- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily about a Here with a fresh episode
- 0:05Speaker 1: of Hurdle Moment from Hurdle, a podcast that talks to
- 0:08Speaker 1: everyone from entrepreneurs to top CEOs and athletes about how
- 0:11Speaker 1: they've gotten through tough times hurdles of sorts by leaning
- 0:15Speaker 1: into wellness. Today, I'm talking to you guys about something
- 0:20Speaker 1: that I mentioned quite often on the podcast, and it's
- 0:23Speaker 1: this idea of what you see when you look in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the mirror.
- 0:27Speaker 2: First, a little commentary.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Fresh back off the plane from Hawaii, I've got a
- 0:32Speaker 1: nice tan that I am super thankful for, much more
- 0:36Speaker 1: relaxed than when I left, and.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Just really grateful. I got a lot of messages from.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Many of you while I was gone asking me for
- 0:46Speaker 1: my best tips for traveling solo, and I have recorded
- 0:50Speaker 1: a Hurdle Moment before on how to be better by yourself.
- 0:54Speaker 1: But in the wake of all these requests, I will
- 0:56Speaker 1: definitely put that solo trip inspo situation on the docket
- 1:01Speaker 1: for the weeks to come. But I digress. This week's
- 1:04Speaker 1: Turtle moment again talking about what we see when we
- 1:08Speaker 1: look in the mirror, and now weekly on the podcast.
- 1:11Speaker 1: As I get to the end, I typically ask my
- 1:14Speaker 1: guests to reflect a little bit, and I ask them,
- 1:17Speaker 1: despite what it is that they may see esthetically, who is.
- 1:20Speaker 2: It that they see looking back at them?
- 1:22Speaker 1: And I've had some really poignant, thoughtful answers in the past,
- 1:27Speaker 1: answers that I think a lot of the guests probably
- 1:30Speaker 1: even surprise themselves with.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And I love that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And that's because not always do we take the time
- 1:36Speaker 1: to really reflect about what's going on inside, right, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: the hustle and the bustle and things being crazy, and God,
- 1:43Speaker 1: this time of the year, with the holidays and running around,
- 1:47Speaker 1: it can be hard to take that beat to stop
- 1:51Speaker 1: to reflect. But today I'm going to answer that question myself.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm going to get honest with you guys about what
- 1:57Speaker 1: it is that I see when I look in the mirror. Again,
- 2:01Speaker 1: going back to this trip that I took to Hawaii,
- 2:03Speaker 1: I had a lot of time to reflect that I
- 2:05Speaker 1: wasn't taking necessarily before I left New York. You know,
- 2:10Speaker 1: twelve hours on a plane there, sitting on the beach
- 2:12Speaker 1: for days listening to the waves, taking another twelve hour
- 2:16Speaker 1: flight back, that's a lot of me time, a lot
- 2:19Speaker 1: of time to sit with who it is that I am.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And so I just wanted to open up to you
- 2:25Speaker 1: guys and kind of be honest with what I'm feeling
- 2:28Speaker 1: and where I'm at. Now here is my goal. My
- 2:31Speaker 1: goal is that I'm going to open up to you,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and then hopefully you'll open up with yourself, and then
- 2:38Speaker 1: maybe you'll feel comfortable opening up to me.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So what does that look like?
- 2:43Speaker 1: It looks like me talking to you about what it
- 2:45Speaker 1: is that I see when I look in the mirror.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Then maybe it's you doing this exercise on your own.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Maybe it's talking to yourself in the comfort of your
- 2:53Speaker 1: own apartment like I'm doing right now. Maybe it's writing
- 2:56Speaker 1: some thoughts down on the subway or on your commute.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And then maybe once you're honest with yourself, you'll feel
- 3:01Speaker 1: comfortable sharing a little bit of that with me, whether
- 3:04Speaker 1: it's on your Instagram story or over email or whatever
- 3:07Speaker 1: feels right. The goal of this exercise again is to
- 3:10Speaker 1: hopefully get us all honest with what's going on, not
- 3:14Speaker 1: because we expect that it's going to be all roses
- 3:18Speaker 1: and perfect and smiles, but because until we take the
- 3:22Speaker 1: opportunity to get honest with ourselves that we cannot make
- 3:25Speaker 1: positive progress, We cannot really grow you guys know the drill.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Tag me with your videos, with your comments, with your
- 3:31Speaker 1: thoughts at Hurdle podcast, at Emily Body, and of course
- 3:34Speaker 1: always over email. If you have a hurdle moment of
- 3:37Speaker 1: your own to share, you want to say, Hi, It's
- 3:39Speaker 1: Emily at Hurdle dot us. And with that, let's get
- 3:44Speaker 1: to hurdling. What do I see when I look in
- 3:51Speaker 1: the mirror. It's interesting. I actually went to a studio
- 3:56Speaker 1: of sorts that's relatively new in New York City. It's
- 3:59Speaker 1: called Frequency, And I'm sure, however I explain this right now,
- 4:03Speaker 1: will not be how the company explains what happens in there.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But basically, you walk into a room and you have
- 4:09Speaker 1: the opportunity to connect with individuals who you don't know
- 4:13Speaker 1: and talk to them in an open and honest way
- 4:16Speaker 1: that you definitely wouldn't do on the streets. So when
- 4:18Speaker 1: I went to Frequency, I stood in this sphere of
- 4:22Speaker 1: sorts and opened up to one of the co founders,
- 4:25Speaker 1: a man from Israel, and we didn't exercise and where
- 4:28Speaker 1: for one or two minutes, just based off of impressions.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I told him who he is, and then he told
- 4:35Speaker 1: me who I am, and then we switched so it
- 4:39Speaker 1: was phrases like I am a daughter, I am strong, willed,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I am compassionate, things like that, and it was so
- 4:48Speaker 1: interesting to actually see how it is that we describe
- 4:52Speaker 1: ourselves versus some of the nice or maybe outlandish things
- 4:56Speaker 1: that someone else might say.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Anyway, I'm rambling.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Basically, what I'm trying to say is that that exercise,
- 5:02Speaker 1: in particular, it really got me thinking about who it
- 5:05Speaker 1: is that I am.
- 5:07Speaker 2: What do I see when I look in the mirror?
- 5:11Speaker 2: So what is it?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to open my handy cell phone camera
- 5:17Speaker 1: and stare at myself as I do this. This is
- 5:19Speaker 1: not pre rehearsed, all right. When I look in the mirror,
- 5:26Speaker 1: I see a strong woman. I see someone who's been
- 5:32Speaker 1: through a lot, and a woman that over the past
- 5:36Speaker 1: year has grown more than she could have even anticipated.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I see someone that's motivated beyond belief, and that knows
- 5:45Speaker 1: that she wants a lot, and that has a lot
- 5:47Speaker 1: of big goals, but also recognizes that she needs to
- 5:50Speaker 1: take some time to articulate exactly what those are and
- 5:53Speaker 1: what she wants.
- 5:54Speaker 2: To do to get to them.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I see a body, of course, just my last name,
- 6:01Speaker 1: but my physical body. This body that I feel at
- 6:06Speaker 1: Sometimes I am so so proud of, and admittedly it,
- 6:10Speaker 1: sometimes I'm uncomfortable with. I look down and I see
- 6:15Speaker 1: a stomach that at times has been small and other
- 6:17Speaker 1: times big. I see some mornings a couple of abs,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and other mornings none at all. And on that note,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I guess I see a fighter. I see someone who
- 6:30Speaker 1: is willing to put in the work, who understands that
- 6:34Speaker 1: the tough stuff happens for a reason. I see someone
- 6:38Speaker 1: who's trying to do good and someone that's been hurt.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I see someone that's just trying to figure it out,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and a person who is compassionate and impulsive and goes
- 6:52Speaker 1: out of their way for people even though maybe they
- 6:54Speaker 1: didn't even ask me for it. I see someone who
- 6:59Speaker 1: takes risks. I see someone who wants so badly to
- 7:04Speaker 1: be loved and liked, but understands that she's not everybody's
- 7:09Speaker 1: person and that's okay. I see someone who definitely wants
- 7:14Speaker 1: to be a partner, but understands more than ever that
- 7:18Speaker 1: she doesn't need a partner to feel whole. I see
- 7:21Speaker 1: someone that understands that there's a lot of work to
- 7:25Speaker 1: be done. And I see someone who's willing.
- 7:28Speaker 2: To do it. I don't know. I feel like I
- 7:30Speaker 2: listed a lot of things.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I think mostly when I look in the mirror, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: just see someone that's determined, someone that is willing to
- 7:38Speaker 1: go after it. And I hope, at the very least
- 7:41Speaker 1: that me talking about these things, me being open about
- 7:44Speaker 1: these things, me being honest about the fact that I
- 7:47Speaker 1: too struggle with self confidence and articulating exactly what it
- 7:52Speaker 1: is that my goals are.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And that's okay.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I hope that by sharing this with you, it empowers
- 7:58Speaker 1: you to be open and honest with yourself. So, like
- 8:01Speaker 1: I said in the intro, what I want you to do.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Maybe it's now, maybe it's tonight, maybe it's over the weekend.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Take some time to reflect, to say out loud or
- 8:10Speaker 1: to write down what is it that you see looking
- 8:12Speaker 1: back at you when you look in the mirror. I
- 8:15Speaker 1: don't just want descriptors, although those can be good too.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I want you to look deep, to maybe identify what
- 8:22Speaker 1: it is that you want that you don't see, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: then start to put together a little bit of an
- 8:27Speaker 1: action plan of what you can do to make a shift.
- 8:31Speaker 2: It's okay if.
- 8:32Speaker 1: You don't like everything, but what's important is that you're
- 8:37Speaker 1: honest and open with yourself, because until you're open with yourself,
- 8:41Speaker 1: nothing changes. If nothing changes at Emila Body at Hurdle Podcast,
- 8:48Speaker 1: do me a favor this week. Share this episode with
- 8:51Speaker 1: a friend who you think can benefit from this little
- 8:54Speaker 1: exercise another Hurdle co Good catch you guys next time.
