- 0:48Here is bonus material. No, he's a good, he's a good
- 0:55ender to this. Hey, Mommy, am I all right?
- 1:00So. I think he might be learning
- 1:02this right now. First of all, introduce yourself
- 1:04Coach Ray. Williams, Washington University
- 1:07St. Louis, MO.
- 1:09The bears. The bears.
- 1:11OK, so something I was doing tonight that I've never done
- 1:15before. Besides going live on YouTube,
- 1:17we are also live on Twitter and when you called, you now say I
- 1:23didn't believe it. Edit Broadcaster Yeah, it just
- 1:26died, everybody. So listen everybody on Twitter,
- 1:29come over to YouTube. We don't even.
- 1:32Just too late for that. It's too.
- 1:34Late who does? This Ray, you and I have been
- 1:38friends for a long time. When you were five years old,
- 1:43when I was 30. We love you.
- 1:44Love. That love that.
- 1:46You, you've done an amazing job at a lot of great institutions.
- 1:51Listen, you know I think of you as someone who has a a fountain
- 1:56of knowledge. You've thought of my opinion.
- 1:59I hope this doesn't offend you. I love you enough that you know,
- 2:01this is an offensive. I think you are seen more as the
- 2:05the hype coach and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 2:07Nothing wrong with that. You know, just like you came in,
- 2:09you know, you know. Every time we.
- 2:11Submit chat. And I love you for that, but I
- 2:14think you don't get your due, if you will, of what's up here and
- 2:19how you coach. And I don't just mean the X's
- 2:20and O's, I mean how you relate to your kids, the programs, the
- 2:25programs that you build, how you recruit and build those programs
- 2:27athletically as well as academically.
- 2:30So I want to kind of take the opportunity since I have you
- 2:33here, you know, we, we have a a really broad audience, everybody
- 2:37from guys and gals that are in the Hall of Fame tonight down to
- 2:41people who have never coached but want to coach, you know,
- 2:44athletes. What advice would you give
- 2:47someone wants to become a track coach, whether it's college or
- 2:50high school? I don't I don't know that that's
- 2:51relevant. Maybe it is.
- 2:53You can answer with part of your answer.
- 2:55It could be that. What advice would you give to
- 2:58help someone have a long trivia coaching specifically?
- 3:03Track and. Field.
- 3:04Yeah, So it's a passion, right? So I come from a family of
- 3:08educators and so it's kind of instinctive.
- 3:11So when you when you look at what's the end result, the end
- 3:15result is to build that young person to be the best, whatever
- 3:19they're going to be. We have a sport that doesn't
- 3:21have an end to it. And so because our sport doesn't
- 3:25have an end, how do we take our sport and apply it to what
- 3:30they're going to do? And so, as I mentioned in
- 3:33Washington University. Keep, keep talking.
- 3:35Hey, Dave. Yeah, totally different, totally
- 3:38different situation where I'm. So sorry, I forgot Washington
- 3:42University. There are.
- 3:43Players Division Three, they're not on scholarship, and so they
- 3:47do it for the love of it and that whole paradigm of the love
- 3:51for it. But what can you bring to the
- 3:54table when they go into the workforces?
- 3:57Accountants or lawyers or doctors, architects, I mean,
- 4:02conversations I have with my students now just it's mind
- 4:05blowing. Because.
- 4:06The the altitude of of our young people, but it's, it's been that
- 4:11way, you know, for now 28 years, including to athletics.
- 4:15So it's been pretty good roller coaster.
- 4:17It's funny, you kind of took the words out of my mouth.
- 4:21I, I'm, I'm gonna say I'm famous for saying this.
- 4:24I'm not famous for anything, but I say this a lot.
- 4:26You know, the love that I have for for the people who choose to
- 4:30be track coaches is because 99.999% are never going to go
- 4:35pro and have the point O one that do 99% are going to make
- 4:39money. Unfortunately.
- 4:40I wish that would change, but every kid that you coach, every
- 4:44kid that these guys and gals out here coach, are going to go on
- 4:47to become moms, dads, business owners, to your point,
- 4:50architects, clergy, charity owners, etcetera.
- 4:54And that is the real, in my opinion, positive impact that
- 4:57track coaches make on society because you're raising hopefully
- 5:01good people by being an example, correcting when necessary,
- 5:05patting them back when necessary, that they go become
- 5:08good humans. What you know, you talked about
- 5:12passion and what we do for the kids.
- 5:14As we're giving this advice to young people, most in my
- 5:18experience, want to coach track because they want to, I would
- 5:22say, put their Sam's, their toes in the sample.
- 5:24They like to be outside. That's the fun part.
- 5:27Talk. To us about, you know, of all
- 5:29the coaching duties you have the very formal ones.
- 5:32Maybe there's paperwork and stuff that you have to do, the
- 5:34informal ones. A kid comes in and wants to talk
- 5:35about dropping a class or maybe being homesick.
- 5:39Out of all of your coaching duties, how much time are you
- 5:42actually on the track? The the part that we all
- 5:46protocol get into touching. For, you know, the two hours
- 5:48that that. We long.
- 5:50For all day. The.
- 5:52But but you said it will and that and that's when you can see
- 5:55the longevity in the sport because the the coach, you just
- 5:59want to play and keep your feet in the sands.
- 6:02They don't last longer. Because they.
- 6:04They miss the big picture. The big picture is to to raise
- 6:07up the next generation of of of young men and women to do some
- 6:11amazing things. But but yeah, to answer your
- 6:14question, that that two to three hours, you know, maybe the prep
- 6:17time or again, I'm in a situation where players have
- 6:21class during the actual practice time.
- 6:24So the three sessions in the morning, the two after practice,
- 6:27you know, to try to get them what they need to be successful.
- 6:31But yeah, that that little block of time is that's not really
- 6:35what it's all about. And the big picture, as as any
- 6:40educator would tell you, it's it's all about the
- 6:43organizational structure, making sure there's a a plan and what's
- 6:47the end goal. And a lot of people are are so
- 6:49tied up into the science or art of it.
- 6:52Yeah, put it both together. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:54To to make make that end result do what you.
- 6:57Do I've used this example before and I actually for some reason I
- 7:00always use the same person. It's actually a a former boss of
- 7:03yours, JB. OK, because you just said it's
- 7:07not always about the XS and OS. And I think that's very true.
- 7:11I think it's very important for coaching education and
- 7:13understanding how to coach long jumpers better and just in terms
- 7:15of better. Absolutely.
- 7:17But I think how you work with these young people can overcome
- 7:22a lot of maybe some not so great habits on the scientific XS and
- 7:27OS side, right. So I always use JBI.
- 7:29Don't know why I use that much to do.
- 7:31I would say, you know, Jimmy, Jerry Baltus of Grand Valley
- 7:33State, you know, his leadership skills are so good.
- 7:36I truly believe that we could pluck him out of track and put
- 7:39him as a hockey coach. And I don't know, maybe he
- 7:42actually loves hockey and knows everything about, I don't know,
- 7:43I just assume it doesn't. But even he would not know that
- 7:46exes and knows of hockey. I think because of his
- 7:48leadership skills and style that the leadership side of they
- 7:52would be very successful. I think really good leadership
- 7:55coaches could do almost any sport, any classroom, etcetera,
- 7:59and have success because of the leadership.
- 8:01Always. And that's that's the key.
- 8:02You just. Said it.
- 8:03You just said it, that that part of coaching is the secret sauce.
- 8:09That's the secret sauce. My coach had it at North Central
- 8:12College. Kyle Kerry and it it's, but
- 8:15it's, it's about building those relationships, you know, that,
- 8:18that extra 5 minutes to to just to tell a player, hey, you know,
- 8:21these little things you need to correct things, have them on the
- 8:24backseat tomorrow. That little bit is all it takes.
- 8:27Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:29You know, you have a huge responsibility, you know, not
- 8:33young people today. Young people are going through a
- 8:36lot of pressure, stresses, etcetera.
- 8:40They need to have a good experience with you and they do
- 8:42have that 2 hour block with you and even know that that's kind
- 8:45of the the best time of their life that you know.
- 8:47And you said it right, we call it recess.
- 8:49Yeah, yeah. They ring the bell.
- 8:51I say this every year. The door opens, 30 players run
- 8:55all over, young people run all over.
- 8:57I've never seen a hamstring pull.
- 8:59Yeah. Right, maybe a couple of bloody
- 9:01nose. Right?
- 9:033 little girls here in the corner having their
- 9:04conversation. The two little boys over there
- 9:07thinking boogers. But.
- 9:09But but that that is, I think everybody needs that.
- 9:13Yeah, yeah. And that that that joy.
- 9:17Yeah, no question. You know, as they get on an age,
- 9:19they're going to forget or at least embellish their PRS.
- 9:22You know, I'm now A-150, half Miller.
- 9:27Next year I'm sure I'll run 144. Oh my God.
- 9:29But they were. Exactly.
- 9:31Yeah, but they remember the bus rides, they remember the coach
- 9:35that saw something in them before they could see it
- 9:37themselves. They remember the stressors and
- 9:39pressures of win a conference title when there's a team or
- 9:43individual relay. That's what they truly remember.
- 9:45I love that recess analogy, man. That's it.
- 9:47I give it to them every year. Especially when you got so much
- 9:50stress on the academic side. Sure.
- 9:52When? You come over.
- 9:53Here, lean that stuff there. That's awesome.
- 9:55Open up, have a good time, great experience.
- 9:57Let's have a little bit of academic here.
- 10:00I've got 100 questions. Absolutely not.
- 10:02One through 100. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:03You get to pick the number. I get to ask the question.
- 10:05My number is 22. Why 22 It's.
- 10:08A great question. So 22 was my number in high
- 10:12school. My soccer freshman year I got
- 10:15#22. My senior year we only had 18
- 10:18jerseys so I took #2. I think this is a good one for
- 10:22you. Get out of my kitchen.
- 10:24What's your least favorite food or ingredients?
- 10:27It's messed up so although I wear it well.
- 10:32Better than I. Yeah, well, here's the thing.
- 10:35I've been very fortunate. I I don't really have a bad
- 10:39thing, right. You know, remember when you were
- 10:43little, you didn't like salad? Like salad, You know, when I
- 10:47couldn't understand why the, the squid tastes so funny and so
- 10:51mushy? I like squid now.
- 10:53So. Yeah.
- 10:54So you know, when you evolved with years, your your time
- 10:59changes. So in the kitchen, I don't know
- 11:02man, I would say they like hot foods.
- 11:06I love. It Yeah, I love it now.
- 11:10That's a That's a great. Question, You're constantly
- 11:12evolving, right? You I'm not someone in general.
- 11:16You are constantly evolving, getting better every year.
- 11:22Yeah, that's not no, no fan there, that's for sure.
- 11:25That's for sure. Great.
- 11:26Thank you for being on the show, man.
- 11:27I do. Appreciate you and thank you for
- 11:30the product that you always give me.
- 11:32Thank you. And I need a.
- 11:34Wait, that's over an orbiter land now?
- 11:35Exactly. Hey, for everybody who sits down
- 11:37with us tonight, we're giving them.
- 11:38This is exclusive. We're not giving this out to
- 11:40just in general. Only for them to sit down.
