- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote Podcast, designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:10for August 15th, today's National Relaxation Day.
- 0:14And what perfect timing. We're right in the heart of
- 0:17summer when the pace of life traditionally slows down just a
- 0:21little bit and we collectively give ourselves permission to
- 0:24take things a little easier. National Relaxation Day was
- 0:29created in 1985 by a nine year old Sean Mueller from Cleo,
- 0:35Michigan. The child basically looked
- 0:37around at the adult world and thought, you know what, these
- 0:40grown-ups need a day just to chill out.
- 0:44As luck would have it, Sean's grandfather, William D Chase,
- 0:49was the founder of Chase Calendar of Annual Events, so
- 0:53young Sean had the perfect platform to make his idea
- 0:57official. And thank goodness he did.
- 1:00Because in a world of always on, constantly connected devices
- 1:06where we can work from anywhere, we need this reminder more than
- 1:11ever. National Relaxation Day isn't
- 1:14just about being lazy, though there's nothing wrong with that
- 1:18today anyway. It's about recognizing that rest
- 1:22and relaxation are essential for our mental and physical health,
- 1:27not luxuries. We fit in eventually, when we
- 1:29have the time. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:33from Maya Angelou. Just kidding, that's a good one.
- 1:40Today's actual quote comes from the ancient Roman philosopher
- 1:44Ovid, who once said take a rest. A field that has rested gives
- 1:52that bountiful crop both that understood something that our
- 1:56modern culture often forgets. Rest isn't the opposite of
- 2:00productivity, it's actually the foundation of it.
- 2:04Just like a field needs time to lie fallow to restore its
- 2:08nutrients and prepare for the next growing season, we need
- 2:12periods of rest to restore our mental, emotional, and physical
- 2:15resources. Think about it.
- 2:18Farmers who try to use their fields year after year without
- 2:21letting them rest end up with depleted soil that produces
- 2:25smaller and smaller harvests. But a field that's given time to
- 2:29rest comes back stronger, more fertile, and capable of
- 2:34producing an abundant crop. The same principle applies to
- 2:38us. When we're constantly go, go
- 2:41going, always producing, always busy, we start to deplete our
- 2:46inner resources. Our creativity suffers.
- 2:49Our patience wears thin, our joy diminishes, and ironically, our
- 2:55productivity actually decreases. But when we give ourselves
- 2:59permission to rest, really rest, not just collapsing from
- 3:03exhaustion, we're not being lazy, we're being strategic.
- 3:10We're investing in our future capacity to create, to problem
- 3:14solve, to connect with others and define meaning in our work.
- 3:19Ovid's agricultural metaphor is a perfect example because it
- 3:23reminds us that rest is a natural cycle, not a luxury.
- 3:28Just as plants need both sunlight and darkness, activity
- 3:33and dormancy, we need both engagement and restoration.
- 3:39I learned this lesson the hard way.
- 3:41For several years I worked 2 jobs, my regular telecom sales
- 3:46job during the day and a bartender or a comedy club
- 3:51doorman by night. After a while I got used to
- 3:54working a crazy amount of hours and I felt guilty about
- 3:57relaxation, like I should always be productive, always be working
- 4:03towards something. I literally didn't know what to
- 4:06do with myself when I actually had the rare day off.
- 4:10But my productivity and effectiveness started to
- 4:14diminish and one day couldn't even get out of bed.
- 4:19So I called in, exhausted and decided to stick with just one
- 4:23job after that. It's weird because now I have
- 4:27the opposite problem. Anyway, the lesson I learned is
- 4:31to think of relaxation not as time wasted, but as time
- 4:35invested. So today, in honor of nine year
- 4:39old Sean Moyler's brilliant idea, give yourself permission
- 4:43to truly relax. Take that walk, read that book,
- 4:48sit in that chair and do absolutely nothing.
- 4:52Listen to music, breathe deeply. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:57for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:00Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
