- 0:00President Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed Texas Attorney
- 0:03General Ken Paxton in his primary challenge to Senator
- 0:07John Cornyn, dealing a massive blow to the incumbent with major
- 0:11implications in the fight for the Senate Majority.
- 0:14Cornyn has spent over a year courting Trump's sport, while
- 0:18Paxton has run to Cornyn's right and pitched himself as a
- 0:21stronger ally of the president. Cornyn and the Senate GOP
- 0:24leaders argued that he is a stronger general election
- 0:27candidate as Democrats look to win statewide office in Texas
- 0:31for the first time since 1994. The runoff is a week away and
- 0:36early voting began on Monday. Quote I know Ken well, have seen
- 0:41him tested at the highest and most difficult levels and he is
- 0:45a winner. All caps All caps Very
- 0:48important. John Cornyn is a good man and I
- 0:51worked well with him, but he was not supportive of me when times
- 0:54were tough, he added, appearing to reference how Cornyn
- 0:57hesitated to support Trump in his 2024 campaign.
- 1:01Cornyn said in the spring of 2023 that he thought Trump's
- 1:04time had passed him by, though the Texas senator eventually
- 1:07endorsed the president after he won the New Hampshire primary.
- 1:10Cornyn reacted to Trump tapping Paxton by noting that the
- 1:14president has consistently called me a friend in this race.
- 1:17It is now time for Texas Republican voters to decide if
- 1:21they want a strong nominee to help our GOP candidates down the
- 1:24ballot and defeat James Talarico in November or a weak nominee
- 1:29who jeopardizes everything that we care about, Cornyn said on XI
- 1:33Trust Republican Voters of Texas.
- 1:36Trump's intervention in a runoff comes at a high profile moment
- 1:39for his dominance within the GOP.
- 1:41Earlier this month, he helped unseat a group of Indiana State
- 1:44lawmakers who resisted his push for mid decade, mid decade
- 1:48redistricting. On Saturday, Louisiana Senator
- 1:51Bill Cassidy lost his primary five years after he voted to
- 1:55convict Trump in his second impeachment.
- 1:58And on Tuesday, Trump is working to defeat one of his biggest GOP
- 2:02critics in Congress, Representative Thomas Massie of
- 2:05Kentucky, in that primary. This story was written before
- 2:08the race was done, and Massie lost, by the way, in case you
- 2:11didn't know. So I'll actually cover that
- 2:13separately as its own story. But, you know, we're talking
- 2:15about Paxton here. Vice President JD Vance,
- 2:18appearing at a White House press briefing on Tuesday afternoon,
- 2:21said that Trump's endorsement of Paxton sends a message to
- 2:24elected officials who fall out of step with voters or out of
- 2:27step with the president. That is a good, not a good place
- 2:30to be politically. Vance said Democrats have been
- 2:34eyeing the Texas Senate seat in their uphill battle to capture
- 2:37the chamber majority and the state.
- 2:40And the state becomes particularly enticing if the
- 2:42scandal plagued Paxton does in fact, defeat Cornyn.
- 2:46The state's Democrats resolved their primary on March 3rd,
- 2:50picking Teller Rico, who is currently a state
- 2:52representative. Teller Rico quickly responded to
- 2:55Trump's endorsement to the run off quote.
- 2:57As I said on primary night, it doesn't matter who wins the the
- 3:00the run off. Excuse me, we already know who
- 3:04we're running against, the billionaire mega donors and
- 3:07their corrupt political system. National Democratic groups also
- 3:11use the news to tout the strength of Telarico's campaign.
- 3:15A spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign
- 3:17Committee said in a statement that while Republicans were
- 3:20divided in the race, Telarico is building a campaign to win and
- 3:24Texans will send him to the US Senate in November.
- 3:27Telarico, by the way, just really quickly, not quite as
- 3:32weird, not quite as bizarre, not quite as odd as Graham Plattner.
- 3:38But you know, it's kind of close.
- 3:39It's kind of close when you start looking at the Teller
- 3:41Rico's background. That guy is a very odd duck, a
- 3:44very odd duck. And you would not really think
- 3:48in Texas that he would have much of a chance at all.
- 3:52But because of the environment, you know, I was looking at the
- 3:54numbers yesterday for a presentation I was giving, and
- 3:58the numbers I was looking at were the special elections that
- 4:02have taken place this year. So somebody's retiring,
- 4:06somebody's dead, whatever. And you have to do a special
- 4:08election in Congress. Interestingly enough, none of
- 4:12the special elections have caused the party in control of
- 4:16the seat to change hands. There has not been a flip in any
- 4:20of these special elections yet. However, there has been a
- 4:23significant move in the special elections, and the move has been
- 4:28on average between 15 and 20 points to the left.
- 4:33So a district that had a Republican win with like, say,
- 4:3635% of the vote, they would win by like 15 or 20%.
- 4:42So they still win, but the margin is down.
- 4:44And it was consistently across everywhere.
- 4:48Now, I've cautioned people to not only, you know, like learn
- 4:51that lesson or whatnot, but also not over learn the lesson
- 4:54because you can't draw too much information from that.
- 4:58This is a very, I mean, you're talking about 20% turn out
- 5:00right, like low turn out elections, highly motivated
- 5:03Democrats, not so motivated Republicans.
- 5:06It's just the way that it is. Does that mean that the fall
- 5:09election is going to go a certain way?
- 5:11Is that mean it's going to be a blue wave, anything like that?
- 5:14No, it does not. It does not.
- 5:16It could indicate it, but we don't really know until people
- 5:19start showing up in more substantial numbers and when
- 5:22then seeing what those what those numbers look like.
- 5:25So you don't really know, but it does give you at least some
- 5:28inkling that this is not going to be a good Republican year.
- 5:32This is going to be a a bad Republican year overall
- 5:36nationwide with pockets of good and bad in in states depending
- 5:40on local circumstances. Just the way that it works.
- 5:43And I think Maine, I have lots to say about how Maine maybe one
- 5:45of those local special circumstances.
- 5:47But when you're talking about Texas, Texas is red.
- 5:50It's very red. It's been very red for a very
- 5:53long time. But The funny thing about it
- 5:55being red is that it hasn't so red that it's impossible to see
- 5:58this. I mean, you have seen Republican
- 6:00governors of Massachusetts, you know, you've seen over the years
- 6:05many places. There's, there's Democratic
- 6:07governors of Kentucky, you know, there it, it's just, it happens.
- 6:12It happens. So it can happen anywhere.
- 6:14Anybody can be elected statewide anywhere.
- 6:15I've always believed that I there could be a governor of
- 6:19California or a senator from California who happens to be a
- 6:22Republican, have to be the right Republican in the right year,
- 6:24but it can easily happen. So the idea that a Democrat
- 6:27could win Texas is not bizarre. And with the national winds
- 6:31blowing the way that they are and the fact that Texas is a red
- 6:34state, but it's not like a it's not like Utah.
- 6:38Yeah. I mean, like, there's barely any
- 6:39Democrats that live in Utah. It's just there just isn't
- 6:42Texas. There is.
- 6:44There is. They're just definitely the
- 6:45minority. They're just definitely the
- 6:47smaller group. But they're big enough that
- 6:50they're close enough that in certain circumstances, it could
- 6:53work. Now, does Teller, Rico really
- 6:57have a chance to win against either Cornyn or Paxton?
- 7:00I think he could, but I think he would be the underdog for sure.
- 7:03Paxton, though it is undeniable, is the easier person for them to
- 7:07run against. He just is.
- 7:09He may be more of an ally of the president, but he definitely
- 7:12will be more of a lightning rod, more divisive, and easier for
- 7:17Teller Rico to lampoon as an extremist.
- 7:20You know, it doesn't make him one, but it means that you can
- 7:23lampoon him as such. And you know, Paxton will do
- 7:26that. Back to Teller, Rico, and then
- 7:27maybe we're in a really weird duel in that state.
- 7:30I don't know. We'll see.
- 7:31But this certainly gives indications that Cornyn's time,
- 7:35much like several others that have been on the wrong side of
- 7:39the president, is potentially over.
- 7:41Let's go to John from Falmouth. John, how are you?
- 7:44Hi, Matt. What's up with the ABC News
- 7:47feed? What's up with it?
- 7:50We have one. What do we?
- 7:52What do you be more specific when you ask?
- 7:54Are you done with CBS? It's not that we're ending.
- 7:57CBS is at CBS is. Ending everyone.
- 8:01Yeah, Yeah, actually. Their overnight news actually
- 8:03did a tribute to the CBS Radio network, and the history of it
- 8:07goes way back. I mean, it's very storied.
- 8:10And so this is kind of a major, it's an issue, It's a, it's a,
- 8:12it's a major event that CBS Radio.
- 8:15Yes, we've changed. Everything's changed, but it's
- 8:18kind of a so the. Point being though, John, is
- 8:23that we had no choice, so we had to find a new partner.
- 8:25And ABC, congratulations, you have won.
- 8:28Phones, Phones. Phones. 879-9426.
- 8:31Al from Saco. No.
- 8:32Excuse me. Al from Portland.
- 8:34I cannot. Old habits die hard.
- 8:36Al from Portland. How are you?
- 8:38Oh, I'm fine, Matt. Thank you very much for taking
- 8:41my call. What a weird time we're in.
- 8:45My God almighty, seems like back in the 60s when I was tripping
- 8:50on LSD, My goodness. And this, this fraud, I mean,
- 8:56this is unbelievable. All these Minnesota phone
- 8:59numbers and I watched that guy from the main wire going to that
- 9:05fifth wheel trailer and in Quentin, supposedly a health
- 9:10place. My goodness.
- 9:13And and and and and this thing with Platner is more disturbing
- 9:19as time goes on. Oh my God, please people vote
- 9:24Republican. I'm no big fan of Susan Collins.
- 9:28I didn't like her vote for the trunk and entitled frat boy
- 9:33there Kavanaugh, but my God, she's our only alternative.
- 9:39God help us if we get the. Left.
- 9:42Good Lord, help us. And for me to think the guy is
- 9:45really disturbed. That in itself isn't true.
- 9:51You have a good. Day, thanks.
- 9:53Peace Pop. Microdot, always a pleasure.
- 9:56Al appreciate it. And it's funny, I see, I look
- 9:59and I see Al from Portland and my head just says Al from Saco.
- 10:02Good call as always. Al appreciate it. 879-9426 Rob
- 10:07in Portland is next. Rob, how are you?
- 10:10Great. How you doing, Matt?
- 10:12Not too bad. Yeah, I haven't called in a
- 10:15while, but you always have a great show and I'm always
- 10:17listening and it's an honor to follow Al.
- 10:21Indeed it is that I knew I had something to say, but I just so
- 10:27much to say. I don't know where to start.
- 10:29But on the, on the Platner thing, I mean, it's like Trump,
- 10:34obviously, I mean, you can, you can see the game he plays.
- 10:38And it's like with the Paxton thing, it's, it's, you know, he
- 10:42just wants blind loyalty and he's, he's going to pull those
- 10:46strings to make that happen. And he's going to punish the
- 10:48people who didn't show him blind loyalty.
- 10:51And it seems to me like, I don't know, I don't know what Paxton
- 10:55Paxton's experience is, but Cornyn's got a lot of a lot of
- 10:59miles in down there in Washington, DC like Susan
- 11:02Collins does here. We'd be foolish to give up Susan
- 11:05Collins. But on the Platiner thing, it's,
- 11:10it's interesting, you know, when, when, you know, when
- 11:15things happened and they had to March in Washington with their
- 11:19pink hats on, you know, all the things that that were
- 11:24unforgivable about Trump. I was, I was with friends and
- 11:29family up in in New Hampshire and I was, we were all, you
- 11:34know, doing a waterfall tour and having a great day.
- 11:36But it got into politics, which made me go completely silent.
- 11:40I just listen at that point. But some very liberal people and
- 11:45you know, so and some women who were very liberal and they are
- 11:49absolutely contorting all of their ideology to forgive
- 11:55Plattner for things that were not forgivable in the behavior
- 12:00of Donald Trump. And it's just interesting to,
- 12:03you know, see that. So, you know, I mean, I admit
- 12:06I've become very polarized. So, but so have they.
- 12:10And you know, it's like I've said for for a long while with
- 12:15trumpets or or with any leader, I'm not hiring a Boy Scout.
- 12:20I'm hiring somebody to do the business that I want done for
- 12:24this country. And it's it really is.
- 12:28Yeah. Like that?
- 12:29It is indeed. But you know that that I would
- 12:32caution people over time to be careful about the
- 12:35rationalizations of, you know, not wanting to really care that
- 12:39much about a good person in office because I want them to do
- 12:43with the job. Because that that is an OK
- 12:45philosophy in general. But if you start accepting it,
- 12:49right, I mean, there's that old joke that you can't be a little
- 12:50bit pregnant. It's binary.
- 12:52It's like you're either in or you're out, right?
- 12:54It's kind of the same with like moral depravity.
- 12:57Like, I mean, if you don't care, then you don't care.
- 12:59And then sometimes, often times, maybe increasingly, you get
- 13:02treated with a whole bunch of really horrific people that end
- 13:05up being the people that you're hiring for these jobs because
- 13:08you don't really have any standards anymore.
- 13:11And I think that's that's what's going on in the Platner thing,
- 13:13like on the left. You know, I don't know whether
- 13:15it's that they're just hypocritical or they say, well,
- 13:18the Republicans don't care, so neither do we.
- 13:20Either way, they're saying none of this stuff matters to us.
- 13:25It is irrelevant to us. I don't care.
- 13:27I don't like Susan Collins. I don't like Trump.
- 13:30A chimpanzee who is on our side in our tribe would be fine.
- 13:35I don't care. Forget it.
- 13:37And so that's what they do is they rationalize.
- 13:38They say it's OK that he's clearly imbalanced, he's clearly
- 13:42a rageaholic, he's clearly insane, he's clearly depraved.
- 13:46But I don't care because the only outcome I care about is
- 13:49sticking my finger in that guy's eye.
- 13:52And that's a sad place to be. I don't like being there.
- 13:55I don't like being there. Rob, let me let me stop you
- 13:58there, though, because I do want to make sure I get Ray and
- 14:00Lewiston before I get out of here.
- 14:01He's only got about a minute. So, Ray, what do you got for us?
- 14:042 real quick things. One thing Platinum is not sorry
- 14:07unless he gets caught. And then the other thing is
- 14:10about we talked about before about his disability.
- 14:13I wanted to know if his disability is full or not
- 14:17because it seems like his wife is getting all the the money
- 14:20from his oyster farm and his campaign it's getting funneled
- 14:23through her. He is.
- 14:25He is full disabled 100%. So.
- 14:28So technically he can't have a job then?
- 14:31Well, I don't know. I am not an expert on how that
- 14:34works. To be perfectly frank with you.
- 14:36Clearly he has an oyster farm. So, I mean, you know, and now
- 14:40he's as public as public can be. So if he's not allowed to do
- 14:43that, then I don't know, complaints being filed as we
- 14:46speak probably I would imagine, but my guess is that he is
- 14:49allowed to do that kind of thing.
- 14:50It's just a really big hole in the in the system if if so.
- 14:54Ray, thanks for the call. Appreciate it.
