- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a Yukon Football coaches show, like we get together
- 0:03Speaker 1: every Tuesday with Jim Moore and some of the Yukon
- 0:06Speaker 1: football players on Mike Crispino Husky's Coming Off an overtime
- 0:11Speaker 1: thriller at Delaware. They came up on the short end
- 0:14Speaker 1: of it, a back to back weeks coach overtime. That
- 0:17Speaker 1: does not happen very often. In fact, Yukon had not
- 0:21Speaker 1: played overtime since twenty twelve, when they played two overtime
- 0:25Speaker 1: games in the same season they lost to Temple and
- 0:28Speaker 1: won against Louisville and two overtimes. So the kind of
- 0:33Speaker 1: emotion involved in that extra session, the overtime. Obviously, when
- 0:37Speaker 1: Delaware was able to win the game, they went crazy.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean they ran up in the stands, the crowd
- 0:43Speaker 1: came on the field. It's an emotional thing playing overtime football,
- 0:48Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Because it's a one play proposition sometimes, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: and it can end so quickly, either for in a
- 0:59Speaker 2: positive manner or you know, unfortunately for us the last
- 1:01Speaker 2: couple of weeks in a really disappointing manner.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And you had two chants at least a couple to
- 1:07Speaker 1: put the thing away in regulation, with the ball needing
- 1:11Speaker 1: one yard in their territory, you had a decision to make.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm always second guessing everything, and I'm up there in
- 1:18Speaker 1: the booth and I'm saying, we're going for this, We're
- 1:21Speaker 1: going to end the game right here, And that's what
- 1:23Speaker 1: you tried to do. It just didn't happen. You came
- 1:25Speaker 1: up a yard short. Any second thoughts on that when
- 1:29Speaker 1: you look back at that.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You know, typically I would second guess everything that one.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I don't second guess. I think you know, even though
- 1:36Speaker 2: it didn't work out, it was a no brainer decision.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I think anyone would tell you that. So I haven't
- 1:42Speaker 2: second guessed the decision. I have second guessed everything that
- 1:47Speaker 2: goes into the decision or around the decision, like did
- 1:49Speaker 2: we call the right play on third down? Did we
- 1:53Speaker 2: teach our guys the details necessary to execute on fourth down?
- 1:58Speaker 2: You know, all of those things you second guess. The
- 2:01Speaker 2: decision I think was pretty clear. If we get the
- 2:03Speaker 2: first down, the game's over. If we kick a field
- 2:06Speaker 2: goal when we go up six, a touchdown beats us.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know, we had not played up to our standard
- 2:13Speaker 2: on defense for that day. So you know, everybody the analytics,
- 2:17Speaker 2: as people like to say, we're one hundred percent go
- 2:20Speaker 2: for it. As a matter of fact, it was interesting,
- 2:22Speaker 2: Mike Is in that situation, the analytics said, go up,
- 2:25Speaker 2: go for it up to fourth and seven. Now, I
- 2:27Speaker 2: don't know that I'd have gone for fourth and seven,
- 2:31Speaker 2: but the fourth and one was a no brainer. So
- 2:33Speaker 2: we as a staff and as a as a team
- 2:37Speaker 2: have to do a better job in that situation of executing.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And you know, it's easy to say, it's hard to do.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We have to, like I've always said, you to tear
- 2:45Speaker 2: it apart and you find out why, and you you know,
- 2:48Speaker 2: you learn from it, and then you put those lessons
- 2:50Speaker 2: into action, you get better from it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and then in the overtime, you may you had
- 2:54Speaker 1: the pass play to Lewis Hansen down the right sideline,
- 2:58Speaker 1: he gets to the two. You guys are inside the five,
- 3:02Speaker 1: trying to put a score up there to take the
- 3:05Speaker 1: lead in overtime by a touchdown that didn't happen. So
- 3:08Speaker 1: tough yardage inside the five yard line, it seems in
- 3:12Speaker 1: any level of football.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, they stuffed the box and it makes
- 3:16Speaker 2: it tough to run. We still have a lot of
- 3:18Speaker 2: belief in our run game. And that's again, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 2: that's a decision a time when you really evaluate your decisions,
- 3:26Speaker 2: you know, like what did we call, who do we
- 3:28Speaker 2: give the ball to, who do we try to get
- 3:29Speaker 2: the ball to? What was our strategy? You'd love to
- 3:32Speaker 2: look back on those situations after a win. It becomes
- 3:37Speaker 2: pretty excruciatingly painful when it's after loss. But unless you're
- 3:40Speaker 2: dead honest with yourself and you take responsibility and you
- 3:44Speaker 2: resolve to you know, putting into action that the lessons
- 3:48Speaker 2: you've learned, and it's just going to keep repeating itself.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So we have a really you know, Mike, I mean
- 3:53Speaker 2: you know too, Bob. We have a great group of
- 3:54Speaker 2: people around here that take things very seriously. You know,
- 3:57Speaker 2: we don't shrug anything off, We don't take anything for granted,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and we're going to you know, we're very very close,
- 4:02Speaker 2: very very close, but close doesn't mean anything in this
- 4:04Speaker 2: business until you get it done. So but I'm encouraged, Listen,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I'm disappointed. I'm not discouraged, and I found some encouragement
- 4:14Speaker 2: today in the way that our players bounce back.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that's certainly a key. You had to play the
- 4:19Speaker 1: game almost entirely without Mel Brown. He got hurt early,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and I know in your press conference earlier today you
- 4:25Speaker 1: were talking about it. What's your prognosis. Could he play
- 4:28Speaker 1: football again this year?
- 4:30Speaker 2: He could, but it'll be late in the year. I'm
- 4:32Speaker 2: not saying it's just like Keelan Marian a few years ago.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's similar. You know, Keiland got hurt in that first
- 4:38Speaker 2: game up at Utah State. He made it back for
- 4:40Speaker 2: the last game in the bowl game. You know, we're
- 4:42Speaker 2: not going to put any limitations on Mel's ability to
- 4:44Speaker 2: get back quickly, and we're not going to put any
- 4:46Speaker 2: expectations on you know, when he'll be back. We have
- 4:49Speaker 2: a tremendous medical staff. We have great doctors. Our athletic
- 4:53Speaker 2: trainers are outstanding. Mel's a hard worker, so he will
- 4:57Speaker 2: work hard and they will work hard to get him
- 4:59Speaker 2: back and we'll just see where it goes. And until
- 5:01Speaker 2: that point in time, you know, we expect him to
- 5:03Speaker 2: contribute in different ways, and he'll be in the meetings
- 5:06Speaker 2: and he will lend his maturity and is an energy
- 5:10Speaker 2: and experience to our team. And we have guys that
- 5:13Speaker 2: will step in and do the best they can to
- 5:15Speaker 2: fill the void that he's left us.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Now Jim Morris with us on the Yukon Football Coaching Show.
- 5:20Speaker 1: One thing you've done in your time here at Go
- 5:23Speaker 1: you've developed a deeper roster, a talent, a more talented roster.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I think that's when that really comes into play when
- 5:31Speaker 1: you lose a key guy like this and you had
- 5:34Speaker 1: to play this last game without Ben Smiley up front
- 5:37Speaker 1: on the defensive side of things, and Malachi mcclin's been
- 5:41Speaker 1: out a couple games. That's really what you're trying to do.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You're trying to protect yourself from from getting beat up
- 5:48Speaker 1: by guys who are you lost to injury. That's the
- 5:51Speaker 1: toughest part about football people. It's a collision sport. People
- 5:55Speaker 1: get hurt. I think you put yourself in a pretty
- 5:57Speaker 1: good position in terms of overcoming some of those injury
- 6:01Speaker 1: issues that every team faces.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We've certainly built depth quality depth here. I think that's
- 6:06Speaker 2: a credit to a lot of people, the people that
- 6:09Speaker 2: have contributed their harder money to the NIL efforts and
- 6:14Speaker 2: now revenue share. You know, we've just got a lot
- 6:17Speaker 2: of pretty darn good players around here. But we have
- 6:21Speaker 2: to win games, Mike, you know, and like I said,
- 6:24Speaker 2: we're very close. Close doesn't mean anything. But it's better
- 6:27Speaker 2: than you know, sitting here feeling like, oh my god,
- 6:29Speaker 2: we're a million miles away. We know what has to happen.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Now we have to go put it into action, all right.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We find out more about the Huskies and Yukon football
- 6:40Speaker 1: with Jim Mora. In just a moment, we'll take a
- 6:42Speaker 1: quick break. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on
- 6:45Speaker 1: lear Field.
