- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to a lily Pad production. This is the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Team Up Play Show podcast Welcome to the City of Bones.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 0:52Speaker 1: It has been said that you can tell what is
- 0:55Speaker 1: the most important thing to a city by looking at
- 1:00Speaker 1: its tallest building. In medieval times, glorious cathedrals and churches
- 1:08Speaker 1: shadowed the people in God's embrace. The political palaces stood
- 1:14Speaker 1: tall over the people of the seventeenth century, and in
- 1:18Speaker 1: modern times people craned their necks to see the tops
- 1:22Speaker 1: of our skyscrapers, monoliths to industry opulence and the eternal
- 1:29Speaker 1: curse of work. I'm not smart enough to know if
- 1:34Speaker 1: this is true or not, but in the city of
- 1:38Speaker 1: New Babbel, it certainly is. The tallest thing is obvious,
- 1:46Speaker 1: a glaring reminder of a golden age. The last space
- 1:52Speaker 1: barge a behemoth, a spacecraft so large meant to carry
- 2:00Speaker 1: hundreds of thousands to the heavens now it acts as
- 2:05Speaker 1: an annoying reminder of the city's accomplished and then lost purpose.
- 2:15Speaker 1: When the silent Pilgrims went to Venus and then the
- 2:20Speaker 1: un forced the Evos to space, all support and motivation
- 2:27Speaker 1: for the once globally funded space program went out the window.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The last space barge, the launching station, and the surrounding
- 2:40Speaker 1: campus remain the molted and decaying skin of a living
- 2:46Speaker 1: dream as long slithered away. But a lotus flour must
- 3:00Speaker 1: grow through the mud and murk before it blooms atop
- 3:04Speaker 1: the water. It started with displaced workers that were out
- 3:09Speaker 1: of a job when the space program shut down. But
- 3:14Speaker 1: the station, the campus, and even the space barge started
- 3:17Speaker 1: to become homes, then a community, then a civilization. People
- 3:23Speaker 1: started moving in. They were called hippies, commies, gypsies, and
- 3:30Speaker 1: the like. Initially it was chaotic and dangerous, but the
- 3:37Speaker 1: people found their stride. It was a communal way of life,
- 3:43Speaker 1: rooted in work and generosity. It was imperfect, but it
- 3:47Speaker 1: was freeing. The station became out of reach of the
- 3:53Speaker 1: city's law enforcement. It eventually became so attractive that they
- 3:57Speaker 1: were running out of space and had to build, and
- 4:00Speaker 1: they built down the chute. The huote was an enormous
- 4:13Speaker 1: concrete tube a quarter mile wide and twelve miles long
- 4:19Speaker 1: that acted as an exhaust event. It ensured that the
- 4:25Speaker 1: fiery belches from the space barge launches made it safely
- 4:29Speaker 1: into the Colorado Desert. Adjusting for its ovular shape. Stacked
- 4:35Speaker 1: houses have now been built down its length to house
- 4:39Speaker 1: the thousands of new Babble citizens who have come to
- 4:42Speaker 1: live there, and they have become known as the Shooters.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Life in the chute is not quite as idyllic as
- 4:57Speaker 1: life within the station or the space barge itself. It's
- 5:04Speaker 1: almost a geography issue now and a numbers issue. There's
- 5:10Speaker 1: just not enough supply to get to everyone. Even though
- 5:15Speaker 1: the people that run the chute, who are the gang
- 5:20Speaker 1: with the name cor the Core Gang, even though they
- 5:24Speaker 1: promise to provide for the people, they can't reach everyone.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And about halfway down the chute, in a three storied house,
- 5:38Speaker 1: we find Jamir and his family. Jamir, you wake up,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's morning. What do you think is going on in
- 5:47Speaker 1: your room? Do you think any of your siblings live
- 5:49Speaker 1: in it with you?
- 5:51Speaker 2: Jamir, at this point, as a young man of twenty,
- 5:55Speaker 2: has started to split his time between his family house
- 6:01Speaker 2: in the Chute that he grew up in in a
- 6:03Speaker 2: communal living pod for other young adults a little further
- 6:08Speaker 2: down the chute, But most nights he eats with his family,
- 6:15Speaker 2: hangs out, and ends up just staying over. So he's
- 6:19Speaker 2: staying when he sleeps in his childhood home. He's sleeping
- 6:24Speaker 2: with his younger brother, who's his younger brother who's half
- 6:29Speaker 2: his age, Jason Junior, who just goes by Jase. So
- 6:35Speaker 2: when when Jamiir wakes up, he sees across across the room,
- 6:42Speaker 2: which is only about four feet away, sleeping kid brother
- 6:46Speaker 2: arms of Kimbo hanging out of the bed, open mouthed.
- 6:51Speaker 2: He enjoys watching his kid brother before his chaotic movement
- 6:56Speaker 2: and day begins at rest, peace full. He hears his
- 7:01Speaker 2: sisters are up, he hears the activities of the day
- 7:05Speaker 2: outside have already become and the loud reverberations that happen
- 7:11Speaker 2: in the shoot of echoing sound are a comfort to him.
- 7:14Speaker 2: At this point, the noisiness of the shoot is just
- 7:19Speaker 2: the background of his life. Jamir looks over his old
- 7:25Speaker 2: bed at some of the posters that Jase has left
- 7:29Speaker 2: up as he likes it. When Jamir comes to visit,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and Jamir looks round on the ground for the cleanest
- 7:37Speaker 2: pair of underwear to swap into.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And as you are putting on your underwear, Jamir, what
- 7:46Speaker 1: do you look like? Yeah?
- 7:49Speaker 2: So, Jamir, like a lot of shooters, has very short hair,
- 7:55Speaker 2: His hair is dark dark brown. He has dark dark
- 7:59Speaker 2: brown hair, which is tight largely because the shoot also
- 8:03Speaker 2: gets hot, and so long hair is kind of seen
- 8:07Speaker 2: as a luxury that a lot of shooters don't tend
- 8:11Speaker 2: to go for. So he has very short crops, dark
- 8:15Speaker 2: brown hair. He has mid to dark caramel colored skin,
- 8:22Speaker 2: deep brown eyes, thick eyebrows. Doesn't stand too tall, but
- 8:27Speaker 2: not too short either, about five nine five ten, like
- 8:31Speaker 2: a lot of shooters. Also is a pretty wiry person.
- 8:35Speaker 2: There is not a ton of food to go around
- 8:38Speaker 2: in the shoot, and sometimes sometimes also people are a little
- 8:44Speaker 2: suspicious of people who seem to be getting filled out
- 8:47Speaker 2: a little bit, that perhaps they're not sharing properly with
- 8:50Speaker 2: their neighbors.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yeah, your room is at the very top ear and
- 9:00Speaker 1: it kind of adapts with the curved roof of the shoot,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and it is a ladder to get down, so that
- 9:12Speaker 1: that's the way the rooms are kind of stacked on
- 9:14Speaker 1: top of each other, no wasting space for stairways. You
- 9:22Speaker 1: go down the ladder, you see that your father is
- 9:29Speaker 1: singing and dancing kind of in between the dining room
- 9:35Speaker 1: and the kitchen, and he's serving food to your other siblings.
- 9:41Speaker 1: He's like got some potatoes, got some shoot potatoes. Can't
- 9:47Speaker 1: get potatoes like this anywhere in the world. We got
- 9:50Speaker 1: shoot eggs from shoot chickens, shoot bacon from shoot pigs,
- 9:55Speaker 1: shoot orange juice. Your dad is not a singer, but
- 9:58Speaker 1: he's just a fun guy, and so he's just trying
- 10:02Speaker 1: to make your younger siblings laugh and your older sister
- 10:07Speaker 1: rolling her eyes.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I walk up, I kind of give my youngest
- 10:16Speaker 2: sister Dara a shove and say, yeah, but I don't
- 10:20Speaker 2: think those eggs came out of the big shoot. I
- 10:21Speaker 2: think those came out of the chicken shoot, right Dad.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yes, good one kid. Yeah, Yeah, that's right.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The egg shoot, the egg shot. Come on, give it up,
- 10:31Speaker 2: give it up, Give it up.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Leah.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I looked at my oldest I looked at my
- 10:35Speaker 2: oldest sister. Hold out my fists for a fist bump.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Aliah gives you a begrudging fist bump. Your dad is
- 10:45Speaker 1: a little bit living in the reality that his teen
- 10:48Speaker 1: kids are not too old for this kind of thing,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and I think you meet him at this level trying
- 10:57Speaker 1: to get your siblings involved in the passion of life.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, I definitely take a hearty helping of potatoes.
- 11:07Speaker 2: But I try to Yeah, I try to well, I
- 11:10Speaker 2: enjoy the potatoes. I try to go light on the eggs.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I want to save. I want to be respectful and
- 11:14Speaker 2: save some eggs for my mom, especially because I know
- 11:16Speaker 2: she'll eat last.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Your older sister, Aliah, who you just tried to finish,
- 11:24Speaker 1: fist bump in reaction to your dad's song as you
- 11:28Speaker 1: all sit down and start eating, except for your mom.
- 11:31Speaker 1: She's not here yet, but Aliah says she's peeling an orange,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and she goes, you can't grow oranges in the shoot, Dad,
- 11:40Speaker 1: I bought this in the city. Your dad just says,
- 11:43Speaker 1: and aren't we lucky that you did? You're amazing. You
- 11:48Speaker 1: got got work today's son.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Hopefully you know I'm gonna I'm gonna check in see
- 11:52Speaker 2: what jobs there are to be passed around. But I mean,
- 11:56Speaker 2: you know, it's a workday for the fair citizens of
- 12:01Speaker 2: New Babylon. I say, as I look kind of pointedly
- 12:06Speaker 2: at Leah and say, you know, so they need their
- 12:09Speaker 2: coffees and lunches and files delivered all across this town,
- 12:14Speaker 2: and some honest shooters have to be the ones to
- 12:18Speaker 2: do it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: That's good, good son, good for you. Hey, listen, do
- 12:24Speaker 1: you you ever have to go up up north in
- 12:28Speaker 1: Colorado North? Do you ever have deliveries up there? Very rarely?
- 12:31Speaker 2: I mean some guys occasionally get assigned to those. I've
- 12:36Speaker 2: done one job with somebody else.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Okay, okay, because I don't really like you going up there.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You know what they say, up there, see a shooter,
- 12:45Speaker 1: shoot shooter. You gotta be careful.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I definitely, I definitely try to keep a
- 12:51Speaker 2: low profile.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Good, good, Well, I'm proud of your son. I'm working.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I'm working here today as always. Your dad is a
- 13:02Speaker 1: plumber in the shoot. He doesn't get paid with you know,
- 13:07Speaker 1: a paycheck. He is just paid with goods and living
- 13:13Speaker 1: and other services. So like the electrician in the shoot
- 13:17Speaker 1: coming comes and does the work for free, and your
- 13:20Speaker 1: dad goes and does the plumbing for free, and there's
- 13:22Speaker 1: a bunch of them. It's not just the two of them.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But that's the idea. Yeah.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm very proud of my dad and his work.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But I have decided to, yeah, branch out, try to
- 13:36Speaker 2: earn a little coin and a new Babylon, even though
- 13:39Speaker 2: between the Core and the New Babylon taxes a lot
- 13:43Speaker 2: of the money I want to bring home gets eaten up.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yeah, you grab a banana stuff in your bag and
- 13:55Speaker 1: you gotta head off to work. You take the last
- 13:59Speaker 1: ladder out of your house to the empty space below,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and chained up there with too many redundant bike locks.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Is your prize possession, your hoverbike. Standing next to it
- 14:21Speaker 1: is your mom. This is where you normally find her
- 14:23Speaker 1: in the morning. She's smoking. I think you're old enough
- 14:30Speaker 1: to understand that your mom puts her stress into cigarette
- 14:35Speaker 1: smoke and likes watching it float away from her until
- 14:39Speaker 1: it dissipates into nothing. That's all right, mama, All right kid,
- 14:46Speaker 1: going out to work.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I give her while she's sitting down smoking, I
- 14:52Speaker 2: kind of wrap one arm around her, squeeze her, and
- 14:55Speaker 2: rest my head atop hers and say.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Good morning, Good morning, honey, good morning. You sleep okay,
- 15:04Speaker 1: slept fun, slept fun.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Then. Yeah, I was a little beat after yesterday. A
- 15:10Speaker 2: lot of deliveries. I hope I can get as many today.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I'm proud of you. You're doing good. You're
- 15:16Speaker 1: doing good. You and your sister out there in the city.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but you know, Flia works in the buildings,
- 15:24Speaker 2: so I'm not doing quite that good. But thank you, mama,
- 15:27Speaker 2: thank you.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I love you.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I love you too. I might not be home tonight.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I need to Actually, if I don't sleep at the
- 15:38Speaker 2: community living pod a certain amount of time, then I
- 15:41Speaker 2: might lose my bed. So I'll let you. I'll try
- 15:45Speaker 2: to let you know. But if you don't see me tonight,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I'm just crashing there.
- 15:48Speaker 1: All right, that's okay. Just tell your friends hello for me.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And if you need anything, if you need food, or
- 15:56Speaker 1: you need to come do your laundry, you can always
- 15:59Speaker 1: come here. You can bring your friends too. We love
- 16:01Speaker 1: having you, We love having them. Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I always love sharing a meal,
- 16:07Speaker 2: but I pay up my new Babbel dollars to the course,
- 16:12Speaker 2: so they give me food rations. Mama, They're they're they're
- 16:15Speaker 2: feeding me.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Okay, all right. I just hope that doesn't run out
- 16:19Speaker 1: on us.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, the rations are a little thin,
- 16:24Speaker 2: but hey, sometimes, you know, sometimes people reject to food deliveries.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So I get a little extra bite, a little perky
- 16:34Speaker 2: of the job.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Mom, she laughs, as you start to unlock your bike.
- 16:41Speaker 1: What does Jamir read in the tension in his family
- 16:48Speaker 1: about their views of their living situation in the city.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Jamir, unlike his parents, actually like went to get like
- 16:56Speaker 2: a formal education and went to get that in New Babbel,
- 17:01Speaker 2: and so Jamiir understands the city better. My mom has
- 17:09Speaker 2: a weird love hate relationship with New Babbel where she
- 17:13Speaker 2: wants to get out of the Shoot. It's tired of
- 17:16Speaker 2: the many hassles of shoot living, but also resents a
- 17:21Speaker 2: New Babbel for how they treat shooters. She especially was
- 17:24Speaker 2: there for some of the worst treatment of shooters when
- 17:29Speaker 2: she was a little kid and her mom moved them
- 17:32Speaker 2: into the shoot. Yeah, where's I Definitely like my dad
- 17:37Speaker 2: has made peace with this life and is trying to
- 17:40Speaker 2: just enjoy this life. They're both proud of my older
- 17:45Speaker 2: sister Leiah for kind of trying to fight her way
- 17:49Speaker 2: into the middle class, and my mom quietly is rooting
- 17:53Speaker 2: for her to get a better job and be able
- 17:57Speaker 2: to save up money to buy a place in New Babble,
- 18:02Speaker 2: where my dad would feel very bummed, very saddened by
- 18:07Speaker 2: that after kind of giving his life's work literally to
- 18:11Speaker 2: the shoot and receiving you know, the services and food
- 18:15Speaker 2: that has shared the Shoot, for her to kind of
- 18:17Speaker 2: opt out of that system would be difficult, but you
- 18:23Speaker 2: know he sees his kids. He's too old at kids
- 18:26Speaker 2: already are now working out of the shoot, and he
- 18:29Speaker 2: knows times in the shoot are tough, so it might
- 18:32Speaker 2: be a different world, but he doesn't like to think
- 18:34Speaker 2: about it too much.
- 18:36Speaker 1: You prepare your bike as these thoughts move through your head,
- 18:40Speaker 1: your mom and your sister trying to find heaven elsewhere,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and your father doing his damnedest to create heaven where
- 18:50Speaker 1: you are. You grab your have a bike. Most shoot
- 19:01Speaker 1: kids have a normal two wheeled bike. Your boss was
- 19:07Speaker 1: selling an old one, and you saved up for a
- 19:11Speaker 1: long long time to afford this Zero friction that's the
- 19:15Speaker 1: name of the bike, Zero Friction from Ellington Electric. The
- 19:22Speaker 1: two paddles in the place where the wheels would be
- 19:25Speaker 1: on a normal bike are flat and make the bike
- 19:28Speaker 1: stand up for its charge. You have to pedal for
- 19:32Speaker 1: five minutes to create enough energy for the paddles to
- 19:37Speaker 1: activate their anti gravity bumpers, so you kind of sit
- 19:41Speaker 1: here and chat with your mom as you're pedaling for
- 19:45Speaker 1: that first five minutes, and then it slowly rises from
- 19:50Speaker 1: the ground as the shoot around you begins to crawl
- 19:58Speaker 1: in its waking. People leave their homes for jobs in
- 20:02Speaker 1: the city. Some have cars, some have bikes. Some take
- 20:06Speaker 1: the shute bus to the electric rail that has a
- 20:09Speaker 1: stop just over the Huote and you ride out into
- 20:16Speaker 1: the city. Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I definitely throw on my helmet and then when i'm
- 20:20Speaker 2: you know, a little bit out of eyesight of my
- 20:22Speaker 2: mom while I'm in the shoot, I definitely take it off.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah. You are twenty one or something, right, you twenty? Yeah?
- 20:31Speaker 1: The route to your work is pretty simple. In fact,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know the city incredibly well, just because of having
- 20:40Speaker 1: rode around it so much. Your boss's named Joey, and
- 20:47Speaker 1: he's got a place that does Joey's deliveries. It's very simple.
- 20:52Speaker 1: There are no apps. People call in and tell them
- 20:56Speaker 1: what they need and what they want, and Joey makes
- 20:59Speaker 1: a list for you. You for the next day sort
- 21:02Speaker 1: of thing. You get in and Joey sees you right up.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I've got you down in sas today, Jamir, mostly letters
- 21:14Speaker 1: and food.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Sounds good, easy work. Thanks for the Thanks for the
- 21:18Speaker 2: day's work, boss, Yeah, you.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Have a good one. Come back if you need thing,
- 21:21Speaker 1: but try not too huh, Yes, sir, we'll do. He
- 21:25Speaker 1: gives you your list, you look through it, and this
- 21:30Speaker 1: is kind of how you always begin. You start to
- 21:33Speaker 1: track it out in your brain, how you're going to
- 21:35Speaker 1: do things, where you're going to go. The nice thing
- 21:40Speaker 1: about your job is you if you get a good
- 21:42Speaker 1: list like this, you have to finish it all. But
- 21:45Speaker 1: you're done when you're done, Yeah, and you try to
- 21:49Speaker 1: go fast because you know the city. Well. Yeah, sometimes
- 21:54Speaker 1: you have to go to pick things up and take
- 21:55Speaker 1: it to someone else. But sometimes people have sent things
- 21:58Speaker 1: to Joey's and then you are given those and you
- 22:01Speaker 1: take them around. Why do you think Jamir is attracted
- 22:09Speaker 1: to this job? Well, why do you think it's special
- 22:11Speaker 1: to him? And what does it mean to have your bike?
- 22:20Speaker 1: Having a bike is like flying two feet off the.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Ground and little, that little separation, that little bit of magic,
- 22:31Speaker 2: that little whisper of like the spaceships of old that
- 22:37Speaker 2: launched out of here and the heroes of old that
- 22:40Speaker 2: flew through this city. Zipping around this city, it makes
- 22:46Speaker 2: me feel connected to it and connected to its history,
- 22:50Speaker 2: connected to the great things that happened here. And I
- 22:57Speaker 2: don't want to be a shooter that all I know
- 23:00Speaker 2: is that little stretch and those same houses built on
- 23:05Speaker 2: the same things in the same community living pods. I
- 23:11Speaker 2: like the uniqueness of different parts of New Babel and
- 23:16Speaker 2: the things going on. And even though again I don't
- 23:20Speaker 2: have the wherewithal perhaps to break into the upper worlds
- 23:27Speaker 2: of New Babel, this delivery job does give me glimpses
- 23:31Speaker 2: into the justice system, into the business going on, into
- 23:36Speaker 2: the governmentism. Delivering lunches and delivering right inner office mail,
- 23:42Speaker 2: I feel like I'm a part of it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Yeah, And I like that. Yeah, it gets you within
- 23:51Speaker 1: all of the city. Today, you're heading towards the Kansas
- 23:55Speaker 1: part of town. New Babble sits on the tripoint of
- 23:59Speaker 1: KANSASSCA in Colorado. It's called sass Sas by the people
- 24:06Speaker 1: of New Babel. And like I said, you know the
- 24:09Speaker 1: city very well. You know the streets very well. The
- 24:11Speaker 1: numbers run by number. Excuse me, the streets run by
- 24:16Speaker 1: numbers from south to north, and by a lot of
- 24:21Speaker 1: different names from east to west. Sass is in the
- 24:25Speaker 1: south part of the city. So you're working on the
- 24:28Speaker 1: low numbers first to sixty fifth. You're reading your addresses
- 24:32Speaker 1: and you're trying to kind of parse all this together
- 24:34Speaker 1: and put a route in your mind. And you like
- 24:40Speaker 1: the Sass Run. It's a little chaotic, but it's a
- 24:44Speaker 1: beautiful part of the town. There are different kinds of
- 24:47Speaker 1: people that live in every sector of the city, but
- 24:49Speaker 1: if you were to stereotype the people that lived in
- 24:54Speaker 1: this southeast part of town, you would call them artsy.
- 25:11Speaker 1: There is a rebellious, artistic bohemian spirit here. It's rare
- 25:17Speaker 1: to find a wall that hasn't been marked beautifully by
- 25:20Speaker 1: the spirit of the urban experience in paint and chalk,
- 25:25Speaker 1: design and wonder. Sas is where you come to give
- 25:30Speaker 1: in to your lust for life by indulging in both
- 25:35Speaker 1: the basist and the most high brow temptations. There are
- 25:40Speaker 1: artisans that excel in every craft and practice. It is
- 25:45Speaker 1: a swirling and lively den of passion, color and pleasure,
- 25:52Speaker 1: soaring theaters, experimental art galleries and studios, sweaty and smoky
- 25:58Speaker 1: music venues, bragging neo jazz and blues, and bright outdoor
- 26:04Speaker 1: arenas forcing the lilting strings and woodwinds of classical music
- 26:10Speaker 1: to dance on the winds of sass in New Babbel
- 26:17Speaker 1: as you ride through all this. This side of town,
- 26:20Speaker 1: as you can imagine, is kind of sleeping right now.
- 26:25Speaker 1: As you are earlier then it's waking. How do you
- 26:29Speaker 1: think your day of deliveries go today?
- 26:32Speaker 2: Yeah? I think you know. Being in the SaaS run,
- 26:36Speaker 2: I try to adjust my demeanor and tone based on
- 26:41Speaker 2: the vibe of the people that I'm serving, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 2: So I try to feel myself a little bit more relaxed,
- 26:49Speaker 2: even though I'm speeding and trying to make every second
- 26:52Speaker 2: count to just beat this list and cheat the day
- 26:56Speaker 2: by getting out done an hour or two before my
- 26:58Speaker 2: colleagues will. I try to act calm and not rush,
- 27:03Speaker 2: because I know that SaaS people hate that when you
- 27:06Speaker 2: feel like you're in a big hurry, and they sometimes
- 27:10Speaker 2: want to chat and act like they care about my life,
- 27:13Speaker 2: and I try to politely get through those conversations as
- 27:17Speaker 2: quickly as possible without again like annoying them, with the
- 27:22Speaker 2: hope that I get some tips from from from these
- 27:28Speaker 2: folk who don't aren't as good of tippers as one
- 27:35Speaker 2: might expect, but who think that they're great tippers.
- 27:41Speaker 1: They try, they try.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Yes, yes, and and they also like to make a
- 27:47Speaker 2: little bit of a production of giving a tip, which
- 27:51Speaker 2: feels insulting to me.
- 27:53Speaker 1: M yeah, let's go ahead, and a roll to see
- 27:56Speaker 1: how you tip out today? All right, cool, Yeah, let's
- 27:59Speaker 1: do so for this, forgetting a day of good tips,
- 28:04Speaker 1: I would let you roll cokes, street Smarts or maybe
- 28:09Speaker 1: Glory also, depending on how you're going about it.
- 28:13Speaker 2: I think I'll go about it by uh again again,
- 28:17Speaker 2: just trying to mirror the people that I'm talking to,
- 28:23Speaker 2: meet them in their day, and try to be a happy,
- 28:29Speaker 2: warm presence in our brief interactions.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Cool, I'm gonna call that street Smarts. Then, okay, I'm
- 28:35Speaker 1: gonna roll my D eight. This is a simple check
- 28:39Speaker 1: for you. So I'm rolling a D six. I got
- 28:42Speaker 1: a one. I also got a one. But that means
- 28:46Speaker 1: that you fail, sadly, because meets it loses in this game.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Uh, meets it loses it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You tip out normally, you don't tip out exceptionally today,
- 28:58Speaker 1: but just kind of, like you said, a normal day
- 29:01Speaker 1: in sass where your tips are just kind of like
- 29:04Speaker 1: very performed and not as big as you would like. Yeah.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I take my money, and as I'm taking my money,
- 29:12Speaker 2: I'm putting in two different pockets. One pocket is the
- 29:17Speaker 2: money I think I can get away with squirreling away,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and then the other money is the money that I'm
- 29:25Speaker 2: willing to show to the core, knowing that they'll take
- 29:30Speaker 2: a large cut of it.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Very cool. Let's also roll just to see if you
- 29:40Speaker 1: get done early today. So give me that other another
- 29:42Speaker 1: street smart check. Okay seven, ooh nice, you beat me
- 29:47Speaker 1: by five, so you get done real early. You get
- 29:51Speaker 1: done an hour and a half ahead. Almost every day
- 29:56Speaker 1: after work you meet up with your two best friends.
- 30:00Speaker 1: And do you think that that communal living spot in
- 30:04Speaker 1: the shoot is where you guys meet up?
- 30:07Speaker 2: I think we might rotate. I think one of my friends, Jackie,
- 30:13Speaker 2: who lives in the chute, has a nicer communal isn't
- 30:17Speaker 2: a better maintained shared communal living pod that we crash at.
- 30:22Speaker 2: But our friend Taylor works in New Babbel, and so
- 30:27Speaker 2: occasionally we might meet up at a comic book shop,
- 30:31Speaker 2: or at a bar, or at even even a park
- 30:34Speaker 2: if the weather's nice near to where he works.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Got it, got it? Got it? So Taylor, Jackie, she
- 30:42Speaker 1: lives in the shoot, she lives closer to the station
- 30:46Speaker 1: and closer to the space bars is still there, so
- 30:49Speaker 1: she has a different life than you do. But she's
- 30:53Speaker 1: still a shooter. And then, yeah, your friend Taylor lives
- 30:57Speaker 1: in Colorado South. Hey, I think let's have y'all meet
- 31:01Speaker 1: at There's a bar called Tanks that is pretty close
- 31:09Speaker 1: to the station in the downtown area. And it's this
- 31:14Speaker 1: bar where these big old barrels and vats of beer
- 31:20Speaker 1: are set up that are meant to look like the
- 31:24Speaker 1: gas tanks of space barges. You all meet up there.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Taylor's not quite there yet. He just got a new job.
- 31:33Speaker 1: But Jackie's sitting there in the booth as she normally is. Jackie,
- 31:48Speaker 1: you beat me today. I don't have a job like
- 31:51Speaker 1: you do, so not yet. I'm looking I'm looking around.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Hey, there's nothing wrong with being a true shooter. You
- 31:58Speaker 2: know what I'm saying.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I do like it. I do like the shoot. I
- 32:01Speaker 1: mean you mean, I mean you know we know.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I dap her up, I give her a hug,
- 32:09Speaker 2: sit down, plunk down, and say, so, what do you
- 32:12Speaker 2: think shall we uh? Should we get something? Or should
- 32:15Speaker 2: we wait and hope that big money bags will pick
- 32:17Speaker 2: up the drinks today?
- 32:19Speaker 1: Oh? We should definitely wait. Hell yeah, he just got
- 32:24Speaker 1: a new job. He's got We'll say that we're celebrating
- 32:28Speaker 1: him by letting him pick up the tab.
- 32:30Speaker 2: That is correct, That is correct, Yes, yeah, So what's
- 32:36Speaker 2: going on, Jackie? Was anything going on today for you?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Just reading? I went over to the pen Dragon Library.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Pen Dragon Library is the biggest library in the city
- 32:50Speaker 1: and it is in the ask So north east, the
- 32:54Speaker 1: Nebraska part of town, which is for jack I mean
- 32:58Speaker 1: this this city is enormous for Jackie. That's a that's
- 33:01Speaker 1: a day trip. Jackie doesn't have a job. She gives
- 33:05Speaker 1: one of her energies that she's willing to to y'all's obsession,
- 33:12Speaker 1: y'all's great hobby. Didn't really find anything interesting today, but
- 33:18Speaker 1: that's all right, hey, I mean, kudos to you forgetting
- 33:22Speaker 1: all the way out there. That's yeah, that's quite a hike, hey.
- 33:27Speaker 2: And every time you don't find anything, you know, you
- 33:31Speaker 2: get then you're just one book closer, one article closer
- 33:34Speaker 2: to whatever nugget you'll dig out next.
- 33:37Speaker 1: That's right, Like how many knows until you get a yes?
- 33:40Speaker 1: Like if if I've done a hundred, then I got
- 33:43Speaker 1: to be close, right, I.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Mean maybe not, you know, it might be all knows,
- 33:47Speaker 2: but we don't know.
- 33:49Speaker 1: No, no, we don't know for sure until we.
- 33:52Speaker 2: We don't know, you know, And I mean other you
- 33:55Speaker 2: found some stuff out other people have found some stuff out.
- 33:58Speaker 2: There's there's a lot of history here that the city
- 34:01Speaker 2: is so focused on the next big thing and on
- 34:05Speaker 2: what's going on now that it doesn't care about the
- 34:09Speaker 2: cool shit that used to happen here.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Yeah, kisses me off there. But you know this, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 1: you guys, wait for Taylor. Taylor comes in. The doorbell
- 34:20Speaker 1: the bell over the door is hit by the waving door,
- 34:25Speaker 1: and Taylor walks in. Taylor is in his blues. So
- 34:31Speaker 1: Taylor just became a police officer in New Babel. I
- 34:39Speaker 1: think the way your friend group kind of operates around
- 34:42Speaker 1: this is like you're in love with the superheroes of
- 34:47Speaker 1: old right, there was an age of heroes over sixty
- 34:50Speaker 1: years ago in the city. I think Jackie has poured
- 34:54Speaker 1: herself into its research, and Taylor's thought was like, well,
- 35:00Speaker 1: if I can't be a hero, the next best thing
- 35:04Speaker 1: is to be a cop.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Look at this fresh meat coming in.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Boys, Hey stop stop stop it you.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Piece a ship. They gave you a batch. I give
- 35:21Speaker 2: him a big hug.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys, hug it out. He gives Jackie a hug.
- 35:26Speaker 1: He's very recently. I don't know what they call it.
- 35:29Speaker 1: When you when you get even you become a cop,
- 35:33Speaker 1: you graduate from Yes, he's very recently graduated from police academy.
- 35:40Speaker 1: I think this might be kind of his second week
- 35:44Speaker 1: on the on the beat, you know, Hey, hey, don't
- 35:48Speaker 1: give me that, man. I'm I'm trying out there. I know,
- 35:51Speaker 1: like I don't. I don't have powers and we'll never
- 35:54Speaker 1: get that, you know, because that that that day and
- 35:56Speaker 1: age is over. But like, I'm doing what I can.
- 35:59Speaker 2: You know, no, no, no, you have power.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Man.
- 36:02Speaker 2: You got the power to beat up as many shoot
- 36:04Speaker 2: kids as you want.
- 36:05Speaker 1: And you guys laugh as Taylor sits down. How are
- 36:15Speaker 1: we doing, guys?
- 36:16Speaker 2: We're good? Uh, you know, I worked my butt off
- 36:19Speaker 2: for a few Nichols and the Jackie over here made
- 36:23Speaker 2: it up to the pen Dragon today but sifted for
- 36:26Speaker 2: a while but didn't find any gold.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Unfortunately, that's too bad. Jackie chimes in, Hey, so who
- 36:34Speaker 1: would we be? I don't think we've ever asked this question,
- 36:38Speaker 1: which is crazy. We must have at some point, maybe
- 36:42Speaker 1: long enough ago that we don't even remember, But who
- 36:46Speaker 1: would we be? Of? Like the seven big heroes back
- 36:49Speaker 1: in the day, there's war Hero, the Range, the Inspector,
- 36:55Speaker 1: Inspector Claw, Carte Blanche, Spellbook, Bright Sword, ever Wing. Those
- 37:01Speaker 1: are kind of the big ones. Who would like if
- 37:04Speaker 1: we got to be them, who would we be?
- 37:07Speaker 2: Oh? Man, I mean, you know, I want to say
- 37:11Speaker 2: Spellbook obviously, but right I don't have.
- 37:16Speaker 1: The mind for that stuff.
- 37:18Speaker 2: I mean, I want to, you know, be the one
- 37:22Speaker 2: that can crack the code. And but you know, Leah's
- 37:26Speaker 2: got more of the determination plus brains, so I don't know.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Maybe I'd get lucky, you know, and get a dope
- 37:35Speaker 2: sword like Bright Sword and destroy stuff with it, you know.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Taylor says, well, I'm drawn to Inspector Claw. It's
- 37:45Speaker 1: because I want to be a real detective. I want
- 37:47Speaker 1: to make detective one day and solve real crime. Good luck.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Jackie says, well, it doesn't seem like he was a detective.
- 37:55Speaker 1: There's a lot of confusion about what his powers were.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Anyway, I could see you as a detective Claw, definitely, man,
- 38:03Speaker 2: Jackie says.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Plus, he was also one of the Big three. I
- 38:06Speaker 1: don't think any of us are Big Three material.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I dared not. But you know, the officer
- 38:13Speaker 2: over here, he's reaching for the stars.
- 38:15Speaker 1: I'm trying. It's tough. It's tough. For you, Jimir, because
- 38:19Speaker 1: I feel like you love to fly around the city
- 38:22Speaker 1: like everwing on your bike. You're into those magic texts
- 38:26Speaker 1: that your grandma left to which you're awesome. By the way,
- 38:30Speaker 1: I think they're magic.
- 38:32Speaker 2: They're inscrutable, but I mean they're weird and we haven't
- 38:37Speaker 2: found in all of our research anything like whatever language
- 38:42Speaker 2: these things are written in. So yeah, yeah, I mean
- 38:49Speaker 2: I wish I could be anybody. You know, I'd be
- 38:53Speaker 2: the dorky sidekick of somebody, you know. I just I
- 38:59Speaker 2: don't know.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Well, yeah, but I'm just saying you have a lot
- 39:02Speaker 1: of the You are smart, you know, I don't know.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I know your sister got the big fancy stuff, but
- 39:07Speaker 1: like you're you're still smart and and you're also a
- 39:10Speaker 1: fighter though, like like bright Blade, remember when you you
- 39:14Speaker 1: would defend me against the bullies before him I growth
- 39:17Speaker 1: spurt Junior high.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Hell yeah, I'm not gonna leave you hanging man. And
- 39:21Speaker 2: also you didn't have to grow up in the shoot,
- 39:24Speaker 2: so you were at a disadvantage.
- 39:26Speaker 1: I do nvl's knuckles, that's for sure. Jackie says, sorry, y'all,
- 39:32Speaker 1: I think I'm breaking up the trio. I think I'm
- 39:35Speaker 1: taking carte blanche just got a rep for the ladies.
- 39:37Speaker 1: You know, there weren't too many back then.
- 39:39Speaker 2: No, yeah, stand true, stand true.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I support that, plus using those fiery chains, using the
- 39:45Speaker 1: tools of her bondage to deal out vengeance. So bad ass. Yeah,
- 39:50Speaker 1: I mean.
- 39:54Speaker 2: What I wouldn't give to have been born then. I mean,
- 39:56Speaker 2: my all I ever hear is that how hard it
- 39:59Speaker 2: was us back then, and how terrible it was, and
- 40:02Speaker 2: how shooters were struggling to survive.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But like.
- 40:08Speaker 2: It was an age of real heroes. And now now
- 40:12Speaker 2: what do we have to look up to? I guess
- 40:15Speaker 2: I guess good cops, right.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Like you look to Taylor and I think you see
- 40:22Speaker 1: he is crestfallen a little and just says that's what
- 40:28Speaker 1: I wanted. But I don't know, it's not like it's
- 40:33Speaker 1: not like what I thought it'd be. You know, when
- 40:38Speaker 1: you you know, when you you're thinking about like an
- 40:41Speaker 1: amazing burger or something you're gonna have, and then you
- 40:45Speaker 1: get there finally and it just doesn't deliver.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I genuinely do.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I was kind of putting myself in, I don't know, gunslinger, badass, righteous,
- 40:58Speaker 1: just cop type thing, and it's just it's not like that.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Hey, man, you in all seriousness, you've been on this
- 41:07Speaker 2: job for.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Like two weeks. Yeah, you're right, You're.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Right, and give it time. Some crazy stuff will go
- 41:13Speaker 2: down and you'll have the opportunity to step up. And
- 41:19Speaker 2: I know you when that moment comes, you're gonna step
- 41:23Speaker 2: up and be a hero.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I hope.
- 41:25Speaker 2: So I know it. I know it, man.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Anything else you chat about with your friends here, I
- 41:36Speaker 1: think we might just.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Like argue about plans we make for the next hangout
- 41:42Speaker 2: of like, ah, where should we meet next? That's too expensive,
- 41:45Speaker 2: Oh that's too far? Get in without having phones to
- 41:49Speaker 2: kind of make the plans. The latter half of any
- 41:52Speaker 2: hangout has to be this. And I also do like
- 41:55Speaker 2: to try to draw some details out of Taylor into
- 41:59Speaker 2: like what his job is, who he's working with, and
- 42:03Speaker 2: get some Yeah, just just get more insight into like
- 42:08Speaker 2: again side of the justice system of New Babel.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Taylor, right now, he'll give you a little info.
- 42:16Speaker 1: He is working on the in Colorado North Sometimes that's
- 42:21Speaker 1: where new recruits are from the Academy begin because it's
- 42:25Speaker 1: kind of it's probably the part of the city that
- 42:28Speaker 1: has the least crime, or at least that's the reputation
- 42:32Speaker 1: of like the fanciest, nicest part of town. So he's
- 42:36Speaker 1: just probably a b cop up there doing regular patrols,
- 42:42Speaker 1: answering easy calls like hey, my door was open when
- 42:46Speaker 1: I got home. Could you please come in and look
- 42:48Speaker 1: in my house? Make sure no one got in, just
- 42:51Speaker 1: like rich people shit stuff like that. From time to
- 42:55Speaker 1: time he'll get hired out to ride behind a transfer
- 42:59Speaker 1: of money and transfer of funds. All money in New
- 43:03Speaker 1: Babbel is cash. Uh So there's a lot of cash
- 43:08Speaker 1: that just has to move around, and so he'll do that.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Sometimes he's kind of got the easy part of well
- 43:15Speaker 1: I say easy, but he's got the light work right now,
- 43:19Speaker 1: I would say, yeah.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I definitely like it. Gain after teasing him and riding
- 43:24Speaker 2: him a little bit, I definitely like take a genuine
- 43:27Speaker 2: interest and like express like, oh that you know that
- 43:31Speaker 2: that's cool that you help somebody, or that's fascinating. I
- 43:34Speaker 2: didn't know like what went into again some of some
- 43:38Speaker 2: of the aspects of his job. I try to give
- 43:41Speaker 2: give my give my brother a little pep.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Talk, yeah you and hanging out with your friends. Are
- 43:48Speaker 1: you gonna go home today? Before you uh head to
- 43:52Speaker 1: the the communal.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Living, Living, Pot Living CLP the clip. Yeah, yeah, I
- 44:05Speaker 2: think I will come home for dinner and again telling myself,
- 44:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to my place. I'm gonna, I'm gonna,
- 44:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna be there. But it's a fifty to fifty
- 44:16Speaker 2: chance if I get my bike back up and running
- 44:20Speaker 2: and actually go back to the communal living prod. I'm
- 44:23Speaker 2: having a hard time leaving the nest.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Yeah. When you get home, your dad and a man
- 44:31Speaker 1: who you recognize are standing out underneath your home. The
- 44:37Speaker 1: man is we would probably call him like a collection
- 44:40Speaker 1: agent of the core. He just says, how'd y'all do
- 44:45Speaker 1: this month, Johnny boy? Your dad says, oh, good, good,
- 44:49Speaker 1: here you go. Your dad very happily hands him over
- 44:52Speaker 1: a big wat of money from you, your family and
- 45:01Speaker 1: your mother who works in the city as well.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Yeah, as I pull up, I kind of see this
- 45:07Speaker 2: happening and take a deep breath, try to put on
- 45:12Speaker 2: a happy face and say I got a little more
- 45:15Speaker 2: actually today, and I'm careful to reach into the correct
- 45:18Speaker 2: pocket to retrieve the cash that I get. I said,
- 45:23Speaker 2: I get. You know, you know, those dass people aren't
- 45:27Speaker 2: the best tippers, even for hard workers. But yeah, yeah,
- 45:32Speaker 2: I got this to give it the community.
- 45:36Speaker 1: That's a good kid. That's a good kid. He takes
- 45:38Speaker 1: the money and takes about half of it and gives
- 45:41Speaker 1: you the rest back.
- 45:42Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, thank you, thank you so much.
- 45:44Speaker 2: When I take that back, and again, careful to put
- 45:47Speaker 2: it back in the pocket that I took it out.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Of right, And he goes over to a flatbed truck
- 45:57Speaker 1: and grabs a single box of goods, just you know,
- 46:01Speaker 1: normal stuff you do, toothbrush, toothpaste, or I think there's
- 46:07Speaker 1: probably a system where your family can request, can request
- 46:11Speaker 1: certain things.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Always paper towels, always exactly, some detergents, the essentials.
- 46:19Speaker 1: And then there is something special in there today that
- 46:24Speaker 1: you never have gotten from the shoot before, and it
- 46:27Speaker 1: is a bag of oranges. Your dad doesn't seem to
- 46:31Speaker 1: notice crabs the box says, oh thank you. The gentleman
- 46:36Speaker 1: who's here, the collector says, it's not as much as
- 46:39Speaker 1: we would like, but we're trying, we're growing.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Hey, did those oranges come from the shoot? Oh?
- 46:47Speaker 1: Good, good observation, young sir, Yes they did. The core
- 46:55Speaker 1: and I mean this is this is inside information. Although
- 47:01Speaker 1: we are giving oranges out to a lot of people,
- 47:02Speaker 1: but the Corps has figured out how to get the
- 47:07Speaker 1: biodome in that space barge up and running. What Yeah,
- 47:14Speaker 1: well thank you. Yeah, of course we're hoping more like
- 47:19Speaker 1: this and and just generally more for our people can
- 47:22Speaker 1: can start happening now. Yeah.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's exciting. Thanks for uh, thanks for all
- 47:30Speaker 2: you guys do.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Yes, your thing. He salutes you, gets in his truck
- 47:35Speaker 1: and goes on to the next house. You guys climb
- 47:40Speaker 1: back up into Yeah.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I just say, dad, dad, Yeah, I was just sayings.
- 47:48Speaker 2: As my dad is like about to like take this
- 47:51Speaker 2: crate up with him, I like kind of forcibly, like
- 47:54Speaker 2: I I got it, I got it, Like make make
- 47:58Speaker 2: him give it up against his will so he doesn't
- 48:03Speaker 2: have to climb up with all this junk.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we're walking up the ladder for someone his age
- 48:08Speaker 1: is not the easiest with a big old box. Your
- 48:14Speaker 1: sister is waiting for the two of you. When you
- 48:17Speaker 1: get up there, your sister Aliyah. Yeah.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I come up and I say, hey, Leah, guess what
- 48:23Speaker 2: the shoot has?
- 48:24Speaker 1: Now? What's that.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Fresh oranges? I walk over and I put the crate
- 48:31Speaker 2: tent on the table and I say, grown proudly right
- 48:37Speaker 2: here in the shoot. I mean technically the barge, but
- 48:40Speaker 2: you know the shoot. That's I mean, that's great. How
- 48:47Speaker 2: I don't know something. They got a biodome in the
- 48:52Speaker 2: barge to turn on, and I guess it can turn
- 48:55Speaker 2: into the orange dome and we're getting oranges now, so
- 49:00Speaker 2: good stuff.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I guess h Aliyah always gets antsy around
- 49:06Speaker 1: this time of the month when they come to collect.
- 49:11Speaker 1: She You've heard this line probably a lot of times,
- 49:14Speaker 1: but she goes, Dad, you know, if you've got a
- 49:17Speaker 1: plumbing job in the city, you could actually make enough
- 49:21Speaker 1: money to provide for all of us and maybe even
- 49:25Speaker 1: get us out of here. Your dad takes this with
- 49:30Speaker 1: some grace and smiles and says, what don't you like
- 49:33Speaker 1: about the shoot? Leah?
- 49:36Speaker 2: I definitely kind of cringe as she says this, Like
- 49:39Speaker 2: we've done this before.
- 49:41Speaker 1: You're just you're just so attached to getting out of
- 49:44Speaker 1: here that you can't enjoy it for what it is.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I mean, it's amazing. You want to be oppressed out there,
- 49:51Speaker 1: stand in a line, go to the bank. Here, we
- 49:55Speaker 1: could be we could be free. We could be free
- 49:57Speaker 1: in the shoot. Yeah, it's not. It's not for everybody
- 50:02Speaker 1: out there. A lot of people are happy here. I mean,
- 50:06Speaker 1: I'm pretty happy here, all right. She rolls her eyes
- 50:11Speaker 1: and just says, it's just I don't think it's the
- 50:15Speaker 1: freedom you guys think it is. If you stopped working
- 50:19Speaker 1: for them, do you think they still be delivering food?
- 50:23Speaker 1: There was just a guy here to take away your
- 50:25Speaker 1: heart earned cash, my money. Moms.
- 50:31Speaker 2: We pay in and if the plumbing breaks down, Dad
- 50:36Speaker 2: has to help somebody. But when the electric goes out,
- 50:39Speaker 2: or when the dishwasher breaks they they send a guy
- 50:43Speaker 2: free of charge. It's you know, it's does it even
- 50:47Speaker 2: out every month? No? But hey, maybe we're accidentally helping
- 50:52Speaker 2: people that are having a bad bunch down the street. Leah,
- 50:55Speaker 2: it's not all about you. And I kind of look
- 50:58Speaker 2: at Dad and not as I finished my statement.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I know it's not about me. It's too late for me.
- 51:05Speaker 1: It's too late for you. Jimir. Dad, think your thank
- 51:09Speaker 1: you the teens man. Think of your little kids. They
- 51:12Speaker 1: could grow up outside of here. Your dad at this,
- 51:17Speaker 1: it probably usually doesn't go this far. I think your
- 51:20Speaker 1: dad at this gets a little dark and just says,
- 51:24Speaker 1: how dare you? How dare you? All I think about
- 51:28Speaker 1: is my kids. I've made the best life I could
- 51:32Speaker 1: for them here, and he kind of goes off into
- 51:38Speaker 1: one of the other rooms, climbs the ladder up to
- 51:40Speaker 1: his bedroom.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I I kind of sternly look at Leah and say, hey,
- 51:51Speaker 2: Darna and Layla aren't kids anymore. They're they're they're they're
- 51:57Speaker 2: growing in fast. I don't want them to overhear you
- 51:59Speaker 2: talk like this. It's not right.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I don't think it's right for them to be stuck
- 52:06Speaker 1: here when they don't have to be, when they don't
- 52:08Speaker 1: need to be. Dad has an incredibly useful and desirable
- 52:14Speaker 1: skill that could be used all throughout the city. People
- 52:18Speaker 1: paid good money for that kind of thing. I just
- 52:21Speaker 1: don't get it. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to. I
- 52:25Speaker 1: don't know. Maybe I am trying to be a little contentious,
- 52:27Speaker 1: but I just don't understand.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Even if it is and I lower my voice, even
- 52:35Speaker 2: if it is like the right technical move, he's not
- 52:39Speaker 2: gonna change. He's been serving these people his whole life.
- 52:44Speaker 1: At his age.
- 52:45Speaker 2: He's not just gonna stop and go fix some nice
- 52:50Speaker 2: toilets in the sass or North Colorado or something. He's
- 52:55Speaker 2: he would feel so out of his element. He doesn't
- 52:58Speaker 2: want to travel around there. You know how much he
- 52:59Speaker 2: hates going into the city. This is where he is.
- 53:03Speaker 2: This is where he'll stay. If Leila and Dara and
- 53:07Speaker 2: Jace want to claw their way out, you can give
- 53:11Speaker 2: them a leg up when the time comes. But until then,
- 53:15Speaker 2: I mean they're going to school. Okay. That that was
- 53:19Speaker 2: big that mom and dad figured that out for them
- 53:23Speaker 2: and for us, and so you know, if they do
- 53:26Speaker 2: well and make the right connection, maybe they'll choose to
- 53:32Speaker 2: be out, or maybe they'll choose to stay here. It's
- 53:36Speaker 2: fine here.
- 53:41Speaker 1: What about you, though, I mean, you're a working age now,
- 53:44Speaker 1: you're a smart kid. You could you could do something better,
- 53:49Speaker 1: some different.
- 53:51Speaker 2: I mean, I don't have the connections that those New
- 53:55Speaker 2: Battle kids have. I'm just another shoot, clearly trying to
- 54:02Speaker 2: take a piece of their pie. I'm I'm fine with
- 54:08Speaker 2: my little life. It's not the best life, but I'm fine.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Leah.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And you're you're shining bright. You know, you're you're gonna
- 54:20Speaker 2: rise up and do great things.
- 54:21Speaker 1: You know, she sighs and looks at you. Just want
- 54:32Speaker 1: you to be on my team. Brother.
- 54:35Speaker 2: I'm on your team. I'm on your team. You know,
- 54:39Speaker 2: if if you need help, Look, I pocketed like you know,
- 54:43Speaker 2: seventeen new Babbel dollars today. So when you're ready to
- 54:48Speaker 2: buy that loft department in the city, I'll help out
- 54:51Speaker 2: with the down payment.
- 54:53Speaker 1: She goes, Oh, so you don't even really believe in it.
- 54:55Speaker 1: You're keeping money for yourself. Hey, hey, everybody plays the game. Okay,
- 55:00Speaker 1: you're stupid if you're not playing the game. Whatever, go
- 55:05Speaker 1: keep wasting your time with those little dead saviors you love.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I don't understand why everyone isn't
- 55:15Speaker 2: wasting their time trying to figure out what special sauce
- 55:20Speaker 2: those people had and how we can get it back.
- 55:23Speaker 1: That time's dead, brother.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Well, it's only dead because somebody killed it. It doesn't
- 55:28Speaker 2: doesn't It doesn't have to be this way.
- 56:07Speaker 1: That was been as Jamiir and me Johnny Wilson as
- 56:12Speaker 1: your game director. Thank you so much for listening to
- 56:16Speaker 1: the first part of Rigel's origin story. I'm just here
- 56:20Speaker 1: to let you know that the story is not over.
- 56:22Speaker 1: There are three more full episodes. If you want to
- 56:25Speaker 1: hear those before jumping into the main show, then head

- 56:38Speaker 1: you over there, heroes. This has been a lillly pad
