- 0:19Sloan Paiva I did Sloan Paiva will join us at the bottom of
- 0:23the hour to talk NBA Vinny Iyer right now Sporting News joins us
- 0:27to recap the draft maybe take a sneak peek ahead to like next
- 0:31year's. I looked at Vinny's markup ready
- 0:33for 2027. Four quarterbacks in the in the
- 0:37top 10 Vinny Trenton Ken thank you for finding a few minutes
- 0:41for us appreciated the lack of quarterbacks Vinny.
- 0:44I've seen some of the ratings that have felt they weren't bad
- 0:46by any means, but quarterbacks, even in the draft, move the
- 0:50needle, don't they? And if we do get the, you know,
- 0:53the run on QBs, like a lot of people anticipate next year,
- 0:56maybe even more eyeballs will be on the event than there were
- 0:59this year. How about that?
- 1:01Yeah, you can call me anything. Just don't call me Diego.
- 1:05Yeah, really. Yeah.
- 1:06Headed to the CFL. Absolutely, but that's about it.
- 1:11Yeah, He won't be going in next year's draft either, by the way.
- 1:14That's true. But yeah, looking at the
- 1:17quarterback class, we're trying to sort out who are the guys
- 1:21right now. I mean, it's all over the board.
- 1:23I mean, there's some they're looking at DJ Lagway maybe
- 1:27having a breakout season for Baylor.
- 1:29You got traded at Chambliss returning to school.
- 1:32I think those are wild cards that could easily rise up the
- 1:35boards. Definitely a lot of different
- 1:39options right now. But again, you think Dante Moore
- 1:42returning school, Arch Manning returning school, I think
- 1:44Manning, Moore would be your top prospects right now than
- 1:48throwing Julian Sane of Ohio State.
- 1:51I mean, I think he'll continue to improve this season.
- 1:55I know he's a Heisman finalist there, but I think there's still
- 1:59room for him to get better all around.
- 2:01So I think those are the three that I would feel the most
- 2:04confident about going at some point in the first round.
- 2:08So and CJ Carr, I think another guy that you look at where I
- 2:12think the skill set, the boxes are there where he could have a
- 2:15big season at Notre Dame and be their first, first round
- 2:21position. So there's some intriguing
- 2:23players, especially in the big in the original Big 10 country.
- 2:27You know, real quick before we get to 1 more on next year and
- 2:30then we're going to recap. But Brendan Sarsby, if he
- 2:33doesn't play and it's looking man, I'd, I'd be surprised at
- 2:37this point if the NCAA gives him a thumbs up, especially when he
- 2:41did bet on, you know, his own team yesterday, bet him to win.
- 2:43But still, it's pretty cut and dried seemingly.
- 2:46If Sarsby doesn't play this year, he seemingly A fringe
- 2:50first rounder, second rounder type of guy.
- 2:52How will NFL teams view him? Do you think Vinny?
- 2:55Yeah, I think NFL teams are not going to worry about the
- 2:59gambling aspect, but they are a little bit because it comes with
- 3:01a long suspension as we've seen with Calvin Ridley, even doing
- 3:05any kind of gambling activity, not necessarily with your own
- 3:08team, but that'll be a little bit of a red flag that this is a
- 3:13pretty common thing right now and you have to be able to
- 3:15figure it out and it's just a no brainer.
- 3:18So that might you pause with his judgment or decision making in
- 3:25that sense. And did that go in the direction
- 3:28but not physically talented. I think the biggest problem is
- 3:31if he can't play, how's he going to show those wares?
- 3:34I'm sure there's somewhere somehow there's a place he could
- 3:38play out there and at least take reps or do something.
- 3:42But I just don't think that helps your stock if you don't
- 3:46get on the field because a lot of these guys that have shot up
- 3:49the board, I mean, we didn't see Fernando Mendoza going that high
- 3:52or Tie Simpson, right? They do it because they were on
- 3:55the field and playing and they had a lot of good tape with a
- 3:58good supporting cast and all squirrel the intangible.
- 4:01So I think it's really hard. I think you go back to the
- 4:03Treyland situation had that year, I think that kind of hurt
- 4:07its momentum of playing like and then you didn't see the same
- 4:11prospect since then. And his teams I think went for
- 4:15his upside. Obviously one team did in San
- 4:17Francisco, but there just was not enough there to say I'm
- 4:22comfortable with his upside, right, if he doesn't play.
- 4:25So I I think it's this changed the game totally, especially
- 4:29with the quarterback. Vinny, to the 2026 draft and
- 4:32what we saw over the weekend, I want to go towards the bottom of
- 4:35your list as you graded each and every team and number, not 32,
- 4:39that's the Rams, but here locally, the Vikings at #31 AC
- 4:43minus grade for them. And, you know, maybe there's a
- 4:46reason you don't want to go with an interim GM.
- 4:49I understand after firing Quessy, there was a lot of
- 4:52questions. How quickly can you pull it
- 4:53together? But what they did in this one
- 4:56just led to a whole lot of head scratching.
- 4:58Fielman, who everybody loved the fit Harrison Smith replacement.
- 5:02They don't take him at 19. Instead, they take an off
- 5:04injured guy at that spot. Just it was difficult to
- 5:07understand even the rhyme and reasoning behind what the
- 5:09Vikings were doing over your thoughts on that?
- 5:12And a very talented roster. Not a very good draft it feels
- 5:15like on the surface. Yeah, I don't know what they
- 5:18were doing and it's hard to know.
- 5:20This team is a bit in limbo, right?
- 5:21The Gigio McCarthy picked expressed with that.
- 5:23Tyler Murray, you don't know if that's going to pan out with
- 5:26Kevin O'Connell, if the system is going to help Murray or
- 5:29Murray had some other issues that were keeping him from
- 5:32ascending as a quarterback the way we thought he would after
- 5:37promising started the number one pick in 19.
- 5:39So look at this situation. I don't know what to make of the
- 5:43Vikings. I mean, their defense is pretty
- 5:46good, but then you move a player like Jonathan Bernard, you need
- 5:50help on the back end. So I think they were trying to
- 5:53reload maybe their defense. I think The funny thing is, you
- 5:57know, for Kevin O'Connell and Justin Jefferson, but this team
- 6:00has really become the defensive team.
- 6:02They really depend on their defense forcing turnovers to
- 6:06make because again, the running game is still work in progress.
- 6:09They didn't really attack that. I thought you might do that a
- 6:12little bit more. They're just still on there.
- 6:15Jones and Jordan Mason, they did get a late back who could be
- 6:19good and Devon Claiborne, but in laid back, it'd be more than
- 6:24just a limited role early. If there's injuries, you're not
- 6:27going to get that same result. I thought they might go after
- 6:30generic Price, but then of course he was not on board at
- 6:33all in the second round. So it's a lot of head scratching
- 6:38there also because you know, kind of you can see the
- 6:41blueprint if you look at Detroit, Oregon, Chicago, Greek
- 6:44Bay, you know exactly what those teams are doing and to move
- 6:47forward, especially with the quarterback question, right?
- 6:49Jared Duff, Jordan Love, Kayla Williams, those teams have
- 6:53answers, right? The Vikings don't have the
- 6:56answer of the position most need.
- 6:58The running game is a question mark.
- 6:59How do you get Justin Jefferson going again?
- 7:01So I think in relation to those three other teams, especially
- 7:06the division being so competitive, it's really hard to
- 7:08keep up if you make a few lapses in the draft.
- 7:12Vinny is, and I think I can speak for the Chargers, the
- 7:16Chiefs and the Broncos fans here that we like the Raiders being
- 7:20as inept as they were. I get the sense that maybe the
- 7:23adults are now in charge in Las Vegas.
- 7:26It seems like I loved their offseason.
- 7:29I'd like, I thought they crushed the draft this past weekend.
- 7:33I don't think that the Raiders, I'm not saying that this year
- 7:35they're going to claw their way out of the basement, But I think
- 7:38the days of the Raiders kind of being one of the laughingstocks
- 7:42and glad that they're in the division, that the team you for
- 7:45happens to reside in, I think those days might be coming to an
- 7:49end. The Raiders seem to be, you
- 7:51know, catching on to life in the NFL finally.
- 7:55Yeah, and some things are just your stuff with the owners,
- 7:57right? I mean, look what happened.
- 7:58The Commanders, they flipped the from Daniel Snyder.
- 8:02They had a person committed to winning.
- 8:04That person also was bringing the draft in Washington and just
- 8:09creating better buzz with that organization.
- 8:10I mean, you totally look at them differently now.
- 8:12Dave Daniels and what they can do here.
- 8:15One team is still being found out for The Jets kind of gets
- 8:22out of the way and doesn't medal as much.
- 8:25Jerry Jones is a little bit different because he's been
- 8:28playing for a while with that one and one.
- 8:31But using the Raiders, they've been trying to get in their own
- 8:34way. They've been trying to pop
- 8:36things together, trying to make green happening and Joshua
- 8:40Daniels taking a shot where a lot of people failed.
- 8:42Going after Pete Carroll lead and Chip Kelly experiment.
- 8:46Now they seem sane, right? Go after the hot coordinator
- 8:48that's there a lot on offense. Get the number one overall pick
- 8:51a quarterback, give him help. We get more competent people
- 8:56owning the team, including the GOAT quarterback as part of the
- 9:00thing. So I just think they're just
- 9:03that's flipping the page. And again, unfortunately a lot
- 9:07of this is tied. A lot of these teams are not
- 9:10winning to not just the coach and players, but things are
- 9:13going on upstairs and I think they finally figured that out a
- 9:16little bit better. It was incredibly odd to have
- 9:18the Chiefs with a top ten pick and it moved up to a number six
- 9:21pick after they moved up to get Delane.
- 9:24Your thoughts on what Kansas City did?
- 9:25Peter Woods, if you can find a way to ignite that guy,
- 9:28certainly know the talent is there.
- 9:30And Emma Johnson, we saw a ton of him at Nebraska.
- 9:33Fun piece in the backfield to go along with Kenneth Walker.
- 9:35Your thoughts on what KC did? Yeah, I mean, the way that Casey
- 9:39approached the draft is saying, hey, we had it down here,
- 9:42Patrick, my homes got hurt. But the way they drafted is
- 9:45like, hey, Travis, Kelsey came back, Mahomes looks like you'll
- 9:48be out in the field sooner rather than later.
- 9:50They approached it like they were just up there with the AFC
- 9:55contenders last year, right? Let's reload a corner, use that
- 9:58pick that you had with Trent Mcduffie, maybe get a younger
- 10:03upgrade there. Peter Woods getting that second
- 10:06pick to really give Christian some support he's needed upfront
- 10:10for a while. Kind of reboot some of that
- 10:13stuff upfront. I think they also got a little
- 10:15bit of edge help there. Our Mason Thomas can at least
- 10:18help them situationally and help George Carlotta.
- 10:21So good did really load up for Steve Spagnolo like we also
- 10:25Garrett Nussmeyer pick later. You need to develop a backup.
- 10:29You've been going revolving door with Carson Wentz and Gardner
- 10:34Minshew. Justin Fields, I don't think is
- 10:36their type of backup long term. I think he's a short term fix
- 10:39because some case notes are ready.
- 10:41So thus Meyer would seem to be a guy that you can develop to be a
- 10:44long term backup, which they need from a home.
- 10:46So given last year with an injury.
- 10:48So I do like their draft quite a bit, but it's really telling.
- 10:52I think the way these teams draft and the positions they go
- 10:56after, they really are hinting are we playing for now or we
- 10:59playing for later. I think most teams, however,
- 11:02lead on now because of the turnarounds that you see of the
- 11:04Patriots, Seahawks, Those were not possible without big drafts
- 11:08last. Year the Rams.
- 11:10The Rams rather saw the total opposite.
- 11:12If I'm a veteran player on the Los Angeles Rams or the head
- 11:15coach and Sean, I get why McVeigh was pissed.
- 11:18I really do. Stafford, This might be his last
- 11:21year. the Super Bowls at your building, for crying out loud.
- 11:24Get him some help. They went and took a guy.
- 11:26There's no way in hell Ty Simpson's going to help this
- 11:28team win this year. I would be pissed if I was as a
- 11:32veteran on this Rams team. My my career is coming to an
- 11:35end. I don't have many chances left
- 11:37and they dropped the draft. The guy that has no impact on
- 11:40this roster this year, I hated what the Rams did.
- 11:43And Simpson, hell he may end up in Canton one year but I would
- 11:47still Pooh Pooh this pic down the road.
- 11:49I didn't like what they did. Vinnie, how about you?
- 11:52So is Ty Simpson taking a vacation to Ohio this summer?
- 11:56I think that's the way that's the way he's going.
- 12:00Yeah. Maybe he visit Akron and tired
- 12:02Rubber while you're there, whatever, visit the museum.
- 12:06But when you look at it, I mean, maybe he's going to visit
- 12:08Matthew Stafford when he's there at the Trineman ceremony several
- 12:13years from now. But when you look at this
- 12:17situation, yeah, I think the Rams felt like maybe they're
- 12:21overconfident that they're set right with the Trev Mcduffie
- 12:24trade, getting John Watson. They might be like, hey, we love
- 12:27our roster and they do have some reason to feel that way.
- 12:31But still, why would you waste a pick?
- 12:33You still have the 13th pick. You can get this quarterback,
- 12:36developmental quarterback of Belt in another class that's
- 12:39going to be more promising or wait till the second round.
- 12:42Ty Simpson, is not there a big deal Like you just got to one of
- 12:45these other guys who developed like the Chiefs said, really
- 12:49this draft and I think thus Meyer and Simpson, like to me
- 12:52when healthy, there wasn't that much difference between them,
- 12:55You know, So I look at this and say, hey, the Rams may be a
- 12:59little bit overconfident what kind of roster they have.
- 13:03I get it. The secondary was the thing that
- 13:06kept them high out of the Super Bowl and winning it if you look
- 13:09at it overall. But you got to keep improving
- 13:13your team. You don't know where you might
- 13:14need key depth at any point, right?
- 13:17A playmaker that could come off an edge rusher, somebody you
- 13:21never know is going to have an important role in your team,
- 13:24especially on the defensive side.
- 13:25So I think they could have done that and maybe even like gone
- 13:28wide receiver there just because look, look at the cool you think
- 13:32he's going to be OK and play. But Demonta Adams is getting
- 13:35older a field it doesn't look like it's going to just snap his
- 13:39fingers and change things, right the way it's going.
- 13:41So I would have maybe looked at a wide receiver because at least
- 13:45that player could have contributed as like a #3 type
- 13:48player, slot player, even if you had the Niku and Adams in it.
- 13:52Makai Lemon perfect fit. Yes, I didn't understand it.
- 13:56And Full disclosure, Ken has a lot of futures on the Rams, and
- 13:59that's also recent. Well, true, but he's very fired
- 14:02up about this one. Want to go to the Packers next?
- 14:05A very boring draft, but you. Don't have a pick?
- 14:09Yeah. You don't have a first rounder
- 14:11and a lot of defensive lineman. Lotta just not a whole lot.
- 14:15What? No skill position players in
- 14:17fact that were drafted out of them but they got a kicker trace
- 14:19back. What a name that guy is.
- 14:21The Packers. The very boring Green Bay.
- 14:24Like it felt like draft outside of going out and getting golden
- 14:26a year ago. Yeah, Look, the Packers, I think
- 14:31this is not surprising. I mean, Michael Parsons deal did
- 14:35come with a high cost to consider Michael Parsons part of
- 14:39this draft class, but it is expensive when you go after that
- 14:42type of player. And the other thing about the
- 14:45Packers, look, they're trying to figure out their defense again,
- 14:47just halfway. Did a good job there in a couple
- 14:50of years, but he had to move on. He was too good, right?
- 14:53He had to get a job somewhere. So now you're got Jonathan's
- 14:57Gannon coming in. And look, Gannon, some people
- 15:01liked him in Philadelphia, some did not.
- 15:03And then he had that short tender in Arizona.
- 15:05So I think he's going to be a good influence on the defense.
- 15:08I think they needed reinforcements.
- 15:11I think ideally they would have got D'Angelo Ponds, but he was
- 15:13not there. But I do like the Brandon CC
- 15:16pick because again, I I think they needed some help inside
- 15:20play making. It seems like a lot of these
- 15:22teams are the corners. Like I think it, it follows that
- 15:25a lot of teams are drafting wide receivers like crazy to have 1-2
- 15:29three. Makes a lot of sense that you
- 15:31value drafting corners to have 1-2 three as well.
- 15:34And I think that's what they did because you got to have the
- 15:37support on the back end no matter what kind of pass rush
- 15:40you have. Last thing, Vinny Ire from The
- 15:42Sporting News has been our guest.
- 15:43Vinny, we've covered three of the four regional teams.
- 15:46We've got to talk about the Bears loved what they did,
- 15:49particularly picks one their first, second and third picks in
- 15:52the draft. Logan Jones we saw at Iowa major
- 15:55edition. I don't know if they needed the
- 15:57tight end, they got one. But the safety Teineman, I think
- 16:00he's going to be a hell of a player.
- 16:02I really, really do. And I'm again, if you're a
- 16:04Vikings fan, you're just going to scratch your head as you
- 16:06watch him play the Vikings twice a year, every year, of your
- 16:11thoughts on the Bears, of any we'll let you go.
- 16:14Yeah, and I think what you get is kind of what you were having
- 16:18there, right? I think This is why they can
- 16:19afford to let all those safeties go because basically you get
- 16:23Kevin Bayard, who's older, and I know he led the league in
- 16:26interceptions, but he's on the older side, the end of his
- 16:29career. New England, I think, could plug
- 16:31and play him as a team. That's like right there.
- 16:34But for Chicago, I think they need a little bit more upsided
- 16:36safety and they got it. I mean, this kid is going to
- 16:39make up for what they lost, really.
- 16:41I mean, Jaquan Brisker and Johnson also leaving, but I
- 16:46think they're in good shape with him making plays, which can be
- 16:48seamless. They get those turnovers and
- 16:50then but I see what the Ben Johnson picks with tight end and
- 16:53wide receiver. I think he's bit the kind of the
- 16:57newer school Mike Marks where he's a bit of a mad scientist
- 17:01and you give him some extra pieces, right?
- 17:03His kind of pieces. I don't think DJ Moore was his
- 17:06kind of piece, right? So I think getting these extra
- 17:10tight ends, he wants to run 13 personnel, 12 personnel.
- 17:13I think you're going to see a lot of this 13 personnel start
- 17:16to creep up in the NFL is a trend here because at 12:13, the
- 17:21two tight ends, the three tight ends, look, if teams are
- 17:24building their teams too, As I just mentioned, cover 3 wide
- 17:27receivers. If you mix it up and put three
- 17:29tight ends on the field, then all these defenses are out of
- 17:32place. So it's kind of interesting how
- 17:34that goes. But watch out for those two guys
- 17:37the tight end wide receiver having some impact on.
- 17:40Vinny Ayer from the Sporting News Vinny, appreciate you
- 17:43helping us break this thing down from the weekend.
- 17:45Fun time schedule be released will be the next big check mark.
- 17:49I guess on our way to football again pre season August and then
- 17:53into September. Vinny, thank you man.
- 17:55Appreciate you coming on. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 17:57Thank you. Yep.
- 17:58Thanks guys. Yep.
- 17:59See a video ire from The Sporting News Three time
- 18:02Jeopardy champ or two? Three I think 3 I believe yes.
- 18:05Northwestern Grass. We got a super champion
- 18:07happening right now in jeopardy, up over 30 days.
- 18:10Fill me in. Approaching $1,000,000 in
- 18:13winnings for Jamie. He is boring.
- 18:17He is weird. He is.
- 18:20A lot of smart guys are like that.
- 18:22And gals, yeah. Six weeks now of this guy that
- 18:25has the so is. He blood is it?
- 18:27Is it boring to watch 'cause you and your wife watch?
- 18:29This every night you and Terra watch?
- 18:30Yep. I Yeah, it's boring.
- 18:33No personality. What was the guy's name before
- 18:36Ken? Something that drew the one?
- 18:37All those. Well, Ken Jennings is.
- 18:39Oh, he's the. Host now right but he he was a
- 18:41contestant that. Crush Yeah 75.
- 18:43Time winner 75. 75 time winner. 75 time winner.
- 18:47We saw James Householder, the I remember that guy poker player
- 18:51who had personality and he bet it all and say he's going all in
- 18:54like, you know. And he is full time sports
- 18:57gambling now, right? Or in the gambling.
- 18:59He is in the gambling space, Yep, a poker player and does
- 19:02does a lot in sports wagering, a lot of the analytical kind of
- 19:07parts of that. So there's been some fun ones.
- 19:10Is Ken Jennings the greatest Jeopardy champ of all time?
- 19:13Yes, now people will say some different champions that have
- 19:16been in there in the past, but it's got to be Ken.
- 19:19Jennings So why do you enter watches?
- 19:21Did you try and get the question first or get the answer first?
- 19:25No, it's just kind of something. To the question first, right?
- 19:27Because I give you the answer. Yes, I give you the answer.
- 19:29Yes. Just something to wind down the
- 19:30day. All right?
- 19:31Use your mind a little bit. We've been also doing the
- 19:35puzzles from New York Times, different puzzles that they
- 19:37have. Yeah, just trying to do
- 19:39something to keep that mind going.
- 19:40I mean, you talk about this a lot.
- 19:42What was that pill that pissed you off because it doesn't do
- 19:44anything? Yeah.
- 19:46Yeah, right. The outcomes broadcasts, you
- 19:51were fired up about that. Well, there's, there's no
- 19:53studies that say works. Look, if there was a study that
- 19:57could make you not lose any brain power and then came up
- 20:00with the pill, you know how? Long the line would be.
- 20:03Oh, absolutely. There was nothing behind that
- 20:05one. Just something to jog the memory
- 20:07a little bit and that's maybe. I need to take Prevagen.
- 20:10I couldn't remember what the bill was called.
- 20:12You were fired up that day. You must have read some article
- 20:15that Really. Well, I thought I found the the
- 20:17smoking gun, right. This silver bullet is to 'cause
- 20:19my mom died of it also and apparently there's one one of
- 20:22the of her children and there's four of us.
- 20:26Sadly, he's going to be inflicted with it.
- 20:29It's. Terrible.
- 20:30It's awful, awful. I remember my great grandma
- 20:33going through that and just it's painful.
- 20:35It's to converse and everything else.
- 20:38So completely understand that angle to it, but.
- 20:40I'll never forget why the last time I went home, I couldn't go
- 20:43home again. Right or wrong.
- 20:46When I when I went to my mom, where she was staying, and I
- 20:48knocked on the door and she answered the door and she looked
- 20:51at me and I, I don't know who you are.
- 20:55Yeah, that's tell her oldest child, right?
- 21:00It was awful. Anyways, everybody that has
- 21:03effects so sadly way way way too many people. 125 time for a
- 21:08keyword. Not going to forget to do that
- 21:11this hours. I did last hour.
- 21:14Head to KX and o.com or whatever your station website happens to
- 21:18be. Once you get there, a pop up box
- 21:21will appear. You can type in the keyword
- 21:23media media at KX and o.com media@kx&o.com or whatever your
- 21:28station's website is. You can use KX and o.com Media
- 21:32is the keyword. It's your chance to win $1000 in
- 21:35this nationwide contest. Let's dip our toe into NBA
- 21:39waters on the other side of this.
- 21:40Miller and Condon glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:44Network. I'm Miller Condon, 130 Iowa
- 21:56Sports Radio Network, Sloan Piva Momentarily Athlon Sports For
- 22:01Sloan. We'll do some NBA with him.
- 22:03So just real quick before we go to Sloan, I've got a betting
- 22:07opportunity for you tonight. I'm all ears.
- 22:10I know you are maybe not the most up and up, you know, most
- 22:14up on the level. Well, so sometimes you got to
- 22:17find an angle, right? Well, the angle could be and
- 22:20it's betting against your wife when it comes to this topic.
- 22:22So I the phone was ringing during the break and I see our
- 22:25Twitter starting to light up a little bit as well.
- 22:27So you watching Jeopardy, you're a day behind.
- 22:30We are that. Guy that has won thirty in a row
- 22:33Jamie Jamie yeah Jamie gets beat so the episode you're going to
- 22:36watch tonight OK yeah Jamie goes down in flames so put a big
- 22:40wager out of my. Life.
- 22:41Yeah, baby you. I get to watch whatever I want
- 22:44this weekend or. Absolutely.
- 22:45Hey, you got to, you got to clean the toilets.
- 22:47Yeah, sure. You're folding clothes?
- 22:48Yeah. Absolutely.
- 22:49We'll find something to put on it tonight.
- 22:50Yep. I got a feeling that she'll know
- 22:53something self. Do you think she will?
- 22:55She'll sniff it out right away. Well, it's not.
- 22:58It's worth a shot. But it's worth a shot.
- 22:59Worth a shot. I like how you're thinking
- 23:01there. You go Sloan Piva.
- 23:03Hello, Sloan Piva. Good to talk to you, NBA.
- 23:05The beat rolls on. How are you?
- 23:08Gentlemen doing great. Yeah, it's sad to see Jamie
- 23:10James go down. He was great.
- 23:12But yeah, he had to lose at some point, right?
- 23:15I guess seemingly they all do Ken Jennings was a heck of a
- 23:19run, as I found out just early in the program from my Co host
- 23:23Trent Condon. Anyways, I want to talk NBA with
- 23:26you because some of these series are well, they're really good.
- 23:29And obviously Denver, Minnesota, that series took a significant
- 23:32impacts, a significant blow with the injuries to to Ant in
- 23:37particular. But I want to start with Detroit
- 23:39and Orlando because there was so much love for this Pistons team
- 23:43prior to the playoffs starting. If you're looking for a dark
- 23:46horse that can come out of the east, don't sleep on the
- 23:48Pistons. Cunningham is healthy, blah,
- 23:50blah, blah. They're down 31 to an Orlando
- 23:53team that was not playing worth a crap most of the season.
- 23:56What's going on here? Sloan?
- 23:58Are the Pistons dead? Is there any chance they come
- 24:01back from A31 deficit in this series?
- 24:04Oh, man, I don't know. I've got Orlando winning this
- 24:07series. Orlando has just really punched
- 24:09Detroit in the mouth. They've just been so physical
- 24:13and just attacking at will down low, attacking the boards, great
- 24:18lob threat. I mean, Wendell Carter Junior
- 24:20has turned back the hands of time.
- 24:22It's like we've seen the CJ McCollum in the Hawks.
- 24:24Like how is Wendell Carter Junior out playing Jalen Durant?
- 24:28It's it's amazing to see. It's real big props to Jamal
- 24:33Mosley just coaching this team so well and getting the the most
- 24:36out of his squad. I don't think any of us saw this
- 24:39coming. I mean, we're we love to take
- 24:41dark horses, but Detroit was the number one seed and now they
- 24:45look like the the worst number one seed perhaps in modern NBA
- 24:48history. This is this is unprecedented.
- 24:51I, I told you guys last time we talked that I was a little
- 24:54worried that Kate Cunningham doesn't have enough help.
- 24:57He doesn't have that that go to second score.
- 25:00You know, Tobias Harris can do some stuff on the on the on the
- 25:04block and in the postgame or, you know, quarter threes.
- 25:08But who's that other guy that's really creating?
- 25:10You know, it's they've got bogged down moments that it just
- 25:14seems like they don't know what they're doing.
- 25:15They don't have enough enough confidence and just Orlando is
- 25:20just I mean, they're throwing dunks in their faces.
- 25:23It's it's been pretty wild to see.
- 25:25I I've got to Orlando one in that series for sure.
- 25:27And. Kate Cunningham, he looked awful
- 25:29in the fourth quarter last night and well, that's about all that
- 25:31I've watched of it. But he he struggled in the
- 25:34fourth quarter and you're right, the magic they were just it was
- 25:36a dunk fest there. No surprise what happened to
- 25:38game five in Denver last night. They take control right away.
- 25:43Cruise to the victory T Wolves got it within 10 with about four
- 25:45minutes left, but right away, A5 nothing and run out of Denver
- 25:48made it back to 15 very quickly. They got to find a way to win
- 25:51one game. Minnesota still 1 without Ant
- 25:54without D Vincento Is it too tall of a task to still ask?
- 25:58They hung around I guess for a bit last night.
- 26:00But do you give Minnesota they have a shot, but much of a shot
- 26:03to win one of these final two games?
- 26:07Jeez, I mean, I was so wrong about Minnesota the last time we
- 26:09talked. I didn't give the Wolves much,
- 26:11much of a chance against Joker and the Nuggets.
- 26:13So I've I've already been wrong about about Minnesota.
- 26:16I've been really, really blown away by how physical they've
- 26:20been. And I just Sumo is just playing
- 26:22the best basketball we've ever seen out of him.
- 26:24Even Bones Highland is stepping up and playing the best
- 26:27basketball of his career. But yeah, without Anthony
- 26:29Edwards and Dante de Vincenzo, that's just a couple of huge
- 26:33blows. And then we see Nas Reed get get
- 26:36banged up last night. It's like, what is going on
- 26:38here? These guys are like cursed.
- 26:40But yeah, it's zero room for error for Denver.
- 26:44But like we talked about last time that the Nuggets won 12
- 26:47games in a row to finish the season.
- 26:50If anybody can win out this series, you know, down, down
- 26:54three games to to two, I think it's Denver.
- 26:57And I really just, I find it a difficult task for Minnesota, as
- 27:02banged up as it is, to, to pull this one off.
- 27:05I'm sticking with the Nuggets. Let's go to the to OK C, the
- 27:09defending champs. What did you see them from them?
- 27:12I mean, they didn't have to. It wasn't much of A sweat as
- 27:14they swept Phoenix, who didn't give much of A series at all,
- 27:18and no one really expected that. But do you see OK C?
- 27:21Are they even more scary this year than last year from what
- 27:25you've seen in the first round of the series?
- 27:27Or is, you know, San Antonio lurking, obviously Denver
- 27:30lurking. Or is it OK CS W to win or lose?
- 27:35Well, yeah, I think the Thunder are even more scary than they
- 27:38were last year. But yeah, the the West has also
- 27:41gotten better since last year as well.
- 27:43So I do think that the Thunder and Celtics are, you know, minus
- 27:49money to to win their respective conferences for a reason.
- 27:52They're they're taking care of the ball.
- 27:54They're not, you know, turning the ball over.
- 27:57They're creating better than any other team.
- 27:59They're averaging. Those two teams are averaging
- 28:01the most points per game and they're allowing the fewest
- 28:04points per game. So usually when you when you see
- 28:07two teams leading their respective conferences by by far
- 28:12in in points and points allowed, that's a good sign that those
- 28:16two teams are are headed all the way.
- 28:18So I do have a couple of bets on on them winning their
- 28:21conferences and and meeting in the finals against each other.
- 28:24But, you know, that said that the Spurs have been really,
- 28:27really great. They've, they've hit a new level
- 28:30of confidence. They had, they, they went
- 28:32without Wendy because of the concussion.
- 28:35And everybody said, oh, well, they're going to lose that game.
- 28:37And then they, they showed up and played one of the more
- 28:40impressive games that we've seen from them in Mitch Johnson's
- 28:44entire tenure there. So I, I, I don't think anybody's
- 28:48going to mess with San Antonio right now.
- 28:50Nobody's going to be surprised if San Antonio goes all the way,
- 28:53either. We'll get Knicks Hawks Game 5
- 28:56tonight. I have no feel of this series.
- 28:59The two close games have gone Atlanta's way.
- 29:00The 2 double digit wins have gone the Knicks way.
- 29:03What do you feel tonight? What are you playing feeling in
- 29:05this series with a Knicks team? That boy feels like they should
- 29:08be in more control than they are right now.
- 29:11Yeah, it's really hard to predict from a game by game
- 29:15betting angle what what's going to happen in this series.
- 29:17It's it's been really, really crazy.
- 29:20I just, I think the coach, the the Knicks have been thoroughly
- 29:24out coached by Quinn Snyder. I, I don't know if Mike Brown's
- 29:27going to survive this year. I mean, this has been a really,
- 29:30really bad run. But I do like the Knicks to win
- 29:33tonight. I'm not going to touch the 6.5.
- 29:37It's that's a scary number for me.
- 29:39I mean, we're seeing CJ McCollum.
- 29:41He's also turning back the hands of time.
- 29:43He's been extraordinarily good in the series, but yeah, I'll
- 29:47probably bet the the Knicks over 110.5 on their team total prop
- 29:53just because I I can't possibly better spread and be confident
- 29:56either way on on this series. I like Karl Anthony Towns 13
- 30:01plus rebounds. That's plus money.
- 30:04OJ Anobi has been great. He's been the one, you know,
- 30:07driving force for the Knicks. So I like him. 25 plus points
- 30:11plus rebounds. I think that's a sneaky good
- 30:13prop for tonight. So I'll probably be attacking
- 30:16those two player props and and just staying away from that
- 30:19spread. Houston got one on Sunday night
- 30:22against the Lakers as they avoided the sweep.
- 30:24It sounds like Reese is going to play tomorrow night.
- 30:26Obviously Luca won't be back until the second round if there
- 30:30is one. It sure looks like they will.
- 30:31They've had their way with Houston.
- 30:33What is a faces re insurgents into that lineup?
- 30:37What does what does that do for the Lakers?
- 30:40Oh, I mean it just does so much for them.
- 30:42He's he's such a a confident attacker.
- 30:45He can spread, you know, spread the floor with his range or he
- 30:49can you know, if if players try to take him out of the
- 30:54three-point line, he can just take him off the dribble.
- 30:57He's a good passer as well. So I think the Lakers are, are
- 31:00just going to improve even more And, and they're definitely in
- 31:04this, in this theory there. I mean, what did, what did I
- 31:07tell you? Last time we talked, they were
- 31:09giving them plus 2 1/2 games at -130.
- 31:12I'm like, that is the, that is the bet of the century there.
- 31:16I mean, Lebron's not going to go down in a gentleman sweep.
- 31:19And here we are like now with KD's injuries and, and the
- 31:23Lakers just stepping up. And LeBron, as much as, as much
- 31:26as we don't like him up here in New England, we got to give him
- 31:28respect because he is playing really, really well for a 41
- 31:32year old. Good Lord.
- 31:34Kevin Durant as it looks like he is going to be unlikely to
- 31:38return. I think that's the phrasing that
- 31:40was used for Game 5 tomorrow at night.
- 31:43How does it end for kDa guy? That is a prolific score.
- 31:47Incredible when things are going.
- 31:48But there's always so much extra with that guy, from the burger
- 31:52accounts on Twitter to everything else.
- 31:54Just the unhappy nature leaving OKC chasing a title with Golden
- 31:58State that he's mad that people don't consider it one of his.
- 32:01They're just a lot extra there. If it was just strictly yes, it
- 32:05would be a different conversation, but we know the
- 32:07NBA Sloan, that is not the case. Yeah, I mean, there's already
- 32:11rumors about him shipping out to a different team and he might
- 32:15set the record for for most teams play, you know, played by
- 32:19a former MVP. It's just wild to see.
- 32:23He's becoming like the Ish Smith journeyman of all NBA players.
- 32:26So it's like a little more game. It's really wild.
- 32:30Yeah. It's, it's, it's sad because
- 32:32he's such a, such a great player to watch such a beautiful game,
- 32:36but there's just so much baggage injury wise and personality wise
- 32:40that has come with it that it's just almost not worth the
- 32:43headache no matter what team you root for.
- 32:46So in closing here, Sloan, what have you seen the first week or
- 32:49so of the playoffs? Do you stand?
- 32:53Did you? Would you like a redo as to who
- 32:55you think are going to be in the final?
- 32:56Who you think's going to win this thing?
- 32:58Or has it basically you've been proven, at least your theory to
- 33:02this point, that you think you're on the wrong side?
- 33:05Is there a team that you wish you had?
- 33:08Oh, I'm sticking with the Thunder and Celtics.
- 33:10I think it's boring, but that's going to be the best possible
- 33:13product out there on the floor. And I think it's the the the
- 33:16best, the best bet for for my money out there.
- 33:20I mean, I know they're minus money and it's kind of lame, but
- 33:23you know, you're still getting plus money if you bet both of
- 33:25them to to make the finals. So I'm, I'm sticking with those
- 33:28two teams. They're the most polished, the
- 33:30best coached, best offense, slash defense that they got
- 33:34everything going on. They're they're, you know, not
- 33:37committing that fouls and not turning the ball over.
- 33:40They're getting at the free throw line.
- 33:41They're knocking down threes. So I got to stick with those two
- 33:44teams. I think the dark horses are, are
- 33:47still probably the, the Nuggets, if they can survive the
- 33:51Timberwolves and the Spurs in the West and then the Cavs maybe
- 33:55in the in the East. I, I just don't think the Knicks
- 33:58are going to knock off the Celtics the way the Knicks have
- 34:00been outplayed so often by the the Hawks.
- 34:03I, I don't think the Celtics are going to lose to them two years
- 34:06in a row. They're going to come out and
- 34:07bring it, try to avenge last year's loss.
- 34:10Sloan Paiva helps us out with the NBA.
- 34:12Sloan, as always, thanks for this.
- 34:14We will talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 34:15Thanks Sloan. Have a great week.
- 34:16Enjoy. It's.
- 34:17Always a pleasure you. Need to talk to Sloan Paiva as
- 34:20we check in on the NBA. How invested are you in this?
- 34:24Or are you at all? Tonight.
- 34:28Or overall? Overall.
- 34:29Do you have any live tickets? Well, I have a Thunder Knicks
- 34:35ticket that I got. As soon as as a parlay east
- 34:39West. No, it was just a a boost pick
- 34:42the pick the finalists and it was a boost before the season.
- 34:45I got that at like. Prior to the season.
- 34:47At 22 to one, which for a while felt pretty good.
- 34:51That's dead. You're still alive.
- 34:52It's gonna be Thunder Celtics. I think it is too kind of seems
- 34:56boring. Last.
- 34:57Thunder will win again. Last two champs, I get the
- 35:00Celtics a shot. Do you?
- 35:01I think it got the Celtics at 6:00 to 1:00, got a ticket
- 35:05towards the end of the season. Just wanted to have one.
- 35:07Have quite a few of those championship parlays though with
- 35:11the Celtics to win the East. And I started to do that when
- 35:13Tatum, even before he was back, but he was coming back.
- 35:16And you knew he was on his way back?
- 35:17Yeah. Just to have it in there felt
- 35:20really good. I didn't love anybody at the
- 35:21East at that time. So take a stab.
- 35:24Now I need not only that to happen, but that I need what's
- 35:28in there. Robert McIntyre to win the
- 35:30British Open. Yeah, those stacking them up, a
- 35:33couple of those need a few more legs to get home, but someday.
- 35:37Did Cooper flag help you advance on any of your?
- 35:40No, he did me. You put him in there?
- 35:42Yeah, I. Had a few tickets with him.
- 35:44Yeah, how? Many more legs he got still
- 35:46there. Oh, probably a couple.
- 35:47You probably got to carry a lot of hair.
- 35:49Hurricane in there. You know what, I've got a lot of
- 35:51Minnesota links. I don't know the bottom.
- 35:55That's a great start. But that's my kid, said You have
- 35:57links, all right, Just just grab the links.
- 36:00Yep, grab the links. It's your free square.
- 36:02I'm free squared out. Yeah, we've been hit hard by
- 36:05your free. Squares, man, I'll say.
- 36:06Unbelievable. South Carolina women saw the
- 36:09Duke. Duke final four.
- 36:10Oh yeah, championships. Yeah, down in flames.
- 36:15Anyways, it's fun. Speaking of Down in Flames,
- 36:18coming up next, I got 10 bets. You really do.
- 36:21I have 10. Well, we're going to have a I'm
- 36:23glad we got a few extra minutes to get through all these.
- 36:26That's next. Circus sports sponsors, Trans
- 36:29Blaze of the day. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 36:31Network. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 36:33Final couple of minutes here on Tuesday for our program.
- 36:36Coming up top of the hour off the bench, Sean Roberts and
- 36:41Lucas Strain until 5:00 overtime Iowa from 5:00 until 6:00.
- 36:45So Diego Pavia's actually signed now with the Ravens.
- 36:49Did you see that? He was going to the going to
- 36:52camp, but now they've given him a three-year.
- 36:54It's not guaranteed a three-year deal.
- 36:59What did they expect to see? Drew Stevens Big Leg No No.
- 37:04No. Pavia.
- 37:05Oh, Pavia. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:06Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 37:07I was way off on that. I I misheard you.
- 37:09I'm sorry. Nothing I mean.
- 37:15What? He's a great player, Vanderbilt.
- 37:16Right, he's a great player at New Mexico State.
- 37:18He was no more. People saw him.
- 37:20Well, a few more, yeah. Absolutely.
- 37:22I loved him because, well, one of the gambling pods that I
- 37:24listened to talked about him a ton that year.
- 37:26Oh, did so you were waiting for him A.
- 37:28Little late night and absolutely.
- 37:30And he just, he had a great story.
- 37:31I mean, this guy went and he went to his rival and he pissed
- 37:34on the rug in their locker room. I mean, that's the kind of guy
- 37:38that you get. He's not an NFL quarterback.
- 37:40I don't think he is. Either now, but I also didn't
- 37:41think he was an SEC quarterback. He proved me dead wrong.
- 37:44On that one, see what he was, Yeah.
- 37:46Gamer tough guy better than you a lot.
- 37:49Of tough guys in the NFL. Though absolutely it's worth a
- 37:53shot. I guess.
- 37:54I mean if if crappy Tim Tebow can get a shot.
- 37:57Yeah, well, don't remind me what's what's behind Lamar now
- 38:03They've had veteran quarterback, what's the guy's name?
- 38:06Josh. No, Dobbs wasn't there, was he?
- 38:08No, it wasn't Dobbs. There's Johnson.
- 38:10There was. Johnson.
- 38:11Yeah, he was there for the longest time.
- 38:13Currently it's Tyler Huntley, great fit to run the offense,
- 38:17don't have to change a lot. You can do a lot of the running
- 38:19elements that you also have in there for Lamar.
- 38:22That makes a whole lot of sense. Definitely get that and same
- 38:25kind of system, same kind of quarterback.
- 38:27Well, and Lamar now he ran his coach out of town as I guess
- 38:31there was kind of a harb on him. Didn't get along apparently.
- 38:34How much Derrick Henry got left. I love Flowers and Bateman.
- 38:37I don't have any Ravens. Do you?
- 38:39Do you have any Ravens futures? I know you play them every year.
- 38:42I like my they are to you, April.
- 38:45I know, but the Chargers and the Bengals are always in my pocket
- 38:48as soon as I get them. Right.
- 38:49It's April. I will start to get invested
- 38:51into these again. This is again how different we
- 38:54are. Your look ahead the way that you
- 38:55do things. Put them on the board.
- 38:57Grab them. No, I do not have anything.
- 39:01I don't think I have anything. NFL period.
- 39:02You really? Don't.
- 39:03Not just. Oh God, I got dozens.
- 39:06We bet much differently. I bet every single day.
- 39:09Yep, you don't bet on futures. Not every single day before, but
- 39:12pretty close. Yeah, a lot of times during the
- 39:14week. Yeah.
- 39:15All right, we'll see. So what are you betting on
- 39:17tonight? You said you got 10 games, 10
- 39:19plays, 10 plays, 10, so you're you're.
- 39:21Propping, yes, we're propping along with the And I, all of a
- 39:25sudden I looked and I went through my list.
- 39:27I'm like, holy crap, I got a lot here.
- 39:29And apparently, as I'm looking through this full list, Boston
- 39:33is the place to be. Tonight we have the Celtics
- 39:37laying 10 1/2 tonight against Philly in the NBA, we have the
- 39:41Red Sox. You Savage is making his debut.
- 39:44You know that's an automatic. Automatic smashed.
- 39:46By this lefty Suarez for Boston last night absolutely destroyed
- 39:50the offense for the Jays. By the way, Dylan Cease his
- 39:54first 3 innings last night he looked like the best pitcher
- 39:56that ever that ever told the rubber and then.
- 39:59That's Dylan Cease. It's unbelievable.
- 40:00For his career, every single game, 3 innings of unhittable he
- 40:05was. And then his.
- 40:07First, his first nine in, first nine outs.
- 40:09I think 5 or 6 were via strikeout.
- 40:12And he didn't get the strikeout prop because I had the under on
- 40:14that one. And that was it that we catch.
- 40:16Yep, that was. It and it happens all the time
- 40:18with Dylan Seet. Drives me nuts.
- 40:20You think about turning him into like a mid ending bullpen
- 40:23weapon, well quit. Screwing around?
- 40:24Just throw strikes. Quit nibbling.
- 40:28It's not just. Him and this guy hasn't changed
- 40:31like we hear about those those guys you think of earlier.
- 40:33There's a reason he's been so many places as good as he is.
- 40:36He's probably tries pitching coaches absolutely crazy and
- 40:38knock it off just. Throw so your savage goes
- 40:41tonight. Yes, so that's the fade spot for
- 40:44me, bosox -102 at Circa. And I'm going to play the Bruins
- 40:48tonight, too, plus 148 little. Pressure on You want a better
- 40:51You want a better future on the Patriots just so you can sweep
- 40:53the. Board, right?
- 40:54Exactly. Jump aboard.
- 40:55Oh yeah, on April 28th. Remember what I put that one?
- 40:58In So you've got all three Boston teams to win.
- 41:01All of them. Wow.
- 41:02Including PowerPoints, yes, and then lane the points with Boston
- 41:05with the Celtics minus the 10 1/2 other picks tonight in
- 41:09games, Rays plus 1/12 right back to the well again against
- 41:14Cleveland. It's Martinez who has been a
- 41:16really good and the Rays are hot.
- 41:18We're going to stay on that train.
- 41:21Cubs, they're going to bounce back.
- 41:22OK, I'm feeling confident bounce back.
- 41:25Cabreras on the mound, Walker Bueller, he doesn't have nothing
- 41:28left, but there's not much left I think in the tank for him.
- 41:31Give me Cabrera in that matchup. And finally, you fade the wild
- 41:34tonight. You are so Dallas goes up 32.
- 41:37Take the home team -124 the best price out there in the market
- 41:41at, you guessed it, Circa Sports is where you can find that one.
- 41:44And then here are the player props for tonight.
- 41:47We're going to go over 5 1/2 strikeouts for Logan Gilbert
- 41:50against by twins. We got three NBA props as well.
- 41:54Donovan Klingen over 6 1/2 points is all tonight.
- 41:58That's all he's got to get to -114 there over 6 1/2 for
- 42:02Klingon in the Trailblazer Spurs match up.
- 42:05And then two back to that Philly Boston match up.
- 42:08I'm going to under on and beat. It's 26 and.
- 42:10A. Half feels like a ton and Paul
- 42:14George, I'm going to go over the 14 1/2.
- 42:16So those are the props to go along with the picks. 10 plays
- 42:20in total after a four and four. Are we sniffing A5 and 5:00
- 42:24tonight? Hope not if we get the right
- 42:26ones though. If we get the plus money with
- 42:28the Bruins and the Rays we would take a 5 and five.
- 42:31That would be positive on the Ledger.
- 42:34All right, Cappy's going to join us tomorrow.
- 42:35David Kaplan in his usual Wednesday spot.
- 42:39We'll do the Bears draft with Cappy.
- 42:41We'll do the Cubs. Howard, he thinks of them,
- 42:43obviously the White Sox, not a bad story so far.
- 42:47And we'll get his Derby pick as well as I'm guessing by now he's
- 42:51got his Derby pick all figured out.
- 42:53So we'll put them to the test tomorrow at to kick off our
- 42:57second hour, 1:00 for David Kaplan.
- 43:00Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors him on a weekly basis.
- 43:03That will do it for us. Appreciate you being here.
