- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: This is episode 1136, how to beat Mondays, revisited as always on Fridays.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_02]: We pull a great show out of the past, this is from 2021, and Mason is interviewing Mike Chambers about, I believe it was a TV show, how to beat Mondays and they did the craziest weekend adventures.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_02]: Squeezing in adventures all over the world from the end of work on Friday evening until you show up at work on Monday morning.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_02]: I did a lot of weekend warrior adventures over the years.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: People often ask me, how did you find time for all the adventurous stuff?
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: And often it was just that.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_02]: It was, take advantage of those weekends.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_02]: And it's worth it because you have life experiences.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: And I think of them as kind of like markers in my memory.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_02]: You know, if you stay with the everyday or the common weekend thing, then a week later, you don't remember what you did.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: But if you go out and you have a life experience,
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: that it makes a memory that helps to mark the passage of time, but I also think of such memories as treasures that I collect in a treasure chest.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: Things that I can reflect on and say, wow, that was an amazing experience.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_02]: I learned all these things, weakened warriors, how to beat Mondays.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: That's what this episode is all about.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_02]: I also wanted to mention something that happened with the show this last week.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_02]: We had a huge spike in downloads and it lasted for several days and it continues on now.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure who did what, but somebody out there let somebody else out there know about the Adventure Sports podcast and it created a beautiful spike in our downloads.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: So if this is one of your first times to hear the show, I'm going to say welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast family.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: perhaps you know who it was that shared the Adventure Sports podcast on some platform somewhere that just had a massive impact.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: I thank you so much for that.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much and if uh if you'd like to let me know who you are and what you did you can reach me at info at AdventureSportspodcast.com so that was fun to see.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_02]: It always is when these spikes happen in the
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: It says great, someone out there is sharing and it makes a world a difference for our podcast.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_02]: So thanks and happy Friday.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_02]: I hope you're coming weekend.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be filled with wonderful adventures.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_02]: And now here's Mason.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I just have this kind of come to the realization that if I'm ever gonna get to experience all these things, I need to create a framework in terms of how I approach my life.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_03]: Hey folks, welcome to the Adventures Sports podcast.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_03]: I'm your host, Mason Gravely.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_03]: Today we're talking to Mike Chambers from Beat Monday.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_03]: He has been a long requested guest.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_03]: I remember somebody asking about getting Mike on a show like a few years ago, and so I'm sorry.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_03]: It took this long, but...
- 3:43[SPEAKER_03]: Um, just saw the opportunity was able to connect with Mike and said, hey, we've got to get you on the show because what Mike does.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: It's so cool.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_03]: He and his adventure partner Jason fit amazing adventures into true weekends.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_03]: And a true weekend being literally after 5 p.m. on Friday all the way until 9 a.m. on Monday morning.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_03]: They can fit in some incredible stuff in those what 64 hours Literally international trips climbing bucket list mountains like Mount Rainier Mount Whitney You know like I said going international climbing some of the biggest mountains in South America
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: All in a weekend where they can literally close the laptop into call at 5 p.m. on Friday Get all the travel done all the driving whatever it takes Do the adventure and get back home for meetings on on Monday now Monday's not gonna be pretty because they're gonna be pretty tired But think of the answer you have when someone says hey, what'd you do this weekend?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_03]: So so Mike show Mike Mike and Jason have a show called
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: Beat Monday on outside TV.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_03]: That's free online.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_03]: You can check it out.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_03]: You can you can look it up on YouTube as well But they've got about 12 episodes another season coming out and yeah Watch them all learn from it and really start thinking about what you can do in a true weekend It's pretty amazing and also right at the end Mike talks about a rapid fire questions, you know We this episode just so you know is from my other show without compromise
- 5:13[SPEAKER_03]: And my answer is about five or six rapid fire questions over on that episode.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: So if you want to hear those answers, we end right before we jump into those rapid fire questions.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_03]: So go over on to without compromise to hear those again, that podcast is called without compromise.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's brought to you by athletic brewing who I work for.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I hope this inspires you to beat whatever your Monday is.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_03]: All right, let's jump in.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_03]: I want to go back kind of where are you grew up and what you were doing.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_03]: Where are you always kind of an adventurous person?
- 5:55[SPEAKER_03]: Where did this start for you?
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thanks Mason.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first off, thanks so much for having me.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think my folks were pretty adventurous people for the most part.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: Not to the extreme that I think I've taken it.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I grew up in New England.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: My dad was working the fishing industry.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: My mom was a dentist.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: We spent our summers out on the water or on the beach surfing and and our winners up in New Hampshire Vermont skiing is much as possible my folks actually met in the 70s and snake river Idaho on a ski trip so they they sort of.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: kind of had the adventure bug and past that on to us, although, you know, by the time they had kids, they're desired to, you know, push the boundaries, I think, was certainly subsiding.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think I've always just, you know, really love the outdoors and love the adventures as a tool for discovering, you know, what I'm capable of and learning more about myself and meeting really interesting people.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: And, and,
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it wasn't really until after I graduated from college that I started to more seriously sort of pursue it as as as an everyday part of my life.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_03]: And I know that came about because of a chance encounter with Jason, do you mind telling the story of where you guys started seeing the potential to fit in a pretty massive adventure in a pretty short amount of time?
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, alright, a lot of people don't know this, but Jason and I went to college together.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: He was a senior when I was a freshman.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I had kind of an interesting, you know, experience going to college in high school.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: I was a football player in the cross player and went to college to play both sports, but had a pretty serious neck injury, um, yeah, that prevented me from playing any contact sports.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: So I kind of went into college, uh, a little listless, like, you know, I had sports as sort of that anchor for me for a long time.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but naturally just sort of found my home with
- 7:56[SPEAKER_01]: We hung out a little bit in school, but it really was after school after college that our friendship and partnership and you know doors really started to blossom.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: Jason had been doing a lot of climbing, I've been doing a lot of ultra running and mountaineering and we kind of linked up, started linking up for adventures together and that's sort of kicked everything off.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: We were fortunate to do a lot of really fun things together in the time that we were both living on the East Coast, but Jason moved out to Colorado, you know, shortly after and life took on its own sort of journey for me.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: It was around 2015, 2016, where Jason and I kind of checked in with one another.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we obviously seen each other for over the years, but we checked in and we were like, you know, how's it going?
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: How are you doing?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: We're both working full-time jobs.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: We're both settling into relationships, and just like checked in with each other to see how we were feeling
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: about this life and whether or not we were accomplishing the goals that we had set out as sort of adventures and climbers and runners and I think we both kind of left that conversation feeling like
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: We were sort of falling into this trap of allowing time to be an excuse for why we weren't pursuing our passions.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: At the time, I was launching an organization down in Haiti.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_01]: I was back and forth on an airplane for several years.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Jason was working for a tech startup.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: And we were not living our most adventurous lives.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, really for no reason.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously, we had busy schedules.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: to get a little bit complacent.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: So we said on that phone call, you know, and this is like, you know, this is kind of how it all happened.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: We were like, all right, let's pick a date for a couple of weeks out.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to go climate skier near in a day, me coming from Boston, Jason coming from Denver, and we scheduled the trip, and we were like, all right, like, true weekend because I have meetings on Monday, you know, meetings on Friday, like we really have to
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: So we flew out and we had perfect weather and renewers are both of our first times on that mountain and climbed and skied the entire MNs glacier almost all the way down to the trail ahead and it was just one of those adventures where just everything clicks but it just felt so kind of real and raw and like you know we had no idea what was going to happen going into it we knew that there was a high chance of failure but the you know in the added time component
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: having to make it happen in this, you know, confined time period was really fun and really compelling.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: And we left that trip like we got to do more of these.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: And so that really sort of kickstarted the whole beat Monday project.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: We did another one down in Mexico shortly afterwards on Orazaba.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then, was able to, you know, get some sponsorship for the series and partner up with outside.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: And that's
- 11:09[SPEAKER_03]: you mentioned time constraint being almost this added fun element to it you know we talked to so many people who do adventures that take months or even year sometimes right you know at least weeks um and we and we feel like I can totally relate that it's like well I don't have that right now and I don't know when it will.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_03]: What did it show you what was possible with that Mount Rainier trip and by the way how did it go was it successful?
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: We had an incredible trip.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: We climbed, we summed it in ski, we had perfect skiing conditions all the way down.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: We couldn't have asked for better weather.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was an incredibly memorable trip, I think, for what I did at the time, I think Jason probably the same was, we really just took a step back and analyzed our calendars and analyzed how we were spending our time, and I think
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's really valuable for everyone to do that at some point in their life or at least periodically to just, just like, you know, we all feel busy all the time, there's a million things pulling us in different directions, but when you really take a step back and like look at how you're spending your time, there's all sorts of ways in which you can be more efficient with it.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, you know, beating Monday is not something you want to do all the time, it's exhausting and hard and and you know the time elements fun, but it's also sometimes fun to just go with no time element and just go have fun.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I think for me, it was, it was really being honest with myself when I looked at how I was spending my time over the weekends, you know, I'd be, you know, waking up maybe a little later and sort of mosing around and kind of next thing you know, you know, I maybe go for a run towards the end of the day on Saturday and like kind of go out and then Sunday, I'm just like, you know, maybe mentally preparing myself for the week.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think rest is important and it's important to allow yourself to have those, those, you know, weeks where you just relax.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: But in general, like I think we could all just be a little more.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: If we were all a little more structured with our time, I think we would all move towards our goals a lot more smoothly.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that was kind of the insight that Jason and I gained, you know, from that and from this whole, this whole beat Monday project.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I think,
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: for both Jason and I, it's really blood over into all aspects of our life.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, we still go and do trips that are, you know, a couple weeks long or, you know, from time to time, obviously less more more so now that, you know, our families are growing.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_01]: But in general, like, I think I've really taken this concept of like balance to the extreme and all aspects of my life.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I really, I really try and show up for like, you know, the top three or four things that are most
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: on the course of a week and really make an honest effort with myself to do the best I can.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: And for me, that's my family first, my career, and my passions, and my passions happen to be pushing myself and myself and the outdoors.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: And so I really, really make a concerted effort to really, just try and be as disciplined as possible and make sure that I'm paying attention to all those things.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_03]: I can imagine coming in Monday morning, having done some of those things.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_03]: You feel quite a bit of pride or quite a bit of a sense of accomplishment versus, you know, maybe just kind of letting go of the week and not doing a whole lot.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_03]: What were some of the biggest ways you were maybe either wasting time or not wasting time or just thinking differently that you noticed in your own life or that you noticed in others?
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first off, I will say that Monday mornings are really hard.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: We're not necessarily the most effective that work on Mondays, but you know, that after that first trip, I had a meeting with the
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: the executive director of this big organization that we were partnering with.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: And it was at 930, and I landed in Logan Airport at 880, and I had to basically just get ready in the airport.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I smelled horrible.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, I was so disheveled.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: I took a red eye back from Seattle.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I got into the meeting, and instead of trying to pretend I could pull it off, I was just brutally transparent with him and told him what I did that weekend.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: And he loved it.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you kind of worry about, you know, that your personal life bleeding into professional life and how that might potentially negatively affect it, but in this case, in particular, you thought it was a coolest thing ever.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, to answer your question about, you know, I think we all like have the tendency to like overblurify how busy we truly are.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think once you start to tell yourself that narrative that you're so busy,
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like you become, like you kind of manifest your reality.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like you feel like you're busy all the time, but like when you truly take a step back and look at how you're spending your time, you realize that like, wow, like maybe you could be a little more efficient in like four different areas of your life.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: And that if you did that would free up so much more time to be able to pursue your, keep, some of your passions a part of your life.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think for Jason and I, like, we love,
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: climbing and we love the outdoors and we love pushing ourselves but really the the message that we hope to get across with the Monday really extends beyond just you know the adventure realm it's it's I don't care if you're passions are playing instruments or podcasting or whatever it is
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's really important that, you know, you're doing everything you can, your life, to make sure that you're prioritizing that doesn't mean that it has to be your whole life.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to completely take it to the extreme, like Jason and I have done with the Monday, but you will be a much more well-rounded person and a much happier person if you're truly sort of nourishing that part of your soul.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: And that's really the message that we hope to
- 16:58[SPEAKER_03]: You know, going back to be Monday and the actual adventures you've done, I know that isn't, you know, so much goes into planning these weekends and making sure it fits within this, this 64 hour of time frame.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_03]: You've done, you know, bike rafting, you've done climbing, you've done mountaineering, you've, you've run with donkeys, you've done back there, you've done so much.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_03]: Um, has there been any trip that's really stuck out to you or something that, uh, that was extra special and, and I will say this too.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_03]: You're not a necessarily an expert in, in a lot of these sports.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_03]: You, you are learning these skills literally hours or minutes before you go and do them.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, in some cases, that's the case, that's the truth.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think like Jason and I really pride ourselves on like maintaining a decent level of fitness to be able to kind of off the couch a lot of these things.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: But it's worth mentioning like we suffer hard on these missions.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're because there's such a variety of sports and things we're doing.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to train specifically for an individual one.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: So they all end up being a lot harder.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: What I don't think comes across on cameras, you know, the actual filming takes a lot of time.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: So we may have a run that would take Jason in I-10 hours under normal circumstances, but you have at least 20 to 30% of out of time for filming, you know, to the weekend, which means that time really just eats into our sleep ultimately.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: So we end up really sleep deprived on a lot of these trips.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know,
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: The best adventure or the best beat Monday adventure I think we kind of boil this down a little bit to a science Jason and I and I think there needs to be it needs to be something new and something interesting for Jason and I think we don't really want to kind of go do the same thing over and over again.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_01]: There has to be an element of unknown and a chance of failure I think those two things are are really important it's not an adventure if you know you can go and nail it.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: You need to have some sort of, you know, some sort of chance of things going haywire.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually think it's a lot more interesting when things go wrong than when Jason and I just go and, you know, you know, cruise through a mission.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: So what's interesting is I actually think the best mission that we've ever done.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: is probably probably one that hasn't aired yet.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: We just did it a couple weeks ago.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: There was some failure, some success.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: Lots of adventure, lots of unknown, somepicness, and also some good storytelling.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think one of the things that Jason I really excited about as we continue to evolve the concept is bringing other folks in and helping tell some of their stories.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: In this case, we were down in Mexico, and we were the first,
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: First, you know, folks from outside of this community to go run this new trail that was just built around Orazaba.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: There is this really, there's this incredible couple down in Mexico who has spent the last 10 years creating a trail that circumnavigates Mexico's highest mountain.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_01]: what the goal of increasing tours and down there, and we were able to pull it off despite some really unwelcoming circumstances.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: But I really loved learning about this other person's story and having this added element to it.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, that's not the first time where Mexico, we, we actually went down and, and, and by from Veracruz to the summit of Orazaba back in 2017, and I will say, we didn't film that one unfortunately, but that was definitely the most memorable, uh, memorable adventure that Jason and I had been on, you know, as a pair, um, in the Beat Monday context.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it had just all the elements of, of what we think makes an adventure great.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_03]: Let's take a quick message break in here from the folks that help make this show possible.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_03]: That is plenty of that for now.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get back into the episode.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_03]: I was going to ask what was so special about that that made it stick out to you.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_03]: Do doing something that you've done in other places too, but making it the best.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think what made it the best was we went down there with a very loosely defined plan.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I found some we had an idea we wanted to bite from sea level to the base of Orazaba and then climb Orazaba in a weekend and we had like no idea like what their roads were like or what you know what the conditions were like whether it was safe
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: I managed to find someone on Facebook who could help manage some logistics for us, help us like determine a route and that was the extent of our plan.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: We flew down there with our bikes.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: We assembled our bikes at the hotel that first night and started right from there and
- 22:05[SPEAKER_01]: We had all sorts of things go wrong from massive mechanical issues to some weird run-ins with some folks at one point we were on the side of a road somewhere and we had a bunch of guys on motor bikes come up to us and it was very nerve-wracking.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: We had just a lot, I took a massive spill into a tree that really could have ended badly, but we managed to pull it off.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_01]: We created big scenes and supermarkets,
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: We pushed ourselves, the bike ride was so hard, it was 130 miles with 16,000 feet of climbing.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, all the way up to Peter Grande, which is over 14,000 feet, you know, just kind of had all those elements.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then we, you know, we were able to summit the next morning and it was just the perfect cap to, you know, a really, really fun adventure.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the more elements of unknown, like the more you open the door for real adventure to kind of come in, the better it is.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: And also, like, I love the fact, I really like getting creative with some of these things like, you know, it's fun to go climb them out and or, you know, climb a established route or, you know, run a trail.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: But when you can start to like link to get it sports and different objectives and get creative with the way in which you're, you know, doing these adventures, I think that's where the real magic lives.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: And that's that's how to ensure yourself, you know, a true adventure.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_03]: gosh, that does sound awesome.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_03]: Well, tell us a story, a quick story about maybe something you, you failed successfully, you know, it wasn't, you know, necessarily something that went right, but it's something you look back on.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_03]: It may be made a good story or it's something you cherish now, because, you know, really, that's what real adventure is, is really all the failures along the way.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: Do you have anything that sticks out?
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: One thing I can think of at least, but it wasn't a beat Monday adventure, but it was a mission that Jason and I did.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: Our an adventure that we did to Greenland back in 2016 we we had Jason had you know had his daughter Avery and I was my wife was pregnant with my son Max our first and we wanted to go do this this one this one kind of last trip together You know before my son was born and so we went over to Greenland and and the primary goal was to set the FKT on the Arctic Circle Trail, which is
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: a trail that circumnavigates the, or it doesn't circumnavigates, sorry, it traverses the sort of western part of Greenland from the glacier all the way to the coast.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it's in, we were doing this sort of at the, at the end of winter, it was in March.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: So we successfully, you know, set the FKT on that trail and then after that, the second second mission was to go and ski some unexplored lines kind of in the middle of nowhere outside of this village called Sissumut.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_01]: So we got all of our gear together.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: We took a souped-up Toyota Helix on snow tracks over like two mountain ranges, 50 miles from Sissumut and got dropped off at this old fisherman's hot in the middle and nowhere at the base of these mountains.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we had all the supplies we needed for two weeks.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I was like, I think both Jason and I and we had a film crew with us, like we were all like frothing, you know, we were like, you know, surrounded by all these unexplored mountains and unskeed lines and and just, you know, we were just so excited.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: We got dropped off late in the afternoon and we couldn't help ourselves, but to go and try and try and try and ski a line, so we, you know, we put our skis on started skating up, you know, started skating up this mountain and.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the conditions weren't great.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, it was pretty icy, uh, the snow conditions were really bad actually.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, you know, it's cold.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: We sort of knew what we were doing wrong as we were going up, but just kind of did it anyway because, uh, you know, we just, we were just so excited.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, we were just back, you know.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: It was like just like we needed the squeeze every moment of the trip and we had a little bit of daylight left so let's go get it.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: And there was this one clear moment where, you know, I think Jason and Andy, they kind of stopped and they were like, yeah, this is kind of not worth it.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like, should we turn around?
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: And like, without even thinking, I mean, you know, the voice in the back of my head was like, you know, yes, you should turn around.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: But like without even thinking, I was like, no way, like, let's get up to the top and see this thing, like, let's go, let's go, let's go.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: So I charge the group up to the top.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: And we finally, just below the top, verse below the top, we finally decided to rip and ski, rip our skins off and ski down.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: And on the third turn, I slipped out my skis popped off, and I played a Koreaning down this mountain right towards this rock band with a really steep, 60 degree section on the other side of the rock band.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: Um, as soon as I fell, I dislocated my shoulder, I tried to put my whip it in my shoulder popped out.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: As soon as I managed to use my leg on a rock right before that sort of that drop off, uh, to stop myself, I broke my leg in the process.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I was bleeding and I was a complete mass and it was, uh, it was real.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: It got really real in that moment, like, you know, in the middle and nowhere.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_01]: Greenland and Winner, 50 miles from the nearest village, high up on this really icy map.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, one of those moments where I was like, wow, I'm in really, I'm in really big trouble right now.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I was fortunate to obviously have Jason with me, who's incredible, he's an incredible mountain partner.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: And the rest of the team,
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: And over the next sort of six and a half to, I don't know, it was like six to eight hours.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_01]: We managed to get me down.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I was basically sliding on my butt with my whip it.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: My shoulder was dislocated the whole time.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: So using my whip it, just inching myself down the mountain with my broken leg.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was a complete mess.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't want to take any pain meds, because I was just worried that if I wasn't lucid enough,
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: ended up taking some pain meds lower than mountain was really really helped me manage to get back down to the hut get my shoulder back in Jason Jason we use this sort of now gene now gene hanging from the wrist technique to just slowly sort of loosen up the muscles because I mean it was it was like you know minus 30 degrees out so everything was so tight from having been you know the cold for that long managed to get the shoulder back in which was really really agonizing
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: And somehow managed to get a rescue out from the same guy who dropped us off from the Greenlander, who looked like the mountain from Game of Thrones.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: He came out and pulled up in his Toyota Helix again for the second time that day after driving over these two mountain ranges and frozen fjords.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: And the first thing he did was he took out this bag that had all these syringes and then he put some morphine
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: And he stabbed me right in the shoulder and he just kind of giggled him.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I've always wanted to do that.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: And, and, you know, next thing I know, I was in this like little hospital and our little like, you know, clinic and, and to see me with.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think for me the biggest lesson from that is obviously, you know, I'm not a professional, you know, while I've done this sort of semi-professionally like I'm not a professional mountain athlete, you know, I have, you know, a great ability to kind of jump in and out of these worlds where I'm like,
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know, trying to compete at a high level in the mountains and then or like, you know, do things at high level in the mountains and then and then like, you know, pursue pursuing my career as well and then also my family.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for me that was a really defining moment, especially set to the backdrop of the fact that I was about to be a father.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: I just needed to be a little more realistic with, you know, with my own expectations of myself and with my own like understanding of my ability and like,
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: And while I have these aspirations to always be better in all these different environments, like I think I just kind of, you know, as a moment for me, where I was like, all right, it's not just about me anymore, like I really need to start playing and save.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I really think that that moment just sort of redefined the way in which I assess risk and like the formula that now I approach to making decisions and I'm kind of on wavering.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: And it's in the formula's gotten more and more strict and more kids have had, like, you know, my risk tolerance is certainly diminished quite substantially, but, you know, I think that in hindsight gave me it was a really good lesson for me and like helping me establish, you know, a set of tools to to analyze a situation to determine whether or not it's worth it.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, that's kind of stuck with me ever since.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_03]: So much I want to mention there, but holy cow, I did not expect a story that I didn't think.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_03]: That was hardcore.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_01]: That was real.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_03]: Well, well, you mentioned that risk assessment, and I can't tell you, like, there's things unimaginable to me that I'm like, there's no way I'm never going to stop doing this.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: a couple kids in it's like I have zero desire to do that ever again like it's not even I don't even want to you know what I mean it's not like it's like not a loss even to me it's no I'm good never saw that coming it's so true man I came into this whole paranoid journey thinking to myself like you know that I'm kind of immune to like this is who I am and like this is what I love this is what makes me come alive so I can't imagine a world in which I'm not going to do that you know I think
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I want my kids to go and live their most alive lives, right?
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I want them to really pursue their passions.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: And, and if I'm not doing that, how are how am I going to, you know, give them how how's that message going to come across?
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: But I think
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that really changed in that moment and then in subsequent, you know, experiences I had, but then now to the point where I still will do things that are considered very risky, but not without a substantial amount of preparation and like with like a real focus.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: And if at any moment along the way, it doesn't feel good I'm out.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I, you know, I tried to set the speed record on Denali back in 2019, you know, with my daughter on the way, my son, my son here.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the things going into it was like, I need a partner for this because I'm not comfortable.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not comfortable roping up through going on rope through the lower glacier.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: And my partner had a had a pretty big fall just about didn't only pass, really, really close call.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was probably a Greenland moment.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he decided that he was, he wasn't in for it anymore.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, for me, it was, I was sort of set to the backdrop of six months of really intense training and hard focus on the subjective.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of had set that rule for myself and going into it and that promise to my family.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: And as soon as he made that decision, my decision was made.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: So I didn't end up going for the speed record.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: We did get to go and summit and ski some fun stuff.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: But it's just a prime example of how my whole approach to this risk assessment risk tolerance is really evolved.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so you're not setting speed records on to not only, but you still get the climb to not only like you that's still there that's still possible.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_03]: So, and that's what I was I was so surprised to hear you say how much your wrist tolerance has come down yet you're still doing these incredibly badass things that any of us would be.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_03]: thrilled to do.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_03]: So within those confinements, you can still find plenty of adventure.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like it's so much to do.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's this like whole new dynamic with kids where you get to experience, like introduce them to it as well, and have adventures with them.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: And like that is, you know, mostly fulfilling.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes there's some pain pain associated with it, but like,
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: That is a pretty fulfilling experience when you see your kid feel great about themselves having climb something or just accomplishing something.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's really cool to share your passions with your kids.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: While I've sort of definitely taken a step back, my ambitions to go fast and hard or do anything
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, particularly dangerous have definitely subsided, but it's been replaced by something that, you know, I find the glaze for filling and I'm also getting that thrill and other aspects of my life like I really, you know, you know, you know, I think the whole career and as entrepreneur is also giving me elements of that as well.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I think, you know, I've been able to balance it out pretty well all things considered.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's awesome man.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_03]: And so, well, leading into that, there's obviously principles with beat Monday that you can apply to any aspect of your life.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_03]: What do you think the biggest lesson is or one of them that you've learned and you've applied elsewhere?
- 35:23[SPEAKER_03]: And I also want to say, I can't imagine the whiplash of coming off a mountain and hours later being, you know, changing a diaper answering e-mails and just having to, there is a lot of things.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to be clear with anyone
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: We're not very productive when we come back sometimes it's okay, but like honestly sometimes we just go sleep
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't want you guys to think that we're like running into high level meetings after this all the time because we try and keep our schedules on Mondays light when we come back from these missions.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will say though the week the week always feels a little better when you have an adventure in your back pocket like that, you know.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: Let me let me think about that question you know ultimately there's a lot of like I'm a really curious person and there's a lot of things I want to do and with my time on earth and and there's a lot of things I'm interested in.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I just have just kind of come to the realization that like if I'm ever going to get to experience all these things, I need to create a framework in terms of how I approach my life.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: And if I look at my calendar and I look at what I do every day and what I eat every day and what I drink every day and all these things,
- 36:36[SPEAKER_01]: and like I just assess it whether or not it's it's whether or not it's getting me closer to the things I want to do and I think that's really it's an ongoing journey.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a figured out by any means but I really just try and I really try and check in with myself frequently to like
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: see sort of how the overall picture looks and whether or not I'm moving towards these kind of clear goals that I've set for myself.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_01]: And just think about like, you know, do the best I can to, you know, optimize, you know, aspects of my life to sort of facilitate that.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_01]: now I will also say like sometimes I like to just relax like I it's not always just trying to like perform at the highest level in all aspects of things but you know I find it relaxing and enjoyable when like I'm able to you know what I'm able to to do new things and experience new things and and so
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think the formula to that is to just really try and be disciplined and structured.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: And just ask yourself the question, like, is what I'm doing in this moment, getting me closer to my goals and getting me closer to the person I want to be?
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, another useful, another useful pointer I would say is like, you know, you should do your best to surround yourself with people who inspire you and people who you look up to and, you know, and that's a hard thing to do sometimes.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we, you know, we create friends when we're younger in life and we sort of go on, you know, on our own paths and those paths are evolving and you have to really really think and be honest with yourself about your friendships and the people you surround yourself with, whether or not they're supporting you and your goals and whether or not, you know, you, they're healthy influences on.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so I think there's a lot of, there's a lot of elements to it, you know, I'm still trying to figure it out.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm trial and error constantly for me, looking to gain an edge and just the way I feel and, and like, you know, the way I'm able to, you know, accomplish, you know, goals and various aspects of my life.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so glad you mentioned framework early in that answer yet that that's all adventurers that's all I ever say is you know it's just framework for memories for growth for fulfillment that's all it is it's not really the adventurer it's the framework that it gives you the space for all those things to grow within it and that's what I'm sure you've gotten a lot of feedback for with the Beat Monday series.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_03]: What is one of the coolest beat Monday trips that you've heard about through either a fan or a one that you actually didn't do yourself but someone else did because they were a fan of beat Monday?
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, well, I will say like we're hearing we're seeing a lot of folks go and do that some of the missions that we've we've done as well, which is awesome, you know, like literally the same thing you did like there's same ones yeah same ones yeah, there are you know, there's this one guy who I'm sure your audience knows Jason Hargrave, oh yeah, he's one of our ambassadors.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Jason is at KT as he's known.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_01]: Jason's gone and done all of ours and set the FKT on them, which is which is really cool and he's it's it's really cool to see and push the limits on things and and we've had, you know, man, we've had folks reach out about everything from, you know, I ran my first 5k this weekend and like,
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the the message in beat Monday really resonated with me.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: I started this training program and like I ran my first five games weekend and like honestly those those those like those are the types of things that I think resonate with Jason and I more than like the got you know like ultimately we're creating a TV show so we're trying to push boundaries and like set up chances for you know failure but like it's not all about the ground and pound you know go crush yourself and you know show up that's not really what the message is.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's really just about whether it's in the outdoors or whether it's completely unrelated, just hold it yourself to a standard and and, you know, structuring your life in a way that like that makes room for it.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: And so anyone who reaches out whether or not they went to Iceland for the weekend and just had an adventure or, you know, we're in the first 5k it's these are the types of experiences that we hear from folks that are that are really memorable.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_03]: I'm curious, do you find a challenging or a misconception with folks to watch beat Monday or a fans of you that you have to maintain this like adventurous persona all the time or just you know adrenaline junkie type person when maybe maybe you're not always like that or not like that very often at all.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I think I like personally speaking, I've always really tried to have like a balanced approach to life.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like I've never like completely identified as as like a mountain or mountain person or a person solely or as like a you know an entrepreneur solely or whatever.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's just, it's just a funny concept that we have to be all in on these one things and that we don't have curiosities that are driving us elsewhere.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_01]: I am certainly in love with adventure and the experiences that it provides and so that's definitely real, but the truth is, I have so many interests that are completely outside of that that would probably be bizarre to hear for the audience, but like you know, I
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: I play cello, I have a startup, you know, in the tech space, my wife and I have a charity and kind of like, you know, there's all these different things that I like to do.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_01]: Adventure just happens to be the one that we have a TV show around, but I'm certainly, I really like to not sort of put myself into any one particular bucket as much as possible because, you know, that's just not really who I am.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, love that, Mike, that's so cool.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_03]: Love it, and you know what's cool?
- 42:30[SPEAKER_03]: What I love about that too, my life is obviously not, you know, I've got similar buckets where things are just so different.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_03]: There's really no overlap in those Venn diagrams, which to me, I find so refreshing because if I totally just bomb in one day or one week, the other bucket might have done amazing.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_03]: And you can kind of lean on that, you know what I'm saying?
- 42:52[SPEAKER_01]: Totally totally and it's just the truth is like I don't think as humans like we I may be some of us were put on this earth for one thing Maybe like Lebron James was put on this earth for just being a basketball player Although I think Lebron James would laugh in the face of that comment because he's so much more than Yeah, I mean one of the things that has actually kind of bothered me about the adventure community in the climbing community a little bit over the years is just that like It is very sort of incestuous and like and you're kind of like
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: you're either in and you're like, you adopt this persona and you're this person and you talk a certain way and you act a certain way and you do hardcore things or you give up all these other ambitions or you're not.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that's always kind of bothered me because I feel like I know some folks who are really strong out in athletes who are doctors and lawyers and who do
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, all sorts of incredible things outside of it and haven't given up on their other passions and their other ambitions to commit to this lifestyle, that doesn't mean that they're not core or they're not good or they're not, you know, a part of the community just means that, you know, they have other curiosities and I think what like.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, sometimes my challenge to a door community would be like we really sort of pride ourselves on being welcoming and and sort of open arm, you know, open arms when it comes to this stuff, but I think, you know, we could all be a little more open minded to to what it actually means to be a part of a community, you don't have to be necessarily the most hardcore, you don't have to be solely committed to being a climber in order to be accepted in the climate community, I think.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_01]: that that that that is where I think we have a room to cross room room for growth as a community.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_03]: Can it couldn't agree more couldn't agree more sometimes it's just so refreshing to unplug.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_03]: From that community and jumped solely into another one.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I tell you what, I'd love to ask one more beat Monday question and jump into a little rapid fire where it was good or a little bit more about those curiosities.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_03]: Tell us, tell us maybe one.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_03]: bucket list trip for beat Monday, something that you think would be really amazing that that might be pushing the limits of what's possible in a weekend.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_03]: And also what is the future of beat Monday tell us a little bit about that?
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, great questions.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so I would say the bucket list one is one that we've attempted, but we haven't completed successfully and only because of the weather, but we would really like to climb and climb and ski coat of Axie from from from Colorado
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: a couple of years ago, we went down there and
- 45:27[SPEAKER_01]: If the weather was good, we were gonna nail it, you know, like everything worked out, but we got crushed by weather and we actually didn't even leave the high hot.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: We left the mountain and went to the hot springs.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_01]: That mountain is like, you know, what your kids would draw if you asked them to draw the perfect mountain.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yes.
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it is just so, so beautiful.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: And Ecuador's such a cool country and the thought that you could go as far so far,
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: and do something so big in such a short period of time is really fun, I think, you know, every once in a while, not every weekend.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: So that would probably be the big one that is still sort of, you know, bothering me a little bit and one that I'm hoping we can do at some point.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of the future of the series, you know, it's, we're at a really interesting point right now.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think our goal for the series moving forward is to really bring other folks into the mix with us.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think we, we really love going on adventures together and pushing ourselves.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: But not as much as we love helping other people realize their goals and helping other folks sort of,
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: uh, you know, achieve their goals in the outdoors as well.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, I think the future of be Monday will have a lot of special guests and different different types of experiences combined with, you know, some some big epic adventures, maybe like the outdoor lawn or some other ones as well.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll we'll be doing another season next year as well.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: So that's that's coming up.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: And then we also have a bunch of new other things that we're going to be launching, you know, New Year.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_01]: We have a newsletter.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: that will be releasing on a weekly basis as well as there's talks about a podcast as well.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: But really like the goal is my hope with the B Monday series is to really start to expand it beyond just the adventure.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: That ends and really start to speak to all folks who have a desire to, you know, create a framework for their life that allows, you know,
- 47:26[SPEAKER_01]: you know, all of their passions to thrive.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that's really sort of my hope for where we take the series beyond and the concept beyond just, you know, the adventures that that Jason and I do.
