Today we have a tiny grammar topic — prepositions. Luna: Prepositions? Like 'in' and 'on'? Lucas: Exactly. In German, 'in' means 'in', 'auf' means 'on', and 'unter' means 'under'. Let's start with 'in'. Luna: In. Sounds just like English. Lucas: Right. But we use it in sentences like 'Der Apfel ist in der Schüssel.' The apple is in the bowl. Luna: Der Apfel ist in der Schüssel. Lucas: Perfect. Now 'auf' — on. 'Der Apfel ist auf dem Tisch.' The apple is on the table. Luna: Der Apfel ist auf dem Tisch. I remember 'der Tisch' from the furniture episode. Lucas: Nice callback! And 'unter' — under. 'Die Katze ist unter dem Stuhl.' The cat is under the chair. Luna: Die Katze ist unter dem Stuhl. That's cute. Lucas: Let's practice all three. Repeat after me: in. Luna: in. Lucas: auf. Luna: auf. Lucas: unter. Luna: unter. Lucas: Now sentences. 'Der Apfel ist in der Schüssel.' Luna: Der Apfel ist in der Schüssel. Lucas: Good. 'Der Apfel ist auf dem Tisch.' Luna: Der Apfel ist auf dem Tisch. Lucas: And 'Die Katze ist unter dem Stuhl.' Luna: Die Katze ist unter dem Stuhl. Ooh, tricky — 'dem Stuhl' not 'der Stuhl'? Lucas: Yes! Because 'unter' takes the dative case. So 'der Tisch' becomes 'dem Tisch', 'der Stuhl' becomes 'dem Stuhl'. But don't worry too much about that now. Luna: Okay, so I'll just memorize the phrases first. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a tiny scene. Imagine you're at home. Where is your phone? Luna: Uhh... 'Mein Telefon ist auf dem Tisch.' Lucas: Sehr gut! And where is your cat? Luna: Die Katze ist unter dem Bett. Oh, 'Bett' is neuter — das Bett — so 'unter dem Bett'. Lucas: That's it.
