- 0:38Music.
- 1:03The Lord is faithful to provide for all of our needs. Yet so often we forget
- 1:08who it is that truly provides for us.
- 1:10We get caught up in the routines of life and lose sight of the one who provides.
- 1:16When we forget that God is our provider, it becomes easy to lose trust.
- 1:20But scripture reminds us again and again that God is near, that he sees us,
- 1:27he knows our journey, and he provides.
- 1:30In Deuteronomy 2, 7, we read, For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all thy works of thy hand.
- 1:37He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness.
- 1:40These forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee. Thou hast lacked nothing.
- 1:47Join us in today's podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Erica Close takes
- 1:52us through the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 2,
- 1:55to explore how God's provision sustains us, not just in the past,
- 2:00but in every day of our lives.
- 2:02Thank you for joining us in today's podcast.
- 2:06We're continuing in the book of Deuteronomy, and today we are in Deuteronomy chapter 2.
- 2:12And I think it's important that as we look at this book that we remember that
- 2:17as Christians, we live on this side of the cross.
- 2:21But the lessons that we find in the book of Deuteronomy, like all the lessons
- 2:27that we find in the Old Testament, are still given to us, and they are still lessons for us.
- 2:35So today's key verse is Deuteronomy 2.7, which says, For the Lord thy God hath
- 2:42blessed thee in all the works of thy hand.
- 2:46He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness. These 40 years the Lord
- 2:51thy God hath been with thee, thou hast lacked nothing.
- 2:56Today we're reading in Deuteronomy chapter 2, which is verses 1 through 37.
- 3:03Then we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red
- 3:07Sea, as the Lord spake unto me, and we compassed Mount Sair many days.
- 3:13And the Lord spake unto me, saying, Ye have compassed this mountain long enough. Turn ye northward.
- 3:20And commanded thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your
- 3:25brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Sair, and they shall be afraid of you.
- 3:32Take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore.
- 3:36Meddle not with them, for I will not give you of their land.
- 3:40No, not so much as a footbreadth, because I have given Mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
- 3:46Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat. And ye shall also buy
- 3:51water of them for money, that ye may drink.
- 3:54For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand.
- 3:58He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness.
- 4:01These forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee, thou hast lacked nothing.
- 4:06And when we passed by from our brethren, the children of Esau, which dwelt in Sair.
- 4:12Through the way of the plains from Elath and from Ezangabir,
- 4:18we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
- 4:22And the Lord said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them
- 4:28in battle, for I will not give thee of their land for a possession,
- 4:32because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
- 4:36The Emims dwelt there in times past, a people great and many and tall as the
- 4:41Anakims, which were also accounted as giants as the Anakims,
- 4:46but the Moabites call them Emims.
- 4:49The Horems also dwelt in Syir before time, but the children of Esau succeeded
- 4:54them when they had destroyed them from before them and dwelt in their stead,
- 4:59as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the Lord gave unto them.
- 5:04Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.
- 5:11And in the space in which we came from Kadesh Barnea, until we were come over
- 5:16the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men
- 5:22of war were wasted out from among the hosts as the Lord sware unto them.
- 5:26For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them to destroy them from among
- 5:30the hosts until they were consumed.
- 5:32So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among.
- 5:37The people, that the Lord spake unto me, saying, Thou art to pass over through
- 5:42Ar, the coast of Moab this day.
- 5:44And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon,
- 5:49distress them not, nor meddle with them.
- 5:52For I will not give thee the land of the children of Ammon any possession,
- 5:55because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
- 5:59That was also accounted a land of giants. Giants dwelt there in an old time,
- 6:05and the Ammonites called them Zemzumans, a people great and many and tall as the Anakims.
- 6:11But the Lord destroyed them before them, and they succeeded them and dwelt in their stead.
- 6:17As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the
- 6:21Horems from before them, and they succeeded them and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day.
- 6:27And the Avims, which dwelt in Hazarim, even unto Azzah, the Kaphtarims,
- 6:32which came forth out of Kaphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.
- 6:37Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon.
- 6:42Behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land.
- 6:48Begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
- 6:51This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the
- 6:58nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee and shall
- 7:03tremble and be in anguish because of thee.
- 7:06And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kidamoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon
- 7:13with words of peace, saying, Let me pass through thy land, and I will go by the highway.
- 7:19I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. Verse,
- 7:23Thou shalt sell me meat for money that I may eat, and give me water for money that I may drink.
- 7:29Only I will pass through on my feet.
- 7:32As the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, and the Moabites,
- 7:36which dwelt in Ard, did unto me, until I shall pass over Jordan into the land
- 7:42which the Lord our God giveth us.
- 7:45But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us pass by him, For the Lord thy God
- 7:50hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him
- 7:55into thy hand as appeareth this day.
- 7:57And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before
- 8:03thee, begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
- 8:08Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
- 8:14And the Lord our God delivered him before us, and we smote him and his sons and all his people.
- 8:20And we took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed the men and the
- 8:24women and the little ones of every city.
- 8:26We left none to remain, only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves,
- 8:33and the spoil of the cities which we took.
- 8:36From Aror, which is by the brink of the river Arnon, and from the city that
- 8:41is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us.
- 8:46The Lord our God delivered all unto us, only unto the land of the children of Ammon.
- 8:52Thou camest not, nor unto the place of the river Jabbok, unto the cities and
- 8:58the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbade us.
- 9:03So chapter 2 of Deuteronomy continues to tell the story of the Israelites wandering in the desert.
- 9:11The Lord commanded the Israelites to pass through the country of Esau.
- 9:16And even though the descendants of Esau would be afraid of the Israelites,
- 9:21the Israelites weren't to meddle with them, but only to purchase meat and water with them.
- 9:27I love that verse because I think,
- 9:30how often does the Lord tell us not to meddle with something, right?
- 9:34Meddling is just getting in the weeds when we do not need to do so.
- 9:39So they were not to fight...
- 9:44With the descendants of Esau, but only to purchase meat and water.
- 9:48And the meat and the water showed one of the many ways that the Lord provided
- 9:53for the Israelites in that time they were in the wilderness.
- 9:57Once they passed through the land of Esau, the Israelites passed through the land of Moab.
- 10:02And again, the Lord tells them to not distress the Moabites or to contend with
- 10:08them in battle, because that land was promised to another people, to the children of Lot.
- 10:14The children of Lot were also to receive the land of the children of Amm,
- 10:20another people that the Israelites were to pass through again without conquering.
- 10:26They were told just pass through them.
- 10:29So the Lord is taking these Israelites on a journey and it's a long one because
- 10:36we read that 38 years have passed since the journey began.
- 10:42And in that 38 years, all the generation of men who had come out of Egypt,
- 10:48Moses calls them the men of war, had passed away.
- 10:52And that was just part of the Lord's plan. The Lord had a plan that because
- 10:57of their disobedience that we read about in Deuteronomy chapter one,
- 11:02they were not gonna enter the promised land.
- 11:06So then unlike the battle that we read about with the Amorites back in chapter
- 11:111, the Israelites in chapter 2 are called to battle with the king of Heshon.
- 11:18And the Lord revealed to Moses that they were to go up into that land to possess it and to take it.
- 11:25This wasn't a land they were passing through. This was one they were going to take.
- 11:29And the Lord gave Moses a promise. He said,
- 11:32This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the
- 11:37nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee and shall
- 11:42tremble and be in anguish because of thee.
- 11:45So Moses, receiving that promise, walks in obedience.
- 11:50Right? He sends messengers ahead to the king and says, Let me pass through thy land.
- 11:56I will go along by the highway. I will neither turn unto the right hand nor the left.
- 12:02Thou shalt sell me meat for money that I may eat and give me water for money that I may drink.
- 12:07Only will I pass through on my feet.
- 12:11The king, however, had a hardened heart, and he wasn't going to let the Israelites
- 12:16pass through like Moses had requested.
- 12:20So this time, in spite of all these circumstances, the Israelites headed into battle.
- 12:26And this time, unlike what happened in Deuteronomy chapter 1,
- 12:32the Israelites were victorious.
- 12:35So when the Israelites are in the desert, like we read in Deuteronomy chapter 2,
- 12:41in spite of all the circumstances, in spite of all the people that they have
- 12:45to pass through, in spite of all the wanderings that they have to take,
- 12:50the Lord provides for their every need.
- 12:54Deuteronomy 2.7 reminded them. Deuteronomy 2.7 says, For the Lord thy God hath
- 12:59blessed thee in all the works of thy hand. he knoweth thy walking.
- 13:04I love that. I want the Lord to know my walking.
- 13:07He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness.
- 13:11These 40 years the Lord thy God hath been with thee, thou hast lacked nothing.
- 13:17Moses reminds them, they may have been wandering in the wilderness,
- 13:22but at no time, despite all of their grumblings and all of their complaining,
- 13:28have they lacked anything.
- 13:31This is a really special verse that tells us that the Lord is going to bless the work of our hands.
- 13:36He knows the paths that we take through this life.
- 13:40And even when it seems like we're wandering in the desert, the Lord provides for us.
- 13:46We know from Romans 2.11 that God is no respecter of persons.
- 13:50And when we read of things like this, that he did for the Israelites,
- 13:55we can be confident that he's going to do the same for us.
- 14:00In chapter 2 of Deuteronomy, we see that there are so many ways that the Lord
- 14:05might choose to provide for us.
- 14:09Sometimes it might be like a miracle, like when manna showed up every day for
- 14:15the Israelites. We can read about that in Exodus chapter 16.
- 14:18Or sometimes someone else brings food, like when the ravens brought food to Elijah.
- 14:25We can read about that in 1 Kings chapter 17. team.
- 14:28Sometimes he might give us money to purchase what we need, like we read about
- 14:35in Deuteronomy chapter 2.
- 14:37But whatever method God uses to provide for us, the origin of that provision
- 14:44is always the same. It's God himself.
- 14:47All that we have comes to us from God himself.
- 14:53Just like the Lord provided for all the Israelites needed in the wilderness.
- 14:58He's going to provide for all of our needs.
- 15:01That's a New Testament promise too, found in Philippians 4.13.
- 15:06So many times it is really easy for us to forget who provides for us.
- 15:13We get so caught up in earning our salary and paying our bills that we forget
- 15:19who it is who provides us the ability to do the job that he also provided,
- 15:24that we might receive that paycheck that we get.
- 15:28When we forget that it's God who provides for everything we have,
- 15:33it's really easy to lose the ability to trust him or even the ability to want
- 15:40to trust him because we start to put our trust in ourselves.
- 15:45We need to keep our eyes, in our hearts, fixed and focused on the many ways
- 15:51that God provides for us.
- 15:53We need to have our eyes open so that we can see his provision and use that
- 16:00knowledge of his provision to build our faith and the trust that we have in him.
- 16:06We need to hold our faith. We need to hold the trust that we have in Him closely
- 16:12in our hearts and believe that all the ways that the Lord has provided for us
- 16:18this day and in days past,
- 16:21He will continue to do in the days in the future.
- 16:25Remember that you are loved. Jesus loves you.
