- 0:00Speaker 1: My run hack is I always joke like, oh, I
- 0:03Speaker 1: listened to classical music and pretend I'm late for the ball,
- 0:06Speaker 1: But sometimes cinematic music like that you would hear in
- 0:09Speaker 1: a movie. And if you have a really good imagination,
- 0:12Speaker 1: which is good for your brain, so always use your imagination.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Those type of fun things are my favorite hacks.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi here. You are listening to episode
- 0:37Speaker 2: two hundred and ninety seven of Hurdle, a wellness focused

- 1:02Speaker 2: towards your own big potential and of course have some
- 1:05Speaker 2: fun along the way. For today's conversation, I am bringing
- 1:10Speaker 2: in one of the funniest people I know. Her name
- 1:15Speaker 2: is Aaron Azar. She is known to many of you
- 1:19Speaker 2: as I am missus space cadet over on social media.
- 1:23Speaker 2: She's also the host of the podcast non Members Only,
- 1:27Speaker 2: which you can find wherever you get this podcast, we
- 1:31Speaker 2: are chatting all about how to show up when you
- 1:33Speaker 2: don't want to.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We've all been there, the.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Days that you just don't feel like getting up and out,
- 1:39Speaker 2: and so our conversation is circulating around what to do
- 1:44Speaker 2: in these not so ideal circumstances, how to ensure that
- 1:49Speaker 2: you get moving and at least give it a whirl,
- 1:52Speaker 2: whether it's for five minutes or if that five minutes
- 1:55Speaker 2: turns into something much longer. Aaron shares her tips for
- 2:00Speaker 2: teaming up with an accountability partner. We talk about the
- 2:03Speaker 2: benefit of listening to either a podcast or a music
- 2:07Speaker 2: while you're on the move, plus how choosing certain clothing
- 2:11Speaker 2: or shoes or gear in general can actually.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Make all of the difference.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Aaron and I reconnected over our mutual love for the
- 2:22Speaker 2: new Rebox Float Zig. It's a new sneaker out from
- 2:26Speaker 2: Rebok that's built for runners, whether you're new or a
- 2:29Speaker 2: season professional. It offers really great energy return with their
- 2:33Speaker 2: float right energy foam, and it's got what they're calling
- 2:36Speaker 2: their Zig technology in the mid soul shape. I really
- 2:40Speaker 2: love this shoe. I've been running in it myself. It's
- 2:43Speaker 2: light weight and it's springing and really it's just designed
- 2:46Speaker 2: to make running more fun. You know me, I like
- 2:49Speaker 2: to do you a solid whenever I can. So I
- 2:52Speaker 2: talk to the folks at Reebok and they are hooking
- 2:54Speaker 2: it up. Rebok is offering hurdle listeners a really exclusive discount.
- 3:01Speaker 2: No one else has this discount. The first fifty people
- 3:03Speaker 2: to use the code hurdle too five, we'll receive twenty
- 3:07Speaker 2: five percent off the new float Zig running shoes. Again,
- 3:11Speaker 2: that code over at reebok dot com is Hurdle two five.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's capped at fifty redemption. So get on it and
- 3:20Speaker 2: trust me, you won't regret it. With that, let's get
- 3:24Speaker 2: to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Today.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I am catching up with the ever lovely Aaron Azar.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You know and love her as one of your favorite
- 3:41Speaker 2: individuals to watch all things running from on social media.
- 3:45Speaker 2: She's also the host of the non members only podcast
- 3:47Speaker 2: how are we doing?
- 3:48Speaker 3: Aaron? I'm doing great. It's good to be back.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It's good to have you back a little too long
- 3:55Speaker 2: for my liking for you to come on Hurdle same.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I know, I know, but we're here and I'm excited.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I'm excited too.
- 4:02Speaker 2: We're catching up today because you and I recently connected
- 4:05Speaker 2: over the fact that we're both chipping in for an
- 4:07Speaker 2: upcoming Rebok campaign celebrating their new float Zig sneaker, and
- 4:12Speaker 2: the campaign is circling around the idea of running hacks,
- 4:17Speaker 2: things that you do to get yourself up and moving
- 4:20Speaker 2: when you don't necessarily want to, which I thought would
- 4:24Speaker 2: be a good topic for us to jam about on
- 4:26Speaker 2: the pod.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I absolutely agree.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I feel like it's one of those things that I
- 4:31Speaker 1: get asked all the time because I'm obviously nowhere near
- 4:36Speaker 1: a professional runner, so the people that are usually the
- 4:39Speaker 1: people that are coming to view my content are also
- 4:42Speaker 1: not professional runners and maybe just starting out, and that's
- 4:45Speaker 1: one of the things that everyone asks, is like what
- 4:48Speaker 1: I just feel like I can't or I'm so busy,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and like how do you get out the door?
- 4:54Speaker 3: So it's something I answer all the time, I feel
- 4:57Speaker 3: like all.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The time, which is why an episode like this where
- 5:01Speaker 2: you can just shoot them a link is actually idyllic.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'm here to help you, just like I'm here to
- 5:06Speaker 2: help the people that are also in my dms, and
- 5:09Speaker 2: I feel like it's appropriate to say that Although this
- 5:12Speaker 2: conversation will circle around the concept of running. A lot
- 5:16Speaker 2: of the takeaways, a lot of the tips that I'm
- 5:17Speaker 2: sure are gonna come to fruition over the next forty
- 5:21Speaker 2: five minutes or so, are really going to be applicable
- 5:24Speaker 2: for anything, whether it's going out for a run or
- 5:26Speaker 2: going to the gym, or maybe even just starting a
- 5:29Speaker 2: project that you've been putting off and making the monster
- 5:31Speaker 2: for no apparent reason. So many things and tips when
- 5:35Speaker 2: it comes to getting something done really span across the board.
- 5:39Speaker 3: That's so true.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I do find that, Like I'll think of something
- 5:44Speaker 1: as it applies to running, and then I'm like, actually
- 5:46Speaker 1: this other thing that I'm like terrified to do, or
- 5:49Speaker 1: that really easy thing like getting my license renewed that
- 5:53Speaker 1: takes five minutes but I put off for months. Yeah,
- 5:56Speaker 1: So I tend to apply that. That's such a good
- 5:59Speaker 1: point to other things my life.
- 6:01Speaker 2: As the ever lovely coach Bennett says, this is about running,
- 6:04Speaker 2: This is not about running. It has nothing to do
- 6:06Speaker 2: with running and everything to do with life. The first
- 6:09Speaker 2: place that I want to start us off here is
- 6:12Speaker 2: talking about what your relationship is with movement right now
- 6:15Speaker 2: when you have to think about how many days you
- 6:18Speaker 2: actually really look forward to getting up, getting out, hitting
- 6:23Speaker 2: your run.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Where do we sit?
- 6:25Speaker 1: I would say that this past year because I started out,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I did three marathons in three years, and that was
- 6:34Speaker 1: like from nothing, you know, so starting from zero.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I don't know why I did that, but I did.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And this past year I totally took off no marathon,
- 6:46Speaker 1: not even half marathon, and kind of just enjoyed, like
- 6:50Speaker 1: popping into fun five k's really leaned into being a
- 6:54Speaker 1: hype woman for all types of sports and people, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: I really got to experiment and pay attention to how
- 7:04Speaker 1: I felt about running when it didn't involve me following
- 7:08Speaker 1: a plan, and there were some pluses and minuses to that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: The minuses really involved no structure, and I learned that
- 7:18Speaker 1: I need structure. The pluses though whereas there was no
- 7:23Speaker 1: guilt or like this push pull should I go out?
- 7:27Speaker 3: Should I?
- 7:27Speaker 1: I don't feel like it, but you have to kind
- 7:29Speaker 1: of thing, So I did have a lot of that freedom.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I just feel like I could use some structure.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So I did, very very recently as of this week,
- 7:40Speaker 1: start to just follow like a very low key, very
- 7:45Speaker 1: doable kind of training plan just to like build back
- 7:48Speaker 1: up some miles. And I know that I also don't
- 7:52Speaker 1: do well when it's too much, because I'm the type
- 7:56Speaker 1: of person like all or nothing, and if it's a
- 7:58Speaker 1: little too much, I'm like, okay, nothing, you.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Know, so I totally know. Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I feel like at this point, I would say once
- 8:07Speaker 1: a week I'm like, oh, I'm so excited to run.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I can't wait to see what I can do today.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And a lot of what I'm doing lately is that, like,
- 8:15Speaker 1: let's just go out and see what happens.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, super magical. And I think that I can relate
- 8:22Speaker 2: to you. It's like I know that I enjoy the
- 8:25Speaker 2: act of running, and also taking a break from running
- 8:29Speaker 2: at times has really served me.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I also really feel you on the I need.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Some sort of structure or instructions on what I should do.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I too, just talk to a coach yesterday, have a
- 8:44Speaker 2: plan that's going to start next week. I'm training for
- 8:47Speaker 2: a ten k, which is nice and different from a marathon,
- 8:51Speaker 2: and it brings spice and excitement back into a sport
- 8:55Speaker 2: that I know I like to do, and that's really nice.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So when it comes to the days where you're not
- 9:02Speaker 2: necessarily feeling like getting up and out, how do you
- 9:05Speaker 2: differentiate from okay, I'm going to push through this all
- 9:09Speaker 2: feeling to the maybe this is one of those kind
- 9:12Speaker 2: of days that I need to have some grace.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I can really tell at this point.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It's almost like I can kind of fast forward into
- 9:21Speaker 1: the future and know how I will feel after the run.
- 9:25Speaker 1: If it's a very mental thing, those are the days
- 9:28Speaker 1: I need to run the most, and I happen to
- 9:32Speaker 1: have really great runs when I do push through those
- 9:35Speaker 1: things when it's physical almost all of the time where
- 9:41Speaker 1: it's like a if I have like a fever even
- 9:43Speaker 1: low grade or something like that, I will not go.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And if I feel like I'm on the edge of
- 9:51Speaker 1: an injury, I absolutely will. I'm not one of those
- 9:53Speaker 1: people that's like, no, I have to get out there.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I'm like, nah, I'll do like I'll do a little
- 9:59Speaker 1: light workout and I just like, you know, get my
- 10:02Speaker 1: blood pumping. Maybe just do like an arm workout for
- 10:06Speaker 1: five minutes.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So I feel like at this point in time, I'm
- 10:11Speaker 1: very good at like predicting that, But I think when
- 10:15Speaker 1: I first started, I wasn't, and I used to push
- 10:19Speaker 1: myself through and not feel great afterward.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So what I'm hearing you say is you learn to
- 10:25Speaker 2: really listen your body and how to do that internal audit.
- 10:29Speaker 2: So on the days where it is just a mental
- 10:31Speaker 2: thing and you know that, oh I don't feel like
- 10:33Speaker 2: doing it, but also it's when you need it the most.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Let's start to go through some strategies to get up
- 10:40Speaker 2: and out there. The first thing that I always come
- 10:42Speaker 2: to is this concept of.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Just start right.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I know that within the first ten minutes of a run,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I can go from I really don't feel like doing
- 10:53Speaker 2: this to Okay, it's not so bad, to man, I'm
- 10:56Speaker 2: so happy that I did this.
- 10:57Speaker 3: What about you?
- 10:59Speaker 1: I agree. I don't even go as far to just start.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I sometimes ease into it, and I tell myself that
- 11:08Speaker 1: I even set my watch to walk instead of a run,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and I just tell myself that any running is just overachieving.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And nine times out of ten, I'll just start like
- 11:19Speaker 3: a little jog.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Maybe after those five minutes of walking, and I'm full
- 11:24Speaker 1: out running, you know, and I do a full run
- 11:28Speaker 1: and that feels great. And you know, there are those
- 11:31Speaker 1: days where yeah, I just walk ten minutes, I'm going home,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you know.
- 11:35Speaker 3: So it's like, you know, set the bar low.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yes, set the bar low, so that you're already exceeding
- 11:43Speaker 2: your expectations. How can we make the process of starting easier.
- 11:49Speaker 2: What are some things that remove decision fatigue or lower
- 11:53Speaker 2: that barrier to entry that have worked for you.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Oh, that's a big thing with me, because, like you
- 11:58Speaker 1: mentioned before, how things can apply to your everyday life.
- 12:02Speaker 3: That is one of them.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Removing the friction of any task, even how we organize
- 12:10Speaker 1: our mail at home, like there could be no friction.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Because otherwise stuff will pile up.
- 12:14Speaker 1: So for running, the socks that I wear for running,
- 12:18Speaker 1: the sports spras that I wear for running, shorts, and
- 12:21Speaker 1: everything that's specific to that in one spot, so I'm
- 12:25Speaker 1: not like digging through all of my drawers and my clothes.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Same with my shoes, like right now, I mean, granted
- 12:33Speaker 1: we are promoting the floatsig, but the floatsig one is like,
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'm sorry, that's all I'm wearing. And then I have
- 12:39Speaker 1: the sneakers with my running clothes because if I if
- 12:44Speaker 1: I need to look for one thing, I'm not going.
- 12:48Speaker 1: I'm just that type of person. And same with my headphones,
- 12:52Speaker 1: like they have to be hanging on the same hook
- 12:55Speaker 1: because if I can't find my headphones, I also am
- 12:57Speaker 1: not going.
- 12:58Speaker 2: But it's so valuable that you learn this about yourself, right,
- 13:01Speaker 2: It's removing that barrier to entry. And something that I
- 13:06Speaker 2: found really helpful was making the time, if it's by monthly,
- 13:10Speaker 2: once a quarter, once every six months, whatever it is,
- 13:13Speaker 2: to go through the drawers where I keep these things,
- 13:16Speaker 2: to make sure what I have in those drawers is
- 13:19Speaker 2: stuff that I want to use. Sometimes I'll like take
- 13:22Speaker 2: out our sports bra and it's like not the right
- 13:24Speaker 2: sports braw or take a pair of leggings and I'm like, oh,
- 13:27Speaker 2: I don't really want to wear these pair of leggings.
- 13:29Speaker 2: But if I know that I can open a drawer
- 13:31Speaker 2: and no matter what I reach for is going to
- 13:33Speaker 2: be something that I'm like, oh, I'm done with this,
- 13:35Speaker 2: then it makes it one less thing that I have
- 13:37Speaker 2: to overthink about before I get out the door.
- 13:39Speaker 1: That's such a good tip because I've I've fallen into
- 13:43Speaker 1: that trap many times as well. I love that idea,
- 13:46Speaker 1: just like having a regular increment of going through that
- 13:50Speaker 1: and the other thing. This isn't really friction. This is
- 13:53Speaker 1: more like of a mental preparation for me. But like
- 13:56Speaker 1: if it's bad weather, I mean I don't want I'm
- 13:59Speaker 1: not talking about like dangerous, you know, like lightning and stuff.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I'm not going to run in that. But if it's
- 14:03Speaker 3: like really.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Cold and wind really angers me, I will make sure,
- 14:09Speaker 1: Like if I have a run the next day, I'll
- 14:12Speaker 1: look at the weather what it's gonna be and just
- 14:14Speaker 1: mentally prepare for the suck. It's gonna be windy, just
- 14:18Speaker 1: prepare for it. Just get over it. You're gonna run
- 14:21Speaker 1: in the wind and you're gonna be angry, but it's fine,
- 14:24Speaker 1: you know.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I don't want to be caught off guard.
- 14:28Speaker 2: The mental prep can meet such a big deal, though,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and especially your idea of visualizing what you're about to
- 14:36Speaker 2: get into. That visualization and even those experiences of those
- 14:40Speaker 2: at the moment less than stellar runs have really.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Paid off for me in the long haul.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I think about the Boston Marathon that I ran in
- 14:48Speaker 2: twenty eighteen, when it was pouring the whole time, and
- 14:51Speaker 2: I had one epic training run that was in the
- 14:55Speaker 2: rain that wasn't nearly as bad as the day of
- 14:58Speaker 2: the marathon weather. But knowing that I was able to
- 15:01Speaker 2: execute in the rain before was the thing I kept
- 15:05Speaker 2: reminding myself of on the day of the event, when
- 15:08Speaker 2: I was in the thick of the sock and I
- 15:10Speaker 2: knew I said, you did this before, you can do
- 15:12Speaker 2: it again. Yes, that's so that's like gold when it
- 15:17Speaker 2: comes to mindset on race day. Absolutely just having that
- 15:21Speaker 2: little nugget, you know, like, oh, I pushed through this before.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Like I always talk about having a bad run bag,
- 15:29Speaker 2: and so it's like, if I have a bad run,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I'm not gonna dwell on it, but I am going
- 15:33Speaker 2: to put it in that bad run bag because I'll
- 15:35Speaker 2: probably have to pull it out in the future and
- 15:37Speaker 2: reflect on it and be like, you did that before,
- 15:40Speaker 2: You're fine.
- 15:41Speaker 3: You know. Wow, we love the bad run, right.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I picture mine like very bedazzled, maybe with like a
- 15:49Speaker 1: lightning bolt on it, and yeah it can.
- 15:51Speaker 3: It can be as fancy as you want. It's the
- 15:54Speaker 3: thing that helps you get through when things get hard.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I absolutely love that.
- 15:57Speaker 2: So we've talked about removing the barriers entry and getting
- 16:01Speaker 2: rid of things that could result in decision fatigue. On
- 16:04Speaker 2: the note of decision fatigue, we have the gear piece
- 16:08Speaker 2: of the equation, but let's talk about the actual running
- 16:11Speaker 2: piece of the equation. You talked about thriving when you
- 16:13Speaker 2: have some sort of a schedule. Is that what you'd
- 16:16Speaker 2: recommend to someone else who's having problems getting excited about
- 16:19Speaker 2: their running routine.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I think.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I mean, it really depends on where you're at with
- 16:24Speaker 1: your running, but I guess it depends on your personality
- 16:26Speaker 1: type because some people might not like structure. But in
- 16:30Speaker 1: my opinion, yeah, that's something I would suggest. And also
- 16:34Speaker 1: just like having that I don't know, freedom or almost
- 16:39Speaker 1: like excitement in terms of experimenting to be like, I
- 16:44Speaker 1: am gonna have no expectations about this and let's just
- 16:47Speaker 1: see what happens if I try to, you know, commit
- 16:51Speaker 1: to this run that happens to be in my plan.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Or maybe you're just like, let's see what happens if
- 16:57Speaker 1: I just go out and I start running and see
- 17:00Speaker 1: where I get tired. Like there's little Lately, I've been
- 17:03Speaker 1: finding the best runs are when I don't put like
- 17:07Speaker 1: a good or bad to it. I just am like, oh,
- 17:09Speaker 1: that's interesting. You know, it's like you're a scientist. You're
- 17:12Speaker 1: making little observations.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you're taking it as information instead of judging yourself
- 17:19Speaker 2: based on how something plays out, which is an opportunity
- 17:23Speaker 2: for all of us. At the end of the day,
- 17:26Speaker 2: ninety nine percent of the people listening to this podcast
- 17:29Speaker 2: aren't professional athletes, So if you remember that when you're
- 17:33Speaker 2: stepping out, Okay, maybe ninety eight percent, I'd say two
- 17:36Speaker 2: percent of the people that listen to this show might
- 17:37Speaker 2: be professional athletes, but the other ninety eight percent we
- 17:40Speaker 2: aren't trying to necessarily do anything extraordinary, although the camp
- 17:45Speaker 2: could come in that says that running in itself is
- 17:47Speaker 2: pretty special. But knowing that you can then set your
- 17:51Speaker 2: expectations in a place that is praising you for prioritizing
- 17:55Speaker 2: the fact that you're getting up to move.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Your body at all.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and if nothing else works, just focus on the
- 18:01Speaker 1: good feeling that you get after a run.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Just chase that, like it.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Sometimes that's enough to just like push through all of
- 18:08Speaker 1: Like I mean, for me, the first mile is horrible,
- 18:11Speaker 1: you know, and just getting out the door can be horrible.
- 18:14Speaker 1: But knowing how I'm gonna feel afterward, like I'm probably
- 18:16Speaker 1: gonna be less stressed out, I'll probably have those good
- 18:20Speaker 1: brain chemicals whatever they are, and doorphins you know, flowing,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I'm probably gonna make like a healthy choice in terms
- 18:27Speaker 1: of hydration and refueling. And it just like snowballs into
- 18:32Speaker 1: all this positivity so something like just knowing that is
- 18:36Speaker 1: enough to like push me out.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I was literally having a conversation yesterday about how a
- 18:41Speaker 2: disruption and routine altogether can impact you in so many
- 18:44Speaker 2: different aspects of your life. So if you make the
- 18:47Speaker 2: good decision first thing in the morning, maybe that you're
- 18:50Speaker 2: gonna brush your teeth, and then that follows into another
- 18:53Speaker 2: good decision that's I'm gonna put on sunscreen, then it's like, Okay,
- 18:56Speaker 2: now that I've done these two good things for myself,
- 18:58Speaker 2: I'm also going to do the journaling that i want
- 19:00Speaker 2: to do. And then I'm like, okay, it's time to
- 19:02Speaker 2: move my body. And each of these small decisions really
- 19:05Speaker 2: have a down no effect into good for you habits, right,
- 19:09Speaker 2: and they set the tone for you to continue on
- 19:13Speaker 2: to foster these habits as the day, the week, the month,
- 19:16Speaker 2: the year goes on. Now, I think it's important to
- 19:19Speaker 2: note that just because sometimes you may fall by the
- 19:22Speaker 2: wayside with one habit doesn't mean you need to wait
- 19:25Speaker 2: for some like arbitrary day moment time to begin again.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Any second is an opportunity to begin again, but you
- 19:34Speaker 2: have to be the person that comes to that situation
- 19:37Speaker 2: with grace and understanding and compassion for yourself.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like it goes back into that like January
- 19:43Speaker 1: first mentality, and like so many people quote unquote fall
- 19:48Speaker 1: off the bandwagon. I hate even saying that term because
- 19:52Speaker 1: it's like just saying that puts you in the mindset
- 19:55Speaker 1: of like, well, it's done, you know, but oh, January
- 19:59Speaker 1: first coming up, like winter technically, is when we're all
- 20:03Speaker 1: supposed to be kind of laying low almost like hibernating
- 20:07Speaker 1: and just being cozy and you know, not coming into
- 20:12Speaker 1: these like big epiphanies and starting these life changes.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I guess, yeah, totally.
- 20:19Speaker 2: So again, having that grace with yourself if you quote
- 20:22Speaker 2: unquote fallen off the bandwagon, a term that we don't
- 20:25Speaker 2: love to use here, but knowing that any day, any moment,
- 20:29Speaker 2: any second is your opportunity to be like, you know what,
- 20:31Speaker 2: I'm going to start over right now.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And that's cool.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Everyone goes through this stuff, whether you're the everyday runner
- 20:37Speaker 2: like you and me, or you are some sort of
- 20:40Speaker 2: astronomically gifted human being. Taking a break from today's episode
- 20:48Speaker 2: to talk to you about my sponsor at Elements Now.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Healthy hydration isn't just about drinking water. It's about water
- 20:55Speaker 2: and electrolytes. Say it with me, water and electrolytes. It
- 20:59Speaker 2: makes hens right. You lose both water and sodium when
- 21:02Speaker 2: you sweat period. Both need to be replaced to prevent
- 21:06Speaker 2: muscle crams, headaches, and energy dips. But most people only
- 21:10Speaker 2: replace the water. And that's because since the nineteen forties,
- 21:14Speaker 2: we've been told to drink eight glasses of water per day,
- 21:17Speaker 2: whether you're thirsty or not. Well, drinking meonthirst is a
- 21:21Speaker 2: bad idea. It dilutes blood electrolyte levels, especially sodium levels,
- 21:25Speaker 2: which leads to headaches, low energy, confusion, cramps, or even worse.
- 21:31Speaker 2: So the solution isn't to stop drinking water, it's to
- 21:34Speaker 2: drink water plus electrolytes, which is where element comes in.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Element has enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium to get you
- 21:43Speaker 2: feeling and performing your best. Plus it has zero sugar,
- 21:47Speaker 2: artificial colors, or other dodgy ingredients to hold you back.
- 21:51Speaker 2: You're also guaranteed to find an element flavor you love.
- 21:55Speaker 2: My favorite is the citrus salt and the watermelon salt,
- 21:58Speaker 2: but they've also got ras or you can get spicy
- 22:01Speaker 2: with a mango chili. So many different tastes to suit.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Every style element came up with a fantastic offer for
- 22:10Speaker 2: hurdle listeners. Head on over to drink lmnt dot com
- 22:14Speaker 2: slash hurdle to get a free sample.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Pack with any purchase.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Again, that's drink lmnt dot com slash hurdle to get
- 22:22Speaker 2: a free sample pack of all of the flavors with
- 22:25Speaker 2: your purchase today. Now, when it comes to other tips
- 22:38Speaker 2: to get up and out to start your running.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Let's talk a little bit about finding a friend.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I think that finding a friend, whether it is a
- 22:48Speaker 2: community in person or online or just one friend or
- 22:52Speaker 2: one digital friend, can make all the difference between you
- 22:56Speaker 2: getting up and having an accountability partner and you being like, em, I'm.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Just doing this alone. Oh that's so true.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I actually started yoga a while ago, and if my
- 23:07Speaker 1: sister says she's gonna go, I will never miss it
- 23:11Speaker 1: because it's like the only time we see each other.
- 23:13Speaker 1: So that's such a good point that having someone like
- 23:16Speaker 1: an accountability buddy will get you out when you don't
- 23:19Speaker 1: feel like it.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Now, you live in Brooklyn, right, I do.
- 23:23Speaker 1: So there's people everywhere and there's probably tons of like
- 23:27Speaker 1: run clubs, and you probably have friends down the street.
- 23:31Speaker 3: My friends are the cows and the trees.
- 23:34Speaker 1: So for me, it's very virtual is I would say
- 23:40Speaker 1: my community. That being said, though, I feel like whether
- 23:44Speaker 1: it's in person or virtual, you might not get the
- 23:48Speaker 1: same like instant accountability as like an in person buddy.
- 23:53Speaker 1: But I feel like in terms of not feeling isolated
- 23:57Speaker 1: and on your own with things virtual like fantastic.
- 24:01Speaker 3: It's gotten me through this part up to this point.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, And like knowing that there are certain people
- 24:09Speaker 2: that are gonna see whether you showed up or not,
- 24:12Speaker 2: whether it be if you share your workout on Instagram
- 24:15Speaker 2: or if you're using something like Strava. I think subconsciously
- 24:18Speaker 2: all the time, like, oh, this run.
- 24:20Speaker 3: When I go out and do it, it's gonna be
- 24:22Speaker 3: in the world.
- 24:22Speaker 2: People are gonna know that I ran because it's on Strava,
- 24:25Speaker 2: and then I'll be accountable to that. Right if I
- 24:28Speaker 2: don't show up for a week or so, I know
- 24:30Speaker 2: that there are gonna be people like thinking to themselves, what's.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Going on with Emily.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yeah she hurt herself, okay, which is also very comforting
- 24:38Speaker 2: as a single woman to be honest.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you're gonna be checked on. You know, people are
- 24:44Speaker 3: checking on me if I'm not showing up on Strava.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I love what you said though about the yoga example
- 24:48Speaker 2: with your sister. For me, for sure, I know that
- 24:52Speaker 2: I am much more likely to get up and out
- 24:54Speaker 2: if I'm meeting someone if I wasn't really feeling like
- 24:57Speaker 2: it and a girlfriend hits me and says, hey is
- 25:00Speaker 2: going to go for a run? It for if you
- 25:01Speaker 2: want to join, Like when I Emily choose to go
- 25:04Speaker 2: on a run at four pm. Normally, certainly not, but
- 25:07Speaker 2: for the social aspect, I could definitely be down.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Yeah, do you find it difficult to find someone that
- 25:14Speaker 1: runs like you?
- 25:16Speaker 3: So that's a really good question.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And I bet this is a question that you get
- 25:19Speaker 2: in your DMS because I get it as well. I
- 25:21Speaker 2: think we are our worst enemy when it comes to
- 25:25Speaker 2: this situation. We build it up in our heads like
- 25:28Speaker 2: I'm not going to be fast enough to run with
- 25:30Speaker 2: this person or XYZ. And the reality is what I
- 25:34Speaker 2: find to work is setting a realistic expectation. I'm going
- 25:38Speaker 2: to be like, Hey, this is what I feel comfortable
- 25:41Speaker 2: running today.
- 25:41Speaker 3: How does that sound to you?
- 25:43Speaker 2: And it's up to them to be honest about how
- 25:45Speaker 2: it sounds to them. I'm not trying to do anything extraordinary.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Ninety nine point nine percent of the time, I'm just
- 25:51Speaker 2: going out there to move my body and feel good
- 25:53Speaker 2: about the fact that I did it. So I am
- 25:55Speaker 2: definitely a person that like does the pre run disclaimer,
- 25:59Speaker 2: what do you do?
- 26:00Speaker 1: I say, like, if someone does ask me to go
- 26:03Speaker 1: for a run, granted it is very very rare occasion. However,
- 26:08Speaker 1: if they do, I say, sure, if you're okay with
- 26:11Speaker 1: like whatever I'm at at that point twelve and a
- 26:14Speaker 1: half minutes per mile around that, I'm totally fine.
- 26:18Speaker 3: If they're like, oh, that's like so slow, it might actually,
- 26:21Speaker 3: you know, like hurt me. So like, you know, no
- 26:26Speaker 3: hard feelings.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And if someone's like, hey, I'm running nine and a
- 26:29Speaker 1: half misses per mile, I'd probably say you find someone else.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I love you, but it's not I won't even be
- 26:37Speaker 1: able to socialize because that's not you know, a comfortable
- 26:40Speaker 1: pace for me right now.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, and like not having yilt about that, like
- 26:44Speaker 2: that justn't me and that your value shifts at all,
- 26:47Speaker 2: It just means that that's not the right pairing for
- 26:49Speaker 2: the day. I'm laughing because this makes me think about
- 26:52Speaker 2: a good friend of mine who asked me if I
- 26:54Speaker 2: wanted to run the New York Marathon with her this
- 26:58Speaker 2: fall quote unquote party and I said, well, like your
- 27:02Speaker 2: pace or mine, because like my party pace is like
- 27:06Speaker 2: a legit party, like all the hugs.
- 27:09Speaker 3: We might do this like hel base.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I don't even know, Like I don't even have a
- 27:12Speaker 2: time to throw at it. I'm literally like not looking
- 27:14Speaker 2: at my watch if you're telling me this is a
- 27:16Speaker 2: party pace marathon. But if your party base is actually
- 27:19Speaker 2: my pr pace, then that's not going to work for me.
- 27:22Speaker 3: No, No, I totally get that. I absolutely yeah. Okay,
- 27:26Speaker 3: So we have accountability buddies. Those are super helpful.
- 27:29Speaker 2: We've talked about eliminating the decision fatigue, and we've talked
- 27:33Speaker 2: about just starting. But something else that can be really
- 27:35Speaker 2: epic when it comes to getting out the door and
- 27:38Speaker 2: beginning your run really has to do with your why.
- 27:42Speaker 3: So let's talk a little bit about.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Knowing your why and how having an understanding for what
- 27:48Speaker 2: it is that motivates you can be such a big
- 27:51Speaker 2: game changer.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Where do you sit with this?
- 27:53Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, you know, I'm like reflecting on this
- 27:57Speaker 1: as you were asking that question, and I realized My
- 28:01Speaker 1: why has changed so much since I started, and I
- 28:05Speaker 1: haven't even been running that long, so that says a lot.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I feel like some people get so stuck on a
- 28:12Speaker 1: why that they feel like they have to attach their
- 28:15Speaker 1: personality to it and that it can never change. For example,
- 28:19Speaker 1: mine started because I had just had my third baby
- 28:22Speaker 1: and I was just feeling like absolute trash mentally and physically.
- 28:26Speaker 3: So my why was just feel better.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Like I didn't know how to do it, but I
- 28:31Speaker 1: just wanted to feel better, and that was my.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Why for quite a while.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And then at this point, my why is like so
- 28:39Speaker 1: specific because I recently learned that cardio in general is
- 28:46Speaker 1: not one of the number one preventors of dementia, and
- 28:52Speaker 1: especially as women, we have increased risk for Alzheimer's, especially
- 28:57Speaker 1: because of menopause. So sometimes when I'm like, oh, I
- 29:00Speaker 1: don't want to, I don't feel like, I'm like, do
- 29:02Speaker 1: you want Alzheimer's like I have? Like I'm like because
- 29:07Speaker 1: and you know what, like seeing my daddy has Parkinson's,
- 29:10Speaker 1: which is another neurological factor that cardio and exercise in
- 29:16Speaker 1: general I think can prevent. So I mean, I'm forty now,
- 29:21Speaker 1: so I feel like I need to be I need
- 29:24Speaker 1: to be looking at prevention of things.
- 29:26Speaker 3: So that's like sometimes you know, that's that's all the
- 29:29Speaker 3: why I need.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I like learn about, you know, the health benefits and
- 29:33Speaker 1: it'll get me out the door. Last year I would
- 29:36Speaker 1: say all mental health. I'm like, I'm stressed, and it
- 29:40Speaker 1: makes me not stressed, and that's my why.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:43Speaker 1: So I think it's a very fluid thing depending on
- 29:46Speaker 1: what you're going through in life. Mine happens to be
- 29:48Speaker 1: a little dark about preventing neurological disorder in my future.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Well, I mean, thanks for sharing that.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I think that when it comes to prevent it's not
- 30:00Speaker 2: something that a lot of people are thinking about first
- 30:03Speaker 2: and foremost. So to hear that this is what's top
- 30:06Speaker 2: of mind for you, it's probably stirring some thoughts in
- 30:09Speaker 2: the people that are listening to this, because you're right,
- 30:12Speaker 2: there is essentially nothing that could happen to us that
- 30:16Speaker 2: isn't lessened by the concept of moving.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Our body if I said that appropriately.
- 30:21Speaker 2: So, basically, we know that cardiovascular activity has a myriad
- 30:25Speaker 2: of benefits and can play an important role in lessening
- 30:30Speaker 2: the percentage of coming down with a number of different
- 30:34Speaker 2: health issues.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Now, for me, my why. I mean, when I started,
- 30:37Speaker 3: my why was simple.
- 30:38Speaker 2: It was I wanted to lose weight, and running was
- 30:41Speaker 2: one of the easiest things for me to try to
- 30:43Speaker 2: start doing to do that. Now running looks entirely different
- 30:47Speaker 2: for me than it did ten twelve years ago, and
- 30:51Speaker 2: my why is rooted, like you in the mental health
- 30:54Speaker 2: side of things. I want to run because not only
- 30:56Speaker 2: do I know that it helps me destress, it's my
- 30:59Speaker 2: opportunity to give back to myself, but I also love
- 31:02Speaker 2: proving to myself day in and day out of what
- 31:04Speaker 2: I'm capable of. Even on the days, especially on the
- 31:06Speaker 2: days where I feel like I'm literally capable of nothing.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I go out for a run and I finish the run,
- 31:11Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, wow, you can do this hard thing,
- 31:15Speaker 2: which means that you can do another hard thing, and
- 31:17Speaker 2: you can show up to the person that maybe at
- 31:19Speaker 2: one point or another assisted in you feeling like you
- 31:22Speaker 2: weren't capable and be like, yes, actually I am, and
- 31:26Speaker 2: I am good enough, and I don't need you to
- 31:28Speaker 2: tell me that.
- 31:29Speaker 3: So that's why I run. I run because of that.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It feels good for me to prove to myself day
- 31:34Speaker 2: in and day out that I can do something that's
- 31:36Speaker 2: pretty hard most of the time.
- 31:38Speaker 1: And when you do get through that run and you're like,
- 31:41Speaker 1: you know, maybe surprised at yourself or whatever that you
- 31:44Speaker 1: accomplished it, do you find that carrying that momentum like
- 31:49Speaker 1: into the next run helps you get out again?
- 31:52Speaker 3: Totally?
- 31:52Speaker 2: This is like that combo about like one habit dominoes
- 31:56Speaker 2: into another good habit, and et cetera, et cetera. It's like,
- 31:59Speaker 2: for me, one run that reminds me that I'm capable.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Then like the next day when I have to show
- 32:04Speaker 2: up and the runs a little different. Maybe it's like
- 32:05Speaker 2: a base run and then an interval run, and I
- 32:09Speaker 2: remember that I can do both.
- 32:10Speaker 3: It's like, wow, I'm multi talented here. I can do
- 32:12Speaker 3: so many things.
- 32:13Speaker 2: And I also think that it's going to this idea
- 32:17Speaker 2: that every run has a purpose, and sometimes the run's
- 32:20Speaker 2: purpose isn't ultimately what you thought it would be. Like
- 32:24Speaker 2: sometimes an interval run, for example, like the purpose of
- 32:27Speaker 2: the run is to work on getting faster, but what
- 32:30Speaker 2: ends up happening is maybe it doesn't go as you'd hoped,
- 32:33Speaker 2: and you emerge from that run and you're like, I
- 32:36Speaker 2: learned that sometimes I need to give myself grace or
- 32:38Speaker 2: I was reminded today that like not everything's going to
- 32:41Speaker 2: go to plan and that's okay, right, So, like it
- 32:43Speaker 2: just takes a big person to be okay with understanding
- 32:48Speaker 2: that the result of a run may not be what
- 32:51Speaker 2: you intended, but that doesn't mean that that result isn't valuable.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Yes, there's so many times speaking of like, you know,
- 32:58Speaker 1: having motivation to get out the door. I've had things
- 33:02Speaker 1: like it might be a personal problem or with like
- 33:06Speaker 1: a person in my life, or maybe a creative roadblock
- 33:09Speaker 1: that I have and I just like, for the life
- 33:12Speaker 1: of me, cannot get through it. And I always come
- 33:15Speaker 1: to the same thing, and it's like, just put your
- 33:17Speaker 1: shoes on, go for a run, and I just space out,
- 33:21Speaker 1: like I don't even try and think about it, but
- 33:23Speaker 1: it always I come to a solution almost every time,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and it's like that's such a like a motivating thing
- 33:30Speaker 1: to push me out the doors, Like all right, I
- 33:32Speaker 1: got this issue, like let's go.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Gid y up, gid y up. Yeah.
- 33:37Speaker 2: I'm curious what were you doing for yourself in moments
- 33:40Speaker 2: like that before you had your third child and you
- 33:43Speaker 2: were lacing up and running. How did you deal with
- 33:47Speaker 2: similar circumstances before this form of activity came into your life.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Oh gosh, unhealthily. Probably, yeah, I think I would try.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I would usually probably talk to my mom or my
- 34:01Speaker 1: sister maybe. But I'm also the type of person that
- 34:04Speaker 1: I internalize a lot and don't want to share it
- 34:09Speaker 1: with other people until I figure it out myself. Obviously
- 34:12Speaker 1: I'm different now because I'll just blast anything on the
- 34:15Speaker 1: Internet and I just don't I just don't care because
- 34:18Speaker 1: I know someone's going to relate to it. So yeah,
- 34:20Speaker 1: I think I didn't have like a healthy coping mechanism,
- 34:24Speaker 1: or I was on that like cycle of oh i'm stressed,
- 34:27Speaker 1: let me have a glass of wine or let me
- 34:29Speaker 1: have a beer. It took me years to realize that
- 34:31Speaker 1: gave me an anxiety. Yeah, so that wasn't healthy. And
- 34:36Speaker 1: I think I like fell into this negative cycle of
- 34:43Speaker 1: giving my whole self to being a mom. And then
- 34:45Speaker 1: you're like, well, I just don't have time because you know,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and you don't have to be a mom, like you
- 34:50Speaker 1: could have pets, you could have a really demanding job.
- 34:53Speaker 1: It's like one of those things that you can be
- 34:55Speaker 1: consumed by and not realize it.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And I think that's like the dangerous spot that I
- 35:01Speaker 3: was in. Yeah, totally.
- 35:03Speaker 2: For the person that hears you say I don't have
- 35:07Speaker 2: enough time, I think it's kind of come up twice
- 35:09Speaker 2: at least. Now, what do you say to that person
- 35:12Speaker 2: when they bop in your DMS? Oh?
- 35:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's hard because I never want to
- 35:18Speaker 1: sound condescending because you know, people don't want to hear, well,
- 35:24Speaker 1: what's something that you can cut.
- 35:26Speaker 3: Out of your day? You know what I mean?
- 35:28Speaker 1: And I'm also not someone that says we all have
- 35:31Speaker 1: the same twenty four hours, because we don't. We have
- 35:35Speaker 1: we all have twenty four hours, but they are absolutely
- 35:37Speaker 1: not the same. So I try and be very delicate
- 35:42Speaker 1: with that subject. For me, it is that it has
- 35:45Speaker 1: absolutely set my watch for a five minute walk. That's like,
- 35:48Speaker 1: if I don't have time, then I'll start to feel
- 35:50Speaker 1: really good.
- 35:51Speaker 3: As I'm running.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, well I'm going to push off you
- 35:54Speaker 1: know that thing that I actually don't need to do
- 35:57Speaker 1: that I told myself I have to do. And yeah,
- 36:00Speaker 1: So I think a lot of it is either get
- 36:03Speaker 1: a little less sleep or take something out that really
- 36:07Speaker 1: doesn't need to be there. But if you can't do
- 36:09Speaker 1: any of those just do something like super small, like
- 36:13Speaker 1: five ten minutes. Yeah, totally start small so that you
- 36:16Speaker 1: can build on it and find the enjoyment in that
- 36:19Speaker 1: small amount of time, and then maybe it'll feel more
- 36:22Speaker 1: accessible to add on from there. I also think it's
- 36:25Speaker 1: so important to understand two things.
- 36:28Speaker 3: One that you're worthy of this time with yourself.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I think so often, especially when we talk about women
- 36:33Speaker 2: and the caretaking responsibility, we feel as though there are
- 36:36Speaker 2: so many other things that deserve our time and attention
- 36:39Speaker 2: and energy before we give any sort of energy or
- 36:42Speaker 2: attention to ourselves. When in actuality, it is to no
- 36:46Speaker 2: one's surprise that taking care of yourself can actually make
- 36:49Speaker 2: you be a better person for the other things that
- 36:52Speaker 2: you want to take care of, whether they are living
- 36:55Speaker 2: or not. And then the second thing to touch on
- 36:57Speaker 2: here is also what I taught a roommate years and
- 37:01Speaker 2: years ago, the concept of programming in leave time and
- 37:06Speaker 2: like the.
- 37:07Speaker 3: Buffer after the activity.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Right, So if you know that you're going to need
- 37:11Speaker 2: time to change your clothes before you leave and put
- 37:14Speaker 2: on your watch, okay, so make sure when you're thinking
- 37:17Speaker 2: about I'm going to give five minutes to this that
- 37:20Speaker 2: it's actually probably going to be like I'm going to
- 37:22Speaker 2: give fifteen minutes to this total, and that way you
- 37:26Speaker 2: don't feel guilty when that five minutes quote unquote becomes
- 37:29Speaker 2: a little bit longer. So building in the time, making
- 37:32Speaker 2: an actual like quote unquote meeting with yourself so that
- 37:36Speaker 2: there is no guilt associated with it if you can
- 37:39Speaker 2: avoid it.
- 37:40Speaker 1: That's such a good point about adding the buffers. And
- 37:44Speaker 1: you know, if you have to put it in your calendar.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I've done that, Like you said, a meeting with yourself.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I've blocked time out because then I know I'll stick
- 37:52Speaker 1: with it. Also, if it's really bad, I had to
- 37:55Speaker 1: ask myself if I broke my leg right now, I
- 37:58Speaker 1: would make time to go to the hospital, So you know,
- 38:02Speaker 1: not like it's as extreme as breaking your leg.
- 38:04Speaker 3: But you can find time.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you can totally find time. And I love the
- 38:10Speaker 2: idea of putting it in your calendar for me because
- 38:12Speaker 2: I am like a morning exercise person. It's like, I
- 38:15Speaker 2: feel like I never need to book that time with myself.
- 38:18Speaker 3: But if there is a day maybe.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I'm admittedly not feeling the best after a few glasses
- 38:23Speaker 2: of wine, or I was out late the night before,
- 38:26Speaker 2: et cetera.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Et cetera.
- 38:27Speaker 2: So many reasons why you might wake up the next
- 38:29Speaker 2: day and be like blah, Then I really do that.
- 38:32Speaker 2: I really do look at the calendar for the day
- 38:34Speaker 2: and say to myself, I know I'm not going to
- 38:36Speaker 2: have the emotional, mental, physical capacity to get moving before ten,
- 38:41Speaker 2: When after ten might I be able to plug something
- 38:43Speaker 2: into my routine. And those are the days where that
- 38:45Speaker 2: kindness really comes in handy, Right, It's like, Okay, instead
- 38:49Speaker 2: of a I don't know X run I had on deck,
- 38:51Speaker 2: today is going to be the day that I go
- 38:53Speaker 2: walk fifteen minutes around the block. And that's fine, right,
- 38:56Speaker 2: because it only happens so often that I'm coming from
- 38:59Speaker 2: the place where I'm like, this just isn't going to
- 39:02Speaker 2: be the thing that makes me feel good.
- 39:04Speaker 1: And I'll tell you what, those fifteen minutes of walking
- 39:06Speaker 1: could feel magical when you really yeah, like after a
- 39:10Speaker 1: night of a few glasses of wide or whatever, you
- 39:13Speaker 1: stayed out too late or anything, Oh my gosh, fifteen
- 39:16Speaker 1: minute walk in the fresh air.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Is like, gosh, it's been That's been a really big
- 39:21Speaker 2: rule for me over the past year because I have
- 39:24Speaker 2: a gym in my building, so I don't necessarily always
- 39:28Speaker 2: leave if I'm going to work out, So for me,
- 39:30Speaker 2: if I go to the gym inside, or I have
- 39:32Speaker 2: one of those, you know, not the best mornings. I
- 39:35Speaker 2: wake up and I say, before you sit down at
- 39:37Speaker 2: the desk, rule number one is like, at least walk
- 39:41Speaker 2: around the corner and get a coffee or get outside
- 39:43Speaker 2: and get some air. Regardless of what's happening with the weather.
- 39:46Speaker 2: You can make it around the corner literally a three
- 39:50Speaker 2: minute walk to just get that on your skin, and
- 39:53Speaker 2: you will be so much better for it.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's such a good point. I'm so used to
- 39:57Speaker 1: being outside all the time because because of where we
- 40:00Speaker 1: live that when I travel and there's like a work trip,
- 40:04Speaker 1: it's probably going to be in a city. And after
- 40:07Speaker 1: a day, I'm like, oh my gosh, why do I
- 40:09Speaker 1: feel like this, Like I'm so tired of so this,
- 40:13Speaker 1: And now I'm like, oh, I just have to go outside.
- 40:16Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I'm not used to being outside of the city, Like
- 40:19Speaker 1: I don't even know what to do outside.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I love that.
- 40:24Speaker 2: And then something else that can be really helpful. We
- 40:26Speaker 2: talked about the benefit of community, whether it's in person
- 40:29Speaker 2: or digitally. Do you have any like motivating playlists or
- 40:34Speaker 2: podcasts that you listen to regularly that like kind of
- 40:38Speaker 2: help you garner the inspiration when you're just feeling a
- 40:40Speaker 2: little bit blah.
- 40:42Speaker 1: You know, what I started doing recently is because I'm
- 40:45Speaker 1: somebody that is physically energized by music, and I think
- 40:49Speaker 1: my playlist on Spotify is like I think it's missus
- 40:53Speaker 1: space Cadet runs, so I will use music while I'm
- 40:57Speaker 1: running to give me energy. But what I started to
- 41:01Speaker 1: do is play my playlist like before I even get
- 41:06Speaker 1: ready and I'm in that wead like, oh my gosh,
- 41:08Speaker 1: I just I don't feel like it all. It's so
- 41:11Speaker 1: easy to just hit play and the music will be
- 41:14Speaker 1: like it'll motivate me and give me the energy to
- 41:17Speaker 1: be like all right, here we go.
- 41:19Speaker 3: We're doing this.
- 41:19Speaker 1: So yeah, definitely music and I this is embarrassing, but
- 41:26Speaker 1: I don't care. I listen to my own podcast because I,
- 41:30Speaker 1: for some reason cannot remember what we talked about, so
- 41:34Speaker 1: it's almost like I'm listening to somebody else, which I
- 41:37Speaker 1: probably should get that checked out.
- 41:39Speaker 3: And the other thing is I don't have one right now.
- 41:42Speaker 1: But sometimes you come across like a binge able podcast
- 41:46Speaker 1: that's like almost guilty Pleasure, you know, like one of
- 41:50Speaker 1: those storyline type podcasts, And so I'll tell myself, like,
- 41:55Speaker 1: you can only listen to this if you are like
- 41:57Speaker 1: walking or running, and so that'll to motivate me because
- 42:00Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my gosh, I have to find out
- 42:02Speaker 1: what happened in like XYZ story, and that alone sometimes
- 42:07Speaker 1: just gets me out.
- 42:09Speaker 3: That alone, I love.
- 42:10Speaker 2: A story like podcast, like a podcast like series that
- 42:14Speaker 2: has like four or five episodes and you can like
- 42:16Speaker 2: really learn something over time. I know, I like jokingly
- 42:19Speaker 2: mentioned Oprah when we were talking about the opportunity to
- 42:22Speaker 2: like throw sneakers at people. But there was a series
- 42:25Speaker 2: called Making Oprah from NPR, and I remember that. I
- 42:28Speaker 2: was like one day driving somewhere, which I don't drive often,
- 42:32Speaker 2: so I forget where I was.
- 42:33Speaker 3: I was going to Rhode Island.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I'd rented a car, and I thought to myself, I
- 42:37Speaker 2: have no idea how Oprah became Oprah, and so like
- 42:40Speaker 2: I googled, and sure enough, there was an MPR series
- 42:43Speaker 2: called Making Oprah, and I learned her whole.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Story over the course of five days.
- 42:46Speaker 2: And I was listening to it in the car and
- 42:49Speaker 2: listening to it running, and it really does make the
- 42:52Speaker 2: miles go by and the time go by a lot faster.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I know there's some people that don't listen to anything
- 42:58Speaker 1: and they're like, I need to focus on my form
- 43:00Speaker 1: and my cadence and you.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Know all of that.
- 43:02Speaker 1: But I'm like, I just want to get the run
- 43:04Speaker 1: over with a lot of the times. And this is
- 43:07Speaker 1: like my you know, like you mentioned before me time,
- 43:11Speaker 1: like my like guilt free me time.
- 43:13Speaker 3: I'm going to enjoy it, you know. Yeah, totally.
- 43:16Speaker 2: I love your recommendation for playing the running playlist before
- 43:20Speaker 2: you get out there to really hype up. I feel like,
- 43:22Speaker 2: now there's a really good opportunity for like the pre
- 43:26Speaker 2: run mix. Yeah, I'm going to have to start compiling
- 43:30Speaker 2: a Spotify we can collaborate on that.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Yeah. I love that idea.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Okay, we have given the hurdlers so many good tips
- 43:38Speaker 2: here when it comes to getting out on the run.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Is there anything else that comes to mind before we
- 43:43Speaker 2: really wind down when we think about hacks for lacing
- 43:48Speaker 2: up and making things just a little bit easier.
- 43:51Speaker 3: I focus on fun personally.
- 43:53Speaker 1: I you know, my run hack is I always joke like, oh,
- 43:57Speaker 1: I listened to classical music and pretend I'm late for
- 43:59Speaker 1: the ball, but you don't necessarily like have to pretend
- 44:03Speaker 1: you're late for a ball. But sometimes cinematic music like
- 44:06Speaker 1: that you'd hear in a movie, and if you have
- 44:09Speaker 1: a really good imagination, which is good for your brain.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So always use your imagination, and you can imagine like
- 44:14Speaker 1: a scenario like maybe you're like running through city blocks
- 44:17Speaker 1: and like someone's you know, the back guy is behind you,
- 44:21Speaker 1: and like at every corner you have to like go
- 44:23Speaker 1: faster or something. It's really fun at the end of
- 44:26Speaker 1: a run when you can like you know, you have
- 44:28Speaker 1: to maybe go faster or those type of fun things
- 44:33Speaker 1: are my favorite hacks.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Aaron is in a Marvel movie.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Every time she's out for a run, that's one hundred
- 44:40Speaker 2: percent what's going on inside of her mind. I do
- 44:43Speaker 2: use music to have some fun sometimes, and that I
- 44:46Speaker 2: have the same songs repeated on the playlist at different times,
- 44:51Speaker 2: and so that means that every I don't know, if
- 44:54Speaker 2: I'm going on a long run and a song comes
- 44:56Speaker 2: on every forty five minutes, it's like my like superhero
- 45:00Speaker 2: pump up song, which means like, okay, get out of
- 45:03Speaker 2: your head, run faster this song, and then I realize
- 45:07Speaker 2: that it feels easier again when you were kind of
- 45:09Speaker 2: talking yourself down before that came on.
- 45:12Speaker 3: So there are a lot of different tricks and tips
- 45:13Speaker 3: you can use.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Another one that I love that has to do with
- 45:16Speaker 2: music is if I have to do the run inside
- 45:19Speaker 2: because of whether or timing or whatever, I treat it
- 45:23Speaker 2: like a power hour. So that means that every minute
- 45:26Speaker 2: on the minute, I'll change the song on my headphones
- 45:29Speaker 2: and it goes to a new song, and that makes
- 45:31Speaker 2: the time go a lot faster. I really like that,
- 45:35Speaker 2: minus the drinking, of course, unless we're talking like an
- 45:38Speaker 2: electrolyte beverage.
- 45:39Speaker 3: But yeah, no beer in the treadmill power hour. No disclaimer, disclaimer.
- 45:45Speaker 3: Oh my god. Well, so many great tips in here.
- 45:47Speaker 2: I absolutely love this conversation, and I love the opportunity,
- 45:50Speaker 2: as always to chat with you before I let you
- 45:53Speaker 2: go today, talk to me about what you're excited about
- 45:55Speaker 2: right now, what's on deck for Aaron in the months
- 45:58Speaker 2: to come.
- 45:59Speaker 1: I'm excited for Boston Marathon weekend. I'll be there doing events,
- 46:04Speaker 1: cheering people on. Like my favorite thing to do is
- 46:07Speaker 1: just like hype people up during their races. So I'm
- 46:11Speaker 1: excited for that and I'm excited that the weather is
- 46:15Speaker 1: warming up and I'm ramping up my miles. So yeah,
- 46:19Speaker 1: I'm excited to take these run hacks and put them
- 46:21Speaker 1: to practice.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Well, I will check in with you and we'll make
- 46:25Speaker 2: sure to list some of the places you're going to
- 46:27Speaker 2: be Boston weekend in the show notes, so if you're
- 46:29Speaker 2: listening to this and you're going to be local, we
- 46:31Speaker 2: can all sync up. And then, on that note, for
- 46:34Speaker 2: those that might not follow you just yet on social media,
- 46:37Speaker 2: give us your info.
- 46:37Speaker 3: How do they keep up with you? Erin on TikTok
- 46:41Speaker 3: and Instagram.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Honestly, it's easier to just type in Aaron asar Azar
- 46:46Speaker 1: because you know Instagram, I miss a space cadet.
- 46:49Speaker 3: People must spell it.
- 46:50Speaker 1: So Aaron asar And also my podcast non members only.
- 46:56Speaker 1: If you feel like hanging out with friends for a
- 46:58Speaker 1: lighthearted conversation, but you don't want to physically hang out
- 47:01Speaker 1: with friends, just come listen to us for an hour.
- 47:04Speaker 3: She's got your back.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I'm over at Emily's Body and at Hurdle Podcasts. Another
