- 0:00Voices 20:23. It's upon us.
- 0:06I'm excited and you should be excited.
- 0:09I think what a lot of leaders today don't understand is the
- 0:14power of structure, the power of great questions and the power of
- 0:21honesty and I'll get to that in a moment.
- 0:24But remember those three things because I may forget them and
- 0:28that's a real, that's the reality, is that a joke as I've
- 0:31always said when I think this is important to to own this and and
- 0:36appreciate this about myself because it's what makes me Worse
- 0:39idea. What significant add and so I
- 0:41quite literally may forget, that's that was not a, that was
- 0:45not a joke, but moving forward, 20 voices. 2023 is upon us.
- 0:51I'm excited. I'm blessed to have the
- 0:54opportunity to speak. I'm excited to travel to New
- 0:56York. I'm excited to meet some of the,
- 0:59the fellow speakers. The the fellows facilitators.
- 1:03I'm excited to have the opportunity to collaborate to,
- 1:07to engage to bring value. I'm going to I'm excited for the
- 1:10topic. I think, I think the amazing
- 1:13work that we're doing a top employers fits right in with the
- 1:16theme and the focus of the content and and I'm blessed.
- 1:21And so, I think what I want to do today is I want to kind of
- 1:24give a little bit of a sneak preview, like my third sneak
- 1:28preview of what's to expect once you Once you have the, the
- 1:34luxury, the opportunity, from being confident of hearing, my
- 1:38perspectives and and and understanding how I'm looking at
- 1:41internal comms and as as it integrates with employee
- 1:44experience and how both kind of meet and marry each other
- 1:48because that's like the the consensus of the of the fireside
- 1:51chat voice to 2023 brought to you by step base, do a little
- 1:55plug. The the punchline of my
- 1:58particular piece is that we're trying to find ways that we can
- 2:01authentically. Kate with fellow employees with
- 2:05fellow leaders externally as well.
- 2:07And make sure that everyone understands that this is a great
- 2:10company to work for. This is a this is a top
- 2:13organization to be a part of and the in these are the best
- 2:16practices and principles that can allow us to get to that
- 2:19point. And I think a lot of companies
- 2:21don't want to do the hard work and I think when my job is doing
- 2:24the voices 2023 keynote, that's another plug is to have an
- 2:30opportunity to provide that value shared those Perspectives
- 2:33and get real. And so, with this particular
- 2:36episode of, what I want to do is I want to cover the 90-minute
- 2:39one-on-ones and the five to ten categories that I think every
- 2:43single organization to think thoughtfully about as everyone
- 2:47listening. Those, I had an organization
- 2:50called Beyond brand and what we were doing with Beyond Brandon
- 2:52and frankly what we're still trying to accomplish in the
- 2:54world is we are trying to get organizations to wake up and
- 2:59realize that there are certain categories that you must Unpack
- 3:03that you must understand that you must analyze.
- 3:07And when I say must what I'm in analyze, what I'm referring to
- 3:10is there are certain categories that you must know understand
- 3:14about term employees and you should keep up two to three
- 3:18month pulse on each one of those.
- 3:19And never, and that inevitable categories.
- 3:21It's a must. And I think there are certain
- 3:24categories that should be unpacked, only a 90 minute
- 3:26conversation. These categories are connected
- 3:28to driving massive engagement, and a positive.
- 3:32Perspective on the employee experience in these and if the
- 3:36organizations are unpacking these categories and makes your
- 3:39organization in my eyes and frankly, more importantly in the
- 3:43employees heís, a top employer, a company that everyone's
- 3:47excited to work for, right? And so that's kind of the the
- 3:52main factor. They are what I want to explain
- 3:53it, so I guess we should probably hop in.
- 3:55I'm just trying to figure out there's anything else from a
- 3:57context perspective, I should provide.
- 4:00Nope, let's hop, hop it. So 90 minute meetings, Five to
- 4:03ten categories. What are you going to talk
- 4:05about? Right?
- 4:06So I'll give you a few examples. I believe organizations, every
- 4:10single day of the week should be thinking about, how can we
- 4:13engage with our people better. How can we internally
- 4:16communicate internally build better relationships?
- 4:18How can we get to know the preferences?
- 4:20The needs of our people better? Here's an example, career
- 4:24mapping. How can we keep a firm pulse on
- 4:28the career mapping needs the career mapping perspectives and
- 4:32the career mapping. Desires of every single employee
- 4:35at the company today. How can we do that?
- 4:38I think a 90-minute conversation will go a long way.
- 4:41It'll go a long way to genuinely, understand that Sarah
- 4:44and accounting is obsessed with HR but she's also obsessed with
- 4:48marketing. And so, maybe since we don't
- 4:50have an employer branding initiative, we want to give
- 4:52Sarah that opportunity to test things out, create an MVP show,
- 4:57her chops show the the perspectives and the value in
- 5:00the points of view, she has in the in the medium and she Allow
- 5:03her to start collaborating with HR and collaborating with
- 5:05marketing and we'll allowed her to bring it in.
- 5:07VP of a employer branding model to the organization, that is a
- 5:11tangible outcome that that exists during a very simple
- 5:15career, mapping 90-minute conversation.
- 5:18These are things that I believe if we're talking pure internal
- 5:20Communications. If we're talking pure leaders
- 5:23building Relationships by internally communicating
- 5:26internally, trying to understand that is one major factor in
- 5:30category that so many organizations.
- 5:32Need to understand if you're a leader listening today.
- 5:36Do you know where every single one of the employees that you
- 5:39lead that are at your agreement organization?
- 5:42Do you know their next five years for the next five to ten
- 5:46moves professionally where they want to go, what they want to
- 5:49do, what they need to learn who they need need to connect with,
- 5:52do you know those things? And if so do you have them
- 5:55stored somewhere and then are you acting upon that?
- 5:59Are you working effortlessly to try to?
- 6:02Stand who they are trying to connect them with whoever they
- 6:05want to connect with trying to teach them what they want to
- 6:07learn and put them in the position to bring value.
- 6:11And it's always your best idea as a leader to do that because
- 6:14inevitably is going to help the company.
- 6:16It's going to help you as a leader, most likely get
- 6:19promoted. It's going to help the
- 6:20organization in the bottom line and it's going to help the
- 6:23overall engagement. Nothing.
- 6:24This is a big factor that many managers many VPS.
- 6:28Many c-suite leaders. Are just missing the mark on.
- 6:32Another category. How are each individual inside
- 6:36the company? How are they thinking about
- 6:38onboarding would have our own boarding preferences and needs
- 6:42saddle, right? I've pushed so many
- 6:44organizations when you hire someone.
- 6:47Prior to going through onboarding, I believe it should
- 6:50be a 20 30 minute conversation to say here is our standard
- 6:54onboarding process that we've developed that works for us.
- 6:57Is there anything about your past onboarding experiences that
- 7:02really behooved you that helped you that was contextual or
- 7:07unique to you? That you would like to bake into
- 7:09our process here? Is there anything you can think
- 7:12of That's simple conversation, that's simple.
- 7:15Internal communication, from a manager to an employee, to a new
- 7:18hire that can really increase the overall perspective.
- 7:22The value in the end, just the way that someone looks at the
- 7:25company and that will immediately put them in the
- 7:27consideration of saying, this is a top employer.
- 7:30This is a great place to work. This isn't a this this is an
- 7:34organization where I feel connected to where I feel my
- 7:38engagement is high So many I'll repeat myself, so many
- 7:44organizations are missing that Mark.
- 7:47How much energy does it take to go to your employee soon as
- 7:51they're hired set a 30-minute meeting and ask them for three
- 7:55to four bullet points, three to four ideas that can be baked
- 7:57into the onboarding process. That is something that they will
- 8:00appreciate something that will make them feel better.
- 8:03Something that will keep them engaged, something that I will
- 8:05allow them to understand the work better.
- 8:09And Implement that how difficult is that?
- 8:13Not difficult at all. You can give you can give that
- 8:16responsibility to HR. You can get that responsibility
- 8:19to the manager, the the direct supervisor and leader, you can
- 8:22give that you can give that you can give that to a multitude of
- 8:25people. You can give that to the the
- 8:27mentor, buddy that they may provide to you, which I think is
- 8:30always a great taste. And again, top employer, did
- 8:32that with me. You can do that in many ways.
- 8:36I give you another one. Performance Management.
- 8:40Put them in the position to not only make their kpis and rookie
- 8:43ours, which I think is great. What's Trevor did?
- 8:47But I would also say, Try to understand how each and every
- 8:51employee get have them give you examples of the top five moments
- 8:56where they've been they've been led the best the communications
- 9:01of leadership the way that leader made them feel
- 9:03emotionally. The way that leader interacted
- 9:07with him doing tough and difficult times or they had to
- 9:09give constructive criticism, give your supervisor a moment to
- 9:14genuinely understand that information.
- 9:16And the only way an employer can do that, Only way I knew higher
- 9:20can do that is by having the internal conversation and so
- 9:24when I think of internal Communications and I think of
- 9:26employee experience when I think a top employer, when I think of
- 9:29the best place to work when I think of an organization that is
- 9:32sought. After when I think of something,
- 9:36a company, a role a department that I'm that I'm completely
- 9:40enamored by. It's a, it's a process from an
- 9:44internal Communications perspective that allows that
- 9:47organization that allows that leader, Her to know me.
- 9:51To genuinely get to know me. And if you can do that as a
- 9:56company, I guarantee your employee experience, your
- 10:00engagement, your return, your attention, your attrition
- 10:03numbers will definitely go down all those other numbers.
- 10:05I just said, in fact, there's a metrics will go up, I guarantee
- 10:08they will be much more productive in 90 days, sprints,
- 10:14First 90 days like that is a thing.
- 10:17And I think we all need to realize that there are different
- 10:20Ebbs and flows in seasons, and organizations.
- 10:23And there are moments where you need someone to give strong
- 10:25significant output over, 90 to 120 days stretch of time.
- 10:30And if you have a great relationship with an employee,
- 10:32you know what, you know what, what what, what levers to pull
- 10:35on and how to get the most in the best out of them.
- 10:38If the company needs it you know, exactly how to do it.
- 10:41You know, exactly. As a leader, how to support
- 10:43that. So I think just going back to
- 10:47the snippet in the sneak peek as I think about stat base voices
- 10:522023, internal Communications employee experience a top
- 10:55employer, a great employer. When I think about all those
- 10:59factors, the first thing that comes to mind is having
- 11:0290-minute conversations 20-minute conversations covering
- 11:06multiple topics and generally trying to understand who you are
- 11:10leading. Just make sense.
- 11:14As always just a few thoughts, just a few perspectives, we will
- 11:19definitely talk soon. As always just a few thoughts,
- 11:17just a few perspectives, we will definitely talk soon.
