made up my mind.
- 0:41But I'm telling you, and I'm telling everybody at this table,
- 0:43that that's a shark. and I know what a shark looks like because I've seen one
- 0:46up close and you better do something about this one because I don't intend to
- 0:50go through that hell again.
- 0:51All right, people, right, come back. You know, it's exciting episode of Citizen
- 0:54Freight. Now, I did mention in the last podcast we weren't going to talk Jaws
- 0:582, but then I figured, ah, fuck it, I've already watched it.
- 1:02I don't want to watch another one yet, so we're going to do Jaws 2. Yeah, why not?
- 1:07It's still not CF. We really have no fucking structure here,
- 1:10so fuck off if you don't want to listen to Jaws 2.
- 1:13And you know what? I'll tell you what. I'll tell you what right now.
- 1:17This movie gets a bum rap. 5.9 or something in the IMD.
- 1:20Listen, people. We know we're not getting jobs. Funny story here.
- 1:24Funny story time. Story time by Kieran. Jack and Ori.
- 1:27What the fuck was that? Jack and Ori. You know, you obviously haven't heard
- 1:31of Jack and Ori, which was an iconic British kids series.
- 1:34Oh, my God. Where celebrities used to tell stories to kids.
- 1:38Well, it was very atmospheric. Freaking.
- 1:42No, they used to have people like Kenneth Williams from the carry on film.
- 1:45Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody is listening to this.
- 1:50Our numbers from the States have fucking skyrocketed and they're like,
- 1:54what's the fuck's a carry on film? I don't know.
- 1:57I'm educating them. You know, I'm introducing them to iconic British atmospheric stuff.
- 2:04Sick and fuck off. And the carry on film. It's my podcast. Sorry,
- 2:07Trevor couldn't make it today.
- 2:11So anyways we talk sequels a lot here I just saw Meg 2.0,
- 2:16and we'll probably get to Meg 2.0 in Halloween month because we did the first
- 2:20one they went basket crazy yeah I haven't seen it yet but I heard it's nuts,
- 2:25so what I what I respected about it and,
- 2:31The guys from Jaws, same producers, okay, same writers.
- 2:36We got our boy Carl Guttele back and Howard Sackler. We got John Williams back.
- 2:42We got the key core crew back, actor-wise and actress-wise.
- 2:47We got Zanuck and Brown back to produce.
- 2:50You kept it in the family, which I'm fair with, which I'm cool with.
- 2:54Now they even said there's
- 2:58no way we were going to beat Jaws or
- 3:01try to even try to compete with
- 3:04Jaws okay they knew that
- 3:07going in so what they even said
- 3:10we're not going to hide the shark what's the point
- 3:13it's been done so this one they
- 3:16said we're just going to go for broke up the
- 3:19budget up the body count and just
- 3:22go with it have fun yeah it was a
- 3:25cash grab of course 20 million in in
- 3:29budget 187 worldwide yeah apparently at the time it was like the most successful
- 3:35sequel ever i think things like obviously empire strikes back and stuff you
- 3:41know went on to beat it but at the time it did really well and there is a lot
- 3:45like about this and i am going to defend it
- 3:48as well it's basically a late
- 3:5270s early 80s slasher that sort
- 3:55of reminds me a bit of carrie as well with the younger cast
- 3:58members with a big shark instead of a knife-wielding maniac like jason vorhees
- 4:03airy yeah the young cast because it's just a look at them they look there's
- 4:10even one of the characters and one of the the teen yours that actually looks really like Sue Snell.
- 4:17I'm not saying in terms of the story, it's like Carrie obviously not,
- 4:20but it's just the young cast reminded me of the cast of Carrie.
- 4:25It's from around the same period. So we got,
- 4:28Oh yeah, I got it. What's that? Something just popped up. Blah,
- 4:31blah. I'm so fucking... I am so fucking sick of computer updates.
- 4:35Oh, I want to update... You know what? Remember the old days?
- 4:38I'm talking 10 years ago. Windows just did it by itself and leave you the fuck alone.
- 4:43Now, there's a fucking update every 30 seconds. Right? Jesus Christ. Right?
- 4:51Old man yells at cloud. You know?
- 4:55First world problems. ever see that thing from it's like a newspaper clipping
- 4:59from the Simpsons with the old
- 5:01grandpa and the headline is old man yells a cloud this is the case of this,
- 5:08fuck you I'm yelling a fucking technology not it's so advanced it's wonderful
- 5:14then fucking update yourself fuck alone,
- 5:18fucking bastards AI pricks alright back to Jaws 2,
- 5:28now this was directed by if I butcher I apologize he just recently passed Jano Schwark,
- 5:34he's actually got a couple big hits under his belt we did talk about one of
- 5:38his films which is terrible sorry buddy which was the Santa Claus with Dudley
- 5:43Moore and John Lithgow God,
- 5:46rest his soul that was God shite I said shite shite right was that God shite
- 5:52I spoke like you for a second there right That was more like a sort of Dublin
- 5:57accent You sounded more like You know the vampire,
- 6:01From Sinners there Oh that's cool I'll take it You sounded like Leprechaun Ah
- 6:06to be sure to be sure You don't have to shite,
- 6:10That's my wee pad of gold you wee bastard That was more of a Belfast accent Fuck you wee shite.
- 6:19A wee pot of gold, you fuck. Right. Right. I don't even know what that was.
- 6:24That was a good one. It's a speech impediment probably, but you know.
- 6:28All right, back to Jaws 2.
- 6:31Now, it's kind of funny. There was some wheeling and dealing going on.
- 6:34Nobody wanted to touch Jaws 2.
- 6:36And you know what? I get their point. I mean, come on. It's Jaws.
- 6:40Masterpiece, right? Oscar winner.
- 6:42It's very hard to jump on board on this.
- 6:45But so what they did was.
- 6:48There's a very, very successful romance drama that came out in 79, 80.
- 6:56Huge. And women love it. It's one of the most depressing fucking films I've ever seen.
- 7:01But it is pretty good. It's called Summer in Time with Christopher Reeve.
- 7:06And it also had Jane Seymour.
- 7:09A very beautiful Jane Seymour. It is one of the most depressing fucking films ever.
- 7:14But women love it. Women love, they seem to love romance movies where the lead guy dies.
- 7:23Titanic. Didn't he die in that? He did. Yeah. Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 7:28I don't know. Maybe they're trying to kill someone.
- 7:30Even though she was floating on a condo. Yeah. I mean, that's a ridiculous film
- 7:34anyway. I think that's the least of its problems.
- 7:37But at the end. No, the lead actor, the lead role romance always gets fucked over.
- 7:42Bridge of Hermas County. That's what happened. Never seen it.
- 7:45At Fatal Attraction, that poor bastard really got screwed over and the poor bunny.
- 7:49Well, yeah. Haven't seen that in years since it was like on TV.
- 7:54I'm like, oh my god, it's about long. Right?
- 7:58Okay. We do realize there's going to be all sorts of fucking complaints now. You know?
- 8:04There'll be hope that you get bumped off in Citizen Flame the movie.
- 8:08I'll bump him off, no problem.
- 8:10Pay me enough. In Citizen Flame the movie. In fact, you don't even have to pay me.
- 8:15Brad Perry called. He's playing me. Right.
- 8:18Yeah. All right, so back to Josh Duke. Go for it.
- 8:23So, yeah, so Jean-Anne Schwartz wanted to direct this film badly.
- 8:27It's a passion project of his.
- 8:29So he said, we'll budget that film if you direct Jaws 2. And he says, cool, I'll do it.
- 8:36And they had to kind of do the same thing with Roy Scheider.
- 8:38Now, I don't know what happened here. This is an interesting one.
- 8:41Roy Scheider wanted nothing to do with it. Roy Scheider wanted nothing to do
- 8:44with it. I'm sorry, I was just interrupted by a Muppet.
- 8:48But Roy Scheider left for some reason the deer hunter. Which is a big leave.
- 8:54You don't leave the deer hunter.
- 8:55But he still owed Universal two pictures.
- 8:58So Universal says, you do Jaws 2, we'll remove the two picture deal.
- 9:03You just have to do Jaws 2.
- 9:05He decided he was going to do it.
- 9:08Unfortunately, it was kind of a douche on the set. Didn't make things easy for
- 9:11people, which is not fair.
- 9:13But I will say this, in his defense, as later in his years before he's passing,
- 9:19he says he regrets that. And he says, I actually came around to the film.
- 9:25Later on in my years after viewing it a few times so
- 9:28at least he came at peace with the film i i've read that too
- 9:31apparently he was basically the deal was something along
- 9:34the lines of he basically walked from
- 9:37the deer hunter so obviously the studio were pissed over him walking but they
- 9:42said we'll forgive you and we'll sort things out for you if you can back and
- 9:46do jaws 2 i would say well you know what go ahead you know what you said he
- 9:51yeah they got pissed because he was walking but at At least the deer hermit
- 9:55got Christopher Walken.
- 9:57Well. Boom, boom. Uh-huh. Which is, well.
- 10:01Okay, you know what? I'm done. I'm fucking done with you, man.
- 10:03I am done. My humor is wasted on you.
- 10:06Wasted. That was a fucking good one. It was improv. Boom. Heat of the moment.
- 10:10I say it. He just went, oh, so like. And he just completely changed the subject.
- 10:15Not even giving a little that a boy with that classic Christopher Walken.
- 10:19Okay. Okay, Bob. Hope. Sorry. You know, you took that, bud.
- 10:24But anyway as I was about to say before it was rudely interrupted by a very
- 10:29aggressive and angry Muppet.
- 10:32Yeah if Roy Snyder was
- 10:35a douche on the set or he was quite in bad form you know throughout the filming
- 10:40of this I think it actually helps his performance because I love the route that
- 10:44the character takes in this where he becomes a Captain A-Hat type obsessed with
- 10:49the shark even though he's right I think I think it's a great character turn,
- 10:54and it's followed up with some great scenes and quite dark scenes.
- 10:59We'll jump into that in a moment about the character arcs and where they went
- 11:03from the first one to this one.
- 11:04I have a problem with the Mayors and with Ellens and we'll certainly talk about that soon here.
- 11:09As we jump into the cast of Jaws 2, we've got a regular team back,
- 11:14Roy Shatner playing Chief Brody. We've got Lorraine Gary playing Ellen Brody.
- 11:20We got our boy Murray Hallington back, who I like to see as Mayor Vaughn.
- 11:25And Jeffrey Kramer is back, who plays the sidekick Hendricks.
- 11:28Now we got the new douchebag, Joseph Mascolo, who plays Peterson.
- 11:33He's kind of like the new Vaughn, I guess you can say. And we got the data dump,
- 11:38the, I like to say, the cameo Hooper part, Dr. Elkins.
- 11:42Yes. And then we got the dipshits.
- 11:45All of the rest of them are dipshits? Essentially, like every single kind.
- 11:49There's two Napoleon Dynamites here as well, which was quite awesome. I saw that.
- 11:54So we got Tina, Mike, Andy, Jackie, Paul, O'Tommy, Larry, Doug,
- 11:59Brooke, Marge, Bob, Patrick, and Ed. These are all the dipshits.
- 12:02These are all going to be eaten, and I'm fine with that. You're kind of right.
- 12:06This is kind of like the slasher team you get from Friday the 13th about to get butchered.
- 12:10Yeah, I was 100% on the side of the shark any time they were on the screen.
- 12:14I would also say that Broody's deputy is an alert dipshit. So he is,
- 12:19and I want him to get killed.
- 12:21He's all right. He's all right. But I do want to give a little shout out to
- 12:25Doug. He was, this is one of his first roles.
- 12:29And he was the one reading the book and they threw the water balloon at him. Yes.
- 12:34He was the nerd. This guy called Keith Gordon.
- 12:37Now, Keith Gordon has a quite successful career as an actor in the 70s and 80s.
- 12:42He was in Dressed to Kill. He was the lead in Christine.
- 12:46He was the lead in Back to School. And then he ended up moving to directing
- 12:50where he did Wake in the Dead and a fucking great film called A Midnight Clear.
- 12:54And then he does piles of DTV from Dexter to Fargo to The Strain.
- 13:00So he's done well for himself, and it's nice to see him. Good on him. Yeah.
- 13:04Yeah, he just kind of made – just didn't want to do acting anymore and didn't
- 13:07want to do something different. Yeah. But there you go.
- 13:11Now, I do like – now, the opening sequence is nothing like the original.
- 13:15You're not going to top it.
- 13:16Like I mentioned at the beginning here, the filmmakers knew that.
- 13:20But I do like how they plant the seed a bit, and all it is is these photographers
- 13:23that get attacked by the shark.
- 13:25Yeah. And the music starts. We love our John Williams score.
- 13:30But it's pretty much just a little Easter egg that they're peppering in the
- 13:35beginning of the film because this camera is going to come back.
- 13:38Yeah, exactly. They're setting up the scene later on to basically clear Brody's
- 13:44name. Oh, it doesn't really, though.
- 13:45But it's basically, it's a plot device setting up scenes later on, essentially.
- 13:51But also we'll get a glimpse of the Orca from the original.
- 13:54Yeah, that's what I really did like.
- 13:57Pull the heartstrings a little bit. You saw the orca just sitting down there. Yeah.
- 14:02And so it was nice. I think their main thing was to, they weren't going to overdo it with the shark.
- 14:10What they wanted to do was a little nod to the hat from the original.
- 14:13It's the orca. Here's where it is. Here's where it lies.
- 14:17And it comes, you know, after the photographers get it. Yeah.
- 14:22They don't, what can I say? they don't oversell
- 14:25the scene no I would say they don't
- 14:28try to top the Chrissy scene I would say overall again
- 14:32it's obviously because of Spielberg not
- 14:35being here but I don't want to give a full
- 14:38review now but this scene is an example of a lack of tension I would say that
- 14:43the script here is actually really good but the direction wise for example with
- 14:49this opening scene there is a lack of tension that were got in the original
- 14:54with Spielberg. I don't think that was their point.
- 14:57I do think, no, the whole point was just to a little nod to the Orca,
- 15:01and then these guys get it, but it will come back to play.
- 15:05There's a point for this scene, not just a little, you know, wink.
- 15:08Yes, but if you're going to have a scene with the killer shark,
- 15:12you want to make it as tense and as scurry as possible.
- 15:17Yeah, I mean, you're right to an extent, but I think they can't go for that
- 15:24because they know they're not topping the original. Now, there's a jump scare
- 15:27in this one that's fucking brilliant. And I will say this.
- 15:31The upper game, what do you do for a horror sequel? You up the body count.
- 15:35And there's some decent scenes coming up here that I really enjoy.
- 15:38And there's a jump scare that scares the fuck out of me. One of the divers will
- 15:42talk about it. I know what you're talking about, yeah.
- 15:43It's a wonderful scene. And then the per cadet who gets it is a wonderful scene. Yeah.
- 15:47And then when Marge gets it, there's some really good stuff here.
- 15:51Yeah. Yeah. Again, like I say, I also think it's a really good idea,
- 15:56script-wise, to up the ante by putting kids in peril.
- 16:01It's basically all a bunch of kids here who are the main ones in danger,
- 16:06as I think that's a wise decision.
- 16:08Again, this script is solid.
- 16:11So, Ellen now, I think she's like party comedy girl. Yes. And she's working
- 16:16for this douchebag Peterson. She works for the council, basically.
- 16:19Yeah. Yeah, and we'll jump into that one a little in a moment here when the
- 16:25time's right, when he gets fired.
- 16:28And we'll talk more about their arcs there, which kind of throw me off and kind
- 16:31of does a little disservice to the original.
- 16:34Yeah. Now, there's a beautiful shot, and it's the best shot of the film.
- 16:38Yeah. And they're at the pool party, whatever they're doing,
- 16:42pool party, committee, whatever the fuck.
- 16:44That's a dance type thing? Yeah, or some kind of grand opening or something.
- 16:49Yeah, it's kind of like a prom, but with that old sir as well. That's fucking creepy.
- 16:56There's got this Amityville there. The Amity Island inbred. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:04See, it scenes like this genuinely reminded me of Carrie.
- 17:08I know, obviously, it's a completely different story, but I was just thinking, Carrie?
- 17:15I never really thought about it. No big deal. No big deal. And Tweets Row.
- 17:21I still can't believe you didn't appreciate that Christopher Walken thing.
- 17:24It was all right. It was not. That was fucking good. Don't give up the day, Joe. Fucking good.
- 17:28Don't give up the day, Joe. I mean, I guarantee our listening audience is going, ha, ha, ha.
- 17:33Kieran, they are so class. Why is that deuce Trevor not understanding?
- 17:38Yeah, exactly. I'm sure they are. Wow. More like a little in their eyes.
- 17:43Isn't Sam, what the fuck?
- 17:44You know what? I want people to, you better fucking write in, people.
- 17:48I'll say it again. It's citizenframe underscore podcast on Instagram or reach out on Facebook.
- 17:53You know what? Here's our personal email. Say them hate me.
- 17:57It's citizenframe at outlook.com. And I will see every email.
- 18:02Send me an email. Say if I want you to hate him.
- 18:04Say them hate me to save me the hassle of doing it myself.
- 18:08See? No, because they're all like, God, you're so funny and clever.
- 18:11And we really appreciate you. Let's shake it up a bit and have someone else
- 18:15send them to hate mail instead of me. Why not?
- 18:19Anyways, back to Josh too. Back to the big show. This is the longest podcast
- 18:23ever. Yeah. Longest podcast ever.
- 18:25But anyways, it's a night shot. It's night and we're in the harbor of Amity.
- 18:30Amity. Amity. I just call it Amityville as well, even though it's Amity.
- 18:35I know, it's Amity. It's Amity Island.
- 18:37Yeah. And so, and you see this boat just sitting there floating.
- 18:41It's nice and calm. but all of a sudden you see the boat moving so
- 18:45you know our little boy he's got a little bite of the boat yes and
- 18:48then the camera pans down over the night
- 18:51ocean and shallow waters because you're near the shore yeah and you can see
- 18:57it's beautifully lit the the white the gray shadow of the what what you think
- 19:02is a shark and it's a gorgeous i mean literally a gorgeous shot of the whole shark.
- 19:09And then you see the fin come up. Yep. And then the fin, you see the town on
- 19:15the island. You see the town as the fin rises, meaning our boy's back or junior,
- 19:21whatever you want to call it.
- 19:22It's a great shot and it's a nice way of reintroducing the shark to the town.
- 19:27By the way, I would say that part of the Jaws films were filmed on a set for
- 19:32Amity Island and I actually visited it back in 2017.
- 19:37I mean, you say that, but Everyone has.
- 19:40Everyone's done Universal Studios. Everyone has. Who gives a fuck?
- 19:44Not everyone has. Yeah, see? See? Did it make you feel good?
- 19:47Does that make you feel good, me saying that? No, it doesn't, does it?
- 19:51What I would have said was, wow. What I would have said was,
- 19:55wow, Trevor. Like being attacked.
- 19:56Wow. I would just be like, see, you're still talking. See, I can't even finish
- 19:59my sentence. Can't even finish my sentence. What the point was.
- 20:02Try your eyes. What the point was.
- 20:03It's hurtful, isn't it, when someone just dismantles a comedy made?
- 20:06What I could have said, wow, that's really amazing. Did you enjoy yourself?
- 20:10No, I wasn't going to do that because I'm just going to pounce on you like you
- 20:13do if I quit some walking joke.
- 20:15Your walking joke was shit. Fuck, that was a classic.
- 20:20Get over it. Back to Jaws 2. Get over it. Back to Jaws 2. Yeah, again.
- 20:27I wish the fuck you weren't on the island whenever the shark came out paddling.
- 20:34With your rubber rings on.
- 20:37There's a funny line. And what I do like about the reintroduction to the town
- 20:41after we see that beautiful shot, the shark coming to town, he's coming to town. Yep.
- 20:47Is just the banter between everyone, between Ellen and Brody and between Hendrix and Brody.
- 20:54And even, I mean, there's just, they're all the same, the same cast and crew,
- 20:58and they're all just shooting the shit.
- 21:00And they're just back to what they do in their normal routines after beating
- 21:04the shark four years ago.
- 21:06And there's some playful banter like he did in the original.
- 21:09It doesn't have as much in this one. The writing's a little more sharper on the last one.
- 21:15But there's some great dialogue. There's one where Hendrix finds the camera.
- 21:22And he goes to Brody. Brody goes, where'd you get that? It was at the abandoned cruiser.
- 21:27He goes, Jesus, if I had a 100 grand cruiser, I wouldn't leave it abandoned.
- 21:30And then Hedrick says, if you had 100 grand, there'll be an investigation.
- 21:34No, I mean, there is. But it's banter, quick banter like that that we had in
- 21:38the original that they do pepper in back in this one.
- 21:41I would say that again, it goes back to this is a solid script but what it's not I mean,
- 21:47there's a couple of things at least that it's not as good as the original with
- 21:50and that's character development apart from the Brody character who has great
- 21:55character development in terms of the dark sort of road that he Goes down,
- 21:59I mean obviously it's not too dark It's not possum, put it like that But I really
- 22:03liked The character arc For Brody here.
- 22:09Yeah, and the problem with the character arcs here, you're not going to get
- 22:11many of them. You're not going to get it. You're not going to get Hendrix.
- 22:15He's still kind of a whiny nerd.
- 22:17And the dipshits. Who cares about the fucking dipshits? Yeah,
- 22:20they're just sharp, mate. Yeah.
- 22:22Yeah, and that was kind of the problem. They were all likable.
- 22:26They were all there to help each other.
- 22:28None of them was really a dick that you wanted to see get it.
- 22:31You never really give us that villain.
- 22:34Yeah, yeah. There was never like a bully or anything. They were all just sort of dumb kids.
- 22:38And yes they are annoying and yes they're sort of rooting for the shark because
- 22:42you want to see a bit of gore and a bit of action as well but yeah I mean,
- 22:47in terms of the writing of their characters again
- 22:51it goes back to so many slicers that it is
- 22:54lightweight in terms of characterization but I don't think they're really there
- 22:59to be well thought out sort of characters they're there to be shark bait and
- 23:04because they're a bunch of kids and two of them are Brody's kids that sort of
- 23:08does up the ante in terms of the conflict and the drama,
- 23:12yeah and that's my point I can understand why
- 23:15people don't like the film because and that's the key reason right there
- 23:18also the movie's two hours long and I think and there's a couple elongated scenes
- 23:25couple scenes with the boats floating around yes yada yada yada but again like
- 23:32the last one I wouldn't end up much out of it I would like to have seen.
- 23:37More continuity that we got in the original.
- 23:39I mean by that, I just don't like the way Brody's treated here.
- 23:44By the same people that he saved from last time. I know that.
- 23:49I mean, it goes back to Vaughn being like, a deck again, but that's okay because
- 23:54he is a deck. No, but that no, it's not okay.
- 23:57Because when there has to be conflict, but in terms of the script.
- 24:04There doesn't. There are no, there doesn't. Of course there does.
- 24:07Let me, can I finish? Go ahead. My point is.
- 24:11The best art, I think, well, actually, Quint, when he realizes he fucked up,
- 24:16is probably the best one.
- 24:17But, no, mine was, I said this, was Vaughn's, the mayor, because that's when
- 24:23he, you know, when the disaster happens, he tells the parole,
- 24:27my kids were on that beach too.
- 24:29And right there was his art. Right there was this guy got it.
- 24:33He finally had to take a hit.
- 24:35Oh, the town folk had to take a hit. He guessed what he did wrong.
- 24:39And this one he's like oh come on
- 24:41man there's not another shark but he's the same guy and
- 24:44it's like wait a minute no no no you need to be sticking up
- 24:47for him i get what you're saying you need you needed
- 24:50you know what you needed you need peterson and the
- 24:53rest of the committee to fire vaughn for sticking
- 24:56up for brody yes that would have been perfect the the
- 24:59reason the reason basically they got murray hamilton back and
- 25:02apparently he had to fill him at scenes quite quickly because his wife
- 25:05was ill so they had murray hamilton back so i
- 25:08think you know they wanted something to give him the character
- 25:12something to do there has to be some sort of conflict but i agree that they
- 25:16could have had it maybe with one of the other council committee members you
- 25:21know being the deck yes yes of course yes but yeah i get that he hasn't learned
- 25:28any lessons from the first film and there is a lack of continuity there.
- 25:32He basically resorts back to being an asshole.
- 25:35But, you know, if you're going to put the character Vaughn in the film,
- 25:39I sort of want to see him being Vaughn and being an asshole.
- 25:44Now you've got Peterson and him. And quite frankly, you have Ellen doubting him now too.
- 25:50And it's like, come on.
- 25:53Okay, this guy needs to be given a chance to be heard here. And he clearly gives
- 25:59him a picture, which is clearly a fucking shark.
- 26:04What's this nonsense to turn around and say is that seaweed it's a fucking shark
- 26:08face I mean what are they talking about seaweed.
- 26:14It's,
- 26:16At least they could have said something like, well, it looks a bit like a dolphin
- 26:19or something, but seaweed? What? You know?
- 26:23But for the Brody character, there has to be some sort of conflict in terms
- 26:31of other people opposing him.
- 26:32I understand that. But all it was was one line fix.
- 26:37Vaughn goes, give us time. We're going to talk about this. Next scene,
- 26:41he comes home drunk. He's been fired.
- 26:43All they needed was one scene where Vaughn meets him in the office. I did what I could.
- 26:49And Vaughn goes, I stepped away myself. And you know what's a great scene?
- 26:53That's all. That's it. Murray's gone. He's written out.
- 26:56But man, he stuck to his guns. He stuck up for Brody, which he didn't in the
- 27:01first one. And he regrets. You know what's a great scene? That's the same in bed.
- 27:04I watched this years ago as a kid on TV for the first time, when I was a young kid.
- 27:09And I couldn't remember much of it.
- 27:12But the two scenes that I could remember are the one which has always stuck
- 27:17out in my head where they find a dead whale on the beach,
- 27:21that's eaten, it's all gory and stuff but also the scene where Brody is basically
- 27:26whenever he's obsessed with the whole shark thing whenever he shoots up the
- 27:31beach basically you know,
- 27:33let's get some fired let's quickly talk about.
- 27:40The skier scene the water skier. Yes. She gets eaten. Yeah, they've got this
- 27:46as well. But I do love the dumbass driver.
- 27:49Yeah. The shark's coming, she picks up gasoline to do whatever to it.
- 27:54She ends up pouring it on herself and then getting a flare gun.
- 27:57The absolute stupidity of so many of the characters here. You know what I mean?
- 28:01She literally, yeah, and then the boat. The shark doesn't even kill her.
- 28:06Her own stupidity of blowing up the boat and pouring petrol for herself kills her.
- 28:13It's like, you know The shark doesn't even have to bother,
- 28:18The shark was sitting there reading a book Watching this bitch On fire By the
- 28:22way, I really liked the look of the shark In this one, with the burnt face After this explosion,
- 28:28I think that's pretty true They kept true to that And they definitely fixed
- 28:32a lot of cosmetics That was a problem with the first one And that's why they
- 28:36wanted to show up more Because they invested more What went wrong,
- 28:40Or you can say it right because there was a blessing went wrong in the first one.
- 28:43They decided they're going to show it, so they put a lot of work into the shark
- 28:46in getting it right. So kudos to that.
- 28:49But I think it's funny. Ed and Tina have witnessed everything that's happening here.
- 28:52They witnessed the dead whale, the orca thing, and then they witnessed the skier,
- 28:58disappearing in the water and the boat blowing up.
- 29:00Yeah. So Ed and Tina, and then Ed gets his demise wonderfully.
- 29:04But there's this scene where we meet Dr.
- 29:07Elkins and very smart woman and she talks about the shark bites and who it could
- 29:14be and Brody wants it to be a shark almost he almost wants it to be which is
- 29:19creepy he wants to be right, he's obsessed yeah.
- 29:22And so but she says you don't understand this could have been these wounds aren't that older,
- 29:29the shark could have been bitten miles away and the current brought the whale in.
- 29:38She's trying to be smart with him. And there's a great line where she goes,
- 29:42Brody's kind of losing the plot at this point.
- 29:44And he goes, well, I heard dolphins can communicate with each other.
- 29:47Do you think if the shark blew up? And she cuts him off and goes,
- 29:50no, sharks don't take things personally.
- 29:53Yeah. But the two in the other films, in the later sequence. Oh, yeah.
- 29:57Until we, part four. Yeah. Wow. The revenge, this time it's personal.
- 30:00Well, this is the cousin's nephew's brother of shark number one.
- 30:05Sentient shark that is pissed off because of its family getting killed in earlier films.
- 30:11But jumping back to what you said about where he's now putting the sodium cyanide
- 30:16in these hollow point bullets. He's turning the rumble.
- 30:19And he's now on these lookup towers. Yeah.
- 30:23And he loses it and he screams shark, shark, get out of the water,
- 30:28get out of the water. He shoots the fish.
- 30:31Yeah and but again it's almost
- 30:35like they're trying to reflect on the scene where i really liked in the first
- 30:37one where he realized michael's in the pond the
- 30:40shark might be in the pond and he starts going faster and faster and
- 30:43faster you know and we're running with him as the jaw scene picks up it's a
- 30:47really nice little scene this one i didn't feel anything i just felt i actually
- 30:53really liked it and i didn't i thought there was no tension there was no i think
- 30:58we should have played on it more to where we actually think there's some harm coming.
- 31:02But from the distance, when he sees it, even I would say, oh, that's something else.
- 31:08It's a dark replay of the scene you're talking about from the first film,
- 31:11but I think actually this dark route
- 31:15that the character has gone down is actually the best part of Jaws 2.
- 31:19And this is the sort of highlight of it with this scene where he goes nuts and shoots up the baits.
- 31:25Yeah, no, I don't mind the act itself. The lead up to the lead up to the act
- 31:30and the way the act's handled is not just, well, I mean, really,
- 31:35you could have fooled the audience better with that.
- 31:37I think possibly they could have
- 31:39had more and more build up with the Brody character basically losing it.
- 31:44But the problem is he had a lot of other characters to juggle,
- 31:46especially the teenagers and also the council committee members.
- 31:51So I would have liked more focus on the Brody character personally,
- 31:55but that's not what we've got.
- 31:59The best jump scare moment is the divers that are just diving in the water for a while there.
- 32:06And one diver separates and he's got this clearing next to him on the left and
- 32:12I didn't even see it coming.
- 32:13It just comes out of nowhere and it's a full-on image of the shark. Yes.
- 32:17And it is an underwater shot too, which would be hard to do.
- 32:21And it's actually very good. Didn't see it coming. Well, I saw it coming. I just didn't know when.
- 32:27Or what they did was they elongated the scene a bit. I was like,
- 32:30okay, this is dragging a bit. So you're kind of getting kind of bored a little
- 32:33bit. Yeah, what's happening here?
- 32:34Yeah. Yeah, what's going on for the scene? What's the point? And then, boom.
- 32:39It's timed well, actually. And it definitely wakes you up to let you know this
- 32:43is the final act coming up. Yep.
- 32:45Which is basically Brody's sons going out with their mates, even though Brody's
- 32:51older son, the 17-year-old one, has been grounded because he's got a job.
- 32:55And Brody's a douche to him, but it all makes sense because he's just generally
- 32:59being a douche and he's worried, you know?
- 33:01I mean, I do like... I thought the film kind of could have been long sometimes,
- 33:06and I felt like that maybe because I wasn't into a lot of the characters because
- 33:09a lot of them were dealing with the stupid dipshits.
- 33:12But what I felt, though, you kind of needed it because you see the opening scene
- 33:18with the photographers.
- 33:18Well, that comes back into play with the camera, the image that he gets.
- 33:23You get the wonderful jump scare with the other divers.
- 33:27But that has to come, that comes back because Brody follows the ambulance that
- 33:31he's, the guy's going to be picked up in and he finds out they don't know what
- 33:36it was but he figures out there's definitely a shark out here.
- 33:40That's where he finds out Michael and Sean his kids have gone to take the boat
- 33:45out so each scene whether you think it's relevant or not actually is.
- 33:50No, no, I know what you're saying but I personally think it would have worked better.
- 33:54I think I'm going to be really to review what we are given but
- 33:57i think one of the letdowns for me you know we're sort
- 34:00of joking about the dipshits i mean being on on the side of the shark and stuff
- 34:04but genuinely in terms of the tension and threat and overall drama i think more
- 34:10deaths by the shark of the dipshits would have increased the stakes more and
- 34:16it would have been more edge of your seat.
- 34:19I think. Yeah, there's a little too many of those moments where they fall in
- 34:23the water, and the shark's about to get them, and he pulls them up just a time. Exactly.
- 34:27And also, I would say, there's too many of the dipshits as well.
- 34:30If they had it just focused on maybe five of them instead of,
- 34:32I don't know, what is there, 10 of them or something?
- 34:35They did, again, going back to what I said about peppering the small moments
- 34:39that matter that we don't think do at the time, I just mentioned in the beginning
- 34:43of the pod, you got Ed and Tina.
- 34:45These are the two dipshits that fall in the whale. to two dipshits that saw
- 34:49the skier blowing up, whatever.
- 34:50Yeah. And yet, but they're the ones, when Ed does get it, I felt sorry for that kid.
- 34:56That was a terrible way to go. I know, but I want to borrow that.
- 34:59I know, I'm not arguing that, but that is an effective scene.
- 35:04It is probably one of the best kills in all the jaws.
- 35:06It's when he grabs him and just drags him to the boat and you can hear him smack.
- 35:12Yeah. And then he pops up screaming, help me, help me, help me.
- 35:15He's trying to find his breath and he just gets gulped. thunder and
- 35:18there's tina who sells it really nicely is she a
- 35:21good actress she she did a nice job she did
- 35:24a nice job they all they actually did their they've all done
- 35:26their job but and i wanted more of that and we do we do get another great death
- 35:32when morgan when sean falls in the water she self-sacrifices herself to get
- 35:38him up on this boat and sean's a little kid and she literally gets engulfed by the shark.
- 35:45I think that's the best death actually in the entire film.
- 35:49It's terrifying because there's a shot where Sean, well there's a shot when
- 35:53Sean sees her getting engulfed.
- 35:55He's literally seeing her being eaten so cold. I know.
- 35:59I wish we saw that. Yeah, and not just because we're sick freaks and like our
- 36:03gore and all that, but I did want more of that because it really would have
- 36:06raised the stakes, genuinely.
- 36:09So, and again, back to the dipshits, in their defense, The actresses playing
- 36:13them are all solid There's nobody really lets the side down In terms of acting here,
- 36:19Well, they're not bad at all. I just don't like them. I just want them eating.
- 36:23But that's to do with the writing of them.
- 36:25And you know what? Teenagers are irritating and annoying anyway.
- 36:29So, you know, who wants a sensible teenager in a slasher or a killer shark film?
- 36:35It wouldn't work. That's the whole point.
- 36:39Let's talk about the batshit crazy scene. Which one?
- 36:46The chopper. Oh, yes, yes. Yeah.
- 36:51Now, am I the only one? I fucking love this scene. It's shot well. It's funny about them.
- 36:58When the shark grabs it and starts pulling it under, and then the minute the
- 37:04blades hit the water, they fly.
- 37:06Now, this sounds sick and morbid, but I'm saying it now. Now,
- 37:09the blades fly, and they cut up the boat, causing a little more ruckus with
- 37:12the little raft they had to make with all these different boats.
- 37:16But I would like to have seen one of those blades go right through one of their fucking heads,
- 37:21No, I know guys, I know you think but let's see a death that's not the shark,
- 37:28I mean, fair enough, I mean, I know you've got issues,
- 37:31and you probably need some sort of psychiatric help but I suppose in your defense
- 37:37it would work in terms of in terms of raising the stakes yeah,
- 37:43so yeah, wasted opportunity night.
- 37:47Am I wrong? Like that annoying one, Jackie, who kept fucking screaming the whole
- 37:51time. The problem is, the problem is it's a summer's golf course.
- 37:53Put a blade in her chest. It's not an 18 certificate.
- 37:55It's not actually an 18 certificate slasher. But okay.
- 37:59Even better. Got it. Here we go. Go ahead. The blade comes at us, right?
- 38:03But then all of a sudden, you see Jackie's body just fly and she hits the water.
- 38:08And she's floating down in the water with the blade sticking out of her.
- 38:11You don't have to see her penetrate. I'm classy.
- 38:13You don't have to see her penetrate. but then you see all the blood coming and
- 38:17then the shark just Right, right.
- 38:20Yeah, well, yeah like a scalping with a helicopter blade and then our dead remains
- 38:25eaten by a shark Yeah, I mean, I'm up to that What's the problem?
- 38:31I've seen worse There's a cut scene and you can watch it on the 4K.
- 38:35I don't know why they just don't put it back in They actually It works.
- 38:41I don't know what they said, why they cut it Maybe for peace When the chopper
- 38:45is brought down, we see the pilot inside the little cockpit. Yeah.
- 38:53And the shark gets into the cockpit, the side of it, and grabs him.
- 38:57Maybe the shuttle, but FIAC, I haven't seen this thing. I don't know.
- 39:00You can probably YouTube it.
- 39:02Yeah. But I don't know. I'd like to have seen that. But it was a good shot because
- 39:06there's a pilot. They're helping him.
- 39:09Okay, this is cool. They're going to be all right. And then I didn't see that.
- 39:13Fucking takes it down. So funny. Oh, Josh.
- 39:22Yeah. Then he got brought, he comes to save the day. You know, I,
- 39:27Yeah, you're probably right with Brody because Brody's in the original freight
- 39:31of water, doesn't like boats, blah, blah, blah.
- 39:34Now he's commanding a boat by himself. He's Rambo on water, basically.
- 39:40Yeah. With electric cables that are onto the sea and all sorts.
- 39:45I would say I did enjoy watching the death of the shark with the electric cable.
- 39:50I thought that. Yeah. Open wide. You say, ah. Open wide, motherfucker.
- 39:56Elka, that's what he missed.
- 39:59And it, because he remembers when Dr. Elkin says, well, they're attracted to sound.
- 40:05Yes. It's set up. Yeah. It's set up earlier. We even see. And then so is the cabling.
- 40:10So is the cabling. Yeah, I know. That's set up. But again, each scene is set
- 40:14up properly. It's a good script.
- 40:16Yeah. Whether you think the scene is necessary or not, they are telling you
- 40:20something, whether you catch it or not, it's going to be relevant.
- 40:23They're formatting the plot.
- 40:24Exactly. how they're setting up stuff for later on. Again, script is solid.
- 40:28Yeah, and our boy saves the day. And I like the shark's eyes are on fire and
- 40:32smoking. It's a great death, yeah.
- 40:35I can't expect any sort of horror slicer elements.
- 40:38You know what I mean? At the end of every slicer, the bad guy has to have a
- 40:42cool death, and the bad guy here, the shark, does.
- 40:46Ah, Jaws 2. I like it. I like it, guys. I'm sorry.
- 40:50I can't get mad at it. I enjoy this film. I own it. I have it on 4K.
- 40:54I enjoy it. I can watch it again.
- 40:57I have no problem with this movie at all. Don't keep me wrong.
- 41:00It's not Jaws. It's not even close to Jaws. It lacks attention.
- 41:02But fuck, it's a good time.
- 41:04It lacks attention and the character development of the original.
- 41:09It lacks Speedburg, essentially, but at the same time, I think it deserves a
- 41:14bigger rating and more respect.
- 41:17And maybe it has over the years, but you said it has like a 5.9 or something on IMDb.
- 41:22It's not worse. if not worse, yeah. I would give it at least a 7. I would. I would. Yeah.
- 41:29Jaws is an 8-something. This is definitely a 7, at least. You know,
- 41:32they admit to what they had.
- 41:35Up the body count, up the shark.
- 41:38And while I know we're laughing at the teenagers and stuff and all that sort
- 41:43of thing, but they're doing exactly what they're meant to do,
- 41:45and that's part of the fun. It's like a Friday the 13th film.
- 41:49Yeah, but before Friday the 13th was that kind of... before that genre was built. This is 79, so...
- 41:55They were ahead of the game. But yeah, guys, give me, if you haven't seen it,
- 41:58and seriously, a lot of people might not because the traditionalist with Jaws,
- 42:02I'm, I can't, you know, Jaws is, like I told you before, he's a masterpiece.
- 42:07Five out of five, 10 out of 10, you won't touch it. But someday,
- 42:10you know, movie studios are going to want to make some money on that, on that success.
- 42:14And Jaws too is, you know, they did what they said they set out to do and I
- 42:20wasn't offended by it. They told you, this is what we're giving you.
- 42:24Hope you at least have a smile on your face. And I did.
- 42:27So what more can you ask for? Yeah, it's decent and it's entertaining.
- 42:32And the great thing about them, they didn't try to copy and paste.
- 42:36And that's what's important.
- 42:38They didn't try to get a veteran actor to replace Robert Shaw.
- 42:42They didn't try to get a young up-and-comer to replace Richard Dreyfuss.
- 42:46They just worked with what they had. I continued the story. They didn't try to over-market.
- 42:51They didn't try to replace Quinn. They didn't try to replace Hooper.
- 42:55Yeah. They continued the story. A broody story, especially.
- 43:00Well, there you go, guys. Draws 2. Up next? I don't know. Piranha, maybe?
- 43:04Maybe piranha. Little shark. Piranha theater. Little alligator.
- 43:08Well, we could do a reptile movie and a tiny fish movie during shark month.
- 43:14We'll figure it out. We're just making this up as we go along,
- 43:17folks, as no doubt you've gathered. God, we're fucking terrible.
- 43:21You know what I do? This is what I'm going to do. We're doing a double feature. What?
- 43:25You're saying a double feature? Double feature during shark month?
- 43:28We are. because we've got a lot of films coming. So we're going to do a double
- 43:32feature from Shark Month.
- 43:34We're going to do other monster double feature, which would include Little Killer
- 43:39Fish, Piranha, and Alligator.
- 43:42Boom, a reptile one. Right. We're going to do back-to-back full double podcast.
- 43:47Boom, classics. Okay. I would like to request at some point,
- 43:51too, Night of the Lepus from the 1970s.
- 43:55You must have fucking watched that. I do. And I have watched it recently again
- 43:59It's basically giant killer rabbits What Okay, but now we're going away,
- 44:07You're moving away From water now At least a reptile movie And a little fish
- 44:13movie I don't mean you're in shark month.
- 44:17Maybe Maybe And bones from Star Trek's in it, so beat that Oh,
- 44:22wow Bones from Star Trek Damn it Jim, they're rabbits,
