- 0:28seeing this eighty year old woman finally retired. At her next checkup, her
- 0:34new doctor told her to bring all her medicines that had been prescribed to her.
- 0:40As the new doctor was going through them, his eyes grew wide as
- 0:44he realized this grandmother had a prescription for birth control pills. Missus Smith,
- 0:51do you realize that these are birth control pills? Yes, they helped me
- 0:57sleep at night, she said, Missus Smith, I assure you that there
- 1:02is absolutely nothing in these pills that could possibly help you sleep. The elderly
- 1:08woman reached out and patted the young doctor's knee. Yes, dear, I
- 1:14know that, but every morning I grind one up and mix it in the
- 1:19glass of orange juice that my sixteen year old granddaughter drinks. Believe me,
- 1:26it definitely helps me sleep at night. Most of us avoid difficulty and a
- 1:42run away from adversity. We would love it if life were always easy,

- 3:57Keep shining your light and now back to our show. Do you know
- 4:09the answer to this week's trivia question? The question was who painted the Mona
- 4:15Lisa? The answer Leonardo da Vinci. Yes, Leonardo da Vinci painted the
- 4:23Mona Lisa between fifteen oh three and fifteen nineteen. Now you know, Here
- 4:44are three valuable lessons we can learn from adversity. Number one, resilience and
- 4:51strength. Adversity teaches us resilience, the ability to recover and bounce back from
- 4:58difficult situations. When we face and overcome challenges, we build mental and emotional
- 5:04strength, which prepares us to handle future obstacles more effectively. Each experience of
- 5:11adversity can reinforce our confidence in the ability to cope and thrive despite difficulties.
- 5:18Number two empathy and compassion. Going through tough times can make us more empathetic
- 5:26and compassionate toward others. Experiencing adversity helps us understand the struggles and pains that
- 5:33others may be facing. This understanding fosters a deeper connection with people, enhancing
- 5:40our ability to offer support, kindness, and encouragement to those in need.
- 5:46And number three, adaptability and growth. Adversity often requires us to adapt and
- 5:54find new ways of thinking and acting. It pushes us out of our comfort
- 5:59zones and encourages personal growth. Through adversity, we learn to be more flexible,
- 6:04creative, and resourceful. These experiences can lead to greater self awareness and
- 6:11the discovery of strengths and capabilities we might not have realized we possessed. By
- 6:17embracing and learning from adversity, we can develop important life skills that contribute to
- 6:24our overall well being and success. The legendary newsman and commentator Paul Harvey once
- 6:40wrote this letter to his grandchildren. We tried so hard to make things better
- 6:47for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like
- 6:53better. I'd really like them to know about hand me down clothes and how
- 6:59made I scream and leftover meatloaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you
- 7:04learn humility by being humiliated, that you learn honesty by being cheated. I
- 7:12hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the
- 7:16car. I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are
- 7:21sixteen. It would be good if at least one time you can see puppies
- 7:28born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black
- 7:32eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a
- 7:38bedroom with your younger brother or sister, and it's all right if you have
- 7:43to draw the line in the middle of the room. But when he wants
- 7:47to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let
- 7:51him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother or sister
- 7:57wants to tag along, hope, I hope you'll let him or her.
- 8:01I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends, and that
- 8:07you live in a town where you can do it safely on rainy days.
- 8:11When you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver
- 8:15to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen writing with someone as
- 8:20uncool as your mom. I If you want a sleinshot, I hope your
- 8:26dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you
- 8:31learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use
- 8:37computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head.
- 8:43I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on
- 8:48a boy or girl, and when you talk back to your mother, that
- 8:52you learn what ivory soap tastes like. May your skin your knee climbing a
- 8:58mountain, burn your hand on a stove, stick your tongue on a frozen
- 9:03flagpole. I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope
- 9:09you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint,
- 9:13I hope you realize that he or she is not your friend. I
- 9:20sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandma or grandpa
- 9:24and go fishing with your uncle. But you feel sorrow at a funeral and
- 9:31joy during the holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a
- 9:35baseball through your neighbor's window, and that she hugs you and kisses you at
- 9:41Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand. These things
- 9:46I wish for you. Tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.
- 9:54To me, it's the only way to appreciate life. Thank you for joining
