- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome into our first Wednesday jags Am of training camp.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Eleventh day of practice. Here, we're really getting into the
- 0:24Speaker 1: dog days at this point. We welcome you into Jagsam
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Sporting on KA Nanni Stevens, Brian Sexton, John Osier
- 0:29Speaker 1: with me. We're here in the hyundaiy studios, but we'll
- 0:31Speaker 1: give you live looks at practice that just kicked off
- 0:33Speaker 1: a little while ago. Training camp gets going once again.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Let's talk about some big things we've seen the last
- 0:39Speaker 1: couple of days at practice and what's gone on since
- 0:41Speaker 1: last week. Quality reps. That's our big thing. Number One.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We got to see a scrimmage in the stadium last week, Brian.
- 0:47Speaker 1: That was the first time we got to see some
- 0:48Speaker 1: actual game action from that. Normally it's just a practice
- 0:51Speaker 1: inside the stadium, but it was pretty cool to see
- 0:53Speaker 1: how much emphasis they actually put on using that scrimmage
- 0:56Speaker 1: as a tool to figure out what they've done on
- 0:58Speaker 1: the team.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You're always look would of that tribe because you guys
- 1:01Speaker 2: go through the motions on the practice field. Not not
- 1:02Speaker 2: to say that they're not giving it, they're old, but
- 1:04Speaker 2: it gets to be muscle memory and then you get
- 1:08Speaker 2: out into the stadium and Liam Cohen. John referenced this yesterday.
- 1:10Speaker 2: He said, when the fans are there, it's just a
- 1:12Speaker 2: little different. We see things differently, and so every rep
- 1:16Speaker 2: out there had the feel of a little bit more importance.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And obviously it isn't any more important than today's practice
- 1:23Speaker 2: or tomorrow's practice, but it was fun to watch on
- 1:25Speaker 2: Friday night.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah. I think what was kind of cool and interesting
- 1:28Speaker 3: was the playmakers made plays. Trevor Lawrence had a really
- 1:33Speaker 3: had a really good scrimmage. Brian Thomas Junior sort of
- 1:36Speaker 3: came alive. I don't want to say he hadn't been
- 1:38Speaker 3: playing well early, but he certainly had his best night
- 1:42Speaker 3: and best day during that. And they showed some explosiveness
- 1:48Speaker 3: in that scrimmage. And Liam Cohen to me afterward, I
- 1:51Speaker 3: don't want to say relieved, but he felt very good
- 1:54Speaker 3: about it. He's an offensive guy. The offense looked good.
- 1:57Speaker 3: They got going. I did think the scrimmage was significant,
- 2:01Speaker 3: maybe as as significant as a scrimmage I've seen around here.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Let's go to our second big thing, which is practice reps. Obviously,
- 2:08Speaker 1: we've put a ton of emphasis on seeing what we
- 2:10Speaker 1: see a training camp. The coaches do too, and at
- 2:12Speaker 1: this point, Lam coaches he's not quite sure exactly who
- 2:15Speaker 1: will be playing in the preseas year.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's big, you know.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I mean you don't know what you have ever, right,
- 2:23Speaker 4: you really don't. I mean you have a feel you
- 2:25Speaker 4: know what you're doing against each other. But as we
- 2:29Speaker 4: saw even in the scrimmage the other night, like we'd
- 2:31Speaker 4: be lying if we didn't see some you know, bright
- 2:35Speaker 4: eyes and maybe getting into guys doing some things that
- 2:39Speaker 4: maybe they hadn't been doing in practice settings because we
- 2:42Speaker 4: were in the stadium and there were some fans there.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:44Speaker 4: It's just it is different to go through the pregame routine,
- 2:49Speaker 4: to get into your routine of getting ready to go
- 2:51Speaker 4: play a game. But also, like you mentioned, going and
- 2:54Speaker 4: competing against somebody else.
- 2:57Speaker 1: John, when we talk about the coaching staff and what
- 2:59Speaker 1: they're looking for, they want to see preseason games store
- 3:02Speaker 1: for some of the younger guys. But a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 1: the focus during practice is on the veterans and getting
- 3:07Speaker 1: to know this new system, and I feel like they
- 3:08Speaker 1: can take more from practice at times.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, Brian wrote about it this morning and and Liam
- 3:14Speaker 3: Cone did a nice job of talking about this in
- 3:16Speaker 3: another sound bite. He was with the Rams who didn't
- 3:19Speaker 3: play any players during preseason, I mean any starters during preseason.
- 3:25Speaker 3: He's also with the Bucks that played it a lot,
- 3:26Speaker 3: and he talked about it being a dilemma on what
- 3:30Speaker 3: to do because you do want to see these guys
- 3:32Speaker 3: play reps. You want to see him play meaningful stuff.
- 3:35Speaker 3: We also don't want to get him hurt. So I
- 3:37Speaker 3: my guest Brian is that he'll play starters in this
- 3:42Speaker 3: game and this year because it's so new and he
- 3:45Speaker 3: wants to see it. My guess is as he goes
- 3:48Speaker 3: forward and gets more comfortable with what he's got, I
- 3:51Speaker 3: think he goes to the McVeigh way, and I could
- 3:54Speaker 3: easily see him deeper into his career playing very few
- 3:57Speaker 3: starters in the preseason. That's just a gut he hasn't told. No.
- 4:00Speaker 3: That's sort of my feeling from listen to him yesterday.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Well, in the conversation yesterday was have you decided yet?
- 4:05Speaker 2: And he said they were going back and forth. He
- 4:07Speaker 2: mentioned that he came from the LA method where they
- 4:10Speaker 2: didn't play. I thought it was also interesting, kay that
- 4:13Speaker 2: he talked about how that was a great leverage point
- 4:15Speaker 2: when they were looking at college free agents, that you
- 4:17Speaker 2: compete to sign and talking about bringing them in and
- 4:20Speaker 2: giving them more reps in game situations because their starters
- 4:24Speaker 2: weren't going to play. But that's just an aside. He
- 4:26Speaker 2: also talked about being in Tampa last year with Todd
- 4:29Speaker 2: Bowles and they did play and they got those starters
- 4:32Speaker 2: in because they needed to get some quality reps with him.
- 4:34Speaker 3: So, John, I'm with you.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I don't know that they're going to play a lot,
- 4:37Speaker 2: but I think Liam is installing his system and his
- 4:40Speaker 2: method and his process, and so we're going to see
- 4:42Speaker 2: just a touch of these guys. I mean maybe next
- 4:45Speaker 2: Sunday in New Orleans we'll see a little bit more
- 4:47Speaker 2: of them, and probably not at all in the finale
- 4:49Speaker 2: against Miami.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But it is a balance.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It's a difficult balance for coaches because their instincts say,
- 4:56Speaker 2: I want to get them out on the field. It's football,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and yet their preservation instinct says, I need these guys.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Don't open a gay against Carolina.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Our final big thing today is going to be game reps.
- 5:06Speaker 1: We're talking about the preseason game coming up on Saturday
- 5:08Speaker 1: against the Steelers. At this point, we don't know what
- 5:10Speaker 1: the starters will be playing in terms of playing time
- 5:13Speaker 1: or if he'll play at all. Very Lauren said, he'll
- 5:15Speaker 1: be ready if his name is called.
- 5:18Speaker 5: I think it does help, you know, just from the standpoint,
- 5:22Speaker 5: especially as a quarterback. You know you can get hit.
- 5:24Speaker 5: It's you know, all off season, in all training camp
- 5:26Speaker 5: you can't get hit, So there's a different Sometimes there's
- 5:29Speaker 5: a different time clock. In the pocket. You try to
- 5:31Speaker 5: always play it real and practice, but sometimes you kind
- 5:34Speaker 5: of hang on to the ball and take a little
- 5:35Speaker 5: bit more chances in the pocket because there's no consequences.
- 5:38Speaker 5: But when you're live, it's a little different. So it's
- 5:41Speaker 5: nice to fill the time clock sped up, to fill
- 5:43Speaker 5: the communication with the whole offense, with offensive line protection,
- 5:48Speaker 5: you know, just live full speed reps. I think it
- 5:50Speaker 5: is valuable, you know. I think there's gonna be smart
- 5:53Speaker 5: too though as far as how much you play and
- 5:55Speaker 5: then all that stuff, that's that's for you know, coaching
- 5:57Speaker 5: all them to figure out and for us just to
- 5:59Speaker 5: do our job.
- 6:00Speaker 3: So I do think there's value though, Brian.
- 6:03Speaker 1: It's not up to us. But would you like to
- 6:05Speaker 1: see Trevor out there doing this new offense a little bit?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yes, No, listen, I think there's value for him because
- 6:09Speaker 2: he's missed so much time because of injury going back
- 6:13Speaker 2: to the end of the twenty twenty three season, he
- 6:15Speaker 2: just hasn't been completely healthy. So for him in a
- 6:18Speaker 2: new system and John, we've talked extensively about his footwork,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and he's talked about where his eyes and his feet
- 6:24Speaker 2: find that rhythm where they're together. He mentioned that specifically yesterday,
- 6:28Speaker 2: what you can get a lot of work done on
- 6:30Speaker 2: the practice field. I just think it would be better
- 6:32Speaker 2: for him to get some work on the game field
- 6:35Speaker 2: on Saturday night against the Steelers so that you come
- 6:37Speaker 2: back to practice next week and have something to be
- 6:39Speaker 2: able to compare and contract.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it sort of speaks to what we
- 6:42Speaker 3: were talking about earlier. If Trevor was in his second
- 6:46Speaker 3: or third year in Liam's system, I could see them
- 6:49Speaker 3: not playing them with him never having played in it,
- 6:52Speaker 3: and with you know, wasn't a great practice yesterday. He
- 6:55Speaker 3: had been having a lot of good practices leading up
- 6:57Speaker 3: to it. I would just be stunned if they don't
- 7:00Speaker 3: play the starters with Trevor Lawrence sometime in the first
- 7:03Speaker 3: couple of games, just because I still think there's learning
- 7:07Speaker 3: and I think there's Trevor's still trying to get to
- 7:10Speaker 3: that muscle memory point with his footwork, and in this offense,
- 7:14Speaker 3: I think you need in order to get there, you
- 7:16Speaker 3: got to do it in a game at some point, you.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Know, I thought it was interesting, I should kai he
- 7:20Speaker 2: talked about calling Mike Tomlin, the coach of the Steelers,
- 7:23Speaker 2: who wanted to have a conversation with him. You hear
- 7:25Speaker 2: coaches john talk about that with respect to joint practices.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I've never heard in more than thirty years of doing
- 7:31Speaker 2: this that them talk about talking before a game.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you started to hear it a little bit in
- 7:36Speaker 3: the last couple of years. I'm with you to your point.
- 7:40Speaker 3: I can't imagine Tom Coughlin and I'm drawing a blank
- 7:45Speaker 3: on who they may have played. I can't imagine getting
- 7:49Speaker 3: on an old landline back in the day and saying, hey,
- 7:51Speaker 3: you want to play your starters in at the third
- 7:55Speaker 3: Jeff Fisher probably wouldn't have done it with but they
- 7:57Speaker 3: weren't playing in the preseason either. But I think it's
- 8:01Speaker 3: I think it's a good change for the league. But
- 8:04Speaker 3: it does speak to what I this was always what
- 8:07Speaker 3: preseason was. Now the league sort of admits it Hey,
- 8:10Speaker 3: let's get this thing ready. It it doesn't matter who
- 8:14Speaker 3: wins or loses. But it is an interesting change because
- 8:18Speaker 3: up to four or five years ago, I'd never heard it.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And I just laugh when I think about Tom and
- 8:22Speaker 3: Bill Parcells getting together talking about starters.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And I do think there's some regret this year that
- 8:26Speaker 2: they didn't get more practice time with another team. I
- 8:30Speaker 2: know that they were looking at it and it didn't
- 8:31Speaker 2: fit up. They've got that one day two weeks from
- 8:34Speaker 2: tomorrow against the Miami Dolphins. But that's really what the
- 8:36Speaker 2: preseason is becoming. And when we go to an eighteen
- 8:38Speaker 2: game schedule, you're gonna see even fewer preseason games. So
- 8:41Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be more about this, how do we
- 8:43Speaker 2: get the most work done, each of us working together.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Absolutely, stay with us here on jag Zam. We're gonna
- 8:48Speaker 1: talk a little bit about the wide receiver group and
- 8:50Speaker 1: also some names you need to know on this roster.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Jag.
- 9:03Speaker 1: They am brought to you by Fields Auto Groups see
- 9:04Speaker 1: Fields First, Jacksonville's premiere luxury auto group. You can head
- 9:07Speaker 1: over to Fields Auto dot com.
- 9:12Speaker 4: We got Alex Kemp out here, a great you know
- 9:15Speaker 4: referee crew out here.
- 9:17Speaker 3: That that did a great job.
- 9:19Speaker 4: We met with them as a staff at seven am
- 9:21Speaker 4: this morning. They will meet with our players, excuse me,
- 9:24Speaker 4: this afternoon. They'll also meet with the rookies and explain
- 9:27Speaker 4: some of the rule changes from college to pro this evening.
- 9:31Speaker 4: And so we are making a conscious effort and the
- 9:35Speaker 4: league is making a conscious effort. Detailing formations, alignments, assignments
- 9:40Speaker 4: and motions is a huge part of the rule.
- 9:44Speaker 3: The rules this year.
- 9:44Speaker 4: The two men in motion, illegal formation, shaving, the line
- 9:48Speaker 4: of scrimmage is show all showed up today, all the
- 9:51Speaker 4: things that they are trying to emphasize. So long winded
- 9:54Speaker 4: way of answering your question, I'd like a little bit more.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Discipline.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I touch William Pellen looking for some discipline in the
- 10:02Speaker 1: next couple of days before the preseason matchup.
- 10:04Speaker 3: And obviously some of these guys are.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Going to be in their first NFL football game on Saturday,
- 10:08Speaker 1: which is pretty cool. And we have some new names,
- 10:10Speaker 1: not necessarily all of them rookies, but people that you
- 10:14Speaker 1: know you need to know about going to camp, whether
- 10:16Speaker 1: it's a storyline they're pushing to.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Start or whatever it is.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Brian, who's someone a name that you think is important.
- 10:22Speaker 2: To well, well, I'm going with the veterans side of
- 10:23Speaker 2: the kay. I'm going with Devon Hamilton because we haven't
- 10:26Speaker 2: seen Mason Smith on the practice field yet. You see
- 10:28Speaker 2: him walking around and that enormous frame that he's got,
- 10:32Speaker 2: and I was told by Josh Allen back during OTAs
- 10:36Speaker 2: that he really put the work in and they were
- 10:37Speaker 2: excited about having him in the middle to push the
- 10:40Speaker 2: pocket and take some of the pressure off of the
- 10:42Speaker 2: outside guys he and Trayvon, And yet he hasn't played yet,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and I haven't seen Eric Armstead on the practice field,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and that kind of makes you wonder where he's at
- 10:51Speaker 2: with his health. So there's a lot of pressure on
- 10:53Speaker 2: Devon Hamilton, who last year played a lot of football
- 10:57Speaker 2: and played pretty well. He kind of worked his way
- 11:00Speaker 2: back from the twenty twenty three injury. But John, it
- 11:02Speaker 2: sure feels like Devon Hamilton is the man in the middle.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I know that Jordan Jefferson and some of the other
- 11:07Speaker 2: young guys are there, but Devon's capable of playing at
- 11:10Speaker 2: a high level. And if this team is going to
- 11:12Speaker 2: have to wait to get Mason and Eric back in
- 11:14Speaker 2: the rotation, it's all gonna be on big Devon Hamilton.
- 11:19Speaker 3: It feels like Tyler Lacy's is gonna matter this year.
- 11:22Speaker 3: But I'm with you, Devon Hamilton. It is to me
- 11:27Speaker 3: the guy they paid him two or three years ago
- 11:30Speaker 3: off of the twenty two season, I think it was,
- 11:33Speaker 3: and he had some big time games because of the
- 11:36Speaker 3: back and because of working his way. It doesn't feel
- 11:39Speaker 3: like he you know, he's maybe been a seven compared
- 11:42Speaker 3: to what they hoped would be a nine something like that.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Not bad, but not dominant. The defensive tackle position's weird
- 11:49Speaker 3: because there's potential there with Mason Smith, Eric Armstead and
- 11:53Speaker 3: Von Hamilton for this to be an Ace's group, but
- 11:57Speaker 3: there's also enough uncertainty around them all that you just
- 12:00Speaker 3: don't know. So I think Von Hamilton is really.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Key, especially in a position group that struggled so much
- 12:04Speaker 1: last year. We're definitely gonna need to see some improvement
- 12:07Speaker 1: there for sure. Uh, John, who's someone you have your
- 12:09Speaker 1: eye on? Is someone a name that people should know?
- 12:12Speaker 3: Laquent Allen and I only chose Laquent over Quinson. I'm
- 12:18Speaker 3: gonna blow the names Lynn and Jackson cause they feel
- 12:20Speaker 3: to me like very much the same guy. I think
- 12:24Speaker 3: le Quinn's ahead. He was a seventh round draft pick.
- 12:26Speaker 3: H he's gonna be on the team and he's a
- 12:29Speaker 3: seventh round draft pick. The running back room is really deep,
- 12:32Speaker 3: but they really like this guy. Their issue is they
- 12:36Speaker 3: have five backs they like, can you keep all five?
- 12:41Speaker 3: I think they love the situation. I don't know. I
- 12:43Speaker 3: don't know that they have an elite guy at the
- 12:45Speaker 3: running back position. I don't know that you need an
- 12:47Speaker 3: elite guy at the running back position. But I think
- 12:49Speaker 3: they have again going back with you know my number system,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and they've got five guys who are eight and sevens
- 12:54Speaker 3: who are really really good. But Quinn Allen's tough. He
- 12:57Speaker 3: passed blocks well as as Kay's had numerous times. This
- 13:02Speaker 3: guy might be a real fine.
- 13:04Speaker 2: He's a natural receiver.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean natural.
- 13:06Speaker 2: You just see the way that he reaches for the
- 13:08Speaker 2: ball and how it just settles into his hands and
- 13:10Speaker 2: he's not looking to turn up the field before he's
- 13:14Speaker 2: got it. I mean it's he's a talented guy.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I love a nasty Yeah. I mean he'll fight you.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I know he likes good and so what I know
- 13:23Speaker 3: that about.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You give me the problem of having too good of
- 13:25Speaker 2: a running back room?
- 13:27Speaker 3: Just off the top.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Travis Etn and Tank Bixby, I think have both had
- 13:31Speaker 2: good practices when I have focused on them. I have
- 13:33Speaker 2: seen them running with power, which is not Etn's specialty.
- 13:38Speaker 2: But also, you know, it was just two years ago
- 13:40Speaker 2: that Etn gave you fourteen fifteen hundred total yards and
- 13:44Speaker 2: twelve touchdowns. So if you've got him playing at a
- 13:48Speaker 2: higher level in this offense and Laquin Allen out there,
- 13:52Speaker 2: who does a lot of the same things he does
- 13:53Speaker 2: in terms of catching the ball man, you've got a
- 13:55Speaker 2: lot of options for your offensive coordinator.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Yeah. Just a note on Travis. I know people are
- 13:59Speaker 3: watching this and trying to go back now to the
- 14:01Speaker 3: March storyline, Oh, could they trade Trafs. I don't think
- 14:06Speaker 3: that's happening. They are really impressed and love what Travis
- 14:09Speaker 3: Atns brought him. I think they like him more than
- 14:12Speaker 3: they thought they would when they got it.
- 14:14Speaker 2: He's been the guy I've been most impressed with so
- 14:15Speaker 2: far in this camp because he had a lot to
- 14:17Speaker 2: play for coming in on the fifth year option. He's
- 14:20Speaker 2: on a one year deal. In the running backs, we
- 14:21Speaker 2: know how they've been I don't say devalued, but they're
- 14:24Speaker 2: not getting the money that other positions are. He looks
- 14:26Speaker 2: sensational and I went back and looked at the numbers
- 14:28Speaker 2: and last year was an off year for him, but
- 14:31Speaker 2: the two years before, his two years of playing in
- 14:33Speaker 2: twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three, he had more
- 14:35Speaker 2: than fourteen hundred all purpose yards and more than I
- 14:38Speaker 2: think he had twelve touchdowns one year and eight the others.
- 14:41Speaker 2: So he was a productive, explosive player. And if they
- 14:44Speaker 2: get that guy, wow, they got a lot to work with.
- 14:46Speaker 1: They've definitely been focusing on using him in the passing
- 14:48Speaker 1: game as well, which he's improved upon every time I've
- 14:51Speaker 1: been watching him in practice. I mean a diving catch
- 14:52Speaker 1: the other day was impressive. So definitely good to have
- 14:55Speaker 1: options in the running back room for once. I have
- 14:57Speaker 1: a lot of different people to look at. I went
- 14:59Speaker 1: with the linebacker percent with Jack Kaiser, rookie out of
- 15:02Speaker 1: Notre Dame. They love this guy that they talked a lot,
- 15:05Speaker 1: James Gladstone when I talked to him at the draft.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You know, they looked at a lot of guys that
- 15:08Speaker 1: stayed at one school. Captains on their teams have that
- 15:12Speaker 1: leadership capability, especially at linebacker. That's what you want to
- 15:14Speaker 1: see out there. Obviously we have that in Foya Luken,
- 15:16Speaker 1: but got a plan for the future as well. They
- 15:18Speaker 1: love this guy. So far, he's been contributing on special teams,
- 15:21Speaker 1: which will probably be one of his main roles.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But that's a crowded room as well. And now that.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Jayleen McLoud fellow rookie, he's injured right now, a lower
- 15:28Speaker 1: body injury. I believe week to week, so I could
- 15:31Speaker 1: open some things up there. But they love Dennis Gardek
- 15:33Speaker 1: John who just came off of a pup list recently.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They love the energy from him, so could be could
- 15:39Speaker 1: be interesting to see where they go with those choices.
- 15:40Speaker 3: It's gonna be a new looking roster, and there's a
- 15:42Speaker 3: lot of guys we're talking about who who weren't here.
- 15:45Speaker 3: The stamp of these guys is going to be on
- 15:47Speaker 3: this team quickly. I like Kaiser as well. You know,
- 15:51Speaker 3: he's he's a guy who you would think, uh needs
- 15:55Speaker 3: to come in and play right away because he was
- 15:57Speaker 3: in college for thirteen years so but he's ready to go. Yeah.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I mean a lot of these guys, because of COVID
- 16:04Speaker 3: I coming here right now, are a little older. They're
- 16:07Speaker 3: not developmental guys. So I would think you would see
- 16:09Speaker 3: Kaiser in a special teams role, and I think there
- 16:12Speaker 3: would be some confidence in him as a backup. Sometimes
- 16:14Speaker 3: you have rookie backups at linebacker who they're hoping don't
- 16:17Speaker 3: play because you just want him on special teams. Kaiser,
- 16:21Speaker 3: I think by by the time the season starts to
- 16:23Speaker 3: be a little more confident in him as a rookie
- 16:25Speaker 3: than maybe others.
- 16:26Speaker 2: You have some really good special teams players here. Daniel
- 16:28Speaker 2: Thomas Dewy wingerd I'm told that Kaiser has the ability
- 16:33Speaker 2: to be a top performer on special teams. He's that smart.
- 16:37Speaker 2: He understands it, and he likes doing it. If he
- 16:39Speaker 2: can do that, he's going to find his way onto
- 16:41Speaker 2: the field.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Also definitely carve him a spot on the roster for sure.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So we've talked a little bit about the names you
- 16:46Speaker 1: need to know. Coming back after the break, we're going
- 16:47Speaker 1: to go into the wide receiver group, do a deep dive,
- 16:49Speaker 1: tell you everything you need to know about that. For
- 16:53Speaker 1: twelve years, Dreambinders Holmes have been proud to call themselves
- 16:55Speaker 1: the official homebuilder of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreambinders dot
- 16:59Speaker 1: com for all of the available inventory and go Jags.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Looking back into Jag Zam today. Eleventh practice so far
- 17:09Speaker 1: of training camp.
- 17:10Speaker 3: We're in it now.
- 17:10Speaker 1: There's a preseason game coming up, but a lot of
- 17:12Speaker 1: the off season talk has been about the weapons and
- 17:14Speaker 1: the wide receiver group groups specifically obviously when you had
- 17:18Speaker 1: Travis Hunter, that's something to be talked about, especially after
- 17:21Speaker 1: the year that Brian Thomas Junior had. But in terms
- 17:23Speaker 1: of Travis Hunter, he's still learning this offense. Liam Cohen
- 17:26Speaker 1: says they're working him in. Obviously he'll play on both
- 17:28Speaker 1: sides of the ball, but they do want him to
- 17:30Speaker 1: feel comfortable when he's out there, and he talked a
- 17:31Speaker 1: little bit yesterday about how they've been easing him into
- 17:34Speaker 1: the offense as well.
- 17:36Speaker 4: He's still learning twelve personnel other positions so that he
- 17:40Speaker 4: can continue to get in right in some of those
- 17:44Speaker 4: personnel groupings. You know, because he plays the F in eleven,
- 17:48Speaker 4: to go and play the Z in twelve is just
- 17:51Speaker 4: you know, it's just another added learning curve that we
- 17:55Speaker 4: need to continue to work on. But you know, I
- 17:58Speaker 4: think he'll say it was probably it was a little
- 17:59Speaker 4: bit more tired than he you know, usually gets, but
- 18:02Speaker 4: I thought, you know, still showed up, made some plays
- 18:04Speaker 4: across the middle, as he's kind of continued to do,
- 18:08Speaker 4: and it's just good to get into that, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 4: habit of As we mentioned, we wanted to get to
- 18:12Speaker 4: this point of post scrimmage just starting to let him
- 18:15Speaker 4: roll in between racks to get him some extra work.
- 18:19Speaker 3: John.
- 18:19Speaker 1: For the first time yesterday we saw Travis Hunter play
- 18:22Speaker 1: both sides in a scrimmage. He's putting he had his
- 18:24Speaker 1: teel jersey on for offense and he put a white
- 18:25Speaker 1: penny on and play defense and not too much of
- 18:28Speaker 1: a break, but similar to what he's gonna be dealing
- 18:29Speaker 1: with in a game.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Yeah, at some point he's got to get used to it.
- 18:32Speaker 3: And I thought they did a smart thing early on.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Liam Cohne talked in that SoundBite about them really wanting
- 18:38Speaker 3: to make sure that he was over his feet each day,
- 18:43Speaker 3: meaning that they weren't giving him too much. They let
- 18:46Speaker 3: him learn. I think letting him go on offense and
- 18:50Speaker 3: then defense on separate days made a lot of sense.
- 18:54Speaker 3: He looked fine to me. It's intriguing, Brian, but so far,
- 19:01Speaker 3: it doesn't feel like they have run into anything where
- 19:03Speaker 3: they've gone whoa this can't happen. Listen, so so far,
- 19:06Speaker 3: so good.
- 19:07Speaker 2: If he's still learning, I mean, all you have to
- 19:09Speaker 2: do is just turn on your Instagram feed and see
- 19:11Speaker 2: all the photos, see all the video of him floating
- 19:15Speaker 2: in mid air and making dramatic catches and making plays.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I mean, if he's still learning, it's hard to see
- 19:20Speaker 2: because he is playing at a natural level for him.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Obviously, the game of football.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Is just part of who he is. I was interested
- 19:27Speaker 2: in how he would handle all of it yesterday, and
- 19:30Speaker 2: I have to just john keep coming back and taking
- 19:32Speaker 2: my conventional wisdom hat off and stop thinking, well, how
- 19:35Speaker 2: much can he handle on offense and how much can
- 19:37Speaker 2: he handle on defense? Because he's different. You have to
- 19:41Speaker 2: see him for what he's capable of doing and understand
- 19:44Speaker 2: they're trying to find a way to maximize what he's
- 19:47Speaker 2: capable of doing, and not thinking, well, that's too many
- 19:48Speaker 2: snaps on offense or he's got to get more snaps
- 19:50Speaker 2: on defense.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Puts your conventional wisdom hat right next to your attack hat.
- 19:55Speaker 3: So I don't think I had it. I think what's
- 19:57Speaker 3: interesting about Travis Hunter is what he can bring in
- 20:02Speaker 3: terms of if he was going to be your number
- 20:04Speaker 3: one sole receiver. I'd be worried, but yam May Brown
- 20:09Speaker 3: and we're talking about receiver, So go into it. Dammy
- 20:12Speaker 3: Brown and Brian Thomas Junior. To me feel like guys
- 20:15Speaker 3: that you're gonna be able to depend on down in
- 20:17Speaker 3: and down out. I'm not saying you couldn't do it
- 20:20Speaker 3: that with Travis, but it seems like he can compliment
- 20:23Speaker 3: those guys with big plays. It feels like a good mix.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I'm not saying Travis Hunter can never do that. I
- 20:29Speaker 3: don't know that I would want to go in with
- 20:30Speaker 3: Travis Hunter having to be the guy who has to
- 20:33Speaker 3: get me eight for one hundred and ten in week one.
- 20:36Speaker 3: If the other guys can get both ninety and Travis
- 20:40Speaker 3: makes two or three big plays to strain the defense. Ye,
- 20:44Speaker 3: he's not under an inordinate amount of pressure to be
- 20:47Speaker 3: the guy, I guess, is my point. I think that's
- 20:48Speaker 3: a good situation.
- 20:49Speaker 2: It was in the scrimmage of the night. There was
- 20:51Speaker 2: one play in particular where you could just see that
- 20:53Speaker 2: the defense was stressed all the way out and here
- 20:55Speaker 2: comes Travis Hunter and no one knows how to cover him.
- 20:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's a good compliment, good mix right
- 21:00Speaker 3: at that spot.
- 21:01Speaker 1: John, I think a good point about Diami Brown. Obviously
- 21:03Speaker 1: a new edition as well. He's on a one year contract,
- 21:05Speaker 1: but he has been able to make some very explosive
- 21:09Speaker 1: plays previously with Washington. We've seen it in practice and
- 21:12Speaker 1: in the scrimmage as well. He's been benefiting from that
- 21:15Speaker 1: grant you. Dinski actually talked about it earlier this week
- 21:17Speaker 1: after the scrimmage about that dynamic play ability that Diami has.
- 21:26Speaker 6: I think that's kind of what you saw a little
- 21:28Speaker 6: bit from him last year.
- 21:29Speaker 3: He has that ability, you know.
- 21:30Speaker 6: I think the improvement in some of the stuff that
- 21:32Speaker 6: he's shown in the run game and even with the
- 21:35Speaker 6: different routes that we've asked him to run will only
- 21:37Speaker 6: hopefully expand his.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Ability to create explosives. But last year, whether.
- 21:41Speaker 6: It was running go balls or vertical routes or with
- 21:43Speaker 6: the ball in hand on screens in different plays, I
- 21:45Speaker 6: think that's something that's in his wheelhouse.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Right. We talked a lot about all these different weapons,
- 21:51Speaker 1: but Diami Brown's kind of benefiting from some of this already.
- 21:55Speaker 1: As you know, you're putting a ton of focus on
- 21:56Speaker 1: Brian Thomas Junior obviously, and Travis Huner somebody's gonna be open.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I saw him in the playoffs, like you guys did,
- 22:02Speaker 2: when he made that run that basically matched his whole season,
- 22:05Speaker 2: So I was curious what he was going to be
- 22:07Speaker 2: when he showed up here. We know he's fast, but
- 22:10Speaker 2: he's also explosive, and there's a difference between the two.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Not everyone who's fast is explosive. He also changes direction
- 22:16Speaker 2: John on a dime, which is really impressive. He's moving
- 22:19Speaker 2: so fast and he can turn and build the other direction.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I think he's got legit ability to be a number two,
- 22:26Speaker 2: a ninety catch guy. I mean, I don't want to
- 22:30Speaker 2: Jimmy and Keenan, right, I mean both of those guys
- 22:32Speaker 2: were capable of putting up more than ninety catches in
- 22:34Speaker 2: a season. I don't know that they've had two guys
- 22:36Speaker 2: here that you'd be able to say that about since then.
- 22:40Speaker 3: I'm with you, and I think we were looking for
- 22:42Speaker 3: the same thing. He hadn't played and been very consistent
- 22:46Speaker 3: in Washington. So when you show up, your first instinct,
- 22:49Speaker 3: you know, was this flash in the pan you're trying
- 22:52Speaker 3: to look for that. He's much more polished, much more
- 22:56Speaker 3: consistent practice in and practice out. Then maybe thought he
- 23:00Speaker 3: would be, and I had nothing to go on before that,
- 23:04Speaker 3: but you just wondered because he hadn't played a whole lot.
- 23:07Speaker 3: He's more veteran and more polished than I expected, and
- 23:10Speaker 3: I think he can be a consistent guy for him
- 23:15Speaker 3: and I kind of wonder when they signed him, Okay,
- 23:17Speaker 3: this might be a guy who explodes every three or
- 23:18Speaker 3: four games. I think between him BTJ, you've got two guys,
- 23:24Speaker 3: it wouldn't surprise you a week to week if you
- 23:27Speaker 3: had to receive. If either of those guys were over
- 23:30Speaker 3: ninety yards, was the consistent go to guy in the offense.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I think they both can handle it. What a difference
- 23:38Speaker 3: between last year and this year's receiving court.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Well, and you and I were both here in ninety
- 23:41Speaker 2: six when Keenan McCardell showed up, and I think he
- 23:43Speaker 2: had like fifty four catches was the most he had
- 23:45Speaker 2: had in his time with the Cleveland Browns, and no
- 23:47Speaker 2: one knew kai what he was going to be. And
- 23:50Speaker 2: it wasn't until you got him on the field and
- 23:53Speaker 2: he figured out how to work opposite Jimmy Well. The
- 23:56Speaker 2: new Jimmy is obviously Brian Thomas, and now Diami has
- 23:59Speaker 2: an opertunity to figure that out, and then you're mixing
- 24:03Speaker 2: Travis Hunter.
- 24:03Speaker 3: I mean, it's it.
- 24:04Speaker 2: This is the best receiving core they've had in more
- 24:07Speaker 2: than twenty years here, maybe twenty five.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about Brian Thomaston. You're obviously
- 24:11Speaker 1: a spectacular rookie season, but now heading into a sophomore campaign,
- 24:15Speaker 1: getting to learn a new offense. Trevor Lawrence working with him,
- 24:18Speaker 1: spoke a little bit about them trying to get on
- 24:20Speaker 1: the same page with this new offense.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Just the communication and talking. I think we've made some
- 24:25Speaker 5: big steps since since the spring, and you got our
- 24:28Speaker 5: thing too. We didn't get to play a full season together,
- 24:30Speaker 5: so you know, we've been trying to build that and
- 24:33Speaker 5: be just in lockstep and always know each other's thinking
- 24:36Speaker 5: and when we get those one on ones, making all
- 24:38Speaker 5: those plays, giving them opportunities, always going to be giving
- 24:41Speaker 5: them a chance to get his hand on the ball.
- 24:42Speaker 5: And there has been some frustration, I think from both
- 24:45Speaker 5: of us, and just offensively because there's been somewhere you know,
- 24:49Speaker 5: I might miss a throw, we might not make a
- 24:51Speaker 5: contested catch, you know, maybe they push coverage to them,
- 24:53Speaker 5: and there is days where it's a little frustrating, and
- 24:55Speaker 5: that's stuff you work through in practice. And we both
- 24:59Speaker 5: expect a lot of out of each other, and I
- 25:00Speaker 5: think that's the cool thing about our relationships. We expect
- 25:02Speaker 5: to make all those plays, so it's frustrating when you don't.
- 25:05Speaker 3: And like I said, we.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Just got to keep working in and keep he's such
- 25:08Speaker 5: a great player. Just keep giving them all the opportunities
- 25:10Speaker 5: and putting the ball somewhere where you can get it
- 25:11Speaker 5: and always giving him a chance.
- 25:13Speaker 3: It's really important Ran Toma Junior.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I probably had one of his best days in the scrimmage.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I would say he struggled other days, John, But I
- 25:20Speaker 1: think it's important to remember he didn't play a time
- 25:22Speaker 1: with Trevor because it was hurt. Last year, a lot
- 25:23Speaker 1: of his success was with mac Jones. So not only
- 25:26Speaker 1: is he learning that new offense, it's got to get
- 25:27Speaker 1: used to working with Trevor again.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and I realized this runs counter to our I
- 25:31Speaker 3: want to see it right now world we live in.
- 25:34Speaker 3: I'll worry about BTJ if by week three there's not
- 25:39Speaker 3: a huge game. And frankly, like he was too good
- 25:45Speaker 3: last year too often to make me think that when
- 25:48Speaker 3: the lights go on, it's not going to be there.
- 25:50Speaker 3: And there have been some moments in practice this year
- 25:54Speaker 3: where you saw it of okay, well that's there's a
- 25:57Speaker 3: comeback ground. I'm thinking about, like, Okay, this is special stuff.
- 26:01Speaker 3: They'll get it. He's too good and this coaching staff
- 26:07Speaker 3: knows to get him the ball. The offense is going
- 26:09Speaker 3: to be too good. I think BTJ will be fine,
- 26:11Speaker 3: and I think they're chemistry. Maybe not week one, but
- 26:14Speaker 3: by by week fear for it. The terror's not dumb.
- 26:17Speaker 3: He's gonna throw BTJ a the ball.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:19Speaker 2: It looks it looks so easy for BTJ last year,
- 26:23Speaker 2: and maybe for some reason it was. But there's always
- 26:25Speaker 2: some semblance of a learning curve when you get here,
- 26:28Speaker 2: and I think maybe he feels the pressure or maybe
- 26:31Speaker 2: he's putting the pressure on himself to take that next
- 26:34Speaker 2: step and rise to the elite level, the Justin Jefferson,
- 26:37Speaker 2: the Jamar Chase level. It'll be that kind of a player,
- 26:39Speaker 2: which I think everyone in this room thinks he's capable
- 26:42Speaker 2: of being. And now you're talking about adding that because
- 26:45Speaker 2: we were told he's a top competitor. John to the
- 26:48Speaker 2: equation of new coach. This quarterback. I just I think
- 26:54Speaker 2: when the lights go on, there.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Are flickered once and that's been in the scrimmage. He
- 26:59Speaker 3: has best day. That's what he is, right, And I
- 27:01Speaker 3: think some of it as well.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Uh, if anyone's been a practice and seeing any of this,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I think some of it's frustrating on his own part
- 27:06Speaker 1: cause he expects himself to be right ten for ten
- 27:09Speaker 1: a hundred percent every single catch, every opportunity. So some
- 27:12Speaker 1: of that is, you know, him being competitive. So I
- 27:14Speaker 1: don't wanna make it sound like he looks terrible at
- 27:16Speaker 1: practice or anything like that, but obviously BTJ is very special.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to his sophomore season. Let's talk a
- 27:22Speaker 1: little bit about rounding out this room. I think Parker
- 27:24Speaker 1: Washington's obviously got that four spot locked up. But who's
- 27:26Speaker 1: the fifth receiver on this team?
- 27:27Speaker 3: John Who? Well, Parker's looked really really good, Uh, better
- 27:31Speaker 3: than I thought he would, and he he gets more
- 27:33Speaker 3: veteran each year, which you're supposed to be, and everybody
- 27:35Speaker 3: he does intriguing obviously is cephas h h. He for
- 27:41Speaker 3: people who haven't really followed it closely, every practice that
- 27:44Speaker 3: makes a big play, ye yeah, Uh, he feels to
- 27:47Speaker 3: me like a guy who I don't know how consistently
- 27:55Speaker 3: he would be if he had to start and play
- 27:59Speaker 3: every game, because I don't know that once defenses would
- 28:04Speaker 3: start to focus on him, I don't know that he
- 28:05Speaker 3: would have the answers yet these other guys do, which
- 28:08Speaker 3: I'm not knocking. He's a first year guy, but I
- 28:10Speaker 3: think if you put him in there as the fourth
- 28:13Speaker 3: or fifth guy, as an optionary once in a while,
- 28:15Speaker 3: he can beat you deep if you're not paying attention
- 28:16Speaker 3: to him every practice. And this is practice eleven. I've
- 28:21Speaker 3: probably written about him in seven practices because he's had
- 28:24Speaker 3: some big play so there's there's some capability there. He's raw,
- 28:28Speaker 3: but it's hard to imagine them not keeping that around
- 28:31Speaker 3: and trying to figure ou how to use it.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Well, you know what I'm gonna say, can you play
- 28:34Speaker 2: on special teams?
- 28:35Speaker 3: There we go, right?
- 28:36Speaker 2: I mean, if he can, then they're looking for a
- 28:38Speaker 2: Tim Jones kind of player.
- 28:40Speaker 3: You're not sure Joshua is that, but I think he's
- 28:43Speaker 3: gonna be around here, but go ahead, right.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Well, but just because of his explosiveness, and I had
- 28:47Speaker 2: heard the practice that I missed, I heard that he
- 28:49Speaker 2: made a big play and went, Okay, well we saw
- 28:51Speaker 2: a big place from him last year, but you just
- 28:53Speaker 2: mentioned the consistency you write about him time and time
- 28:55Speaker 2: and time again. So what I'm going to be looking
- 28:57Speaker 2: for from him on Saturday night against the Steelers and
- 29:00Speaker 2: against the Saints and against the Dolphins is can you
- 29:03Speaker 2: learn to contribute on special teams? I just mentioned the
- 29:06Speaker 2: name Tim Jones, who was a long time wide receiver here,
- 29:10Speaker 2: no plays of you can even remember in the offense,
- 29:13Speaker 2: but Mandity Mack plays on special teams, and they're looking
- 29:16Speaker 2: to find that guy Parker as you mentioned it for well,
- 29:18Speaker 2: he's the return guy, but you need that wide receiver
- 29:21Speaker 2: who's got the speed and the mentality of going down
- 29:26Speaker 2: and making plays when special teams cover the ball.
- 29:28Speaker 1: It'll be an interesting spot to play out as the
- 29:30Speaker 1: rest of the preseason goes along. So says here, we
- 29:32Speaker 1: have one more break in Jags Am, but coming up,
- 29:34Speaker 1: we're going to tell you all about the throwbacks and
- 29:36Speaker 1: which games you're gonna see him in this year. Jags fans,

- 29:52Speaker 1: jags Am. Obviously, last year we got the throwbacks everyone
- 29:55Speaker 1: desperately wanted back in our lives, and now we have
- 29:58Speaker 1: a special announcement about four new games. So check out
- 30:02Speaker 1: the commercial for the throwbacks this year.
- 30:05Speaker 7: Hold it there, Cam, Is that what you're having for breakfast?
- 30:09Speaker 4: Well?
