- 0:29Speaker 1: the Varsitynetwork dot Com. And we're with Jim Moore as
- 0:32Speaker 1: we are every Tuesday, to talk about what happened on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the weekend and what's coming up with FAU. We get
- 0:37Speaker 1: a lot to talk about there. But first, Coach, you
- 0:40Speaker 1: said something in the press conference on Tuesday morning which
- 0:43Speaker 1: I thought was pretty interesting, something about losing small. All right,
- 0:47Speaker 1: you lost the close game over the weekend. You had
- 0:48Speaker 1: a chance, you were leading in the fourth quarter, but
- 0:51Speaker 1: sometimes you have to go through that to win big.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Can you give me more on that, because I'm trying
- 0:57Speaker 1: to understand that from the perspective of the broadcaster and
- 1:01Speaker 1: the player.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Well, if losing small becomes acceptable, you're never gonna win big.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And sometimes a program like this it's struggled. They accept
- 1:10Speaker 2: a small loss as a moral victory. Well, it's a loss.
- 1:15Speaker 2: There's no moral victories in sports. You either win or
- 1:19Speaker 2: you lose. That's period, and that's just the way. That's
- 1:21Speaker 2: just fact. So if you start accepting small losses, you're
- 1:28Speaker 2: doom for failure, you know. But at the same time,
- 1:32Speaker 2: it's you know, you do have to acknowledge progress. You
- 1:37Speaker 2: do have to acknowledge progress, but you cannot making progress
- 1:42Speaker 2: is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to
- 1:45Speaker 2: have success, which in sports is winning. And so I
- 1:50Speaker 2: don't want our players to feel like a small loss
- 1:55Speaker 2: is in any way considered a victory of any kind.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's not. It's not. And so being able to break
- 2:02Speaker 2: through that is really important to us. I'd rather, you know,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I don't want to lose small. I want to win big,
- 2:08Speaker 2: you know, And that's what I want them to think too.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But at the same time, yeah, we're getting we're getting better.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But the ultimate objective is to win football games.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Well, the Huskies did a lot of good things on
- 2:20Speaker 1: the weekend. Let's talk. Let's go on the defensive side
- 2:23Speaker 1: for a few minutes. Here. Jaden McDonald's a guy that
- 2:25Speaker 1: came from Troy this year and he's your leading tackler
- 2:29Speaker 1: right now. He's been involved in a lot of what's
- 2:31Speaker 1: going on out there. And two for me and A
- 2:33Speaker 1: Brown is going to be on the show with us
- 2:35Speaker 1: a little bit later on. Those two guys had good days,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I felt, and I'm just curious how you view a defense.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And you know, in baseball, they say you got to
- 2:44Speaker 1: be good up the middle, right, you got to have
- 2:46Speaker 1: a good shortstop, good second basement, good center fielder. Is
- 2:49Speaker 1: that similar to what you see in football?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it is, but you better be damn good on
- 2:54Speaker 2: the edges too. I mean, you know, if you were
- 2:58Speaker 2: to build the perfect defense, you'd start at corner and
- 3:01Speaker 2: pass rush. You know, those are the premium positions. But
- 3:05Speaker 2: if you're not salty as hell up the middle with
- 3:08Speaker 2: guys like Jilani and Dal and Jaden and Tooey and
- 3:12Speaker 2: Durante and guys you know, Malchi McClain, then you're not
- 3:15Speaker 2: going to be very good either. So yeah, I would
- 3:17Speaker 2: subscribe to that, but I also it's a probably very
- 3:21Speaker 2: simplistic approach. But those two guys, you know, Twoey now,
- 3:26Speaker 2: for you know, a year and three games, has just
- 3:29Speaker 2: made progress every week, and it's really fun to watch
- 3:32Speaker 2: him do that. Become a really dependable, good football player
- 3:37Speaker 2: who's a playmaker that understands the scheme, that understands the game,
- 3:41Speaker 2: that cares about being a good player. And then to
- 3:43Speaker 2: bring in someone like Jaden who you know, as you said,
- 3:47Speaker 2: he came from Troy, they really good defensive football team
- 3:50Speaker 2: he was in, really been really well coached. Comes here well,
- 3:54Speaker 2: he made a quick pit stop in Indiana spring ball,
- 3:59Speaker 2: then he came here. He loves football and he just
- 4:03Speaker 2: plays with a passion and tons of emotion and he's
- 4:06Speaker 2: violent and he's physical and he's playing well right now.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And so when you have a couple of tough dudes
- 4:13Speaker 2: in the middle like that that you can depend on,
- 4:15Speaker 2: then it's certainly certainly helpful. Now we ask our linebackers
- 4:19Speaker 2: do a lot of things. You know, they're not always
- 4:20Speaker 2: in the middle. You see them out in space and
- 4:23Speaker 2: you see him rushing. Jayden had the sack the other day.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But those are two veteran football players that have played
- 4:28Speaker 2: a lot of snaps and you have to put a
- 4:30Speaker 2: premium on that experience.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you held Duke to one hundred and forty two
- 4:35Speaker 1: on the ground in forty tries or thirty nine tries.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So when you look at defensive efforts and you're going
- 4:41Speaker 1: to face a very balanced team here this weekend on
- 4:44Speaker 1: Saturday night, Florida Atlantic throws it well, they run it well.
- 4:48Speaker 1: They got this Kidzamori Mobley. I watched their game with FIU. Man,
- 4:52Speaker 1: that guy is dangerous. So as a running back, so
- 4:57Speaker 1: as you view this game coming up, do you start
- 5:00Speaker 1: by saying we got to stop the run? Or is that?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Is that just a cliche that I'm throwing at you.
- 5:04Speaker 2: No, it's not a cliche. It's the genesis of playing
- 5:07Speaker 2: good defensive football is you have to be able to
- 5:09Speaker 2: stop the run and try to make a team one dimensional.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And now you're exactly right, and I don't think it.
- 5:15Speaker 2: You know, even if you're playing a run and shoot
- 5:16Speaker 2: team in the old days, you know you have to
- 5:19Speaker 2: stop the run. You can't let him have it both ways.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So you know, you talk about Zuare and C. J.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Campbell and then you know they're their quarterback runs the ball.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I mean he's there leading rusher right now. Is their
- 5:33Speaker 2: quarterback at least if you don't count sacks. So they
- 5:37Speaker 2: have the capability of running the football. And anytime you've
- 5:39Speaker 2: got a quarterback in the run, you know, puts tremendous
- 5:41Speaker 2: stress on the defense and on the defensive signal callers.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So we have to stop the run, right you know.
- 5:47Speaker 2: We have to come out and we have to stop
- 5:48Speaker 2: the run, and we have to put pressure on the
- 5:50Speaker 2: quarterback and when he tries to scramble, we got to
- 5:52Speaker 2: get him to the ground and we got to make
- 5:54Speaker 2: plays in the past game as well. But if you
- 5:56Speaker 2: can stop the run, then you got you got a chance.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Cam Fancher a guy that we're familiar with. We
- 6:01Speaker 1: saw him at the Myrtle Beach Ball when he played
- 6:03Speaker 1: for Marshall. He's got forty three runs and one hundred
- 6:06Speaker 1: and eighty two yards scored a touchdown this year for
- 6:09Speaker 1: Florida Atlantic, who was one and two coming into the game.
- 6:12Speaker 1: We'll be talking about your quarterback when we return. Nick
- 6:15Speaker 1: Evers did some running of the football very well in
- 6:18Speaker 1: the game at Duke, so that's coming up as we
- 6:20Speaker 1: continue with Jim or the Yukon Football Coaches Show on
- 6:22Speaker 1: lear Field
