- 0:07Speaker 1: All right, today's player guest is Tommy fam joining us
- 0:10Speaker 1: right now. Tommy, it's been a minute. It's great to
- 0:12Speaker 1: have you on. We always appreciate the time. I know
- 0:14Speaker 1: you're trying to figure out your next move. So how
- 0:16Speaker 1: you doing right now? How you holding up?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Mom?
- 0:21Speaker 3: I'm good, Frustrated, a little bit of everything, you know,
- 0:25Speaker 3: I'm at the same time, you just have to keep preparing,
- 0:29Speaker 3: keep training, you know, for the next opportunity. You know, uh,
- 0:35Speaker 3: preparation kind of always means opportunity.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Hold on, First of all, you you got no sleeves on.
- 0:41Speaker 4: I mean, we got it. Can we get a can
- 0:43Speaker 4: we can we get a get a gun?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Show man? Come on, I'm I'm in great shape. Let's
- 0:48Speaker 2: just say that I'm in great.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You guys, you know I've played with you and Cratzy,
- 0:54Speaker 3: so so you guys know the type of condition and
- 0:59Speaker 3: physicality I'm in.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Yeah, there's no doubt. There's no doubt. I know you
- 1:03Speaker 4: when you were just a young pup and you were
- 1:05Speaker 4: jack back then, and you're still jacked even though now
- 1:07Speaker 4: you're you're unk now, so you're an unk. So what's
- 1:11Speaker 4: it been like though? I mean, honestly, because you've had
- 1:13Speaker 4: a You've had a nice career and you've done a
- 1:15Speaker 4: lot of good things, and everyone that plays with you
- 1:17Speaker 4: talks about what a good dude you are. And then
- 1:20Speaker 4: here you are, has teams called, have teams called. I
- 1:23Speaker 4: know you just opted out of the Oriols, but have
- 1:24Speaker 4: teams called for you to come and say, hey, we
- 1:27Speaker 4: need a spot somewhere on her outfield.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Well, I opted out Friday, as you guys know, my
- 1:34Speaker 3: my opt out day was June twelfth, and you know,
- 1:38Speaker 3: basically the Orioles had till June twelfth to call me up.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I started to find you know, you know, as a ballplayer,
- 1:47Speaker 3: you know when once you once you find your rhythm
- 1:50Speaker 3: and you feel like you're getting going. That day for
- 1:53Speaker 3: me was not this past Sunday, of course, but the
- 1:56Speaker 3: Sunday before.
- 1:59Speaker 2: That's when I felt like.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Okay, that was the first day actually I squared up
- 2:04Speaker 3: a fastball. That's when I knew like, okay, I'm I'm
- 2:08Speaker 3: I'm getting there and I'm close. Then later on in
- 2:11Speaker 3: the week I kept barreling up more fastball, so I
- 2:14Speaker 3: knew I was ready.
- 2:17Speaker 2: You know, I batted two hundred and triple A.
- 2:19Speaker 3: But you know, I was at home for a month
- 2:23Speaker 3: basically just going to the cages. And you know, once
- 2:26Speaker 3: I found my timing, I'm I'm I was good.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I was I was better than the numbers showed.
- 2:32Speaker 3: We do have teams interested right now because they they
- 2:37Speaker 3: seem kind of how you know, I was starting to
- 2:39Speaker 3: get going and and quite honestly, there's teams that need
- 2:43Speaker 3: an outfielder right now. So you know, I'm i'm, I'm
- 2:47Speaker 3: training hard, staying ready because I believe I could still
- 2:50Speaker 3: help the team. Man, there's, uh, there's a lot of
- 2:52Speaker 3: things that I've worked on, and there's a lot of
- 2:55Speaker 3: things I know I could still do and I just
- 2:59Speaker 3: would love and not coportunity.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Do you feel like that opportunity has to be Okay,
- 3:05Speaker 5: go and try out again at Triple A basically how
- 3:07Speaker 5: I know it's not a tryout, but essentially, as a player,
- 3:10Speaker 5: you're trying to say, well, I am ready. Are you
- 3:14Speaker 5: waiting for a big league deal? Are you waiting for
- 3:16Speaker 5: a shorter opt out? Because last time was about a
- 3:19Speaker 5: month long opt out that you had, Like are you
- 3:22Speaker 5: looking for more like a hey, I'll go to Triple
- 3:25Speaker 5: A for ten days? What is your preference besides yeah,
- 3:29Speaker 5: I'm ready to go right to the big ones.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I don't mind going to Triple A, to be honest
- 3:35Speaker 3: with you, because you know, right now, essentially I haven't
- 3:40Speaker 3: played since Friday, but I know I'm still ready. It's
- 3:45Speaker 3: only been a few days, and I know I'm ready
- 3:48Speaker 3: when I left. You guys gotta you, guys, gotta kind of.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Fair with me right here.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You know, I didn't have a spring training this year.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I signed an opening day with the Mets. Then I
- 4:02Speaker 3: had about two weeks to get ready and I wasn't
- 4:07Speaker 3: really I wasn't ready with the Mets. You know, my
- 4:10Speaker 3: hand was kind of forced a little bit over there.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And on the Mets, you know, I had four starts
- 4:17Speaker 3: in two weeks considering you know, I didn't have a
- 4:21Speaker 3: spring training. That's that's a little tough, you guys. You
- 4:24Speaker 3: guys played. You guys know it. You know essentially, if
- 4:29Speaker 3: you didn't have a spring training, how long do you
- 4:32Speaker 3: think it would take, you know, you and AJ to
- 4:35Speaker 3: get ready.
- 4:37Speaker 4: You know, I agree. I want you to walk me
- 4:39Speaker 4: through that because I always went to spring training. I
- 4:41Speaker 4: never had that. So I want you to explain to
- 4:43Speaker 4: people at home how hard that is because we see pictures,
- 4:46Speaker 4: right Jordan Montgomery did it. There's a whole list of
- 4:49Speaker 4: pictures and position players last few years that were free
- 4:52Speaker 4: agents they signed late. Lake Snell, right. I think Matt
- 4:55Speaker 4: Chapman was another one. There's a whole list of them
- 4:57Speaker 4: that have signed late and then they struggle, struggle, and
- 5:01Speaker 4: it takes them almost the whole year to get back
- 5:03Speaker 4: to where they are. So is someone that now has
- 5:05Speaker 4: done it explain how hard that is to get through
- 5:08Speaker 4: without that six weeks of spring training.
- 5:12Speaker 2: It's not impossible, but you're right, it's not easy.
- 5:15Speaker 3: In twenty four when I signed late with the White Sox,
- 5:20Speaker 3: I was flying to Cressey Spot in Florida every week.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You know, basically they threw vibes on Friday. Every Friday.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I was going out to Cresse's. This year, I didn't
- 5:34Speaker 3: do that. I did it once and I got about
- 5:39Speaker 3: ten at bats.
- 5:40Speaker 2: When I was there.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I faced Sureser, the Casey Corbin and what's his name
- 5:50Speaker 3: on the Nationals Lttel. I faced those four guys and
- 5:56Speaker 3: I remember doing that and I was so tired. I
- 5:58Speaker 3: was just like, man, I'm not doing this this year.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I'm not flying out to Cressy's because I'm I'm in Vegas.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Right now, I'm not going coast to coast every week
- 6:08Speaker 3: just to face live, and you know, I'm kind of
- 6:11Speaker 3: on I'm on there the picture schedule. You know, if
- 6:13Speaker 3: they through Friday, then you know their next live might
- 6:17Speaker 3: be Wednesday. So uh, it's kind of hard for me
- 6:21Speaker 3: to do that. So after that first live, and I
- 6:26Speaker 3: believe it was late February when I did that, I
- 6:30Speaker 3: didn't I didn't see another live pitch until I reported
- 6:34Speaker 3: to the Mets spring training and you know, there I faced.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I had five lives, five days of lives before I
- 6:45Speaker 3: hopped in the Low A games and I played four
- 6:49Speaker 3: low A games. You know what's funny, my first nine
- 6:52Speaker 3: inning game was in the big leagues with the Mets.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You know, I didn't I didn't play a nine in
- 7:00Speaker 3: game until I.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Got to the big leagues.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I played like, uh, I was building up, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 3: five innings, five innings. Then I played at seven on
- 7:09Speaker 3: that Saturday, and then the Sunday before I flew out,
- 7:13Speaker 3: I played like four innings. So you know, I kind
- 7:17Speaker 3: of laugh at that because I said, yay, my first
- 7:21Speaker 3: nine innings was in the big leagues, in a big
- 7:23Speaker 3: league game.
- 7:24Speaker 2: But can physically I mean great. You know, I'm in
- 7:29Speaker 2: great shape.
- 7:30Speaker 3: It's just always getting your your your timing down and
- 7:34Speaker 3: your rhythm as a hitter. You know, like, let me
- 7:38Speaker 3: walk you through UH Triple A. Like I signed with
- 7:42Speaker 3: the Orioles. I had two days in UH in Sarasota.
- 7:47Speaker 2: The third day I showed up and they were like,
- 7:49Speaker 2: we don't have any lives.
- 7:51Speaker 3: And they told me the next lives were, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 3: four days from that Friday. And when they told me that,
- 8:01Speaker 3: they were like, you know, you could hop in extended
- 8:04Speaker 3: games and extended games. Those those young studs, man, they
- 8:12Speaker 3: throw a hundred and they don't necessarily know where it's going.
- 8:15Speaker 3: So you know, you don't feel comfortable in the box,
- 8:18Speaker 3: you know when someone like me, and the last thing
- 8:21Speaker 3: you want to do is get hit and get hurt
- 8:24Speaker 3: to where you know now you you know, you break
- 8:27Speaker 3: a bone in your wrist or whatever from an errant
- 8:32Speaker 3: throw and you're out. So I was just like, forget it,
- 8:39Speaker 3: I'll go to Triple A. I said, you know, the
- 8:41Speaker 3: first week might be ugly in Triple A because I
- 8:44Speaker 3: haven't played in a month. But I said, once I
- 8:47Speaker 3: get my timing, I'll be good. And you know it
- 8:50Speaker 3: took me. Took me about seven games to finally, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 3: get a better feel. Then once I got my fastball timing,
- 8:57Speaker 3: I man, I felt way more comfortable at the plate
- 9:01Speaker 3: because as a hitter, once you once you know you
- 9:05Speaker 3: can't get beat by a fastball, everything else is easier.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Yeah, you can never get in the box and extended
- 9:15Speaker 5: that's what. That's what Moran Davis, one of my one
- 9:17Speaker 5: of my good friends from early in the days of playing, said,
- 9:20Speaker 5: those are gunslingers. You can't be getting You can't be
- 9:22Speaker 5: getting in the box with gunslingers.
- 9:24Speaker 4: You never know if you're gonna get hit.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Man, there was a kid he was throwing.
- 9:29Speaker 3: He was throwing upper nineties to one hundred, and he
- 9:32Speaker 3: threw two fastballs up and in for balls, and he
- 9:35Speaker 3: was breaking off sliders for strikes lowing away, and I
- 9:38Speaker 3: was just like, man, I don't I don't know if
- 9:41Speaker 3: this is intentional or if you know. Right now, he
- 9:44Speaker 3: just can't locate. He can't throw his heater for strikes,
- 9:48Speaker 3: so it's uncomfortable.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I mean, you guys know it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square and they've got

- 10:54Speaker 5: When you were at the Mets, you're talking about Okay,
- 10:56Speaker 5: I didn't get enough at bats. I got the lives
- 10:59Speaker 5: and then I got twelve and low A. Do you
- 11:02Speaker 5: feel like you were able to communicate to the Mets
- 11:05Speaker 5: you know what, I might not be ready here or
- 11:07Speaker 5: is it one of those things that you're like, I'm
- 11:09Speaker 5: a non roster guy, they're calling me up to the
- 11:11Speaker 5: big leagues. I just got to try to figure it
- 11:14Speaker 5: out on my own or was it something that you
- 11:16Speaker 5: did communicate that with them?
- 11:19Speaker 2: No, I mean kind of.
- 11:20Speaker 3: How that phone call went with you know, my my
- 11:23Speaker 3: agency and the Mets was you know, kind of like
- 11:26Speaker 3: a force hand.
- 11:28Speaker 2: But you know, I thought I would find my time.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I knew I wasn't quite there, but I thought, you know,
- 11:36Speaker 3: from what they were telling my agency is you know,
- 11:39Speaker 3: I was going to get a little bit of run
- 11:42Speaker 3: and that that didn't necessarily happen. So, you know, to
- 11:46Speaker 3: not to not fully have your timing and be put
- 11:49Speaker 3: in a platoon.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Situation is really tough. It's really tough, you know. But
- 11:56Speaker 2: now I would say, now that I have my timing,
- 12:01Speaker 2: being put in.
- 12:02Speaker 3: A platoon sage situation would be a lot different because
- 12:07Speaker 3: I'm you know, I have my I know, I have
- 12:09Speaker 3: my fastball timing.
- 12:11Speaker 2: So it's just you know, different circumstances.
- 12:14Speaker 3: And you know, you got to remember when I joined
- 12:17Speaker 3: the Mets, it was a situation where, you know, kind
- 12:22Speaker 3: of panic mode. You know, we the team was kind
- 12:25Speaker 3: of spiraling. You know, when I joined the Mets, we
- 12:29Speaker 3: they might have lost you know, six of the past
- 12:31Speaker 3: seven games something like that. And and you know I
- 12:35Speaker 3: was a part of that that stretch where you know,
- 12:38Speaker 3: we we lost twelve in a row. So it's just,
- 12:42Speaker 3: you know, things happened just didn't work out for It
- 12:45Speaker 3: didn't work out for me.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah, not right, not right spot, not right time.
- 12:49Speaker 5: When you're seeing other right handed hitters in the outfield
- 12:53Speaker 5: that teams need badly, what do you feel like teams
- 12:57Speaker 5: are missing when they're going out and getting those guys.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Not thrown shade at any one particular team or player,
- 13:03Speaker 5: but what are they missing that you feel like you add.
- 13:10Speaker 3: The game has changed in a sense from what I've seen.
- 13:14Speaker 3: You know, I've talked to coaches about this. I mean
- 13:18Speaker 3: even I even talked to you know, front offices. I
- 13:22Speaker 3: asked them to be completely honest with me. Now there's
- 13:27Speaker 3: team teams that are going into the season that just
- 13:31Speaker 3: are saying, hey, you know, we're we're we're rebuilding. We're
- 13:35Speaker 3: not looking to add because we're rebuilding.
- 13:38Speaker 2: And then you know, you.
- 13:40Speaker 3: See right now a lot of these rebuilding teams.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Are actually playing really good.
- 13:46Speaker 3: So if you look at that, what if they would
- 13:52Speaker 3: have possibly added You know, because I'm a fan of
- 13:55Speaker 3: the game at the end of the day, I love baseball,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and you know, I'm also a player. If every team
- 14:03Speaker 3: was in it to win at the beginning and at
- 14:06Speaker 3: the beginning of the off season, you know, how much
- 14:09Speaker 3: better would would some of these teams be that are
- 14:13Speaker 3: in first or second place in the division this year.
- 14:17Speaker 3: A lot of this, too, is a byproduct of this
- 14:20Speaker 3: current CBA.
- 14:22Speaker 2: A lot of a lot.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Of people, fans and people in the game really don't
- 14:27Speaker 3: understand it. But you know, I've been at the negotiation
- 14:30Speaker 3: table twice now with the owners. A lot of this
- 14:34Speaker 3: is a byproduct of the CBA, and there's nothing really
- 14:40Speaker 3: I can do until that gets fixed. You know, there's
- 14:43Speaker 3: been you know, I've been a free agent since twenty two.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Twenty two was my first year as a free agent.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I've had teams tell me no in free agency that
- 14:54Speaker 3: they're sticking, they're going to run with the young guy,
- 14:57Speaker 3: which is perfectly fine, only for them to try to
- 15:00Speaker 3: trade for me or trade for me at the deadline.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So you know, just think about that, Tommy.
- 15:10Speaker 4: What's the fix though, what's the fix? Because all we
- 15:13Speaker 4: hear is salary cap and the young guys need to
- 15:15Speaker 4: be paid more. And I've been fighting, I've said this
- 15:18Speaker 4: for years that the middle class is kind of you
- 15:20Speaker 4: have your top stars, and the more the minimum goes up, right,
- 15:23Speaker 4: the more that the teams want to rely on the
- 15:25Speaker 4: young guys. So you squeeze out that middle class, the
- 15:28Speaker 4: veteran guy, the guys when I first came up to
- 15:30Speaker 4: the fifteen year, ten year, twelve year vet that will
- 15:34Speaker 4: pay play for it, you know's I'll use three million,
- 15:37Speaker 4: four million, five whatever whatever that middle area is. But
- 15:40Speaker 4: teams like we don't value that experience. We don't value that.
- 15:43Speaker 4: We value paying a young guy seven hundred and fifty
- 15:46Speaker 4: eight hundred grand and we'll pay our stars. So what's
- 15:48Speaker 4: the fix. Is there a fix that can be found
- 15:50Speaker 4: in the CBA that's up this year?
- 15:55Speaker 3: I propose certain things last CBA man, and it was
- 15:59Speaker 3: shot down. You know, that's something I'll talk to you guys, privately.
- 16:04Speaker 3: You know, I don't want to dish out the players' problems.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You know, I feel like I feel like the players
- 16:12Speaker 3: lost a lot of leverage, you know, to be dead
- 16:15Speaker 3: honest with you, you know, I've been there. I've seen
- 16:19Speaker 3: the negotiations after the twenty sixteen season and after the
- 16:23Speaker 3: twenty twenty one season. You know, things were really in
- 16:27Speaker 3: the plalayer's hands, really in our favor, and we gave
- 16:32Speaker 3: a lot of strengths up. So you know that they'll
- 16:39Speaker 3: say that the game is going younger. What we're seeing
- 16:43Speaker 3: now is more players are.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Able to develop in the big leagues.
- 16:47Speaker 3: You know, back in the day, when I came up
- 16:51Speaker 3: in Triple from Triple A on the Cardinals, we were
- 16:56Speaker 3: really developed.
- 16:59Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:59Speaker 3: We we had to do a lot to get called up.
- 17:03Speaker 3: And also when we got our opportunity in the big leagues,
- 17:06Speaker 3: there wasn't much of a leash, you know, back in
- 17:09Speaker 3: the day.
- 17:10Speaker 2: You know, if I.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Struggle for two weeks in the big leagues, I got
- 17:12Speaker 3: sitting down. That's just that's just how it was back then.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And today it's not necessarily like that. Guys have have
- 17:20Speaker 3: such a long leash that you know, teams are willing
- 17:26Speaker 3: to ride with that, and and I think I think
- 17:29Speaker 3: it's costing wins as a as a veteran in the game.
- 17:33Speaker 2: It's it's frustrating too because.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Just think about you know, when I was on the
- 17:40Speaker 3: White Sox, for instance, you know how many guys that
- 17:42Speaker 3: we were calling guys up from Double A that weren't ready,
- 17:45Speaker 3: And the coaches were frustrated about that that, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 3: because they knew that the kids weren't ready. So you
- 17:55Speaker 3: would see guys get called up who weren't ready, then
- 17:57Speaker 3: you know, you burn through their options. And now now
- 18:00Speaker 3: these guys are are in Triple A without any options,
- 18:03Speaker 3: and it's it's hard for them to get get back
- 18:05Speaker 3: into the league just from you know, circumstances. But it's
- 18:11Speaker 3: how it is, you know, you know, you ask how
- 18:14Speaker 3: I can help a team. I feel like, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 3: last year, I'm made humongous strides defensively, and I mean
- 18:22Speaker 3: everyone saw that.
- 18:24Speaker 2: From the previous year.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Then hitting, I control the strike zone really well and
- 18:32Speaker 3: with the ABS system, that's.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Only going to benefit me, you know.
- 18:37Speaker 3: And I feel like I've made improvement with my swing
- 18:41Speaker 3: and vision that can only help me perform even better
- 18:46Speaker 3: in Triple A. Once I once I got everything down,
- 18:48Speaker 3: you know, I hit four home runs in like the
- 18:51Speaker 3: past ten games. I'm I'm barreling the ball up like
- 18:55Speaker 3: crazy right now, and and I got my fastball timing,
- 18:59Speaker 3: so I'm I'm ready.

- 19:19Speaker 1: want to go with seakeek. There's so many tickets to

- 19:28Speaker 5: big league games, all in my area, and I want
- 19:31Speaker 5: to know exactly what it looks like. And I also
- 19:33Speaker 5: want the best deal, So I'm looking for the green,
- 19:36Speaker 5: not the red.

- 19:39Speaker 1: deals on the app. Of course, we have the code

- 20:00Speaker 1: You can use that code later.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Thank you, see geek.
- 20:04Speaker 5: All right, there's one thing that Tommy fan wants to do,
- 20:06Speaker 5: and that's win. Did you see the whole Jose Camiero
- 20:09Speaker 5: thing with the pitch clock and him kind of manipulating
- 20:13Speaker 5: it and then the other team getting pissed.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Did you see that?
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, that's his thing. You know, that's that's
- 20:22Speaker 3: the only way I could put it. If if if
- 20:25Speaker 3: you don't like it, just just just get him out. Ultimately,
- 20:28Speaker 3: success is the best revenge, you know, of course, it's
- 20:32Speaker 3: it's gonna it's gonna make one side of the of
- 20:35Speaker 3: the game mad more than the other. You know, just
- 20:39Speaker 3: if you don't like it, get him out.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:41Speaker 3: It's like, you know, it's kind of one of those
- 20:43Speaker 3: situations where you know, if a guy pimps the home run.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I get it. You know you're mad.
- 20:48Speaker 3: But ultimately, you know, if you come back and he
- 20:50Speaker 3: strike him out and punt and get him out the
- 20:53Speaker 3: rest of the series, who has.
- 20:55Speaker 2: The last laugh. It's one of those things.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Tommy. How many did you tap your helmet? You're in
- 21:01Speaker 4: triple A? How many times have you been doing this?
- 21:03Speaker 4: If you was hitting in the big leagues right now,
- 21:05Speaker 4: with the zone as small as it is, how good
- 21:08Speaker 4: were you out of Did you get to tap your
- 21:09Speaker 4: helmet down a triple A? Very much?
- 21:12Speaker 3: I didn't do it just from the circumstance of the game,
- 21:15Speaker 3: Like I was mindful of that. There was one time
- 21:19Speaker 3: I wanted to do it, and it wouldn't have made
- 21:22Speaker 3: it a difference at all in the ad path.
- 21:25Speaker 2: So I taken consideration that.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Now, if if it was like a situation where I
- 21:32Speaker 3: felt like the umpire missed a call and i'm and
- 21:35Speaker 3: he punches me out.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Then that that that's that's different to me.
- 21:38Speaker 3: But but altering the count, you know, from you know.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Maybe one one or one oh to one one.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Or I'm sorry, one oh to two oh to one
- 21:52Speaker 3: one like that, that's not much of a difference in
- 21:54Speaker 3: triple A for me, like it, it has to be
- 21:57Speaker 3: a pretty obvious call missed, you know, like I'm seeing
- 22:04Speaker 3: guys tap their helmet and they're missing by point one
- 22:08Speaker 3: of an inch like that, that tells me, you truly.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Don't know the zone, you know, like, it has to
- 22:14Speaker 2: be a big miss for me.
- 22:16Speaker 3: If the umpire misses by zero point one point two
- 22:19Speaker 3: of an inch, that come on, that's that's that's not
- 22:22Speaker 3: going to kill me, you know what I'm saying.
- 22:25Speaker 2: But if it's a if it's a.
- 22:28Speaker 3: A call where you know, I'm walking back to the
- 22:31Speaker 3: dugout or I'm getting on first, yeah, that then and
- 22:33Speaker 3: it's a big miss call you know, by zero point
- 22:37Speaker 3: five or you know greater that, then that's a difference
- 22:41Speaker 3: maker for me.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Yeah, the point one is to me or luck? Right,
- 22:45Speaker 4: You're like, literally, I mean that's just that's that's luck.
- 22:47Speaker 4: That's literally you're flipping a coin and hoping.
- 22:50Speaker 3: I've seen so much of that then, I've seen so
- 22:52Speaker 3: many catchers on both sides have their helmet on balls,
- 22:57Speaker 3: and I'm like, how are you tapping your.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Helmet on that? You're right playing at home plate?
- 23:00Speaker 3: You should see that perfect especially east to west, north
- 23:05Speaker 3: to south.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I could I could give you a little.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Bit more leniency, but east to west, like, how are
- 23:11Speaker 3: you you can't miss big east to west like you
- 23:15Speaker 3: should be able to see where the ball hits that corner.
- 23:18Speaker 2: You're right behind the plate perfectly. Okay.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Sometimes we go blind, Tommy. Sometimes we just close our
- 23:23Speaker 4: eyes and we hope.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I mean well too.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You know, these guys are throwing a hundred with movement now,
- 23:28Speaker 3: So it's the game. The game is has gotten better
- 23:32Speaker 3: in a sense. The thing I did notice in triple
- 23:36Speaker 3: A is, uh, you know, it's kind of like back
- 23:41Speaker 3: back in the day. You know, whoever hits the fastball
- 23:43Speaker 3: the best, you know, that's that guy's a big league
- 23:46Speaker 3: Whoever could hit the fastball and control the zone, that
- 23:49Speaker 3: guy's gonna have some success in the big leagues. And
- 23:52Speaker 3: what I saw was a lot of guys aren't doing
- 23:55Speaker 3: that in triple A.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Wow, okay, all right, we just yeah, we just had
- 24:00Speaker 4: I know you played with with the Diamondbacks and could
- 24:03Speaker 4: tell Marte for a little while. But I have a
- 24:05Speaker 4: question for you. We had this conversation and there was
- 24:08Speaker 4: a report that he didn't play. He asked not to
- 24:11Speaker 4: play against Sotani. We had it cleared up a little
- 24:13Speaker 4: bit where he actually asked the night before and Tory said,
- 24:15Speaker 4: I'll play to night and I'll give you tomorrow off.
- 24:17Speaker 4: You know, katl Marte, you played with him. Also, I
- 24:21Speaker 4: played with you, and you know, back when I played
- 24:23Speaker 4: with you, it was a different era, and if you
- 24:25Speaker 4: asked for a day off, guys were going to give
- 24:27Speaker 4: you a little bit of grief about it, right, They'd say, oh,
- 24:29Speaker 4: you're scared to face this guy. You know, Matt Holliday
- 24:31Speaker 4: would have said, Hey, I don't want to play against
- 24:34Speaker 4: Johnny Quato. You know somebody was gonna Wayne Ryder. Matt
- 24:38Speaker 4: Hardoner is going to say, oh, man, what's the matter.
- 24:40Speaker 4: You're scared of that guy. That's just the way things work, right,
- 24:42Speaker 4: Not not that he was, but you know how it is.
- 24:45Speaker 4: So you know, kud tell Marte, give us your take
- 24:47Speaker 4: on ka tell Marte because it's a weird dynamic of
- 24:51Speaker 4: he's your best he can be your best player. He
- 24:53Speaker 4: could change the game of one swing. But I don't know.
- 24:56Speaker 4: It's a weird dynamic for me.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Yeah, back and it was different. Man.
- 25:03Speaker 3: If if if I asked to sit, you know it,
- 25:08Speaker 3: they they assumed I was hurt. Now, you know, guys
- 25:13Speaker 3: get mental breaks to sit. You know, I wasn't brought
- 25:17Speaker 3: up that way. I had to learn to play herd
- 25:20Speaker 3: and I still play hurt. You know, that's just a
- 25:23Speaker 3: part of me now. Katl is a great friend of mine. Honestly,
- 25:27Speaker 3: you know, he was the when when I got traded
- 25:30Speaker 3: over to Arizona. I would go over his house, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 3: just after a game, and you know we will spend
- 25:38Speaker 3: time together playing dominoes and doing whatever he his family
- 25:43Speaker 3: cooking for me. Like, we developed a really close relationship.
- 25:48Speaker 3: So you know, I'm gonna be biased here because of
- 25:52Speaker 3: my relationship with Katel.
- 25:55Speaker 2: He's a stud player.
- 25:59Speaker 3: And if anything, you know, he's battled through a lot
- 26:01Speaker 3: of injuries in his past. You know, I would want
- 26:04Speaker 3: to make sure he's happy rather than than pissed off,
- 26:09Speaker 3: you know, because you know, when he's right, he could
- 26:13Speaker 3: carry He could carry your team. He carried us that
- 26:16Speaker 3: that Philly series in uh in twenty three in the playoffs.
- 26:21Speaker 3: You know, if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have
- 26:23Speaker 3: got past Philly.
- 26:24Speaker 2: That's just the truth.
- 26:26Speaker 3: The first five games none of us were hitting, but
- 26:28Speaker 3: could Tell could Tell carried us.
- 26:31Speaker 2: He kept us in that series.
- 26:32Speaker 3: So you know, the and and the seasons he's given
- 26:35Speaker 3: the Diamondbacks. If anything, man, I feel like the organization
- 26:39Speaker 3: owes him a lot.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I know, they just broke him off.
- 26:42Speaker 3: So you could say, well, you know, we we paid
- 26:46Speaker 3: him for you know, what he's done. But the player
- 26:50Speaker 3: has always given more to the organization than the organization
- 26:54Speaker 3: gives to the player. That's just the way it works out.
- 26:58Speaker 3: As athletes, you know, you're usually giving them back, you know,
- 27:02Speaker 3: two to three x on the return than what they're
- 27:07Speaker 3: giving you.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a call. Yeah, I think.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Katel has has has given that organization way more.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I mean, you can look it up.
- 27:17Speaker 3: You know the seasons he's produced, It's given that organization
- 27:21Speaker 3: X amount of dollars. Because at the end of the day,
- 27:23Speaker 3: this is a business and and and you we as
- 27:27Speaker 3: players and the fans have to always remember that this
- 27:30Speaker 3: is a business. The organizations are running this more soever
- 27:35Speaker 3: like a business, and you got to treat it that way.
- 27:40Speaker 3: And I mean that that's just kind of kind of
- 27:43Speaker 3: where I am.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Being being home right now.
- 27:47Speaker 3: It's it's not like, you know, I'm I'm worth I'm
- 27:50Speaker 3: going to cost the organization a lot of money. You know,
- 27:52Speaker 3: I was signed for one point too with the Orioles,
- 27:55Speaker 3: and and that's a that is pro rated.
- 27:58Speaker 2: So what what would I get half for that?
- 28:01Speaker 3: I'm I'm basically I'm paying for playing for minimum right now.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I think that is extremely.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Valuable as well for someone like me, you know, knowing
- 28:14Speaker 3: how many teams right now need an outfielder and and
- 28:17Speaker 3: how how little bargaining and I have, So just that's
- 28:22Speaker 3: just something to throw in.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I agree.
- 28:25Speaker 4: By the way, you can be biased about a former teammate,
- 28:27Speaker 4: I listen, if he's your friend, I want That's why
- 28:31Speaker 4: I asked you the question, because you know him better
- 28:32Speaker 4: than I know him. You know him better and Eric
- 28:34Speaker 4: knows him, you know better than anybody. So if you
- 28:35Speaker 4: want to be biased towards a guy like him or
- 28:37Speaker 4: hate him, it's great to hear that you like this
- 28:39Speaker 4: guy and you know what he's all about. That's why
- 28:41Speaker 4: we asked the question.
- 28:42Speaker 2: So thank you, and I mean it.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I'm sorry, man, it's just you know, as as a teammate,
- 28:48Speaker 3: you know, when someone you know welcomes you over to
- 28:51Speaker 3: their home, you know, to eat and you know, spend
- 28:54Speaker 3: time with his family. That that says a lot to me.
- 28:57Speaker 3: As for as a person, you know for.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, yeah, no, I've heard good things there so
- 29:04Speaker 1: and he's a superstar, right And also yeah, for you, Tommy,
- 29:07Speaker 1: there's a lot of teams that I mean watching games
- 29:10Speaker 1: every night. Can use some right handed hitting outfield help,
- 29:13Speaker 1: so we'll be watching. We're hoping you latch back on.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Thanks for sharing the story a little bit with us,
- 29:19Speaker 1: and we'll catch up with you soon. Really appreciate the.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Time you know that. Thanks fellas, thanks for having me.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 29:25Speaker 1: That's Tommy fam
