- 0:01Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have as conversations about
- 0:08things that really matter in our lives.
- 0:12And now here's your host, Roxanne Derhodge.
- 0:38Hi, everyone.
- 0:38It's Roxanne Sand.
- 0:40I have a someone that I've known actually goodness, Mike.
- 0:43I'm trying to think of how long we've known each other.
- 0:46Mike's strange.
- 0:46Mike is, is someone that's been in, the migrant community and has done some pretty big things
- 0:53in the world in my opinion.
- 0:55So, Mike, thanks for joining me off on, my show today.
- 0:59Thanks for having me, Roxanne.
- 1:00Appreciate it.
- 1:01So, Mike, I, you know, I'm gonna tell you some of the things that I know about Mike, but, I
- 1:05want Mike to, share with you what he's been up to.
- 1:08Mike has, been in the Niagara community for a very long time.
- 1:12I remember being at the hospital and us watching you at the hospital and you were
- 1:15Roxanne.
- 1:16That's, you know, everybody stopped to watch you box when you were the Olympics.
- 1:19And so Mike is a, Olympic boxer.
- 1:23He is also a part of city council.
- 1:25And he has ran across Canada for children's cancer.
- 1:29Is that what it was, Mike, that you did?
- 1:31Yes.
- 1:31As well as, Ron Montgomery.
- 1:34Of Ronald McDonald House.
- 1:35And recently, the power of social media, right?
- 1:38So, I, you know, I'm on Mike's Facebook and, I'd heard about the box run, but it's one
- 1:46thing, you know, when you hear about it.
- 1:47And so this is, wanted to talk about that, but he was almost heard about the El Camino and
- 1:53then, of course, getting intrigued by the El Camino.
- 1:55And then when you were there running and then you know, when you were sweaty and couldn't
- 2:00breathe and all that stuff.
- 2:01It really just kind of brought it to like about the importance of following the passions in
- 2:06your heart, what what's important to you.
- 2:08So that's why I wanted Mike to come on and chat a little bit with us today.
- 2:12So, like, I don't know, you know, I've obviously missed a lot of things about you, but
- 2:16what what other things should people know about you that are listening?
- 2:20Well, I I was, I was on the national boxing team for many, many years as I participated in,
- 2:253 of the games, finish 5th in Atlanta.
- 2:30That was my best result, and it was kind of a controversial decision.
- 2:34But, yeah, I just, you know, when I was ten years old, I, I got in the sport of Roxanne,
- 2:40and I was, you know, competing, you know, I was at Saint Mary's Elementary Schools here in
- 2:44Niagara Falls and small school, you know, 100 kids, and, you know, didn't know if I want to
- 2:49excel in boxing.
- 2:50I was playing, soccer and hockey at the same time.
- 2:53It was a goaltender.
- 2:55And, you know, in 1984, I just remember watching the, Summer Olympic Games in Los
- 3:02Angeles and watching 2 of my idols, Sean Sullivan and Willie Duette, who ended up
- 3:08winning 2 silver medals.
- 3:10For Canada and watching these guys and on the top of the, you know, the second on the top of
- 3:14the podium, the the flag being risen, just thinking, wow, I wish I could get to that
- 3:18level.
- 3:20Someday, but, you know, when you're a kid, you're you think you gotta go to some special
- 3:23Olympic school or something like that.
- 3:25So I ended up kind of giving up, hockey and and soccer and still wonder how he would have done
- 3:30if I would have kept up with those sports, but went on with the sport of boxing and you know,
- 3:36you you set goals for yourself.
- 3:38To get to know the games, you have to obviously set many goals for yourself.
- 3:42So first one was to go to the, Ontario provincial partnerships and try to win them in
- 3:47your particular way class and, an age group.
- 3:50And I did, and I won, and I ended up going to the, national championships.
- 3:54So compete against all the other provinces in my age group and weight class and made it all
- 4:00the way to the finals and lost to a boxer.
- 4:02From Quebec, but, you know, it was second Encana, which was, pretty amazing.
- 4:07And, you know, I trained harder.
- 4:09And then the I made it all the way to the finals again and lost to another boxer from
- 4:14Quebec.
- 4:14So the French guys were beating up in the finals.
- 4:18But in in, you know, in 1987, I ended up, going to the proventials and winning them and going
- 4:26to the nationals.
- 4:27They were in Saint John's Newfoundland and, ended up winning, the national championships as
- 4:33a as a junior.
- 4:35So I was, you know, 17, and I, you know, once you're a national champion, you begin to travel
- 4:41all over the world Roxanne for King Canada wearing the red and white which was just
- 4:46amazing and went to so many different countries representing Canada.
- 4:50And, so it was gearing up for the senior level to get to the Olympic games.
- 4:55And, my first chance was to go to the 1992 Olympic games, in Barcelona and Spain.
- 5:02And, I, you know, just to get to the Olympics, that particular year they started, you had to
- 5:07not qualify through all not only qualify through Canada, but you had to qualify North
- 5:11American South America as well.
- 5:13So you had to finish in the top 5 in your weight class, which back then was
- 5:17featherweight.
- 5:18And, I qualify, which was amazing.
- 5:21And, you know, I think, you know, I'm just getting out of high school at that time at
- 5:25Stanford Collegiate in Niagara Falls and a little bit of a cocky kid and, you know, I was
- 5:31telling remember going to the Barcelona Olympics and telling people I'm going there.
- 5:35I'm gonna wanna blow metal.
- 5:37I'm gonna come back.
- 5:38I'm gonna, I'm gonna turn professional.
- 5:41I'm gonna be a world champion and make millions.
- 5:44And, well, you know, go to these big big Olympic games and you and you see them on TV
- 5:49and, you know, they have the opening ceremonies where you enter through the tunnel and there's,
- 5:53like, 80,000 people cheering for you.
- 5:55I remember being in that line up in 92.
- 5:57And, man, it was, you know, my one of 300 Canadian athletes getting ready, and we're, you
- 6:05know, 10th down the line from going in alphabet a quarter in the in the house, Canada, and
- 6:08going up to tunnel and I just froze and never had kinda had that experience before and wasn't
- 6:13prepared for it.
- 6:14And, 2 days later, I my first Roxanne match, I lost, and I was done Leverage.
- 6:19In boxing, there's no second chance once you lose, you're done.
- 6:24So, you know, I came back, you know, from Barcelona to Canada and not winning a gold
- 6:29medal and not gonna turn professional and not gonna make millions and realize, you know, you
- 6:34have to you know, seeing all these great track suits and, you know, that you're competing for
- 6:39in Canada and all these trophies and medals, but, you know, in the end, that's not gonna
- 6:42take your bills.
- 6:44So, you know, schooling was obviously very important.
- 6:47So, you know, I kept on with that, but I also kept with my boxing career and Beam began to
- 6:54get more experience internationally boxing for Canada.
- 6:58And then went on to the next Olympic games were, in Atlanta in 96.
- 7:05And, I was well prepared.
- 7:06I was, ranked, 5th in the world at the time going to the to those, trials.
- 7:12And I went through 1, the, the trials and 1 in North America, South American Championship.
- 7:17So I went there and, it it was just, amazing.
- 7:23So I go to Atlanta and it's just pick out of the hat who you type who you who you box, like
- 7:28bingo balls, you know, number you're fighting, Mexico, and I ended up winning against Mexico.
- 7:33And then, fighting another boxer from Armenia and and beat him.
- 7:37And then I was in the quarter finals boxing of Bulgaria, Tancho Tancho.
- 7:43And, I went in and, you know, the the judging, the head official of the judging, the guy was
- 7:49from Bulgaria, from his home country ended up losing the match when I I thought I should have
- 7:54won, and a lot of people from Canada thought I should have won, and very upset because, you
- 7:59know, you 4 years of your life you're training your butt off and, you know, the judges kinda
- 8:05take it away from you and, you know, just like you know, bigger skateings, you know,
- 8:10synchronized swimming.
- 8:11The judges can, take it away from you, and we put a protest in, but, nothing happened.
- 8:17He went on to go and win a silver medal.
- 8:20So I think I shouldn't want at least a silver medal.
- 8:23So it's I was so upset, you know, crying, very upset, and not wanting to do the sport anymore.
- 8:30And, you know, I started getting a lot of letters and emails to the Olympic village when
- 8:37I was in Atlanta the last few days and, you know, the same might keep your head held high.
- 8:41You should have won that match.
- 8:43You know, keep going and I got a particular email from my idol, Willie Duette.
- 8:49He was, the reason why I got into Roxanne.
- 8:52Why why wanna go to Olympics?
- 8:53Because was was this guy.
- 8:55And he basically just said, you know, turn negatives into positives.
- 8:59You know, in life, you're gonna go through that, you know, whether it may be, you know,
- 9:03getting laid off from a job, getting fired, stuff happens in life that it's not fair, and,
- 9:10this certainly wasn't fair.
- 9:11And I was just thinking, man, this guy went out of his way.
- 9:13He sent me this, and so I decided to give it another shot.
- 9:17And in the meantime, I met this this guy.
- 9:20His name was Bob Lavelle, and his nickname was Heater.
- 9:23And heater was a friend of my father's, and he was a very, he was a mentor of mine, and he
- 9:29worked for Bell Mobility at the time.
- 9:31So he actually gave me cell phone when cell phones just started coming out to kinda Yeah.
- 9:36Keep in contact with your friends and family and media while you're away boxing and he
- 9:40actually got me to go to train in in, in Toronto.
- 9:45And, and, you know, he saw the potential, but, you know, you need a little help, you know, as
- 9:50an amateur boxer or any amateur athlete that represents Canada, you don't get paid a lot.
- 9:56So, you know, you're working full time or going to school full time as well as training full
- 9:59time.
- 9:59So Heater or Bob helped me out quite a bit and was amazing.
- 10:04And then, you know, I went on to to, go to the 1998 common games in Malaysian won the gold
- 10:10medal there.
- 10:10And, you know, just remember being on the top of the podium, listen to the national anthem
- 10:15Blair and the flag being I remember watching Donovan Bailey and a few others when they won
- 10:20and they're, you know, crying.
- 10:22And I said, oh, that never happens.
- 10:23I don't ever, you know, I'll never cry while I got up there.
- 10:26I cried like a little baby, you know, so proud of, representing Canada when the gold medal and
- 10:31bringing it back to, to kick to Canada and, in particular, Niagara Falls.
- 10:35And, It was because of a heater that really helped me out, and I ended up going to my last
- 10:39Olympic games, which was in Sydney, Australia in 2000.
- 10:43And, It was a tough drive.
- 10:46I drew the 2nd best box in the world, and I lost lost legitimately, but it was because of
- 10:50heater that really help me out, to get to those last Olympic games and win the gold medal.
- 10:56And, you know, after that, I I I became a real estate agent and, train boxers myself.
- 11:03And, you know, wasn't sure what the future you know, had in store for me in in 2008, heater or
- 11:12Bob, he he asked me to go to the Olympics in Beijing as a spectator because his niece was
- 11:17competing, for baseball, Caitlin, lever.
- 11:22So I said, yeah, I'd love to, you know, just lend me time and stuff like that.
- 11:25So you know, I was waiting a few weeks, and I haven't heard from heater.
- 11:30So I phoned here, and I said, heater, what's going on?
- 11:32I'm waiting to see know, what's going on if we're gonna go to Beijing and and, and watch
- 11:37your niece.
- 11:37And he said, Mike, I got this pain in my shoulder that's brought me to my knees, and I
- 11:42always knew he'd eaters big, big guy strong, you know, not to affect him.
- 11:45He said, well, you, you know, obviously, you gotta get that checked out.
- 11:48And told me a few days later, he says, Mike, I got diagnosed with cancer.
- 11:53Oh.
- 11:53And, you know, I didn't know much about cancer and, you know, it was heartbreaking and he
- 11:59didn't know where the cancer kinda stem from the original spot, but, you know, he found out
- 12:04that it was pancreatic cancer.
- 12:06If there's a cancer you don't want, that's the cancer.
- 12:08And, you know, went through all the treatments and everything, and he had some high profile
- 12:13guys who were helping them out with Larry Playfair and and an actual hockey player in the
- 12:18States who's going through great treatment, but, you know, 8 short months, he passed away
- 12:23and and, I was really, really devastated.
- 12:26I remember being at the visitation and just like, it didn't hit me until I got there and I
- 12:30was just balling my eyes on.
- 12:32I remember Dougie Gilmore, coming, who's an exter automate belief and friends of heater and
- 12:38coming up and hugging me and and, you know, just said it was all, you know, heater was
- 12:42always proud in.
- 12:43You know, and so I thought I remember it after his funeral, I thought, what can we do to kinda
- 12:47carry on Peter's legacy?
- 12:48He did so much for children and and charities and helping athletes like myself.
- 12:53So I decided, to start an event at Oaks Park in Niagara Falls called heaters heroes run for
- 13:00children, and basically it was like a mini kind of wish foundation where, we would help kids
- 13:06who had, terminal illnesses or life altering illnesses or injuries.
- 13:11And, they would basically just walk or run or whatever they could do around, the four hundred
- 13:16meter track around the soccer pitch at Oaks Park here in Niagara Falls, and, So we did it
- 13:22and we had 13 children and, we got a committee together and we raised, I think it was over
- 13:27$13,000 that first year, and we help different, kids.
- 13:31But this one little girl, Kelsey Hill, she got a direct impact on me and you know, she had a
- 13:39brain tumor and, she was half paralyzed and, she had a patch of her eye and, and, you know,
- 13:49she she participated in in her wish and her family's wish was just to have, chairlift from
- 13:55where she was sleeping to the bathroom because they're on different levels.
- 13:58So we made that happen.
- 13:59And I actually pushed her in the Terry Fox run about a month later after that.
- 14:03The same park, ironically at Oaks Park, and, we came so close and on Facebook all the time,
- 14:10and, you know, she was only 12 at the time, and, I was at the volunteer kind of party after
- 14:16that we were, at the Fallsier Hoose Brigade in Niagara Falls, and, you know, these volunteers,
- 14:21they are just kind of thank him for the event at Oaks Park.
- 14:24And, you know, had a few pops, and we were celebrating a little bit.
- 14:30And I remember just thinking, you know, putting everything together about heater and about this
- 14:35poor little girl from Kelsey Hill once she was going through and he pushed her and in the
- 14:39Terry Fox run, and and that Terry Fox really just kinda hit me.
- 14:43I said, does anyone ever we knew Terry that started his marathon of Holtback in 1988 for
- 14:4812, so he made it all the way.
- 14:50He was attempting to, run across Canada with his prosthetic and he made it all near all the
- 14:56way near thunder bay and was forced to stop.
- 14:58And I said, does anyone ever kind of continued his run to raw Google it that day and and no
- 15:04one had.
- 15:04And it was like, I would just, like, rate that second.
- 15:07I'm like, I'm doing it.
- 15:08I'm doing it.
- 15:09Wow.
- 15:09So I remember November 1st, 2011, I started running.
- 15:15And, it was I was just training for this run, and I haven't told anybody about it.
- 15:20Really.
- 15:21And, you know, so I, you know, I kinda wanted to implement what Terry Fox did 32 years before
- 15:29and try to run a marathon today.
- 15:30And in boxing, we always ran five miles as fast as we can, and that was it.
- 15:34But here, you gotta, obviously, pace yourself.
- 15:35You wanna run a marathon.
- 15:36A day.
- 15:37So I started running, and I remember just starting, and my long run would be 30
- 15:42kilometers, and it would take, you know, like, 3 hours and I remember seeing my one friend,
- 15:47Mike Majewski, and he was out with his family, like, at, like, 9 in the morning, he saw me.
- 15:51And then, like, 3 hours later, he saw me still running.
- 15:54He's like, like, what are you doing?
- 15:55I say I was out shopping.
- 15:56I come out and you're still running.
- 15:57I go out of thinking about doing this run.
- 15:59I'm not sure.
- 16:00Didn't really fill them in.
- 16:02Well, in December, I got a horrible call from Kelsey's mom that, Kelsey's mom, Lana Hill,
- 16:09said Kelsey passed away this morning.
- 16:11And I was just, another, you know, more devastating news.
- 16:15And, you know, I said, you know, if I was thinking about, I'm definitely doing it now.
- 16:19And, you know, to run across Canada, you obviously need support and didn't really know
- 16:24what I needed.
- 16:25So I did my research, so I'm, you know, trying to get an RV because you obviously gotta sleep
- 16:30in places and, you know, different stops to, you know, people gotta cook for you and and I
- 16:36wanted to go to different schools.
- 16:38I needed people to raise that on social media.
- 16:40So I got a core group of people together and, And I phoned my buddy, Tim Getty's, and Tim is
- 16:46a big, big guy, one of my best friends I've known him since grade 9.
- 16:49He would like John Candy, funny, funny guy.
- 16:52So there's a guy he went out there and kinda, you know, keeping things enjoyable while you're
- 16:57doing it.
- 16:58It's Tim.
- 16:58And, when I phoned him, he says, Mike, of course, I love to help you.
- 17:02He goes, in fact, my son's friend, Matteo Mancini, has the same cancer as Terry Fox.
- 17:07He's getting his leg amputated in 2 days.
- 17:09And he was only eleven years old.
- 17:11So I, you know, he's from Thorold, and I said, it just kinda never ends, you know, stemming
- 17:15from heater now to Kelsey, now to Matteo, And I thought to myself, wouldn't wouldn't it be
- 17:20great?
- 17:20Cause my plan was to start April 12th, 2012, so it'd be 32 years to the date that Terry dipped
- 17:27his leg in the Atlantic Ocean, and I was hopefully gonna continue his run from your
- 17:31thunder day where he's forced to stop.
- 17:32So that was the date we were looking for.
- 17:34So we got together, and I thought, wouldn't it be great if Matteo could come out?
- 17:39You know, we know we just gotta go through treatment at McMaster for, for chemo and and
- 17:44flying back and forth.
- 17:46But what a great legacy would be for Matteo and, Matteo's parents were kinda going through
- 17:51separation at the time and You see that a lot happening with with kids who fight cancer,
- 17:57their parents, obviously, it's it's tough to stay together because there's so stressful, you
- 18:03know, mentally and and, you know, going through financially.
- 18:06So when we approached, Matteo, And I said, this is what we wanna do, and and his mom was like,
- 18:14absolutely not.
- 18:14You're not taking my baby anywhere from me.
- 18:17As he's fighting cancer and going through this.
- 18:20And m Mateo, they started looking his eyes.
- 18:23He says, mom, I wanna be the next Terry Fox.
- 18:25So it's kinda something they they couldn't say no.
- 18:29So we, we had several meetings.
- 18:33We held them at the Falls River Gaye, which I'm a member at in Niagara Falls, and, kind of what
- 18:38we wanted to, do and accomplish and where our money you wanted to go.
- 18:41We weren't sure and what we wanted to call it.
- 18:44You know, my initial, thing, kind of title for it was, Mateo and Mike's journey to K O Cancer.
- 18:51To Kayo Childhood Cancer.
- 18:53We got to the meeting, and it was about probably about 2 weeks before I'm supposed to
- 18:58leave.
- 18:59Plan leaving.
- 18:59So I ended up getting an RV donated, from a family and and, And when I went, we had this
- 19:08meeting, and my buddy, Andy Byrd, who's kind of a a business guy.
- 19:13And and, he he knows the stuff.
- 19:15He goes to China, and he he does some import export and stuff.
- 19:18And it was, Mike, I liked the, what you're doing.
- 19:21I think it's great.
- 19:22He goes, I I the name, I'm not sure about.
- 19:24He goes, I I don't think say you wanted to continue this after this.
- 19:28How can you do that with that kind of name or keep it going?
- 19:31So we came up with kind of a logo and it's it was box run.
- 19:35A boxer.
- 19:36I ran Rhine with Fox, and it was just kinda, you know, out sticking outside the box, and it
- 19:42was so many different meetings.
- 19:43Box run running for the fight.
- 19:47I was like, wow.
- 19:48I love it.
- 19:49You know what I mean?
- 19:49There was there was one person that really liked it.
- 19:51And then afterwards, he kinda got on board but then there was a couple of people that were
- 19:56just, like, really negative that were my friends.
- 19:59They're like, Mike, you're gonna lose, you know, I was running a bar at the time.
- 20:01He said, you're gonna lose your job.
- 20:03How are you gonna afford to do this?
- 20:06You know, it needs more preparing, and I've just said, you know, listen, guys, I will get
- 20:10my backpack right now and I'll start running away from this call.
- 20:12I'm prepared.
- 20:13I've been running.
- 20:14I've been doing this.
- 20:15I've been training for 4 months, so I'm ready to do it.
- 20:18Well, you know, they all kinda changed their when I was so positive and and motivated them
- 20:23kind of.
- 20:23So we had a, you know, kind of a going away party where we raised, like, $15,000 right
- 20:29away, which was really amazing.
- 20:30And one day within a week, we did it, and it was crazy.
- 20:34So we got our our RV and We, we drove to Thunder Bay and was on April 10th that we
- 20:42drove.
- 20:43Got there at April 11th.
- 20:44And a lot of people don't know, but Terry Fox never made it to Thunder Bay.
- 20:48He actually named it.
- 20:49Made it to this little town and, scriber, or in a, shoonya.
- 20:55And that there's a little post there where he ended, and it says, you know, of the mileage
- 21:01and the date that he ended, which is September 1st, 2018.
- 21:04And it took us 2 or 3 times to drive past this post.
- 21:08So we ended up meeting with the mayor of, of Shumya, and there was actually, a petition
- 21:13because they wanna move this post because the 2 lane highway, they want to move in a 4 lane
- 21:17highway.
- 21:18So I signed a petition And Mateo wasn't there at the time because he we had to fly him in
- 21:22because he couldn't be in the RFPs for 17 hours on a on a truck up there.
- 21:27We waited for them.
- 21:28We signed a petition and, you know, I think, you know, to to move this post, Terry Fox is
- 21:32the biggest hero of all time in Canada.
- 21:34That's, you know, I think there should be a holiday named after him.
- 21:36Right?
- 21:38So I signed a petition.
- 21:39I said, if anyway, if you're gonna put this two lane into a four lane, you know, move the post
- 21:43in the middle and have a Tim Hortons.
- 21:45You can't get more Canadian than that.
- 21:46You know, it would be awesome.
- 21:47So Yeah.
- 21:48We, it was kinda funny because we were measuring The, so we started in Chuna, and we
- 21:55were supposed to meet the morning and and Matteo came back the the the night of on 11th.
- 21:59So in the morning on 12th, We stayed in in a Thunder Day at a at a hotel, which which a lot
- 22:04of people were donating.
- 22:05So if someone donated a hotel in in Thunder Bay, so we drove, and measured it out from the
- 22:11point where he was forced to stop to the big, huge statue of Terry Fox in, in Thunder Bay.
- 22:17And it was, approximately, I think it was 8 kilometers or Yeah.
- 22:248 kilometers we measured.
- 22:26So I I said, oh, I can run that.
- 22:28No problem.
- 22:29So we're meeting the mayor of Shania and then meeting the mayor of Thunder Bay.
- 22:32So I had about you know, an hour and a half, we met, and and the the girl's the mayor of
- 22:37shooting.
- 22:37It's like, he better get going.
- 22:38You gotta, you know, like, 14 kilometers.
- 22:40I mean, oh, we measured it.
- 22:41It's like 8 kilometers.
- 22:43Well, we didn't realize that our RV was an American RV was measuring miles.
- 22:48Oh, okay.
- 22:48So right away, we were like, Oh my god.
- 22:50And I got, you know, Tim Getty's who he was trying to convert, miles to kilometers, and I
- 22:55know I was going a lot more than marathons.
- 22:58Time, but nonetheless, I made it to, to the statue that day on time, and there was, you
- 23:02know, a little bit of a crowd, know, it wasn't much, but we met the mayor and there was some
- 23:07film there.
- 23:08And, they were filming, Mateo and and talking to him and he was very positive.
- 23:14And then, Matteo left and he went back to McVaster for treatments.
- 23:19We were planning it.
- 23:20So the next next kind of major city that Matteo would come in would be Winnipeg and then we'd
- 23:25go to Regina, Calgary, and then have him in Victoria and have him dip his leg in the ocean,
- 23:31Terry Fox did 3 2 years before.
- 23:34And, so Matteo left and so I started running in in Northern Ontario.
- 23:39The hills are huge.
- 23:40So basically, would run to the RV and then we do eight and a half kilometers five times a
- 23:45day, to make up that marathon.
- 23:48So I'd run and it'd be on the side of the highway and run it by myself.
- 23:52And these hills were, you know, I thought, you know, running up Clifton Hill, the training,
- 23:55and stuff I was doing was gonna be enough in fireman's part to meet enough for these hills
- 23:59in Northern Ontario, which they weren't.
- 24:01It was brutal.
- 24:02And I right away, you know, I was, my legs were getting really sore and, you know, so every 8
- 24:07and a half kilometers, I stop for, like, 15, 20 minutes.
- 24:10Then on my 3rd leg, which would be, you know, like, 25 kilometers.
- 24:13I stop for lunch.
- 24:15And then, you know, I do that extra two legs.
- 24:17And then, you know, I'd be done for the day and you know, it was so tough, especially the last
- 24:21couple of legs where you're just running and, you know, the physical part was really tough at
- 24:26the beginning.
- 24:27And then, you know, we got to where I remember getting caught in a blizzard.
- 24:30The 6th day we were there.
- 24:31We couldn't get kicked off the highway, but but we knew we're on schedule.
- 24:35So I was running on the highway, and basically it was blocked off.
- 24:39And the cops basically kicked us off.
- 24:42And yelling at us, swearing at us, and they saw, basically, on the side of the RV, what we
- 24:46were doing.
- 24:46They said, guys, you know what you're doing.
- 24:48It's a great cause, but no air over here for your safety.
- 24:50You couldn't even see it on running in this, like, foot, snow on on the on the highway,
- 24:55highway number 1 to Transcat on the highway.
- 24:58And, so we ended up finishing the marathon that day, which was pretty extraordinary because we
- 25:02had to come back about 4 or 5 hours later till it's all cleared out.
- 25:06But we, you know, and that the mental, it started getting really mentally tough, you
- 25:11know, after a week or so as we're getting towards you know, the Manitoba border because,
- 25:16you know, these just hills are huge, and you're by yourself.
- 25:19And, you know, I'm listening.
- 25:20What what happens to you mentally?
- 25:22Because, like, I mean, I know obviously you're an Olympian and you know, like, but mentally,
- 25:26what happens to you when physically you're that tired?
- 25:29What tell me what happens in your head.
- 25:31Well, you're just thinking, and and music was a big part of it at first.
- 25:34So I would have, you know, 50, 60 songs that I'm listening to.
- 25:38And, you know, my favorite songs were you know, running on empty was one of my favorite from
- 25:43Jackson Brown.
- 25:44You know what I mean?
- 25:45And against the win, Bob Seager.
- 25:48When you swipe every time you get something, you'd be like, okay.
- 25:50You know, and I'd be thinking I'd put my Kelsey Hill shirt on or think of the tail and thinking
- 25:55of what these kids had to go through and I'd suck it up and get through and get through the
- 25:59end of the day.
- 26:00And, okay, and then, you know, just, you know, the food the nutrition, right?
- 26:04I'm losing weight and you're trying to eat as much as you can, but, you know, you're burning
- 26:075000 calories a day.
- 26:09It's it's impossible to consume that.
- 26:12So you're losing weight and you're losing strength, but, the mental part got over the
- 26:16physical part.
- 26:17You know, you're fighting through it.
- 26:18So you
- 26:18just you just kept in your mind.
- 26:21This is bigger than me.
- 26:23This is about, you know, heater.
- 26:26This is about Kelsey.
- 26:27This is about Mateo.
- 26:29And that's is that what you know, when you're I'm sure physically, like, I've I was listening
- 26:33to you when you're in Spain, and I was like, wow.
- 26:36Like, you know, because your body's fighting against you in every way, like you said, but
- 26:41you still somehow in your mind kept that image of what you wanted to achieve.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:46And it was amazing because and and, you know, even in the second one, I'm totally talking
- 26:51about, but every time that I felt like I can't do this anymore.
- 26:55I'd get some kind of message or an email, and we have a blog on on Facebook, and we would do
- 27:01videos and you know, the since the social media has changed so much from Facebook and that,
- 27:07like, we had to we brought a guy a video on for there, and he would have to filmas at the end,
- 27:11and I donate or dedicate every day to someone who has, you know, is fighting cancer, passed
- 27:16away from cancer.
- 27:17I could put flags Canadian flags from the Dollar store on the highway.
- 27:21And I know there's still a couple, taped up to, some bulls and stuff, so I'm dedicated to to,
- 27:28to a child and put word of the day like strength or courage.
- 27:32And, you know, it was, it was great and we do a blog, but they would have to this video, it's
- 27:39it it's amazing when you think it went out, they would have to condense it.
- 27:42It would take, like, 8 or 9 hour put this, like, 32nd video of me dedicating something and
- 27:46put it on Facebook and people were were on Facebook.
- 27:49But, like, Mike, I can't sleep unless and we were, like, 2 or 3 days behind some because of
- 27:53these videos, he had took a lot a lot to do.
- 27:55So everyone's like, I can't sleep unless I get to your your video blog at night.
- 27:59So, you know, and just the, the mental part going up these hills, just looking for the RV
- 28:05and not seeing it go down a hill and look it back up there.
- 28:07There's the RV.
- 28:08It's like, oh, I need a little bit of rest.
- 28:10You know?
- 28:11Reenergize in food and drinks and whatever I can get it in my body and, you know, and and
- 28:17praying for flat land.
- 28:18Well, guess what?
- 28:18In Manitoba, I got my wish.
- 28:20Because now I could see my RV 5 kilometers away and it's not getting any closer because there's
- 28:25no hills at
- 28:26all.
- 28:27Right.
- 28:27Right.
- 28:28But, it started picking up.
- 28:29The Roxanne started picking up momentum as we got into Manitoba.
- 28:33You started getting requests from schools.
- 28:35Which was great.
- 28:36Media was coming out and, interviewing media on the side of the road about the cause, and we're
- 28:40getting donations.
- 28:44And it was it was amazing.
- 28:45And, but now it was getting tougher for me because now I'm going to talk to schools which
- 28:51are an hour away.
- 28:52We would take the RV.
- 28:54We would take an hour, go talk for an hour, set up, and then come back.
- 28:57And now that's not your foot.
- 28:58Now these 5 hour runs, are turning into, like, 9 hour runs and getting interviewed and stuff.
- 29:03So it was really, you know, sometimes you lose focus of why you're doing it because you're so
- 29:08exhausted.
- 29:09I'm like, I don't wanna you know, I I just wanna be left alone, but that was part of it.
- 29:13Part of the whole thing.
- 29:14You know, you get people like Tim reminding me this is why we're doing it like, you know, we
- 29:17would fight with each other a bit on the RV, you know, and just over stupid stuff.
- 29:22I just want to rest and and Tim is very, very ADD, and he's just, like, constantly on you.
- 29:29Right?
- 29:29And he's,
- 29:29you
- 29:29know, running, you know, walking back and forth and don't realize that he's cooking the whole
- 29:34time or doing my laundry stuff that a lot of people don't wanna do.
- 29:37Right?
- 29:38What an amazing what an amazing thing though, Mike.
- 29:40You know, like, in all fairness, I knew a little bit about box run, but this this is a
- 29:44one of the amazing story because, you know, physically, like, obviously, you know what it
- 29:50is to tax your body and that and, you know, at some point, the mind takes over for you.
- 29:56And it's it you know, for the average person, like, you know, that's maybe listening to this,
- 30:01It's probably hard for them to understand what it takes, but it takes you go into a mental
- 30:05space that allows you to stay focused.
- 30:08Yeah.
- 30:08It it really did.
- 30:09And and it got really tough.
- 30:12We got to Winnipeg.
- 30:13We got gained more momentum and there was more people coming out and helping out because, you
- 30:18know, Tim had to leave who would bring other people on and and or or someone else would come
- 30:22out and help Tim.
- 30:24But when we got to Winnipeg, that was for where Terry Fox's family was from.
- 30:29And so the reaction from that Schools, and we were at City Hall, and Matteo went in.
- 30:35Matteo came in and he was like their little rock star.
- 30:38Curly hair like Terry Fox.
- 30:39We're on TV.
- 30:40Breakfast television, radio, and, he was great.
- 30:44Mateo was was amazing, and it was gaining a lot of momentum.
- 30:48It really was.
- 30:49And then, you know, a couple days there, and then, Matteo had to go back.
- 30:53And so now the next time we were gonna see him was in Regina.
- 30:58So we continued running and and, yeah, it started getting a lot of momentum boxing gyms,
- 31:03schools.
- 31:04Everybody wanted me there, and and it was was great.
- 31:06We're just telling the story of why I was doing this.
- 31:09Mhmm.
- 31:09And, got the brand in Manitoba, but I the mental part started getting really bad.
- 31:14So my buddy, Jack Ross, and came and he's from Niagara Lake, and he was doing a lot of the
- 31:20the, preparing for schools and social media stuff.
- 31:24He would be cooking and and stuff like that or driving the RV.
- 31:27And, got to one point.
- 31:29I had about 4 kilometers left to one day.
- 31:31I said, Jack, I said, get some shoes on, buddy.
- 31:35You're running with me, those last four.
- 31:36I'm by myself.
- 31:37It's killing me, being by myself.
- 31:39You know, it's almost too too much time to sink.
- 31:42You know what I mean?
- 31:42Running every day by yourself.
- 31:44You're driving yourself crazy.
- 31:46And, Jack's like, I don't have any shoes.
- 31:49I go with size.
- 31:49You're a size 9.
- 31:51I got 12 pairs there for people donating to me, and I'm size 9.
- 31:54You're getting a pair of shoes on.
- 31:56And at the time, I think he was 43.
- 31:58Not athletic.
- 32:00He smoked for almost 28 years.
- 32:05Well, he came out.
- 32:06He ran and almost killed him.
- 32:07He had to a run walk, run walk.
- 32:09He was and he do that almost every day to help me out the last 4 kilometers.
- 32:13They came up to 8 he was making more money than I was, doing the box run from friends because
- 32:18they couldn't believe this guy was running.
- 32:20And he quit smoking that day into this day.
- 32:23Wow.
- 32:24Yeah.
- 32:24Which is pretty amazing.
- 32:25So, you know, I think, I inspired him by, you know, getting him out and doing that.
- 32:30And then, you know, he inspired me by stop smoking.
- 32:33He knew we were out here for you know, childhood cancer research and, you know, to
- 32:39stop smoking is obviously a a big thing.
- 32:41Right?
- 32:42So to this day, since 2012, yeah, that cigarette.
- 32:45Wow.
- 32:46Wow.
- 32:46So you
- 32:47I mean, truly inspirational.
- 32:49Right?
- 32:49Because you're you're running because of kids that are developing catchers for a lot of
- 32:53different reasons, but we know that smoking is such, you know, it's a big thing that takes a
- 32:57lot of people's lives.
- 32:58So for him, just because you needed him, it it it created a shift.
- 33:03What what a what a gift that, was able to happen on on that experience.
- 33:07Well, it sounds like there was a lot of gifts that happened there, Mike.
- 33:10It was.
- 33:11Yeah.
- 33:11And and, you know, he did inspire me.
- 33:13We're doing that choose a lot of gum now.
- 33:14I know that, but he got this full.
- 33:17But after that, and and we were heading to, Saskatchewan.
- 33:21And Saskatchewan wasn't very good as far as, you know, media and stuff like that.
- 33:26And there's a lot of when you're we're running on the highway.
- 33:28So we get a little shoulder of the road big trucks going by and it was freezing and the
- 33:33wind going east to west.
- 33:35The wind is always in your always in your face.
- 33:39Always in your face, and it would feel like, you know, there was 90 kilometer winds in my
- 33:43face.
- 33:44And, you know, it was it was, really tough.
- 33:48And it just, you know, you're you feel like you're you're walking because it's so strong
- 33:53this win, and then you got trucks going by and splashing you and your mud and, you know, and
- 33:58then you have cities that, you know, were used to Niagara Falls Lincoln in the Saint
- 34:01Catherine's that's linked into another city.
- 34:03Well, there's 100 kilometers where there's no city.
- 34:06Just you and this RV in in the highway.
- 34:08And, you know, you'd stay in the RV some nights or in hotels.
- 34:11And, you know, at least I gotta look look forward to, Mateo come in Regina.
- 34:16And when we got to Regina, we got some horrible news.
- 34:21Matteo's mom phoned and says he can't Matteo can't come anymore.
- 34:24His, his cancer spread from his from his legs to his lungs.
- 34:29So they found, tumors in his lungs and, you know, the exactly the same as Terry Fox.
- 34:34So he wasn't coming back anymore, and I just met me and Tim, and it was just me and Tim at
- 34:39that point in time.
- 34:40And we're just falling our eyes.
- 34:42So and, we actually ended up going to a to a bar, and I remember having a few few beers, and
- 34:49we're drinking shots at Stambucca, and, crying.
- 34:54And I remember my my my one buddy handy the guy who came up with the box run the kind of logo
- 34:59and the ID says, you know, this is the reason why you wrote there for kids like Mateo.
- 35:03And, you know, so I'm crying at one point, I think the bartender thought me and Tim were
- 35:07breaking up because we're trying to get
- 35:08I thought that you're okay.
- 35:10Yeah.
- 35:11It was pretty comical, but I remember the next morning waking up and with a bad hangover and
- 35:16having to run and and Mhmm.
- 35:17Man, that was one of the toughest days for sure because I was running, and it was not nice out
- 35:22in, you know, in Not a lot of people were out and running down Saskatchewan, there's so much
- 35:27wind in my face and just crying and and looking up and just saying, you know, leave this kid
- 35:32alone.
- 35:33Know, you took his legs and now you spread it to his lungs, just give this kid a break.
- 35:37Well, Matteo phoned me, like, 2 days later, he was on switch spots here if you want.
- 35:40So it's one of those things.
- 35:42Oh, wow.
- 35:43I couldn't really quit.
- 35:44Right?
- 35:44So
- 35:45So that just gave you the extra mental, like, you know, and and, you know, I just think about
- 35:50And if and and and it was like those type of things when when I thought, you know, maybe I
- 35:55can't do it or I feel like quitting that you'd get a call it's just something that happened.
- 36:00That's like, okay.
- 36:01Well, now I got this boost.
- 36:02You know what I mean?
- 36:03So, you know, I I listen and I'm I'm inspired you know, just listening to what you're saying
- 36:08because, you know, so much too many of us have gone through stuff.
- 36:11Right?
- 36:12Like you said, we've all gone through stuff or people that are listening now are going through
- 36:16stuff.
- 36:17They will go through stuff.
- 36:18If you're not going through it yourself, somebody else you know is going through it.
- 36:22You're losing a child or lost a child.
- 36:24I mean, devastating.
- 36:26Right?
- 36:27But what I hear is that, you know, you just have done things that have, cut through, a lot
- 36:35of things to enable you to be able to, to give the gift of, a voice to these children that,
- 36:41you know, that are losing their lives, which is what would you say to someone saying that is
- 36:47going through a tough time right now, Mike, and they're thinking, I I don't know.
- 36:51You know, I I don't know how I'm gonna I don't know if I'm gonna literally put one foot in
- 36:55front of you know, of each other, whether it's a child listening or a teen or a parent, what
- 37:00would you say to them?
- 37:02Well, you know, we always, you know, on on part of our keywords, you know, and a few of the
- 37:07flags is hope, and that there are hope in it.
- 37:10There is hope out there, and and we've I've seen it with children who, you know, one makes
- 37:15it and one doesn't, unfortunately, but the the the treatment is getting better.
- 37:21You know, unfortunately, it's not getting fast enough Mhmm.
- 37:25There is a treatment that are in that's in the states, you know, these T cell therapy and and
- 37:31the stem cell research is really, really helping out with, with the child to cancer.
- 37:37You know, but there are certain, certain, cancers that really haven't hasn't gone and
- 37:45improved like osteosarcoma, which is one of the the tough cancers, the bone cancer for for
- 37:50children, and you know, it's, you know, we have a few Niagara Falls that are that are going
- 37:54through it.
- 37:55And, it's really tough.
- 37:57It really, really is, and but there are there is support.
- 38:01And, you know, we there's different, I know, wellspring here in Niagara really helps to
- 38:06families, Ronald McDonald's one of our cherries that we give to in in, in Hamilton is just
- 38:13amazing.
- 38:13You know, you know, you think of the, you know, the the burden, obviously, of having someone
- 38:18sick, whether cancer, any illness, and and it's a child.
- 38:22And, you know, now you gotta pay for parking, you gotta look for a place to stay because
- 38:27there's always somebody gotta has to stay with filed at the hospital.
- 38:30Yeah.
- 38:30We're a little hot, the bed.
- 38:32And so, you know, to give us some relief from the families where they can park for free
- 38:36around McDonald's, and it just steps away from McMaster, and they stay for $13 a night, which
- 38:42is Wow.
- 38:43And they're they're not funded through government So it's up to, you know, myself,
- 38:48which I thought it was a a a great, charity to give to.
- 38:52And it's amazing.
- 38:53And and I know so many children that have stayed there in their families and it really,
- 38:58really, takes a burden off and especially, financially, you know,
- 39:04So so, you know, the box run has now been around for a long time.
- 39:09And for people, you know, wanting to connect or, you know, and you're you I feel remiss in
- 39:17not knowing the entirety of your story.
- 39:19What an amazing story, my
- 39:21I could
- 39:21be I've known you now for how long.
- 39:24Mike lived down the street from my husband and I, like, 25 years ago, and, you know, he would
- 39:29run-in my ex would attempt to run quite poorly with the Olympic boxer.
- 39:34So I've known Mike a very long time, and I'm amazed that you'd, you know, I know you did big
- 39:38things, but, you know, as an Olympian, that's phenomenal, obviously, and you've put Niagara
- 39:42on the map.
- 39:43But with this, like, wow, it just makes my heart, you know, just feel so much more
- 39:50privileged to to have known you, but also think that here we here in Little Niagara has
- 39:54somebody like you that has such a big, big heart to be able to give back and based on,
- 40:00heater in your connection, right, like someone that
- 40:04It all it all stems from heater and then meeting these kids.
- 40:07And you know, so I I finished the first run 2012, and unfortunately, the tail wasn't there
- 40:12at the end, but I did dip my leg in the Pacific Ocean.
- 40:15And then, you know, Matteo passed away shortly after, which was, May 8th on 2013.
- 40:22And then I made a promise to him a year to his anniversary of his passing that.
- 40:26I would run the other way.
- 40:27So I ended up, you know, since
- 40:28Oh, wow.
- 40:29Called, which was 94 minutes.
- 40:31I was 94 days.
- 40:32I kinda do something every 2 years.
- 40:34And then, you know, 2 years later in 2016, myself, and, another counselor, Vic Peter
- 40:40Angelo, and Mike D.
- 40:40Cienzo and John Vretresca, we tempted to climb the mat or horn.
- 40:44And then and then just the last couple months ago in 2018, did the box on El Camino, which
- 40:51was just amazing trail in Spain and and, you know, I didn't know what I was gonna do, and
- 40:56it's kinda last minute.
- 40:58You know, so I I would run every day and dedicate the same to to a child and did it for
- 41:03child to cancer awareness months.
- 41:05Mhmm.
- 41:05And I remember talking to my sister.
- 41:07And I said, Diane, I said, I need I wanna put all these children that I'm gonna run for every
- 41:12day starting September 1st December 30th.
- 41:14And you know, I wonder if we're gonna have their well, we had 40 children.
- 41:18Oh, wow.
- 41:18There's no 40 children in the Niagara region that has been touched by cancer.
- 41:23And, you know, it's it's crazy.
- 41:25So we had to double up on a couple days, and but I gave all the flags to the children and
- 41:29still have a few.
- 41:30I have to give to the families, but the most important thing, I think, was just to tell the
- 41:34kids stories every day to tell these kids.
- 41:38Some can't tell because they have passed away or the parents don't wanna you know, it's tough
- 41:43for them.
- 41:43And the, you know, the only way they get through it sometimes is like, Lana Hill is they
- 41:49have a legacy for Kelsey and they and they every day, they do something and and raising
- 41:54money so to help other children.
- 41:56But then there's there's children, like, Nick Roma.
- 41:59And Nick Roma is gone.
- 42:01I I actually know of Nick.
- 42:02I know of Nick Roma through someone else, but, you know, I've heard his story.
- 42:07Yes.
- 42:07Yeah.
- 42:08Nick's lost all his limbs.
- 42:09Yes.
- 42:10Yes.
- 42:10People need to hear this story.
- 42:11And and, you know, I've had a couple people, the parents, and you're saying, the one year
- 42:16little girl, Brooklyn.
- 42:17She goes, she wants to tell her story.
- 42:19She's so young.
- 42:20Tell her story and to do inspirational talks to people and and give other children hope
- 42:25Well, absolutely.
- 42:26It was so important
- 42:26that we can't forget about these kids, who have passed away or the kids that that have beaten
- 42:31cancer.
- 42:32They need that people need to hear their stories.
- 42:34And if and if I can help in that way and tell their story and tell they're able to tell
- 42:38themselves, I'm more than happy to do that.
- 42:40Oh, absolutely.
- 42:41It's an amazing thing.
- 42:42And then what they've gone through and what they've had to cope with and, you know, how
- 42:46they stay positive, like you said.
- 42:48Right?
- 42:48Like, how how they mentally at whatever age they are, and so I know some of the ones can be
- 42:53quite young, what they have to do to do their part, to do as pos be as positive as they can
- 42:58be, even though the children, which is a big thing.
- 43:00Right?
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:01It's, it's unreal and you and you look at these these kids and I, you know, I go up and and and
- 43:07I've sought seen some of the kids that run McDonald's house or McMaster, and I know some
- 43:11of them, and I talked to them.
- 43:12And, and they're so pot live.
- 43:15Unbelievable, they can they'll go and have they'll go through chemo treatment, and they'll
- 43:18come out and they'll have a smile on their face, and they're playing with the toy.
- 43:21And I was like, wow.
- 43:23Yeah.
- 43:23The power of the power of being in the moment as a child.
- 43:26Right?
- 43:26Oh, it
- 43:27just Yeah.
- 43:27Regardless of what's going on.
- 43:29Yeah.
- 43:29And, of course, you
- 43:30know, they don't know what healthy feels some of these children.
- 43:32They think Yeah.
- 43:33Feeling sick like that is healthy.
- 43:35Right.
- 43:36Do you think that's the owner?
- 43:37And, you know, I think, you know, I and I remember watching Mateo taking 40 pills at a
- 43:42time.
- 43:43And I'm just like, I'm crying about taking one little pill that hurts my stomach, and I'm just
- 43:46like, man, this this little warrior is just taking all these pills, and it's just, yep, I'm
- 43:50taking a Unbelievable.
- 43:52Really is.
- 43:53So, Mike, you know, I, I'm inspired and I, you know, for everybody listening, I want to know
- 44:00where they can go, where they can donate, and also for you speaking, to share the story.
- 44:06I mean, amazing, amazing stuff.
- 44:08And I feel like I, you know, didn't know enough of it, but I'm inspired now.
- 44:13And in any way, and I wanna say this out here that if any of those families ever need
- 44:17support, I'm here in Niagara, and I can support any of those families as a a registered family
- 44:24therapist or a couples therapist, pro bono.
- 44:27I will assist in any way.
- 44:29So if you ever come across that, that I will, through you, be able to do anything I can to
- 44:35assist because, obviously, it's a hard crushing thing to lose a child or to go through the
- 44:41stresses of being a couple or to, you know, when, even when the child passes away, to be
- 44:46able to reintegrate that family to law.
- 44:48So that's something I would hope that I could, you know, get back to you and, thanks
- 44:52so much.
- 44:53That that would be amazing.
- 44:54And, you know, that that is people go to go on after a child.
- 44:58And that's the worst thing in the world.
- 44:59I can't imagine anything worse than the world than losing a child.
- 45:03And it's, like, a normal life, like, okay.
- 45:06I mean, it's it's impossible.
- 45:07So the the support, needs to be there that we can, you know, even the mental part of it then.
- 45:13You know?
- 45:13Absolutely.
- 45:14Absolutely.
- 45:14So I'm available.
- 45:15So you you know how to get ahold of me.
- 45:17So tell people how they can get ahold of you if, you know, you need to speak more.
- 45:22I I'm gonna tell you.
- 45:23I'm I have to speak more, Mike.
- 45:25I'm telling you from the bottom of my heart.
- 45:27That you have to get the story out there.
- 45:29I'm, you know, I belong.
- 45:31I'm now a professional speaker in Canada, and I that this message that you are sharing needs to
- 45:37get out there, across Canada.
- 45:39And, even in, you know, Internationally, because I think it's an inspiration for so many
- 45:44people that would give up.
- 45:47Right?
- 45:47And, you know, whether it's cancer or whether it's going through a difficult time because of
- 45:51different things in our lives, that story to learn about resilience, which is what this is
- 45:55about resilience and connection.
- 45:57You made your friend put your shoes on because you knew that mentally, you're gonna go crazy
- 46:02if you did Get there.
- 46:04Right?
- 46:04Within my own mind.
- 46:05Yeah.
- 46:06Right.
- 46:06And then and then you get the positive because then on top of that, he's quit smoking.
- 46:10You see, So the positivity that you put out there in the world, you know, has come back and
- 46:15now you're helping all these, families and these children.
- 46:18I can imagine what it must do to a child that knows that you're running for them that day.
- 46:22Like, what they must be brimming to know that somebody out there is doing this for them and
- 46:29and then them wanting to tell the story that you're doing that for them.
- 46:32So
- 46:34It was a pleasure.
- 46:35It really was.
- 46:36And if anyone would like to to, to donate or get a hold of me, just go to boxrun, dot org
- 46:41and, if you'd like me to come and and speak, and I I would be more than happy to, to share
- 46:47my story and share the children's stories.
- 46:50Awesome.
- 46:50Well, Michael, it's, it's been amazing.
- 46:52I, feel privileged to have, spent this time because I know you and I see each other, like,
- 46:57in passing sometimes in our defaults.
- 46:59See you when you're at council meetings on on TV and stuff like that.
- 47:03That's about it, but I'll I'll make sure to try to reach out to you more.
- 47:07So for everybody listening, I I guess I'm struck, by I talk about being authentic, and I
- 47:15think Mike Mike has shown that you know, when you are truly connected to who you are and you
- 47:20connect to other people on a profound level, amazing things happen.
- 47:23And, this through the box run is an example of something like that, and a a legacy that you're
- 47:30leaving behind that nobody can ever ever take away.
- 47:34And This idea got birth in in Mike through a connection, and the importance of us being
- 47:41connected not just ourselves, based on whatever we're going through in the world, but also to
- 47:46others is the thing that affords us to be resilient.
- 47:49So, again, Mike, thanks so much for being here.
- 47:51And do reach out to Mike and the Bob So it's voxron.org.
