- 0:01If you want to pull through some of the wisdom of your
- 0:06ancestors,
- 0:07one of the most richest and vividus ways to do this is to
- 0:12practice ancestral plant medicine.
- 0:25Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You're Here,
- 0:29a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:33reconnect yourself, and remember the most important thing of all,
- 0:38why you're here. I'm Asia Suler, author,
- 0:42earth intuitive. And in this episode today,
- 0:47I'm going to revisit one of my favorite topics,
- 0:50and that is ancestral plant medicine.
- 0:55So I actually had the intention to record a new video
- 1:00podcast for this week. And instead,
- 1:04my daughter and I, as well as my girlfriend,
- 1:07we all got super sick with some sort of virus,
- 1:11some sort of viral thing, and we just got absolutely laid out.
- 1:14You might still hear it in my voice right now. And it felt like,
- 1:19well, A,
- 1:20it felt a little early to have this kind of vibrant virus in the
- 1:25season. I know we're entering flu and cold season,
- 1:28but it still felt a little bit unfair to immediately jump into
- 1:33full-blown fever virus mode.
- 1:37But it also felt like, I don't know, in some ways,
- 1:41a very fitting beginning to this month of October where there
- 1:46is just this opportunity to see what's going on
- 1:51underneath the surface, to peel back the veil.
- 1:53There's something about being sick that is quite psychedelic,
- 1:56especially when you are feverish,
- 1:59and it's been giving me the opportunity to practice
- 2:04ancestral herbalism.
- 2:06So every time I've gone ahead and reached for the elderberry
- 2:11syrup, that's exactly what I've been doing.
- 2:14Every time I've made me or my daughter a cup of sage tea to help clear
- 2:19our sad little sore throats, that's also what I've been doing.
- 2:23And it just feels like such a potent time to reconnect
- 2:28in this way. And in this audio recording that we're about to revisit,
- 2:33I talk about three specific ways to start working with the herbs that
- 2:38your ancestors were connected with.
- 2:40I also talk about why ancestral herbalism in particular is
- 2:45so potent.
- 2:47I'm a really big fan of working with the plants exactly where you are,
- 2:50but there's a special magic to working with the plants that were near and dear
- 2:55to your ancestors.
- 2:57And it really feels like that magic comes online in such a
- 3:02particular way in this moment of the year,
- 3:06especially for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere as we are entering fall.
- 3:11Whether we realize it or not, a lot of us are actually already practicing.
- 3:16We are already having some ancestral plant practices.
- 3:21I remember realizing this at some point.
- 3:23I grew up in a very suburban environment and I loved the decorations of
- 3:29the hay with the decorative gourds on it and the pumpkins and
- 3:34all of that.
- 3:34And it really wasn't until I got older and I started having my own garden and
- 3:39harvesting things and bringing them in that I realized, oh,
- 3:41there's a reason why we have these decorations of pumpkins and apples and hay.
- 3:46It's because this is the time of the year when you are making sure you have
- 3:51hay for the next season, hay for the winter for your animals.
- 3:56It's when you are harvesting the apples,
- 3:57it's when you are taking the pumpkins from off the ground and you're bringing
- 4:02them close to your house or just right within your house or wherever it is you
- 4:06store them.
- 4:07And so these things that we think of our decorations are actually ancestral
- 4:13plant practices. And I just absolutely love this,
- 4:16that it's almost like this time of the year we don't even realize that we are
- 4:21engaging in these practices that bring us close to our own ancestors,
- 4:25that bring us close to...
- 4:27And what I talk about in this audio is bring us close to the ancestors who had
- 4:32really deep, meaningful,
- 4:34harmonious and profound relationships with their environment.
- 4:40So that's who I'm talking about when I talk about connecting with the ancestors.
- 4:44And I have seen basically every year,
- 4:49my entire life, that when the veil starts to thin,
- 4:51as I explored in the last episode, our ancestors just come close.
- 4:57They're in our dreams. We sense them around us.
- 5:00We start doing these things that we don't even think about like brewing
- 5:04chamomile tea or putting more cinnamon when we're baking and we don't even
- 5:08realize that we are touching this deep root in time.
- 5:13So if you want to pull in,
- 5:17pull through some of the wisdom of your ancestors,
- 5:22these earth-based, wise ancestors,
- 5:26if you want to pull that thread through into your life now,
- 5:31I think one of the most richest and vividus ways to do this
- 5:36is to practice some ancestral plant medicine.
- 5:42So let's go ahead and drop into this audio now and
- 5:47we'll explore these three super accessible ways to start working with the
- 5:51medicines of your ancestors.
- 5:57Autumn is the classic time of the year to connect with those who've passed on
- 6:02from the Day of the Dead Festival in Mexico to Obon in Japan
- 6:07or the Celtic holiday of Samhain. In autumn,
- 6:11we have the ability to communicate with those who came before us.
- 6:15As someone of European settler descent,
- 6:17I wasn't always connected to my ancestors until I was,
- 6:23and I found that there's actually a direct link between my herbal practice and
- 6:27my ancestors. If you're anything like me,
- 6:31this topic of ancestor work might come up and you might feel a little bit of
- 6:34resistance. So I know for myself,
- 6:37as someone who is of European descent and is really distanced at this point in
- 6:41time from the lands that I'm originally from,
- 6:45I had a lot of feelings around ancestor work.
- 6:48Mix in there the history of oppression and colonialism that took
- 6:53place throughout much of the colonized parts of the world and as part of the
- 6:57Western imagination,
- 6:58it can feel really intimidating to want to connect with those who came before
- 7:02us. So I want to be specific here when I'm talking about this idea of ancestral
- 7:06herbalism.
- 7:08When I'm speaking of the ability to connect to those who came before us to
- 7:12deepen our herbal practice,
- 7:14what I'm talking to is the idea of connecting into those from your lineage
- 7:19who were deeply connected to the plants,
- 7:22those who had really vibrant,
- 7:24intact communities and knew how to speak to the plants and how to work with
- 7:29them for healing. All of our ancestors worked with plants. If they didn't,
- 7:34we wouldn't be here,
- 7:35but some of our ancestors were more connected to plants than others.
- 7:39So when I speak of doing this kind of ancestor work to connect to
- 7:44those who came before you who really know how to work with the plants,
- 7:48what I'm speaking of is connecting with those who really were plant
- 7:53medicine people,
- 7:54those who lived in a culture where they saw the world around them as
- 7:59alive. Now,
- 8:01some of us might be farther away from this mindset than others.
- 8:06I know for me,
- 8:08I'm probably at least a thousand years away from ancestors who are truly living
- 8:12in an animistic viewpoint. That said,
- 8:16it's in all of our blood.
- 8:18All of us have ancestors who were indigenous of a place.
- 8:23And when we learn how to connect to them during this autumn time where the veil
- 8:26is thin,
- 8:27we can actually ask for their help and their guidance to deepen our practice
- 8:31with the plants and our life path in general.
- 8:34When we can connect with our well ancestors, we can receive their blessings,
- 8:39their knowledge and their wisdom. But for me,
- 8:42it's been a very essential viewpoint to actually start to see ancestors as
- 8:47a way to connect to plants and plants as a way to connect to the ancestors.
- 8:52So I've had the privilege now of being able to visit a couple places in the
- 8:57world that my family are actually from,
- 8:59and I was amazed when I actually got my body on that landscape,
- 9:03how much I resonated with those places.
- 9:06And I was also amazed to see that some of the plants that I had an innate
- 9:09connection to were growing there in proliferation and were actually ancient
- 9:14parts of the culture that had lived there for thousands of years.
- 9:19For example, when I went to Ireland and I met the hawthorns that lived there,
- 9:23it was like I understood for the first time why I've always been so deeply drawn
- 9:28to this plant,
- 9:30this plant that is known to be a gatekeeper to the realms of magic and the fairy
- 9:34realm, a heart healer and a grief assuager.
- 9:38When I met the hawthorns there,
- 9:40something deeply clicked into place inside of me. That said,
- 9:44you don't have to go to your place of origin in order to make these connections.
- 9:50You can do a simple research project to find out what were the important plants
- 9:55of your ancestors, your land-based ancestors.
- 9:59So this could be ceremonial plants, food plants, or medicine plants,
- 10:04and try connecting with these plants, this autumn,
- 10:07to open a gateway to communicate with your ancestors,
- 10:10the ones who are very well vibrant in spirit,
- 10:13who knew how to live in harmony with the earth so that you can start actually
- 10:18bringing this knowledge back into existence now for yourself and the lineages
- 10:23to come.
- 10:24So a couple ideas to incorporate this practice into your rituals this fall.
- 10:29One is to actually make a dish for your ancestors to give as an offering
- 10:34based on what would've been their favorite foods, their ancestral foods.
- 10:38Not only does this connect you to the plants,
- 10:40but it helps you connect to the ancestors through this bridge of the plants.
- 10:46You can also look up and find a flower essence made in that land
- 10:51that perhaps you're from.
- 10:52You might still live in this landscape or if you're someone like me,
- 10:56you might not,
- 10:57but you can actually find a maker who makes flower essences on that land and
- 11:01have it shipped over to you and connect that way. In general,
- 11:06this time in autumn is such a rich space for exploring our consciousness.
- 11:11This is the classic time of the year in which the veil between the worlds thins.
- 11:17So if you're intrigued by this idea of deepening ancestor work and connecting to
- 11:21the Otherworld, this place where the ancestors, the fairies, the plant spirits,
- 11:26and the unseen beings live, then come join me for Herbs for the Otherworld.
- 11:32In this online class, we explore some of those potent rituals, plants,
- 11:36and practices for connecting into the medicine of Autumn.
- 11:41The course includes a guided journey into the Otherworld as well as suggestions
- 11:45for how to celebrate this time of the year.
- 11:51So if you are interested in Herbs for the Otherworld,
- 11:55I will go ahead and put that link here.
- 11:57It's been so sweet to see some folks joining that class again
- 12:02this autumn. It's one of my absolute favorites.
- 12:06And if you'd like to go deeper into
- 12:10herbalism,
- 12:12in particular herbalism as a highly sensitive in this season,
- 12:17I am a part of Ecoversity's online Herbal
- 12:21Medicine Making Summit, which is starting this week.
- 12:24So if you are listening this week,
- 12:26this is a free summit live with 38 teachers.
- 12:30It's actually quite special that this is all happening live.
- 12:34And I will be teaching on October 15th,
- 12:39and I'll specifically be teaching a class called Herbs for Sensitive Nervous
- 12:43Systems.
- 12:44This is the class that I wish that I had taken when I first started in
- 12:49herbalism to understand why herbs tend to work different in my body,
- 12:54what needs to be different in terms of the way I interact with herbs, dosage,
- 12:58the kind of plants that work for me.
- 13:01We are going to talk about specific plants that help those of us with sensitive
- 13:06nervous systems in general in our life,
- 13:09and I'm really excited to just dive into this topic that's really been at the
- 13:13core of my practice forever.
- 13:16And it's something I think my own ancestors would be particularly delighted to
- 13:20know that I have been sussing out, figuring out over time,
- 13:24because we know now that sensitivity is an inherited trait that
- 13:29many of us are born sensitive as highly sensitive people, as empaths,
- 13:34et cetera, because our ancestors were sensitive as well.
- 13:39And so this feels like such a big nod to my ancestors to teach this
- 13:43class. And I also find those of us with sensitive nervous systems,
- 13:46we're also the ones who tend to be receiving messages through the veil,
- 13:51interested in connecting with the ancestors,
- 13:53and also here to transform some of what we've been carrying
- 13:58from our ancestral lines.
- 14:00So if you are interested in this totally free
- 14:05class,
- 14:05Herbs for Sensitive Nervous Systems as a part of Ecoversity's Online Summit,
- 14:10I will also go ahead and put that link below.
- 14:13So however you are marking this time with your,
- 14:16whether it's pumpkin spice lattes or you've got your decorative gourds out
- 14:22or you're out there making yourself some elderberry tea,
- 14:26know that this is a time for deepening.
- 14:29This is a time when the life from the upper world goes
- 14:34into the roots where things like the canopy get clear,
- 14:38but also the things within us get clear, our visions of our own lives,
- 14:42of what's possible for us. And may,
- 14:46as this time of the thinning of the veil occurs for you, this time of seership,
- 14:50as we've been exploring this month,
- 14:53may it help you come home to yourself,
- 14:56may it help you deepen into life in all the ways,
- 15:00and may it help you remember that most important thing of all, why you're here.
