- 0:01What is the healthiest emotion? There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #1146 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:13Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:18Lincoln Francis in celebration of his birthday.
- 0:20Happy Birthday Lincoln. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:23book, The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
- 0:25chad.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 0:29and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:31www.fromchad.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:36You can feel entitled to what you have, but upgraded thinking
- 0:38knows there is someone to thank for all of it.
- 0:41Here's the story. When the Soviet Union collapsed
- 0:44in 1991, teachers walked into their classrooms and hit a wall.
- 0:49For 70 years, the state had taught children to be grateful
- 0:51to the party, grateful to the system.
- 0:54Thank you, Comrade Stalin, for our happy childhood, was the
- 0:57phrase kids were taught, and it had spent those same 70 years
- 1:00erasing God. So when the whole structure
- 1:02fell, teachers went looking for a way to teach gratitude and
- 1:06couldn't find the ground to stand on.
- 1:07One researcher interviewed educators who told him flatly,
- 1:11We're looking for moral answers right now because we don't have
- 1:14any. The Russian word for thank you,
- 1:16spasibo, comes from May God save you.
- 1:19The Soviets pushed it out and replaced it with thank you,
- 1:21comrade. But you can feel what got lost,
- 1:24because a person who never learns to be grateful will never
- 1:27understand. There has to be a transcendent
- 1:29reference point. There is someone capital S.
- 1:32He owes his existence to his breath, his family, his
- 1:36mourning, the whole gift of being here at all.
- 1:39That's the trap of entitlement. It quietly deletes the capital.
- 1:44W who? And once there's no one to
- 1:47think, there's nothing left but demand.
- 1:51Zig Ziglar used to say the healthiest of all human emotions
- 1:55is gratitude. If that's true, then entitlement
- 1:59is the disease and gratitude is the antidote.
- 2:02Years ago, my mentor Bill Calvin, one of the most joyful
- 2:06man I've ever known, told me he ended each day by naming 3
- 2:10people he was grateful for. So I started writing five things
- 2:14I was thankful for every morning.
- 2:16Today is day 4700 in a row and I'll tell you what it does.
- 2:22It keeps The Who in view. It keeps me from believing I
- 2:27earned anything. The better story to tell
- 2:30yourself is I'm not entitled to anything.
- 2:33I'm grateful for everything. Tell me a story of gratitude to
- 2:37from chadsmith@gmail.com and send someone a text and tell
- 2:41them I'm thankful for you today.
