Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 27th of
- 0:16August and I'm delighted to have your company.
- 0:19Thank you for inviting me into your day, no matter what it
- 0:22looks like, whether it is a busy one or a relaxing one or
- 0:27somewhere in between. Great to have your company as
- 0:30this week we are going to be finishing reading together the
- 0:33book of First Corinthians. And then, well, we won't be able
- 0:37to read the 2nd letter that Paul wrote to the church in Corinth
- 0:41because that it has been lost to time.
- 0:44But we do have a copy of the 3rd letter he wrote, but we don't
- 0:47call that Third Corinthians. We call it Second Corinthians
- 0:50because it's the 2nd letter that we have that Paul wrote to the
- 0:53church in Corinth. Probably 4 all that, but we just
- 0:56have two that have become part of our biblical Canon.
- 1:00So once we've finished this week, then next week we are
- 1:02going to take another step forward, turn the page over and
- 1:06read the 2nd letter that he writes to this church.
- 1:09So we've got just a few more chapters of the 1st letter.
- 1:13And in this one today we're going to hear all about Paul
- 1:18setting some structure and some some regulations around the way
- 1:23that that church worshipped in that time and place.
- 1:26And some interpret these verses, the instructions in these verses
- 1:29as being for the whole church throughout time.
- 1:33But many believe that no, this was just to create a sense of
- 1:36order and to reduce the disruption that would have
- 1:38otherwise been caused in that time as they started to meet
- 1:42together and work out what does church look like and how do we
- 1:45do this in a way that everyone feels comfortable.
- 1:48So without saying anything further, let us sit down here.
- 1:53What our old mate Paul has to say with us is reread together
- 1:56First Corinthians chapter 14. Let love be your highest goal.
- 2:12But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit
- 2:15gives, especially the ability to prophecy.
- 2:19For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be
- 2:22speaking only to God. Since people won't be able to
- 2:25understand you, you will be speaking by the power of the
- 2:29Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
- 2:33But one who prophecies strengthens others, encourages
- 2:36them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues
- 2:40is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of
- 2:43prophecy strengthens the entire church.
- 2:47I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more, I wish
- 2:50you could all prophecy, for prophecy is greater than
- 2:54speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you were
- 2:57saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.
- 3:01Dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you speaking in
- 3:05an unknown language, how would that help you?
- 3:08But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or
- 3:12prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful.
- 3:16Even lifeless instruments like the flute or the harp must play
- 3:20the notes clearly or no one will recognise the melody.
- 3:24And if the bugler doesn't sound a clear call, how will the
- 3:28soldiers know they are being called to battle?
- 3:31It's the same for you. If you speak to people in words
- 3:35they don't understand, how will they know what you were saying?
- 3:39You might as well be talking into empty space.
- 3:43There are many different languages in the world, and
- 3:45every language has meaning. But if I don't understand a
- 3:49language, I will be a foreigner to someone who speaks it, and
- 3:53the one who speaks it will be a foreigner to me.
- 3:56And the same is true for you, since you are so eager to have
- 3:59the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will
- 4:03strengthen the whole church. So anyone who speaks in tongues
- 4:08should pray also for the ability to interpret what has been said.
- 4:12For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don't
- 4:17understand what I'm saying. Well, then, what shall I do?
- 4:22I will pray in the Spirit, and I will also pray in words I
- 4:25understand. I will sing in the Spirit, and I
- 4:29will also sing in words I understand.
- 4:32For if you praise God only in the Spirit, how can those who
- 4:36don't understand you praise God along with you?
- 4:39How can they join you in giving thanks when they don't
- 4:41understand what you were saying? You will be giving thanks very
- 4:45well, but it won't strengthen the people who hear you.
- 4:49I thank God that I speak in tongues more than any of you,
- 4:53but in a church meeting, I would rather speak five understandable
- 4:58words to help others than 10,000 words in an unknown language.
- 5:04Dear brothers and sisters, don't be childish in your
- 5:07understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it
- 5:10comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this
- 5:15kind. It is written in the Scriptures.
- 5:18I will speak to my own people through strange languages and
- 5:23through the lips of foreigners, but even then they will not
- 5:27listen to me, says the Lord. So you see that speaking in
- 5:33tongues is a sign not for believers, but for unbelievers.
- 5:38Prophecy, however, is for the benefit of believers, not
- 5:41unbelievers. Even so, if unbelievers or
- 5:45people who don't understand these things come into your
- 5:48church meeting and hear everyone speaking in an unknown language,
- 5:52they'll think you are crazy. But if all of you are
- 5:56prophesying and unbelievers or people who don't understand
- 6:00these things come into your meeting, they will be convicted
- 6:03of sin and judged by what you say.
- 6:06As they listen, their secret thoughts will be exposed and
- 6:10they will fall on their knees and worship God, declaring God
- 6:15is truly here among you. Well, my brothers and sisters,
- 6:20let's summarise. When you meet together, one will
- 6:24sing, another will teach, another will tell some special
- 6:28revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and
- 6:32another will interpret what is said.
- 6:34But everything that is done must strengthen all of you.
- 6:39No more than two or three should speak in tongues.
- 6:42They must speak one at a time, and someone must interpret what
- 6:46they say. But if no one is present who can
- 6:49interpret, they must be silent in your church meeting and speak
- 6:53in tongues to God privately. Let two or three people
- 6:58prophecy, and let the others evaluate what is said.
- 7:02But if someone is prophesying and another person receives a
- 7:05revelation from the Lord, the one who is speaking must stop.
- 7:09In this way, all who prophecy will have a turn to speak one
- 7:14after the other, so that everyone will learn and be
- 7:17encouraged. Remember that people who
- 7:20prophecy are in control of the Spirit and can take turns, for
- 7:25God is not a God of disorder, but of peace.
- 7:30As in all the meetings of God's holy people, women should be
- 7:35silent during the church meetings.
- 7:37It is not proper for them to speak.
- 7:39They should be submissive, just as the law says.
- 7:43If they have any questions, they should ask their husbands at
- 7:46home, for it is improper for women to speak in church
- 7:49meetings. Or do you think God's Word
- 7:53originated with you? Corinthians.
- 7:55Are you the only ones to whom it was given?
- 7:58If you claim to be a prophet or think you are spiritual, you
- 8:02should recognise that what I am saying is a command from the
- 8:05Lord Himself. But if you do not recognise
- 8:08this, you yourself will not be recognised.
- 8:12So my dear brothers and sisters, be eager to prophecy and don't
- 8:17forbid speaking in tongues, but be sure that everything is done
- 8:22properly and in order. Our Jesus, we hear so clearly
- 8:36that you want your people to work together in a way that
- 8:42edifies the group and encourages each other.
- 8:46Thank you, Lord, that you have placed us in community so that
- 8:49we can be encouraged and that we can know more about you and
- 8:55Lord, as we discern these words. Lord, I pray that You would show
- 8:59us what that looks like in our context, what orderly,
- 9:04respectful, and holy worship looks like when we gather to
- 9:09lift up your name and bring Your Kingdom closer.
- 9:14I thank You that You don't come to us with a rule of law, but
- 9:21with an open heart of grace, and that when we get it wrong, You
- 9:26continue to invite us in and to forgive us with that incredible
- 9:30love of yours. I pray that you would inspire us
- 9:35to be the same, to approach each other with hearts filled with
- 9:39love and grace. I thank you for this most
- 9:44perfect way that you have shown us.
- 9:48Transform us from the inside out to be more like you.
- 9:51Jesus, I pray all of this in your precious, peaceful name,
- 9:57Amen.
