- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Hi, my name is Katie Follett and
- 0:29today I am going to be talking about mental resilience.
- 0:32Who needs it? Why is it important?
- 0:35What is it? I feel like sometimes it's a
- 0:37buzzword that gets thrown around a lot, but it can be kind of an
- 0:40ambiguous concept as to what it actually is.
- 0:43I was a professional runner for 13 years with Brooks and
- 0:47recently went back to grad school and got my master's in
- 0:50counseling. And so now I'm kind of combining
- 0:52MY2 passions together. And where this journey really
- 0:55started for me was back in 20 and 15 and 2016.
- 0:59I had some near misses in making the US team.
- 1:02I missed making the Olympic team by one spot in 2016.
- 1:05And I've had the opportunity to work with an incredible mentor
- 1:10in Dan Paff. And at that time when I missed
- 1:13making the team, he asked me one of the most impactful questions
- 1:16of my life. He asked me why do you run?
- 1:19And that was the kind of question that I call a fork in
- 1:23the road question, fork in the road moment because it really
- 1:28impacted the trajectory of my career and how I thought about
- 1:31running and sport from that point forward.
- 1:34So I started to answer Dan and 30 minutes into the
- 1:38conversation, he stopped me and he goes, OK, stop.
- 1:42You finally just said something that's a good reason for
- 1:44running, and that was pretty embarrassing.
- 1:47But what I just said was, well, I guess when I started running,
- 1:51I felt like it was something that God made me good at, and I
- 1:54just want to make the world a little bit of a better place
- 1:56through running. And that's a huge part of my why
- 2:00today. That's why I'm doing this.
- 2:02At the time, it led to the creation of Kicking with Katy
- 2:05Girls Camps, where I talked about the mental side of sport
- 2:09with girls and how they could really embrace challenges.
- 2:13You become the best version of themselves.
- 2:15So I've been doing that for the last eight years or so and I'm
- 2:19really passionate about this because I think mindset is a
- 2:22really undervalued aspect of performance because sport at the
- 2:26end of the day is really just a playground for life.
- 2:29It's where we develop all of these skills that are going to
- 2:32benefit us no matter where we go and what we do.
- 2:35They benefited me, obviously, as a professional athlete, but now
- 2:38I'm realizing how important they are more than ever because I'm
- 2:41still using all of these skills that I developed now as a
- 2:44counselor and now as a mom. And so I like to think of
- 2:49resilience as a toolbox. You want to have the right
- 2:54tools. You want to be able to pull out
- 2:56what you need when a certain challenge or a certain obstacle
- 3:00presents itself. I also think resilience is being
- 3:03flexible. I think it's seeing failure as
- 3:07feedback and as a springboard for success.
- 3:11And I think resilience is really what allows you to bounce back
- 3:13stronger when you didn't achieve a goal and focus on what are the
- 3:17things that I can do to learn and grow from this and become
- 3:19the best version of myself. I worked with an for a little
- 3:23bit with an awesome sports psychologist, Jim Bauman, and he
- 3:26used an example that I really love of a 2 by 4 in a phone
- 3:30book. So imagine that you're standing
- 3:32there and you have a 2 by 4 and you have a phone book.
- 3:35Which of those is stronger? And oftentimes people will
- 3:38answer, well, of course, the 2 by 4.
- 3:40And so my next question would be which one is harder to break?
- 3:44If you applied a large amount of force to the 2 by 4 and also to
- 3:48the phone book, the 2 by 4 would break because it's rigid,
- 3:52whereas the phone book would absorb the impact.
- 3:57It'd be a lot harder to break. You want to be like that phone
- 4:01book. You want things to go through
- 4:04you and over you and really be able to just stay in the moment
- 4:07and really quickly and easily come back to, OK, that happened.
- 4:11How can I solve the problem in front of me and how can this
- 4:15help me achieve the goals that I have for myself as a person and
- 4:18who I'm becoming? So I think there's many
- 4:21different facets to resilience. A good illustration of this is
- 4:25if you think of a triangle at the bottom, the foundation of
- 4:28the triangle would be basic needs, physical well-being.
- 4:34And then right on top of that would be emotional support.
- 4:37Because I really believe that these create the solid
- 4:39foundation for mental health and are huge part of resilience.
- 4:43Because I tell athletes, if your body is tired or unhealthy or
- 4:46injured, you're just not going to perform optimally even if you
- 4:50master the mental side of sport. So sleep, eat good food, trade,
- 4:56if you're not training, you're not going to run well.
- 4:58So that's the foundation. And then support, because good
- 5:03information is just good information without trusted
- 5:05people around you who are going to offer encouragement and
- 5:08perspective and guidance and give the accountability to keep
- 5:11going. And so that's why I think
- 5:14coaches are in such a powerful position because you're with
- 5:16these athletes day in and day out and you have an amazing
- 5:19opportunity to speak into their lives and help shape who they're
- 5:22going to become by asking good questions and encouraging them
- 5:25to reflect, just like Coach Dan did for me when he asked me that
- 5:28really impactful question. And I think these things are so
- 5:32important because they support the lifestyle that's necessary
- 5:34to support the change. So I like to think of this as a
- 5:39garden support. And basic needs are the healthy
- 5:41soil that support good gardening practices.
- 5:45And this analogy kind of came from this quote by Bruce Lee,
- 5:49and I love it. And so I'm just going to read it
- 5:51really quick. The mind is a fertile garden.
- 5:53It will grow anything you wish to plant beautiful flowers or
- 5:57weeds. And it is with successful
- 5:59healthy thoughts or negative ones that will, like weeds,
- 6:02strangle and crowd with the others.
- 6:04Do not allow negative thoughts to enter your mind, for they are
- 6:07the weeds that strangle confidence.
- 6:08So I always like to ask kids what would happen if you planted
- 6:11a garden and then you just didn't go check in on it?
- 6:15Well, it would die. You'd have a lot of weeds.
- 6:17You wouldn't have any fruits and vegetables and flowers and all
- 6:19the things that you wanted. And so mental skills are kind of
- 6:22like that. You have, it's like daily
- 6:25intentional practice, going out, pulling out the roots of the
- 6:29things that are these negative beliefs that are strangling
- 6:32confidence, and then also watering and flirt and
- 6:37fertilizing and nourishing the plants that you, the things that
- 6:41you do want to grow. So what are these good guardian
- 6:44practices, the things you can do to help the good things like
- 6:48confidence grow? And this is the facet of
- 6:50resilience that I focus on, the mental facet.
- 6:53But I would also argue that, like I said, physical health,
- 6:56spiritual health, emotional health, they're all big elements
- 6:59in addition to mental health. So I like to categorize these
- 7:05into three big problem areas that I would find myself falling
- 7:09into as an athlete. How well could I manage
- 7:12distractions? How well could I get unstuck
- 7:16from negative self talk, negative thinking spirals?
- 7:19And what made it worth it to keep going when I did it hit my
- 7:23performance goals or when I got injured?
- 7:26Did I know why I ran apart from performance?
- 7:28And so these are the kind of things that I'm really
- 7:30passionate about digging into. And if you're interested as
- 7:33well, I invite you to kind of follow along over the next
- 7:36couple series of these because I'm going to dig a little bit
- 7:39more into each of these and why I think they're so important.
- 7:42I'm going to share some stories from my career, a few more of
- 7:44those really impactful conversations that were these
- 7:47fork in the road conversations that changed the way I thought
- 7:50about things and share a few skills hopefully along the way.
- 7:55So you have some good takeaways. So thank you so much for
- 7:58listening along. You can find me on Instagram at
- 8:01Fallout KB. I think my website is going to
- 8:03be included in the show notes, so feel free to reach out.
- 8:06I'm kind of taking everything that I've developed and putting
- 8:08it together into a course. So if you have athletes who
- 8:10would be interested in doing a little bit more one-on-one type
- 8:13learning, that's a great resource too.
- 8:15And I have lots of free resources to that I'd love to
- 8:17give away. So I'd love to hear from you.
- 8:20And finally, thanks to Go Athletics for creating this
- 8:24podcast. It's just such an awesome
- 8:25opportunity and I love the heart behind it and I'm really
- 8:28thankful to be a part of it and I will catch you next time.
