- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland. The after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about,
- 0:44Speaker 1: among other things, the Riza Ray Kwon method, Man Go
- 0:49Speaker 1: Space Killa, and the ongoing saga of Wu Tang Clan,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and of course your voicemails, text dms and more and
- 0:56Speaker 1: as always, a whole lot of rosy. All right, goes,
- 1:00Speaker 1: let's get into it. So we are just about halfway
- 1:14Speaker 1: through our serialized season on Wu Tang Clan, our first
- 1:17Speaker 1: ever serialized season of Disgraceland, and I'm dying to know
- 1:21Speaker 1: what you guys think of this. Are you into it?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Are you into the serialized storytelling? Do you like having
- 1:26Speaker 1: an episode on each member? Are you pumped? Are you
- 1:28Speaker 1: dying for the next one? Speaking of the next one,
- 1:31Speaker 1: before we get into that, let's recap where we've been
- 1:33Speaker 1: with the series so far. Okay, real quick here. In
- 1:36Speaker 1: just the last two weeks, we've dropped episodes on the Rizza, Raykwon,
- 1:40Speaker 1: Method Man, and Ghost Face Killer. And there's a lot
- 1:42Speaker 1: going on in these episodes. Shootouts, dice games, drug busts,
- 1:45Speaker 1: voodoo rituals, and of course great music, not just Wu
- 1:49Speaker 1: Tang's music, but the music that inspired Wu Tang Clan,
- 1:52Speaker 1: The Dell Phonics, the Temptations, Big Daddy Kane Run, DMC, Heavy,
- 1:56Speaker 1: d Stacks Records, Kung Fu soundtracks. The list goes on
- 2:00Speaker 1: and on. But at the heart of the narrative of
- 2:02Speaker 1: this Wu Tang Clan story, there is this ongoing investigation
- 2:06Speaker 1: into Wu as a front for gun running and crime,
- 2:10Speaker 1: a totally bonkers investigation started by cops in New York
- 2:14Speaker 1: and in Ohio actually that eventually bubbled up to the
- 2:16Speaker 1: ATF and then all the way to the FBI, the
- 2:19Speaker 1: FBI who for years labeled Wu Tang Clan internally with
- 2:23Speaker 1: the code twenty eight one F two eight one F,
- 2:26Speaker 1: which is bureau speak for major criminal organization as in
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Gambino crime family. This is insane. So in the
- 2:35Speaker 1: coming weeks, We've got even more crazy, whacked out stories
- 2:38Speaker 1: from Shaolin. Next week, we're dropping an episode on Inspected
- 2:41Speaker 1: Deck and I was tied behind bars as a kid,
- 2:44Speaker 1: helped him develop his hip hop persona. And also we
- 2:45Speaker 1: got an episode on Cappadonna, the honorary tenth member of
- 2:48Speaker 1: the group who unknowingly introduced a federal informant into the
- 2:52Speaker 1: clan's inner circle at the time that they were being investigated.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So there's that, And yes, ODB is coming, so be patient.
- 2:59Speaker 1: We're going to get there soon enough. As you've probably noticed,
- 3:02Speaker 1: we're pausing this week, however, to give you a breather
- 3:05Speaker 1: and let you catch up with this series. To tide
- 3:08Speaker 1: you over, we're releasing the previously exclusive episode on Ringo Star.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Why Ringo? You ask, how does Ringo connect with Wu
- 3:16Speaker 1: Tang Clan? Well check out the episode to find out.
- 3:19Speaker 1: It might not be what you think. Definitely not as
- 3:21Speaker 1: easy a connection as Wu Tang to Bruce Lee, the
- 3:24Speaker 1: legendary martial arts artist and movie star, are one of
- 3:27Speaker 1: the many inspirations from the world of Kung Fu Onto Wu.
- 3:31Speaker 1: To celebrate that connection tomorrow, in Your Disgrace and Feed,
- 3:34Speaker 1: You've got an archive episode all about Bruce Lee from
- 3:36Speaker 1: bad Lands. That's the other show that I host. If
- 3:38Speaker 1: you don't know about that, so look out for that one.
- 3:41Speaker 1: All right. I want to circle back to my question
- 3:43Speaker 1: here at the top of the show, what are you
- 3:44Speaker 1: guys thinking about the serial last season? Should we do
- 3:46Speaker 1: more of these? And if so, what band or artist
- 3:49Speaker 1: would be perfect for this long form storytelling? Are there
- 3:53Speaker 1: other groups out there with multiple members that could warrant
- 3:55Speaker 1: their own episodes? Who do you have? Grateful Dead? That's
- 3:58Speaker 1: what I'm thinking, right? Do we do a whole season
- 4:00Speaker 1: on the Dead? Don't say the Stones, don't say the Beatles,
- 4:03Speaker 1: because we've exhausted those that subject matter almost completely to
- 4:07Speaker 1: this point. We've done a ton of episodes on those guys.
- 4:09Speaker 1: What other group could we do over an entire ten
- 4:16Speaker 1: episode series. I think there's some artists, single artists like
- 4:20Speaker 1: Rick James enough crime in his background, we could get
- 4:23Speaker 1: ten episodes of that. Johnny Cash we could probably get
- 4:25Speaker 1: ten episodes on. But I want to keep a group
- 4:27Speaker 1: focused if we can, and I want to do these
- 4:29Speaker 1: pretty infrequently, maybe one a year. I obviously am not
- 4:32Speaker 1: going to mess too much with the format, if at all,
- 4:35Speaker 1: with Disgraceland I like the anthology series we got going on,
- 4:38Speaker 1: but this Wu Tang thing may end up being a
- 4:40Speaker 1: one time event. I don't know, we may do more.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I'm trying to get some feedback here. So far, the
- 4:44Speaker 1: response has been positive, but I'm hearing about it mostly
- 4:48Speaker 1: on social media, and to be honest with you, guys,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I feel like we have more of a direct connection
- 4:52Speaker 1: here in the podcast over the phone line six one
- 4:56Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. So let
- 4:59Speaker 1: me know what you're thinking on this series. Do you
- 5:01Speaker 1: want more serialized seasons of Disgraceland. I'll leave me a voicemail,
- 5:06Speaker 1: just like this one from the three one seven.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Hey, it's from three one seven, and my name's you Gutt.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I wanted to call about your bon Jovie episode where
- 5:18Speaker 2: you were talking about, you know, not really digging it
- 5:21Speaker 2: when you were, you know, at that age and everything,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and I just thought it was great because I have
- 5:27Speaker 2: a funny little story about bon Jovie. So I feel
- 5:29Speaker 2: the same way as you. I was definitely more into
- 5:32Speaker 2: a lot of the different stuff at that time, more
- 5:36Speaker 2: of the punker type punk scene, but kind of hated
- 5:40Speaker 2: the whole hair band thing. And so now I am
- 5:43Speaker 2: actually married to a musician and he is in a
- 5:50Speaker 2: bon Jovi tribute band, so it's rather funny that it
- 5:54Speaker 2: circled back around. He is not the John bon Jovi person.
- 5:59Speaker 2: He's the actual keyboard player, David Bryan. So it's pretty
- 6:04Speaker 2: funny and we actually it's like a little inside joke
- 6:07Speaker 2: we have that. You know, I have to go listen
- 6:10Speaker 2: to bon Jovie now all the time. But I do
- 6:12Speaker 2: have a respect for it now that I'm older. It's
- 6:15Speaker 2: just kind of like what you said too, that it's
- 6:18Speaker 2: just a little more different now. I have a different
- 6:19Speaker 2: respect for it. You know, they were doing their thing,
- 6:21Speaker 2: they were having a good time, nothing wrong with that.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And you know, I'm fifty three now, so I kind
- 6:28Speaker 2: of look at it a lot differently. So I just
- 6:31Speaker 2: thought it was interesting and wanted to share that. So
- 6:34Speaker 2: and I enjoy your podcast so much. I listened to
- 6:36Speaker 2: it all the time when I'm driving, and I did
- 6:38Speaker 2: just discover bad Lands recently, so I've been getting into
- 6:42Speaker 2: that and just really enjoy it. I love all the
- 6:44Speaker 2: work you put into it and the spend that you
- 6:47Speaker 2: put on everything, So really enjoy it. Keep doing what
- 6:49Speaker 2: you're doing.
- 6:50Speaker 1: All right. Thanks for the voicemail. Evett. I feel like
- 6:53Speaker 1: we've stumbled upon a theme here amongst the Disgrace sound listeners,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and that is a sort of later in life open
- 7:00Speaker 1: mindedness toward music. We hate it as kids. I get
- 7:03Speaker 1: an event. Being married to a musician in a bon
- 7:06Speaker 1: Jovie tribute band as a former punk kid is definitely
- 7:09Speaker 1: an interesting turn of events. But yeah, I can't. I
- 7:14Speaker 1: can't say I would react any differently than you do
- 7:16Speaker 1: than you are. I should say, all right, let's check
- 7:19Speaker 1: out this voicemail from the eight to three.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, is Jamie from the eight o three down
- 7:25Speaker 3: here in South Carolina. First of all, love your podcast,
- 7:30Speaker 3: Absolutely love him. I have a very boring job and
- 7:33Speaker 3: you make it much more interesting. So thank you for
- 7:35Speaker 3: that one comment I wanted to make on the actors
- 7:40Speaker 3: playing people Bohemian Rhapsody. My oldest son was absolutely addicted
- 7:46Speaker 3: to the Queen live performance at Live Aid when he
- 7:49Speaker 3: was younger, like literally three four years old. That's what
- 7:52Speaker 3: he wanted to watch. He's now seventeen and is in musician,
- 7:56Speaker 3: but we watched that so many times and it's absolutely
- 8:01Speaker 3: astounding how shot by shot they recreated that. Raymon Malick,
- 8:08Speaker 3: first of all, is insanely good. I'm a Buddy mrcury
- 8:12Speaker 3: junkie and just insanely good. But just shot per shot,
- 8:17Speaker 3: that live a thing is outrageous. It's amazing. Thanks for
- 8:22Speaker 3: what you do, man, I keep it up rock a rolla.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Thanks, Jamie, You're welcome. This is a rap party question here,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but it's about music. So that's why we're gonna We're
- 8:31Speaker 1: gonna fuck with it here in this after party bonus episode.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I agree. I agree with you. For a movie, I
- 8:38Speaker 1: didn't love Bohemian Rhapsody. I thought the live aid scene though,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and Robbie Mallock's performance were both great. So there's that.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So I'm with you. Okay, let's check out this one
- 8:51Speaker 1: from Hollow in.
- 8:52Speaker 4: The nine.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yo.
- 8:55Speaker 4: What's up? Jakie Hollow from a nine to five six
- 8:59Speaker 4: responding to you saying that you want to know a
- 9:02Speaker 4: little bit more about your listeners.
- 9:04Speaker 3: So I did leave a message.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Before asking about horrorcore. Reason being I'm a horror core
- 9:11Speaker 4: artist from South Texas, been doing it for fourteen years.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Of course, not as thain stream, but there's a lot
- 9:20Speaker 4: of shit, a lot of shit that people have done
- 9:24Speaker 4: in this scene that would definitely make a great episode.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Not saying you got to focus on individuals, but as
- 9:32Speaker 4: a whole, there's a lot.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Of content there.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Brother. Yeah, So just leaving this message. Hopefully you get
- 9:38Speaker 4: back and you have a good one.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Rock and Roller.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Great to meet you, Hollow, Thanks for introducing yourself. I
- 9:44Speaker 1: admit I know next to nothing about horror core, but
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm here. I'm here to learn more. Man, all right,
- 9:50Speaker 1: so send me some links. I delved into some horror
- 9:53Speaker 1: core in the eminem episode, but you know, I think
- 9:58Speaker 1: it's those while ago, and it was in reference to
- 10:01Speaker 1: music that was from even a further while back. Uh,
- 10:05Speaker 1: so I want don't you send me some links? Let
- 10:07Speaker 1: me know what you're talking about. All right, Hall, thanks
- 10:09Speaker 1: for the call everyone, Thanks for the voicemails, Thanks for
- 10:11Speaker 1: the text. You know you know how to reach me.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You want to leave me a voicemail on anything we're
- 10:16Speaker 1: discussing here in Disgrace Cent. This week's question is who
- 10:20Speaker 1: would you want us to cover in another serialized season
- 10:22Speaker 1: if we did this again the Grateful Dead? Who we
- 10:25Speaker 1: talking about traveling Wilburies? I don't fucking know. It's not
- 10:29Speaker 1: traveling Wilburries. Who. What's the serialized season we're gonna do.
- 10:33Speaker 1: We're going to talk about one artist over ten episodes.
- 10:36Speaker 1: If we do this again, who the Who? Not the
- 10:38Speaker 1: Who the Dead? I kind of already did the Stones
- 10:41Speaker 1: and the Beatles, Like I mentioned, Zeth wants to do
- 10:43Speaker 1: new Edition, but I don't think that's gonna happen. Six
- 10:45Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. All right,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break. I'll be back after
- 10:49Speaker 1: this with the answers to your text and your dms.
- 11:12Speaker 1: All right, we are back. Let's dive into some texts here.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Seven six oh writes in Hey, how about an episode
- 11:19Speaker 1: on spring of from SSD and what went wrong with
- 11:23Speaker 1: the boys. So I'm not exactly sure. I don't know
- 11:25Speaker 1: much about SST. Being from Boston, that's a blind spot
- 11:27Speaker 1: for me. I've met Springer once before. He seemed like
- 11:31Speaker 1: a good guy. Uh did seem did seem you know, eccentric?
- 11:36Speaker 1: So I don't know. Maybe I'm into this. Maybe I'll
- 11:39Speaker 1: try and do a little do a little research here. Okay,
- 11:42Speaker 1: let's see we got the one here from the seven
- 11:44Speaker 1: to one eight says Hey, Jake Sarah from the seven
- 11:47Speaker 1: to one to three, But her number says seven one
- 11:49Speaker 1: to eight. Maybe that's a typo.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I have lots of answers to your questions, but I've
- 11:54Speaker 1: never written in until now because it's that important. Take
- 11:57Speaker 1: Chicago seriously, all caps. I love it thanks to my mama.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I got my love of all music from her. You
- 12:03Speaker 1: and I. Oh, she's talking about Chicago, the group. You
- 12:05Speaker 1: and I are close in age and have similar feelings
- 12:07Speaker 1: on most music.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Just you just.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Trust me on this. She says, I own an ice
- 12:11Speaker 1: cream shop in Houston called fat Cat Creamery. Please stop
- 12:14Speaker 1: by for you, everyone. Count Here's a pick of me
- 12:15Speaker 1: and Glenn Danzig for good measure, And there's an awesome
- 12:18Speaker 1: picture of Sarah here with Glenn. Glenn looks very happy
- 12:23Speaker 1: to be in this photograph with Sarah, says, uh, Sarah
- 12:26Speaker 1: was goan to say, this is the early nineties. I
- 12:28Speaker 1: think I was fourteen. I also met the dudes from
- 12:30Speaker 1: Typo Negative that night. Also says, please don't do an
- 12:32Speaker 1: episode on Rush. Don't make me sit through that love Sarah,
- 12:35Speaker 1: you got it, Sarah, No Rush episode, Okay, I understand fully.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Great picture of you and dan Zig. I appreciate it,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and I will take Chicago I'm assuming you're talking about Chicago,
- 12:46Speaker 1: the uh, the band, not the city, because I do
- 12:50Speaker 1: I do take I do definitely take the city seriously.
- 12:54Speaker 1: All right. This one from the six one four were
- 12:55Speaker 1: sent in a video. I can't exactly tell what the
- 12:57Speaker 1: hell is going on here, but it says, uh so
- 13:00Speaker 1: sixties Tripya go go. I'm on too Hot for TV
- 13:03Speaker 1: two on Springer if you dare to watch, ha ha
- 13:05Speaker 1: stripper wars. I was n what oh debt? All right,
- 13:09Speaker 1: not safe for work. Let's keep moving here. Oh okay
- 13:14Speaker 1: from the nine oh eight, Hey, Jake, just checking in
- 13:17Speaker 1: from Low Cut Connie. Chris from the nine to oh
- 13:19Speaker 1: eight in New Jersey. All right, Chris, appreciate this man
- 13:22Speaker 1: sends in a little photo here, recent photo of Low
- 13:25Speaker 1: Cut Connie live. Let's see this after party is being
- 13:29Speaker 1: recorded and it'll be out, uh the day after I
- 13:33Speaker 1: do my my special guest set with Low Cut Connie
- 13:36Speaker 1: in New York at the Blue Note. So, uh yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: I hope it went well, Sure it did? All right?
- 13:43Speaker 1: You got any text you want to send me six
- 13:45Speaker 1: one seven nine o six six six three eight on
- 13:47Speaker 1: anything Disgraceland related. You can also DM me at Disgraceland pod.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I got a lot of text. You're gonna keep on
- 13:55Speaker 1: rolling with these for a minute. Here it says, uh,
- 13:57Speaker 1: most overplayed, one and done LP obviously is Boston not
- 14:01Speaker 1: for me, but it is what it is. I'm not
- 14:02Speaker 1: sure where that answer comes from. Another one here, favorite
- 14:05Speaker 1: disco song Shakedown Street by the Graveful Dead. I can
- 14:08Speaker 1: get with that. I can get with that. Next one
- 14:11Speaker 1: says is Marshall Crenshaw Buddy Hawley. These are all from
- 14:13Speaker 1: the three one seven. I don't think Marshall Crenshaw is
- 14:15Speaker 1: Buddy Holly. I think Buddy Holly is dead. And then
- 14:18Speaker 1: it goes, but did Marshall Krenshaw play Buddy Holly in
- 14:21Speaker 1: a movie? Hmm? I think you might have. Actually, three
- 14:24Speaker 1: one seven goes on to say, a well, kallis Fredinghand
- 14:28Speaker 1: middle Finger can drive a woman. I don't know what
- 14:30Speaker 1: this guy's talking about. Three one seven, check back in
- 14:32Speaker 1: with me when you're when you're off the meds. What
- 14:35Speaker 1: else we got here from the six one two banned
- 14:38Speaker 1: Big influence versus low notoriety, question Mark Television, Who's could
- 14:42Speaker 1: do replacements? This is JC and the six five to
- 14:45Speaker 1: one Saint Paul, Minnesota going in deep with the Minnesota
- 14:50Speaker 1: Who's could do? Sorry, yeah, Minnesota, Minneapolis and replacements as
- 14:55Speaker 1: well television being from New York though, but also great
- 14:57Speaker 1: and yes, influential. I think this is in reference to
- 15:00Speaker 1: Velvet Underground episode that we did. Can't argue with any
- 15:03Speaker 1: of these. And then it goes on as a best
- 15:05Speaker 1: song about an actor, Martin Scorsese by King missl. I
- 15:08Speaker 1: remember that tune now I want to go hear it
- 15:10Speaker 1: the four to four to oh rights in Jake. This
- 15:12Speaker 1: is Devin from the four to four to oh living
- 15:14Speaker 1: in the seven oh three I saw by Heemith opened
- 15:16Speaker 1: up for Danzig this week and thought of Nergo's struggle
- 15:19Speaker 1: with Poland over blasphemy charges might be an interesting story.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about, but that does
- 15:24Speaker 1: sound interesting. And then there's a picture here. It says
- 15:26Speaker 1: here he is before he ripped up a bible. Come on, man,
- 15:29Speaker 1: spit blood into the crowd. Uh yeah, not my bag, baby,
- 15:33Speaker 1: not my bag. Let's move on. What else we got here?
- 15:36Speaker 4: All right?
- 15:37Speaker 1: One final text here from the three one two rights
- 15:39Speaker 1: and Hey, Jake, So I was wondering if you have
- 15:41Speaker 1: heard anything about the Pussycat Dolls and their founder, Robin Anton.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Apparently Robin had been involved in some shady business deals
- 15:48Speaker 1: with members, along with personal credit card debt, which also
- 15:50Speaker 1: happens to be the exact same amount she was suing
- 15:52Speaker 1: the lead singer of the group for breach of contract
- 15:54Speaker 1: for I'm fucking obsessed with all of your podcasts and
- 15:57Speaker 1: would love to hear that story Rock a Roller. Yeh three, one, two.
- 16:01Speaker 1: That's interesting. I have not heard anything about this, but
- 16:03Speaker 1: we're on it. I got another one here, another one
- 16:07Speaker 1: on Spring for the five. One oh? Can you do
- 16:09Speaker 1: a short episode on Spring of the Rise and Fall
- 16:11Speaker 1: of SSD? That's interesting, man, that's two. That's two on Springer. Hmm.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Something tells me you guys are coordinating. All right, I
- 16:19Speaker 1: said I wasn't gonna do more than one. No, I'm
- 16:21Speaker 1: not gonna do that because that's just too damn self serving.
- 16:24Speaker 1: All right, six one seven nine oh six sixty six
- 16:26Speaker 1: three eight, Send me a text, leave me a voicemail,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and take a quick quick break. I will be back
- 16:32Speaker 1: in a flash with the recommendations part. All right, we
- 16:50Speaker 1: are back, and this is the recommendation's part. The recommendations part,
- 16:52Speaker 1: the part where we recommend the things that need recommending.
- 16:54Speaker 1: The recommendation's part, and I'm gonna keep this tight. Okay,
- 16:56Speaker 1: At the top of this bonus episode, I mentioned a
- 16:58Speaker 1: number of artists that we discuss and our Wu Tang season.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So now I'm gonna give you specific recommendations for each. Okay.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Number one The dell Phonics. If I'm recommending one song
- 17:08Speaker 1: from the del Phonics as a gateway drug, it's didn't
- 17:11Speaker 1: I blow your mind this time? And that's because this
- 17:14Speaker 1: song left a singing mark on my heart after I
