- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast that Sarban Nickeye, Austin Rose, Dakota
- 0:23Speaker 1: free tag. I don't have a bowling sound to enter here,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but might as well entert bowling ball, hitting pins and
- 0:33Speaker 1: knocking him down, because the Huskers are going bowling for
- 0:37Speaker 1: the second straight year here under Matt rule after beating
- 0:42Speaker 1: Northwestern twenty eight twenty one. So let's take a little
- 0:44Speaker 1: moment here to celebrate that.
- 0:47Speaker 2: When it was last time I were able to go
- 0:49Speaker 2: bowling before November.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I don't have it pulled up to you know.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I thought that was like a stat you had, like
- 0:58Speaker 1: ready to go. It should have been last year, but
- 1:02Speaker 1: it wasn't it. I think we do have to appreciate
- 1:07Speaker 1: this a little bit and not overlook it. I know
- 1:10Speaker 1: where we're out of the program and some people are
- 1:12Speaker 1: wanting us to be a lot further than this, but
- 1:16Speaker 1: to look at where we've kind of come over the
- 1:18Speaker 1: last ten years, it's it's an accomplishment. And actually this
- 1:24Speaker 1: year it wasn't even talked about, and Roll even said it,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and the players said it in the locker room. It
- 1:28Speaker 1: wasn't even talked about, so that in that show Signs
- 1:31Speaker 1: of No this is the expectation as we make a
- 1:34Speaker 1: bowl game every year, and just appreciate that we haven't
- 1:38Speaker 1: been there the last ten years because there's obviously been
- 1:43Speaker 1: times we haven't even been cloaks to that. Now we
- 1:47Speaker 1: have a lot of games left this year, which is
- 1:50Speaker 1: also a positive. But I do want that we want
- 1:55Speaker 1: to call that out because it hadn't been talked about.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Dak Wars bowling shirt at the tailgate this week.
- 1:59Speaker 4: You bet that's back to back years. I've worked they
- 2:04Speaker 4: both those games, so so I'm basically the reason why
- 2:08Speaker 4: Nebraska at the bull game.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yet, well I'm glad you were there.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Yep.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And I do think that whole narrative of Nebraska football
- 2:18Speaker 1: and where we need to get to or want to
- 2:21Speaker 1: get to, of being a consistent playoff team or more
- 2:26Speaker 1: than that eventually, I mean, that's the goal. This is
- 2:30Speaker 1: a step in the right direction. I don't think it's
- 2:32Speaker 1: coming quite as fast as some people want it to
- 2:35Speaker 1: be or think it should be. And I do think
- 2:37Speaker 1: a lot of that is signetti in Indiana like that
- 2:40Speaker 1: is not for Nebraska. That's everywhere around the country that
- 2:46Speaker 1: people say, well he can do it, so we should
- 2:49Speaker 1: be doing it, and I'm not saying that's a wrong take.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's's also very truth. But it does take someone a
- 2:55Speaker 1: special coach like Signetti to do something like that with
- 2:57Speaker 1: what Indiana is doing. But we're still progress, right, We're
- 3:00Speaker 1: still moving there. The year three rule narrative is maybe
- 3:05Speaker 1: not like blowing people out of proportion, right and going,
- 3:08Speaker 1: oh my gosh, this is rule three, But it's still
- 3:12Speaker 1: so far we've seen steps in the right direction. What
- 3:18Speaker 1: does that mean for the next four, three, four five
- 3:20Speaker 1: years moving forward? I don't know. I mean a lot
- 3:25Speaker 1: of things can change, obviously, as we know, so I
- 3:27Speaker 1: think just appreciate where we're at now. That that was
- 3:30Speaker 1: my general vibe. I'm not like, I'm not thrilled. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 1: not like jumping for joy that this is that we're
- 3:37Speaker 1: back and this is the best thing ever. But I'm
- 3:40Speaker 1: also not upset because obviously things could have gotten way
- 3:45Speaker 1: worse on Saturday.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Oh yeah, here's that. Here's a bigger part even then
- 3:53Speaker 4: them just making a ball game and the rask is
- 3:55Speaker 4: making a bull game. Finally winning one score.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Games we did.
- 4:02Speaker 4: That's that's probably the biggest thing that reals changes be
- 4:05Speaker 4: in here. I mean, well, they want three straight one
- 4:07Speaker 4: score games, which is which lost like fifteen straight, but
- 4:13Speaker 4: I get I don't know the exact numbers behind it.
- 4:14Speaker 1: But yeah, and another game winning drive tighter or behind
- 4:20Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter from data in the offense and
- 4:25Speaker 1: Royola leading the charge, which also I agree it's important
- 4:29Speaker 1: to call out and appreciate because we've been on the
- 4:33Speaker 1: opposite end of that for way too long and things
- 4:38Speaker 1: have changed. I do not think it's luck, just like
- 4:40Speaker 1: I don't think it was bad luck that we were
- 4:42Speaker 1: losing those games. I also don't think it's good luck
- 4:44Speaker 1: that we're winning. I think that is a it's a
- 4:47Speaker 1: process change, it's a culture thing that has gone in
- 4:49Speaker 1: the right direction. Obviously, you want to get to the
- 4:54Speaker 1: point where you all have to be in those games
- 4:55Speaker 1: and that you take a team and beat them so
- 4:59Speaker 1: you're not in a one score game, which we have
- 5:01Speaker 1: the opportunities to do. And that's where some of the
- 5:03Speaker 1: frustrations I think have came in this game. In some
- 5:08Speaker 1: of these other one score games, we've had the chance
- 5:10Speaker 1: to barry. We haven't done that yet, but it is
- 5:14Speaker 1: as a step in the right direction. It is, and
- 5:17Speaker 1: we're on the right side of it. But yeah, the
- 5:23Speaker 1: roller coaster continues. That was my note. Roller coaster just continues.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I say, I hope you guys still put money on Northwestern.
- 5:31Speaker 2: We lost to the spread again.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I feel like that's been like, not just to this
- 5:37Speaker 2: year thing. I don't know about you, but it feels
- 5:39Speaker 2: like we always the spread. We've got to be the
- 5:42Speaker 2: worst team to bet on. We bet against.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Cover the spread spread once this year yet, I mean, okay, yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 4: I guess, But other than that, I don't.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I do.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I mean the spreads influenced by money, and I mean
- 6:03Speaker 1: is knowing our fan base and what we do. I mean,
- 6:05Speaker 1: our spread is always going to be I think inflated
- 6:07Speaker 1: a couple of points because Nebraska fans probably put across
- 6:12Speaker 1: the country, probably put a little more juice and faith
- 6:14Speaker 1: in to their own team than other teams. I don't
- 6:18Speaker 1: know exactly the numbers of stats behind that, but I
- 6:21Speaker 1: think that probably is a little bit of that reason.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And it was half a point more this week.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So yeah, it was a good game, I guess general
- 6:38Speaker 2: overall thoughts, I'm wondering if you guys feel the same.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It didn't feel.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I don't know, because it wasn't one of those games
- 6:53Speaker 2: where I didn't feel great about us really at any point,
- 6:55Speaker 2: but I also didn't feel bad about us at any point.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I'm just I'm a man after that game, like.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's kind of where I'm at too.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I definitely think it was a holding on that last
- 7:06Speaker 2: call that wasn't passive appearance that.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I do want to talk about the refs here, Dak,
- 7:13Speaker 1: how how do you feel about the game? Because I
- 7:15Speaker 1: know how you fell initially after. I'm not sure if
- 7:17Speaker 1: you remember how you felt, but how did you I'm like,
- 7:20Speaker 1: a I'm like a man like that, And I don't
- 7:24Speaker 1: know if that's because of the expectations of where things
- 7:27Speaker 1: we think should be, but it just it was. It's
- 7:30Speaker 1: a win, and we have to That's why I started
- 7:32Speaker 1: off trying to be positive and appreciate a couple of
- 7:36Speaker 1: the good things of where the program is going. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: at the same time, there's still so many things to
- 7:43Speaker 1: nitpick and talk about. I think just because we're expecting more,
- 7:47Speaker 1: which I don't think is a bad thing as a
- 7:49Speaker 1: fan base. I don't think it's a bad thing by
- 7:51Speaker 1: any means, But Dak, how how did you? How did you?
- 7:55Speaker 1: How'd you feel?
- 7:56Speaker 4: Okay? I after the game, I was a little bit
- 7:58Speaker 4: too jacked up.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I was.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I was pomped about how they play. I was like,
- 8:01Speaker 4: I was like, you guys, looking back on it, it's
- 8:06Speaker 4: it's kind of a man for me too, Like it's
- 8:07Speaker 4: nothing spectacular, but.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Come on, hold your ground to the jacked up phase
- 8:12Speaker 1: of it. You don't know you want.
- 8:13Speaker 4: You were, Let me go drink twenty five ninety lights
- 8:17Speaker 4: and then I'll be jacked up about it. Yeah, I'm not.
- 8:22Speaker 4: It wasn't like the best win. What I what I
- 8:24Speaker 4: was saying at Tilgate basically was how many years are
- 8:32Speaker 4: people people aren't even happy just about a win anymore.
- 8:34Speaker 3: It's how you win.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's how you win. And yeah, I'm a man
- 8:44Speaker 4: because I don't.
- 8:45Speaker 3: It wasn't.
- 8:46Speaker 4: It wasn't the greatest win ever. But a win's a win,
- 8:50Speaker 4: and that's that's all that really matters right now.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Yeah that you mean anythink you just copied with Austin.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I said, I was hoping you brought the angle of like,
- 8:58Speaker 1: no be excited about a win, because I do think
- 9:01Speaker 1: there's part of that that's that's missing but from the
- 9:06Speaker 1: fan base, and and I do think fans that can
- 9:09Speaker 1: appreciate that are probably in a better like they they're
- 9:11Speaker 1: enjoying it more because because they aren't critiquing or or
- 9:18Speaker 1: finding the negative side of things. So I mean, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: was hoping you'd stay there, but like you always do,
- 9:24Speaker 1: just copy what we say.
- 9:28Speaker 4: It was really jacky. It's like they won the Super
- 9:31Speaker 4: Bowl or like the Cultural Playoff.
- 9:33Speaker 1: You're you're pretty fired up.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I was pumped.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So yeah, I think it's a it's a it's a
- 9:44Speaker 1: outcome or product of this season, the way it's gone
- 9:46Speaker 1: so far, of just being a roller coaster and the
- 9:49Speaker 1: good and the bad. I also think that it's important
- 9:52Speaker 1: keep in mind that's not just Nebraska. That's college football
- 9:55Speaker 1: in general now and you're seeing just scores. And my
- 9:57Speaker 1: brother kind of reminded me of that this week too.
- 9:59Speaker 1: It's like good teams play really bad, and bad teams
- 10:05Speaker 1: can play good, and scores can look crazy, and from
- 10:09Speaker 1: one week to the next, from one quarter to the next,
- 10:12Speaker 1: like it's happening a lot. And that's just the nature
- 10:14Speaker 1: of football in general, not just in college, but in
- 10:17Speaker 1: the NFL too. I mean, I think yesterday the Dolphins,
- 10:21Speaker 1: who have just played like absolute dog shit the last
- 10:23Speaker 1: four or five weeks, go out and kill the Falcons
- 10:26Speaker 1: at in Atlanta like it. It's a product a little
- 10:30Speaker 1: bit of the sport when you do have very evenly
- 10:34Speaker 1: matched talent or product on the field, that you see
- 10:41Speaker 1: some high variation in scores, and a lot of that
- 10:44Speaker 1: does come then down the culture and motivation and getting
- 10:47Speaker 1: up for games, and we obviously didn't do that last week,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and that's not acceptable by any means. But it's also
- 10:54Speaker 1: not Man, we're just horrible, and this program's in a
- 10:59Speaker 1: bad spot where we lose this game against Northwestern, my
- 11:02Speaker 1: mind would have went there because then I would have
- 11:04Speaker 1: thought the locker room has been lost. And now we've
- 11:08Speaker 1: kind of seen a little pattern, which is what happened,
- 11:11Speaker 1: what has happened to Penn State, right I mean, that's
- 11:15Speaker 1: that you can see is what's happened. That's what happened
- 11:18Speaker 1: at Florida, That's what's happened to LSU. Some programs that
- 11:24Speaker 1: you know obviously have been a lot better than us
- 11:28Speaker 1: in the past, but are playing now down to their
- 11:31Speaker 1: competition and losing games as well. So it's just it's
- 11:34Speaker 1: it's a it's a college football thing right now, and
- 11:36Speaker 1: I think that's a good reminder as we finish out
- 11:39Speaker 1: the year against probably four at least three of our
- 11:44Speaker 1: tougher opponents that we've played all year.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, it's good to go bowling. That's that's
- 11:53Speaker 2: all I had to say. It feel it felt good.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Now, I do want to call this out given all
- 12:00Speaker 1: the conversation we've had about the future of rule and
- 12:04Speaker 1: here at Nebraska. Yeah, you do expect to win. I
- 12:10Speaker 1: would say at least two of these games. I mean,
- 12:12Speaker 1: you'd want to show us moving forward. I mean, I
- 12:15Speaker 1: would say, going seven and five, it's just going to
- 12:20Speaker 1: feel it's not gonna feel like a good step given
- 12:22Speaker 1: our schedule, and obviously it's implying maybe we beat UCLA
- 12:27Speaker 1: and lose USC Penn State and Iowa. Right, you you'd
- 12:30Speaker 1: want to win at least two of those, if not
- 12:31Speaker 1: three of those, to say, oh, rules the guy. We
- 12:35Speaker 1: want here for the future, to make our step forward
- 12:37Speaker 1: in the progress. I think that's what we want to see.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Some people might even go four or four if you want,
- 12:44Speaker 1: if you want to go there. But I don't know
- 12:46Speaker 1: that we're going to be favorites in a lot of
- 12:48Speaker 1: these games, so there's not going to be the pressure
- 12:49Speaker 1: of being a seven point favorite to win the game.
- 12:51Speaker 1: We kind of can play the little bit of the
- 12:53Speaker 1: underdog mentality, but these games are going to be tougher.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But I think for the program to take the step forward,
- 12:58Speaker 1: we want to win them. Like it's not it's not
- 13:01Speaker 1: not we're okay going six and six and seven and five,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and that's progress, right, that's my worst fear. I'm gonna
- 13:09Speaker 1: storry having nightmares on it is us going in seven
- 13:11Speaker 1: and five and he maybe even eight and four and
- 13:13Speaker 1: everybody going we won one more game than last year.
- 13:16Speaker 1: That's progress and we're moving in the right direction. I'm
- 13:19Speaker 1: like and be satisfied with it. As a program. The
- 13:24Speaker 1: schedule was easy this year. It still is like that
- 13:30Speaker 1: that we can't be okay with that. I think that
- 13:32Speaker 1: that's a little bit red yellow flaggy for me for
- 13:35Speaker 1: the future if that happens now.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Who knows.
- 13:38Speaker 1: We could lose all four, we could win all four.
- 13:40Speaker 1: It's just the way the season's gonna go.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I mean, eight and four, you feel two wins is
- 13:47Speaker 3: a pretty decent jump.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'm okay, I feel better. I'm not jumped ahead over
- 13:52Speaker 1: heels for saying, man, we need to keep rule here,
- 13:55Speaker 1: and he like, I'm not going that way now. Nine
- 14:00Speaker 1: ten and two, I get a little more excited about
- 14:02Speaker 1: rule being the future here. If that's what's happening, that's
- 14:06Speaker 1: all gonna be up in here still to and the
- 14:08Speaker 1: drama heading into Penn State and all it's gonna be.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It's gonna be interesting.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I will add that Brian Kelly gave fire and LSU
- 14:19Speaker 2: is also fit. Definitely not good for us as far
- 14:23Speaker 2: as if if if we were to go ten and
- 14:26Speaker 2: two or even better.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's's more jobs opening.
- 14:31Speaker 4: So yeah, and it seems it seems like I'm gonna
- 14:35Speaker 4: talk about national picture. It seems like coaches even even
- 14:39Speaker 4: a couple of years got fore like coaches had shortly
- 14:42Speaker 4: if it was even shorter now with all of this,
- 14:46Speaker 4: with all the nil transpport and all that, Like, you
- 14:48Speaker 4: guys turn your program around and keep it steady there
- 14:49Speaker 4: for a while.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But we guys all be honest, we go if we go.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm not we have no reason to think this. But
- 14:55Speaker 1: if the tops fall off and we finished the year
- 14:59Speaker 1: losing four games in a row, I definitely I will
- 15:03Speaker 1: definitely be calling for rules head. I don't think it'll
- 15:06Speaker 1: be the only one. I'm not saying that will happen,
- 15:08Speaker 1: but I think that you think about where that where
- 15:11Speaker 1: will where will be at if that happens. I mean,
- 15:13Speaker 1: we're not going to be a good state of mind,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I don't think. But so, yeah, there's a lot that's
- 15:20Speaker 1: gonna happen here. I think for the season. I mut's
- 15:23Speaker 1: talk more about this game here and dive into Northwestern
- 15:26Speaker 1: and there's there's some key things points I want to mention.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Let's stay on the positive side. Mike Eckler. I think
- 15:35Speaker 1: we just need to start doing a weekly appreciation for
- 15:38Speaker 1: the job that he's done, and keep in mind what
- 15:41Speaker 1: it has been before he got here, special teams with
- 15:46Speaker 1: several different coordinator coaches, and you know, I don't we
- 15:51Speaker 1: don't know the inside announced how to coach football in general,
- 15:54Speaker 1: but special teams specifically, and Mike Eckler clearly does to
- 15:58Speaker 1: a very very superior extent. So I'm still petitioning for
- 16:06Speaker 1: him to be our next head coach. If something were
- 16:08Speaker 1: to happen to rule, I just think he'd be tremendous.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I don't know if you see I saw the video
- 16:12Speaker 1: of him going nuts after the kickoff return touch Yeah,
- 16:17Speaker 1: really even had to tell him to calm down, Like
- 16:21Speaker 1: it's great for to bring that kind of energy and
- 16:25Speaker 1: passion to I'm gonna call it the boring part part
- 16:29Speaker 1: of football, but to make it mean so much to
- 16:32Speaker 1: the team, the players, it's it's winning as football games,
- 16:36Speaker 1: like truly winning as football games. And it's not just
- 16:40Speaker 1: on kickoff return it's been I mean, Archie Wilson had
- 16:43Speaker 1: an average fifty seven yards of punt. The one thing
- 16:46Speaker 1: that would have topped that up is if he could
- 16:48Speaker 1: have got that one to check up at the three
- 16:51Speaker 1: yard line. Had two punts and one was a bomb.
- 16:55Speaker 1: We did miss a field goal, keep that in mind.
- 16:58Speaker 1: That didn't great, but it just from an overall special
- 17:02Speaker 1: team standpoint, appreciate the guy. And again I'm if anything
- 17:06Speaker 1: happens the rule or if things go south, like give
- 17:09Speaker 1: me Mike Eckler, we don't. We're not gonna pay the
- 17:11Speaker 1: guy either, like a huge, huge salary. And I think
- 17:16Speaker 1: a guy like that, blue collar, preaches energy, passion like
- 17:20Speaker 1: I think he'd be great. I just again appreciate him
- 17:25Speaker 1: being here. He's the one guy I put some blind
- 17:28Speaker 1: faith into and so far it's been paying off greatly
- 17:30Speaker 1: for the program.
- 17:33Speaker 2: That So I did watch the game on tape delay,
- 17:37Speaker 2: I felt, you know, I don't know if that makes
- 17:39Speaker 2: me be an old person, because I'm totally fine doing
- 17:41Speaker 2: that now.
- 17:42Speaker 1: But when you do that, do you have zero idea
- 17:45Speaker 1: of the game out there?
- 17:45Speaker 2: So I did. I try to have zero idea. The
- 17:48Speaker 2: reason I did it was because I was stayed in
- 17:50Speaker 2: my fence. I had no idea what the score was.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Four o'clock. I had to go and get paint thinner
- 17:55Speaker 2: at the hardware store, and I walk up to the
- 17:57Speaker 2: count and the guys that was hell of a game
- 17:59Speaker 2: by the boys today, was like, damn it. I mean,
- 18:02Speaker 2: it's so pretty close. I was just I was cleaning
- 18:04Speaker 2: up and then I was gonna watch the game. I
- 18:06Speaker 2: didn't even ask him. I wasn't wearing any Husker gear
- 18:08Speaker 2: or anything. Of course it's a freaking hardware store, but
- 18:15Speaker 2: I did. I rewatched the kickoff return twice after it
- 18:18Speaker 2: happened because I was like, man, it was just it
- 18:20Speaker 2: was so pretty.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It was great play.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I don't know why he doesn't why a lot of Williams,
- 18:28Speaker 2: no Kenneth Williams, there we go. I don't know why
- 18:32Speaker 2: it doesn't play any other time, the kickoff return.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So that got talked about a little bit after the game.
- 18:40Speaker 1: On when I was driving home. He's not a very
- 18:43Speaker 1: big dude, get the wrong He's got a role, He's
- 18:49Speaker 1: got a defined, specific roles. I don't know if you
- 18:52Speaker 1: want to mess with that right now anywhere else. I
- 18:56Speaker 1: think he's I think there's sometimes guys like that that
- 19:00Speaker 1: do your job, do it really really well, get really
- 19:02Speaker 1: good at it, and continue to get really good at it,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and you don't want to add another thing to their
- 19:06Speaker 1: plate quite yet. Now maybe that's something in the future
- 19:09Speaker 1: you definitely can do. But I agree, he's so fast,
- 19:13Speaker 1: he's so fast.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yeah, he just barely got missed getting tackled like four times.
- 19:18Speaker 2: It was just right at the heels, like he was
- 19:22Speaker 2: inches from being tackled four different times. It was great,
- 19:26Speaker 2: you're right, I you know, our Lord Savior, Archie Wilson
- 19:31Speaker 2: and Mike Eckler best unit of the team.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Good.
- 19:35Speaker 4: We were just talking about asking that he turned around
- 19:37Speaker 4: the Indiana program, like what Eckler's done, And I mean,
- 19:42Speaker 4: Nebraska is one of the worst special teams in the
- 19:44Speaker 4: country and coming into the year and just flipping around
- 19:47Speaker 4: like in one season. Now now it's easily the best
- 19:50Speaker 4: unit on the team. Like it's Yeah, appreciation posts there
- 19:55Speaker 4: you go. Happy for you, Mike Keckler, happy for you.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You know, get that, get it. Get us some good
- 20:02Speaker 1: graphics out there on social media for a Mike Echler
- 20:05Speaker 1: weekly appreciation post.
- 20:07Speaker 4: I'll make one.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I'll make one.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Okay, offensive defense, we're gonna want to start.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Let's start defense, man, Like I think, Okay, things were
- 20:29Speaker 5: better at times.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Our tackling still wasn't great by any means. It was better,
- 20:36Speaker 1: but it was I thought we were a little more aggressive,
- 20:42Speaker 1: which helped. I also don't think Preston Stone's a great
- 20:46Speaker 1: quarterback compared to I mean, even some of the guys
- 20:49Speaker 1: we haven't played great great quarterback, but definitely is probably
- 20:52Speaker 1: one of the worst I think. I mean, he missed
- 20:56Speaker 1: a lot of throws. Yeah, sure that could have been open.
- 21:03Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:03Speaker 1: The running game was stopped most of the time, but
- 21:09Speaker 1: then one blown assignment again on a different type of
- 21:13Speaker 1: run where all of a sudden running back bounces and goes,
- 21:16Speaker 1: oh my gosh, there's nothing but green grass and no
- 21:19Speaker 1: one to be found, and they score a touchdown there
- 21:21Speaker 1: in the second half. I just it's okay, like you,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you wish it'd be better. It was enough to win
- 21:31Speaker 1: the game, so that's that's progress. You know, we got
- 21:35Speaker 1: to stop on their last possession, which was good. Our
- 21:41Speaker 1: DB's got beat a couple of times, specifically the last play,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and then you know, just just tackle the guy that's
- 21:48Speaker 1: okay before the ball gets there. We're good. So yeah,
- 21:56Speaker 1: that's that's overall how I felt defensively this game. Good
- 22:01Speaker 1: enough to get a win, but obviously still a lot
- 22:03Speaker 1: of things to work on.
- 22:09Speaker 3: One so Malcolm Hart talks out for the year, not the.
- 22:12Speaker 1: End of the world, but definitely doesn't help.
- 22:16Speaker 3: It doesn't help. Is Marquis buff Is he bad? Now?
- 22:22Speaker 1: I don't know. That's been like he doesn't even make
- 22:24Speaker 1: the he's not starting. That's been eye opening. Yeah, there's been.
- 22:30Speaker 1: There's been some guys that just just have moved around.
- 22:34Speaker 1: I guess on the defensive side that you're like, oh,
- 22:36Speaker 1: well that's interesting.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yep, But yeah, you're you're right. It was a very
- 22:43Speaker 2: mad performance. We didn't get really any pressure on the quarterback.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Then press the stone definitely missed some open throws. I
- 22:54Speaker 2: was like, well, if you hit, that's.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Scary heading into USC week, that for me, that's like.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Yeah, because because they won't they won't miss those throws.
- 23:05Speaker 3: No, they should have missed those throws anyways.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I mean, I mean it's still only twenty one points
- 23:11Speaker 4: giving up It's.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it was it was okay.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Performance it wasn't Yeah, it wasn't it.
- 23:22Speaker 6: I just don't know.
- 23:23Speaker 4: This would be like like the fifth game this year
- 23:25Speaker 4: where you walk out of the game not knowing how
- 23:27Speaker 4: to feel about it. I don't know about you, guys.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I don't know. I know what to feel about it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: My feeling is just like I said, it's man, my feeling. Yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I want to feel about it. It's I have my
- 23:39Speaker 1: feelings about it. It's not like I've been I'm like,
- 23:41Speaker 1: what do I feel after this game? It just is
- 23:44Speaker 1: very okay, it's very average yep. And that that. Here's
- 23:51Speaker 1: another concerning part in it. It's on the offensive side too,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and it does it goes back to interior offensive linemen
- 23:58Speaker 1: on both ends, short yardage situation on defense. I mean,
- 24:04Speaker 1: Northwestern had three QB sneaks I think, and converted them
- 24:08Speaker 1: all like very easily. Not not like not push pushes.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm talking like third and two's where we we just
- 24:15Speaker 1: we aren't we aren't lined upright or something, and they
- 24:18Speaker 1: identified Okay, well we'll just sneak it for three yards
- 24:20Speaker 1: because there's nobody like press and stones like oh there's
- 24:24Speaker 1: a hole, like catch it and go, snap it and go.
- 24:26Speaker 1: So like that is if it's not it's not good
- 24:32Speaker 1: because those are there's a lot of those that come
- 24:34Speaker 1: throughout the ebbs and flow of a game. So I
- 24:41Speaker 1: think that needs to get better. But I think we
- 24:43Speaker 1: also know that's a weakness of our team, is the
- 24:44Speaker 1: interior defensive lineman. It's it's not great, and that tells
- 24:50Speaker 1: you how important Nash and Tie were and we've said
- 24:52Speaker 1: that over and over and over. We don't have that
- 24:55Speaker 1: this year. So how can we schematically adjust to that?
- 25:00Speaker 1: If we want to adjust to that? Right on thirty
- 25:02Speaker 1: and two, maybe we don't want nine guys in the
- 25:03Speaker 1: box or eight guys in the box and give up
- 25:05Speaker 1: a play action forty yard bomb, Like to me, I
- 25:11Speaker 1: would want Preston Stone taking that chance of doing that
- 25:14Speaker 1: versus I'm just being able to sneak it right up
- 25:16Speaker 1: the gut for three arms, which they did more than once.
- 25:21Speaker 1: So that that that my general thoughts on defense again, and.
- 25:28Speaker 4: It's yeah, it just feels like USC is going to
- 25:33Speaker 4: be able to take care of or take advantage of
- 25:35Speaker 4: the place. We're talking about that Northwest missed a lot
- 25:38Speaker 4: better this week, so that's.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'll be curious about that too, because I don't think.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I haven't watched US so much yet. But I don't
- 25:46Speaker 1: know if Jane Miyaba is getting under center and running
- 25:48Speaker 1: a quarterback snak. No, I can't imagine that Lincoln Riley
- 25:51Speaker 1: is doing that with him. Maybe they are, so it
- 25:55Speaker 1: is going to look different. They're that concern like that
- 25:57Speaker 1: that is, but I is going to do that, He's
- 25:59Speaker 1: going to do that. I don't know the USC was
- 26:03Speaker 1: so that. Yeah, the passing is going to be the
- 26:05Speaker 1: interesting part where I do think. I still think we
- 26:08Speaker 1: match up better with a team that I'm not gonna
- 26:10Speaker 1: call USC not physical, but that's not their type of
- 26:14Speaker 1: style as much as Northwestern Minnesota. I think we maybe
- 26:20Speaker 1: match up a little better us not being as strong
- 26:23Speaker 1: in the trenches, and I'll say it not as physical
- 26:26Speaker 1: as they probably want our team to be.
- 26:29Speaker 2: So do you think our best defensive player is Everyone
- 26:34Speaker 2: says it's sire, right, but like the amount of times
- 26:37Speaker 2: he's been getting targeted and then he's also getting a
- 26:39Speaker 2: lot of pis It's like, well, yeah, he's good.
- 26:42Speaker 3: But.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know Singleton, like, yeah, I think
- 26:51Speaker 1: Singleton leaves some tackles. It's just it's it's I don't know,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I don't know, and that's probably that's probably that's probably
- 26:57Speaker 1: part of the problem. Right. It's again, it's not a
- 27:03Speaker 1: bad unit. We're not a horrible defense.
- 27:06Speaker 3: But do you just stop struggle to get to stop?
- 27:10Speaker 1: We've taken too many steps back, I guess from last
- 27:13Speaker 1: year is the problem.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Yeah, but you expected that though with Tony White being gone, like,
- 27:20Speaker 4: did we.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Yes?
- 27:23Speaker 4: I yeah, I would say so.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I would say a lot of didn't think that. I mean,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I think a lot of Nebraska fans thought it'd be
- 27:32Speaker 1: the same. Or I mean, I think guys lea that
- 27:36Speaker 1: just goes to the kool aid and the people that
- 27:38Speaker 1: have high expectations, like I mean, maybe we did, but
- 27:42Speaker 1: I just think the general general Nebraska fans I call
- 27:45Speaker 1: our defense. I know, we go back to rankings a
- 27:47Speaker 1: lot or I do call it a seven out of ten.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Last year I was saying we need to we will
- 27:51Speaker 1: probably fall off, but better not fall off more than
- 27:53Speaker 1: a six. Like I feel like we're down at a
- 27:56Speaker 1: four right now or four or five it's not quite
- 28:00Speaker 1: the level that we think it should be at anything
- 28:06Speaker 1: else defensive side.
- 28:11Speaker 3: It'd be nice to get more pressure. It's a lot
- 28:13Speaker 3: of one.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yep. I don't know how we do that. I think
- 28:16Speaker 1: we've said that every week. We did force two turnovers finally, Yeah,
- 28:21Speaker 1: but the one was I wouldn't say forced.
- 28:23Speaker 3: One was force is a strong word.
- 28:26Speaker 1: One was which I would say we you can cancel
- 28:29Speaker 1: those two out. Dylan's pick and Preston stones pig almost
- 28:33Speaker 1: for identical where they just neither one of them saw
- 28:35Speaker 1: the middle linebacker and they just threw it right to
- 28:37Speaker 1: his gut. So but but the other one was a
- 28:42Speaker 1: play made on the ball line of scrimmage or deflection
- 28:47Speaker 1: and then a pick, So that was that was encouraging there.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So yeah, it's funny. I do think to the turnover
- 28:56Speaker 1: point not to go on right here, but general people
- 28:59Speaker 1: like just look at that number and they go, oh,
- 29:01Speaker 1: we forced two turnovers, like you're right us. And it's
- 29:03Speaker 1: a difference between forcing and giving like sometimes people just
- 29:06Speaker 1: give you the ball. It's not a forced turnover, like
- 29:09Speaker 1: it's keep that take that for a grain of salt.
- 29:14Speaker 1: And I think it was even real set about data
- 29:18Speaker 1: and when Dana came in, one of the stats that
- 29:20Speaker 1: he looks at is not the turnover differential, but it's
- 29:23Speaker 1: points off turnovers, which, thinking from my coach's perspective, it's
- 29:27Speaker 1: very smart because it's great to get a turnover or
- 29:33Speaker 1: but if you actually score off of it and capitalize
- 29:36Speaker 1: off it is what you need. If you just give
- 29:38Speaker 1: the ball right back to him after a turnover, it
- 29:40Speaker 1: means nothing vice versa. If you if you turn it over,
- 29:45Speaker 1: but then your defense holds them, you can kind of okay,
- 29:48Speaker 1: well you stop them. I gave it to their possession,
- 29:50Speaker 1: but you didn't let them take advantage of it. So
- 29:52Speaker 1: I did like that thought there, uh okay, offense. And
- 29:57Speaker 1: I'm just gonna briefly mention the short yarde discussion and
- 30:01Speaker 1: the concerns as we did that on defense continues to
- 30:04Speaker 1: be an issue when we get in on third and short,
- 30:09Speaker 1: fourth and short, like, I don't think we exactly know
- 30:12Speaker 1: what we're doing yet. I don't we don't know what works.
- 30:15Speaker 1: We've tried the toush push with Heine, the Heinie push,
- 30:18Speaker 1: and gosh, I I I still don't know if we
- 30:21Speaker 1: got that first down, but we got it. They gave
- 30:23Speaker 1: it to us. You know Dylan's fourth and one that
- 30:29Speaker 1: the play call was for him to roll out. You know,
- 30:32Speaker 1: the edge didn't get set, had to improvise, fump, you know,
- 30:35Speaker 1: the fumbles whatever, fourth down.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Like, honestly, the tumble is probably for the better.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I mean, if you're not gonna get it, it's like, well, yeah,
- 30:42Speaker 2: it at least attracted a couple of yards.
- 30:44Speaker 3: I just.
- 30:46Speaker 1: We don't. We don't, and that goes to a lack
- 30:48Speaker 1: of I think trust in physically running it up the
- 30:52Speaker 1: gut and having a player that can do that. Emmett,
- 30:57Speaker 1: Emmett's get the Emmett here in a second. He's not
- 31:01Speaker 1: really a great go get me a yard back because
- 31:05Speaker 1: he's it's not how he's built. We have not tried
- 31:10Speaker 1: or we must not think that Quinn ives is that guy.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Kind of maybe is what we thought going into the year.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I don't know that that's a it's a concern because
- 31:19Speaker 1: of how many times it happens in the game and
- 31:21Speaker 1: we just still aren't good at it, and it comes
- 31:24Speaker 1: from a lack of an offensive line a little bit.
- 31:27Speaker 1: But I don't know the answer to that and just
- 31:30Speaker 1: calling that out as a boy, what are we what
- 31:32Speaker 1: are we gonna do moving forward?
- 31:38Speaker 3: That's where I'm thinking Williams maybe he's I don't know.
- 31:43Speaker 1: He's not a he, but he's not a It depends
- 31:46Speaker 1: what you want, right I Ideally I think in any
- 31:49Speaker 1: and for me and football, you want to be able
- 31:51Speaker 1: to line up eleven v. Eleven and go get a
- 31:54Speaker 1: yard like running the ball.
- 31:56Speaker 2: It's because I do feel like when we run the
- 31:59Speaker 2: ball we get decent We did did decent gaps on
- 32:01Speaker 2: the line, like I actually do think a run blocking
- 32:04Speaker 2: is pretty good.
- 32:05Speaker 3: But when it comes to when they know we're going
- 32:06Speaker 3: to run it correct.
- 32:07Speaker 1: On downs where it's very obvious, that's that's like you're
- 32:11Speaker 1: trying to run the ball. So because we can't do
- 32:14Speaker 1: that on very obvious short downs, we then are trying.
- 32:18Speaker 1: We do have tried to get creative on doing it,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and we haven't figured out what that creative way is yet. Yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 1: part of that too is not having a running quarterback
- 32:25Speaker 1: in you add that that's another element in a short
- 32:29Speaker 1: down in yardage that you have to defend, which Dylan's
- 32:31Speaker 1: not And I voiced my concern last week about that
- 32:35Speaker 1: that's another thing that you don't You don't have that
- 32:37Speaker 1: option to do. I don't, I don't know. I don't
- 32:42Speaker 1: know what the answer is, I full back. I don't
- 32:46Speaker 1: know whose po plays full pack. Throw a fullback in
- 32:48Speaker 1: there and have the ability to run a trap or
- 32:51Speaker 1: a full back dive. Add that, I don't know what
- 32:56Speaker 1: the other option is. One another option is that it's.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Concerning that That was the thing I was gonna say.
- 33:01Speaker 4: It's full back dives is one. That's one of my
- 33:03Speaker 4: favorite calls. There are fourth and one now, But like
- 33:07Speaker 4: you said, I didn't even know if there was a
- 33:08Speaker 4: fullback on the roster, Like, who would it be?
- 33:10Speaker 1: I don't I mean.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Bonner was the fullback when he's out for the year.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Yeah, con that position. Maybe you may be a tight
- 33:18Speaker 1: end type of harboring. Yeah, I don't know nothing.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I'm gonna go on the little ring here, but nothing
- 33:30Speaker 4: pitched me off. Warren Football then went fourth and one
- 33:33Speaker 4: and your team guns out in the shotgun. That is
- 33:35Speaker 4: my least favorite playing all football. It makes no sense
- 33:37Speaker 4: to me.
- 33:38Speaker 1: That's why the only way that I could maybe justify
- 33:42Speaker 1: as if it's harbor like, yeah, so where if we
- 33:45Speaker 1: do some like wildcat type power, Tim Tebow, whatever you
- 33:49Speaker 1: want to call it, stuff, which that maybe is an option.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I don't know, but I still don't like being in
- 33:53Speaker 1: the shotgun out of it, Like it's not ideal.
- 33:55Speaker 4: No, you you just have to get a yard. I
- 34:00Speaker 4: I would think fullback dive of it, like that's that's
- 34:02Speaker 4: my favorite option.
- 34:05Speaker 1: But that's the problem is can we do that? That's
- 34:07Speaker 1: what that's Yeah, that's a night. I mean we we
- 34:10Speaker 1: We've obviously tried it, you know, are are we just
- 34:15Speaker 1: willing to say let's do that on fourth and one
- 34:16Speaker 1: every time and if we don't get it, we go out. Well,
- 34:18Speaker 1: at least we tried it. Like, I think that's where
- 34:20Speaker 1: the coaches are a little bit struggling right now, is
- 34:23Speaker 1: we have kind of tried that a couple of times
- 34:25Speaker 1: and have gotten stopped. So now what are where do
- 34:27Speaker 1: we go to next?
- 34:29Speaker 3: So?
- 34:30Speaker 1: Uh, Emma Johnson, as we were talking about running backs,
- 34:35Speaker 1: the guy's pretty incredible. Guys, we said that last few years, Yeah,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and we got to just keep giving him the ball
- 34:42Speaker 1: as much as we can. And I mean you literally
- 34:46Speaker 1: use every ounce of him that we can while he's
- 34:49Speaker 1: you know, while he's healthy, he's he looks kind of
- 34:52Speaker 1: he's gonna round a gas potentially at points and games
- 34:55Speaker 1: points in the season. I just think you got to
- 34:57Speaker 1: keep pushing that limit. I know some people are calling for,
- 35:00Speaker 1: you know, practice this week obviously to rest, and I
- 35:02Speaker 1: think that's okay to a certain extent. I don't think
- 35:07Speaker 1: you want to start a standard of all right, well,
- 35:09Speaker 1: Emmitt's done it all for us, He's just gonna sit
- 35:11Speaker 1: and watch this whole week. Like, I don't think we
- 35:13Speaker 1: want to do that. But I also think that in
- 35:17Speaker 1: games he I mean, he had twenty seven carries today
- 35:20Speaker 1: or this week. You just got to keep giving him.
- 35:23Speaker 1: He literally he's a workhorse back. He showed that he's
- 35:28Speaker 1: able to do it. I mean what I what I'm
- 35:32Speaker 1: really impressed with is his which we know he's good
- 35:36Speaker 1: at his agility, but his ability to explode and like
- 35:39Speaker 1: some guys when they when they make cuts or make
- 35:42Speaker 1: moves like it takes them another half a second to
- 35:46Speaker 1: get going again, like Emmett's very good at changing direction
- 35:49Speaker 1: and accelerating right away and getting an extra couple of yards.
- 35:54Speaker 1: I mean it just yeah, definitely game ball goes to
- 35:57Speaker 1: him this week, I think, no question again, and he's
- 36:02Speaker 1: had obviously a couple of games like that. Now where
- 36:04Speaker 1: we do we just have to keep relying on him
- 36:07Speaker 1: to get our offense going.
- 36:12Speaker 3: He's really freaking good, best player on the.
- 36:15Speaker 6: Team, yes, yes, yeah, yeah, especially when he can do
- 36:25Speaker 6: in the passing game too, like that he doesn't get
- 36:28Speaker 6: used a ton, but given the passing game he gets
- 36:31Speaker 6: le does get used.
- 36:32Speaker 4: It seem like it's always a positive play.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Him and Isaiah Hunter is definitely kind of starting to
- 36:37Speaker 2: separate himself as the best receiving target.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I think, which which is what you just said.
- 36:46Speaker 4: I yeah, I think the top to an offense are
- 36:48Speaker 4: pretty sentence stone by now, which which I don't know
- 36:53Speaker 4: about you guys. It's it's kind of surprising how much
- 36:57Speaker 4: Barney does not get used as much as I thought
- 36:59Speaker 4: going into the year.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Like, I mean, he just they give him those tiny, short,
- 37:04Speaker 2: little passes and it just gets.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Blown up every time.
- 37:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it doesn't think.
- 37:08Speaker 3: He's gotten his just his ship rocked.
- 37:10Speaker 1: It goes down so easy to still you know, Yeah, I.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Guess might I was gonna say, I guess.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Overall offensive thoughts, I don't really feel like we did
- 37:23Speaker 2: anything that differently than last week. I just we obviously
- 37:26Speaker 2: didn't get all the sacks as we did last week,
- 37:30Speaker 2: but I don't know as far as a game plan,
- 37:33Speaker 2: I didn't feel like we did anything play calling wise
- 37:37Speaker 2: that I was like.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Oh, wow, that's a new fold. Well that's different.
- 37:41Speaker 1: So some of the other recap podcasts media are making
- 37:46Speaker 1: a bigger, a big deal about the number of russ
- 37:50Speaker 1: rushing to passing play calls, and yeah, that leads to
- 37:56Speaker 1: the kind of discussion of our identity. And I do
- 38:01Speaker 1: think awesome that you talked about the difference gamescript matters
- 38:08Speaker 1: of how the game's going, right when you're losing to Minnesota,
- 38:11Speaker 1: you're going now, And Dana mentioned that like that, there's
- 38:15Speaker 1: a there's a sense of that, so keep that in
- 38:17Speaker 1: mind when we're talking about this. And at the same time,
- 38:22Speaker 1: I heard someone else talk about bo Polani where they asked, well,
- 38:24Speaker 1: what is your identity? And both said what would always
- 38:27Speaker 1: say what you're whatever the defense gives you, like that
- 38:31Speaker 1: was his answer. Okay, So there's an element of and
- 38:35Speaker 1: we've had the identity conversation, there's an element of we
- 38:40Speaker 1: don't we're literally tailoring everything that we believe into the
- 38:43Speaker 1: other team's scheme, everything to the to the t going
- 38:47Speaker 1: and that we're putting in new stuff every brand new
- 38:49Speaker 1: stuff every week because that's what we're doing. There's the
- 38:53Speaker 1: flip side of that, where we don't care at all
- 38:56Speaker 1: about the other team and we're not even gonna watch
- 38:58Speaker 1: film and we don't care what they're going to do,
- 39:00Speaker 1: and what we're gonna do is do what we know
- 39:02Speaker 1: how because this is what we believe and this is
- 39:04Speaker 1: our this is our identity. I would Nebraska back in
- 39:08Speaker 1: the day leaned a lot more towards that because they
- 39:11Speaker 1: were able to. And then obviously, the better team you have,
- 39:14Speaker 1: the more you can do that. The worst team you
- 39:16Speaker 1: have goes the other way, where you can't just roll out.
- 39:20Speaker 1: If you're a really bad basketball team, you can't just
- 39:23Speaker 1: roll out and say we're gonna come out and full
- 39:27Speaker 1: court press and get a bunch of steals. If you don't,
- 39:30Speaker 1: if you don't have the players to do that, you're
- 39:31Speaker 1: not gonna do that. If you're if you're one in
- 39:33Speaker 1: twenty like, you're not going to do that. That's not
- 39:36Speaker 1: that's not you're not able to. But if you're better
- 39:38Speaker 1: than them, you can. So there's an element, there's a
- 39:40Speaker 1: fine line in there of deciding what, no, we're going
- 39:46Speaker 1: to do this because this is what we believe in
- 39:48Speaker 1: versus note, we're tailoring all of this to the other team.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And so I guess, Dak, I'll start with you. I
- 39:53Speaker 1: know you have to go here in a couple of minutes.
- 39:56Speaker 1: What would you say Nebraska's identity is on offense.
- 40:03Speaker 4: The run first team by quite a bit, because I
- 40:08Speaker 4: think the on line has a lot to that too.
- 40:09Speaker 1: It why do you say that? See two weeks ago,
- 40:17Speaker 1: what would you.
- 40:18Speaker 4: Have said past first team?
- 40:20Speaker 1: Probably? Yeah, I mean are you are you you think
- 40:24Speaker 1: we're a run first team.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Right right now at the moment, yes, I mean coming
- 40:30Speaker 4: off a game where em Johnson's had twenty eight runs
- 40:32Speaker 4: for I don't even know how many hours hunted into something,
- 40:35Speaker 4: how many players. I just think the offensive line the
- 40:42Speaker 4: rasket cannot be a past first team just because it's
- 40:44Speaker 4: that bad. As we're past blocking, I don't think it's
- 40:48Speaker 4: possible to be past first team.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I would say we were in Cincinnati and that's our
- 40:53Speaker 1: best win of the year.
- 40:57Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but they only put up seventeen points nicking,
- 41:02Speaker 4: So it wasn't like in the spectacular.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Joey wants Achron shorts sixty nine points.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Well, well, we could have still done.
- 41:14Speaker 1: That I'm trying to help you argue with me or not.
- 41:16Speaker 4: I know, I know now I'm thinking at the moment
- 41:20Speaker 4: right now, they are run first team. Coming in the season,
- 41:22Speaker 4: they want to be a past first team, But right now,
- 41:26Speaker 4: at this moment, they are run first.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Which is which is? Which is?
- 41:30Speaker 4: I think the team set up the best.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Okay, Austin, what.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Do you think? I think we're pretty well balanced. I
- 41:40Speaker 3: think we are kind of what what they give us.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I think we I think we want to be a
- 41:44Speaker 2: past first team and it hasn't worked out for us,
- 41:48Speaker 2: so we've been forced into the last week or so,
- 41:52Speaker 2: we didn't run first team.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Dak, you can get out of here whenever. By the way,
- 41:56Speaker 1: you got to go.
- 41:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I do, I I got I got a meeting.
- 42:01Speaker 4: It's big, it's you know what. I'm not gonna start
- 42:09Speaker 4: about linkon traffic. It sucks in the morning. It's whatever.
- 42:12Speaker 4: I'll see you guys.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Uh, you've ready more on that, Austin.
- 42:18Speaker 3: No, that's what I do.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Think we want to be a past I think Dana
- 42:21Speaker 2: wants to be a pass first team, but our offensive
- 42:24Speaker 2: line are run blocking is better, and we've kind of
- 42:27Speaker 2: been forced into a run first team.
- 42:29Speaker 3: But we're pretty much balanced.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Why why do you why do you think Dana wants
- 42:34Speaker 1: to be a pass first team because I.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Think this is what he's comfortable with.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I think that's that's where his brain goes when he's
- 42:41Speaker 2: when he's drawn up plays.
- 42:43Speaker 3: That's what excites him, is the.
- 42:46Speaker 2: The downfield, across the route, the that's just where he
- 42:52Speaker 2: came from.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I and we haven't talked about identity much this year.
- 42:59Speaker 1: We've talked about it a lot previous years. And what
- 43:03Speaker 1: both of you guys said is why this topic is
- 43:07Speaker 1: so intriguing to me. I do think right now we're
- 43:11Speaker 1: a run first team, or we were this last game,
- 43:14Speaker 1: and we've been we were after the loss of Minnesota.
- 43:17Speaker 1: We were forced to shift to that mindset because of
- 43:22Speaker 1: the lack of success we've had trying to be a
- 43:27Speaker 1: past first team before that. And I think that is
- 43:30Speaker 1: what's concerning a little bit from a program philosophy, big
- 43:39Speaker 1: picture standpoint on how the season's gone and why Minnesota
- 43:43Speaker 1: happened the way it did was because we got away
- 43:46Speaker 1: from the run first mentality. And I know you're saying
- 43:49Speaker 1: we're more balanced, and I think that probably is pretty true,
- 43:52Speaker 1: but it did if you would ask anybody going into Minnesota,
- 43:55Speaker 1: people would say we were past first, and that I
- 43:59Speaker 1: think think it was the concern and why it is
- 44:01Speaker 1: upset and frustrated people so much the way the Minnesota
- 44:04Speaker 1: went because Will preached the first couple of years or
- 44:07Speaker 1: his for you know, he preached Big ten football. We
- 44:10Speaker 1: gotta be a run first team. We got established the
- 44:11Speaker 1: run set the past. We gotta be physical up front,
- 44:14Speaker 1: we gotta all this stuff to play like I we
- 44:17Speaker 1: gotta be like Ay, we gotta be like Minnesota. And
- 44:20Speaker 1: then this year, for whatever reason, we've started to go
- 44:23Speaker 1: away from that. And you said it, I think Dana's
- 44:25Speaker 1: a big reason of it, because I agree deep Dana's
- 44:28Speaker 1: Dana's comfortable and enjoys the passing side of football more
- 44:35Speaker 1: than the what he would probably call boring physical football.
- 44:41Speaker 1: It's sad that it took a loss to Minnesota to
- 44:43Speaker 1: actually realize that, but we did. It was overshadowed because
- 44:48Speaker 1: we won Michigan State, we won Maryland, we won Cincinnati
- 44:53Speaker 1: by doing what's quote unquote working in Dana's off. That
- 45:00Speaker 1: to me is a concern a little bit like it's
- 45:03Speaker 1: a lack that what is the belief like I think
- 45:05Speaker 1: rule kind of wants to be more pound the rock,
- 45:10Speaker 1: but I think he also is very easily influenced by
- 45:15Speaker 1: someone like Dana, who I like. That's that's the scary part.
- 45:18Speaker 3: That's the concern. It took.
- 45:19Speaker 1: It took a loss like that for us to realize, oh,
- 45:21Speaker 1: we better go back to our roots and and pound
- 45:24Speaker 1: the rock. I'll be curious what we continue to do.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Like obviously it worked and we won the game again,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I don't know that it's still concerning for the future,
- 45:36Speaker 1: like what do we actually believe in what we want
- 45:38Speaker 1: to do and if we do that, what does that
- 45:43Speaker 1: imply or mean for our team and our personnel Because
- 45:46Speaker 1: you take our personnel wise skill players. That's why I
- 45:49Speaker 1: think Dana wanted to go but we didn't have the
- 45:52Speaker 1: offensive line to do it. And if you don't an
- 45:53Speaker 1: offensive line, you can't do jack shit. But if you're
- 45:57Speaker 1: not you can't run the ball and pound the rock
- 46:02Speaker 1: and control time possession and all that, you're not gonna
- 46:06Speaker 1: be able to do anything anyways. So I think that's
- 46:10Speaker 1: where we're at now.
- 46:12Speaker 3: I mean, our offense is fine, like it's okay, like
- 46:15Speaker 3: we've scored, it's you look at the points.
- 46:18Speaker 2: That's like twenty eight, and then we had the terrible
- 46:20Speaker 2: game as mimisso six and then thirty four, thirty eight,
- 46:23Speaker 2: twenty seven. You know, like if you were telling me
- 46:26Speaker 2: that we were gonna be averaging twenty seven points a game,
- 46:29Speaker 2: I mean, Taylor were averaging more than twenty seven points
- 46:31Speaker 2: a game.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Because of those, Yeah, we obviously had some bad offense
- 46:36Speaker 1: last year.
- 46:36Speaker 3: We know that last year we couldn't even get above twenty.
- 46:39Speaker 2: We lost, like we held all our opponents under twenty
- 46:41Speaker 2: points that we've lost, you know.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Six games, So it's tough to be super upset about
- 46:49Speaker 3: the offense.
- 46:51Speaker 1: I'll I'll be curious is how we finished the year
- 46:56Speaker 1: against some better opponents that I think to win those games,
- 47:00Speaker 1: we're gonna have to play a lot more vanilla conservative
- 47:04Speaker 1: with an occasional twist in there. Like Dylan's numbers going
- 47:09Speaker 1: after the first whatever three four games. Everybody's like, he's
- 47:12Speaker 1: going to average three hundred plus passing yards a game,
- 47:15Speaker 1: and we're gonna throw it fifty t you know, because
- 47:18Speaker 1: that's what we are kind of looking like we were doing.
- 47:20Speaker 3: And you know, we joke we're throwing it forty times
- 47:22Speaker 3: a game. But those first you know, five games, and.
- 47:26Speaker 1: We obviously got hit in our mouth Minnesota, and you
- 47:29Speaker 1: know this week was I think Dylan threw for one
- 47:31Speaker 1: hundred and eighty ninety yards and the style was, no,
- 47:36Speaker 1: We're going to give him at the ball and let
- 47:37Speaker 1: Dylan convert when he needs to. And his last drive
- 47:41Speaker 1: was a thing of beauty. That to me needs to
- 47:44Speaker 1: be our style going into these games. But I'm not
- 47:46Speaker 1: convinced that we're gonna do that necessarily because now we
- 47:49Speaker 1: wont so I hope it doesn't take another loss for
- 47:51Speaker 1: us to go. We just have to establish the rock
- 47:54Speaker 1: and run game and like, hopefully this is enough sign
- 47:57Speaker 1: to go Nope, keep giving him at the ball and
- 48:00Speaker 1: hopefully if Emmitt gets hurt, that was really bad. Not
- 48:04Speaker 1: hopefully that it gets hurt, but if Emmitt does get hurt,
- 48:08Speaker 1: I hope we don't go away from Well, now we
- 48:10Speaker 1: don't have MT, so now we got to go back
- 48:12Speaker 1: to just slinging it fifty times a game. Em It's
- 48:15Speaker 1: obviously a big, big, big, big reason why our run
- 48:19Speaker 1: game is very very good, But I don't know what
- 48:22Speaker 1: that's we needed disabandon it if we don't have him.
- 48:27Speaker 1: So anyways, identity talk I think was important here to
- 48:31Speaker 1: come up as we head into our last four games.
- 48:35Speaker 2: In the last four games are definitely I mean, I
- 48:37Speaker 2: don't know where we feel about UCLA in general, but
- 48:40Speaker 2: it feels like the four toughest games of the year they.
- 48:43Speaker 1: Will be Yep, I think they will be in and
- 48:46Speaker 1: they should be. And looking at I pulled up next
- 48:50Speaker 1: year's schedule and we're in for a we're in for
- 48:53Speaker 1: a different kind of year, and I think this year's
- 48:56Speaker 1: our our opportunity to make a statement with a schedule
- 48:58Speaker 1: that has been so far pretty fam bowl to go in.
- 49:01Speaker 1: You know, we can beat a USC, Iowa and and
- 49:04Speaker 1: we said Minnesota's maybe in that tier too, Like, no,
- 49:08Speaker 1: we're we're there, We're there, we can beat these teams.
- 49:11Speaker 1: We're a tier below them. We haven't been. Minnesota showed
- 49:16Speaker 1: that we're not yet. I wouldn't put Northwestern in that tier.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I wouldn't put Michigan, Sateer, Maryland in that tier. So
- 49:23Speaker 1: these four years are probably new. CLA might not be,
- 49:26Speaker 1: but three of the four teams are in that tier.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Usually I don't know, they've looked good. But yeah, that's
- 49:33Speaker 2: funny you throw up next year's schedule. I was like,
- 49:35Speaker 2: I mean that could very well be the reason, you know,
- 49:37Speaker 2: could definitely be like, well this is as good it's
- 49:39Speaker 2: gonna get here, cash it now because next year it's
- 49:44Speaker 2: Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Yeah, take take out being in the fan at all
- 49:51Speaker 1: and from a pure business decision for Matt Ruhle, finish
- 49:56Speaker 1: this year out strong, try to get you know, nine
- 49:58Speaker 1: or ten wins. Try somewhere else because you're turned another
- 50:04Speaker 1: program around. I mean, if you're a business guy, being.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Players that you already have, you know, you take those
- 50:12Speaker 2: guys with you. Yeah, you get paid, you've you've done
- 50:16Speaker 2: the year three mat rule thing, and then you leave.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Then is that maybe a coward way of not taking
- 50:21Speaker 1: on a challenge and and not taking an yes, but
- 50:25Speaker 1: from an again purely business decision of risk reward, get
- 50:30Speaker 1: paid more money, which is the wrong way to look
- 50:33Speaker 1: at it, by the way, like as coaches, you hope
- 50:36Speaker 1: and none of the coaches are thinking that, but it
- 50:38Speaker 1: is unfortunately that's the world we live in. Yeah, that
- 50:42Speaker 1: would that would be a smart move. But okay, last
- 50:47Speaker 1: quick thing and I'm not going to go because we
- 50:49Speaker 1: could talk fifteen minutes about this. Officials, we have not
- 50:53Speaker 1: had our annual official talk yet I don't think some
- 51:00Speaker 1: pretty bad calls both ways, and I've even heard maybe
- 51:07Speaker 1: even more calls that favored US, which and bias Nebraska
- 51:11Speaker 1: fans are going to go no, no way. Well no,
- 51:15Speaker 1: there were some very bad calls the other way, and
- 51:17Speaker 1: I think we got a lot of favorable spots. I
- 51:18Speaker 1: thought in the game too, I was like, man, I
- 51:20Speaker 1: don't think we got that, but we're crossed by yard area.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I'll move it. So I happened.
- 51:26Speaker 3: I think that, Yeah, they also have one of those two.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it just it was not good. I heard Troy
- 51:33Speaker 1: Dannon was very, very very upset. Matt said the rules
- 51:37Speaker 1: that he had to hold hold Troy back on the
- 51:40Speaker 1: possession catch, which I don't have a clue, I but
- 51:44Speaker 1: my only that was the one call that went against
- 51:46Speaker 1: us that I was like, I don't understand at all
- 51:51Speaker 1: how that couldn't go in our favor. The only justification
- 51:57Speaker 1: I first thought was it could have been a rule
- 51:59Speaker 1: thing I didn't know understand, but I don't think it
- 52:01Speaker 1: was that. After rewatching it, the line on the TV
- 52:06Speaker 1: was not where the sticks were correct. As I looked
- 52:09Speaker 1: at it closer, and where the sticks were was very
- 52:11Speaker 1: very close to where he ended up having possession. He
- 52:14Speaker 1: looked at the still frame of it. However, they still
- 52:19Speaker 1: marked the ball at the twenty five after the review.
- 52:23Speaker 1: If they would have marked it back at the twenty
- 52:26Speaker 1: seven and twenty seven and a half for twenty six
- 52:29Speaker 1: and a half, they would have marked it there and
- 52:31Speaker 1: gave him the first time. I would have been like, okay, yep,
- 52:34Speaker 1: Like they probably didn't have enough evidence to say it
- 52:38Speaker 1: was short of the sticks because you look at the
- 52:40Speaker 1: sticks there. I mean, it's in between the twenty six
- 52:42Speaker 1: and the twenty seven. The line was marked on the
- 52:45Speaker 1: almost twenty five on the TV, so that was my
- 52:48Speaker 1: only explanation I probably had. But then they marked it
- 52:50Speaker 1: on the twenty five. I'm like, there's no way the
- 52:52Speaker 1: ball was on the twenty five.
- 52:54Speaker 2: We watched the replay of him bobbling it and then
- 52:57Speaker 2: coming back. Yes, I agree the first down, I was like, yeah, okay,
- 53:02Speaker 2: like that's you know, we should have stopped him before that.
- 53:07Speaker 2: I think it could have gone either way. Yes, But
- 53:09Speaker 2: then also except that holding on the last call that
- 53:11Speaker 2: we should have definitely got called on.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Yep. Man, I'm not gonna complain about the rest.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Was that Andrew Marshall all right, I think yes, it
- 53:20Speaker 1: was like it seriously looked like he was trying to
- 53:24Speaker 1: hold him because he knew he got beats. Like it
- 53:26Speaker 1: was one of those like oh crap, I'm beat. I
- 53:28Speaker 1: gotta grab on and get a flag. Otherwise the touchdown
- 53:30Speaker 1: and they didn't even.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Call it because it wasn't a past interference. I do
- 53:34Speaker 2: agree with that call, like it was already past him.
- 53:37Speaker 2: But yeah, definitely upholding. You know, I am pro to admit, like, yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 2: we got away with one there. I don't know, like
- 53:47Speaker 2: I said, we benefited. They were bad both ways.
- 53:53Speaker 1: So it was it was just the first game we've
- 53:55Speaker 1: had inconsistent or I guess, consistently bad officiating.
- 54:00Speaker 3: That's true.
- 54:00Speaker 2: There haven't been any other games where it's like, oh,
- 54:02Speaker 2: that's a bad call, right, there are a couple on
- 54:05Speaker 2: both sides.
- 54:06Speaker 3: Like that's a bad call.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Yeah, p I's spots just yeah, yeah I didn't.
- 54:11Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I didn't even I didn't recognize the head official that
- 54:13Speaker 1: much either from other Big ten games. But guess what,
- 54:16Speaker 1: I guess we were both five and two. But when
- 54:18Speaker 1: you have the eleven AM game on on, sometimes what
- 54:24Speaker 1: happens you don't you don't get the best of the
- 54:26Speaker 1: best a team. All right, well it is officially USC week.
- 54:32Speaker 1: It's I'll just say this. Winning this game made this
- 54:36Speaker 1: week a lot more intriguing and enjoyable.
- 54:38Speaker 3: You lose this game, it takes the pressure. It shouldn't.
- 54:42Speaker 2: It takes the pressure off because it is still tops
- 54:44Speaker 2: on five team and you can't I gotta shake that
- 54:47Speaker 2: monkey too.
- 54:47Speaker 1: But things would have spiraled down in a really really
- 54:53Speaker 1: bad way if we lost to Northwestern we didn't. I mean,
- 54:56Speaker 1: I mean, from a fan point in everything, everybody would
- 54:59Speaker 1: have just been and done, like over this season all really,
- 55:04Speaker 1: and there would have been very little juice for this
- 55:06Speaker 1: Friday or Saturday night game, which has been hyped up,
- 55:10Speaker 1: you know obviously with a blackout and it being the
- 55:12Speaker 1: night after Halloween, first game of November, and it'll it'll
- 55:16Speaker 1: be a really fun atmosphere and we heading into it
- 55:21Speaker 1: because we want. If we would have lost this game,
- 55:24Speaker 1: it would have been very, very different stories.
- 55:26Speaker 2: So I mean, it just makes it so we just
- 55:29Speaker 2: if we go five hundred DA in the year, you
- 55:31Speaker 2: don't feel you want to go warm obviously, but that
- 55:33Speaker 2: means we have a one win over a decent team.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm hoping that doesn't happen. We'll see I while
- 55:44Speaker 1: we're not probably favored or private, you see La, I'm
- 55:47Speaker 1: not sure what that'll be, but will definitely be underdogs.
- 55:49Speaker 1: And the other three I think given the way everybody's
- 55:52Speaker 1: played so far.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Penn State, Penn State could be rough shape because they've
- 55:57Speaker 2: got Ohio, State of Indiana, Michigan State before us.
- 56:02Speaker 1: So I'm I still think, I don't know. I'm just
- 56:09Speaker 1: not gonna be okay with seven wins, eight wins. I'm
- 56:11Speaker 1: even gonna be like, I think we got to get
- 56:13Speaker 1: to nine for me to feel just given this year,
- 56:16Speaker 1: how it's gone on some of these teams, right, Like,
- 56:18Speaker 1: I just and and I'm not saying we can't, We
- 56:20Speaker 1: definitely can't. Yeah, seven is gonna six or sevens obviously
- 56:28Speaker 1: a whole another conversation.
- 56:29Speaker 3: So, okay, are doing a basketball preview this week?
- 56:35Speaker 1: Let's do it this week? Yes, we'll do one. We'll
- 56:37Speaker 1: get one out this week, yep. Because season starts next
- 56:41Speaker 1: week and the guys played a night against Midland exhibition
- 56:44Speaker 1: game at home. We'll get a basketball preview out separate episode.
- 56:51Speaker 3: Volleyball is still undefeated, a big ten play yep.
- 56:54Speaker 1: We're still not losing. Yeah, there's some talk on volleyball
- 56:58Speaker 1: I want to do eventually too, because there we're in
- 57:01Speaker 1: a very good spot right now, which has a lot
- 57:06Speaker 1: of things you can read into. I think that they
- 57:10Speaker 1: are mostly positive, but also like, how do you it's
- 57:15Speaker 1: just unique, right, like to be this dominant and good?
- 57:17Speaker 1: How do you handle that given what happened last year
- 57:20Speaker 1: and everything? So yeah, we'll if that talks some volleyball
- 57:23Speaker 1: here in a little bit too.
- 57:24Speaker 2: I want I want to get your take on the seat,
- 57:26Speaker 2: the season ticket holder seat, reassigning the.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Fire, your.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Little cliffhanger there. So that's good, all right? During your week,
- 57:39Speaker 1: go big red c v R an instruc
