- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin.
- 0:20Speaker 2: The youngest. Hiam's sister, Alana, started playing music with her
- 0:23Speaker 2: older sisters Danielle and SD when she was just four
- 0:26Speaker 2: years old. Back then, the three of them were part
- 0:29Speaker 2: of their family band Rockenheim, playing charity gigs all over
- 0:33Speaker 2: la in the valley where they grew up. After high school,
- 0:36Speaker 2: Danielle was jamming and Laurel Canyon when Jenny Lewis spotted
- 0:39Speaker 2: her and invited her to join her touring band. Not
- 0:42Speaker 2: long after, she hit the road again, this time playing
- 0:44Speaker 2: guitar and drums for Julian Casablancis. But eventually Danielle came
- 0:48Speaker 2: back home, but did to start a band with her sisters.
- 0:51Speaker 2: In twenty twelve, Hyam dropped their first EP, Forever, to
- 0:54Speaker 2: critical acclaim. Pretty soon they were opening for a listers
- 0:58Speaker 2: like Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- 1:01Speaker 2: On today's episode, Lee ro sits down with Alana, Danielle,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and st to talk about their new album I Quit,
- 1:06Speaker 2: co produced with longtime collaborator Ross Them. The album dives
- 1:10Speaker 2: into the highs and lows of single life in your thirties.
- 1:13Speaker 2: The sisters also share why they still think like an
- 1:15Speaker 2: opening band even when they're headlining stadiums in the moment
- 1:19Speaker 2: they realize as kids that not everyone was growing up
- 1:21Speaker 2: playing in the band with their parents. This is broken record,
- 1:27Speaker 2: real musicians, real conversations. Here's Lea Rose with him.
- 1:38Speaker 3: So I want to give you guys an opportunity to
- 1:40Speaker 3: go really deep on the new album.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, I've.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Been listening to it, and I just want to say
- 1:47Speaker 3: up top that I think the songwriting on the album.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Is really really strong, thank you.
- 1:54Speaker 3: And I was reading through the lyrics and I feel
- 1:57Speaker 3: like it's like reading a really great short story where
- 2:01Speaker 3: you I know where the writer like, I know exactly
- 2:04Speaker 3: what the writer is going through, and I feel like
- 2:08Speaker 3: the production around it is so strong and it's really
- 2:11Speaker 3: complimenting the writing. And I think you guys have done
- 2:14Speaker 3: a fantastic job on the Yeah, it's been so great.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So let's talk about the first song on the album, Gone.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Does this?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Do you see this sort of like.
- 2:27Speaker 3: When you were sequencing the album? Do you see this
- 2:30Speaker 3: as sort of setting the tone for the entire album?
- 2:34Speaker 6: Yeah, So when we started writing this song, it was
- 2:36Speaker 6: actually towards the end of the album process, and I think,
- 2:43Speaker 6: you know, we as sisters were talking about like what's
- 2:46Speaker 6: missing from the story, what's missing from a sonic perspective,
- 2:51Speaker 6: And I think we were listening to a lot of
- 2:54Speaker 6: the Beyonce Cowboy Carter album and just loving the way
- 3:01Speaker 6: that she was mixing all of these samples and referencing
- 3:04Speaker 6: things that I think she's always done and it's something
- 3:06Speaker 6: that we've always really love in.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Certain songs, and we've never done that, we've.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Actually so the sample and question is a sample from
- 3:17Speaker 6: George Michael's Freedom ninety Freedom ninety.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:20Speaker 5: I was so excited when I figured there out.
- 3:22Speaker 6: I was like, yes, We're such huge fans of George Michael.
- 3:26Speaker 6: Has always been faith like has been a touchstone in
- 3:32Speaker 6: the high and like Sonic universe since the beginning. And
- 3:37Speaker 6: so I remember feeling like, Okay, we we I feel
- 3:41Speaker 6: like we need a track one. We need to like
- 3:43Speaker 6: bring the listener in story wise, and how do we
- 3:47Speaker 6: how do we do that? What's the kind of feeling
- 3:50Speaker 6: that we kind of want this track one to evoke?
- 3:53Speaker 4: And it was this kind of like.
- 3:54Speaker 7: Freedom, you know, And it was a I think when
- 3:58Speaker 7: I went into the studio, and first of all, we
- 4:02Speaker 7: were at the point where like Rosson was like we
- 4:04Speaker 7: have the album.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and we were like, keep going right the album.
- 4:09Speaker 4: It means that there is one more song in you.
- 4:12Speaker 8: I feel like anytime that sentence is uttered in the studio,
- 4:15Speaker 8: you have one more.
- 4:16Speaker 4: You always have one more. Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Do you guys feel like exhausted by this process? Is
- 4:22Speaker 3: it like pulling teeth like getting the songs out or
- 4:25Speaker 3: do you have more than enough?
- 4:26Speaker 6: Oh? Getting the songs out is I think the most
- 4:28Speaker 6: fun part. I think finishing songs is a bit tougher
- 4:32Speaker 6: because we just really want to perfect the production, I think,
- 4:40Speaker 6: but we've been a little bit more looser about that.
- 4:42Speaker 5: I think, yeah, like less precious, less precious.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, great for us.
- 4:48Speaker 3: And for my mental Yes, and I feel like the
- 4:52Speaker 3: I'm jumping ahead, but I feel like the last third
- 4:56Speaker 3: of the album things sort of change. Was that something
- 5:01Speaker 3: I mean, do you think that's accurate? And is that
- 5:05Speaker 3: something that was sort of I also saw Rostam post
- 5:10Speaker 3: about it and say track eleven, twelve, and thirteen are
- 5:14Speaker 3: different from anything you've ever heard from Higham.
- 5:17Speaker 4: I have to look at the sea.
- 5:19Speaker 5: They can tell you what they are say.
- 5:21Speaker 4: They are crying, spinning and baby blood on the street.
- 5:25Speaker 4: On the street.
- 5:26Speaker 5: It's try to Feel My Pain, Spinning and.
- 5:30Speaker 8: Cry, Yeah, try to feel my pain. Yeah with specifically
- 5:35Speaker 8: with Cry and Spinning. I think what he's explaining is
- 5:39Speaker 8: that it's the first time on any High album that
- 5:42Speaker 8: I'm singing lead on Spinning as he's singing lead on Cry,
- 5:46Speaker 8: which we've never done before, and those songs actually came
- 5:50Speaker 8: very like. The thing that's amazing about working with Rossam
- 5:53Speaker 8: is it's like he's he's like a cheerleader. He's up
- 5:56Speaker 8: for anything, like there's no there's no bad ideas. And
- 6:01Speaker 8: I think making Spinning it was like a funny day
- 6:04Speaker 8: where I was like falling in love with somebody that
- 6:06Speaker 8: I wasn't supposed to fall in love with.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Now in hindsight, I'm like, why did I fall in
- 6:10Speaker 4: love with this person?
- 6:10Speaker 8: But it's that like ooey gooey first like three weeks
- 6:14Speaker 8: of like starting to detect someone and starting to talk
- 6:17Speaker 8: to somebody, and I was like fully in this like
- 6:20Speaker 8: rabbit hole, falling down this rabbit hole, and.
- 6:22Speaker 4: We decided to write a song about it.
- 6:24Speaker 8: The relationship did not last, stockingly did not last.
- 6:30Speaker 4: But it was so fun.
- 6:31Speaker 8: I mean, just to side it, he was like, let's
- 6:32Speaker 8: you know and honestly, up until the last couple of
- 6:35Speaker 8: weeks of the album, like I was like, we didn't.
- 6:37Speaker 8: I was like, I don't I love this song? Does
- 6:39Speaker 8: it fit on this album? And it felt like where
- 6:42Speaker 8: it was in the sequencing it kind of fit having
- 6:45Speaker 8: Cry and yeah, I'm.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Very close to their like little sisters too.
- 6:50Speaker 8: Yeah, but yeah, it's different, different stuff. Trying to think
- 6:53Speaker 8: we still you know, we still try new things in
- 6:55Speaker 8: this band.
- 6:56Speaker 3: How do you guys feel about singing lead? Is that
- 6:58Speaker 3: something that you wanted to happen before or how do.
- 7:02Speaker 8: I mean, honestly, we'll see how it goes live. It's
- 7:07Speaker 8: gonna be great. No, it's it's all that I mean.
- 7:09Speaker 8: I honestly, sometimes I look at Danielle and I'm like,
- 7:11Speaker 8: I don't know how you do this.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Like I was playing the guitar at the same time,
- 7:15Speaker 3: I was thinking.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Like Danielle can sing lead.
- 7:18Speaker 8: Danielle sing lead, you know, see like on a unicycle
- 7:21Speaker 8: at this point, like yell it.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Like I look at her and I was like, I
- 7:25Speaker 4: do not know how you do this? All the time, yes,
- 7:29Speaker 4: because it's I mean, I'm in ah, my little sister,
- 7:32Speaker 4: I'm a little sister. That's an but it's definitely something new.
- 7:37Speaker 8: It's a new it's a new feeling that I never
- 7:40Speaker 8: was like striving for, but happy that it happened. But
- 7:43Speaker 8: there was never a point where I was like I
- 7:46Speaker 8: want to sing lead.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I'm like anything.
- 7:48Speaker 8: I was like, roth, I don't want to, like Danielle
- 7:51Speaker 8: will sound better on this song, and everybody collectively like, no,
- 7:55Speaker 8: it's good, it's good, it's good. But no, there was
- 7:57Speaker 8: like never a point where I was like trying to
- 8:00Speaker 8: sing lead. If anything, I love giving it to Dinyelle.
- 8:03Speaker 6: But also that's a testament to that Like ross Dam,
- 8:06Speaker 6: we were just trying new things in the studio and
- 8:09Speaker 6: he always is so open to that, which is really
- 8:13Speaker 6: nice to have and a producer.
- 8:15Speaker 4: And I love how cry came out. I think it's
- 8:20Speaker 4: such an important part on the album. It's fun. It's
- 8:24Speaker 4: fun to write too and not.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I mean when you listen to the song and you
- 8:29Speaker 1: listen to the what the sentiment is, you wouldn't think
- 8:32Speaker 1: it would be fun, but it was really.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Is it fun because it's cathartic?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it was fun because like I was, I think
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'd been holding in a lot of just this feeling
- 8:43Speaker 1: of like being tired of crying so much about things
- 8:48Speaker 1: that had happened to me, and then wanting to just
- 8:52Speaker 1: kind of be done with the tears and to be
- 8:55Speaker 1: moving on into something that you know, didn't make me
- 8:59Speaker 1: cry tears of pain anymore, and more tears of joy.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Totally, yes, less oily, more joy, you know.
- 9:07Speaker 1: No, So I in the studio it was, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I'm really lucky that Danielle and Alana can they can
- 9:17Speaker 1: kind of tell when I think we can all kind
- 9:19Speaker 1: of tell when we come into the studio and something's up. Yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 1: And I think that day in particular, I'd gotten a
- 9:27Speaker 1: text message from an X and I was feeling really
- 9:30Speaker 1: really emotional about it.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And they knew.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Without me even saying anything, that something was wrong. And
- 9:41Speaker 1: the second they said that, I immediately burst into tears
- 9:44Speaker 1: because they they you know, they can without even like
- 9:51Speaker 1: just a look, they know exactly what's going on. And
- 9:55Speaker 1: so I think the lyrics just kind of fell out
- 9:58Speaker 1: of of all of us.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I think that we've all kind of been there.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Then. Yeah, it's to the Lana's point, it's going to
- 10:04Speaker 1: be interesting seeing it live. But I think I think
- 10:09Speaker 1: all of us, I think with the songs that we do,
- 10:11Speaker 1: we kind of are transported. Whenever we're singing them, we're
- 10:14Speaker 1: transported almost back to the place that.
- 10:16Speaker 4: We were when we wrote it.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I think there's definitely been times, I think, when all
- 10:20Speaker 1: of us have cried on stage at the point, and
- 10:25Speaker 1: I think a lot of that comes from, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: kind of reliving the place that.
- 10:30Speaker 4: We were when we wrote it, when we.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Were experiencing it, and I think it's a it's a
- 10:36Speaker 1: blessing in some ways.
- 10:37Speaker 4: It's also it can be kind of fucking rough.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't you know, it doesn't deter us from
- 10:44Speaker 1: wanting to play them live and wanting to tour, which
- 10:46Speaker 1: is the good news.
- 10:48Speaker 4: We like, you know, we still love playing live.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I feel like that's a little bit rare.
- 10:54Speaker 3: A lot of people I interview it sounds like they
- 10:57Speaker 3: kind of hate.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Being on the road. I know, it's just got comfortable.
- 11:02Speaker 8: And I think it just goes back when we started
- 11:07Speaker 8: High I'm Officially in two thousand and seven. We genuinely,
- 11:11Speaker 8: I mean, we've been playing instruments together.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Since I was four years old. We've been live since
- 11:16Speaker 4: I was a baby.
- 11:18Speaker 8: But when Hi I'm officially started in two thousand and seven,
- 11:20Speaker 8: we always just considered ourselves a live band rather than
- 11:24Speaker 8: a recording band, because we genuinely didn't have the knowledge
- 11:27Speaker 8: of we would go into a studio.
- 11:28Speaker 4: We'd like, save up all of our money for a year,
- 11:31Speaker 4: go to a.
- 11:32Speaker 8: Studio, sounds really great, and rehearsal we hosted for months, months, years,
- 11:38Speaker 8: like literally we were rehearsed. We would make sure our
- 11:39Speaker 8: parts were perfect, and we would go find a studio
- 11:44Speaker 8: that we could afford, and we would have one day
- 11:47Speaker 8: and in our minds, we have, okay, we have one
- 11:48Speaker 8: day to record seven songs. Yeah, oh my gosh, if
- 11:54Speaker 8: somebody can do that, like amazing, we could not.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Yeah, we just we didn't have that.
- 11:58Speaker 6: We didn't have the knowledge of I mean going into
- 12:01Speaker 6: a studio and recording instruments even just like like no idea,
- 12:06Speaker 6: you know, how do we just we didn't even know
- 12:08Speaker 6: that we could refer and say can to the engineer,
- 12:10Speaker 6: hey can we get this to sound like that?
- 12:12Speaker 4: We just had no for knowledge or the engineer would
- 12:16Speaker 4: be like, we'll do it in post. Yeah, like wech
- 12:18Speaker 4: tells you that. That's like you can't me that.
- 12:22Speaker 6: From two thousand and two twelve, when we finally figured
- 12:26Speaker 6: out kind of what our sound was we were just
- 12:30Speaker 6: play live, like every weekend, whatever gig we could get
- 12:34Speaker 6: in La, we just played.
- 12:37Speaker 8: And our goal in recording was just so we could
- 12:40Speaker 8: play live. Yeah, because back in then, you wouldn't be
- 12:43Speaker 8: able to get booked on gigs unless I mean I'm
- 12:44Speaker 8: aging myself, but you had to have a my space,
- 12:48Speaker 8: and what venues would do is they would go on
- 12:51Speaker 8: your MySpace, they would look at you know, your track,
- 12:53Speaker 8: and if they liked it, they would book you. And
- 12:55Speaker 8: like we could not, I mean, to our credit, we
- 12:58Speaker 8: always knew that the that.
- 13:00Speaker 4: If we didn't like something, we didn't want to put
- 13:02Speaker 4: it out.
- 13:02Speaker 8: Even back in the day, even to get a gig,
- 13:05Speaker 8: we were like, if it's not good.
- 13:06Speaker 4: We can't do this.
- 13:07Speaker 8: So there's not many I mean there are some please
- 13:10Speaker 8: don't look at but there are some recordings that are
- 13:14Speaker 8: out there. But really we thought that all we wanted
- 13:18Speaker 8: to do is play. And even from our earliest gigs
- 13:21Speaker 8: of like our first tours, like we were just so
- 13:23Speaker 8: forever grateful to be out in the road because we
- 13:25Speaker 8: would play like four people in LA and once we
- 13:27Speaker 8: started toying, I mean my first tour, luckily Danielle was
- 13:30Speaker 8: playing with Julian Casablancis at the time on his solo record,
- 13:34Speaker 8: and he graciously gave us the opening slot for a
- 13:38Speaker 8: couple of gigs.
- 13:39Speaker 4: And I was in high school, I was seven, Like cool,
- 13:41Speaker 4: does people think you were super cool for doing that? Yeah?
- 13:44Speaker 4: I mean yes, well I thought I was cool.
- 13:48Speaker 8: Finally for the first time, I think it was I
- 13:50Speaker 8: had looked, I had looked at I mean, obviously the
- 13:52Speaker 8: Strokes is such a you know, pivotal band in our
- 13:56Speaker 8: musical upbringing.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Yeah, But going on.
- 13:59Speaker 8: Tour at fresh eighteen, I thought, you know, this is it,
- 14:02Speaker 8: this is gonna be my life. Didn't happen quite as
- 14:06Speaker 8: fast as thought it was going to happen. But the
- 14:10Speaker 8: just that first tour, like that first like taste of
- 14:12Speaker 8: like we could play music together in other places, in
- 14:16Speaker 8: other cities.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Like our valley haunts, was mind blowing.
- 14:23Speaker 8: And so every band that took us on tour, I
- 14:26Speaker 8: mean opening, those few years of opening were the greatest
- 14:30Speaker 8: years I think our lives, because it was just we
- 14:32Speaker 8: were just so forever grateful that a band would take
- 14:35Speaker 8: us out on the road and would want us to play.
- 14:39Speaker 4: And still to this day, I'm like, I love opening.
- 14:41Speaker 4: It's great. Yeah, and it seems like you're.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Pressure build though, you know, because if somebody is there
- 14:47Speaker 3: to see the big like whoever is the headlining act,
- 14:50Speaker 3: Like do you feel like you have to win them
- 14:52Speaker 3: over or do you guys?
- 14:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's not going week. Yeah, it's not
- 14:56Speaker 4: for the week, but you have to go in knowing
- 14:58Speaker 4: I have. Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 6: I think we still go out on like our own
- 15:03Speaker 6: shows when we're headlining, like with the same.
- 15:07Speaker 8: People are gonna leave after our opener. Now we're like, oh,
- 15:10Speaker 8: we're actually here for us. But I think that's like beautiful,
- 15:14Speaker 8: big Yes, I think we'll forever have big, big, open
- 15:19Speaker 8: mentality because it's actually more fun that way. I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 8: wee we did have always taken our live show extremely
- 15:25Speaker 8: seriously and because that's also where we have the most fun.
- 15:30Speaker 4: So recording has now kind of like caught up with it.
- 15:34Speaker 8: I think now we're more comfortable in the studio and
- 15:36Speaker 8: we have a lot more fun in the studio. But
- 15:39Speaker 8: there is nothing like showing up to a city. You
- 15:42Speaker 8: like wake up and you're in a new place. You
- 15:44Speaker 8: like have to get your bearings, have to figure out
- 15:46Speaker 8: what you're gonna do, and you play a show.
- 15:47Speaker 4: It's like that first light drop still to this.
- 15:51Speaker 8: Day, Like no matter where I am, what show when
- 15:54Speaker 8: the lights go off, it's the biggest high I'll ever have.
- 15:58Speaker 4: In my life.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I know a lot of people struggle with like keeping
- 16:01Speaker 3: that high going specifically.
- 16:03Speaker 4: We're good. We've been touring for over what is.
- 16:08Speaker 8: It well, almost fifteen years, Like it's.
- 16:12Speaker 4: So crazy that it doesn't end.
- 16:14Speaker 8: Yeah, it's because you keep on going a new venues,
- 16:19Speaker 8: Like it's just exciting.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Nothing is ever the same, No tour is ever the same.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Yeah, do you guys hang out with each other when
- 16:26Speaker 3: you're not like doing sound check or what's the like
- 16:29Speaker 3: off dates, I get.
- 16:30Speaker 9: In, I get in the car, and I leave off
- 16:34Speaker 9: and go let those three individual buses were always Yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah, we're always together. We always always got together. Yeah, No, we're.
- 16:42Speaker 8: All well because also it's like what I don't I'm
- 16:45Speaker 8: also I have the worst sense.
- 16:46Speaker 9: Of direction, Like I how did you talk about that?
- 16:50Speaker 8: Like I am it's a hi am jokes Like every
- 16:53Speaker 8: time I'm like you guys, we gotta go right, it's
- 16:55Speaker 8: left Like I like me alone in the stace, even
- 17:00Speaker 8: with like phone and a map, like I will get
- 17:03Speaker 8: I will wind up somewhere, not like in a different state, like.
- 17:07Speaker 4: They're like, how did you get that? So I'm happy
- 17:10Speaker 4: to be with them all.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Now. Time for a summer sit moment, brought to you
- 17:16Speaker 2: by the Starbucks Coffee Company. One of the things I
- 17:19Speaker 2: love most about summer are the summer songs. You know them,
- 17:23Speaker 2: the songs that make you want to roll your windows
- 17:24Speaker 2: down and drive just a little bit longer or walk
- 17:27Speaker 2: a little bit slower to enjoy the moment. I mean,
- 17:29Speaker 2: just thinking about some of the songs from last year,
- 17:31Speaker 2: like Hot to Go by Chapelarone, Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter,
- 17:35Speaker 2: and Nasty by Tanache make me so excited for the
- 17:38Speaker 2: summer to come. Summer songs have become the unofficial soundtrack
- 17:42Speaker 2: to so many of my summer memories, whether I'm on
- 17:44Speaker 2: a hike, cutting them on local Starbucks, or just stuck
- 17:47Speaker 2: in traffic pretending I'm somewhere cooler. These are the tracks
- 17:50Speaker 2: I never get tired of. They sneak on my playlist
- 17:53Speaker 2: every summer without fail. When you boil it down, Summer's
- 17:56Speaker 2: about two things, trying to stay cool and trying to
- 17:59Speaker 2: enjoy as much summer fun as possible. Luckily, I've found
- 18:02Speaker 2: something that helps with both the Summer Burrier Refresher from Starbucks.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Just take a sip at a second to cool down
- 18:08Speaker 2: and then each summer moment. Years before Broken Record, I
- 18:12Speaker 2: used to work at Starbucks, so I love seeing which
- 18:14Speaker 2: seasonal menu items are now available. My favorite this summer
- 18:18Speaker 2: is the Summer Berry Refresher, a bright blend of berry
- 18:21Speaker 2: flavors all shaken with ice import over raspberry flavored pearls.
- 18:24Speaker 2: This beverage delivers a burst of raspberry flavor in every sip.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Being in Los Angeles, the summers can be brutally long
- 18:32Speaker 2: and hot, so I couldn't wait to try this one out.
- 18:34Speaker 2: And man, the beverage really is refreshing. The Summer Berrier
- 18:38Speaker 2: Refresher is the perfect companion to cool you down. I
- 18:41Speaker 2: promise I'm all in for the ice beverages at Starbucks.
- 18:44Speaker 2: There's something about the first sip of something iced and
- 18:47Speaker 2: refreshing that hits differently when the sun's high in the
- 18:49Speaker 2: afternoon sky. I like to carve out a little moment
- 18:52Speaker 2: of me time, so I swing by my neighborhood Starbucks,
- 18:54Speaker 2: grab a drink and just be for a bit before
- 18:57Speaker 2: I head into the studio to record Broken Record and
- 19:00Speaker 2: especially now that summer is here, that ritual is even sweeter.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I was very excited to see the Summer Barry Refresher
- 19:06Speaker 2: return to the Starbucks menu and Broken Record host Leah
- 19:09Speaker 2: Rose recently tried it too on her recent vacation back
- 19:12Speaker 2: East Lea. What made you stop by Starbucks and pick
- 19:15Speaker 2: up a summer berry refresher?
- 19:17Speaker 5: So I tried the Summer Berry Refresher on a super
- 19:21Speaker 5: super hot, humid Maryland day.
- 19:23Speaker 4: I was sweating.
- 19:24Speaker 3: We were lugging a bunch of stuff around, getting ready
- 19:26Speaker 3: to go to the pool, and I saw Starbucks and
- 19:29Speaker 3: to my husband, I'm like, pull over, pull over, poll over,
- 19:31Speaker 3: I need to get this summer Berry refresher drink. And
- 19:35Speaker 3: I got it, and it's so beautiful And the first
- 19:37Speaker 3: thing I wanted to do was take a picture of it.
- 19:39Speaker 2: And of course it looks nice, right, it looks nice.
- 19:41Speaker 3: It looks so beautiful, the colors are so pretty, and
- 19:44Speaker 3: it has those raspberry pearls. But I was so hot,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I just like had to drink it immediately. I started
- 19:50Speaker 3: drinking it. And the craziest, most unexpected thing about it
- 19:55Speaker 3: is those raspberry pearls.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they're nice, A nice little touch They're.
- 20:00Speaker 3: A nice touch, and they add more flavor to it,
- 20:03Speaker 3: like each pearl when it bursts, it's like a whole
- 20:05Speaker 3: different berry flavor.
- 20:07Speaker 4: I was so into it.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, just the texture of this is different, and it
- 20:11Speaker 2: just makes that drink so refreshing nice. It's crazy.
- 20:15Speaker 3: It was incredible and it immediately did the job. And
- 20:18Speaker 3: I was so happy that I pulled over and got one.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Yeah, my kids love it too. It's hard. Now. I
- 20:23Speaker 2: love my coffee, but every time I go to Starbucks,
- 20:24Speaker 2: now I got to think about I'm I gonna get
- 20:26Speaker 2: my coffee drink or I want to get my Summer
- 20:28Speaker 2: Barrier Fresher. And you know, I'll be honest, like lately,
- 20:31Speaker 2: the Summer Barrier Fresher is really winning. It's really winning
- 20:33Speaker 2: that battle.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 3: No, it's the perfect summer drink. And it's funny because
- 20:37Speaker 3: my whole family suddenly was fighting over it. My son
- 20:39Speaker 3: wanted to try it. He wanted the raspberry pearls. My
- 20:43Speaker 3: husband wanted to try it. So I ended up getting
- 20:45Speaker 3: like a third of the drink.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I know, you almost hate to drink it. It looks
- 20:49Speaker 2: so beautiful, I know.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Oh, and I didn't even get a picture of it
- 20:52Speaker 3: because we drank it too fast. I need another one.
- 20:55Speaker 2: The Summer Barrier Fresher is like the beverage version of
- 20:58Speaker 2: a summer song, easy bright, maybe a little unexpected, but
- 21:01Speaker 2: hits the spot and makes everything feel more like summer.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It's become part of my rhythm. So if you're building
- 21:07Speaker 2: your own soundtrack for the season, I'd also recommend adding
- 21:10Speaker 2: a Summer Bearer refresher to your rotation. It's refreshing, travels well,
- 21:14Speaker 2: it might just become part of your summer memory reel too.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Your Summer Bary Refresher is ready at Starbucks.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I'm sorry I laughed earlier when you said your relationship
- 21:24Speaker 3: didn't work out, the one that you really.
- 21:27Speaker 8: Honestly, my relationship that I've had has been a laugh
- 21:31Speaker 8: so you can please please feel free to.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Laugh at anything. Yeah, I didn't mean to laugh at you.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I was just laughing because it reminded me of the
- 21:38Speaker 3: line in the song relationships, where what is it?
- 21:42Speaker 5: Fucking relationships?
- 21:44Speaker 4: Don't they all end up this? Or they don't? What
- 21:46Speaker 4: is it? Yeah?
- 21:50Speaker 5: So it just reminded me of that, But I'm sorry.
- 21:54Speaker 8: The depth of our soul, Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 5: So tell me about that song that's the first single right,
- 22:01Speaker 5: first single single.
- 22:02Speaker 6: Yeah, it is actually the oldest song on the album.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Okay is this someone That's in twenty seventeen.
- 22:10Speaker 6: Started at Sean I wrote it. I started to write
- 22:13Speaker 6: it on my phone on an airplane. We were going
- 22:17Speaker 6: to Australia and I just opened up my garage band
- 22:21Speaker 6: on my phone, which I've written started, not written like
- 22:25Speaker 6: whole songs, but definitely started ideas on.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I love garage band.
- 22:31Speaker 6: It's what like superstitiously, I still write on garage band
- 22:37Speaker 6: because that's what we started writing on in like.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Twenty ten ten, right when we got your first when
- 22:45Speaker 4: I got my first back.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Yeah, but having garage band like truly blew my mind.
- 22:51Speaker 8: So I had on your phone is is even crazier?
- 22:56Speaker 6: It's yeah, it's really awesome. And anyway, so I started,
- 23:03Speaker 6: you know, this melody kind of came to me fucking
- 23:07Speaker 6: relationship and I was like, wait, that's good. It's a
- 23:11Speaker 6: good melody and it's a good lyric and that like
- 23:15Speaker 6: you know, that kind of rarely happens. I feel when
- 23:18Speaker 6: you get the lyric and the melody at the same time,
- 23:20Speaker 6: it's kind of like it feels like.
- 23:23Speaker 4: God is Yeah, something has been worldly.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's harder for you guys, melody or lyrics.
- 23:33Speaker 6: I wouldn't say like harder. I think melody maybe comes
- 23:37Speaker 6: a little quicker, really actually a lot quicker. Yeah, I
- 23:41Speaker 6: think so that's amazing, a little bit more labored over
- 23:44Speaker 6: and but yeah, melody, melody is like, melody is pretty quick.
- 23:50Speaker 3: How do you know you're not just singing something that's
- 23:52Speaker 3: already out there that you've heard.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Oh, we've done that before. That's the best.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Like you're like, oh, that's time after time.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Like she if I sing something, you're like, no, that's
- 24:02Speaker 4: this other song.
- 24:03Speaker 5: But she knows her music knowledge.
- 24:07Speaker 4: I think name that. I don't I want you to
- 24:10Speaker 4: go and name that tune.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Because there's a like shazamam, but it's I don't think
- 24:17Speaker 3: it's sam every day.
- 24:20Speaker 8: If I if you ever have that, like, why is
- 24:22Speaker 8: that so all? You can literally hum it to Essie
- 24:24Speaker 8: and she's like it's insane.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Honestly, we've tested it. I'm a woman of many talent.
- 24:32Speaker 1: That is like, that's very valuable, most proud of, most
- 24:35Speaker 1: proud of artist, song title, sometimes album title.
- 24:40Speaker 4: I don't have that.
- 24:41Speaker 6: I I can't, yeah that I have acquired, but that
- 24:45Speaker 6: doesn't stop us from I mean, I do it too.
- 24:48Speaker 6: There was a whole.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Period of time where everything I wrote sounded like Jurassic Park,
- 24:54Speaker 1: the Jurassic Park.
- 24:56Speaker 4: Who along as long.
- 25:00Speaker 5: As have you just seen it?
- 25:03Speaker 4: Williams Fan?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah, well yeah, you know, yeah, Yeah, I think melody,
- 25:08Speaker 1: I think meland he is.
- 25:10Speaker 4: I mean, I think they're both important. It's also just fun.
- 25:13Speaker 8: You're in the studio and you're passing around to mic
- 25:15Speaker 8: like it's very much like a group effort melody wise,
- 25:19Speaker 8: like just throwing things.
- 25:21Speaker 6: We actually start a lot of our songs from drum
- 25:25Speaker 6: patterns or you know. That's actually a big high end
- 25:30Speaker 6: thing where all drummers. First our dad is a drummer
- 25:33Speaker 6: and taught us drums. He we had two drum sets
- 25:36Speaker 6: set up in our living room growing up, and yeah,
- 25:40Speaker 6: it was incredible and he really imparted his.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Like drum percussion. Did the neighbors ever complain, I like, oh, no,
- 25:53Speaker 4: they were lucky. They liked it. Yeah, they liked it.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Which was when we had that We had one like
- 25:59Speaker 1: a xylophone player on one side, like a he I think,
- 26:05Speaker 1: wasn't he in like classic harmonic, classically trained?
- 26:09Speaker 3: He was like?
- 26:10Speaker 4: And then on the other side it was he was deaf.
- 26:13Speaker 4: He was deaf. Yeah, he had a death neighbor.
- 26:15Speaker 9: So so never like not having perfect for you guys,
- 26:20Speaker 9: I know, I.
- 26:21Speaker 6: Know he really lucked out actually because there was a point,
- 26:24Speaker 6: you know, my dad loves collecting instruments. There was a
- 26:26Speaker 6: point where it was like two drum sets, Timballe's, Longa's
- 26:32Speaker 6: cow bells, so like we would all just be jamming. Yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 6: my dad was obsessed with the recycler, which was which
- 26:39Speaker 6: was Craigslist.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Before Craigslist, it was like, oh, it was like a
- 26:42Speaker 4: little magazine every week.
- 26:44Speaker 8: And Mike okay, and this is obviously before you know,
- 26:47Speaker 8: the Internet, so people didn't know what they had.
- 26:49Speaker 4: So like my dad would get things at like crazy.
- 26:52Speaker 8: Ten dollars, fifteen dollars, like collecting as many things that
- 26:56Speaker 8: he could get. Yeah, my dad was like an original
- 27:00Speaker 8: Craigslist hunter. Now but not now people know what they have.
- 27:04Speaker 8: They can like hear how much things are.
- 27:07Speaker 6: But my dad like a really rate early sixties Ludwig set,
- 27:12Speaker 6: and because the church.
- 27:14Speaker 4: Was selling all of them in Barstow, my dad drove.
- 27:19Speaker 8: And cleaned out this lovely church that was selling all
- 27:23Speaker 8: of their instrument gear.
- 27:25Speaker 6: I ended up getting a great d W set that
- 27:27Speaker 6: he still plays. That's really cool. But yeah, oh so
- 27:31Speaker 6: he still plays.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he just played me just went to jazz best.
- 27:37Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I saw your mom on stage with you guys.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Y was our dad on the drum. Oh I didn't
- 27:42Speaker 4: realize that. That's so cool.
- 27:44Speaker 8: Rockenheim Before high there was Rockenheim and that was with
- 27:47Speaker 8: my parents.
- 27:48Speaker 4: That's so great.
- 27:50Speaker 3: When you were kids and you were in the band,
- 27:52Speaker 3: were you aware that your family was sort of different
- 27:56Speaker 3: than like your friend's families and that I remember the.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Moment that it happened.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I mean, at least from I remember the moment I
- 28:02Speaker 1: realized that we're we weren't normal.
- 28:06Speaker 4: When I grew up thinking that every family.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Had a family band, because why would I think anything different?
- 28:12Speaker 7: Right?
- 28:13Speaker 1: And then I remember a friend of mine was like,
- 28:16Speaker 1: s you do you want to go to the Fashion
- 28:17Speaker 1: Square this weekend? And I was like, well, I have rehearsal,
- 28:20Speaker 1: Like don't you have rehearsal on Saturday?
- 28:23Speaker 4: And my friends were like rehearsal for what? And I
- 28:27Speaker 4: was like with.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Your band and they were like no, what. And then
- 28:33Speaker 1: I just remember coming home and crying to my parents.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Like we're weird and we're so weird. We are so weird,
- 28:41Speaker 4: like mom and dad.
- 28:42Speaker 8: The thing that was like amazing about rockehem so like
- 28:45Speaker 8: my parents growing up.
- 28:46Speaker 4: I mean again, we're from Los Angeles.
- 28:47Speaker 8: So all we do is listen to the radio and
- 28:50Speaker 8: in the car, in the car when you're driving, and
- 28:53Speaker 8: there's this one specific station called KRS one oh one
- 28:56Speaker 8: that would play. At that point, it was fifties, sixties
- 29:00Speaker 8: and then only seventies.
- 29:02Speaker 4: I disc go Saturday night. Yeah, Saturday, I was slurday,
- 29:06Speaker 4: beach Saturday and do the dishes together.
- 29:08Speaker 8: But the thing that was so cool is that, like
- 29:10Speaker 8: my parents, what we would do is we would go home,
- 29:13Speaker 8: we would put on KTH one on one, we would
- 29:15Speaker 8: record songs to tape, and then my mom, like our
- 29:19Speaker 8: earliest moments of like learning music, is my mom.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Would figure out the Clark oh.
- 29:25Speaker 8: We would teach us how to play it, and then
- 29:28Speaker 8: we would listen to listen to it. I mean like
- 29:30Speaker 8: I want to say, like seventy five thousand times, and
- 29:31Speaker 8: we would write the lyrics down, so there were wrong
- 29:34Speaker 8: lyrics wrong, like terrible, like it's lyrics all over the place.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Because also this is again this is before we had internet. Yeah,
- 29:42Speaker 8: and that's how we would learn songs. So like in
- 29:45Speaker 8: learning in that we would like realize that a lot
- 29:47Speaker 8: of these songs are like one four five, so like
- 29:49Speaker 8: very easy, you know.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Just open chords.
- 29:51Speaker 8: That it was, you know, that's how we actually learned
- 29:54Speaker 8: how to songwrite, is like from our childhood of listening
- 29:58Speaker 8: to things.
- 29:58Speaker 4: And learning things by ear. Oh yeah, but.
- 30:01Speaker 8: Just that process of like hearing a song on the
- 30:03Speaker 8: radio and then being able to play it myself was
- 30:06Speaker 8: such an empowering feeling. It was so cool, so like
- 30:09Speaker 8: even though yes, we thought we were weird, in the
- 30:12Speaker 8: long run was extremely beautiful.
- 30:15Speaker 5: And what was the aspiration for the family band?
- 30:19Speaker 4: There was no outfit. It was zero asperts. Was it serious?
- 30:22Speaker 4: Like it was it like they were serious in practicing.
- 30:26Speaker 8: My parents were very They would always tell us like,
- 30:30Speaker 8: if you want to do this, you have to practice.
- 30:32Speaker 4: There is no bands.
- 30:34Speaker 6: But also they were very you know, the whole point
- 30:37Speaker 6: was to play for charity, charity, so we would probably
- 30:41Speaker 6: book you know, I think it was four gigs a year, yeah,
- 30:44Speaker 6: for different charities, and then we would go and perform.
- 30:48Speaker 4: But it was very much like, all right, we're going
- 30:49Speaker 4: to book these, but if.
- 30:51Speaker 10: We're going to book them, we're going to practice, yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 10: and then I mean families go camping.
- 30:59Speaker 8: Yeah, we play music. We play music, but again, like
- 31:02Speaker 8: I don't my parents always like hey when I say this,
- 31:05Speaker 8: like early days high and when I was like very young,
- 31:08Speaker 8: like we.
- 31:08Speaker 4: We were not great. Like it's not like we were
- 31:10Speaker 4: like killing it. We were so like.
- 31:15Speaker 8: Yeah, just as like a wide And also thank you
- 31:19Speaker 8: to anyone that ever saw us play like it was
- 31:22Speaker 8: you know, it was not we thought that it was cute.
- 31:24Speaker 4: It was probably adorable. It was so cute.
- 31:27Speaker 6: And it's also funny, like my parents never have written
- 31:30Speaker 6: they're not song writers. They don't they've never written the
- 31:34Speaker 6: song before, but they were once we kind of were
- 31:37Speaker 6: like maybe we should write on there.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Very supportive, but it's not like they even knew. No,
- 31:43Speaker 4: they don't. We played straight covers, you know, and being
- 31:46Speaker 4: a cover band, I mean.
- 31:48Speaker 8: Yeah, it was fun. It was so fun. But yeah, no,
- 31:52Speaker 8: there was no like let's write a song together. My
- 31:54Speaker 8: parents had no you know, they didn't know.
- 31:57Speaker 1: They were like, we're going to college. They're like, good grades,
- 32:00Speaker 1: you're going to college.
- 32:01Speaker 8: Me and the other like you're getting a job because
- 32:03Speaker 8: me and Danielle couldn't get into college, so as he's
- 32:05Speaker 8: a smart one.
- 32:06Speaker 4: I got I got out and I graduate. I did
- 32:10Speaker 4: you did? That's so great? Yeah, older sister doing it.
- 32:14Speaker 3: How how does your birth position, like I don't know
- 32:18Speaker 3: if you've guys seen like studies on like the oldest
- 32:22Speaker 3: child usually has these traits or does these things?
- 32:25Speaker 4: Middle child for the fish child.
- 32:27Speaker 8: Yeah, by the birth I'm it's hilarious that you've brought
- 32:30Speaker 8: this up because I recently have just been so obsessed
- 32:33Speaker 8: with birth order.
- 32:34Speaker 4: But I bought this book called the birth Order Book.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Wait tell me, I don't know.
- 32:38Speaker 9: Well, the funniest thing, I mean, it's like the same
- 32:40Speaker 9: trips like the oldest, like the parents focused mostly on
- 32:44Speaker 9: it because you're the first trial. Oh, they're like the hyperachiever,
- 32:46Speaker 9: like hiperachiever, which honestly checks out, went to college.
- 32:49Speaker 4: They're going and the leader for.
- 32:51Speaker 8: The youngest, it's like they're the comedian, Like they're the
- 32:56Speaker 8: ones that are like trying.
- 32:57Speaker 4: They're like the most rambunctious.
- 32:59Speaker 8: The thing that's the funniest about the middle times scary, No,
- 33:02Speaker 8: but you're very No, you shouldn't be.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Scared because it's honestly hilarious.
- 33:04Speaker 8: But like there's two things that I thought were so funny,
- 33:06Speaker 8: Like when I got to the chapter for middle child,
- 33:08Speaker 8: they were like, there's not like to their stereotype. There's
- 33:12Speaker 8: not much about the middle child that we know someone
- 33:15Speaker 8: has really wanted to study a middle child. But the
- 33:19Speaker 8: thing that I thought found so interesting that Danielle really,
- 33:22Speaker 8: I mean, it changed our lives that she did this.
- 33:23Speaker 8: But they said that the middle child, the first thing
- 33:26Speaker 8: they want to do is leave. They want to leave,
- 33:29Speaker 8: they want to find their people out in the world.
- 33:32Speaker 8: Like I feel like oldest and youngest they stay and
- 33:35Speaker 8: notoriously middle children leave. And that's very true to Danielle.
- 33:40Speaker 8: Like when she was nineteen, immediately went on tour, started
- 33:44Speaker 8: becoming a touring with for other bands, and it was
- 33:47Speaker 8: kind of like this thing where she came home and
- 33:49Speaker 8: had all this no I'm speaking for you, I'm sorry,
- 33:52Speaker 8: but she came home and had all this knowledge of
- 33:55Speaker 8: just touring. Like we thought that touring was out of
- 33:58Speaker 8: our reach, like we, I mean, we always wanted to
- 34:00Speaker 8: be touring musicians, but like it's like, how do you
- 34:02Speaker 8: do that?
- 34:02Speaker 4: We didn't know, And Danielle kind of fell into this
- 34:05Speaker 4: group that was touring and it was really lucky. She
- 34:09Speaker 4: really lucky and would come home be like this is
- 34:11Speaker 4: what this is?
- 34:12Speaker 8: And like there's this there's something called an agent, an agent,
- 34:15Speaker 8: like this is what and she just came back and
- 34:17Speaker 8: it was without her being the middle child and leaving,
- 34:20Speaker 8: we would not be here today the explorer.
- 34:22Speaker 4: That's so cool.
- 34:23Speaker 3: So did what kind of questions did you ask her
- 34:25Speaker 3: when she came home? Like did you feel like she
- 34:28Speaker 3: had changed at all?
- 34:30Speaker 4: I mean, if anything, it was just she saw the world.
- 34:33Speaker 4: I mean, Didn'telle went he went to London. I went
- 34:36Speaker 4: to Japan. I went to Japan. I'm like, oh my god,
- 34:39Speaker 4: what is Japan?
- 34:40Speaker 1: Like?
- 34:40Speaker 8: It was so exciting, Like she went to London for
- 34:43Speaker 8: the flight time.
- 34:43Speaker 6: London was huge because you know we were also such
- 34:47Speaker 6: you know, we were in high school from basically two thousand.
- 34:51Speaker 6: Well I started high school in two two thousand and
- 34:54Speaker 6: then Alana graduated in twenty ten.
- 34:56Speaker 4: So basically that era of music.
- 34:59Speaker 6: For us was such a soundtrack, our soundtrack, and a
- 35:02Speaker 6: lot of it came out of the UK.
- 35:04Speaker 10: Or if it wasn't from being made by UK us,
- 35:07Speaker 10: it was and artists that were embraced first in the UK,
- 35:12Speaker 10: and then you know American artists that were embraced first
- 35:14Speaker 10: in the UK like the White Stripes, which I can't
- 35:17Speaker 10: believe it, but that ended up being ar trajectory, which
- 35:20Speaker 10: like honestly, and when it was happening, we were just
- 35:22Speaker 10: so in disbelief because we knew that that was like
- 35:25Speaker 10: a trend, you know, Kings of Leon too, I think,
- 35:28Speaker 10: like a trend that the UK kind of is so
- 35:32Speaker 10: you know, forward thinking and yeah, so many American rock fans.
- 35:38Speaker 6: So yeah, when I went with Julian Cosablancas to like
- 35:42Speaker 6: London for the first time, and I had read up
- 35:46Speaker 6: all about like you know, they signed a rough trade,
- 35:48Speaker 6: like there was just so much war about the UK
- 35:51Speaker 6: and the music scene, an Enemy magazine, you know, like
- 35:54Speaker 6: all these like you know, going there for the first
- 35:57Speaker 6: time I think it was in two thousand and nine
- 35:59Speaker 6: with him, I like did.
- 36:02Speaker 4: All the things.
- 36:02Speaker 6: I also like went to Top Top I got them.
- 36:07Speaker 11: From you know, I was like up with me on
- 36:10Speaker 11: like clothes, you know, we were just just thee and
- 36:16Speaker 11: I was like, yeah, like nineteen twenty and I was
- 36:19Speaker 11: just like so so happy and could not believe my
- 36:23Speaker 11: luck that I was doing what I always dreamed of doing.
- 36:28Speaker 4: Like just like that when I would come home and
- 36:30Speaker 4: I'd be.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Like, oh my god, You'll never guess it was like
- 36:32Speaker 6: backstage at like a festival, like yeah, Bostonbury, Yeah, who
- 36:39Speaker 6: was I meeting? It was like a lot of like
- 36:41Speaker 6: I think the Kings of Leon were backstage at some
- 36:44Speaker 6: of our shows.
- 36:45Speaker 1: You know.
- 36:46Speaker 6: I would just say like hi, and then I would
- 36:48Speaker 6: but like so starstruck and yeah.
- 36:51Speaker 8: Y'all going to Glastonbury for like before, I mean way
- 36:54Speaker 8: before we had even gone as high and was like
- 36:56Speaker 8: the biggest ye crazy, were like what is it like
- 37:00Speaker 8: like it was very much like water World. It's like
- 37:03Speaker 8: I felt, yeah, how then really it's there And she
- 37:08Speaker 8: would come home and I think that was like a
- 37:10Speaker 8: huge starting point for us as a band, because Danielle
- 37:12Speaker 8: came back and she was like, I think we can
- 37:14Speaker 8: do this, and that was like the first and actually
- 37:17Speaker 8: we always wanted him to be a serious thing obviously,
- 37:20Speaker 8: but we needed her to come home.
- 37:23Speaker 4: I just learned so much with her and also just
- 37:26Speaker 4: and I also toured.
- 37:27Speaker 6: With Jenny Lewis before the Julian Cosablancas band, and I
- 37:31Speaker 6: just learned just so much about artistry and focusing on
- 37:38Speaker 6: every aspect and just like truly, you know, Julian was
- 37:44Speaker 6: so hyper focused on his vision and I just didn't
- 37:49Speaker 6: know that that's what it took to be an artist.
- 37:51Speaker 6: And I learned so much from him, like he was
- 37:55Speaker 6: very very focused on certain things.
- 37:57Speaker 4: And also Jenna let up the Strokes were so seems
- 38:00Speaker 4: so effortless, like it.
- 38:01Speaker 6: Seemed like they really Yeah, it seemed like it was like, oh, yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 6: they just like waltz into the studio like drunk at
- 38:07Speaker 6: three am.
- 38:08Speaker 4: And record it is this it?
- 38:12Speaker 6: And then you know, started to understand how it took
- 38:17Speaker 6: them years to perfect their sound. By talking to Julian,
- 38:21Speaker 6: I was like, oh, that's why we can't get our
- 38:24Speaker 6: ship right in the studio, like we have no fucking idea.
- 38:27Speaker 6: But yeah, it was we would not be sitting here
- 38:29Speaker 6: without those experiences.
- 38:31Speaker 4: And I'm boring to Jenny and to Julian.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Yeah, Tory, yeah, I love that you talk about the
- 38:37Speaker 3: hard work, because it does. It seems effortless with you
- 38:39Speaker 3: guys too. And you also you always seem like you're
- 38:41Speaker 3: having so much fun and you may seem real.
- 38:46Speaker 4: I mean that is true.
- 38:47Speaker 3: We are good time, yeah, but it seems easy too
- 38:50Speaker 3: at the same time, but I know there's so much
- 38:52Speaker 3: hard work behind the scenes and so much vision and
- 38:55Speaker 3: you've been doing it for so long.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 38:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I know it. Just having our ten year anniversary
- 39:04Speaker 8: for Days Are Gone was very wild experience because it
- 39:09Speaker 8: still feels like that album happened yesterday.
- 39:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:12Speaker 6: I think we feel like there's so much more to
- 39:14Speaker 6: come to and we're, you know, we are very ready
- 39:18Speaker 6: to keep working hard and to.
- 39:20Speaker 8: Keep Yeah, this still feels like even on our fourth album,
- 39:22Speaker 8: it still feels like the beginning.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Yeah, we're like the opener mentality.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Yeah, cannot get rid of it, cannot shake it.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be back with more from him and Leah Rose.
- 39:34Speaker 2: After the break, when.
- 39:40Speaker 3: You were talking about your parents and back when you
- 39:43Speaker 3: were in the family band, just thinking about the album
- 39:46Speaker 3: and all the talk about relationships and being single or
- 39:50Speaker 3: experiences in relationships, I was curious how the mythology of
- 39:57Speaker 3: your parents' relationship, like how that has affected you all individually,
- 40:03Speaker 3: Like maybe, I mean it.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Is a lot of honestly, it's a lot of pressure.
- 40:07Speaker 8: I mean you also have to like think about the
- 40:09Speaker 8: time that my parents got together.
- 40:11Speaker 4: My parents are still together. They love each other so much.
- 40:14Speaker 8: Like it's honestly the sweetest thing like even when we're
- 40:17Speaker 8: on tour and like my mom stays home to work
- 40:19Speaker 8: and my dad sometimes visits us on tour.
- 40:22Speaker 4: He'll be like, I need to call my wife. I'm
- 40:24Speaker 4: like that goodest thing that was in my life. That's
- 40:28Speaker 4: really right? Grow is that for you?
- 40:30Speaker 8: Like?
- 40:30Speaker 4: Is that either mew at.
- 40:32Speaker 8: The thirty three year old trying to find my perfect
- 40:35Speaker 8: human like like my because my parents.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Look they're not they're perfect for each other.
- 40:42Speaker 8: That's so beautiful about it, is like, look, we're all flawed,
- 40:45Speaker 8: we're all human. But like they had found their missing
- 40:48Speaker 8: puzzle piece and they found it and in crazy circumstances,
- 40:53Speaker 8: I mean, they were put together by friends.
- 40:55Speaker 4: It ended up.
- 40:56Speaker 8: Being you know, it's like the dream scenario, like I
- 41:00Speaker 8: have a guy for you. The amount of times a
- 41:01Speaker 8: friend is said, I have a guy for you. Let
- 41:02Speaker 8: me tell you no, not find my missing puzzle piece
- 41:05Speaker 8: here and.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Your hopes get up every time, it's like, oh, like
- 41:08Speaker 3: a little I mean, and.
- 41:09Speaker 8: It goes back to a lyric in relationships where it's, uh,
- 41:13Speaker 8: is it just the ship our parents did? Like the
- 41:15Speaker 8: thing like my parents again, it's like you grow up
- 41:19Speaker 8: being this these puzzle pieces fall in love.
- 41:21Speaker 4: And then you.
- 41:22Speaker 8: You you are now in the age of Okay, now
- 41:24Speaker 8: it's time for me to find my miss missing puzzle piece.
- 41:26Speaker 4: And it's not easy.
- 41:29Speaker 6: But it's also like beautiful that like they work their
- 41:32Speaker 6: at like their butts off when we were kids to
- 41:35Speaker 6: provide for us too, and so it's also just like yeah, it's.
- 41:38Speaker 8: Really they have just as much fun at him concerts
- 41:41Speaker 8: as you do. I mean, the thing is is like
- 41:44Speaker 8: I'm so extremely grateful that we had parents that were supportive,
- 41:48Speaker 8: but it is finding finding your missing puzzle piece in
- 41:52Speaker 8: this life is hard. We learned that we thought it
- 41:56Speaker 8: was easy. We're like, oh, we grew up like you
- 41:58Speaker 8: find your person, no hard and it takes a lot
- 42:01Speaker 8: of work, which we also realize as well. But I
- 42:05Speaker 8: think in relationship, when that's.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Happened to your point, I think some day sometimes you
- 42:12Speaker 1: wonder like why do I do this? Like why I
- 42:16Speaker 1: know it worked for mom and dad, but like at
- 42:20Speaker 1: the same time, why do we put ourselves through the ship.
- 42:23Speaker 1: And I think that's also kind of you know, the
- 42:26Speaker 1: sentiment and how we were feeling when we were making
- 42:29Speaker 1: relationships was like, yes, it can be a magical, beautiful thing,
- 42:32Speaker 1: but also like this fucking sucks, not easy, but yeah,
- 42:39Speaker 1: we it's a lot to live up to with with
- 42:40Speaker 1: our mom and dad because they really well they just
- 42:44Speaker 1: ride each other, you know, they really ride for each
- 42:47Speaker 1: other and that's you know, it's really a beautiful thing
- 42:51Speaker 1: to see and God willing.
- 42:56Speaker 5: They listen to your inner like all your everything.
- 42:59Speaker 8: Really they find every I don't know how what Like,
- 43:03Speaker 8: I'm like, I didn't even know they know they knew
- 43:04Speaker 8: how to use a computer.
- 43:06Speaker 4: I literally like it's news.
- 43:07Speaker 5: But well, I think are just hi, Mom and John,
- 43:10Speaker 5: I'm so supportive.
- 43:12Speaker 1: I just think that No, I think that they're honestly
- 43:13Speaker 1: just really stoked that like all three of us.
- 43:17Speaker 4: Are doing something together. Yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 8: I think there was a time when Danyell went on
- 43:21Speaker 8: tour and they were like, uh oh, you're like, what's
- 43:23Speaker 8: gonna happen to Like what's coming back? She's not coming down?
- 43:27Speaker 8: What has seen for us?
- 43:28Speaker 4: And what are they gonna do? They need her?
- 43:32Speaker 8: So I think there it's nice they think. I think
- 43:34Speaker 8: they also always know where we are.
- 43:36Speaker 1: At any point, and then we're gonna take care of
- 43:39Speaker 1: each other and then we look for each other.
- 43:43Speaker 4: So sweet, that is so so sweet.
- 43:47Speaker 3: When you guys put out a new album, or when
- 43:49Speaker 3: you record a new album, how deep do they get
- 43:51Speaker 3: into listening to it? Like are they Yeah, it's so funny,
- 43:58Speaker 3: Like they saw our show the other week and we
- 44:02Speaker 3: were playing like new songs and like that that I've
- 44:04Speaker 3: never heard of.
- 44:05Speaker 4: We don't show.
- 44:06Speaker 8: No, we should send them the album, though they they
- 44:09Speaker 8: in the day that they don't need to hear it.
- 44:12Speaker 4: I also just what I need. I needed. I don't
- 44:14Speaker 4: want to explain some of the songs to them because yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 4: it's kind of.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Ye the song take Me Back, So on that song,
- 44:28Speaker 3: you're reminiscing about old friends, past lovers, past experiences in life.
- 44:36Speaker 3: I'm curious for each of you, what's the time in
- 44:38Speaker 3: your life that you reminisce about most high school?
- 44:42Speaker 4: I think it is high school.
- 44:43Speaker 6: And that was something that really was happening during COVID,
- 44:47Speaker 6: at least for me, I was like really like reflective
- 44:50Speaker 6: about my high school experience.
- 44:53Speaker 8: Well, also, I think it's because it's the first time
- 44:55Speaker 8: that I think we were one becoming adults. And when
- 44:59Speaker 8: Stie was a senior, Danielle was a freshman, and when
- 45:02Speaker 8: senior I was a freshman, and we all went to
- 45:05Speaker 8: school together at one point, and it was like the
- 45:08Speaker 8: f when s he was a senior in Dnill was
- 45:10Speaker 8: a freshman. That was right when you know, we were
- 45:13Speaker 8: introduced to the east side, the echo, the smell, like
- 45:17Speaker 8: all these uh venues and venues. And luckily my parents,
- 45:21Speaker 8: I mean, it's a terrible rule. They should have never
- 45:24Speaker 8: let us do this. But if we were together, we
- 45:27Speaker 8: didn't have a curfew. But if we were, we had
- 45:30Speaker 8: a curve.
- 45:31Speaker 4: Feel well, they also knew that I would keep you
- 45:32Speaker 4: in line.
- 45:33Speaker 8: He was also like an incredible like sister, like older sister.
- 45:37Speaker 8: Wo honestly would never let it was almost annoying, would
- 45:40Speaker 8: never let us trouble.
- 45:41Speaker 4: I was.
- 45:42Speaker 8: I mean, again the littlest child. All I want to
- 45:44Speaker 8: do is get into trouble. As he didn't let me
- 45:45Speaker 8: do anything.
- 45:46Speaker 4: It was right.
- 45:47Speaker 6: It was like a couple like those Those years were
- 45:49Speaker 6: super formative.
- 45:51Speaker 8: For us, as you got got her first car for
- 45:54Speaker 8: ninety five Honda Passport.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Yeah, and we went to a public all arts high school,
- 46:02Speaker 6: oh nice called Lochsa La County High School for the Arts,
- 46:05Speaker 6: and it was just such an amazing place to learn
- 46:10Speaker 6: and and.
- 46:12Speaker 1: And then but then upon reflection, I think when we
- 46:15Speaker 1: were writing the song, we were like wait.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Did that happen? Yeah? We were like, there weren't a
- 46:21Speaker 4: lot of rules.
- 46:23Speaker 6: This at our high school was on a college campus
- 46:25Speaker 6: and kids from all over LA.
- 46:27Speaker 4: If you got in, you know, you got free art education. Yeah.
- 46:31Speaker 6: So it was really incredible and met our best friends there,
- 46:35Speaker 6: but also simultaneously, like a lot of crazy fit in
- 46:40Speaker 6: Sue not yeah are kids without Rules?
- 46:44Speaker 4: A lot of the names in that song are changed
- 46:46Speaker 4: all up.
- 46:47Speaker 8: I was curious, not Molly, there is that did actually happen?
- 46:51Speaker 8: I was going to ask you that, Yeah, may Molly
- 46:54Speaker 8: in quotations ticket ship in the back of a check
- 46:57Speaker 8: that actually have Yeah, there was a an at our
- 47:01Speaker 8: schools ticket ship in the back of the check.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Yeah, what what what are you gonna do?
- 47:05Speaker 8: But it was that day in the studio specifically, I
- 47:08Speaker 8: think was so funny because it was us at Rossiam
- 47:11Speaker 8: studio and our friend Tobias just so Junior was also
- 47:13Speaker 8: in the studio. He comes in sometimes just like, you know,
- 47:17Speaker 8: see what's going on, And since he grew up in Canada,
- 47:20Speaker 8: I think we were both reminiscing, like what was going.
- 47:23Speaker 4: On in Canada? And he's like, well, what was going
- 47:24Speaker 4: on in La And we were.
- 47:25Speaker 8: Just spewing these crazy stories and we were like, how
- 47:29Speaker 8: do we fit this into a song, And I think
- 47:32Speaker 8: we achieved it.
- 47:32Speaker 4: I mean, that's one of.
- 47:33Speaker 8: My favorite album and it really that song in particular,
- 47:36Speaker 8: it was really like a healing, an inner child's moment,
- 47:41Speaker 8: I think for us, and especially the end of that
- 47:44Speaker 8: song is very special. Just naming all the streets that
- 47:46Speaker 8: we used to drive down, smoking smoking cigarettes in SC's
- 47:51Speaker 8: car and trying to make sure that our parents can't
- 47:53Speaker 8: smell it were not easy.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Yeah, loves a beenie and a lot of secret spread
- 48:01Speaker 1: body like for sure our parents knew they were.
- 48:06Speaker 4: We like all walked in smelling like bed bath and
- 48:08Speaker 4: beyond or whatever. Yeah yeah yeah, or goat and bodyworks,
- 48:13Speaker 4: body works, right, but yeah, send a sallad time.
- 48:17Speaker 8: But it was honestly the time where I think all
- 48:18Speaker 8: three of us as sisters, like finally we're in that
- 48:22Speaker 8: sweet spot zone where like we went from being like
- 48:25Speaker 8: children to like, oh now we're like we can hang
- 48:29Speaker 8: out and like.
- 48:30Speaker 4: It's like, is Alana going to be cool? Yeah? We
- 48:32Speaker 4: bring you around people. Were you guys cool? Were you
- 48:34Speaker 4: guys cool? Were you guys? Probably race? This got me
- 48:38Speaker 4: my first bake ID.
- 48:39Speaker 8: But The problem was I had braces, so like sorry,
- 48:42Speaker 8: and I also now looking.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Back, looked like a baby. Like io my idea.
- 48:47Speaker 8: They had found this idea on the floor and it
- 48:49Speaker 8: said that I was like twenty eight when I was
- 48:50Speaker 8: like fourteen, Like there was I.
- 48:52Speaker 5: Remember trying to like memorize the name in the app dress.
- 48:55Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, and I see it would be like shut
- 48:57Speaker 8: your mouth, don't open your mouth, you break your good
- 49:01Speaker 8: in and I mean it worked. There were some very
- 49:04Speaker 8: nice bouncers that let me in and we worked the
- 49:07Speaker 8: second night.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I turned twenty one. Like the amountains like nineteenth birthday
- 49:13Speaker 4: at a bar.
- 49:14Speaker 8: Yeah, and honestly, the like the only people that showed
- 49:17Speaker 8: up were my siblings. I don't know what I was
- 49:18Speaker 8: thinking because not fake ideas. So it was a little
- 49:24Speaker 8: bit like my nineteenth birthday was at a bar.
- 49:27Speaker 4: So cool it was. It was very cool, but high
- 49:30Speaker 4: to reminisce about those times.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Yes, okay, I have to ask you before we have
- 49:34Speaker 3: to go, I have to ask you about two more.
- 49:38Speaker 3: I want to ask about farm. I love farm so much.
- 49:42Speaker 3: How did that come about? That was all so real?
- 49:45Speaker 4: Is it real?
- 49:46Speaker 5: Is it a true story?
- 49:47Speaker 4: Okay?
- 49:48Speaker 8: But that song specifically on the album was the song
- 49:51Speaker 8: that was happening in real time. We wrote it as
- 49:54Speaker 8: things were happening. Actually in real time. Danielle had moved
- 49:58Speaker 8: in with me, and I think you can kind of
- 50:02Speaker 8: feel how current it was while we were writing it,
- 50:07Speaker 8: like it was very much like a song that was
- 50:09Speaker 8: for that moment. And I think that song is a
- 50:11Speaker 8: very important part of the album just in the sense of, like, yes,
- 50:16Speaker 8: like our whole ethos of this album is we were
- 50:18Speaker 8: all single making the album. We were all having a
- 50:21Speaker 8: good time individually and also together, and it was this
- 50:24Speaker 8: fun like going out meeting people. And I think the
- 50:27Speaker 8: Farm is that moment of the album where you're human
- 50:30Speaker 8: and reflect it and you are reflecting on things and
- 50:33Speaker 8: you're alone in the house and you're realizing, you know,
- 50:39Speaker 8: that moment of all these emotions rushing over you and
- 50:42Speaker 8: I feel like, I'm thank you for bringing up the Farm.
- 50:46Speaker 8: It was all that one was a very emotional song
- 50:48Speaker 8: just in general to record.
- 50:50Speaker 4: I love it so good. Where are you all at now?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Do you feel like you've moved on and you're in
- 50:55Speaker 3: a different place or is everyone still in the same
- 50:58Speaker 3: place where you're like fuck everything, I quit? You know, like,
- 51:01Speaker 3: are you that same energy.
- 51:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I quit as a like ing your power energy.
- 51:11Speaker 8: Okay, so we are not looking at I quit as
- 51:14Speaker 8: like a negative thing. I think honestly maybe this album
- 51:17Speaker 8: with Super that's why I.
- 51:19Speaker 4: Have a big smile on my face and yeah, I'm
- 51:22Speaker 4: happy about it.
- 51:23Speaker 8: No, it was like this realization that quitting is actually
- 51:28Speaker 8: not a negative thing. You're betting on yourself and it
- 51:30Speaker 8: is fitting that you're starting. So I quit is for
- 51:34Speaker 8: all everyone that's trying to, you know, get their power
- 51:38Speaker 8: and having an uninhibited summer and going out and raging.
- 51:44Speaker 4: But yeah, it's that. It's really funny.
- 51:46Speaker 8: The other day, I like picked up Women in Music
- 51:49Speaker 8: Part three, and this is how I know that, Like
- 51:51Speaker 8: I've moved into a new chapters that like I was like,
- 51:53Speaker 8: oh I pitched them, and I was like, this isn't
- 51:56Speaker 8: where I am anymore. I quit is like we're in
- 51:59Speaker 8: this I quit era. And I mean I love all
- 52:03Speaker 8: of our albums. There is not one album that's another
- 52:06Speaker 8: thing that I will say that is very comforting just
- 52:08Speaker 8: for me just to like put a blanket of like
- 52:11Speaker 8: how controlling me and my siblings are.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Like there is not one song on any of our
- 52:16Speaker 4: albums that we.
- 52:16Speaker 8: Didn't love and it's so nice to pick up your
- 52:20Speaker 8: albums and feel like they're completely you and no one
- 52:24Speaker 8: had any sort of like you should do this song
- 52:27Speaker 8: or this song or you should put this album.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Like we were extremely very much.
- 52:33Speaker 8: Everything had to feel right, and it's it's nice cause
- 52:36Speaker 8: I'm sure there are probably some moments for other people
- 52:39Speaker 8: where they're like, I wish I didn't put that song
- 52:41Speaker 8: on this album, Like that is not a sentiment that
- 52:43Speaker 8: we have album.
- 52:44Speaker 4: So it's very exciting.
- 52:46Speaker 8: This new album, this new era feels exactly where I
- 52:51Speaker 8: want to be, which is really nice. Like now we
- 52:53Speaker 8: can kind of put our album reins to rest, and
- 52:56Speaker 8: our touring brains have now woken up and dealing with
- 52:59Speaker 8: you know, what is our stage gonna look like? What's
- 53:01Speaker 8: yeah road? Like that's the fun fun. Him is now
- 53:06Speaker 8: coming back is nice. Horning him gets a little crazy,
- 53:09Speaker 8: you know, we get touring him, we're out, We're doing it.
- 53:12Speaker 4: It's happening, So we're really excited. Well, thank you ladies
- 53:15Speaker 4: so much. I appreciate you.
