- 0:02Swore I put my hand on the Bible.
- 0:06I am not going to do a coffee with Kenny today.
- 0:10And then all of a sudden Uncle Bob's in town.
- 0:15I sit on the couch with Kim's mom, Dee, and we start talking
- 0:19about always being in a hurry. Uh, urgency.
- 0:25And I want to share this with you all.
- 0:28I grew up in a family where my brother Rusty.
- 0:32Now first of all hold on. It was bad enough that I was
- 0:35born and diagnosed hyperactive by psychiatrist.
- 0:39They they sent me. They said Kenny talk about
- 0:43myself now remember there's three of me so it's fair.
- 0:48It's fair game there's three of me.
- 0:49So I get to talk about me They they said that Kenny he he's a
- 0:57good kid but he he's always, always seeking attention and I
- 1:04was you know diagnosed hyperactive.
- 1:07They said I had a sibling rivalry anyway.
- 1:09I'm all I'm all messed up that's not where I'm going with this.
- 1:13Where I'm going is I was born hyperactive.
- 1:16I wear myself out. I've told you all before I've
- 1:19looked in the mirror and said would you shut the fuck up
- 1:21Herman. Jesus.
- 1:23I wear myself out. Now Fast forward my brother
- 1:27Rusty, my nephew Steven. I would say us three.
- 1:33Mike is calm, but Rusty and Steven and me, we are like the
- 1:38three Amigos. We're crazy in real, you know,
- 1:43crazy people can be successful because we think differently
- 1:47than all the normal people. So anyway, this is about urgency
- 1:53and there's that fine line. So when we would work in the
- 1:57race shop, I mean, Rusty's, we're racing, USAC, we're racing
- 2:01AJ Foyt, We're going to Milwaukee, we're out running AJ
- 2:05Foyt. Rusty's making a name for
- 2:07himself. We're going to Milwaukee.
- 2:08We beat AJ Foyt, we beat Joe Rutman.
- 2:11And we're in the shop and it's 8:00 at night.
- 2:16OK, You you see that right there?
- 2:18That's that's 20 feet from me. Rusty would say, Herman, go grab
- 2:23me a nine sixteenths wrench. If I walked to that toolbox.
- 2:28If I walked to it. Damn it.
- 2:30Run, run. Damn.
- 2:32You see, my face brings back memories.
- 2:38Everything we did back in those days with was with urgency.
- 2:43I mean, we're talking 8:00 at night on a Tuesday night.
- 2:46We're just working. Everything we did was with
- 2:50urgency. Hurry, run.
- 2:52I mean, it was run all the time. Run, run, run, run, run.
- 2:57I often thought to myself as I got older and I probably, I
- 3:03probably got deep into my 30s. I thought, if I keep this pace
- 3:08up, is it going to be hard on my heart?
- 3:11When my heart start pounding, I'm wearing my heart out.
- 3:14Is it going to be hard on my my joints?
- 3:19I don't know yet. I still feel really good at 60
- 3:22years old, but I am able to calm myself down.
- 3:25When people say they they'll, you know, when I'm being
- 3:30interviewed, they'll say what don't people know about Kenny
- 3:33Wallace that you want them to know?
- 3:35I'm like, well, what I want people to know is I love
- 3:38massages, I love candles and I do like to relax and I falls.
- 3:43I fall dead asleep when I go to bed.
- 3:46I don't need nothing. I don't need no pills.
- 3:48I don't cut no shit in half and take a quarter of a pill.
- 3:52I hear these stories. I hear them.
- 3:55I'm not making fun of them. I'm just saying I I think I go
- 4:00so hard the day that when I go to bed at night, I'm like, the
- 4:04last thing I hear is my eyelids shut.
- 4:08So respond right here. What kind of person are you?
- 4:12I read. I read a book by Tony Larussa,
- 4:14the Great manager for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 4:17He says when we compete in sports, you do with urgency,
- 4:21there's no time. And then Kobe Bryant said what's
- 4:26the, you know, what's the biggest, you know, what's the
- 4:30biggest crock of shit? And he said people thinking we
- 4:34have time. So I believe there's different
- 4:38times, right? In other words, boy, we need to,
- 4:42we need to, we need to cut this grass.
- 4:45Well, it might mean tomorrow, not right now, that that's two
- 4:48different times, right? Or you know, there's a tornado
- 4:54coming. We need to get to our basement.
- 4:56That's right now. So there's different things in
- 5:02timing. Now the reason I'm bringing this
- 5:05subject up is I I think I've been able to master calming
- 5:13down. Yes, I do put on a show and yes
- 5:17I'm crazy and yes they took me off for it when and I've learned
- 5:23hell, I'll get in a race car now and I'll say a prayer to calm my
- 5:26calm myself down. All right.
- 5:28Just want to let you all know that there's here's what this
- 5:31video is all about. There's two different urgencies
- 5:34and I explained them to you. So for all my crazies out there,
- 5:40all my crazy people like me breathe.
- 5:46They've checked my blood pressure before races and they
- 5:50said Kenny Wallace, how are you able to stay so calm but appear
- 5:53so crazy? And I said I can calm myself
- 5:58down.
