Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Whenever I feel stuck or I feel like things aren't moving,
- 0:05Speaker 1: I start to reflect and realize how far I've come.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I try not to look at just performances, but as
- 0:11Speaker 1: a person and how much I've grown, you know, emotionally, spiritually,
- 0:14Speaker 1: it's a really beautiful thing. If you're not growing anymore,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I feel like there's something wrong.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily a body here, last one, best one.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Okay, I'm not choosing favorites, but you are listening to
- 0:41Speaker 3: the final installment of this week's Turning the Page series
- 0:46Speaker 3: on Hurdle a while. This focused podcast where I talk
- 0:49Speaker 3: to inspirational people about everything from their highest ties and
- 0:52Speaker 3: toughest moments to essential tips on how to live a healthier, happier,
- 0:57Speaker 3: more motivated life. We all go through our fair share
- 1:01Speaker 3: of hurdles. My goal through these discussions is to empower
- 1:04Speaker 3: you to better navigate yours and move with intention so
- 1:08Speaker 3: that you can stride towards your own big potential.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And of course, have some fun along the way.
- 1:15Speaker 3: For this episode, number two hundred and eighty three, I
- 1:19Speaker 3: am chatting with Emma Bates. She is a professional runner
- 1:25Speaker 3: with a six and man, was.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So good to have the opportunity to catch up with her.
- 1:29Speaker 3: The last time we sat down for the show was
- 1:31Speaker 3: in Eugene back in summer of twenty twenty one. Wow,
- 1:36Speaker 3: time flies, and so much has happened since then.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Emma fills me in on the year that was, sharing.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Her highs and lows, chatting about her experience both in
- 1:50Speaker 3: Boston placing fifth and top overall American in the marathon,
- 1:55Speaker 3: and also the difficult time she had running the Chicago
- 2:00Speaker 3: Marathon this past October, tearing her plantern not so fun.
- 2:06Speaker 3: She also shares the highs and lows of home ownership,
- 2:10Speaker 3: having to deal with a plethora of unexpected things since
- 2:14Speaker 3: purchasing her new home in Boulder, forcing her and her animals,
- 2:19Speaker 3: including her two goats, to seek refuge in a couple
- 2:23Speaker 3: of different air b and bs. What I love most
- 2:27Speaker 3: about this conversation, though, is the through line of Emma's
- 2:30Speaker 3: power of perspective. This woman has been dealt some difficult
- 2:35Speaker 3: cards this year, but she still shows up day in
- 2:38Speaker 3: and day out with a smile on her face, thankful
- 2:42Speaker 3: for what she has and doing.
- 2:43Speaker 2: The best she can with where she's at.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I'm personally looking forward to cheering on Emma next month
- 2:50Speaker 3: at the US Olympic Marathon trials. Make sure you're following
- 2:56Speaker 3: along with Hurdle over on Socialists at Hurdle Podcast. I
- 2:59Speaker 3: am over Emily a body and special shout out to
- 3:03Speaker 3: the weekly Hurdle newsletter. It comes out today. If you're

- 3:16Speaker 2: It could not be more convenient.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Lastly, I want to give some love to the sponsors
- 3:22Speaker 3: that made the Turning the Page series possible. A six
- 3:27Speaker 3: and piper Ice, both instrumental in my day today. There
- 3:32Speaker 3: are exclusive offers from both of those brands in the
- 3:36Speaker 3: show notes.
- 3:37Speaker 2: With that, let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling today.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I'm sitting down with the one and only Emma Bates. Emma,
- 3:52Speaker 3: how you doing today?
- 3:53Speaker 4: I'm good? How are you?
- 3:55Speaker 3: I am good For those of you that might be
- 3:57Speaker 3: out of the loop, Emma freshly cut her own banks.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yes again, I'm glad that this is a podcast so
- 4:04Speaker 1: nobody can see them. They're not they're not great. I
- 4:08Speaker 1: did them myself, and as one probably shouldn't ever, but
- 4:12Speaker 1: especially in the state that I cut them in Yeah, Oh.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Is there something that we should know?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Oh?
- 4:19Speaker 4: These are stress bangs?
- 4:22Speaker 2: What's stressing you out these days?
- 4:25Speaker 1: So ran Chicago, which was less an ideal because I
- 4:30Speaker 1: ended up tearing my planner and just been dealing with
- 4:34Speaker 1: the remications of that. And now I have like some
- 4:39Speaker 1: post tip stuff. So I'm trying to run. I'm trying
- 4:42Speaker 1: to get ready for the Olympic trials at our February third,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and it's just been an uphill battle ever since Chicago,
- 4:48Speaker 1: basically before Chicago though, to be honest, it's been a
- 4:52Speaker 1: weird past few months, if I'm being real.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And.
- 4:58Speaker 3: So when something like this pops up, not only the
- 5:01Speaker 3: planter chair, but then you said dealing with some tib stuff.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I love that phrase tib stuff. But when these things happen,
- 5:09Speaker 3: where does your mental state go? Is it immediately frantic
- 5:14Speaker 3: and then calm or calm until there's a reason to
- 5:16Speaker 3: be frantic? Like how do you usually react in these
- 5:19Speaker 3: situations of the uncontrollable?
- 5:22Speaker 1: I am usually pretty calm off the bat, and then
- 5:26Speaker 1: I start to have my moments where I freak out.
- 5:29Speaker 1: So I just they're very fleeting, but when they wash
- 5:34Speaker 1: over me, they're really intense, and I just, like, you know,
- 5:38Speaker 1: one day, completely lost it and like the whole day
- 5:41Speaker 1: was just like just dreadful. It just felt like, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: impending doom was upon me, and it's just like where
- 5:48Speaker 1: is this coming from? But I think I start to
- 5:50Speaker 1: like bottle things up inside. I try to like not
- 5:54Speaker 1: be like a burden, not only to like myself, but
- 5:57Speaker 1: to like others, and so like I try to like
- 6:00Speaker 1: act like everything's okay, and like on the surface it
- 6:03Speaker 1: is fine, but then I start to like look inward
- 6:06Speaker 1: and like really start to reflect on the way that
- 6:08Speaker 1: I'm feeling, and then that's when I kind of lose it.
- 6:11Speaker 4: And I really need.
- 6:13Speaker 1: To be better about like kind of talking through my
- 6:15Speaker 1: feelings as I'm having them with people. But it is
- 6:19Speaker 1: just something that I need to, you know, get better at.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And we all kind of like push things down because
- 6:25Speaker 1: everybody has something going on.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You don't want to be that person that's always like
- 6:29Speaker 1: complaining about something or this and that. So I try
- 6:32Speaker 1: to just compartmentalize a little bit and then have my
- 6:35Speaker 1: moments to release all of that. So that day that
- 6:39Speaker 1: I felt the impending doom upon me, I just like
- 6:41Speaker 1: cried all day, and it felt so good. It was
- 6:44Speaker 1: very cathartic. And so then the next day I just
- 6:46Speaker 1: get up and do my thing again. Like we're just
- 6:49Speaker 1: you know, we have to just keep moving along. And yeah,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I have like amazing people in my life in order
- 6:55Speaker 1: for me to like want to get up in the
- 6:57Speaker 1: morning and want to start my day and talk to
- 6:59Speaker 1: those people. So that's what I end up having to
- 7:03Speaker 1: do to try to like get myself out of like
- 7:05Speaker 1: a funky space. Is just like, you know, I have
- 7:07Speaker 1: a lot of people that care about me and want
- 7:09Speaker 1: to talk to me.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, Okay, I love that. Emma's going deep right
- 7:13Speaker 3: from the echo. I'm here for it. So a couple
- 7:15Speaker 3: of things is doublequick on one I love. Although I
- 7:19Speaker 3: know this part of the process is hard. The day
- 7:22Speaker 3: that I'm going to feel all of my feelings, I too,
- 7:26Speaker 3: And I'm sure many people listening to this can relate
- 7:28Speaker 3: to that sentiment. I don't want to be a burden
- 7:31Speaker 3: for others, so let me just be in my own
- 7:33Speaker 3: ball of emotions. But so often we almost get down
- 7:39Speaker 3: on ourselves for wanting to simply experience those emotions at all.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that's that's the toughest challenge is like,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you know, you try to be like this adult that
- 7:51Speaker 1: has their shit together, and you know, I'm great, and like,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you know, there's so many other like things going on
- 7:57Speaker 1: in the world and like, my you know, small issue
- 8:00Speaker 1: is nothing compared to like what's going on out there,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and so I try to, like you know, remind myself
- 8:05Speaker 1: and give myself perspective. It's like, yes, you can give
- 8:08Speaker 1: yourself some grace sometimes, but yeah, like you know, your
- 8:12Speaker 1: life isn't hard, You're fine, you know, so that kind
- 8:14Speaker 1: of gets me out of that, you know, of just
- 8:16Speaker 1: funky space is just like knowing that it could always
- 8:19Speaker 1: be worse, you know, Like the perspective of that is
- 8:22Speaker 1: really important. But allowing yourself to feel your feels because
- 8:25Speaker 1: we all have, you know, our stuff and our issues,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and so I think that's something that everybody needs to
- 8:31Speaker 1: be little just respect yourself and respect that you need
- 8:35Speaker 1: to go through those emotions.
- 8:37Speaker 3: It's like a yes and moment. It's like, yes, respect yourself,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and also you're allowed to feel right because God, have
- 8:46Speaker 3: you ever actually known someone who constantly has their shit together?
- 8:50Speaker 3: And it's true to be facts, Like it's not just
- 8:54Speaker 3: a facade. I don't personally know anyone that has all
- 8:57Speaker 3: of their shit together all the time. Yet we guilt
- 8:59Speaker 3: ourself into this place where we're like, well, that's how
- 9:02Speaker 3: I should be though, right exactly.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And that's the problem with social media is everybody's posting,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know, ten percent of their life that's like all
- 9:10Speaker 1: the happy moments and whatnot, and not very many people post,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know, the sad stuff or the stuff that's bothering them.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And like, I think that's where we get into weird
- 9:19Speaker 1: headspaces where we're like, yeah, like everybody else gets it
- 9:22Speaker 1: and knows what they're doing, like what's wrong with me?
- 9:25Speaker 1: But no, No, even the people that like I admire
- 9:28Speaker 1: the most that come off as like the strongest people
- 9:31Speaker 1: still have you know, those those days. And like Emma Coburn,
- 9:34Speaker 1: for instance, my teammate is just like the strong, one
- 9:36Speaker 1: of the strongest women I've ever met in my life,
- 9:38Speaker 1: but like, you know, she has her moments where you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: things need to kind of slow down and she needs
- 9:43Speaker 1: to be in her own space. And that's incredible that
- 9:46Speaker 1: she I have somebody like that. I mean, all my
- 9:49Speaker 1: teammates are so good about, like, you know, being these
- 9:52Speaker 1: tough you know, independent, strong women, but then being vulnerable
- 9:56Speaker 1: at the same time, and it allows you to, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: kind of have that space for yourself and give yourself
- 10:02Speaker 1: that grace knowing that all these amazing women that you
- 10:05Speaker 1: look up to and admire are doing the same thing.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Like you said before, knowing that there are people in
- 10:10Speaker 3: your life that you can be open and vulnerable with
- 10:13Speaker 3: really helps you show up on the days that everything
- 10:16Speaker 3: does feel like it's collapsing in around you. I feel
- 10:20Speaker 3: like this discussion easily segueing us into one of the
- 10:23Speaker 3: first questions I want to ask you as we do
- 10:25Speaker 3: a little bit of reflection over the past year, if
- 10:28Speaker 3: you had to choose a theme for twenty twenty three,
- 10:32Speaker 3: now that we are headfirst into twenty twenty four, what
- 10:36Speaker 3: do you think your theme of the year would be.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I would say positivity, because there's been so many weird
- 10:45Speaker 1: things going on and I've tried to be like see
- 10:49Speaker 1: the positive factors of it all, so like breaking it
- 10:53Speaker 1: down and like, you know, Chicago was a rough one,
- 10:55Speaker 1: but finding all the things that I can learn from
- 10:58Speaker 1: it and turning it into a posit or this injury,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know, this injury is really tough and I'm going
- 11:03Speaker 1: through a lot, but I'm trying to find the positive
- 11:05Speaker 1: stuff that I'm like learning from it. And so you know,
- 11:09Speaker 1: Boston was such a great experience and everything went perfectly,
- 11:13Speaker 1: so trying to hold on to that and like seeing
- 11:15Speaker 1: the positive nature that that was and what went right
- 11:18Speaker 1: and kind of going off of that. So yeah, just
- 11:21Speaker 1: like trying to project positivity in order to like kind
- 11:26Speaker 1: of bring it back. So not being negative like I
- 11:29Speaker 1: think I've gotten, you know, in the past, where I
- 11:31Speaker 1: like get bogged down by you know, things that are
- 11:33Speaker 1: hard or like things that like I think are unfair,
- 11:36Speaker 1: and it's just it starts to ruminate and then like
- 11:40Speaker 1: the universe starts to like give you more and more
- 11:42Speaker 1: and more because you know, you are kind of projecting
- 11:45Speaker 1: that and so rejecting positivity. It just I see it
- 11:49Speaker 1: everywhere now. So like even if I'm going through a
- 11:52Speaker 1: hard time, as long as like I'm staying positive and
- 11:55Speaker 1: knowing that there will be progress, I see it everywhere,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know, And that's like such a wonderful way to look.
- 12:01Speaker 4: At the world.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And it's really easy when you have two little, positive
- 12:07Speaker 1: little animals jumping around and doing their thing. Having two
- 12:11Speaker 1: goats has been the most wonderful thing that I think
- 12:14Speaker 1: has happened in twenty twenty three.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I thought goats were going to be theme of twenty
- 12:18Speaker 3: twenty three, honestly, but I thought that you brought.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It into the full not me.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Thelma and Louise, the two goats that joined the Bates
- 12:27Speaker 3: household in twenty twenty three. I know you've talked about
- 12:30Speaker 3: them on podcasts. Before you talk about them and show
- 12:33Speaker 3: them on social media. For anyone maybe new to you
- 12:36Speaker 3: or unfamiliar with the fact that you have goats in
- 12:39Speaker 3: your possession, please tell them what prompted this decision.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So my boyfriend Steve and I we ended up buying
- 12:47Speaker 1: a house together in Boulder, Colorado, and have a bit
- 12:52Speaker 1: of land, but it's like so overgrown and like it's
- 12:55Speaker 1: just it's messy. So I thought a great idea would
- 12:59Speaker 1: be to get goats because they're, you know, natural lawnmowers,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and so he was like, yeah, like someday we could
- 13:07Speaker 1: get them, and I took that as green light, and
- 13:10Speaker 1: I wanted to ended up and wind and got them
- 13:14Speaker 1: at a farm and then brought them home that same
- 13:16Speaker 1: day and then didn't tell him for a couple of weeks,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and then he came to visit and lo and behold,
- 13:21Speaker 1: we have goats now, And they were like a month old.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Had to like bottle feed them for another month, and
- 13:27Speaker 1: like they are just the kookiest little creatures ever. Like
- 13:32Speaker 1: I was obsessed with goats before, but like I want
- 13:35Speaker 1: all of the goats now.
- 13:36Speaker 4: They are so much fun.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I love the language.
- 13:40Speaker 3: So I took this as a green light, and I
- 13:42Speaker 3: decided on the same day to get some goats. Would
- 13:45Speaker 3: you say that you are a pretty impulsive person.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Absolutely, one hundred percent.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It's a problem, and they have it seems to be
- 13:56Speaker 3: by the way that you talk about them brought you
- 13:58Speaker 3: so much joy, so echoing again that positivity outlook, you
- 14:01Speaker 3: bring this positivity into your home, you're more likely to
- 14:05Speaker 3: see that not only throughout your home, but then when
- 14:08Speaker 3: you leave and so on.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 14:10Speaker 1: No, I mean, it's just such a good reminder that
- 14:12Speaker 1: like to kind of slow down and live, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: moment by moment instead of you know, living in the future.
- 14:18Speaker 1: It just really grounds me. And just having them just
- 14:23Speaker 1: enjoy life so fully every day. Animals are just amazing
- 14:27Speaker 1: in that way, like animals children, I mean, they just
- 14:30Speaker 1: like they're so pure and innocent and lovely. So I
- 14:34Speaker 1: am just so so lucky to have them all.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Right, So theme of the year positivity. Let's go now
- 14:40Speaker 3: to proudest moment of the year. I'm interested to know
- 14:43Speaker 3: or to hear where you go with this one because I.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Have some thoughts.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But yeah, proudest moment of the year, Emma.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So, I feel like a lot of people would think
- 14:54Speaker 1: Boston performance was, you know, the highlight of the year.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I I had the race for most of the way
- 15:02Speaker 1: and ended up taking fifth, which was amazing, pring by
- 15:05Speaker 1: like a minute. That was really special and a lot
- 15:09Speaker 1: of people took notice of that, and that was I
- 15:12Speaker 1: took a lot of pride in that. But I wouldn't
- 15:14Speaker 1: say that is my biggest accomplishment of the year. I
- 15:18Speaker 1: really do think that Chicago was a better performance for
- 15:25Speaker 1: me than Boston, and a lot of people don't understand
- 15:28Speaker 1: that or appreciate that. But going into Chicago was really
- 15:34Speaker 1: challenging in the like personal side of it. Like I
- 15:40Speaker 1: was just really stressed going into Chicago. We bought a
- 15:43Speaker 1: house in the summer, Steve and I, but there were
- 15:46Speaker 1: so many problems with it and I ended up being
- 15:48Speaker 1: displaced from the home for like the full month leading
- 15:51Speaker 1: into Chicago, and that was just a really stressful time
- 15:55Speaker 1: and it's hard for me to like really be in
- 15:57Speaker 1: my right mindset when I'm in my home and like
- 16:01Speaker 1: my animals are kind of all over the place, like
- 16:03Speaker 1: I had to find people to watch them while I
- 16:05Speaker 1: was staying in airbnbs and hotels and whatnot, and so
- 16:09Speaker 1: I just felt unsettled. So going into that race, like
- 16:12Speaker 1: I was really excited and very fit, but I knew
- 16:15Speaker 1: that there was some you know, underlying like stress there.
- 16:19Speaker 1: And then getting halfway through that race in like you know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: pring in the half marathon in route to you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: the full marathon was insane, Like that was a really
- 16:30Speaker 1: big deal for me. But then hurting my foot in
- 16:34Speaker 1: the race and not only finishing that race, but finishing
- 16:39Speaker 1: it in like a two twenty five time and you know,
- 16:42Speaker 1: still one of the top Americans.
- 16:44Speaker 4: You know, I think I took thirteenth.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Like to me, that is like such a big performance
- 16:50Speaker 1: and a bigger accomplishment than Boston because I got through that,
- 16:53Speaker 1: like I was stressed and I was really injured, and
- 16:58Speaker 1: I still was able to pull through and finish that
- 17:02Speaker 1: and be proud of it, Like I look back, and
- 17:05Speaker 1: I'm I'm bummed that it kind of played out the
- 17:08Speaker 1: way it did, but I'm still like incredibly proud of
- 17:11Speaker 1: myself and didn't realize that I could do such a
- 17:14Speaker 1: hard task. So just finding a new level of respect
- 17:19Speaker 1: and strength in myself was probably the biggest accomplishment.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I love hearing that, and it is so interesting, right.
- 17:27Speaker 3: It's not that we can't learn from some of our
- 17:30Speaker 3: highest moments, but it usually is the ones that are
- 17:34Speaker 3: truly difficult, the ones where sometimes we may feel as
- 17:37Speaker 3: though there's an ounce of failure to it that those
- 17:41Speaker 3: moments are the ones that really give us something to
- 17:44Speaker 3: think about, to learn from and move forward. And that's
- 17:47Speaker 3: exactly what you did with a tough time in Chicago.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean on paper, it like doesn't look
- 17:54Speaker 1: like anything to anybody, but the real ones know that,
- 17:58Speaker 1: like the stuff that I was under and like still
- 18:01Speaker 1: am under with just everything you know going on right
- 18:04Speaker 1: now is something that like really is meaningful to me.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So people can show up for you on your best
- 18:13Speaker 1: days and like that's great, Like that's awesome, but it's
- 18:15Speaker 1: on your you know, lesson ideal days or worse days
- 18:18Speaker 1: that really mean a lot to me. And the amount
- 18:21Speaker 1: of people that reached out to me and just you know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: the amount of people that like can relate to a
- 18:26Speaker 1: bad race too as opposed to a good race is insane.
- 18:30Speaker 1: So like just hearing other people's stories and knowing that
- 18:34Speaker 1: there are others out there that are going through similar
- 18:36Speaker 1: challenges or injuries or whatever they may be going through
- 18:40Speaker 1: is really something that I appreciated in this year. Is
- 18:45Speaker 1: just like talking to people and kind of like sharing
- 18:47Speaker 1: and relating stories with one another and hearing how you know,
- 18:52Speaker 1: resilient other people are, and that just gives me a
- 18:54Speaker 1: lot of inspiration and hope.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 18:57Speaker 3: There's a statistic that's something like eighty percent of our
- 19:01Speaker 3: thoughts throughout the day somehow are typically negative, which is
- 19:05Speaker 3: absolutely frightening, right, So to know that yes, I am
- 19:10Speaker 3: feeling some kind of way, I'm having these not so
- 19:12Speaker 3: stellar thoughts, to know that in those situations, you are
- 19:15Speaker 3: not the only one that these vulnerable moments, these difficult moments,
- 19:20Speaker 3: they are generally more relatable for a reason because those
- 19:24Speaker 3: are most of the feelings, the moments that all of
- 19:27Speaker 3: us are dealing with all the regular Yeah.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think it's so fun to do the
- 19:31Speaker 1: race recaps that I do on Instagram. I have like
- 19:34Speaker 1: a seventeen part series on you know, all my races
- 19:38Speaker 1: that I do, my marathons, and I like to share
- 19:40Speaker 1: the thoughts that are going through my head. And it's
- 19:42Speaker 1: so funny because I think these are, you know, thoughts
- 19:45Speaker 1: that everybody has. But then people start to tell you, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 1: like I didn't realize that, you know, elite runners have
- 19:51Speaker 1: these same thoughts and same you know issues going on
- 19:55Speaker 1: and troubles and hardships you know, throughout the race or
- 19:58Speaker 1: you know, before the race even and so it's so
- 20:00Speaker 1: funny that, like we are all so connected and so
- 20:04Speaker 1: much alike, like we are all going through, you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: the similar things when we're running a marathon, Like it's
- 20:11Speaker 1: always hard for everybody, but it's funny putting it into
- 20:14Speaker 1: into words. People are like, wow, like that's that's insane.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Like I had all those same thoughts and same feelings,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and it really is a metaphor for life.
- 20:22Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 20:23Speaker 3: You before you were talking about being a little bit
- 20:27Speaker 3: all over the place, out of your routine because of
- 20:29Speaker 3: what's going on with the house and your living situation.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I think that concept of feeling a little bit sporadic,
- 20:36Speaker 3: being a little bit all over the place, especially coming
- 20:38Speaker 3: off of the holidays, maybe not being in your normal
- 20:41Speaker 3: routine really really relatable stuff. When you aren't in your
- 20:46Speaker 3: normal routine, maybe it's because you are traveling for work,
- 20:50Speaker 3: traveling to race, or doing whatever it is. What recommendations
- 20:54Speaker 3: do you have for someone so that they can feel
- 20:56Speaker 3: better in their own body when they're out of their element.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's just trying to find something that
- 21:02Speaker 1: does ground you, whatever that may be.
- 21:05Speaker 4: It's like, I.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Am really attached to my routine, so whenever I am,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, at other places, like I'm at a airbnb
- 21:15Speaker 1: right now because I'm still displaced for my house. But
- 21:17Speaker 1: it's like trying to find little things to make sure that,
- 21:20Speaker 1: like I feel like a bit of normalcy. So just
- 21:25Speaker 1: trying to like I really enjoy mornings, So I've been
- 21:28Speaker 1: waking up really early in the morning to go and
- 21:32Speaker 1: work out and do my thing, and I love the
- 21:35Speaker 1: morning ritual, so like having coffee and toast and everything
- 21:38Speaker 1: like that. So just finding like little things to make
- 21:41Speaker 1: you excited to like get up in the morning, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: those are the little things that I like to do.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But if you're like on the go or traveling, you know,
- 21:49Speaker 1: I mean, just like treating yourself to whatever it is
- 21:52Speaker 1: that you look forward to, like if it's at the airport.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Like for me, whenever I go to the airport for
- 21:57Speaker 1: some reason, I have to have like a bag of
- 21:58Speaker 1: Eminem's And that's just like.
- 22:00Speaker 4: What I do.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And so I get excited to, like, you know, go
- 22:02Speaker 1: to the airport and get my bag of Eminem's, and
- 22:04Speaker 1: I think, I'm so like, I mean, this is so
- 22:06Speaker 1: many people but so virtualistic, and so I don't know,
- 22:09Speaker 1: I look forward to the same thing over and over again,
- 22:13Speaker 1: but I know that's what I enjoy and it does
- 22:16Speaker 1: ground me and it makes me feel like I have
- 22:18Speaker 1: a sense of control or a sense of normalcy.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love

- 24:25Speaker 3: getting down on yourself about romanticizing your own life. I
- 24:29Speaker 3: think it's awesome that, Like you have this tradition where
- 24:31Speaker 3: you buy a bag of eminem to the airport. I
- 24:33Speaker 3: have this weird tradition that whenever I'm on the way
- 24:37Speaker 3: home from a trip, I write a letter to someone
- 24:40Speaker 3: in my life. Like I have a journal that's just
- 24:42Speaker 3: letters to people. I think I've only ever sent one.
- 24:44Speaker 3: I've been doing this for I mean longer than I
- 24:47Speaker 3: can remember now. But we all have these small things
- 24:51Speaker 3: that are routines that help us just stay grounded and
- 24:55Speaker 3: the chaos that is going on all the time. You
- 24:58Speaker 3: shared a little bit about this post to nagging situation.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Would you say that's been one of your most difficult
- 25:05Speaker 3: moments of the year.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I think it's one of but it's mostly so with
- 25:11Speaker 1: the house situation and everything. We had, like a bunch
- 25:14Speaker 1: of leaks in the house. We brought in like a
- 25:16Speaker 1: plumping company, and they ended up finding asbestos, but they
- 25:22Speaker 1: didn't find the asbesis until there was an asbestos spill,
- 25:25Speaker 1: so I ended up they ended up having to throw
- 25:28Speaker 1: away all of my belongings. So that was really difficult
- 25:32Speaker 1: to just like not have anything in my house anymore,
- 25:36Speaker 1: like everything's gone. So that was really really tough, and
- 25:40Speaker 1: that was stressful, and that was definitely weighing on me.
- 25:43Speaker 1: But going through an injury it's hard, but there's like
- 25:49Speaker 1: progress and small, like little victories that you can kind
- 25:53Speaker 1: of like gear towards and be excited about. So I've
- 25:56Speaker 1: never been seriously injured before, but this is a whole
- 26:00Speaker 1: new adventure, and I'm like treating it as like an adventure.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Like it's exciting because you know, I get to like
- 26:07Speaker 1: test myself and test my mental fortitude or my physical fortitude,
- 26:12Speaker 1: and that is something that I've never had to do before.
- 26:14Speaker 1: So like going to our gym every day, you know,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and I'm like on the bike for like two hours,
- 26:19Speaker 1: and I'm like realizing, like wow, like I am putting
- 26:24Speaker 1: in a lot of you know, time and effort here
- 26:27Speaker 1: and I'm going to see like progress eventually. And so
- 26:30Speaker 1: I have seen so much progress. And with this post
- 26:33Speaker 1: tip stuff, it's like, Okay, we're gonna have to take
- 26:36Speaker 1: some time off and get some strength exercises going. And
- 26:39Speaker 1: so I just kind of focus on those strength exercises
- 26:42Speaker 1: and try to get better at those and then kind
- 26:44Speaker 1: of see like small progresses every day every week. You know,
- 26:48Speaker 1: you're just like really focus on the here and now,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and that's kind of gotten me through the day to day.
- 26:53Speaker 1: It seems monotonous on the outside, but there's there're these
- 26:56Speaker 1: small things that you can like really focus on and
- 26:58Speaker 1: that's kind of gotten me through. And that's been the
- 27:01Speaker 1: exciting part of this injury process is just like something
- 27:04Speaker 1: new every day to focus on.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Quote the exciting part of this injury process for play.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I'm so sorry to hear about the complications with the house.
- 27:12Speaker 3: I cannot even fathom what it's got to feel like
- 27:15Speaker 3: to kind of start from zero. Listening to you talk
- 27:19Speaker 3: about your mindset despite things being in a way that
- 27:22Speaker 3: you hope that they weren't, it's so beautiful to hear
- 27:26Speaker 3: the acceptance of where you're at. And I believe that
- 27:30Speaker 3: many people this is the foundational issue, right It's a
- 27:34Speaker 3: resistance to embrace what is and wanting something that isn't.
- 27:39Speaker 3: And by being in this place of embracing what is now,
- 27:43Speaker 3: you have the upper hand. You have the opportunity to
- 27:46Speaker 3: do all of this reframing, which you're doing so well
- 27:49Speaker 3: and then learn from this difficult situation. But you can't
- 27:52Speaker 3: get to this place where you're actually capable of learning
- 27:55Speaker 3: until you truly accept this is how it is now.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Yeah, And that's like the beauty of it is, Like you,
- 28:03Speaker 1: there's so many things in this world that we can't control,
- 28:05Speaker 1: but we can control our attitude. And I think that's
- 28:08Speaker 1: something that you know, so many people kind of lose
- 28:11Speaker 1: sight of. It's like you could be like, oh my gosh,
- 28:14Speaker 1: I can't believe this is happening to me. It's like, well,
- 28:18Speaker 1: we maybe reframe it and be like, why is this
- 28:20Speaker 1: happening to me? And maybe I need to learn something
- 28:22Speaker 1: throughout this process and maybe this is my opportunity to grow.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And that's like something that I've always kind of tried
- 28:28Speaker 1: to reframe and get perspective on, Like when my father
- 28:31Speaker 1: died in twenty sixteen, I tried to be like instead
- 28:34Speaker 1: of why.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Me, why me? Why me? And why him?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Why?
- 28:37Speaker 4: Why are family? Why this?
- 28:38Speaker 1: And that it was more like let's see what you
- 28:41Speaker 1: know the universe kind of wants us to like figure
- 28:43Speaker 1: out throughout this whole process. And then getting a divorce
- 28:46Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, it was like, you know, I made
- 28:49Speaker 1: sure to realize, like this is happening for a reason.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You know, I'm a firm believer, and like everything happens
- 28:56Speaker 1: for a reason. That's kind of like my spirituality and
- 28:58Speaker 1: like trying to accept what the universe has given you
- 29:02Speaker 1: and make your way through it and try to figure
- 29:05Speaker 1: out what it is that it's trying to tell you.
- 29:08Speaker 1: And that's something that has been a huge factor in
- 29:12Speaker 1: my life and has brought me to be the person
- 29:14Speaker 1: that I am today. And I'm still learning and still
- 29:17Speaker 1: growing and I'm never done learning and growing.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for sharing that. It also brought you again
- 29:23Speaker 3: to goats. So really this is a win situation.
- 29:27Speaker 2: I know this is.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Kind of land mind to drop on you, but I'm
- 29:32Speaker 3: going to try it here. You know, Times Person of
- 29:35Speaker 3: the Year was Taylor Swift. If Emma Bates had to
- 29:39Speaker 3: choose a person of the Year from twenty twenty three,
- 29:43Speaker 3: who would Emmabates choose?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, she really putting me on the spot
- 29:48Speaker 1: that I know. I mean, def so as lovely as
- 29:52Speaker 1: Taylor Swift is, I don't really think she should have
- 29:55Speaker 1: been to a Person of the Year, but there's a
- 29:59Speaker 1: lot of people doing a lot more in this world,
- 30:03Speaker 1: and people that I don't even know that are doing
- 30:07Speaker 1: a lot in this world. And I think it should
- 30:09Speaker 1: be that person that nobody knows about that's doing the most.
- 30:12Speaker 1: And so whoever that may be, I don't think I
- 30:15Speaker 1: have like a specific person, But.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Who do you think has been really instrumental in helping
- 30:21Speaker 3: you keep this mindset that is so valuable.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I would say, like my teammates are always people that
- 30:28Speaker 1: I really look up to. My coach is somebody that
- 30:31Speaker 1: has great perspective on not just training, but on life,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and they realize that, you know, it's not just about running,
- 30:37Speaker 1: it's about you as a person and everything going on.
- 30:41Speaker 1: And I think that I've really been able to be
- 30:46Speaker 1: in the mindset that I am because of just watching
- 30:49Speaker 1: them kind of navigate through life and navigate through their
- 30:52Speaker 1: injuries or troubles or things like that. And I think,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you know, having a very strong relationship also has helped
- 31:01Speaker 1: me find meaning and positivity in a way that I
- 31:06Speaker 1: never did before. I think being in a really healthy
- 31:09Speaker 1: relationship means a lot. I was in a very toxic
- 31:12Speaker 1: relationship for a very long time, and it just makes
- 31:15Speaker 1: you realize like how bogged down you are by that,
- 31:19Speaker 1: and like how you can't really look outward and you're
- 31:22Speaker 1: not able to extend yourself just because you're kind of
- 31:25Speaker 1: going through like this really tough you know, like time
- 31:30Speaker 1: with yourself and that relationship that is like just kind
- 31:33Speaker 1: of bringing you down and you're not really able to
- 31:36Speaker 1: see who you're meant to be or who you are
- 31:39Speaker 1: because that, you know, toxicity. So that has helped me
- 31:44Speaker 1: a lot. Also being in a relationship with somebody that
- 31:46Speaker 1: like really understands running and understands what running and life
- 31:51Speaker 1: balance need. And it's not just about performance or this
- 31:55Speaker 1: and that. It's about you know, like how you are
- 31:57Speaker 1: truly feeling as an individual and trying to build yourself
- 32:03Speaker 1: as not just a runner, but as a person and beyond.
- 32:06Speaker 1: And that has been a big difference in just like
- 32:10Speaker 1: how I view myself, Like knowing that this person thinks
- 32:14Speaker 1: I'm so strong and so you know, has a lot
- 32:17Speaker 1: more to give than just you know, running performances or
- 32:20Speaker 1: times or this and that, even like social media, Like
- 32:23Speaker 1: there's just so much more to a person. So like
- 32:27Speaker 1: knowing that I am that to somebody is huge.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Again.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Sometimes you know, you say something, and it kind of
- 32:33Speaker 3: takes me aback because I'm thinking of the person who's
- 32:35Speaker 3: listening to this, and maybe they can really relate so
- 32:38Speaker 3: speaking so openly about how you feel as though you're
- 32:42Speaker 3: in a much better place now, being in a healthy
- 32:44Speaker 3: relationship with the perspective that you have now looking back
- 32:48Speaker 3: on twenty twenty and before that. What advice would you
- 32:53Speaker 3: offer to someone who feels as though maybe they're spinning
- 32:55Speaker 3: their wheels in the mud, stuck in something that's a
- 32:57Speaker 3: bit more toxic.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Let go of that toxicity if you can. I mean,
- 33:02Speaker 1: it's really hard to become aware of it, so when
- 33:05Speaker 1: you're in it, it's really hard to see.
- 33:09Speaker 4: I don't know when.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Basically, like something big had to happen for me to
- 33:14Speaker 1: realize how toxic that relationship was and how rough it
- 33:18Speaker 1: was on my psyche and like my growth as a person.
- 33:23Speaker 1: So once that big thing happened, I was able to
- 33:27Speaker 1: then see things from the outside.
- 33:29Speaker 4: So many people.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Had told me about how toxic it seemed, and I
- 33:35Speaker 1: didn't listen. So it's really hard to be there for
- 33:38Speaker 1: somebody when they don't want to hear it. You're just
- 33:40Speaker 1: kind of always looking at those things in Rose colored lenses,
- 33:44Speaker 1: and that's that's really tough. So you really have to
- 33:48Speaker 1: take a step back in order to see what is
- 33:51Speaker 1: actually going going on. And that's so much easier said
- 33:55Speaker 1: than done. So you just have to know that you
- 33:58Speaker 1: deserve more.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Deep down.
- 34:01Speaker 1: We know, like I had such a gut feeling for
- 34:04Speaker 1: so long about how toxic this relationship was, but I
- 34:08Speaker 1: didn't I didn't act on it. I didn't trust myself.
- 34:11Speaker 1: So I guess that's the biggest thing, is like trusting
- 34:14Speaker 1: yourself and trusting that that gut feeling, those red flags
- 34:18Speaker 1: that are you know, kind of going off in your
- 34:19Speaker 1: head are there for a reason, Like something is wrong
- 34:22Speaker 1: here and you need to either get out or change something.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and this even circles back to our conversation when
- 34:30Speaker 3: we were talking about injury before right and getting to
- 34:32Speaker 3: a place where you admit and come to terms with
- 34:35Speaker 3: what is so that you can take appropriate action to
- 34:38Speaker 3: step forward. These lessons that we learn, they're not isolated, right,
- 34:43Speaker 3: they happen, These moments, they happen. I'll buy albeit maybe
- 34:47Speaker 3: they're difficult, but for us so that we can take
- 34:49Speaker 3: that knowledge and use it. So knowing that a it's
- 34:54Speaker 3: completely understandable that you feel trapped or unsure or whatever
- 34:58Speaker 3: the case may be, but then be that you have
- 35:01Speaker 3: an opportunity to do something about that. Those are two
- 35:04Speaker 3: really valuable lessons to learn to then be able to
- 35:07Speaker 3: move forward. Absolutely, yeah, absolutely, So now, Emma, what excites you?
- 35:13Speaker 2: What's exciting you right now?
- 35:15Speaker 1: I'm really excited about. Like the path that I'm going
- 35:19Speaker 1: to be on is such a different path and what
- 35:22Speaker 1: I thought I was going to be on, And that's
- 35:24Speaker 1: that's always really exciting too. Like, you know, everything with
- 35:27Speaker 1: the house, you know, it's completely torn apart, but now
- 35:30Speaker 1: we get to start fresh, and now we get to
- 35:33Speaker 1: make it our own. And now I get to you know,
- 35:36Speaker 1: go and you know, buy all these different things, like
- 35:39Speaker 1: different clothes and shoes and all this stuff that like,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, just trying to find the opportunities that the
- 35:45Speaker 1: world has given me. And obviously being injured isn't the
- 35:48Speaker 1: most ideal thing going into the Olympic trials, but this
- 35:51Speaker 1: is something so different and unique and I can really
- 35:55Speaker 1: not prove myself, but maybe prove to myself that I
- 35:59Speaker 1: can go through something like this and still come out
- 36:02Speaker 1: on top. However that may be. I don't really care
- 36:05Speaker 1: how I do at Olympic trials. But I just want
- 36:07Speaker 1: to do my very best and know that like I
- 36:09Speaker 1: laid it all out there, I did everything I could
- 36:11Speaker 1: along this way to get to that starting line in
- 36:14Speaker 1: the best way that I could. So that's that's something
- 36:18Speaker 1: really just making me excited to get up in the
- 36:21Speaker 1: morning is just like what is today going to bring?
- 36:23Speaker 1: You know, Like I don't know. It could be bit good,
- 36:25Speaker 1: it could be bad, but let's just let's just see.
- 36:28Speaker 1: And that's that's life, you know, like you never really
- 36:30Speaker 1: know what's.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Going to happen.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate the thought process on I'm going to
- 36:36Speaker 3: do what my best is on that day. Meeting again
- 36:40Speaker 3: yourself with where you're at. It's so easy to hold
- 36:43Speaker 3: ourselves to either a previous standard or maybe something that's
- 36:47Speaker 3: not entirely rooted in realism, Right, but just show up
- 36:53Speaker 3: in February and say today I'm going to give what
- 36:56Speaker 3: I have in this moment. There's a lot of grace
- 36:59Speaker 3: and that's just a really beautiful approach to have.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think because I'm so happy in my
- 37:07Speaker 1: personal life, like even with all this chaos going around,
- 37:09Speaker 1: like I'm still the happiest I've ever been so realizing
- 37:12Speaker 1: that it doesn't matter the outcome on that day, Like
- 37:15Speaker 1: I'm still going to be that same person. I'm still
- 37:17Speaker 1: going to be happy and like have all these wonderful
- 37:20Speaker 1: things to go off of, and it's not just yeah,
- 37:22Speaker 1: one race doesn't define you.
- 37:25Speaker 2: We love happy. Emma.
- 37:26Speaker 3: You said you're on trajectory right now that is completely
- 37:30Speaker 3: different than you ever imagined.
- 37:32Speaker 2: How so.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I mean, I've never been injured before, so this is
- 37:36Speaker 1: like such a different thing for me. And I kind
- 37:40Speaker 1: of envisioned, like, you know, from the previous Olympic trials,
- 37:44Speaker 1: like I really thought I was going to make that
- 37:46Speaker 1: team in twenty twenty and I didn't, And I thought,
- 37:49Speaker 1: you know, like if I just you know, put myself
- 37:52Speaker 1: into training and get better, that it was just going
- 37:55Speaker 1: to happen, like, you know, just naturally. But it makes
- 37:59Speaker 1: you really like just because you you know, you put
- 38:02Speaker 1: in the work and everything, doesn't mean like you have
- 38:05Speaker 1: entitlement to it. So again, there's all these people vying for,
- 38:09Speaker 1: you know, a top three spot for the Olympics, and yeah,
- 38:13Speaker 1: I mean it could go to anybody, and that's something
- 38:16Speaker 1: that you have to be okay with. And I don't
- 38:18Speaker 1: think that's a mindset I would have had if I
- 38:19Speaker 1: didn't have an injury going into it. I don't think
- 38:22Speaker 1: if Chicago went the way it did. I think if
- 38:24Speaker 1: I performed the way that I could have, like on
- 38:28Speaker 1: my best day, I think I just would have been like,
- 38:31Speaker 1: oh yeah, this this spot is mine, like the top
- 38:34Speaker 1: three spots. So it levels you, you know, it humbles you,
- 38:38Speaker 1: and it makes you realize, like you know, the marathon
- 38:41Speaker 1: doesn't owe you anything, the world doesn't owe you anything.
- 38:44Speaker 1: You have to keep like, you know, grinding it out
- 38:47Speaker 1: and work hard and at the end of the day,
- 38:50Speaker 1: your best is all there is. And so that's again
- 38:53Speaker 1: just a beautiful thing to learn about life, you know,
- 38:57Speaker 1: Like I just I'm just trying to keep that rhythm
- 39:01Speaker 1: of just you know, as long as I do what
- 39:05Speaker 1: I can, that's it, you know, that's all.
- 39:07Speaker 4: I do.
- 39:08Speaker 3: The best you can with what you have. What is
- 39:12Speaker 3: something that you want to do more of? In twenty
- 39:15Speaker 3: twenty four.
- 39:17Speaker 1: It's since, you know, with this injury and with all
- 39:21Speaker 1: the house stuff and everything, my mind has just kind
- 39:23Speaker 1: of been a little lost, and I haven't been able
- 39:27Speaker 1: to like extend myself to others, and I just really
- 39:30Speaker 1: want to help others more and more. And I really
- 39:34Speaker 1: was hoping to do that in this new year, but
- 39:37Speaker 1: with everything going on, it just kind of set me
- 39:39Speaker 1: a little bit back. And that's always what I want
- 39:41Speaker 1: to aim for, is like be a voice for people
- 39:43Speaker 1: that you know don't have one or maybe aren't able
- 39:47Speaker 1: to voice what they really care about. And I want
- 39:52Speaker 1: to do that. I know that I have such a
- 39:54Speaker 1: great platform on Instagram and beyond, and I think that
- 39:58Speaker 1: I can really make some changes. I just need to
- 40:00Speaker 1: figure out what those changes need to be or want
- 40:03Speaker 1: to be, or wherever we need it in this world
- 40:06Speaker 1: or this facet of life, like running is such an
- 40:09Speaker 1: incredible community, and I feel like once you spread one thing,
- 40:12Speaker 1: like it's just like wildfire. I'm really passionate about women's
- 40:16Speaker 1: rights and just trying to get more involved in empowering women,
- 40:21Speaker 1: not just like women's rights, but just like uplifting women
- 40:24Speaker 1: as much as I can. So if I can do
- 40:26Speaker 1: that even a small way, like that's something that I'm
- 40:29Speaker 1: really excited about in this new year, is just you know,
- 40:31Speaker 1: making sure other women know that you know, you don't
- 40:34Speaker 1: need to dim your light. We all can be as
- 40:37Speaker 1: shiny and sparkly as we can be and that's that's
- 40:40Speaker 1: what's going to make this world a better place.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Well, I know your sponsor at ASEX is definitely listening
- 40:45Speaker 3: to this, so let's definitely figure out how we can
- 40:48Speaker 3: empower some more women in twenty twenty four. You know
- 40:51Speaker 3: that that's where I'm at too, and it would be
- 40:53Speaker 3: so fun to do it together. Right now, I'm looking
- 40:57Speaker 3: at the beginning of twenty three, you have an opportunity
- 40:59Speaker 3: to offer yourself a piece of advice. Knowing what you
- 41:02Speaker 3: know now at the top of twenty twenty four, what
- 41:06Speaker 3: do you tell yourself.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Progress is inevitable?
- 41:13Speaker 3: Ooh, how would you say progress has been inevitable for you?
- 41:18Speaker 2: This year?
- 41:19Speaker 1: Whenever I feel stuck or I feel like things aren't moving,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I start to reflect and realize how far I've come,
- 41:28Speaker 1: So not just in this year, but over like, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 1: my entire lifetime. You have to look back and realize
- 41:35Speaker 1: like how far you've come and not just you know,
- 41:39Speaker 1: I try not to look at just performances, but as
- 41:41Speaker 1: a person and how much I've grown, you know, emotionally, spiritually,
- 41:45Speaker 1: all these things. And it's just like it's a really
- 41:47Speaker 1: beautiful thing to realize that we're if you're not growing anymore.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I feel like there's something wrong. You're not looking inward enough,
- 41:56Speaker 1: you're not experiencing enough, you're not putting yourself into challenging circumstances.
- 42:02Speaker 1: I think we always need to challenge ourselves in order
- 42:05Speaker 1: to grow. So as long as you're doing that, progress
- 42:08Speaker 1: is it's going to happen.
- 42:10Speaker 2: I love that, Emma.
- 42:12Speaker 3: For those that don't follow along with you just yet,
- 42:14Speaker 3: give us the details?
- 42:15Speaker 2: How do they keep up with you?
- 42:16Speaker 1: On social mostly just Instagram? Emma Janelle Bates is my handle,
- 42:21Speaker 1: so check me out there. There's a lot of race recaps.
- 42:25Speaker 1: But I'm also hoping to spread some information about, you know,
- 42:29Speaker 1: being injured and kind of going through that process. When I,
- 42:33Speaker 1: you know, am through this injury process, it's hard to,
- 42:35Speaker 1: like when you're in it, to like educate people enough
- 42:40Speaker 1: on like what to do when you don't know what
- 42:43Speaker 1: you're doing. So once I figure out like the best
- 42:46Speaker 1: possible route that people can take for something that I'm
- 42:49Speaker 1: going through, I'm going to share that.
- 42:52Speaker 2: She's going to share it.
- 42:53Speaker 3: I'm over at Emily Body and at Hurdle Podcast Another
- 42:56Speaker 3: Hurdle Conquered.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
