- 0:09Speaker 1: There we go. That's better. All right. Two things. One,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I've got this head congestion thing going on, so my
- 0:17Speaker 1: ears kind of plug up. So if I'm screaming at you,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I ain't mad. Here's the second thing. So let's talk
- 0:26Speaker 1: about home education, why and how. I have a home
- 0:30Speaker 1: education why message. And I have a home education how message.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm going to give you both of them. Here's the
- 0:40Speaker 1: third thing. I said there was two. Here's the third thing. Well,
- 0:44Speaker 1: so now that means it has to be four. The
- 0:47Speaker 1: third thing is really don't trust everything I say. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: fourth thing is that I just forgot it. Here's some
- 1:01Speaker 1: useful websites. BodhiBakam.org. You can go there and find out stuff. gracefamilybaptist.net.
- 1:09Speaker 1: That's our church website. Sermonaudio.com slash Votibachum. You can go
- 1:13Speaker 1: there and get sermons for a homeschool price, which is free.
- 1:21Speaker 1: If this is your first year homeschooling, you'll understand that
- 1:24Speaker 1: more and more and more. Well, homeschoolers are good at
- 1:28Speaker 1: a lot of things, but nobody can find free stuff
- 1:31Speaker 1: like we can. Amen? Amen? If there's a way to
- 1:35Speaker 1: do it for free, a homeschooler knows how. All right?
- 1:39Speaker 1: For those of you who, Facebook, facebook.com slash Foddy Bauckham.
- 1:43Speaker 1: If you tweet, twitter.com slash Foddy Bauckham. All those things
- 1:48Speaker 1: right there, just all that stuff. Please don't send me
- 1:51Speaker 1: 20-page letters through any of these venues. All right. Home education,
- 1:56Speaker 1: why and how. A couple of trends. Number one, homeschool
- 2:03Speaker 1: families are abandoning home education. You see this. And we're
- 2:07Speaker 1: seeing it more and more, homeschool families that are abandoning
- 2:09Speaker 1: home education for a variety of different reasons. Two, homeschool
- 2:15Speaker 1: children graduating without a vision or a commitment to home education.
- 2:20Speaker 1: These two things really got me to thinking over the
- 2:22Speaker 1: last several years, seeing these trends, seeing the trend of
- 2:27Speaker 1: homeschool families jumping ship, deciding not to homeschool, or even
- 2:31Speaker 1: the ones that do. And there are a lot of you,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and you know who you are. You came here this weekend.
- 2:36Speaker 1: because you decided to homeschool for now, for this semester.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You don't know what's happening after this semester, but you're
- 2:44Speaker 1: committed for this semester. You're not committed to it as
- 2:47Speaker 1: a lifestyle. You're not committed to it in principle. You're
- 2:50Speaker 1: just going to do it for right now. If you
- 2:53Speaker 1: can't say amen, you ought to say ouch, okay? And
- 2:58Speaker 1: run into so many kids, so many homeschool kids who
- 3:01Speaker 1: just have no vision and no desire at all. for
- 3:04Speaker 1: home education. And I think this goes to the heart
- 3:07Speaker 1: of the why and the how, not understanding the why
- 3:11Speaker 1: and the how. Families jumping ship. Why are they? Strained
- 3:14Speaker 1: marriages that cannot sustain a long-term commitment to home education.
- 3:18Speaker 1: One of the messages that I'm going to be sharing
- 3:20Speaker 1: this weekend is don't let home education destroy your marriage.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It's happening. It's happening. There are people who homeschool their
- 3:28Speaker 1: kids 20, 25 years The last kid leaves, they look
- 3:33Speaker 1: at each other and realize that without the kids, they
- 3:35Speaker 1: got nothing. Because their whole life was centered around homeschooling
- 3:38Speaker 1: those kids. Those kids are gone. Their marriage is over.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It happens. It happens. Okay? So that's one reason some
- 3:49Speaker 1: people abandon home education. Two, a commitment to the God
- 3:53Speaker 1: of sport. A commitment to the God of sport. We
- 3:57Speaker 1: can't homeschool because... You know, little Junebug got to play football.
- 4:03Speaker 1: And you can't play football if you homeschool. So we
- 4:05Speaker 1: can't homeschool because, you know, God knows he can't be
- 4:09Speaker 1: a well-rounded human being if he doesn't play football. Three, deception.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You know, advanced placement courses in the high schools. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you get to high schools and they offer these AP
- 4:26Speaker 1: courses with AP credits. You know, these advanced placement courses.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And you're going, man, this stuff is hard. I don't
- 4:32Speaker 1: understand this stuff. You know, this calculus stuff, this trigonometry stuff.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Over at the high school, they've got advanced placement courses in,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you know, geometry and calculus and all that good stuff.
- 4:43Speaker 1: By the way, how many of you know that in
- 4:45Speaker 1: order to teach geometry or trigonometry or calculus at a
- 4:48Speaker 1: public high school in the United States, you don't have
- 4:50Speaker 1: to have a degree in mathematics? You have to have
- 4:53Speaker 1: a degree in education. That's it. You don't have to
- 4:57Speaker 1: have a degree in mathematics. If you have a degree
- 4:58Speaker 1: in mathematics and you try to go to the public
- 5:00Speaker 1: school and teach math, they'll tell you you can't do that. Well,
- 5:06Speaker 1: I have a PhD in mathematics. I can't teach math
- 5:09Speaker 1: to high school kids? No. Why? Well, because you don't
- 5:12Speaker 1: have an education degree. So you have not been versed
- 5:15Speaker 1: in the ways of neo-Marxism and socialism. Therefore, you can't
- 5:21Speaker 1: teach our kids math. Don't you think we're trying to
- 5:27Speaker 1: teach math around this camp? How many of you know
- 5:34Speaker 1: that in these advanced placement classes all over Houston, all
- 5:38Speaker 1: over the state of Texas, that most of them are
- 5:41Speaker 1: not doing the subjects that they're giving credit for? They're
- 5:45Speaker 1: not doing it. Why? Because the kids aren't capable of it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: So the kids come in to this advanced placement geometry class.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Teacher gives a test. Most of the kids fail the test.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm telling you a true story here, by the way.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Most kids fail the test. So teachers are like, okay,
- 6:01Speaker 1: y'all made it to AP Geometry and what you really
- 6:05Speaker 1: need is some arithmetic. So now he's got a choice.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Flunk everybody and lose his job. By the way, inappropriate
- 6:14Speaker 1: sexual contact with a kid and they might move you
- 6:17Speaker 1: to another school. You flunk too many kids, you're out
- 6:20Speaker 1: of there. They won't tolerate that. So If you're going
- 6:27Speaker 1: to flunk too many kids and they don't understand the
- 6:30Speaker 1: subject that you're teaching, advanced placement, geometry, calculus, or whatever,
- 6:34Speaker 1: what do you have to do? You have to not
- 6:38Speaker 1: teach the subject that they're going to get credit for,
- 6:41Speaker 1: which is why when they go to Texas or to
- 6:43Speaker 1: A & M or wherever and take their test, they
- 6:46Speaker 1: get in, they get these wonderful scholarships because they took
- 6:48Speaker 1: AP calculus. They get there and take a test to
- 6:52Speaker 1: get placed in math in college and end up in
- 6:55Speaker 1: remedial math. And then you get mad because my kid
- 6:59Speaker 1: took AP at, you know, exemplary school. And then y'all
- 7:05Speaker 1: go say that he doesn't. The other one is the
- 7:13Speaker 1: Trojan horse. Not so much here in Texas, but all
- 7:16Speaker 1: around the country you're finding this. All around the country,
- 7:18Speaker 1: here's what they're doing. The government is getting smart. Government, G-U-P-M-I-N-T.
- 7:22Speaker 1: By the way, that's how you spell that. The government
- 7:24Speaker 1: is getting smart. So... Here's what they're doing. All over
- 7:28Speaker 1: the country, they are coming and they're saying to people, listen, listen,
- 7:31Speaker 1: homeschool mom, we know it's hard. Here's what we'll do
- 7:34Speaker 1: for you. We're from the government and we're here to
- 7:37Speaker 1: help you. Here's what we're going to do. And they go,
- 7:43Speaker 1: we'll give you a laptop. We'll give you some cash. Okay.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And then here's the clincher. We'll keep all your records
- 7:54Speaker 1: for you. Homeschool moms all over the country are like, really?
- 7:58Speaker 1: For real? For real? Like, I don't, you can stop
- 8:01Speaker 1: right there. Don't sell it when it's sold. You're going
- 8:03Speaker 1: to keep my records for me? I'm all over that.
- 8:06Speaker 1: The money, the laptop, that's good. But you're going to
- 8:09Speaker 1: keep my records for me, right? And so they go
- 8:11Speaker 1: into a government program. So now the government gets to
- 8:16Speaker 1: count the child as being in the school system. So
- 8:19Speaker 1: they get the full freight of the tax dollar per
- 8:22Speaker 1: child for that kid. They hand off the curriculum to
- 8:26Speaker 1: you so you do the work at home. By the way,
- 8:28Speaker 1: not your curriculum, but theirs. They give you a kickback,
- 8:32Speaker 1: 30 pieces of silver. And everybody goes off smiling. So
- 8:46Speaker 1: some people are leaving for that. What about these unconvinced children?
- 8:51Speaker 1: Some of them are unconvinced just because of the hypocrisy.
- 8:54Speaker 1: that they see. Home education will reveal the hypocrisy in
- 9:01Speaker 1: your life and in your family. Amen, hallelujah, praise the Lord, somebody.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It will do it, okay? It will do it. And
- 9:10Speaker 1: these homeschool kids, they're seeing it. They're figuring it out.
- 9:13Speaker 1: We're doing this for people on the outside. It's not real. Secondly, legalism,
- 9:18Speaker 1: this unsustainable legalism, which is rampant in the homeschool movement. Rampant.
- 9:25Speaker 1: When I entered into this world, I thought, this is
- 9:28Speaker 1: a homeschool movement. These are pioneering people, right? Not so much.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Not so much. The number one question that I hear
- 9:35Speaker 1: at homeschool conferences everywhere I go is, is there a
- 9:38Speaker 1: curriculum for that? Because God forbid that we should have
- 9:44Speaker 1: to actually just sort of think through how to adapt
- 9:47Speaker 1: something for our family. We want a paint-by-numbers kit. And
- 9:53Speaker 1: we want to evaluate the paint by numbers kit, not
- 9:56Speaker 1: by whether or not it matches our biblical theological. philosophical
- 10:00Speaker 1: approach to education, but by what do your kids look
- 10:04Speaker 1: like on the outside. So if you wash the outside
- 10:08Speaker 1: of the cup real good, you can sell stuff to homeschoolers.
- 10:14Speaker 1: And we end up mired in legalism. Worldliness worldliness. And
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'll explain that in a moment. A lack of vision.
- 10:26Speaker 1: We just don't have a vision for what we're doing.
- 10:28Speaker 1: That's why we say, yeah, I'm homeschooling for this semester.
- 10:31Speaker 1: We're doing it now. We're doing it because it kind
- 10:33Speaker 1: of works for us right now. But if something else
- 10:35Speaker 1: comes along that works better, then we'll jump ship and
- 10:37Speaker 1: we'll do that. A complete lack of vision for what
- 10:39Speaker 1: we do. What's the problem? Two problems. One, we have
- 10:42Speaker 1: the what without the why. That's one problem. We have
- 10:45Speaker 1: the what without the why. What are we going to do?
- 10:47Speaker 1: We're going to homeschool. Why? Why? Because I don't know,
- 10:54Speaker 1: we tried other stuff. Or we have the wrong why.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That may be worse. You know, you can have the
- 11:02Speaker 1: what without the why. That's a problem. You can have
- 11:05Speaker 1: the wrong why. You can be doing it for the
- 11:06Speaker 1: wrong reasons. The what without the why. Listen to this,
- 11:10Speaker 1: Proverbs chapter 20, verse 25. It is a snare to
- 11:13Speaker 1: say rationally, it is holy, and to reflect only after
- 11:18Speaker 1: making vows. What are you going to do? We're going
- 11:23Speaker 1: to homeschool. Why? I don't know. I'll get back to
- 11:25Speaker 1: you on that one. It's a snare. Again, Proverbs 2,
- 11:29Speaker 1: 1 to 5. My son, if you receive my words
- 11:33Speaker 1: and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear
- 11:37Speaker 1: attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding. Yes,
- 11:40Speaker 1: if you call out for insight and raise your voice
- 11:44Speaker 1: for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search
- 11:47Speaker 1: for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand
- 11:49Speaker 1: the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
- 11:54Speaker 1: That's how we seek after it. What about the wrong why?
- 11:58Speaker 1: There are some wrong whys out there. And this is
- 12:01Speaker 1: where we get to the worldliness, by the way. This
- 12:04Speaker 1: is the irony. So you have people who can have
- 12:06Speaker 1: legalism and worldliness all at the same time. And you
- 12:09Speaker 1: see it in the homeschool movement. You've got the legalism
- 12:11Speaker 1: because we're just watching the outside of the cup. Our
- 12:14Speaker 1: only goal is that our children behave in a way
- 12:15Speaker 1: that they don't embarrass us. But then you can have worldliness. Why?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Why are you homeschooling? So that we can get higher
- 12:23Speaker 1: test scores. So they can have a higher GPA. So
- 12:28Speaker 1: that they can do better in college. And all those
- 12:31Speaker 1: things are true. But they're the wrong reason. That's wrong.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Or we just want to escape the evil of the
- 12:37Speaker 1: government school campus. That's the wrong why. That's the wrong why.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I always think I love to do this. You know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: people say, well, I'm bringing my kids home. Why? Well,
- 12:48Speaker 1: because of all the sin in the public schools. Really?
- 12:50Speaker 1: What are you doing about sin in your house? Because
- 12:56Speaker 1: I don't know about you. My kids' parents are sinners. Sinners.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And so people jump ship because if I can find
- 13:10Speaker 1: some higher test scores somewhere else, then I'll go there.
- 13:14Speaker 1: If I can find higher college GPA through another means,
- 13:19Speaker 1: then I'll go there. And that's what I mean by worldliness.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Why are you doing this? Higher scores, better grades, better job,
- 13:27Speaker 1: more money, better future. That's worldliness. We're not seeking God.
- 13:31Speaker 1: We're seeking stuff. That's the wrong why. What's the right why? Well,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked. Here's what we're going to deal with.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Are these not projecting for you? I ain't wrong for
- 13:45Speaker 1: that because I got it plugged up over here. It
- 13:47Speaker 1: should be projecting for you. Y'all want to fix that?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Don't make me come back there. Okay. All right. There
- 13:57Speaker 1: we go. So here's the right why. Number one, we
- 14:03Speaker 1: do it because we're convinced by Scripture. We do it
- 14:05Speaker 1: because we're convinced by Scripture. And I hear you. You go, well, education.
- 14:09Speaker 1: The word education doesn't appear in the Bible, nor does
- 14:11Speaker 1: the word Trinity. Hope you believe that one. Because we
- 14:17Speaker 1: understand our role and responsibility as parents. Because we desire
- 14:21Speaker 1: to advance the kingdom of God and we desire to
- 14:23Speaker 1: bless the kingdom of man. That's why we do this. One,
- 14:27Speaker 1: convinced by scripture. What do we mean by this? Folks,
- 14:31Speaker 1: home education is not just preferable, but it's biblical. It's biblical.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Though not everyone can or must homeschool, Christians are obligated
- 14:41Speaker 1: to give their children a Christian education. You'd be amazed
- 14:47Speaker 1: at how controversial that statement is. I've made that statement publicly.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I've made that statement in a couple of books. And
- 14:54Speaker 1: there are people out there who just get all kinds
- 14:56Speaker 1: of mad at that statement right there. That Christians have
- 15:00Speaker 1: a biblical obligation to give their children a Christian education.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I don't. say that everybody has to homeschool. I don't.
- 15:09Speaker 1: By the way, even if we did, how would you
- 15:11Speaker 1: define it? Everybody has to homeschool. That's great. Can they
- 15:14Speaker 1: go somewhere for piano lessons? Can you be part of
- 15:17Speaker 1: a co-op? I mean, we could just go on and
- 15:20Speaker 1: on and on and on and on, just defining that, right? Thirdly, therefore,
- 15:26Speaker 1: government education, I know I misspelled it right there, government education,
- 15:31Speaker 1: which is anti-Christian by federal mandate, by the way, is
- 15:35Speaker 1: not a viable option for a Christian parent. Government education
- 15:41Speaker 1: is not a viable option. So I'm not a pastor
- 15:45Speaker 1: who you will hear say, public school, private school, homeschool,
- 15:48Speaker 1: whatever the Lord leads you to do, I do not
- 15:51Speaker 1: believe that those are morally equal options. And the government
- 15:56Speaker 1: education option is not an acceptable one for Christian parents
- 16:02Speaker 1: because the government education system is anti-Christian by federal mandate
- 16:07Speaker 1: and was designed to destroy the Christian faith, the American
- 16:13Speaker 1: education system. So where do we get this from? Well, scripturally,
- 16:20Speaker 1: we must view education as discipleship. Deuteronomy 6, 6 and 7.
- 16:27Speaker 1: These words that I'm commanding you today should be in
- 16:28Speaker 1: your heart. You should teach them diligently to your children.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And so talk to them when you sit in your house,
- 16:33Speaker 1: when you walk by the way, when you lie down
- 16:36Speaker 1: and when you rise. I had a public school administrator once.
- 16:41Speaker 1: True story. When I talked about this, I was doing
- 16:44Speaker 1: a worldview conference at a church and I talked about
- 16:46Speaker 1: education because you can't separate education and worldview. Education is
- 16:50Speaker 1: the number one shaper of worldview, period. And so I
- 16:53Speaker 1: talked about this and talked about this passage and she
- 16:55Speaker 1: came up to me again, public school administrator, committed her
- 16:58Speaker 1: whole life to public education system. Absolutely committed to public education.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Just could not believe that I had the audacity to
- 17:04Speaker 1: say the things that I was saying about the education
- 17:06Speaker 1: system and worldview. And she talked about this passage in particular.
- 17:09Speaker 1: She said, I just always thought that referred to non-school hours. Yeah,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just wondering if I can ask you
- 17:26Speaker 1: two questions, ma'am. Number one, what hours are not covered
- 17:30Speaker 1: there in that passage? And number two, where was Moses
- 17:34Speaker 1: sending his kids to school? Luke 640, a disciple is
- 17:41Speaker 1: not above his teacher, but everyone, when he is fully trained,
- 17:44Speaker 1: will be like his teacher. Not only that, we must
- 17:50Speaker 1: protect our children from ungodly influence. We must protect our
- 17:54Speaker 1: children from ungodly influences. Can we eradicate ungodly influence? No.
- 17:59Speaker 1: We can protect our children. Psalm 1, 1 and 2.
- 18:04Speaker 1: This is one of those that you're going to be
- 18:05Speaker 1: looking at the back of your Bible like, was that
- 18:06Speaker 1: in my Bible before? And did it say what it says?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners,
- 18:12Speaker 1: nor sits in the seat of scoffers. But his delight
- 18:15Speaker 1: is in the law of the Lord, and on his
- 18:16Speaker 1: law he meditates during non-school hours. I mean, anybody who's
- 18:25Speaker 1: been to college reads that passage and you go, he's
- 18:28Speaker 1: talking about the university. Psalm 14.1. The fool says in
- 18:35Speaker 1: his heart there is no God. They are corrupt. They
- 18:37Speaker 1: do abominable deeds. There is none who does good. There
- 18:41Speaker 1: are no good public schools. By definition, they're not good. Why?
- 18:47Speaker 1: Because they're fools who've said in their hearts there is
- 18:49Speaker 1: no God. Their curriculum says that. They're mandated public. by
- 18:53Speaker 1: federal law to say that. Therefore, there are no good
- 18:58Speaker 1: public schools. Proverbs 1.7, the fear of the Lord is
- 19:01Speaker 1: the beginning of knowledge. Fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 13.20,
- 19:08Speaker 1: whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion
- 19:11Speaker 1: of fools will be salt and light. Oh, my bad.
- 19:16Speaker 1: That's not what it says right there. Matthew 18, 7.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I love this because there are people who always say
- 19:27Speaker 1: things like, you know, your children, you're going to shelter
- 19:30Speaker 1: your children. You're going to send your children out in
- 19:32Speaker 1: the world and they're not going to know what to do.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And you need to send your children out there so
- 19:35Speaker 1: they can learn how to how to interact with sinful people.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I already told you they get that at home. But
- 19:46Speaker 1: here's the other problem. When you say that, here's what
- 19:48Speaker 1: you're saying. The body of Christ is incapable of bringing
- 19:55Speaker 1: a believer to full maturity. Only sinful men can complete
- 20:00Speaker 1: your sanctification. Matthew 18, 7. Woe to the world for
- 20:07Speaker 1: temptation to sin. For it is necessary that temptations come,
- 20:10Speaker 1: but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I do not want to be that one in my
- 20:14Speaker 1: child's life. Temptation is going to come in my child's life.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I do not want to be the source of it.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I do not want to force them into settings where
- 20:22Speaker 1: they will be tempted. Woe to the one by whom
- 20:25Speaker 1: the temptation comes. Hey, I don't write the mail. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: just deliver it. That's Bible right there, y'all. Okay? We
- 20:32Speaker 1: must avoid unbiblical teaching. Romans 12.2. Here's another one. So
- 20:39Speaker 1: familiar that we completely miss it. Do not be conformed
- 20:42Speaker 1: to this world. By the way, what can you think
- 20:46Speaker 1: of a more conforming exercise than education? From kindergarten through
- 20:51Speaker 1: 12th grade, a child spends 14,000 seat hours in school. 14,000
- 20:58Speaker 1: instructional hours. You tell me, what is a more conforming
- 21:02Speaker 1: exercise than that? There is none. Do not be conformed
- 21:06Speaker 1: to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
- 21:08Speaker 1: your mind, that by testing you may discern what is
- 21:11Speaker 1: the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- 21:15Speaker 1: 2 Corinthians 10.5, we heard it earlier. We destroy arguments
- 21:19Speaker 1: and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God
- 21:22Speaker 1: and take every thought captive to obey Christ. Is math
- 21:26Speaker 1: a thought? Is science a thought? Is history a thought?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Is political science a thought? Take it captive to obey Christ.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Colossians 2.8, see to it that no one takes you
- 21:38Speaker 1: captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition,
- 21:42Speaker 1: according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not
- 21:45Speaker 1: according to Christ. How do we read that in our
- 21:47Speaker 1: Bibles and say it's okay to syndicate to the government
- 21:50Speaker 1: for their education? I don't get it. 1 Timothy 6,
- 21:55Speaker 1: 20 and 21. Oh, Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely
- 22:02Speaker 1: called knowledge, for by professing it, Some have swerved from
- 22:07Speaker 1: the faith. We must also teach God's law. We have to.
- 22:10Speaker 1: We have to teach God's law. By the way, I
- 22:12Speaker 1: love this because people always use the salt and light argument.
- 22:14Speaker 1: By the way, the salt and light argument is the
- 22:16Speaker 1: only argument that Christian people have when it comes to
- 22:20Speaker 1: discussing home education. There is not another argument. That's it.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's the salt and light argument. They used to use
- 22:26Speaker 1: the socialization argument. But that one, you know, it's not
- 22:30Speaker 1: even funny anymore. We don't even do that, you know.
- 22:35Speaker 1: What about socialization? Like, I know. That's why we homeschool.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I'm not a socialist. There's only one, only one. We
- 22:56Speaker 1: got to be honest, right? We got to be honest.
- 22:58Speaker 1: You can't just like build up straw men and destroy
- 23:01Speaker 1: your opponent. You got to be fair. There is one
- 23:04Speaker 1: One good and very necessary social skill that a kid
- 23:09Speaker 1: can learn in school. And it's only one. And that's
- 23:14Speaker 1: how to stand in a line. But if you have
- 23:18Speaker 1: enough kids, you can teach that one at home too.
- 23:25Speaker 1: But the salt and light argument. You need to send
- 23:28Speaker 1: your kid to the public school so they can be
- 23:29Speaker 1: salt and light. There's so many problems with this. But
- 23:33Speaker 1: for the sake of time, let me just cut to
- 23:34Speaker 1: the chase. A couple of problems. Let me help you
- 23:37Speaker 1: with this. Indicatives versus imperatives. Indicatives, imperatives. Indicatives, I'm indicating
- 23:43Speaker 1: what something is. Imperative, I'm telling you something to do. Indicative,
- 23:46Speaker 1: that is a chair. I'm indicating what it is. Imperative,
- 23:49Speaker 1: sit in the chair. There's a huge difference between indicatives
- 23:52Speaker 1: and imperatives. We've got to understand this. So people tell us,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you need to send your kid to school so you
- 23:57Speaker 1: can go be salt and light. We're commanded to go
- 23:59Speaker 1: be salt and light. So salt and light is supposed
- 24:02Speaker 1: to be an Imperative, right? Okay, let's just read the Bible.
- 24:06Speaker 1: You are the salt of the earth. That would be
- 24:09Speaker 1: an indicative, not an imperative. But if the salt has
- 24:14Speaker 1: lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It
- 24:18Speaker 1: is no longer good for anything except to be thrown
- 24:20Speaker 1: out and trampled under people's feet. Okay? So not only
- 24:24Speaker 1: do I have an indicative here and not an imperative,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but I also have a warning here that would move
- 24:29Speaker 1: me toward home education, not away from it. But wait.
- 24:35Speaker 1: are the light of the world. Uh-oh, another indicative. It's
- 24:38Speaker 1: not an imperative. It's an indicative. It's not an imperative,
- 24:42Speaker 1: which means that wherever you are, this is what you are.
- 24:45Speaker 1: We have not been told to go anywhere. A city
- 24:48Speaker 1: set on a hill cannot be hidden. By the way,
- 24:50Speaker 1: a city set on a hill is a city that
- 24:51Speaker 1: is separate and distinct, which is why we homeschool. Nor
- 24:58Speaker 1: do people light a lamp and put it under a basket,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but on a stand. So that it gives light to
- 25:04Speaker 1: all in the... It's really bad for them, y'all. In
- 25:13Speaker 1: the same way, let your light shine before others so
- 25:15Speaker 1: that they may see your good works and give glory
- 25:17Speaker 1: to your Father who is in heaven. There is an imperative.
- 25:21Speaker 1: But what does this have to do with the training
- 25:23Speaker 1: of the mind? What does this have to do with children?
- 25:26Speaker 1: Nothing whatsoever. So we rip this passage kicking and screaming
- 25:30Speaker 1: out of context. That's not even the worst part, y'all.
- 25:36Speaker 1: There's more that comes after this. Do not think I've
- 25:40Speaker 1: come to abolish the law. The prophets, I've not come
- 25:42Speaker 1: to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly, I
- 25:44Speaker 1: say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not
- 25:47Speaker 1: an iota, not a dot will pass from the law
- 25:49Speaker 1: until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the
- 25:53Speaker 1: least of these commandments and teaches, now we've got teaching,
- 25:58Speaker 1: and teaches others to do the same will be called
- 26:00Speaker 1: least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does them
- 26:05Speaker 1: and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom
- 26:07Speaker 1: of heaven. Not only do they rip this passage out
- 26:10Speaker 1: of context and turn indicatives into imperatives, not only do
- 26:15Speaker 1: they insert the idea of educating our children where it
- 26:18Speaker 1: doesn't exist, but in the very next paragraph, their argument
- 26:22Speaker 1: is refuted again. In other words, that dog won't hunt.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Matthew 22, 34 to 36. Pharisees heard that he had
- 26:37Speaker 1: silenced the Sadducees. They gathered together and one of them,
- 26:40Speaker 1: a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. Teacher,
- 26:43Speaker 1: which is the great commandment in the law? Now this
- 26:45Speaker 1: is a legitimate question. Sometimes we forget this. It's a
- 26:48Speaker 1: legitimate question. There were several schools of thought. Let me
- 26:51Speaker 1: give you at least three. One school of thought was
- 26:53Speaker 1: that the first commandment was the greatest commandment. That the
- 26:57Speaker 1: first commandment was the greatest commandment. And it was sort
- 27:00Speaker 1: of the overarching commandment For all the commandments. Some argue
- 27:03Speaker 1: that the fifth commandment was the greatest commandment because it
- 27:06Speaker 1: was a bridge between the first table of the law
- 27:08Speaker 1: and the second table of the law. First four commandments,
- 27:10Speaker 1: vertical commandments, first table of the law. Last six commandments,
- 27:14Speaker 1: second table of the law, the horizontal commandments. And so
- 27:17Speaker 1: some argue that commandment number five, honor your father and
- 27:19Speaker 1: your mother, was a bridge between the first and second
- 27:22Speaker 1: table of the law and therefore it was the great commandment.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Others argue that the tenth commandment was the great commandment
- 27:27Speaker 1: because ultimately coveting is what led to the breaking of
- 27:30Speaker 1: any of the commandments. So this is a legitimate question. Jesus,
- 27:33Speaker 1: what are you going to say? One, five, ten. Which
- 27:36Speaker 1: school of thought do you hold to? And notice in
- 27:42Speaker 1: the law, the Ten Commandments. And he said to them,
- 27:47Speaker 1: you should love the Lord your God with all your heart,
- 27:48Speaker 1: with all your soul, and with all your mind. This
- 27:50Speaker 1: is the great and first commandment. You see, that right
- 27:54Speaker 1: there is basically a summary of the first table of
- 27:58Speaker 1: the law. Jesus, what's the greatest commandment? I'm going to
- 28:02Speaker 1: have to say one through four. And the second is
- 28:08Speaker 1: like it. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. By
- 28:11Speaker 1: the way, that's five through ten. On these two commandments
- 28:17Speaker 1: depend all the law and the prophets. We must teach
- 28:22Speaker 1: the law of God. We must. We must be gospel centered.
- 28:27Speaker 1: The law is not an end in itself. The law
- 28:30Speaker 1: is a tutor. The law points us somewhere. The law condemns.
- 28:33Speaker 1: The law makes us know that we need something else.
- 28:35Speaker 1: What is that something that we need? It's the gospel.
- 28:38Speaker 1: You're not going to get the law in our government schools.
- 28:41Speaker 1: You're certainly not going to get the gospel. Let me
- 28:43Speaker 1: take that back. You are going to get the law.
- 28:44Speaker 1: You don't get nothing but law in our public schools.
- 28:47Speaker 1: It won't be as obvious, but if you don't have
- 28:51Speaker 1: the gospel, all you got is law. I will put
- 28:55Speaker 1: enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring
- 28:57Speaker 1: and her offspring. He shall bruise your head. You shall
- 29:00Speaker 1: bruise his heel. First proclamation of the gospel. Romans 1,
- 29:04Speaker 1: 16 to 17. I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for
- 29:07Speaker 1: it is the power of God to salvation to everyone
- 29:09Speaker 1: who believes, the Jew first and also the Greek. For
- 29:12Speaker 1: in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith
- 29:14Speaker 1: for faith. As it is written, the righteous shall live
- 29:18Speaker 1: by faith. Again, Galatians 1, 6 through 9. We must
- 29:26Speaker 1: be good stewards. We have to be good stewards. Again,
- 29:29Speaker 1: all of these, I'm just giving you the biblical arguments
- 29:31Speaker 1: for why we owe our children a Christian education. This
- 29:35Speaker 1: is the why part of what we are doing. This
- 29:38Speaker 1: is why we own the school. Mark 12, 15 to 17.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.
- 29:48Speaker 1: And they brought one. And he said to him, whose
- 29:50Speaker 1: likeness and inscription is this? They said to him, Caesar's.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Jesus said, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's
- 29:56Speaker 1: and to God the things that are God's. And they
- 29:58Speaker 1: marveled at him. Now you might go, now what in
- 29:59Speaker 1: the world does this have to do with education? Bring
- 30:02Speaker 1: me a child whose image is on the child. God's.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Then you must not render him to Caesar. Unless the
- 30:17Speaker 1: Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays
- 30:22Speaker 1: awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise
- 30:25Speaker 1: up and Go late to rest, eating the bread of
- 30:28Speaker 1: anxious toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold,
- 30:33Speaker 1: children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of
- 30:35Speaker 1: the womb, a reward like arrows in the hand of
- 30:38Speaker 1: a warrior who sends them to his enemy to have
- 30:41Speaker 1: them honed and turned on him. I think not. Are
- 30:46Speaker 1: the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who
- 30:49Speaker 1: fills his quiver with them. He shall not be put
- 30:51Speaker 1: to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gates.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Let me get to number two. Your role and responsibilities
- 31:00Speaker 1: as parents. This is why we do what we do.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Because of our role and responsibilities as parents. Ephesians 6, 1-4.
- 31:06Speaker 1: We know this. Children, obey your parents in the Lord,
- 31:08Speaker 1: for this is right. Honor your father and your mother.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It's the first commandment with a promise. By the way,
- 31:11Speaker 1: it's the only one with a promise. They may go
- 31:13Speaker 1: well with you. You may live long in the land. Fathers,
- 31:16Speaker 1: do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them
- 31:18Speaker 1: up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. We
- 31:21Speaker 1: have a duty and obligation to bring up our children
- 31:23Speaker 1: in the instruction of the Lord. Parents represent God's authority
- 31:29Speaker 1: in our children's lives. We model Christ's relationship to the
- 31:32Speaker 1: church in our marriage. We bring them up in the
- 31:34Speaker 1: discipline and instruction of the Lord, and we preach the
- 31:37Speaker 1: gospel to them with a view toward their conversion. This
- 31:42Speaker 1: is our job. I want those 14,000 hours. I don't
- 31:48Speaker 1: want to give them to someone who doesn't understand these
- 31:51Speaker 1: four things. For the sake of time, I am going
- 31:54Speaker 1: to move forward here Just a bit. Three, advancing the
- 32:02Speaker 1: kingdom of God. We do this because we want to
- 32:04Speaker 1: advance the kingdom of God. This is really important. This
- 32:07Speaker 1: is huge because we miss this in the homeschool movement.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And this is one of the reasons that our kids
- 32:12Speaker 1: oftentimes want to leave the homeschool movement. Because in the
- 32:16Speaker 1: homeschool movement, here's what you hear from people. Not, we
- 32:18Speaker 1: want to advance the kingdom of God, but we want
- 32:21Speaker 1: to run away from the kingdom of man. We want
- 32:24Speaker 1: to run. We want to hide. We don't want to
- 32:28Speaker 1: be around them. And so we advance the kingdom of
- 32:31Speaker 1: God by going and hiding somewhere and outbreeding them and
- 32:34Speaker 1: waiting until everything is in rubbles. And then we come
- 32:37Speaker 1: out with all of our children and then we take
- 32:40Speaker 1: everything over. That's not biblical Christianity. It is not. It
- 32:48Speaker 1: is not. It is not. Listen, I got nothing at
- 32:51Speaker 1: all against stretching your legs and having a more rural
- 32:55Speaker 1: life or whatever. If that's what you want, that's fine.
- 32:58Speaker 1: It's one thing to desire those things for purposeful reasons.
- 33:02Speaker 1: It's another thing to try to get away from people.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Some of y'all are going to have a problem in
- 33:05Speaker 1: heaven because heaven ain't the country. It's a city. There
- 33:15Speaker 1: are two and a half million unchurched people in the
- 33:19Speaker 1: greater Houston area. There's countries that aren't that big. I
- 33:25Speaker 1: want this city I want all of it for Christ.
- 33:29Speaker 1: I want this city. I don't want to run from
- 33:31Speaker 1: this city. I don't want to hide from this city.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I don't want my children to run from this city
- 33:36Speaker 1: or hide from this city. I want my children to
- 33:38Speaker 1: pour out their life for this city because God brought
- 33:42Speaker 1: us to this city. I educate my children at home,
- 33:45Speaker 1: not because I'm scared of this city, but because if
- 33:48Speaker 1: my city knew what I was doing, it ought to
- 33:50Speaker 1: be scared of my kids. That's the idea. We advance
- 33:55Speaker 1: the kingdom. That's what we're doing. Stop running. Stop hiding.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Your children are to be warriors. You are to be
- 34:04Speaker 1: a warrior. Don't run from the world. Do you know
- 34:08Speaker 1: who is in you? The power that raised Christ from
- 34:11Speaker 1: the dead? And do you know what's wrong with the
- 34:14Speaker 1: city that we're so trying to run away from? They
- 34:17Speaker 1: need what you have. And because they need what you have,
- 34:21Speaker 1: you run from them. Shame on us for having this
- 34:24Speaker 1: kind of mentality. Shame on us. And what's sad is
- 34:28Speaker 1: our children equate it with homeschooling. So when they're out
- 34:32Speaker 1: from under homeschooling, if they have a passion for Christ
- 34:36Speaker 1: and a passion for the city, guess what they think
- 34:38Speaker 1: they can't be? Homeschoolers. Because a lot of them have
- 34:44Speaker 1: never seen one with a passion for Christ and a
- 34:48Speaker 1: passion for the city and a desire to to advance
- 34:52Speaker 1: the kingdom of God. All they've seen is people who
- 34:54Speaker 1: are scared, who run away. That's not who we are.
- 35:00Speaker 1: That can't be who we are. We are residents of
- 35:05Speaker 1: the kingdom. He has delivered us from the domain of
- 35:07Speaker 1: darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved
- 35:11Speaker 1: son in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
- 35:14Speaker 1: We are heirs of the kingdom. Listen, my beloved brothers.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the
- 35:21Speaker 1: world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom,
- 35:24Speaker 1: which he has promised to those who love him? We
- 35:27Speaker 1: are seeking the kingdom. Therefore, do not be anxious saying,
- 35:31Speaker 1: what shall we eat or what shall we drink or
- 35:33Speaker 1: what shall we wear? Or how should we protect our
- 35:36Speaker 1: kids or how should we keep them this or how
- 35:38Speaker 1: should we keep them that? For the Gentiles seek after
- 35:41Speaker 1: all these things. Your heavenly father knows that you need
- 35:45Speaker 1: them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and
- 35:48Speaker 1: his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Preach the kingdom. This gospel of the kingdom will be
- 35:56Speaker 1: proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations,
- 36:00Speaker 1: and then the end will come. You don't do that
- 36:03Speaker 1: by hiding. Anticipate the consummated kingdom. And the seventh angel
- 36:08Speaker 1: blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying,
- 36:12Speaker 1: The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of
- 36:15Speaker 1: our Lord. and of his Christ, and he shall reign
- 36:19Speaker 1: forever and ever. Fourthly, we desire to bless the kingdom
- 36:26Speaker 1: of man. Again, we don't run away. We desire to
- 36:31Speaker 1: be a blessing to the kingdom of man. We have
- 36:34Speaker 1: what they need. And so we turn outwardly to bless
- 36:38Speaker 1: them with what we have. That's our desire. That's our desire.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Some of you, quite frankly, need to become more worldly
- 36:48Speaker 1: in another way. Not worldly like we talked about earlier,
- 36:52Speaker 1: but worldly in another way. Some of you just need
- 36:55Speaker 1: to learn how to appreciate common grace. Some of you
- 36:58Speaker 1: just need to learn how to look out and appreciate
- 37:01Speaker 1: a building that's built in an excellent way. Not just
- 37:07Speaker 1: that it wasn't built by a Christian, therefore I can't
- 37:10Speaker 1: celebrate it. Really, the image of God than the individual
- 37:15Speaker 1: who built that building, whether they know it or not.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Some of you need to just be able to watch
- 37:18Speaker 1: the Olympics right now. No, we can't watch the Olympics
- 37:22Speaker 1: because our kids might catch something. No, you know what?
- 37:32Speaker 1: Some of you just need to sit there and marvel
- 37:35Speaker 1: at what men and women made in the image of
- 37:38Speaker 1: God are able to do with their bodies because of
- 37:42Speaker 1: the commitments that they've made to excellence some of you
- 37:46Speaker 1: just need to go to the museum and sit there
- 37:49Speaker 1: and look at a piece of art that wasn't done
- 37:52Speaker 1: by a Christian and say you know what it's magnificent
- 37:57Speaker 1: some of you just need to listen to a complicated
- 37:59Speaker 1: piece of music and then listen to it again and
- 38:02Speaker 1: again and again and again and again until you begin
- 38:06Speaker 1: to get it and unfold it with your mind just
- 38:09Speaker 1: because you appreciate the beauty that God has placed in
- 38:13Speaker 1: creation We desire to bless the kingdom of man because
- 38:22Speaker 1: it's worth blessing. The image of God resides there. I
- 38:30Speaker 1: want to go to a good school and make some
- 38:32Speaker 1: good money so that I can live someplace and hide
- 38:34Speaker 1: from the world. No, uh-uh. How about this? I want
- 38:39Speaker 1: to use the gifts and talents and abilities that God
- 38:41Speaker 1: has given me so that I can turn outward and
- 38:46Speaker 1: be a blessing to the kingdom of man. That's the
- 38:49Speaker 1: mentality we need to put into our children. Not you
- 38:52Speaker 1: need to run and hide, but you need to be
- 38:55Speaker 1: a blessing to the kingdom of man. For the sake
- 38:57Speaker 1: of time, let me move forward. Let's get into the how.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And specifically, how do we educate our children with a
- 39:06Speaker 1: biblical worldview perspective or from a biblical worldview perspective? Toward
- 39:11Speaker 1: a definition. Everybody talks about worldview. Let's define it here.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Ron Nash in his book Faith and Reason writes, a
- 39:17Speaker 1: worldview is a conceptual theme by which we consciously or
- 39:20Speaker 1: unconsciously place or fit everything we believe and by which
- 39:24Speaker 1: we interpret and judge reality. James Sire in his book
- 39:29Speaker 1: Naming the Elephant, it's the best named worldview book ever probably,
- 39:34Speaker 1: Naming the Elephant, our ground floor assumptions, ones that are
- 39:37Speaker 1: so basic that none more basic can be conceived, compose
- 39:41Speaker 1: our worldview. It's our most basic assumptions. And then here
- 39:45Speaker 1: from the late Chuck Colson and Nancy Piercy, who just
- 39:48Speaker 1: came to Houston, by the way, teaching at HBU. A
- 39:52Speaker 1: worldview is the sum total of our beliefs about the world.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Here's the key. The big picture that directs our daily
- 40:00Speaker 1: decisions and actions. Folks, your daily decisions and actions are
- 40:04Speaker 1: directed by your worldview. If I homeschool from a standpoint
- 40:08Speaker 1: of legalism, giving my children rules and laws, but not
- 40:13Speaker 1: from a worldview perspective, then while my children are in
- 40:16Speaker 1: my home under my rules and laws, they will abide
- 40:18Speaker 1: by my rules and laws, but when they leave, they'll
- 40:20Speaker 1: live by their worldview. If I didn't give them a
- 40:22Speaker 1: biblical worldview but gave them rules and laws, then what
- 40:24Speaker 1: happens when they leave my home? We've got to shape worldview.
- 40:30Speaker 1: We have to shape worldview. How are worldviews formed? It's interesting.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Worldviews are formed informally, uncritically, intergenerationally, and intergenerationally, and over time.
- 40:44Speaker 1: This is how worldviews are formed. It always amazes me.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Now everybody's trying to do these worldview things in a
- 40:51Speaker 1: couple of days and whatever. It takes time to form
- 40:55Speaker 1: a worldview. Basic functions of a worldview. They function like eyeglasses.
- 41:00Speaker 1: You ever heard the term looking at the world through
- 41:01Speaker 1: rose-colored glasses? Or a map. Some of you used a
- 41:06Speaker 1: map to get here today. You looked down at your
- 41:08Speaker 1: map and then you looked at the world around you
- 41:10Speaker 1: to see if it corresponded to your map. Your worldview
- 41:12Speaker 1: is like the map that governs you in that way.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Or a puzzle picture. You put together a 5,000-piece puzzle.
- 41:18Speaker 1: You don't dump the 5,000 pieces out and then throw
- 41:20Speaker 1: away the box with the picture on it. Right? You
- 41:23Speaker 1: have the box so that you can gauge where this
- 41:26Speaker 1: picture looks like it fits in the puzzle. So those
- 41:28Speaker 1: are just three illustrative ways to understand worldview. Two main
- 41:36Speaker 1: competing worldviews of our day, Christian theism and secular humanism.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Two approaches to worldview. One is the worldview metanarrative. The
- 41:44Speaker 1: other is worldview elements. Let's look at this. The Christian
- 41:47Speaker 1: worldview metanarrative or overarching story. Here it is. Creation, fall, redemption, consummation.
- 41:57Speaker 1: That's the story that explains our worldview. God created the world. Okay,
- 42:03Speaker 1: so what's wrong with the world? Well, what's wrong with
- 42:06Speaker 1: the world is that man has fallen. Well, how can
- 42:09Speaker 1: that be fixed? through redemption in Christ. But that didn't
- 42:13Speaker 1: even fix everything because ultimately there has to be the
- 42:16Speaker 1: consummation of all things in Christ. And so you look
- 42:20Speaker 1: at every issue in the world and in life through
- 42:24Speaker 1: this metanarrative, this story that explains who we are and
- 42:26Speaker 1: why we're here. Now compare that to the metanarrative of
- 42:30Speaker 1: secular humanism. Instead of creation, they've got Big Bang. Instead
- 42:34Speaker 1: of the fall, they've got evolution. Instead of redemption, they've
- 42:38Speaker 1: got therapy. Instead of consummation, they have utopia. Okay? This
- 42:45Speaker 1: is the worldview of our culture. We need to understand
- 42:48Speaker 1: the overarching metanarrative, the overarching story. The elements of worldview,
- 42:53Speaker 1: our view of God, our view of man, our view
- 42:57Speaker 1: of truth, our view of knowledge, and our view of
- 43:01Speaker 1: ethics comprise our worldview. Look at the two side by side,
- 43:05Speaker 1: and here we go. If we had time, we could
- 43:07Speaker 1: walk through these and look at certain issues of our
- 43:10Speaker 1: day and talk about how these issues are viewed differently
- 43:13Speaker 1: based upon your worldview. View of God, secular humanism is atheistic,
- 43:19Speaker 1: which is ironic. It's the dominant worldview of our culture
- 43:22Speaker 1: and it's atheistic. But most people in our culture say
- 43:24Speaker 1: they believe in God. How does that work? Well, hold on.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Christian theism, theistic. View of man, secular humanism, evolution. Christian theism,
- 43:31Speaker 1: special creation. View of truth, secular humanism, relative. Ours, objective.
- 43:36Speaker 1: View of knowledge. Here's the key. Naturalistic materialism is the
- 43:39Speaker 1: view of knowledge in secular humanism, which means that nature
- 43:42Speaker 1: is a closed system and matter is all that matters.
- 43:44Speaker 1: If there's nothing outside of nature, that means there's nothing
- 43:46Speaker 1: that is supernatural. So if a secular humanist says he
- 43:49Speaker 1: believes in God, he believes in a God that is
- 43:51Speaker 1: not supernatural, which is not a theistic view of God.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Christian theism, reason and revelation. There's no war between science
- 44:02Speaker 1: and faith. In fact, it's faith that gave us the
- 44:06Speaker 1: hard sciences. You understand the history of science. You know that.
- 44:10Speaker 1: View of ethics. Secondly, humanism says that they're cultural and
- 44:13Speaker 1: that they're negotiated. What's true here is not necessarily true there.
- 44:17Speaker 1: What's true now is not necessarily true then. Christian theism,
- 44:21Speaker 1: objective and universal. All right. Teaching worldview. All right. Got
- 44:28Speaker 1: a few minutes. Teaching worldview. We do this through what
- 44:31Speaker 1: we teach, why we teach, and how we teach. What
- 44:34Speaker 1: we teach. Our philosophy of education. Our philosophy of education
- 44:38Speaker 1: always kills me. If you want to ask me a
- 44:40Speaker 1: question that I will not answer, ask me what curriculum
- 44:43Speaker 1: we use. I will not answer that question for you.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I won't. Because there's a more fundamental question than that.
- 44:50Speaker 1: You've got to determine your philosophy of education. If you
- 44:53Speaker 1: don't understand your philosophy of education and you're trying to
- 44:55Speaker 1: pick a curriculum, God help you. Even if you do
- 45:00Speaker 1: understand your philosophy of education and you're trying to pick
- 45:02Speaker 1: a curriculum. By the way, new homeschool families, here's always
- 45:06Speaker 1: my rule of thumb. New homeschool family, they come and
- 45:08Speaker 1: they go, we're just beginning to do this and I
- 45:10Speaker 1: don't know what to do. Here's what you do. Just
- 45:12Speaker 1: walk through there and grab something that's pretty. Because whatever
- 45:16Speaker 1: you get this year, chances are you're probably not going
- 45:19Speaker 1: to be using it next year. So just go grab
- 45:21Speaker 1: something that's pretty so it looks good while you're figuring
- 45:23Speaker 1: out why it doesn't work for your family. Curriculum, which
- 45:29Speaker 1: flows from our philosophy of education. Our curriculum choices must
- 45:33Speaker 1: flow from our philosophy of education. Not by what kind
- 45:36Speaker 1: of scores that family got. Our schedule. By the way,
- 45:46Speaker 1: all of these things go to shaping our children's worldview.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Your philosophy of education will shape your children's worldview. The
- 45:52Speaker 1: curriculum you choose will shape your children's worldview. And why
- 45:55Speaker 1: you choose it will shape your children's worldview. Your schedule
- 45:57Speaker 1: will shape your children's worldview. I'm amazed at how many
- 46:00Speaker 1: families start school on the same day that the school
- 46:03Speaker 1: system starts school. If you do that, you just might
- 46:08Speaker 1: be in sin. You need to start like the next
- 46:13Speaker 1: week just on general principle, man. Why on earth do
- 46:21Speaker 1: we start, you know, right? Tell me we're on summer vacation.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Why are you on summer vacation? Why you got to
- 46:25Speaker 1: have a vacation in the summer? Who told you you
- 46:27Speaker 1: had to have vacation in the summer? And then we
- 46:30Speaker 1: get all these people, and they're like, you know, I
- 46:32Speaker 1: just don't know what to do because of my schedule
- 46:34Speaker 1: and with this and with that. This is a true story.
- 46:38Speaker 1: And I get this family, and they come, and we
- 46:40Speaker 1: just don't know what to do. We so want to homeschool,
- 46:42Speaker 1: and we've got this, and we've got that, and we
- 46:43Speaker 1: just don't know what to do, but we really want
- 46:45Speaker 1: to homeschool. And I'm like, why don't y'all teach your
- 46:48Speaker 1: children in the evening? Because their schedule was kind of
- 46:52Speaker 1: free for them to do it in the evening. And
- 46:55Speaker 1: the guy just went. And I said, you don't have
- 47:02Speaker 1: to say it, sir. Let me say it for you.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Because here's what your face is saying. We can do that? See,
- 47:15Speaker 1: some of y'all, when you start, some of you are
- 47:17Speaker 1: like sharecropper homeschoolers. You know, sharecroppers. Emancipation comes. Slaves free.
- 47:23Speaker 1: A lot of them didn't want to leave the plantation.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Stayed right there. Sharecroppers doing the same thing they did
- 47:28Speaker 1: when they were slaves. That's some of you. You're doing
- 47:31Speaker 1: the exact same thing that you were doing before y'all
- 47:34Speaker 1: started homeschooling. You're doing public school at home because it's
- 47:36Speaker 1: the only thing you know. When do you start? When
- 47:39Speaker 1: they say start. You're free. Start acting like it. I
- 47:47Speaker 1: go on vacation when they start school. Why we teach.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Why should Johnny learn how to read? Well, Johnny needs
- 47:59Speaker 1: to learn how to read because, you know, if Johnny
- 48:01Speaker 1: learns how to be a good reader, then he'll make
- 48:03Speaker 1: good grades and good scores and he'll get into a
- 48:05Speaker 1: good school. Wrong answer. When Johnny asks you why he
- 48:09Speaker 1: needs to learn how to read, you look him in
- 48:10Speaker 1: his face and you say, because the God of this
- 48:13Speaker 1: universe has communicated himself to us through language. And if
- 48:17Speaker 1: you learn how to read, you don't have to depend
- 48:20Speaker 1: on other people to tell you what God has said.
- 48:23Speaker 1: It's important for a man to learn how to read
- 48:25Speaker 1: so that he can read the very words of God.
- 48:27Speaker 1: That's why Johnny needs to learn how to read. And
- 48:30Speaker 1: if that's not your answer, you're shaping Johnny's worldview. Do
- 48:36Speaker 1: you see this? Because a lot of people are like, well,
- 48:39Speaker 1: they're just teaching subjects at school. I'll teach the Christianity
- 48:42Speaker 1: stuff at home. No, when the school teaches Johnny why
- 48:46Speaker 1: it's important to read, the school is shaping Johnny's worldview.
- 48:50Speaker 1: And if their answer is not the one that I
- 48:52Speaker 1: just gave you, they're shaping his worldview away from Christ. Johnny,
- 48:58Speaker 1: why should Johnny learn how to write? Well, because you're
- 49:01Speaker 1: made in the image of God and God communicates. You're
- 49:04Speaker 1: also commanded to communicate the gospel on behalf of the
- 49:07Speaker 1: God who saves us. And you're to do that in
- 49:10Speaker 1: a winsome fashion. You need to learn how to communicate
- 49:14Speaker 1: so that you can communicate the gospel winsomely. That's why.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Why should Johnny study math and science? Well, so all
- 49:23Speaker 1: the good jobs don't go off to Johnny. That's the
- 49:31Speaker 1: world's answer, right? No, no, no, no, no. Johnny, the
- 49:34Speaker 1: heavens declare the glory of God. And day by day
- 49:38Speaker 1: they pour forth speech. Through studying math and science, you
- 49:44Speaker 1: learn to read God's general revelation as well as his
- 49:47Speaker 1: special revelation. That's why it's important. Why should Johnny learn history?
- 49:56Speaker 1: History is the study of God's providence over time. That's why.
- 50:02Speaker 1: You want to know who God is? Look at the
- 50:04Speaker 1: way that he has dealt with people. through history. Do
- 50:09Speaker 1: you see the difference in these answers? The difference between
- 50:14Speaker 1: these answers and what you and I were told and
- 50:16Speaker 1: how our worldview about education was shaped? By the way,
- 50:19Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons that we're sharecropper homeschoolers because
- 50:21Speaker 1: our worldview was co-opted. We don't even know how to
- 50:25Speaker 1: think about education. How we teach shapes our children's worldview.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Attitude and Christian character shapes our children's worldview. How do
- 50:37Speaker 1: we teach? It's your attitude toward teaching. Believing what you teach.
- 50:44Speaker 1: That's why curriculum matters and you don't want the curriculum
- 50:48Speaker 1: that I use because you don't believe it. And expecting excellence.
- 50:56Speaker 1: This is how we do it. This is how we
- 50:59Speaker 1: do it. Why do we do it? Because it's biblical.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Because we understand our role as parents. because we want
- 51:08Speaker 1: to advance the kingdom of God and bless the kingdom
- 51:09Speaker 1: of man. How do we do it? We do it
- 51:13Speaker 1: in a way that shapes our children's worldview and bends
- 51:18Speaker 1: it toward Christ in every aspect of what we do,
- 51:25Speaker 1: of what we teach, when we teach, and how we teach.
- 51:31Speaker 1: All of these things are important. This is not just
- 51:35Speaker 1: about what works for this semester. If that's your attitude,
- 51:40Speaker 1: you missed it from the get-go. You don't just do
- 51:43Speaker 1: this in hopes that it might work. You do this
- 51:49Speaker 1: because it's right. You do this because of your commitment
- 51:53Speaker 1: to make an investment in discipling your children over the
- 51:56Speaker 1: long haul. If you do not have that attitude, you
- 52:00Speaker 1: will quit. This will test you in so many ways.
- 52:05Speaker 1: This will test you. Number one, if you're just now
- 52:09Speaker 1: getting ready to homeschool and your children are coming from
- 52:10Speaker 1: another school, especially if it's government school, here's what I
- 52:13Speaker 1: need you to know. Your children are not as smart
- 52:15Speaker 1: as you think they are. That's the first thing that
- 52:19Speaker 1: you're going to run into because you think your kids
- 52:21Speaker 1: are smart because all kids are making good grades in school.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Kids who are not making A's and B's in school
- 52:26Speaker 1: are the ones who don't show up, don't try, they're problems,
- 52:29Speaker 1: and they have attitudes. Everybody else, not everybody, everybody else,
- 52:33Speaker 1: making A's and B's, everybody, okay? The honor roll is
- 52:36Speaker 1: for everybody, all right? You bring your kids home, you
- 52:41Speaker 1: realize they're not as smart as you think they are.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Here's the second thing. You realize they're more sinful than
- 52:46Speaker 1: you thought they were. There's stuff you don't see. They
- 52:50Speaker 1: get the good conduct report and all that sort of
- 52:52Speaker 1: stuff because it is much easier to be respectful for
- 52:56Speaker 1: those people out there than it is for you. You
- 52:59Speaker 1: bring your kids home and you're going to uncover things
- 53:02Speaker 1: that you had not seen and that you did not
- 53:04Speaker 1: know were there. Thirdly, you're going to learn that you
- 53:07Speaker 1: are not as patient as you thought you were. And
- 53:16Speaker 1: that you're much more sinful than you thought you were. Amen, somebody.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Home education will do that to you. You can't homeschool
- 53:28Speaker 1: effectively until you have a little revival. Okay? Okay? But
- 53:36Speaker 1: watch this. If I'm just sort of trying this out
- 53:40Speaker 1: for a semester, my kids come home, they're not as
- 53:43Speaker 1: smart as I thought they were. They're more sinful than
- 53:45Speaker 1: I thought they were. I'm not as patient as I
- 53:47Speaker 1: thought I was, and I'm more sinful than I thought
- 53:49Speaker 1: I was. Guess what I'm going to learn in that
- 53:52Speaker 1: first semester? It was a lot easier when they weren't home.
- 53:57Speaker 1: If that's what you're doing, just quit now. You either
- 54:02Speaker 1: believe in this or you don't. If you believe in this,
- 54:06Speaker 1: you've got to be in it for the long haul.
- 54:09Speaker 1: And you've got to be in it because it's right.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Here's the other thing. If you're just in this because
- 54:14Speaker 1: you heard that it makes kids more well-behaved and get
- 54:18Speaker 1: better grades, then here's what I'm going to ask you.
- 54:21Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you to go check yourself. Because
- 54:25Speaker 1: if that's your goal in raising your children, you've missed
- 54:28Speaker 1: the mark. If your only goal is to wash the
- 54:33Speaker 1: outside of the cup, If your only goal is to
- 54:38Speaker 1: see a certain level of performance, you missed it. That's
- 54:42Speaker 1: not why we do what we do. God sent our
- 54:48Speaker 1: children to us. He has entrusted us with them. And
- 54:54Speaker 1: we have the privilege, the authority, and the opportunity to
- 55:00Speaker 1: invest everything we can into their lives. That's why we
- 55:07Speaker 1: do what we do. Some of them may end up
- 55:10Speaker 1: being rocket scientists. Others of them may end up being
- 55:15Speaker 1: yard men. But praise God that all of them will
- 55:21Speaker 1: be well, thoroughly discipled. That's our goal. Let's pray. Father,
- 55:35Speaker 1: Thank you for the incredible privilege that you've given us
- 55:38Speaker 1: of just being parents. And then on top of that,
- 55:44Speaker 1: you've given us a place where we have freedom and
- 55:47Speaker 1: the opportunity to invest in the education and discipleship of
- 55:52Speaker 1: our children. This is an overwhelming concept. And we cannot
- 56:05Speaker 1: accomplish this in and of ourselves. Therefore, we ask that
- 56:10Speaker 1: you would grant by your grace that we might serve
- 56:14Speaker 1: our children well with a view toward them coming to
- 56:20Speaker 1: know you in repentance and faith and serving you well
- 56:23Speaker 1: in turn. Remind us that this is not about test
- 56:28Speaker 1: scores and outward behavior. This is about the investment of
- 56:35Speaker 1: our lives and the lives of those whom you have
- 56:39Speaker 1: given us. This is about the advancement of the kingdom
- 56:45Speaker 1: of God. This is about blessing the kingdom of man.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Give us grace. Give us patience. Give us long-suffering. Give
- 57:02Speaker 1: us wisdom. Give us wisdom. Give us everything that we
- 57:07Speaker 1: need to do everything that you ask. That we might
- 57:13Speaker 1: make much of Christ. In whose name we pray. Amen.
