- 0:11Condon welcome back Iowa sports Radio network with your until
- 0:15low just before 2O clock off the bench coming up at that time.

- 0:20Just an FYI, if you're looking for first quarter Miller and
- 0:24Condon or off the bench, we're all taking Memorial Day off all
- 0:27back on Tuesday. Jean Repay coming up in about 20
- 0:31minutes. We'll give four of you an
- 0:32opportunity to win some grub from the chicken coop that'll
- 0:36come up before we get out of here as well.
- 0:38Likely about those 10 minutes somewhere in that vicinity prior
- 0:41to 2:00. Let's talk Cox.
- 0:43Tom Kicker joins us every Friday.
- 0:45Well, most Fridays, Sometimes we have to move a little bit.
- 0:48But for the most part, Dom, good to talk to you again.
- 0:51How are you? Doing well, just just passing
- 0:55through Des Moines on my way down to Kansas City to watch
- 0:57some Nike basketball today. So welcome to the capital city,
- 1:02Tom Caker. Well, you've been putting out
- 1:04some miles on the car following these these kind of basketball
- 1:08events, huh? Yeah, a little bit.
- 1:11You know, it was over in Indiana last week and now down to Kansas
- 1:14City for Forbid and just got hit the different circuits.
- 1:20Unfortunately, they don't put them all in the same circuit.
- 1:23So you got all these shoe circuits that have players and
- 1:27so I need to see them. So I'm going to get to see all
- 1:30of them and then I can make my assessments.
- 1:33Well, I know if you're not back before, so you will be back on
- 1:36November 15th because Creighton and I were going to play
- 1:38downtown Des Moines. I think it's I love these games.
- 1:41Time I do I it's great that the that they're coming over to the
- 1:44capital city obviously is a big fan base here in central Iowa.
- 1:49I think it's going to sell out. I think it's going to be a good
- 1:51game. I really do.
- 1:53Oh, I think, no doubt it's going to sell out between the Iowa
- 1:57fans and how excited they're going to be about this
- 2:00basketball team after what they accomplished last year.
- 2:03And Creighton fans are going to show up, too.
- 2:06You know, they've got a really, really strong fan base.
- 2:09So yeah, I think it's going to be a fun, fun day when or fun
- 2:13evening wherever the game is played.
- 2:15I'm not sure what time it'll be played, but right after the day
- 2:19before is Purdue and Iowa. Awesome.
- 2:23That should be a layup. Well, we'll see you know,
- 2:25Speaking of of of big 10 foes bat football wise, Tom Fernelli,
- 2:31he's not a guy that I don't think just put stuff out there
- 2:33for clicks and I think he put some thought behind what he's
- 2:37it's that type of year time of year rather, I get it the best
- 2:40rivalries. It's what, call it, Mount
- 2:43Rushmore season for a lot of these shows to come up with
- 2:46their Mount Rushmore. Did you see the top ten?
- 2:48His Big 10 football rivalry rankings for Nellie's that came
- 2:52out earlier this week. Did you see it?
- 2:54I haven't. I have not seen it, no.
- 2:56Iowa is actually named and there's ten of them.
- 3:00It starts obviously the Michigan, Ohio State's a layup
- 3:02#2 is Minnesota, Wisconsin. Iowa actually comes in at #3
- 3:07number 7 and #9 when it comes to the biggest rivalries in Big 10
- 3:13#3 is Minnesota #7 is Wisconsin, and #9 is Nebraska.
- 3:18I think this just illuminates because Trent says this all the
- 3:20time. It depends where you grew up in
- 3:22the state, right, as to what you think the rivalry is.
- 3:25I think that's spot on. I do too, because I think if you
- 3:29live in the far western part of the state of Iowa, Nebraska is a
- 3:34clear #1 If you live in the northern portion in the central
- 3:39part of Iowa, I think Minnesota's number clear number
- 3:43one. And if you live in that NE
- 3:44corridor around Dubuque, Clinton, all that area,
- 3:48Waterloo, probably going to be Wisconsin.
- 3:52Yeah, no, I'm. You live over in my area, my
- 3:55neck of the woods, Illinois. Illinois right, didn't make the
- 3:58list. I wish it did.
- 4:00I love well, obviously the basketball Illinois Iowa
- 4:02basketball goes without saying. You're so damn good.
- 4:05You know, we I talked about this earlier in the show and it's
- 4:08been on top of these come up a couple of times going back over
- 4:10the last couple years. What the hell has happened to
- 4:13Wisconsin, Tom? They used to be year after year
- 4:16after year. This was going to be a tough out
- 4:19in football. They were going to do some
- 4:21damage in the Big 10. What has happened over there?
- 4:25Is is part of it just, you know, I think, well, I think the
- 4:30mistake they made was fickle coming in and trying to fit
- 4:35square pegs into round holes and trying to retool that often
- 4:39make. A.
- 4:40Quote UN quote, modern, you know, precautionary tale for all
- 4:44the people who've wanted parents to change the offense over years
- 4:49because, you know, they sustained it through Belema,
- 4:53Gary Anderson, Paul, Chris, you know, and here's the other
- 4:57thing. Gary Alvarez was around that
- 5:00program until Fickle got there and then it was he's gone.
- 5:04And maybe that, you know, the godfather kind of mentality that
- 5:09Barry had. It's just maybe that let it slip
- 5:12away. But I think the spin was just
- 5:16trying to go to this higher, you know, passing offense, throwing
- 5:21the ball over the place and it's just never took.
- 5:26And now they've had some injuries at quarterback and I'll
- 5:28acknowledge that completely, but it just has not taken.
- 5:32Now this. This is do or die for fickle.
- 5:35Has to be. Got to be.
- 5:37I think it seats as hot as there is in college football.
- 5:40Yeah, I think so too. And if they and they've got that
- 5:43huge game right, you know, right out of the chute basically
- 5:46against Notre Dame up at Lambeau.
- 5:49And if Notre Dame goes up there and beat some 30 to 10, Luke
- 5:53Fickle make it past Sunday night.
- 5:55I don't know. That's a great point.
- 5:57Now the rest of their schedule, I mean their Big 10 schedule
- 6:00time, they play Penn State, they don't have an Ohio State.
- 6:04They they don't have a Michigan. They do have, I mean, obviously
- 6:08I was on there, Michigan State, UCLA and Rutgers, Maryland
- 6:11police, Minnesota and that's obviously a rivalry game and
- 6:15it's a huge game in Purdue. I mean, if he doesn't have AI
- 6:19mean that smells like even if it's a bad team, you got to
- 6:22stumble your way to seven wins, don't you with that?
- 6:25I would think so and the rest of their non counts are not Alan
- 6:29Jean either. Just.
- 6:31Western Illinois. Eastern Michigan.
- 6:34Yeah, that's two FCSP right, loading up on the FCS.
- 6:41Yeah, but I guess you're you're biting off Notre Dame too.
- 6:44So that does give them credit, yeah.
- 6:48And I think Notre Dame's, I think Notre Dame's a legitimate
- 6:50threat to win at all. I really do.
- 6:52I think so too. I think so too.
- 6:53They may be one of my future bets, I think when when Bush
- 6:58comes to shove this year. I haven't done any yet, but I
- 7:00think that's going to be one of my futures.
- 7:02Is Notre Dame national title just there?
- 7:05They seem poised to do it. I know they lost.
- 7:09Jeremiah loves it. Was everything.
- 7:12Yeah. And yeah, on price.
- 7:13But I think CJ Carr is really good.
- 7:17I think we may be in late November.
- 7:20It's Notre Dame national title, CJ Carr, Heisman Trophy.
- 7:25Yeah, wouldn't be a bit surprised.
- 7:27I know the next time we have a holiday, a national holiday,
- 7:30this Memorial Day weekend, but then the next one, July 4th,
- 7:34that's the weekend that you come up with your fearless forecast.
- 7:38I do. I don't know how you're going to
- 7:40do it this year. Tom there.
- 7:41When I look at this Iowa roster, there's just so many questions
- 7:45on both sides of the ball, right?
- 7:48Yeah, so many questions and just 10 seniors and not many of them
- 7:54are starters or expected to be starters.
- 7:57So it is a lot that's up in the air with this team this year.
- 8:02It's just it's so unknown, you know, it's not.
- 8:08You know, I was talking to somebody about Iowa State, this
- 8:11this this week, and I said yeah, they've got so many of those.
- 8:13And I said, so does Iowa. You know, they just Iowa State's
- 8:18got a hold of coaching staff and everything and they haven't seen
- 8:21the product on the field. And you kind of, you know, I
- 8:24always come back to what I just kind of always just trust Phil
- 8:27Parker will get this defense right.
- 8:29But boy, oh boy, there's just It's Zach Lummer and Zach
- 8:34Lutburn. Phil Parker's challenge, Tom,
- 8:38Phil Park this is I think this is as big of a challenge as Phil
- 8:42Parker's had since when. To put that, to mold this
- 8:47defense into his style and to squeeze every single bit of
- 8:51talent out of this group, this has got to be as tough a
- 8:54challenge as he's had in a long time.
- 8:56I think so too, because it's not like, you know, some of those
- 9:00other themes I go back to the the one I compared to is that
- 9:03one year was after the Claiborne Daniels Bin's Ballard group kind
- 9:11of left Carl Klug and they're all those guys and they and they
- 9:16were left one year. And I think it was like 2013 and
- 9:20or 2014, one of those two years maybe.
- 9:22And it was with you know, and like Tom Nardo and Joe Gaglione
- 9:27and guys that just had been in the program forever but just
- 9:31never played. And it just it just felt like a
- 9:35gap there that they just, and that's, you know, you start
- 9:39turning the page and going to Drew OTT and some of these other
- 9:43younger players. These young guys are going to
- 9:45have to grow up really, really fast I think this year,
- 9:48especially on the defensive line.
- 9:50Yeah, no question. I saw Athlon had him I think #25
- 9:53in their top 25 will receive materialize Tom, if you if we do
- 9:57expand the 24 and I'm doing this as a fan, right?
- 10:00I root for both schools. I want nothing more at some
- 10:04point before I cash in my chips to see a playoff game in
- 10:08December at Kinnock and a playoff game in December at Jack
- 10:12Price. Have you?
- 10:13Have you? Have you allowed yourself to,
- 10:16you know, to, to, to, to maybe not dream, but you just kind of
- 10:19speculate as to what that would be like to have a College
- 10:22Football Playoff, say, under the lights at Kinnock Stadium and
- 10:26disorder. My God.
- 10:28Crazy to think about that. Or just somewhere, you know,
- 10:32Iowa at Notre Dame. Yeah, in a College Football
- 10:35Playoff game, you know, like Indiana played at Notre Dame.
- 10:38Yeah, two years ago, Two years ago on a Friday night.
- 10:42Well, you know, what even got me thinking about it more was like
- 10:45the TD was talking this week out, in, out in that plush
- 10:49resort where, you know, because they.
- 10:51Because. Because they have no money and
- 10:53they're trying to, you know, collect nickel cans or
- 10:57something. I don't know that pay for things
- 10:59I guess with this the Big 10, but you said something about
- 11:04like released something or something.
- 11:07I don't know exactly what was they said are the 12 years since
- 11:10the playoff? Iowa would have been in the
- 11:12playoffs 6 times. It's crazy.
- 11:15That's unbelievable. That's why you say I, I'm in.
- 11:19I don't have a problem with I. Don't either.
- 11:22I don't either. I'm who's.
- 11:23Against more football. Exactly.
- 11:25I'll never understand it. And the fact that we're in the
- 11:28we're in the second week of November and we got teams that
- 11:31look as though they're both going to be 8 and 4.
- 11:33They're going to be on the precipices playoff or maybe
- 11:36they're playing for seeding. Maybe one of them's get out, get
- 11:39a home game. Oh, I think it's going to be
- 11:41spectacular, Tom. I I really do.
- 11:43Great. Yeah.
- 11:44I just. I just don't understand all the
- 11:46putting. You know, I mad about the NCAA
- 11:48tournament expanding and and I'm like, what's it who's who's
- 11:53against more football and more basketball?
- 11:56You know it's. The tournament's still going to
- 11:58start at 11:15 on Thursday, right?
- 12:01The Tuesday and Wednesday are teams that are not going to be
- 12:03playing around. But it's content.
- 12:05You can bet on it. You can watch it.
- 12:07Whatever, it's whatever city's hosting, it is going to fill up
- 12:10the at least some of the hotel rooms.
- 12:12And I, I I just don't. Have to don't you have to think
- 12:15that Vegas is going to be one of those locations?
- 12:18I do too. It's just it's just such a
- 12:20natural place to to put that one of the you know, you can stay in
- 12:25Dayton and have half of it in Dayton and then put the other
- 12:27half in, put the other half in Vegas.
- 12:30It's a perfect place, Although I did like the Albuquerque thought
- 12:33too. I thought that was pretty I'd.
- 12:34Rather be Vegas of the two. Have you talked to any coaches
- 12:39who were wishing that the that the spring signing period like
- 12:45now that we're at the end of spring ball, like at Iowa State,
- 12:47there they were destined, they found a running back at Tulane.
- 12:50But if they if it would have reopened, do you do you think
- 12:54there's coaches that are now wishing that, you know, man,
- 12:57maybe we jumped the gun on this. Maybe we should have another
- 12:59signing period. Are you hearing any of that,
- 13:01Tom? Yeah, I think there's some of
- 13:04them that would like that, but also I also think there's some
- 13:07of them that are going. You know what, It's good that I
- 13:09don't have to babysit my players either.
- 13:11Yeah, that's true. They don't.
- 13:13There's some of that too, where it's like the headaches or the
- 13:18headaches bigger than the benefits and sometimes, yeah.
- 13:21But if you've had some bad injuries in the spring, boy,
- 13:25you're just You're stuck. You know you're going to be
- 13:29rattling down at the bottom of the of the dumpster looking.
- 13:33For players in the portal or advertising on campus, like a
- 13:37member, that's where they found Iowa State kicker Brett
- 13:40Culberson one year and he kicked all the what, didn't he?
- 13:45The Sidehawk game that was in Iowa 1513.
- 13:47I think he was responsible for all of them.
- 13:49Shaggy stepping, stepping. Culbertson.
- 13:54And he went to, I want to say he went to hear school locally here
- 13:57at Lincoln. And somehow, I don't know how
- 14:00they found it, but they were grateful that they did.
- 14:02So when you're travelling around watching all this hoops, what
- 14:05have you found? Anything that would lead you to
- 14:07believe that there's a pretty good chance this this player is
- 14:10going to be a Hawkeye or he's going to get an opportunity at
- 14:13least be a Hawkeye. What have you heard, Tom?
- 14:15Yeah, that's a great question. The thing that I've come to the
- 14:18conclusion to, and I'll probably come fully to the conclusion,
- 14:23but the thing I'm leaning towards is they're involved with
- 14:27about 5 really high end point guards that are top 50 players
- 14:31and I think they're going to get one of them.
- 14:33I just don't know which one it's going to be.
- 14:36But the tell for me is always your actions always speak louder
- 14:42than your words. And last weekend, Ben McComb
- 14:45spent the whole weekend in Memphis at the Nike event where
- 14:50Jackson Davis and this TJ Jameson and also Cape Dart
- 14:57dirty. And so I think those are their
- 15:01three top wish list guys. That's my guess is just because
- 15:05he spent that entire time, he, it wasn't like he was in Memphis
- 15:10for 24 hours and then went up to South Bend and watch the Adidas
- 15:15event or there were two other point guards.
- 15:17So I think that's the tell is that their priorities are on
- 15:22those three guys. Yeah.
- 15:24Certainly, certainly seems like it.
- 15:26Hey, away from away from college, but she went to the
- 15:29Iowa, obviously. What do you think Indiana's
- 15:31doing with Caitlin Clark? Do you think it this time next
- 15:34year that Caitlin is a a member of the fever or is she gone
- 15:39elsewhere due to her being a free agent and her ability to
- 15:42sign elsewhere? Are they?
- 15:43Are they blowing their opportunity with her?
- 15:47Maybe I haven't paid as close of attention to it.
- 15:49I just saw the thing yesterday about her sitting out suddenly
- 15:54kind of just was on the intro report.
- 15:58That's kind of odd and she's kind of it's something weird
- 16:02because last year she was hurt basically the whole year.
- 16:06This year bad back is a training staff.
- 16:12I don't know what what's going on there.
- 16:14If they've tried to put too much weight on her, get her stronger,
- 16:18I don't know. It's very weird though, isn't
- 16:19it, that she just hasn't been healthy for the last two years
- 16:22now? Yeah, we shall see.
- 16:25Last thing for you, Jack Campbell got paid What what a
- 16:27player, obviously what a player in Iowa loved the fact that he
- 16:31was running down on special teams when he was a hawk on the
- 16:34punt coverage team and and has obviously he was All Pro last
- 16:39year, not Pro Bowl All Pro linebacker Jack Campbell.
- 16:43Good for him, right? Yeah, good.
- 16:45Good for him, although not good for my Chicago Bears because
- 16:48they're going to face it twice a year.
- 16:50But but Jack's one of the all time good people.
- 16:55We call them Captain Jack for a reason.
- 16:58You know, he was just one of the most humble leaders and just
- 17:02just such a good guy and so many good stories I've heard just off
- 17:08the field about Jack and the difference makes people's lives
- 17:11like cares for others. So happy for Jack and happy for
- 17:15his family. Absolutely like to hear those
- 17:17good guys and when it pays off as it obviously has for them.
- 17:20Tom, drive safe. Thanks for doing this.
- 17:22Enjoy your trip through Des Moines down to KC and we will
- 17:25talk to you next Friday. Thank you Tom Caker, enjoy
- 17:28Memorial Day weekend. Thanks man.
- 17:30Thanks, Kevin. Yep.

- 17:50believe it's Eugene that's going to be covering Iowa State in Las
- 17:54Vegas again this year. So we'll do that.
- 17:56Iowa State topics coming up. He's been on the coach's caravan
- 17:59at least once. I think he might have made it to
- 18:01a couple of the stops, but we'll find out when Eugene joins me on
- 18:05the other side. We're going to give away, I'll
- 18:07give you rather an opportunity to win some grub from the

- 19:15I'm Millery Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 19:18coming up on 1:30 on a getaway Friday as we head into the
- 19:23Memorial Day weekend. No live programming here on
- 19:26Monday, the morning show, Miller and Condon, the afternoon show.
- 19:30We're all taking Memorial Day off, all back on Tuesday.
- 19:34Let's talk some cyclones. Eugene Repay covers them.
- 19:38He's been the meeting the coaches out on the road in the
- 19:41coaches caravan and he joins us. Eugene, Trent's off.
- 19:45Just me. Good to talk to you.
- 19:46How are you Eugene? Repay.
- 19:50You know we're not. Kick off we're welcome to
- 19:51weekend until we're fully chopping it up on kicks it out.
- 19:55Absolutely and away we go So a couple a couple of areas I want
- 19:59to speak with you and I want to start with your column, your
- 20:02article rather in yesterday's Des Moines Register a pursuant
- 20:06to the Cyhawk game. I saw the headline thought oh
- 20:08boy, this is awful. I don't want to see this series
- 20:11and. I know I don't speak for
- 20:13everybody in the state. There's a large group of both.
- 20:16I think there may be more Hawkeye fans that don't want to
- 20:18play the game than Cyclone fans, but that's unofficial.
- 20:21That's just me feeling that way. But I want it played every
- 20:25single year. I think it's the greatest
- 20:27sporting event in the state and it's not even close.
- 20:30When I saw that when I saw your piece and I read the headline
- 20:33thought, Oh my God, this is this is awful.
- 20:35But then the more when I read the article, it's more of a tap
- 20:39the brakes. Not saying we're not going to
- 20:41play it, but we just don't know where it's going to fit.
- 20:44Did I did I read that properly? Eugene as far as it's going to
- 20:47be Week 2 or Week 3, what they're going to do with Week 0
- 20:50sounds as though both schools want to continue the game.
- 20:54That's correct, yeah. And that's something that I
- 20:56really wanted to make sure I, I ironed down there with Jamie
- 21:00Pollard, just with talking with him throughout the tailgate
- 21:03tour. I just want to double check,
- 21:04like both sides are, are very much intent on keeping this
- 21:07going. There's desire on both sides,
- 21:10Jamie Pollard and Beth Gats over on the Hawkeye side.
- 21:13They definitely want to keep it going.
- 21:15It's just right now there's just some logistics that they need to
- 21:18wait on, right? It looks like the NCAA Division
- 21:22One cabinet is going to vote on whether or not Week 0 becomes a
- 21:25standard season opening week and then we'll have a 14 week
- 21:29regular season for every FBS team.
- 21:31And if that goes into effect, that will definitely change from
- 21:34scheduling logistics moving forward.
- 21:36I think if this is past and this is going to be decided on in
- 21:40June or at least the beginning of the conversation will start
- 21:42in June. If this is past, this will go
- 21:45into effect for 2027. And right now the the Cyhawk
- 21:49game is slated to keep going through 27.
- 21:52We have this year and next year after that.
- 21:54It's still up in the balance, but the hope is once they see is
- 21:59it going to be approved? If it isn't approved, they could
- 22:02probably move on as normal. But if it is approved, how will
- 22:05this impact scheduling going forward?
- 22:07It might not have necessarily be the Week 2 like we've seen it in
- 22:10all the years past, but they're they definitely want to keep it
- 22:13going, keep the tradition going, whether it's week zero, Week 3
- 22:16or whatever week it needs to be. Is there any chance it becomes
- 22:19the final week of the regular season?
- 22:21Is is that even on anybody's radar?
- 22:24I think it was played there in 2001.
- 22:27Memory serves, it was late in the year obviously due to 911.
- 22:32But is is there because I know that I mean Clemson and South
- 22:35Carolina play there and they're two different conferences.
- 22:38I think Kentucky and Louisville play late.
- 22:41So we have seen some teams from different conferences actually
- 22:44play on quote rivalry weekend. I know that Nebraska and Iowa
- 22:49were there are are there, but maybe with all the new changes
- 22:52in scheduling, maybe did they move up earlier If if Nebraska
- 22:56Iowa aren't Black Friday, would that be something that maybe
- 22:59could appear on the radar that the game that gets back at the
- 23:03end of the season or in all likelihood no chance of that
- 23:06happening? No, I think it's definitely a
- 23:08possibility, just the impression that I get from talking with
- 23:10Pollard and from his conversations or what he's
- 23:13saying about his conversations with Iowa.
- 23:15And Hawkeye said they want to do it whatever it takes.
- 23:19You know, obviously if it means they have to move certain games
- 23:21around to fit it in or whatever the the puzzle pieces may be,
- 23:25they're going to get it done. Just they just need to see if
- 23:29there is, if we do move to the week zero and both teams are
- 23:33all, every FBS school will now get 2 open days or two by weeks
- 23:36built into regular season. That just gives a lot more
- 23:39scheduling flexibility. So maybe one year it might be
- 23:42Week 2 or Week 3, and then the next year after that it could be
- 23:45a Week 1 or a Week 0 game. Whatever needs to happen in
- 23:49order for it to fit and keep this tradition going.
- 23:51It sounds like both sides are very intent on exploring just
- 23:55right now. It's just a matter of wait and
- 23:56see until the NCAA decides on how the college football
- 24:01scheduling will work from 2027 and beyond.
- 24:03You were amongst the gaggle of reporters that met Jamie Pollard
- 24:06earlier in the week when his remarks went viral regarding the
- 24:09SEC in the Big 10. If they want to go, just just
- 24:11go. Just move.
- 24:13Move on with it. I'm paraphrasing, but that was
- 24:15kind of the gist of it. And I get his frustration.
- 24:19I do. At the same time, I also
- 24:20understand that the big 10, the SEC, they're they're the bullies
- 24:24on the block, right? So when you heard him say that,
- 24:27did you think, oh boy, this is this is this is going to get
- 24:31some some attention to those remarks.
- 24:33Did you realize what he was saying at the time was going to
- 24:36go as nationwide as it did? For sure.
- 24:40And I and I think that they're definitely seems to be just a
- 24:43level of frustration right now in regards to not only power
- 24:47conferences, but also the SEC and the Big 10 kind of acting
- 24:50above and and beyond the the rest of the other conferences
- 24:54and just college sports as a whole.
- 24:56I mean, you look at what's going on at LSU right now with who
- 24:58will wait is bringing in multiple former NBA drafts just
- 25:03in general to the SEC and the Big 10 trying to big dog
- 25:06everybody with the in terms of money and TV deals and things
- 25:09like that. And I definitely thought that it
- 25:11was going to go viral. But I also think that there's a
- 25:13lot of people that feel that way.
- 25:14I think because Pollard being one of those or being the
- 25:18longest tenured athletic director right now in college
- 25:21sports, I think that that also will help amplify or magnify his
- 25:25statements. But I think there is definitely
- 25:26a lot of people you look online or you just look at the general
- 25:30sentence in college sports right now.
- 25:31I think that there is the has and have nots or there's sort of
- 25:35a power imbalance here. And there's definitely a lot of
- 25:37people are upset that, you know, certain rules or certain things
- 25:40are applying to to 1 conference and maybe not the other or that
- 25:44certain conferences feel that they're above the rest when, you
- 25:46know, they should really be all equal.
- 25:49So we'll we'll see. But yeah, right now, I
- 25:52definitely felt like when that was was happening in person, I
- 25:55thought, A, it was going to go viral or definitely gain
- 25:57traction, but B, he just said the sentiments of so many
- 26:01college sports fans and just people in college sports right
- 26:04now. No doubt Coach Rogers has a new
- 26:07running back in the running backroom, kid from Tulane.
- 26:11Do you think deep down there was a any, any part of, of, of Coach
- 26:16Rogers that would appreciate another signing period?
- 26:22Remember last year we had the signing period after spring
- 26:24football and now would you go through spring?
- 26:27You've got some injuries, it's maybe not the deepest position.
- 26:30Do you think he misses having another signing period?
- 26:33He says that he actually still likes the current format.
- 26:35That way you know you won't. That way, in turn, you know
- 26:38you're not going to lose players.
- 26:40You know exactly which players are going to have Yeah, moving
- 26:42forward. And they were still able to add
- 26:45a player. But I'm sure if there was a
- 26:47second signing period, you probably have a better pool of
- 26:50players to pick from rather than these late last second edition.
- 26:55But he seems to be very excited about Arnold Barnes.
- 26:58The power back. Has plenty of experience at
- 27:00Tulane, played in 33 games over the last three seasons.
- 27:05Just a short another short yardage back.
- 27:07Will definitely be in the rotation at in some way or
- 27:10another. And according to Rogers, there's
- 27:13going to be no more additions after this.
- 27:14He thinks that the roster is completely set for now.
- 27:16Good stuff. Well, let's go to the Caravan
- 27:18and Jimmy Rogers and TJ and Fennelly and they're all there.
- 27:24What did what did you learn anything from listening to the
- 27:26coaches? Obviously Pollard was probably
- 27:28the big news breaker from the from the week.
- 27:30Did you learn anything else? Anything else appear on your
- 27:33radar that maybe wasn't there, Eugene?
- 27:37Them approaching the running back need and quickly getting it
- 27:41done and getting Barnes. I also learned that him and TJ
- 27:45are probably the two most popular coaches among the the
- 27:49fans are all the people in attendance.
- 27:51The lines for autographs are definitely long for TJ and there
- 27:54were definitely times where it felt like it was even longer for
- 27:56Jimmy Rogers. There's a lot of people curious
- 27:59and and intrigued about it. I think one thing that was kind
- 28:01of funny was just talking with Jimmy Rogers.
- 28:04I was like, oh, you know how most of the interactions been
- 28:07and he told me they've been very positive.
- 28:09But one thing I don't like is when I hear fans have low
- 28:12expectations for the things like that.
- 28:14He's just very passionate and excited to get to work.
- 28:17It's not a big of anybody, but it maybe just adds a little more
- 28:21fuel to his competitive fire. I think with Bill family, The
- 28:24thing is, is that he doesn't have an immediate timetable
- 28:27right now for when the end of his career or retirement will
- 28:30be. He, him and Jimmy Pollard have
- 28:33been talking like he'll get to go out on his own terms.
- 28:35And it's sounds like he would like to be here for at least 2-3
- 28:39more years. Yeah, he doesn't.
- 28:42Yeah. He and I, I do wonder though if
- 28:44if a part of that is also maybe his true intentions are are kept
- 28:49close to the vest because if you're recruiting.
- 28:52It's. Probably going to be, yeah, it's
- 28:53going to be a tough sell to these recruits and prospects if
- 28:56you're not going to be here after next year or whatever the
- 28:58case may be. But right now, there's no
- 29:00immediate timetable that they're willing to share with us or or I
- 29:03like publicly yet. But I thought that was an
- 29:05interesting tidbit. And then TJ also Burger, just
- 29:08the alignment right now between him, Doctor David Cook, Jamie
- 29:12Pollard and himself, it just seems to be an all time high
- 29:15right now. He's very excited about his
- 29:17transfers and he also thinks that the piece that they have
- 29:20coming back along with his new assistants, he thinks that
- 29:23they'll be pretty solid again going into next year.
- 29:26He did lose a player though. 4 star Jackson kiss.
- 29:29Was he caught off guard by that? What was behind that?
- 29:32Any idea? Eugene.
- 29:34Yeah, it sounded like Jackson Kiss wanted.
- 29:38Yeah, Jackson Kiss was in a position where he wanted more
- 29:40playing time. My sense from just talking with
- 29:44TJ about it is there's no bad blood or anything like that was
- 29:48actually something that was kind of expected.
- 29:51They they just weren't sure what the pieces or how the pieces are
- 29:54really going to fit next month. They start, I believe everyone
- 29:58reports, June 13th and then they'll be getting their first
- 30:00summer workout on June 15th. And so as things have started to
- 30:06get closer to that and there's been a lot more open
- 30:08conversations between players and coaches and expectations,
- 30:11especially with your incoming freshmen, it sounded like that
- 30:14this was going to be a brewing thing.
- 30:16And I would say kind of help them out with the process.
- 30:20I don't think that there was any bad blood at all between both
- 30:23parties. So I think it's something that
- 30:24both teams will be able to benefit.
- 30:26I think it also speaks to how confident TJ Altelberger is
- 30:29about his incoming transfers and kind of what the pieces that
- 30:32they have already that Jackson kissed a four-star freshman
- 30:35might have been on the outs going into the summer.
- 30:38So we'll we'll see how it goes for kiss, how it goes for Iowa
- 30:42State's personnel on the front court and also just both
- 30:44parties. And you never know, maybe
- 30:46they'll cross paths again couple years from now with the way that
- 30:49the transfer portal is, yeah. And that's an excellent point
- 30:52players there. One of the beefs about it last
- 30:54year and you covered it in Las Vegas and will again this year
- 30:57for the Des Moines Register when we get into mid to late
- 31:01November. One of the critics says we got
- 31:04to have a bracket. I mean, we don't know what this,
- 31:06we don't know the the INS and outs of this tournament, so to
- 31:09speak. Well, now we do.
- 31:11And we know that Iowa State is going to open up against San
- 31:14Diego. I think it's San Diego State.
- 31:16Then they'll get it's assuming they win and they'll be favored
- 31:19to do so. They get the winner of
- 31:21Tennessee, Maryland. I love the fact that we've got a
- 31:25bracket. I think that this actually
- 31:27elevates this tournament in a lot of people's eyes.
- 31:30It was missing that last year. Your thoughts on the path for
- 31:33Iowa State in the Players Era, which begins for them on
- 31:36November the 24th. I like it.
- 31:39You start with San Diego State equality mid major, and then if
- 31:42you win, assuming you know whether it's Maryland or
- 31:45potentially a Sweet 16 rematch with Tennessee, that would be
- 31:48intriguing as well. I do like the bracket format.
- 31:51I know that there were some people who are bummed when you
- 31:53see the players era 8 versus the players era 16.
- 31:57There was probably some teams from the other bracket you would
- 31:59love to see in your 16 team field.
- 32:01But overall, I think just the magnitude of the event that
- 32:04won't change. Like I still think it'll be a
- 32:05highly anticipated event whether you're looking at the 18 bracket
- 32:08or the 16 team bracket. The bracket just makes it so
- 32:11much easier for everyone to follow.
- 32:12There's no surprises, no math, calculation, point
- 32:15differentials, confusing tiebreakers, things like that.
- 32:18Everyone knows what they got. They know what what their
- 32:20potential path may look like and just overall, as you get deeper
- 32:24into the tournament too, there's just so many marquee teams, so
- 32:27many high profile teams from various conferences.
- 32:30I think it's still going to remain.
- 32:31It's a great event and I'm even more excited for it now, now
- 32:34that we have the bracket and we know exactly what to expect.
- 32:37So is there, I don't know, this aspect of it or even if it
- 32:40exists at all. Does the Players Era 8 champion
- 32:44then ultimately meet the Players Era 16 champion or should I just
- 32:48look at those as two separate events?
- 32:50Yeah, it'll be two separate events that yeah, that's what
- 32:53we'll be able to kind of be like the the PK Invitational where
- 32:56they had the the two separate brackets when they held that a
- 32:59few years back. But yeah, the players there 8 is
- 33:02separate from the players there at 16.
- 33:04I think they'll be on two different weeks.
- 33:05I would have loved though. I would have loved for that,
- 33:07that they have. That game happened, the champion
- 33:09versus champion. Yeah, that'd be awesome.
- 33:11Well, I think it's, I think it's obviously well received.
- 33:15Hopefully the television money continues to be there because my
- 33:18gosh, what a great, what a great start.
- 33:21I know it's a couple of weeks into the season, but this is
- 33:23high level basketball in a tournament form very early on
- 33:26the basketball calendar. Eugene Repay.
- 33:30Des Moines Register What are you doing this weekend, Eugene?
- 33:32You got plans? Hoping to hopefully eat a
- 33:35burger, a hot dog or two and and we'll see where we go from
- 33:38there. Good stuff.
- 33:39Your weekends are about to be busier here in the weeks ahead,
- 33:41so get well, no doubt. Thanks buddy.
- 33:44Appreciate it. Eugene.
- 33:45We'll talk to you next week. Thank you, Sir.
- 33:47Thank you guys so much, enjoy a long weekend.
- 33:49Yep. You do the same Eugene Rupee as
- 33:51we check in on Iowa State, Florida, Notre Dame, Houston,
- 33:55Rutgers, Kansas, UNLV, West Virginia, Auburn.
- 33:58That's the players era 8 and then the 16.
- 34:03So I don't know what's coming out of that players era 8.
- 34:07Florida, obviously they're on the other side of Kansas, but
- 34:10for Iowa State's sake, then they would take on assuming they they
- 34:14turn the tables on say it's Tennessee.
- 34:16Although Trent said yesterday that Maryland spent a lot of
- 34:19money in the portal. So maybe they take a step
- 34:20forward. Saint John's in Oregon,
- 34:22Louisville and Texas Tech in the bottom of that.
- 34:26At some point, if Iowa State wins their first two games, they
- 34:29would play the winner that comes out of the bottom.
- 34:33Let's give it to Texas Tech at this point.
- 34:35Although Saint John's always, I think Saint John's gonna be a
- 34:37player again. And then on the other side,
- 34:40Gonzaga, K State, Michigan, Creighton, TCU, Miami, Alabama,
- 34:50not bad, not bad. Michigan, the defending champs,
- 34:53national champs on that side of the bracks.
- 34:54Got everybody. Fascinating tournament to see
- 34:57how it plays out. All right, right now, if you
- 35:00have not played in the last 30 days and you would like to do
- 35:04so, the phone lines are open. We're going to take the 1st 4
- 35:08callers at 515-284-5966, 515-284-5966.
- 35:15I'm going to give you 4 games and a tiebreaker.
- 35:18If you get the most right, you'll win a $50.00 gift
- 35:21certificate to use as you please at one of the three chicken
- 35:25coops. The runner up is going to get 20
- 35:27wings, so two of the four of you are going to go walk away with
- 35:31the prize. There are three chicken coop
- 35:32locations in Ankeny just southwest of the DMAC campus on
- 35:37Oral Labor Rd. in West Des Moines.
- 35:39They're at 60th and Ashworth and in Urbandale. 12725 Meredith in
- 35:46Urbandale. We'll do the chicken coop

- 36:50going to play tonight due to a back injury.
- 36:53If she does and there's a couple of you tied, well, we'll reach
- 36:55out to you and we'll come up with another tiebreaker at some
- 36:58point next week. But as long as she plays, that's
- 37:00the tiebreaker we are going to use if needed.

- 38:36We'll go to Vegas. The Spurs are a point and a half
- 38:39favorite tonight over OKC. Go with the Spurs.
- 38:44Does Murakami hit a home run Friday, Saturday or Sunday?
- 38:49Yes. Caitlin Clark total points,
- 38:52rebounds and assists. That's the tiebreaker.
- 38:56We'll go with 40, Kenny. Thanks, Doug.
- 38:58Enjoy the weekend. Yep.

- 40:15I'm going to miss it too. I appreciate you listening over

- 40:18Take care. You bet.
- 40:20All right, that's going to do it for the chicken coop contest for

- 40:39I think I've I've done all of the announcements a couple of
- 40:43times. So should everybody should be
- 40:44aware of that should be aware that coming up next is off the
- 40:48bench. Lucas and Sean will take you
- 40:50until 5:00. So a good weekend of sports,
- 40:53some really good NBA, this Spurs OK C series and I think it's I
- 40:57hope it'll go seven games. I give the other series no
- 41:00chance to even like Cleveland had their chance, right?
- 41:04They had them on the ropes in game one.
- 41:05They're up 22 points late or midway through the fourth
- 41:08quarter and they gagged that and lose in overtime.
- 41:11And not only that, I mean, for some people then the Knicks,
- 41:15they covered in the game. They were down 22 and they
- 41:18covered it and it was six, 6 1/2 seven as they just just ran away
- 41:22as Cleveland just totally ran out of gas.
- 41:24But the Western Conference, I think it's going to be a heck of
- 41:27a series. I hope for seven games.
- 41:29I just, I just can't get enough of this Wimbledon.
- 41:31What can't he do? And we're going to see these two
- 41:33teams, I think for the foreseeable future, OK C and San
- 41:37Antonio, they seem to be built. They're both young teams,
- 41:40relatively young. San Antonio is even younger.
- 41:42Meanwhile, on ice, the two favourites that we thought were
- 41:44just going to be a, you know, somewhat of a cake walk, not the
- 41:47walk over, but they would have, you know, 5 or 6 at the most
- 41:51that Colorado's going to come out of the West and Carolina's
- 41:54going to come out of the East. And it's going to be these two
- 41:57heavy heads playing for the best trophy in all the sports.
- 42:01Not so sure. Montreal is good and so is BJK.
- 42:05Thank you for Connor Ferguson for sitting in Trent.
- 42:07And I will be back on Monday. Have a wonderful, safe holiday
- 42:12weekend on Memorial Day. We'll talk to you on Tuesday.
- 42:16Thanks for being with me, Miller and Condon talking sports with
- 42:19you as we do every Monday through Friday from noon until 2
- 42:23on the Iowa Sports Radio now.
