- 0:02Our number 2 welcome back Miller and Condon Iowa sports radio
- 0:06network Trent Condon, Ken Miller until 2 off the bench come Sean
- 0:10and Lucas. They take you until 5 overtime
- 0:12Iowa 5 until 6. Centurion Stone sponsors our
- 0:16buddy David Kaplan each and every Wednesday talking Chicago
- 0:20sports at this time and he joins us Cap Trenton Ken, first of
- 0:23all, before we get into the Bears and the Cubs, Congrats.
- 0:27A really good read. Barrett Media did a very nice,
- 0:30nice piece on you. What you mean to Chicago sports
- 0:33and and what Chicago sports mean to you when it comes to doing
- 0:36what you do on a daily basis. That was a good piece, Capra.
- 0:39Congrats. I really appreciate it.
- 0:42Yeah, I had. I got this call from John Rock
- 0:46Mamola, who's been on the radio beat for a long, long time as a
- 0:50program director and now as a columnist for Barrett Sports
- 0:53Media. He's like, hey, brother, you're
- 0:55going to be 10 years at ESPN and 30 plus in Chicago media.
- 0:59Would you do an interview with us?
- 1:01Of course, had no level of expectation.
- 1:04And then my wife saw the article while I was on the air.
- 1:07She's texting me. This article is great.
- 1:10You've got to see this. And so I went to break and then
- 1:13I read it and I was like, wow, very blessed.
- 1:15Very, very blessed. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 1:18It's a really good read. So I guess let's start with the
- 1:20bears. We'll get to the Cubs.
- 1:22They fought last night on the West Coast.
- 1:24We'll get to that in a second. Just the the bears and cap from
- 1:28the your listeners from, you know, some of the stuff that you
- 1:31talked to some of the former bears that you have on your
- 1:33YouTube channel. Was there a cut that surprised
- 1:37people more than the others? That of the to get down to the
- 1:4053. Was there someone that nobody
- 1:42saw coming? Cap.
- 1:45I don't think there was somebody that no one saw coming.
- 1:49Maybe we thought Ian Wheeler had a chance to stick and maybe he
- 1:53will be on the practice. Squad.
- 1:54We'll see. Zach Pickens deserves to be cut.
- 1:58Tyler Scott got beat out by John A.
- 2:00Walker from Texas. A&M and so I don't think those
- 2:04cuts or those guys making it surprised any of us.
- 2:08I. Think what maybe surprised me is
- 2:11that they are not willing to name a starter at left tackle.
- 2:15I mean, I don't know what we're waiting for, unless the starting
- 2:20left tackle for the majority of the season, let's call it, maybe
- 2:23not the Minnesota game, but for the bulk of the season, if he's
- 2:27not currently, maybe he's not currently on the roster.
- 2:30Interesting. That's where I was going to go.
- 2:32Is that left tackle position? And you know, as good as we
- 2:34anticipate the interior of that line, that still has to be a
- 2:37pretty major issue. It feels like they've been
- 2:39looking for somebody else other than Braxton Jones.
- 2:40He got right on the other side. Who for a first rounder, I guess
- 2:44maybe a tad of a disappointment at this point in his career.
- 2:47So when you say that and say not there, are you looking at trade
- 2:51candidates, what will be looking at?
- 2:52Because I don't guess there's a free agent out there right now
- 2:55that would likely be able to come in and be a tackle starter,
- 2:58right? No, there's nobody.
- 3:01Anybody that has a decent left tackle, they're keeping them.
- 3:03The only name, so to speak, that might be available is Cam
- 3:09Robinson, who signed a $12 million deal one year with the
- 3:14Texans after he left the Jaguars.
- 3:16He was an All American at Alabama back in the day.
- 3:19I think he's 2930 and Cam Robinson lost his gig to the Kid
- 3:26Ursery, who played at Minnesota and was Big 10 offensive lineman
- 3:29of the year, and he is a pure left tackle.
- 3:33I don't know why the Bears did not draft him.
- 3:36Think he went 46 or 48. The Bears had the 42nd pick and
- 3:42they traded it. Maybe to get an extra force.
- 3:46Well if you needed a. He's won the job as a rookie in
- 3:49Houston. That's not like he won the job
- 3:51with the Saints who are going nowhere.
- 3:53He won the job for the Houston Texans who have aspirations of
- 3:57making a playoff run. So if that dude was truly
- 4:00available, then I don't understand why the Chicago
- 4:04Bears, you can take him. The only possible reason, Albert
- 4:09Breer, we had on yesterday on our show, who I think is the
- 4:12best football insider in the industry, Albert said character
- 4:17concerns and that's why he was on the do not draft board of
- 4:20some teams. If that's the case, then the
- 4:23Bears are going to say no thank you because of character.
- 4:26OK, I will tell you at some point you cannot have 53 choir
- 4:32boys. You just can't it.
- 4:34Is a mean, tough sport played by guys with evil intent.
- 4:40When they when a guy comes around the edge, he's trying to
- 4:43stack the quarterback. He's not trying to get there and
- 4:45hand him a Christmas card and go here you go, Merry Christmas.
- 4:48He's trying to kick your you know what?
- 4:51So they didn't take him. I don't know what they're going
- 4:54to do it left tackle. If it's not Braxton Jones, Theo
- 4:56Benedette, is that the guy ready to start?
- 4:58Not sure about that. Cam Robbins is the guy that the
- 5:00Vikings picked up after Darasaw got hurt, right?
- 5:03Yeah, I thought so. Yeah, that's correct.
- 5:04Yeah. Same guy.
- 5:06SO Cap, I guess where are the the media is all over seemingly
- 5:11you're you're part of it in Chicago.
- 5:13Where's everybody on Caleb Williams?
- 5:15It's still depends on how on who you listen to.
- 5:19Depends on who sees it with their own two eyes.
- 5:21There's conflicting reports on Caleb Williams and what they
- 5:24expect out of him in year #2. Yeah, look, the national
- 5:32narrative is much different than the local narrative nationally.
- 5:37You know, you got Ryan Clark on the air yesterday saying he
- 5:42could be the next Anthony Richardson or get the Anthony
- 5:46Richardson treatment where he loses his gig and they bring in
- 5:49a veteran to take his job. That's one of the dumbest takes
- 5:54I've heard in a long, long time. If he loses his job, then Tyson
- 6:01of agent AI believe would be the starter.
- 6:03B. He's not losing his job.
- 6:05Ben Johnson just signed a $65 million deal.
- 6:09He could have gone to Washington a year ago.
- 6:11He had the Bears, he had the Jags, he had the Raiders all
- 6:15begging to sign him. He could have gone anywhere he
- 6:19wanted in the league. And if he made it known that he
- 6:21was wide open, there would have been teams willing to fire their
- 6:24coach to hire him. He picked the Bears because he
- 6:27wants to coach Caleb Williams. Is there going to be growing
- 6:31pains? Are there going to be growing
- 6:32pains? 100% because this is, let's see,
- 6:36he had to learn the Lincoln Riley system and then he had to
- 6:39learn the Luke Jesse system coming out and then they gave
- 6:47him that playbook and then he's Luke gets he's gone.
- 6:50He's not going to come back. So Shane Waldron, you're going
- 6:52to learn Shane Waldron system and then Shane Waldron is gone 9
- 6:56games in. You're going to learn Thomas
- 6:58Brown system and they're going to tweak it like it was all
- 7:01chaos around him and he still threw for 3637 hundred yards.
- 7:06So I fully believe Caleb's the guy.
- 7:09I think there's going to be some growing pains, but I do think
- 7:11he's the guy. So Jaquan Brisker set out a
- 7:16cryptic post after Tyson Baigent got his extension.
- 7:19Brisker was lost after another concussion a year ago in Week 5.
- 7:23He wants a contract extension. Are we?
- 7:26Is there something bubbling under the surface here?
- 7:28I mean, from the Bears perspective, the guys had so
- 7:30many concussions, you can understand why they're not
- 7:32giving him an extension. Yeah, I think that they want to
- 7:37see him get through the season healthy.
- 7:40And if that's the case and they do get through the season
- 7:44healthy, then yeah, maybe we'll put an extension on the table.
- 7:50Absolutely. There could be talk of that.
- 7:52But you make a great point. He's had multiple concussions,
- 7:58multiple issues there. We will find out what happens at
- 8:03the end of the year. If you tell me we're in, you
- 8:05know, Week 12, Week 13, Week 14. The Bears are rolling along to
- 8:10the playoffs and Briskers playing at a Pro Bowl level.
- 8:13Yeah, maybe there's a chance then that they will do that for
- 8:16him. But right now, absolutely not.
- 8:19Cap, I think the usually get involved in this market win
- 8:22totals at least you have in the past when it comes to the Bears,
- 8:24I think it's 8 1/2. Is that accurate trend for
- 8:27Chicago 8 1/2 this year? Where where are you on that
- 8:30number? Cap, do you like either way?
- 8:33I think I would bet the over, but I do think it's a very fair
- 8:37number. I really do.
- 8:39That is not a guarantee that they're going under and it's not
- 8:43a guarantee they're going over. I think it's a very fair number.
- 8:47You said it was 7 1/2. I'd be all in on the over again.
- 8:52I bet the over at 8 1/2. I bet it.
- 8:55Do I feel like, Oh, my God, no, because I don't know how the
- 8:59whole season is going to unfold with a brand new head coach,
- 9:01with another new offense, but they have a lot of talent.
- 9:05Olin Cruz put out a tweet yesterday.
- 9:07And for all of your great listeners, if you don't follow
- 9:09Olin Cruz on Twitter at Olin Cruz, you're missing out.
- 9:13His tweet yesterday said as the discussion was going on about
- 9:18who's the left tackle, Braxton Jones, Theo Benedett, he said.
- 9:22Let's see. You have.
- 9:24The number one, the first round pick at right tackle, darn all
- 9:28right, went 10. You have a $14 million right
- 9:31guard, a $14 million center, a 17 and a half, $1,000,000 left
- 9:35guard who's been first team all pro the last two years and was
- 9:39the Chiefs MVP in 2024. You also have a 27 and a half
- 9:43million dollar wide receiver, a first round wide receiver.
- 9:46You have the number one overall pick at quarterback, a first
- 9:50round tight end, and another tight end making 12 million.
- 9:53Yeah, it's the fault of the guy making 900, Grant, if this
- 9:56offense doesn't work, that's nonsense.
- 9:59And then he's talking about Braxton Jones.
- 10:01So that's where we're at with this team.
- 10:05They better figure this out. That's a great tweet.
- 10:08Cap we a year ago April, we talked a lot about Tori Taylor
- 10:12with you. He had a tremendous rookie
- 10:15season, 47.7 yards per punt and from the buzz, he's even better.
- 10:20The guy was a wizard at Iowa. It's crazy to think that a guy
- 10:24can be that important to a team. But wheel Assad in Iowa, the
- 10:28field position, the importance coffin corner, putting guys
- 10:31inside the five. Tori Taylor is a big weapon.
- 10:34Has it been much talk? I mean, I know you guys aren't
- 10:36in Iowa, so you don't talk punters like we do over here.
- 10:39Has there been much? Tori talk thing is winning.
- 10:40Yes, that's right, during August.
- 10:44There has been some talk. There's still people here that
- 10:49are mad that the Bears, the 4th rump, got a punter when the next
- 10:52pick was Bucky Irving and now they're scouring the waiver wire
- 10:56looking for a running back. It was like Bucky Irving's a
- 10:59stud. Why'd you take a punter?
- 11:01I like the punter pick at the time.
- 11:04I still do because as he acclimates himself to the NFL,
- 11:08and it's not an easy thing, could go from Australia to Iowa
- 11:14to the NFL with the climate that you get at Soldier Field, I
- 11:19think he's going to become a massive weapon.
- 11:20This guy's leg is incredibly strong.
- 11:23But yeah, you still have the same.
- 11:25It's a punter. What are you doing drafting A
- 11:28punter? So that's where it's at around
- 11:30here, so. Change his field position.
- 11:31No doubt about it, Cap. Let's get the baseball.
- 11:34Cubs fall last night. Brewers aren't playing as well
- 11:36as they worry. I mean they were on an
- 11:38unbelievable stork streak of wind to start the month of
- 11:42August. Cubs got it to within 5, falling
- 11:45back after last night. Disappointing loss last night
- 11:48after they came back and took the lead cap.
- 11:51Yeah, they, they just couldn't get enough big hits in big
- 11:55spots. And then Matt Boyd's, while he
- 11:57had good stuff, Matthew Boyd elevated a couple fastballs and
- 12:02they got whacked out of the ballpark, one of them A2 run
- 12:04shot that put the game out of reach by Matt Chapman.
- 12:08And so as I looked at that game and I'm, you know, up late
- 12:13waiting to do my recap and I'm watching the offense, they just
- 12:18they had some opportunities. They just didn't get enough big
- 12:21hits in big spots. First inning, would they have
- 12:23two men on and they take a strike three.
- 12:26Now the strike was definitely outside the box.
- 12:31You got to come up with a hit in that spot.
- 12:33You just do. And so they didn't dare.
- 12:36There was another inning that had traffic, didn't come through
- 12:39there. And so you had these
- 12:42opportunities to add on and you didn't get it done.
- 12:46Yeah, six guys in scoring position.
- 12:48They were two for six, eight overall left on base.
- 12:51Yeah, not good. Cap as we look more big picture
- 12:54with this team and look towards the future because they're going
- 12:56to be a playoff team. Phillies lose Zach Wheeler, the
- 13:00Dodgers last year, they rolled a cobble cobble it together with
- 13:03their bullpen. That bullpen hasn't been nearly
- 13:05as good this year. The Padres are trying to figure
- 13:07out what they're doing with their rotation is the National
- 13:10League. There's top level teams and
- 13:11they're all really good. But could you make a case that
- 13:14this thing might be a little bit more open and open for a team
- 13:17like the Cubs got to get hot? Obviously that's a part of it
- 13:20that this maybe is a little bit more open though in the NL. 100%
- 13:24it's open when the Phillies lose their ace pitcher, when the
- 13:28Dodgers are trying to cobble together they're pitching
- 13:31rotation. And you know, I know Blake
- 13:35Snells back and I know glass Snails back.
- 13:37Those guys are one throw away after having dealt with
- 13:40significant injuries. Kershaw is 40 years old.
- 13:44Yeah, you can absolutely make a run.
- 13:46But just like the Cubs can make a run, so can the Brewers.
- 13:50So can the Mets. I mean, there's teams that are
- 13:53salivating for a chance to get to the post season.
- 13:57Yeah, no doubt about it, cap Kate Horton is now the favorite
- 14:01to win the Rookie of the Year in the National League.
- 14:03What a remarkable story he's continues to write.
- 14:07Yeah, I remember when he got drafted, me and my, you know,
- 14:11big mouth. I go on Twitter and I said, oh,
- 14:13great, we're back. We got a guy with a 484 ERA in
- 14:16college. And then I started watching him
- 14:20throw one day at spring training.
- 14:23I'm like, that guy's got pretty good stuff.
- 14:25Wow. And now I watch him here and I'm
- 14:27like, yeah, that tweet will make me really look smart.
- 14:30And he is a great kid. He is an outstanding pitcher.
- 14:35And I thought the Cubs deserve a lot of credit how they have
- 14:38handled him and gotten him to this point because he's never
- 14:42thrown this many innings. And you're going to need them in
- 14:44October. Yeah, no doubt.
- 14:46There's been a lot of ink spilled about Kyle Tucker and
- 14:48his struggles. Maybe a couple days off helped.
- 14:50It certainly look like a little bit initially.
- 14:54Are people sleeping on say a Suzuki though?
- 14:55I mean, talk about a power drop for him.
- 14:58It's been pretty significant. Also much like we saw with
- 15:00Tucker concerns and how concerned should we be with
- 15:03Suzuki where it looked like maybe he could point to some
- 15:05reasons for Tucker? What are the reasons for Suzuki
- 15:08struggles? He looks terrible, he really
- 15:11does. But you know, somebody ought to
- 15:13tell the $8 million manager that it's OK to bench him for a
- 15:17couple days and say, you know what, it worked for Kyle.
- 15:20Kyle looks better. We're going to stitch you a
- 15:22couple of days. Saya and Owen, you're going to
- 15:25play because why is Owen Casey here and all you're going to do
- 15:28is let him pinch it with two outs in the night, down 3 and no
- 15:30one on it makes no sense to me. Like there's something to be
- 15:34gleaned from being on a big league airplane and being around
- 15:38those guys and in the club house and travel and all that.
- 15:42But enough is enough. Either play him or send him back
- 15:45to the Drake Diner and let him hit them at that.
- 15:48You know, not a lot last thing for me, Kappa, but and back to
- 15:50Kyle Tucker, because you said, I believe you said throughout the
- 15:53summer you thought that they would resign him.
- 15:55Do you still believe that Cap, that the Tucker will be a cub
- 15:58next year? I do.
- 16:00I just don't think it's going to be as expensive as anybody
- 16:03thought it was going to be. That that's where I'm, I'm at
- 16:05with that. I do not believe that he's going
- 16:08to get anywhere near 500 million unless you tell me.
- 16:12Oh my God, the month of September, he hit fifteen home
- 16:15runs, carries the Cubs, you know, to the NLCS and I don't
- 16:19think that's going to be the case.
- 16:21He's a really good player and if the money is reasonable, I would
- 16:25sign him. If someone's going to give him
- 16:26five hundred $600 million, good luck.
- 16:29I'm moving on and playing O in case in right field.
- 16:32But if I can get him to take, let's say he said, I'll do a
- 16:36three-year deal with you, but I want a high AAV 3 for 1/20.
- 16:41Do it. Yeah, for sure.
- 16:43Last thing, Miguel Amaya seemingly dodged a bullet here,
- 16:46Cap. What's the latest on him?
- 16:47What did they expect him back? Probably a couple weeks because
- 16:51he's dealing with the sprain ankle.
- 16:53Yep. But it could be quicker.
- 16:56I mean, he says he's feeling better and then we've already
- 16:58seen him at the ballpark, so we will see where this goes, but
- 17:01they need him back as well. Yeah, Maurice McGuire, nice
- 17:03Grand Slam the other day though. Good for him.
- 17:06Great stuff, Capra, as always, buddy.
- 17:07Thank you. We will talk to you Wednesday
- 17:09night. See you pal.

- 18:05Stephen M Sipple from On Three Media will join.
- 18:08Trent and I will preview tomorrow night and talk about
- 18:10the Huskers outlook for the upcoming Big 10 season.
- 18:14We're underway. We're well underway on the Iowa
- 18:16Sports Radio Network. It's time for SIP.
- 18:24Stephen M Simple talks with myself and Ken on Nebraska
- 18:27football. I mean, I have a radio show.
- 18:29We have callers, I pay. Attention to my Twitter
- 18:31notifications and all that. There's definitely some
- 18:34frustration. We talk Cornhuskers, and you
- 18:37never know what else is going to come up with 30 years on the
- 18:44Nebraska beat. Here's Steven M Simple.
- 18:46As long as they're paying me to talk, I'm just going to keep
- 18:48doing it. I'm Millie Kong, just about 1:30
- 18:52on a Wednesday. Yeah, I was Sports radio
- 18:55network, wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa.
- 18:57Grateful that you are. Well, tomorrow night, 8 O clock,
- 19:01Arrowhead Stadium, Cincinnati, the Bearcats, Nebraska, the
- 19:06Huskers probably, I don't know, 8020 as far as what how the fan
- 19:12base will kind of sort itself out.
- 19:14Sip Good to talk to you, buddy. It's got that kind of what
- 19:17you're hearing. Sip as far as obviously Husker
- 19:20fans are going to take over the stadium. 1 would assume what
- 19:23what's the breakdown? Have you heard like 8020?
- 19:25Is that somewhat accurate? 8020 what?
- 19:30What are you talking about? In terms of fans.
- 19:32Fans No. No.
- 19:34There ain't going to be 8020. That's what I said.
- 19:36I think 95.5. I talked to a guy.
- 19:38There's a guy MO Agar, maybe you heard.
- 19:41Of them, yeah, I have. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:44There's a radio show He's Like You in Cincinnati, and he said
- 19:49he knows nobody. He's going to the game.
- 19:53He's literally, I've talked to him twice in the last week.
- 19:56He was on our show in Lincoln and he said, he said last week,
- 20:00he said I literally know nobody from Cincinnati going to the
- 20:04game. And I talked to him yesterday
- 20:05again, he goes, hey, still I don't, I still have not run into
- 20:09anybody who's going, no, it's not going to be 80.
- 20:11It ain't going to be 8020, Kenny.
- 20:14It's not 9 to 1 is what we're talking about.
- 20:16How did the game come together? Was this a was this a Cincinnati
- 20:20home? Yeah.
- 20:20How did this when this series was first announced?
- 20:23So this matchup was first announced.
- 20:24Was this always going to be a neutral neutral site?
- 20:27A sip, do you know? I believe it was always going to
- 20:30be a dual site in Indianapolis. Was the original, was the
- 20:34original, was the original. But the Keys owners stepped in
- 20:42and said, wait a second. I think that they doubled what
- 20:46they're what it's a Cincinnati home game.
- 20:50Cincinnati gets gets, you know, the pot or most of it.
- 20:54And the chief ownership stepped in and said, we'll, we'll, we'll
- 20:58double what you're offered in Indianapolis because they wanted
- 21:02a college game. So that's why it went to
- 21:05Arrowhead. And the Cincinnati's glad to do.
- 21:07It's odd because they, you know, they're that'd be close to
- 21:11Indianapolis, but you were probably looking at half the
- 21:16stadium being pulled and they weren't filled.
- 21:19And I don't think they would. They got to think about NIL like
- 21:23everybody else. And that's what this, I'm sure
- 21:26that's what this money is about. I mean, got paid players.
- 21:31So yeah, they had to take, you know, they basically had to take
- 21:35it. So that's what the deal is.
- 21:36Now they're going to play again. I believe the year is 2033
- 21:40issues. Yeah, they'll play again, 2033.
- 21:44Return trip. All right, Cincinnati, no
- 21:48Huskers are favored, but it's not significant.
- 21:51It's less than a touchdown out there.
- 21:52Brendan Soarsby comes back at quarterback.
- 21:54They got a tremendous defensive tackle and Corleone, the
- 21:56godfather on the other side. What does concern you the most
- 22:00with this Bearcats team? Because, well, this isn't like
- 22:02what we have in Iowa City facing off against Albany IN week
- 22:05number. Oh, what concern?
- 22:09I mean, the big talk here and I say here in Nebraska is
- 22:14Nebraska, the concern is defensive line.
- 22:19That's you know, Nebraska lost. I'm going to say 4 guys they
- 22:23lost Ty Robinson. That's the name people by
- 22:27recognize over there. He was a big defensive tackle,
- 22:30got drafted in the fourth run. He wore a single digit, correct?
- 22:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he wore 9.
- 22:36And then Nash Uplocker was good starter.
- 22:40Jamari Butler transferred to LSU and then they had a guy, a kind
- 22:45of a stand up backer, Jack linebacker MJ Sherman, who's a
- 22:48big, big, not huge backer, but good against the run.
- 22:52Lost all those guys. And now you just wonder, you
- 22:56know, you wonder how they're going to hold off up front that
- 23:00that they're asking some young guys to be good before their
- 23:04time. I mean, when I say that I'm not
- 23:07going to give a seminar here, but Ty Robinson really wasn't a
- 23:12major factor until a senior year, right?
- 23:15Junior year, senior year. Then sick isn't a sixth year.
- 23:20Last year, you know, one of those guys, Nash, wasn't a fat
- 23:24Nash, not a factor there as a sophomore.
- 23:28Sue here wasn't really a factor, not a major factor.
- 23:33So late the sophomore season, if I remember right, and now you're
- 23:38asking these guys, he's like Kiona Davis, sophomore, Riley
- 23:42Van Popple, sophomore, Williams Winery, big time transfer from
- 23:47Missouri, red shirt freshman. You're asking those guys, you
- 23:50got to be good now. You're going to have to hold up
- 23:53now. And it's a lot to ask, frankly.
- 23:56I saw that the black shirts were handed out after they gave up
- 24:00seventy. Shouldn't they retired the black
- 24:02shirts? What's that say that again?
- 24:07Just the, the black shirts, the black shirt, that was the thing
- 24:09that I think of of back in the day.
- 24:11The black shirts. What does it mean to me?
- 24:14Because it that's a different era.
- 24:16That's a different, what I think of the black shirts because
- 24:19Nebraska, though they've been better defensively the last
- 24:20couple of years. I don't think of what I used to
- 24:22think of the black shirts. What does it mean, though?
- 24:24The Husker football in the black shirts and and even today, even
- 24:27though that defense isn't what it once was.
- 24:30Well, there's always hope. I mean, first of all, you know,
- 24:33that might be. Pretty good this year.
- 24:35And it's a tradition that in traditions, you just don't turn
- 24:39your back on, you know, it's that's a staple, that's a staple
- 24:45Nebraska tradition trend. And I mean, it's you just don't,
- 24:51it just doesn't go away. You just don't you keep that
- 24:54one. And I've never really heard it
- 24:56disgusted would ever go away. It's still something that was,
- 25:02it began here in the 60s. It's, you know, it's critical.
- 25:08It's critical to this place. It's the Black shirts, the only
- 25:12defense in the country that really has a name.
- 25:14Yeah, they've fallen off. But what if they get good again?
- 25:18Then you bring it back. No, you just keep it.
- 25:20That's the way I look at it. SIP What kind of weapons have
- 25:25Nebraska found for Dylan Rayola this year?
- 25:27Have they got, I know there's a Kentucky transfers, another
- 25:30transfer. I can't think of where he's
- 25:31from, but they went to the portal, got a couple of kids to
- 25:34catch the ball. What kind of targets will Rayola
- 25:37have this year around him? The two best receivers,
- 25:40transfers, you mentioned Dane Key, he's our number one guy.
- 25:45He's a he's I, I must say, 3/2/10 three-year starter
- 25:50Kentucky or or very or let's say this very productive for three
- 25:55years at product at Kentucky. He's #1 #2 is Isaiah Hunter,
- 26:01their second best receiver. Isaiah Hunter's from Cal got 40
- 26:05hauls at Cal last year. He's he, he was banged up in
- 26:09camp a little bit came out of it and he's, he's defined the
- 26:13number 2. So yeah, they're his top 2
- 26:15targets are transferred. And I, you know, I saw an open
- 26:19practice. They let they let the media
- 26:23watch one practice in its entirety and he was out that
- 26:29day. Minor injury.
- 26:31He spies back. Hunter is a blazer.
- 26:36I mean, he can really run and I'm excited to watch him.
- 26:39He's a deep threat guy. And not just that, though I
- 26:44don't want to portray him as that, but he I could see him
- 26:48catching. I also could see him catching A6
- 26:50yard pass, spinning out of a tackle and just out running
- 26:52everybody, that type of guy. Speaking of upfront that you
- 26:57talked about there at the top sip, I want to get your
- 26:59perspective on Williams. Don't worry who comes in.
- 27:02He was a five star coming out of high school, goes to Missouri
- 27:04last year and barely played. He's a red shirt, only played in
- 27:08four games. So what have you heard about
- 27:11him, his impact because coming out of high school, everybody a
- 27:14was surprised he went to Missouri and secondly said that
- 27:16this kid was that he was going to hit right away.
- 27:20What have you heard out of his camp?
- 27:22Well, here's what Here's the deal with that Trent.
- 27:25I think he just he didn't have much of A spring here.
- 27:29He was here in the spring and just what there wasn't much to
- 27:34say, you know, just didn't kind of a blah, not much to say then.
- 27:42I mean, I said that all offseason.
- 27:44I said whenever he's got to come ready in August and have an
- 27:47August and and and dig in and he did.
- 27:51He not that he listened to me, but I'm not implying that at
- 27:57all. In fact, that'd be really
- 27:59ridiculous. But the he did have an August
- 28:02and he's number one on the depth chart now.
- 28:04Now, what's that look like? You'll it'll it'll mainly
- 28:08manifest itself in pass rush situations, but he's good enough
- 28:12against the run that they put him #1 on the depth chart.
- 28:15So when Nary dies, I mean, just one of those guys that went off
- 28:22the bus, I mean, first, first, he's 656-6255.
- 28:29Kenny, looks like you're old enough to remember Randy
- 28:31Gregory. Oh yeah, he looks, he looks like
- 28:34a bigger Randy Gregory. Now think about that for a
- 28:38second. Now, I don't know that he'll
- 28:41play like Randy Gregory. Randy Gregory was was a special,
- 28:46special player. I don't know that you'll get
- 28:48that if you do. Well, I look at the team
- 28:52different. Yeah, if if he's like Gregory,
- 28:54I'll look at this. I'll look at the defense
- 28:56differently. Yeah, Gregory cost himself
- 28:58millions in the NFL, right, Dallas?
- 29:00And then if I think he finished in Denver, but he had his
- 29:02demons, if memory serves. You know he had demons.
- 29:06Yeah, back to the Missouri transfer.
- 29:09That's the kid. Apparently they spent more money
- 29:11on him in the portal than anyone else.
- 29:13Zip. Is that right?
- 29:13Is that accurate? Let me think about it.
- 29:18Would be he or Pritchett the left tackle?
- 29:21Elijah Pritchett, they they brought in a tackle from
- 29:25Alabama, so you can imagine the price.
- 29:28That's right there. Yeah.
- 29:30So it's one of those guys when Airy big time five star high
- 29:35school Missouri transfer edge rusher, those are those guys
- 29:40cost a lot of money. So it's one of those. 2.
- 29:43Except we're going to talk to you weekly and I'm, I'm not
- 29:46going to, you know, gloss over kind of him the acronym and
- 29:49Houston Christian games. But once we get to the big 10 on
- 29:51the 20th of September, I'm sure you've seen Underwood's quote
- 29:54that the the college football has never seen a freshman like
- 29:58me, which is certainly ballsy to say because there's obviously
- 30:01been some good ones that have come before him.
- 30:04Underwood, that'll be his first Big 10 game, and he'll do so in
- 30:09Lincoln. I'm sure that comment didn't get
- 30:11past too many people. And again, it's a it's a ways
- 30:13away. But what do you make of that
- 30:15comment sip by the Michigan quarterback?
- 30:18Underwood saying he's the best freshman to ever play college
- 30:21football, essentially. Well, I drive as youthful
- 30:24indiscretion, but it doesn't I, I kind of appreciate the
- 30:30confidence. I, I hope he's confident.
- 30:33You've got to be confident that position without being
- 30:36unreasonable about it. I don't I don't regard that as
- 30:40unreasonable. I don't think it's unreasonably
- 30:43the kid and he's probably pretty good now.
- 30:45He'll he'll find out the world's pretty tough in this league and
- 30:50he's got maybe he's already he's skinny.
- 30:53Could be already taking that into account.
- 30:56I hope he is because it's rough. As you know, it's this league is
- 31:00God Dang. I'll tell you what I'm pissed
- 31:02off with people in Iowa right now.
- 31:04OK, I watched that game. Iowa State and Kansas State, if
- 31:08those are the two best teams in the Big 12 or two of them the
- 31:12Big 10's miles ahead of the Big 12.
- 31:14I mean, that's I mean, they're they're fine teams, but Ben,
- 31:20those are the favorites to win the Big 12.
- 31:24I mean, that's not Oregon you're watching out there or.
- 31:27Penn State or no? No, that's not.
- 31:30That's a fall. That's another Ohio State's in a
- 31:33different realm than those. Parodies is the order of the
- 31:37season in the Big 12. But your, your, your statement's
- 31:40not unfair. It's not.
- 31:41Cap one, one final thing, Sip. You're going to be doing your
- 31:46football stuff, right? You're going to be tweeting and
- 31:47you're going to be writing columns.
- 31:48You're going to do the interviews after the game and
- 31:50all that, but you have one thing that you got to figure out where
- 31:53is Taylor and Travis going to be sitting because he's a
- 31:56Cincinnati alum? I mean, they they got to be
- 31:58there. It's in Arrowhead.
- 32:00They're going to be in the building.
- 32:01Sip. Are you going to find yourself
- 32:02into their booth? I wish I could.
- 32:06Do you know they're going to be in the building?
- 32:07I don't know for sure. I I got to think he.
- 32:09Hasn't returned my call yet, so I'm just waiting.
- 32:13I don't. Yeah, I got.
- 32:14Yeah, I think. I bet he is.
- 32:17I mean, the reason I I react that way, I think you're
- 32:20probably right. I got to think that that they
- 32:23just got engaged. They're probably.
- 32:25I hadn't. Heard blissful stage where they
- 32:29don't want to be without each other, which is a stage I can't
- 32:32even imagine at this point but I but I I don't I would think
- 32:42you're probably right and I'm not gonna speak them out I'm not
- 32:46it's a. Missed opportunity, gonna get
- 32:48those clicks so. I'm like I gotta.
- 32:50Write about like football, you know, I don't think what, what,
- 32:54what would I do if I came upon? I don't think.
- 32:56So, yeah, I'm with you. I bet he's there.
- 33:00I bet he'll be there. I doubt she's there.
- 33:03Yeah, I doubt she's there. Well, sip, if she is a tracker
- 33:06down, give us a give her our best for Miller and Condon.
- 33:10We we love doing this with you, pal.
- 33:11We'll talk to you next week. I have fun when you go to Kansas
- 33:14City after your radio show tomorrow.
- 33:17Yeah, you. Understand.
- 33:20Yeah. Do a show from 6 to 9 here.
- 33:22Yep. And then we're leaving it.
- 33:24Then we're leaving at 10. And back in the middle of the
- 33:27night sometime. We're going to stay.
- 33:31We're staying over. Yeah, we're going to stay over
- 33:33and come back on Friday. Don't blame you, be a late game.
- 33:36Good stuff after you're all coverage and everything's filed.
- 33:38Good stuff. Simple talk to you next week.
- 33:40Thanks for doing this, appreciate it.
- 33:42Kenny and Trent, you're the best.
- 33:44See you later. Good to talk to you, Steve and
- 33:45him. Simple.
- 33:48He's a funny dude. Get a kick out of him, yeah?
- 33:51He's great, he really is. We'll take your time out.
- 33:55Trent's plays of the day are next.
- 33:57Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:00Hi Miller and Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:04Our final segment here on a Wednesday.
- 34:07Plenty of college football tomorrow.
- 34:08So Thursday's begin. Football, right for the
- 34:11foreseeable future because NFL kicks off the following week and
- 34:16then it's Thursday Night Football.
- 34:18It'll end, and I mean some college football on Thursday,
- 34:21but they've kind of got out of the way, made a bigger deal out
- 34:24of Fridays. But right or wrong, wrong, I
- 34:27agree. I don't disagree, by the way,
- 34:29Speaking of high school football, and we were in a
- 34:31roundabout way, Joe Stacy's going to join us tomorrow.
- 34:35He will anchor along with Nathan Fischer, football Friday nights
- 34:38here on KX&O. You'll give us an outlook,
- 34:42Trent. You'll be obviously a big part
- 34:43of that conversation in your own right as you'll be out every
- 34:46Friday night doing games, play by play for I Heart here, Des
- 34:49Moines. You'll be on the FM dial on the
- 34:53bull, which I'm going to get it right one of these years.
- 34:54It's 96.9, You got it. How about that?
- 34:57Nailed it 96.9. Took a half decade?
- 35:00Really. That's where you'll do your
- 35:03game. How many?
- 35:03How far ahead have you worked? I mean, obviously you got Week 1
- 35:06Valley Dowling. How far on the schedule are you?
- 35:09Are you just going to flex, kind of fly by the sea of your pants?
- 35:12Who's ever hot? Yeah, I mean, it's tentative.
- 35:14I have 9 weeks scheduled right now.
- 35:16Ankeny at Waukee Week 2 going over to Iowa City.
- 35:19A City High will play host to Northwest Waukee in week 3.
- 35:23Valley Waukee Walk four week 4. Ames, Roosevelt Week 5.
- 35:26So we kind of have a mapped out. We'll hit pretty much all the
- 35:28suburban schools and then take you through the playoffs, all
- 35:31the way through the Dome and the semifinals in the championship
- 35:33game. Will you be?
- 35:34At Mediacom Stadium when it gets cold in the heated press box,
- 35:38yes. Well done, Yeah, Aims at
- 35:40Roosevelt Big 5. Well done.
- 35:41Look at ahead. Well.
- 35:42It could be a little colder. I might have to slip back a
- 35:44little bit on the schedule any of the city school quote City
- 35:47Schools going to be. Or else it'll be OK.
- 35:50Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:52N, you know, had that little spurt a couple years ago,
- 35:53finally ended the long losing streak, but it's just such a
- 35:57difficult hill to climb. Yeah.
- 35:59I know, I know, it's, it's unfortunate, but maybe Lincoln?
- 36:03Did any of the merge? Did Hoover merge with somebody?
- 36:05Did that ever get done? Don't think so.
- 36:08I don't know either. I'm not sure either.
- 36:10Well, we'll talk high school football tomorrow with Joe
- 36:12Stacey. He'll preview what he and his
- 36:14team are going to do and what time they're going to take the
- 36:17air, how long they're going to stay on the air on Friday
- 36:19nights. And you'll get underway All all
- 36:21the games now are 7, right? Yes, 7:00 here in Central I
- 36:25that's at least the big schools have done, yes.
- 36:27That's the way it should be. I remember who was the 1st to do
- 36:29was E maybe the 1st to go 7:00 I think they were.
- 36:33And then, 'cause everybody was 730 back in the day when I was
- 36:37in the anchor chair and I was always grateful for Easton was
- 36:40hoping that everybody else would follow suit.
- 36:42And they got there. They did.
- 36:43They did get there. All right.
- 36:45You got there with the tennis play yesterday.
- 36:47That's not about that's about maybe about it.
- 36:49What have you got going tonight as far as betting your plays?
- 36:52Sponsored by Circa Sport. Yeah, I got a four pack of
- 36:55losers for you. We go.
- 36:56We're going to go to the US Open again.
- 37:00Let's try it again. Going to go with Francis Tiafo.
- 37:02We're going to lay 5 1/2 games in his match up against Martin
- 37:05Dam. Junior laying -121 in that one.
- 37:08Tiafo -5 1/2 games. What time does he play?
- 37:12This afternoon, he's in the afternoon. 3IN baseball, which
- 37:15has been dreadful lately. The Mariners.
- 37:17I'm going to lay the -145 I'm not a believer in you, Darvish.
- 37:20I'm going to do the same with the Cubs tonight.
- 37:22Colin Ray, who's been solid. And then I'm going to take a
- 37:25shot. Give me Ladolo against Shohei
- 37:27Otani tonight. And the Dodgers big number
- 37:31there, plus 170 with the red in that matchup.
- 37:34They need it after. The Reds have to win.
- 37:36Got to get it done and one baseball.
- 37:38Mets are winning. Yes, they are 1 baseball.
- 37:41Note Max Freed has no hitter going right now.
- 37:43Does he? And the team has hit six home
- 37:45runs in the game. Yeah, they're up 11.
- 37:48Nothing. Yanks have hit six home runs.
- 37:51So if it continues and you get to the 7th, do you keep Max
- 37:53freed in there? Got you to pause.
- 38:00Yeah, well, there's, there's no poem.
- 38:05I think so. I think I don't know anything
- 38:07about Max Freed. Would he understand?
- 38:09Who knows? It's not the big picture,
- 38:11though. You got to look out for that.
- 38:12We'll see you tomorrow. Coming up next, they're coming
- 38:14off the bench. Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts.
- 38:16They'll take you until 5. Miller and Condon are here every
- 38:19Monday through Friday with you, noon to two to talk sports with
- 38:22you. Thanks for being with us on the
- 38:24Iowa Sports Radio Network.
