- 4:06life of Nick Carter. Once again we keep our weekly appointment, which takes
- 4:12us to the sedate old Victorian mansion on the corner of Fifth and Fourth.
- 4:15It is late afternoon, the long shadows fall across the quiet streets. A
- 4:19solitary flower peddler ambled slowly down the block. His horse follows sedately, pulling
- 4:26a dilapidated truck full of poppet, geraniums and petunias. The peddler is exercising
- 4:30a fine Italian tenor voice. Everyboy, once flow, that's a flower.
- 4:39I got a petunia? I got a geranium, I got a rest world,
- 4:48gotta falling. Wait a minute, a minute, hey, I gotta
- 4:54say for the nice young ladies home, got a petunia, got the bigonia.
- 5:03It's okay, got the ball. This is a coming gay head.
- 5:08A good afternoon with Patsy. Oh it's a fight, Tony. Have you
- 5:14got any climbing roses? We lost ours? You know, winter calls.
- 5:17No, that's too bad. It's a shame too. You want to pull
- 5:24the scarlet or that new dawn or a blazer maybe and got today. But
- 5:29I'm gonna get him for you. We'll take one of the miss Patsy,
- 5:32and are your boss? He's a home maybe you mean mister. Yes,
- 5:38he's upstairs in the laboratory. But are you askingim? I please, can't
- 5:41you see Tony? Well, it's after office at I gotta see him,
- 5:46Miss Patsy? Please? I gotta my sister Maria. She's she's afraid,
- 5:53she's a god afraid to do death? What's you afraid of? To a
- 5:56rocking What a rocking chair? That was about? Belongs to an old lady.
- 6:00And this old lady is a there a long time ago, but summer
- 6:04time, and she has to come back. She sits in the rocking chair,
- 6:09in the rock and the rock and a rock, And every time she's
- 6:12a rock, somebody gets a dead. H That sounds promising. Suppose you
- 6:17tell me all about it, Tony, and I'll see if I can't persuade
- 6:19mister Carter to pay your sister visit and investigate that rocking chair. Oh but
- 6:39Nick, you could do with some fresh air. We could run a speed
- 6:42boat and take a run up of sounds. The island where Tony's sister lives
- 6:45isn't very far beyond Hellgate. How does Tony's sister happen to be living on
- 6:48an island on the other side of Hellgate? It's the Old Tumble of State
- 6:51Shipwreck Island. Tony sister Maria is the housekeeper for Eric Crumble, the famous
- 6:57painter, who lives there. Now I see. Old house has been in
- 7:00the Tremble family for three generations. Was built by Obadiah Tremble, an old
- 7:04sea captain who was suspected of being a free booter at the time of the
- 7:08Civil War. The old boy had four wives in succession. I hope,
- 7:13Oh, but of course, Oh where does the rocking chair come in?
- 7:15Oh? That belonged to the last of old Obadiah's wives. He brought her
- 7:19home as sort of an afterthought when all the children of his otherwives had grown
- 7:23up. They hated her. The little would skin the color of dark ivory,
- 7:27and her face was sort of like a monkey. Some say she was
- 7:30a creole, and others claimed she was Portuguese. At any rate, she
- 7:32talked with an accent and claimed to have the powers of a voodoo witch doctor.
- 7:36Probably hated her because they were afraid of her, probably as soon it
- 7:41was Obadiah safely in his grave and the children turned on her. Eric's father,
- 7:45who was the eldest, had declared insane, nice people. She was
- 7:48locked up in an added room and fed three times a day, but no
- 7:51one ever spoke to her, and she never came out of that room.
- 7:55No one would have known she was there if it hadn't been for that rocking
- 7:58chair. You could hear it creaking all hours of the day and night.
- 8:01After nearly thirty years, she was suddenly taken very ill. When she found
- 8:05she was going to die, she asked him to send for Eric's father.
- 8:09Was a nasty night with the wind howling about you, Andrea come in stupid,
- 8:20so you have come me. It's doctors thought you. I am about
- 8:24to die, and you think at last you will be rid of me.
- 8:30Listen, you poor you will never be rid of me. I will return
- 8:35sometimes and shitting that rocking chair where I have spent so many lonely years.
- 8:41She will not see me, but I will be there. Sometimes the chair
- 8:48will rock, and that will mean there is to be a death in this
- 8:52family. There is about to be a death night, I think, yes,
- 8:58see the jails. Oh maybe it stops so sweet the time you smite
- 9:07it, but it would walk for you, all you and I. The
- 9:16chair rock fast and faster. She died. Eric's father saw it, probably
- 9:22a form of self and jutypnosis brought about by the old girl's suggestions. Possibly
- 9:28the rocking chair heard from again. Yes, every now and then. But
- 9:31the funny part is that almost every time, according to Tony's sister, someone
- 9:35in the family died within the year. The family that's size is just by
- 9:39the law of averages, someone is a to die within the ear, whether
- 9:43the rocking chair rocked or not. Oh, I hadn't thought of it that
- 9:46way, Nick. Anybody living in the old house now except Eric and Tony's
- 9:52sister. No, they came back a little over a year ago. Eric
- 9:56was too broke to live anywhere else. Has Tony's sister ever heard the famous
- 10:01rocking chair? Not until lately. Seems that everything was going along as well
- 10:05as could be expected until Captain Ralph Trumble, Eric Trumble's cousin, and his
- 10:09wife moved in. I gather the captain's wife is very attractive, and the
- 10:15captain isn't always home, and Eric is a notorious ladies man. That's about
- 10:20the size of it. And to top off the whole thing, the rocking
- 10:22chair seems to have started to rock again. Well, what do you expect
- 10:26me to do? I just want you to find out what makes that rocking
- 10:30chair rocks so Tony's sister can stop being frightened. All right, I'll look
- 10:35into it if you can get them to rent us that new speedboat. I
- 10:39remember, I don't want any hard boiled eggs in my lunch. Now you'd
- 10:56like to kick Do you have a see that you haven't made? Going to
- 11:01be a storm before night? Oh? Nick, there isn't a card in
- 11:03the sky. Tony said, he get where to insist him. We were
- 11:07coming to be waiting for her on the docks. That must be the island
- 11:13up ahead, Nick, No doubt we'll pass it. Well, you look
- 11:16at that house, got everything? You below? Way? Do us walk?
- 11:22I'll bet there's even an iron deer on the front lawn. And I
- 11:26could certainly use a coat of paint. Look there on the end of the
- 11:28dock. That must be Tony's sister. She's not exactly what you'd call a
- 11:33silk fishy. Oh hand me that line, will you? Hello? Are
- 11:41your Tony's sister? See, I'm for the money. You want to miss
- 11:46the mixed and the missus? No, no, I'm Catty Bowen, mister
- 11:50Carter's secretary. Give me your hand, I help you, thank you?
- 11:54Oh, be careful, please, so many of these boards the souls.
- 11:58Okay, we'll be careful. Well, Maria, how about it? You
- 12:01think I can get a look at this notorious rocking chair that's causing all the
- 12:05troubles. See, that's easy. The captain is away on a cruise.
- 12:09He won't be back until next week. Mister Eric and the captain's wife in
- 12:13the studio. He's a painting her picture, painting a picture, or he's
- 12:18always a painting. How when the captain is away. The studios in the
- 12:20front on the second floor, the room over the rock, and the chase
- 12:24on the third floor over the kitchen. Will take the back stage. No
- 12:28one will see us. This is the room, and mister Glass see it
- 12:45has not been named since mister Eric's father was found the hanging to the raptors
- 12:48and they threw the key into the wind. Is there any way we can
- 12:52crawl in through a window? The only window is two floors above the roof
- 12:56of the kitchen. There's a three outside, but the branches are two small
- 13:00to hold anybody. Then I'll have to pick the lock. That doesn't be
- 13:03much, but yeah, with my picklock. The old house is so quiet
- 13:09you almost breathe. Wish it was a dark up here. Nick, Did
- 13:16you hear that? This is the chair again? The rocks. Someone want
- 13:22to die? Someone want to die a minute now? The lock isn't as
- 13:28simple as it looks there. That didn't pick now, No one needs to
- 13:35bring The room is empty. Look over there right beside the window. The
- 13:41rock is still rocking, and the dust all over everything to be prince of
- 13:46some sort, But there aren't neck. It's not a mark on the floor
- 13:48anywhere, just spirits to living for the prince. The window, a little
- 13:52pane at the lower left hand corner is missing, but the window is a
- 13:56lot to fight. Nobody could crawl through an opening, so a little that
- 14:00nick the cushion. The cushion on this chair is still warm, he said.
- 14:07The company's come home. He's looking for his wife. You better run
- 14:11down the reel see if you can't stall him. And well, a locked
- 14:30room and a rocking chair that rocks all by itself with nobody around to set
- 14:33it rocking, and an angry captain trying to find his missing wife. How
- 14:37can they put all these things together and get the right answer. We'll see
- 14:41in just a moment. The things you learned firsthand are the things you really
- 14:46know best. That's why women who have used the new LINEX self polishing wax
- 14:52is so enthusiastic about it. For they found how different, how perfect the
- 14:56quick drying wax can be. They've learned what's sparkling, new beauty, the
- 15:00new protection, new skid resistance it gives their floors and linoleum develop by leading
- 15:05research chemists to give you the best. The formula of Linax self polishing wax
- 15:09is completely new. It has the highest possible content of genuine Carnava wax,
- 15:15lending handsome appearance, lasting protection, real anti skid finish to every household floor
- 15:20surface. The Underwriter's laboratories have actually proved that linoleum, hardwood and rubber tile
- 15:26are less slippery after application of Linax self polishing wax. The minute you walk
- 15:31where it's been applied, you can tell the difference. What's more, Linax
- 15:35self polishing wax dries quickly to a satne luster without tiresome rubbing, and it
- 15:41takes only a jiffy to wipe on. So follow the example of wise American
- 15:46homemakers use genuine Linax self polishing wax, and remember, when you want a
- 15:50modern finish of the brush on type. To give even longer lasting protection,
- 15:54get Linax Clear Gloss, which dries overnight to a beautiful gloss finish that lasts
- 16:00amazingly. Whichever you prefer Linax self polishing wax or Linax Clear Gloss, you
- 16:07get the finest product of its kind. When you ask for it by name
- 16:10Linux you'll find all three great Linax Home brighteners and Ken Tone, the miracle
- 16:15wall finish that dries in one hour at hardware, paint, and department stores
- 16:21everywhere. And now back to our story. Investigating an old house in which
- 16:37an ancient rocking chair started rocking without any cause or reason, Nick runs into
- 16:41a complicated set of circumstances. Eric Trumbull is painting a portrait of the captain's
- 16:45beautiful young wife, much against the captain's wishes, and Maria, Eric's Italian
- 16:51housekeeper, is scared of both the rocking chair and the quick tempered captain.
- 16:56As we pick up our story, the captain is storming through the house looking
- 16:59for his wife, Maria. Maria, Oh, hey are fair and thunder
- 17:04is my wife is not in her room? A coup the crumb. You're
- 17:07not blame? Well, she's not, I remember now, she's gone to
- 17:11the mainland to the market. No, no, she hasn't. Her hat's
- 17:14right here on the table, and the robot's tied up to the dock.
- 17:15Maybe she got a lift when places her YouTube got friends and Maria's brother.
- 17:22The Trembles don't like visitors, Captain Trembles, don't you think you're a bit
- 17:26hasty? Suppose your wife is posing for Eric Cambell not a perfectly nice women,
- 17:32not only days not my wife. It's the door of his studio.
- 17:37Hey, Harry, coping up. I know my wife's in there. Open
- 17:41this door. I'll break it down, all right, all right, really,
- 17:48Ralph, you have to be so boisterous, not yelling into a gale.
- 17:52You know where are you, Claire? You're right, I am here.
- 17:55Oh really, Ralph, this is too naughty. At I'm getting my
- 17:59project. Anything you have birthday. It's a surprise there it is. Eric.
- 18:03I told you to keep away from my wife, but when I come
- 18:07back unexpectedly, I find you both in the studio with a door locked.
- 18:08Don't be so Victorian Darling. Eric hates to be interrupted when yes, I
- 18:14do go away, old boys. Wait to get on with the portrait.
- 18:17The players with a portrait you'll never do any more. Penny on this canvas,
- 18:21Nicky carrying the picture to say, rugged, I hope you realize you've
- 18:26destroyed a priceless work of awe. Don't worry, I'll pay you for it,
- 18:30although I have my doubts about how priceless it is. Claire, get
- 18:33your things together. We're leaving this house this minute. Let's loan and I'll
- 18:37be decided to take it to the main lander us. Good, you go
- 18:41ahead. I'll join you on the dock as soon as I've made out a
- 18:45check for my cousin's priceless work of art. Think. I don't see why
- 19:03you insist on going back to shipbregg Island. We just left it a short
- 19:07while ago. I know it passed people. I got to thinking Eric Tremble
- 19:11may not be the nicest guy in the world, but I'd hate to see
- 19:14anything happen to him. I think it ought to be fair to warn him.
- 19:18What about what about the captain's crazy jealousy? From the things he said
- 19:22as we were taking him and his wife back to the mainland, I suddenly
- 19:26realized how intensely he hates RK. I don't think Eric realizes. Good,
- 19:30great, look hide off to the Tremble top. It's a police launch.
- 19:34Yes, A'm too late passing. What a pool? I was not to
- 19:38come back right away. Oh, Mick, look this petendants Riley standing on
- 19:42the breakwater. Something serious must have happened. If he's been called in.
- 19:48Oh then it's not should be back when you heard the news. But you're
- 19:52too lately, right, the whole thing's home? What off, Lieutenant?
- 19:56You trumbled dead with a crazy back. What happened? Hanged himself? You're
- 20:03just waiting for the photographers to finish before we cut him down. All right,
- 20:06I don't touch him, don't touch a thing. Did I have a
- 20:08chance to say him? But that doesn't suicide. It's murder. And would
- 20:26you mind telling me why you're so sure that he's suicide? Because Eric Trumble
- 20:30was psychologically and capable of killing himself. Do you think the captain came back
- 20:34and did it. No, the captain wouldn't have hanged him now if he'd
- 20:38been beaten to death, couldn't where it's the housekeeper's just down the hallway,
- 20:45taking it awful hard. She is okay, Nick, after you mm hmm.
- 20:53He played the ground that best sixth senses. Each inches is enough.
- 21:00Examiner took a look at him and says it's death placed tangulation. Me,
- 21:03by no mistake. I'm not doing that. Is there? Nothing can touch
- 21:07rawling, not to thing, Nick, And it's definitely murdered. Ah no,
- 21:11you don't, Nick. Just take a look at this here. Suicide
- 21:15note can there in his chest. I can't live without her and I won't
- 21:19done very Trumble. Let's be praised in his own headwriting chicks who the writing
- 21:25we found in his diary possible. But this is only part of a piece
- 21:27of paper. The upper part missing is so good. It's a suicide note.
- 21:33That's enough for me, Rile. If a man's going to commit suicide,
- 21:34he has to stand on something, puck, tear even a few books,
- 21:37and then pick them away from him. But there's nothing here, nothing
- 21:41within fifteen feet of the spot where the body's hanging. You're right. Consequently,
- 21:47Trumble was strung up by someone else, someone who threw the rope over
- 21:51that beam, all the body up, and then tied the rope to that
- 21:53bright and not await him. What would mister Trumble be doing all that while
- 21:57there's no signs of a struggle here? Travelway, because the murderer was careful
- 22:00to sneak up behind him and knock him unconscious. First, you're medical examine.
- 22:06I will take a good look, Riley. I think you'll discover a
- 22:07lump at the base of the brain somewhere. He had better go and talk
- 22:12to him. Who would ever think I'm looking for a lumpy was hiding Nick
- 22:19right away, Patty, then as Ion pined, the so called suicide Now
- 22:26all right, what's up. It's Maria here. You want to talk to
- 22:30you. I hear what you said that it is not a suicide, and
- 22:33that the truth. I'm afraid so, Maria, I knew it. I
- 22:37knew it. It wasn't a captain. They had a terrible by the fight
- 22:40after you left to go to the boat this morning, Maria, what makes
- 22:42you so sure that Captain Trumble killed his cousin that knows you have a new
- 22:45hands. It's part of a letter, miss Eric, since the three days
- 22:48ago to New Bad Food, where the captain and ship are gone. Mister
- 22:52Eric was in love with the captain's wife. He was a pictures. Yes
- 22:55we know that. I know what's the welly you fight it on the dock.
- 22:57We were there less than five minutes for him, five minutes of the
- 23:03prity. What makes you so sure it wasn't somebody else, somebody who came
- 23:07to the island after we left, Because when you were gone and lock all
- 23:11of the doors in the window, I go to the kitchen to fix me
- 23:12to airs to the lunch. You gon I pick it up to him that
- 23:18and you're sure no one else was here. You didn't open the door to
- 23:21anyone's straight on the Bible. Tell me, Maria, why did you kill
- 23:26Eric? You're wrong, the captain level of this letter was written for him.
- 23:33The captain didn't do it, Maria. But two reasons. One,
- 23:36the letter, though undubtedly written by Eric, was never sent. But how
- 23:40could you possibly know that? Because this torn suicide note covers more than half
- 23:42a sheet of notepapers. Any letter that's gone through the mail has been folded
- 23:45at least one. This one was never folded, consequently never sent. The
- 23:51second and the most important reason. As we left the island this morning with
- 23:56the captain and his wife, I happened to take a look at the house.
- 24:00Crumble, alive and healthy, was glaring at it from his studio window.
- 24:03No. No, consequently, Maria, since no one entered the house
- 24:07after we left, and since you were alone with Eric Trumble, the only
- 24:11person who can possibly be responsible for his death is you, Maria. Your
- 24:17last name is Trumble, Maria Tromble. I was there. It's wife,
- 24:25That's why I was killed. Yes, I had an idea that was a
- 24:27reason marriage. It's twenty yeth it on the sorrento when I nursed him battle
- 24:32from the bed. During all this time, no one has evern known.
- 24:36I told him my house and a man in the farm. It was that
- 24:38money paid for his first exhibition. So I do not begrudge him that he
- 24:42was a genius or they are not like other men. After e a little
- 24:48while, I did not even mind h a love of faith, so long
- 24:51as it was only his mother. You see, I knew they would not
- 24:55have last. But the assignment was a difference. The captain's wife, she
- 25:00was a woman of he's on the class. He wanted her to divorce to
- 25:03the captain and markim. I don't know what would have become of me this
- 25:10afternoon, and I found the later he was ride into the captain. I
- 25:12know it was all but between its I know he was true with me.
- 25:18After all the hardships, all the insults. Something in a strange, and
- 25:23of course I'm not sorry. Do you think that it's strange? No,
- 25:32I got the berthy lost monster. You're right again. He turned a love
- 25:41as biggest eggs behind his left ears. You got, you got any idea
- 25:45who could have done it? Maria Rallian m with Eric's wife. I have
- 25:51no doubt she'll be glad to tell you whatever you want to know. In
- 26:11just a moment, Nick will be back to give you the final details of
- 26:14today's story and tell you what caused the rocking of the haunted rocking chair.

- 27:41It takes money as well as men to finish this war. The men
- 27:44are doing the big job overseas. Let's do our job over here to raise
- 27:48the money. Now during the Mighty Seventh War, lown drives, invest all
- 27:53you can in your future and Americas. And now let's hear from Nick Carter
- 28:04himself. Nick, what happened to Maria? Did Riley arrest her as Kenny
- 28:11did, but he died before he could be brought to trial? What about
- 28:15the rocking chair? After considerable observation, we found out it was just a
- 28:18trumbled cat. He used to climb up the trees, jump through the broken
- 28:22pane and into the chair which stood right beside the window. He'd sit there
- 28:26in the old chair and wash yourself, and her movement would make the old
- 28:30chair rock. But how come the cat just started recently to sit in the
- 28:33old chair like that. How we learned it was only recently that the cat
- 28:37came to live at the house. Disgustingly simple, when you know the answers.
- 28:40That's what I always say, and Nick always laughs at me when I
- 28:42say it. It's true. Well, what's about your story for next week?
- 28:45Nick got a couple of not too well veiled hints on that one.
- 28:48Well, I don't see why not. Ken, Patsy and I were taking
- 28:52a short cut to the park one day in my car, which is more
- 28:56like a police flood car than a pleasure car, and we heard a police
- 29:00call over the radio directing the nearest squad car to a certain address to take
- 29:04care of the dead body, and were really interested to find that the address
- 29:08where the body had been found was our own office at forth and Sis,
- 29:12Well, that sounds like an interesting start to his story. And when the
- 29:15band of thieves kidnapped me and to say, jumping for nector, Well,
- 29:22Nick, what do you call a story? The body on the doorsteps?

- 30:48speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers all over America and saying, so long
- 30:52until next week. This is a mutual broadcasting system. Welcome back. I
- 31:18have not been enjoying the new directions and scripts this one's and it does,
- 31:25I guess come from part of it, I think is from the fact of
- 31:29having so many missing episodes. But this definitely sounds very familiar. We've heard
- 31:36the plot of the thing that goes does something and then somebody dies, and
- 31:42also we've heard the plot of the killer being terminally ill. Anyway, so
- 31:49really beyond the means of any meaningful punishment. The good news is that the
- 31:53writing on this series is going to change to out so hopefully it will get
- 31:59better again. I miss the more daredevil Nick Carter exploits we had that were
- 32:04much more in keeping with the pulp style, but we'll see if we get
- 32:07back to them in the course of the series. Well, now we turn
- 32:10to some listener comment and feedback, and we have an email here from Gary
- 32:16who said, I just wanted to ask if the Charlie Chan Radio show is
- 32:21any good and if you ever planned to air it. Well, it's tough
- 32:24to say whether it is actually any good because we all well, to put
- 32:32it simply, what we have of Charlie Chan Radio Program is we have scattered
- 32:38episodes of the nineteen thirty serials, not so much that you could actually put
- 32:45together into a complete story. The other thing that we have is we have
- 32:52one episode of the nineteen forties Charlie Chan Radio program with At Bagel and actually
- 33:00played that over on the war. But that's the only thing that survives from
- 33:07Charlie Chan in the US and the nineteen forties. And then we have a
- 33:10series of Australian Charlie Chan dramas which actually we're pretty good. We do plan
- 33:17to get to them eventually on this series. You can in the meantime check
- 33:22out episode one ninety three of the war. And I do think it is
- 33:25too bad there aren't more episodes out there, but we will get to them
- 33:30eventually. But that'll do it for today. Sendor comments to Box thirteen at
