- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is the 29th of July.
- 0:18Boy, we're almost into the last month of winter.
- 0:21That is good news. It is Monday, it's the start of
- 0:24a new week and you have tapped on play.
- 0:27Hello, hello, hello. Good to have your company as
- 0:31this week we are going to finish reading through the book of
- 0:36John. Yes, the end of any of the
- 0:38Gospels is a fairly intense series of accounts of Jesus,
- 0:43death and resurrection, and John is no different.
- 0:46So we are going to journey through that together this week,
- 0:50friends, and then we'll come at the other side and celebrate
- 0:52with the sire when we get to Friday.
- 0:55But Friday, oh, it seems like a long way away.
- 0:58We are going to start. We are just moving out of that
- 1:01upper room that we've spent the last couple of weeks down into
- 1:05that final narrative as Jesus walks through these last couple
- 1:09of days of his earthly life before his death and
- 1:13resurrection. Having said all that, let us
- 1:16read this. Let us read this account that
- 1:19shows just how loved you are and I am by our Saviour, that He
- 1:24would be willing to go through all of this for us and for our
- 1:29behalf. You ready?
- 1:31Me too. Let us read together John
- 1:34chapter 18. After saying these things, Jesus
- 1:48crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a
- 1:51Grove of olive trees. Judas the betrayer knew this
- 1:55place because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.
- 1:59The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a
- 2:02contingent of Roman soldiers and temple guards to accompany him.
- 2:06Now, with blazing torches, lanterns and weapons, they
- 2:10arrived at the olive Grove. Jesus fully realised all that
- 2:14was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them.
- 2:18Who are you looking for? He asked Jesus the Nazarene.
- 2:23They replied, I am He, Jesus said.
- 2:28Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
- 2:31As Jesus said I am he. They all drew back and fell to
- 2:36the ground once more. He kept asking them, who were
- 2:39you looking for? And again they replied, Jesus
- 2:43the Nazarene. I told you that I am he, Jesus
- 2:48said, and since I'm the one you want, let these others go.
- 2:53He did this to fulfil his own statement.
- 2:56I did not lose a single one of those you have given me.
- 3:00Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of
- 3:04Malchus, the high priest's slave.
- 3:06But Jesus said to Peter, put your sword back into its sheath.
- 3:10Shall I not drink the cup of suffering the Father has given
- 3:13me? So the soldiers, their
- 3:16commanding officer and the temple guards arrested Jesus and
- 3:20tied him up. First they took him to Annas,
- 3:24since he was the father in law of Caiaphas the high priest.
- 3:27At that time, Caiaphas was the one who had told the other
- 3:31Jewish leaders, it's better that one man should die for the
- 3:34people. Simon Peter followed Jesus, as
- 3:39did another of the disciples. That other disciple was
- 3:42acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the
- 3:45high priest's courtyard with Jesus.
- 3:48Peter had to stay outside the gate.
- 3:51Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman
- 3:55watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.
- 3:58The woman asked Peter, you're not one of that man's disciples,
- 4:02are you? No, he said.
- 4:04I'm not because it was cold. The household servants and the
- 4:08guards made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming
- 4:12themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself inside.
- 4:17The high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and
- 4:21what he had been teaching them. Jesus replied.
- 4:25Everyone knows what I teach. I've preached regularly in the
- 4:28synagogues and the temple where the people gather.
- 4:32I have not spoken in secret. Why are you asking me this
- 4:35question? Ask those who heard me.
- 4:37They know what I said. Then one of the temple guards
- 4:40standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face.
- 4:44Is that the way to answer the high priest?
- 4:46He demanded. Jesus replied.
- 4:49If I said anything wrong, you must prove it.
- 4:53But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?
- 4:57Then Anas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas the high priest.
- 5:02Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire, warming
- 5:05himself, they asked him again. You're not one of his disciples,
- 5:10are you? He denied it, saying No, I'm
- 5:13not. Then one of the household slaves
- 5:16of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had
- 5:20cut off, asked, Didn't I see you out there in the olive Grove
- 5:23with Jesus? Again Peter denied it, and
- 5:27immediately a rooster crowed. Jesus trial before Caiaphas
- 5:34ended in the early hours of the morning.
- 5:37Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman
- 5:39governor. His accusers didn't go inside
- 5:42because it would defile them and they wouldn't be allowed to
- 5:45celebrate the Passover. So Pilot, the governor went out
- 5:49to them and asked, what is your charge against this man?
- 5:55We wouldn't have handed him over to you if you weren't a
- 5:57criminal, they retorted. Then take him away and judge him
- 6:02by your own law. Pilate told them.
- 6:05Only the Romans are permitted to execute someone.
- 6:08The Jewish leaders replied. This fulfilled Jesus prediction
- 6:12about the way he would die. Then Pilate went back into his
- 6:16headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him.
- 6:20Are you the King of the Jews? He asked him.
- 6:24Jesus replied. Is that your own question or did
- 6:28others tell you about me? Am IA Jew, Pilate retorted.
- 6:34Your own people and their leading priests brought you to
- 6:38me for trial. Why?
- 6:41What have you done? Jesus answered.
- 6:45My Kingdom is not an earthly Kingdom.
- 6:48If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being
- 6:51handed over to the Jewish leaders.
- 6:54But my Kingdom is not of this world, Pilate said.
- 6:58So you are a king, Jesus responded.
- 7:03You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came
- 7:08into the world to testify to the truth.
- 7:11All who love the truth recognise that what I say is true.
- 7:16What is truth? Pilate asked.
- 7:21Then he went out again to the people and told them he is not
- 7:24guilty of any crime. But you have a custom of asking
- 7:28me to release 1 prisoner each year at Passover.
- 7:33Would you like me to release this king of the Jews?
- 7:36They shouted back. No, not this man.
- 7:39We want Barabbas. Barabbas was a revolutionary
- 7:56Jesus. You had one mission and one
- 7:58mission only in your life, and that was to save us so that we
- 8:03would know that the God of the universe is for us and loves us
- 8:07and reaches out to draw us back to Him.
- 8:13Thank you Jesus, for your mission.
- 8:15Thank you for your obedience to your Heavenly Father.
- 8:19Thank you for your love for us and everything that you were
- 8:23willing to put yourself through or for our benefits at your
- 8:29tremendous cost. We are humbled by your sacrifice
- 8:35and just so delighted that you would choose us and that we
- 8:41would be the motivation for you to go through this so that we
- 8:47could be reconciled to the Father through you and your
- 8:50perfect sacrifice. So we honour you, Jesus, we lift
- 8:53you up, we praise you, and we pray all of these things in your
- 8:58name, Amen.
