Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Closure And Continuation With BEN BURROWS From SAME PAINS
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, I'm Ben. I'm the guitarist from Saint Pains.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We're from Makai, Queensland. I guess we're sort of like
- 0:06Speaker 1: not loose Meats every Time I Die sort of type
- 0:10Speaker 1: of music. You know. We've been going for just over
- 0:14Speaker 1: a year now and we're dropping our collection, Closure and Aggregate,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and with the final single, Candle Memory.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah for Ben, thanks for joining us this afternoon.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Pleasure to be here. Thanks for having me my pleasure.
- 0:27Speaker 2: As well, my friends. So, as you say, Saved Pains
- 0:29Speaker 2: are releasing Closure and Aggregate today October the Falls. So
- 0:34Speaker 2: how you feeld about it?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Oh, it's I've been a listen to Getty, that's for sure. Like,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I guess it's been four years in the making, Like
- 0:43Speaker 1: we started writing this, yeah, around twenty nineteen, twenty twenty ish,
- 0:48Speaker 1: So yeah, Bill's there were times where we didn't really think,
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know, we'd ever really get it fully released. So
- 0:55Speaker 1: this is yeah, pretty exciting. We're pretty staked long time coming,
- 0:59Speaker 1: that's for sure.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm quite it interesting that you've described it as a
- 1:03Speaker 2: collection rather than an album or an EP. Would find that.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Sort of like, I guess, like these days, like the
- 1:13Speaker 1: distinction between like albums, singles, EPs. It's all sort of
- 1:16Speaker 1: being screwed up by streaming, Like a lot of bands
- 1:19Speaker 1: just do like nothing but singles, or they'll do like
- 1:23Speaker 1: singles with rolling releases, like they'll release a single then
- 1:26Speaker 1: it will be attached to the next release. So what
- 1:29Speaker 1: we've sort of done is we've released tracks as singles,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but we're releasing it now as a collection, like this
- 1:36Speaker 1: is how it's intended to be listened with interludes, how
- 1:39Speaker 1: the tracks in a twine like interact with each other.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So you could say, I guess, like it's a bit
- 1:46Speaker 1: a little bit pretentious, like we're like, well, let's try
- 1:48Speaker 1: something different. It is an album, I guess, but not
- 1:51Speaker 1: a traditional sort of release where it's like two singles
- 1:54Speaker 1: and then you drop the album. We sort of went
- 1:57Speaker 1: with a different approach like well you can listen to
- 1:59Speaker 1: it individually, and now you can listen to it as
- 2:01Speaker 1: a full collection like this is how we wrote it originally.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I guess. So you have people different perspectives now, like
- 2:09Speaker 1: the lyrics might mean something different than music might interact.
- 2:12Speaker 1: They might listen to the songs differently as well. Are
- 2:15Speaker 1: they inter twie with each other?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Idea, and I also find it interesting that you've called
- 2:22Speaker 2: it closure and aggregate, like it's it's your first thing
- 2:25Speaker 2: coming out. Closure sounds very final.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, people think we're breaking up or something. We've
- 2:30Speaker 1: just packed it in. No, I guess like it's closure
- 2:33Speaker 1: of the first chapter, like because I guess behind the scenes,
- 2:37Speaker 1: a lot of people don't know that we especially at
- 2:40Speaker 1: Big Sound, a lot of people were quite confused. So
- 2:42Speaker 1: they're like, you guys have only been around for like
- 2:44Speaker 1: a year, but you're all older, like you talk like
- 2:48Speaker 1: you've been doing this a while, and I'm like, yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 1: we actually have. Like we've been in other bands in
- 2:53Speaker 1: North Queensland for like collectively like ten years each. And
- 2:58Speaker 1: I guess this is the closure of that chapter in
- 3:00Speaker 1: the first chapter of Same Pains and beginning of the
- 3:04Speaker 1: next for us. So it is a bit funny first
- 3:07Speaker 1: release in a like closure final sort of statement.
- 3:12Speaker 2: A lot better, it makes a lot more sense. So
- 3:16Speaker 2: tell us aut more from a musical point of view then,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and what are you going for?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Ah, Look, it's really hard. Like so me and the
- 3:26Speaker 1: singer and the other guitarist, Jim and Justin we used
- 3:30Speaker 1: to play in a band called Sanctum and Solace years ago,
- 3:34Speaker 1: which was like sort of a hardcore band similar to
- 3:37Speaker 1: like Straight from the Path, sort of normal gene every
- 3:41Speaker 1: Time I Die, which is a big influence us under Oath.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And I guess when that band sort of like just
- 3:49Speaker 1: had its time like ended, I was in another band
- 3:53Speaker 1: called Vasculitis, and the drummer from that band me being
- 3:58Speaker 1: like the common link between them. But let's just start
- 4:01Speaker 1: writing music, Like we got no idea what we want
- 4:03Speaker 1: to go for, like a hardcore band and a deathcore band.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Let's just tune to drop g like whatever comes out
- 4:10Speaker 1: comes out. And I guess we landed in this weird
- 4:14Speaker 1: middle ground of like yeah, noisy hardcore metal core stuff
- 4:19Speaker 1: with like yeah, just heavier bits like the knock close
- 4:22Speaker 1: sort of one gets brought up a lot because we
- 4:24Speaker 1: tuned to the same tuning have some heavy stuff. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's sort of just whatever came to mind, honestly and
- 4:32Speaker 1: what we felt like doing.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You're also announcing a buyer release in multiple stylized variants,
- 4:41Speaker 2: so tell us about that.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Yeah, So we got approached by Alex from Stiff Cut Records,
- 4:48Speaker 1: which is now Breakthrough Records. They merged so it's now
- 4:52Speaker 1: USA partnership. But yeah, he approached us like we might
- 4:57Speaker 1: have approached him. I can't. Jayden, a bass player, was
- 5:00Speaker 1: talking with him initially, but you know, he was just
- 5:03Speaker 1: super stoked to work with us, and we were likewise
- 5:05Speaker 1: with him, and you know, it really helped bring it
- 5:09Speaker 1: to life because we had the vinyl mix done when
- 5:12Speaker 1: we got recorded the album initially just sort of in
- 5:15Speaker 1: the back pocket, like you know, whatever it might happen,
- 5:18Speaker 1: like we'll look into it. But we didn't think too
- 5:21Speaker 1: much of it because we were like, oh, it's you know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: it can take time, it's expensive and takes it could
- 5:26Speaker 1: be difficult to organize, but you know, he's like just
- 5:29Speaker 1: been powering through it. He's been so enthusiastic, like getting
- 5:33Speaker 1: us on board with the variants, Like you know, we're
- 5:37Speaker 1: from the generation that Tony Hawk sort of ruled our
- 5:40Speaker 1: lives on like PlayStation, so we're just and like a
- 5:44Speaker 1: bunch of the guys like skaters for years, and we're
- 5:48Speaker 1: doing the collab with the grind Shrine skate shop as
- 5:51Speaker 1: well for the skateboard. So we just thought it was
- 5:54Speaker 1: so obvious to pay homage to that. And I guess
- 5:57Speaker 1: the Silent Hill Too variant or the one that looks
- 6:01Speaker 1: like a Silent Hill too variant for copyright reasons is
- 6:06Speaker 1: you know, like I guess a part of our imagery,
- 6:09Speaker 1: like we've never really decided like what we pay a
- 6:11Speaker 1: marge to. But yeah, Silent Hill was like a massive
- 6:15Speaker 1: thing for me, like as a video gap, probably explaining
- 6:18Speaker 1: it when I shouldn't have been as a young kid.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Along with that and like Resident Evil, I was way
- 6:22Speaker 1: too young that like parents didn't know. Yeah, like a
- 6:27Speaker 1: lot of that imagery I think comes over with like
- 6:29Speaker 1: the sort of grotesque like mysterious weird like my car.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I'm super into that. So thought thought good to pay
- 6:36Speaker 1: homage to those two sort of pillars from our ears.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And where can people order themselves one of these homages.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So they'll be going live or they are live today?
- 6:49Speaker 1: Through the Breakthrough Records shop, you can order them all
- 6:52Speaker 1: the variants. They're limited numbers, so get them what quickly.
- 6:56Speaker 1: There's also a Believe. It's a builded to build your
- 7:01Speaker 1: own variant. It's one of one I Believe, and it's
- 7:05Speaker 1: an auction. All the money goes to the band. So
- 7:10Speaker 1: you know, I'm not saying go crazy on it, but
- 7:12Speaker 1: like you know, if you want to get your own
- 7:15Speaker 1: unique one of one, same pains closure vinyl and fill
- 7:18Speaker 1: it with I don't know, cheerios or like cocoa pops
- 7:21Speaker 1: or something like. Alex will do anything. I've found he'll
- 7:25Speaker 1: put anything between two pieces of wax. So you know
- 7:28Speaker 1: that's your chance there to go crazy and really impress us.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But yeah, he'll be selling some on tour as well.
- 7:35Speaker 1: But if you want any of the crazy variants, yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 1: go through Breakthrough Records. Fastic.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Now you just mentioned the merch collaboration with Grand Shrines,
- 7:44Speaker 2: tell us a bit more about that.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So, yeah, the Grindstrung guy. So Brenton is a local fella.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know, I don't know him as well as the
- 7:54Speaker 1: other guys, but I've recently gotten to know him a
- 7:56Speaker 1: bit better. You know, he's always rapped us, like he's
- 7:59Speaker 1: you know, been day one er for us before we
- 8:02Speaker 1: were even really a band, like when we're still writing stuff,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like he obviously had demos and stuff. Just always been
- 8:09Speaker 1: super enthusiastic about it. And since he opened his own shop,
- 8:12Speaker 1: he's actually started putting on gigs there in the skate
- 8:15Speaker 1: ramp just as like, you know, it's my shop, I'm
- 8:17Speaker 1: going to do it. I played a while ago might
- 8:21Speaker 1: have a band arcade stories wrapping the shirt. You know,
- 8:25Speaker 1: it's just a sick vibe. Like it's none of the
- 8:29Speaker 1: like bullshit with like regular venues. It's just like show up,
- 8:32Speaker 1: everyone has a good time, the bands play like. It's
- 8:35Speaker 1: a small sort of intimate room too, so it's just
- 8:38Speaker 1: got that awesome vibe. And you know, he's been keen
- 8:40Speaker 1: to get us there for ages, so we're like, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 1: if we're going to do it, let's make it special.
- 8:45Speaker 1: He's been keen to do a collab as well, and
- 8:47Speaker 1: we've been down for it, So yeah, let's do something
- 8:51Speaker 1: that's really special, especially for the community though, because you know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: being from a regional area yourself, you know, like the
- 8:59Speaker 1: metal seat and like hardcore punk scene like all sort
- 9:02Speaker 1: of intertwined into one thing, and like usually you get
- 9:05Speaker 1: other alternative scenes like skating and stuff like that, and
- 9:10Speaker 1: we just wanted to do something that's like, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you guys have been here forever. We want to do
- 9:14Speaker 1: something cool with you like they were the pre day ons,
- 9:18Speaker 1: these people like you know, like so we want to
- 9:21Speaker 1: like just give them something cool. It's for our community.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Now speak of the community. As you mentioned, you guys
- 9:27Speaker 2: are from Mackay and like me being from Kansas, I
- 9:30Speaker 2: understand our. I suppose connection and that way the scene
- 9:37Speaker 2: is there. But you guys are very passionate about about
- 9:40Speaker 2: expanding the scene up there, So like what sorts of
- 9:44Speaker 2: things have you come up with to make that happen?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Well, I guess over the years, like you know, I've
- 9:49Speaker 1: had a hand in running my own shows, like years
- 9:52Speaker 1: ago broad a Night in Texas through like Mackay, like
- 9:55Speaker 1: help run that, help run local shows. Always tried to
- 9:59Speaker 1: bring up bands down South and even from other regional areas,
- 10:03Speaker 1: like I don't know if you remember Terror Aloud that
- 10:06Speaker 1: ran through North Queensland years back. It was like part
- 10:11Speaker 1: of the Terrafest from nohen. You know, it was really
- 10:14Speaker 1: like on a lot of on the groundwork for that,
- 10:16Speaker 1: like putting up posters because I genuinely believe in that
- 10:19Speaker 1: sort of thing and yeah yeah, yeah, Like even like
- 10:24Speaker 1: last week I was out putting up posters in the
- 10:26Speaker 1: CBD because I genuinely believe that works. Still, like people
- 10:29Speaker 1: still see that stuff. Not everyone's deluded to social media here.
- 10:35Speaker 1: You know, Jayden runs a basis, actually runs a company
- 10:38Speaker 1: or co runs a company from Townsvill called Suitable Studio,
- 10:44Speaker 1: who were all about putting on local gigs for all
- 10:47Speaker 1: genres and they always try and bring up new acts
- 10:50Speaker 1: to hear, like, you know, in the past year they
- 10:52Speaker 1: brought through like Broken Earth Revoid. You know, last year
- 10:57Speaker 1: they brought through Liar and Dead Nerve, like trying to
- 11:00Speaker 1: bring out like a lot of these up and coming
- 11:02Speaker 1: heavy acts to say like, hey, there's actually a scene
- 11:04Speaker 1: up here, like people really appreciate it. So when you
- 11:07Speaker 1: guys blow up, keep that in mind, you know, and
- 11:10Speaker 1: obviously helps us to be like, hey, you know, if
- 11:12Speaker 1: you guys come up here to play a show and
- 11:15Speaker 1: we're sick, can we come down there too? And that's
- 11:18Speaker 1: how we built that relationship with the Dead Nor of
- 11:20Speaker 1: guys who are awesome like super Chill. When we did
- 11:23Speaker 1: Sydney and Canberra with them, like that was such an
- 11:26Speaker 1: awesome time.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Same Pains recently were down here in Brisbane as part
- 11:31Speaker 2: of our big sound in Fort Stude Valley. You did
- 11:33Speaker 2: two showcase gigs there. So how did they go?
- 11:37Speaker 1: Oh they were unreal, Like I'll be honest, I was
- 11:40Speaker 1: shipping myself going into it, like because yeah, we'd never
- 11:44Speaker 1: it was really funny we played like Sydney, Canberra, Darwin
- 11:47Speaker 1: before we played Brisbane before the capital city in our
- 11:51Speaker 1: own state. So I was like, we got homies in Brisbane,
- 11:54Speaker 1: like because you know, lots of people from up people
- 11:56Speaker 1: moved there as the next logical step. But yeah, I
- 12:00Speaker 1: was shitting myself because I think I saw the act
- 12:03Speaker 1: that went on before us. I can't remember their name,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but they were a much bigger band than we are,
- 12:10Speaker 1: like they just finished touring Europe. They were a different genre,
- 12:14Speaker 1: but they had a huge showcase crowd, and I was like,
- 12:17Speaker 1: oh God, like we're like the small fish in a
- 12:19Speaker 1: big pond here, like you know, does anyone actually even
- 12:23Speaker 1: know we're here? Like yeah, like I put up ads
- 12:25Speaker 1: and stuff on matter and like Google, but like, oh
- 12:29Speaker 1: my god, like what's gonna happen? Like people gonna show
- 12:31Speaker 1: up like you do your email sprawl to like keep
- 12:34Speaker 1: some people like come check us out. But yeah, both
- 12:37Speaker 1: showcases were awesome. We did Soapbox and like you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I was worried until like as soon as we started,
- 12:45Speaker 1: like the intro to I set, like people poured in
- 12:47Speaker 1: like I've never even seen before, which was awesome. And
- 12:51Speaker 1: then at the bright side, like the room was just packed.
- 12:54Speaker 1: There were a lot of people that I recognized, but
- 12:56Speaker 1: then there were people I didn't know, like Brownie from
- 12:59Speaker 1: War of Sound was stoked on the whole set, Like, yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: just so many people. Alex from Stiff Gard actually showed
- 13:09Speaker 1: up as well, just to see us. Tim from Obsolete Bookings,
- 13:14Speaker 1: Tim Knowles absolute legend shout out just Looses Unit Ever,
- 13:20Speaker 1: he showed up to see us too, and got to
- 13:23Speaker 1: finally meet him in person, and yeah, it was amazing,
- 13:26Speaker 1: Like couldn't couldn't have asked for a better big sound,
- 13:29Speaker 1: especially for a band that's only really been around for
- 13:33Speaker 1: just a year and a bit now a year and
- 13:34Speaker 1: two months.
- 13:38Speaker 2: And this weekend you're performing as part of Rhythm and
- 13:42Speaker 2: the Reef Festival, So tell us about that one.
- 13:45Speaker 1: So that was a bit of an odd one, but
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna send it and have a good time.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So yeah, you probably see the poster. We're playing festival
- 13:54Speaker 1: with like blissinessa like sneaky sound system and you know
- 13:59Speaker 1: the organ as a Delainey. He's a really cool dude.
- 14:02Speaker 1: He's sort of given us this opportunity, do you know,
- 14:06Speaker 1: just try and expose ourselves because I'm fairly certain the
- 14:10Speaker 1: festivals almost sold out if it won't be by the
- 14:13Speaker 1: end of this week. But yeah, he's really given us
- 14:18Speaker 1: this opportunity to expose ourselves to people who normally wouldn't
- 14:21Speaker 1: know about our shows or go to them, and also
- 14:25Speaker 1: just the opportunity to play at such a large festival
- 14:28Speaker 1: as well, even like just get to know some of
- 14:31Speaker 1: the people and the other acts as well, get the experience,
- 14:34Speaker 1: because I've never in all my years, I've never actually
- 14:37Speaker 1: played a festival that size, because usually when they come
- 14:40Speaker 1: through here, they're very limited in scale, Like I think
- 14:44Speaker 1: the only ones that ever had heavy acts for the
- 14:46Speaker 1: Groove and the Moon festivals that came through Townsville, but
- 14:49Speaker 1: then it was like one band, like usually I think
- 14:51Speaker 1: Architects played one year, like just just random heavy acts.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So yeah, sort of all just fell into place. We're
- 15:00Speaker 1: definitely also nervous about that one because I'm not sure
- 15:04Speaker 1: if there's much crossover between the Bliss and es So
- 15:07Speaker 1: crowd than us, But hey, like you know, just try,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Let's let's send it, you know, let's just do it.
- 15:13Speaker 1: That's the worst. The worst we can do is get
- 15:15Speaker 1: the power Cup to our set for being too loud.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Probably that's about it, and then.
- 15:20Speaker 2: My correcting saying that you are the only heavy band
- 15:22Speaker 2: on the whole lineup.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say so, Like Giant Palms are sick,
- 15:27Speaker 1: they're more like a I guess they're more like a
- 15:30Speaker 1: skate rock band. They're they're cool guys, like all really
- 15:32Speaker 1: young dudes. I look like a young dude myself, and
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm deceivingly older than I look. But yeah, they're like,
- 15:41Speaker 1: they're they're cool guys, like I'm stoked to be playing
- 15:44Speaker 1: alongside them. But yeah, we're the only band that sounds
- 15:47Speaker 1: like we do on the lineup. So definitely, definitely an
- 15:51Speaker 1: interesting one. I think the festival organizer was interested, I
- 15:55Speaker 1: think to see how our set goes in the response.
- 15:59Speaker 1: So we'll definitely give a ra game. So hopefully next year.
- 16:02Speaker 1: You know, that gives an incentive to put on more
- 16:04Speaker 1: heavy acts, not not just ourselves, like but you know,
- 16:07Speaker 1: other heavy bands too, and give more exposure to the
- 16:10Speaker 1: regional areas.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Give him hell Runner, give him hell hell. Yeah. Now
- 16:15Speaker 2: before the end of the year, you've also got our
- 16:18Speaker 2: weekend trips played to Brisbane and Sydney as well, so
- 16:20Speaker 2: tell us about those shows.
- 16:22Speaker 1: So we're still in the stage of planning them out,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Like we're sort of looking towards end of November. Nothing
- 16:31Speaker 1: concrete yet, so I'm not promising anything to anyone. Jaden's
- 16:37Speaker 1: the bass player, he's the brains behind all that, and
- 16:40Speaker 1: we're sort of leaving the ball in his court to
- 16:42Speaker 1: try and get it up and running. Yeah, we're hoping
- 16:47Speaker 1: to get those out by the end of the year.
- 16:48Speaker 1: We did really want to do Melbourne. That's like the
- 16:51Speaker 1: one major capital city besides Adelaide we hadn't done. We
- 16:56Speaker 1: were probably even going to try and do those in
- 16:57Speaker 1: the same weekend, but that's probably looking like twenty twenty
- 17:00Speaker 1: five thing at this stage. Yeah, we're just keen to
- 17:04Speaker 1: just send it before the end of the year, hopefully
- 17:06Speaker 1: gets some SEQ stuff done and if we can fit
- 17:09Speaker 1: it in, get back to New South Wales because it
- 17:11Speaker 1: was fun as Hellcassy.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Well, that's all in the future, bro, But for the
- 17:16Speaker 2: immediate future, you do have the collection closure and Aggregate
- 17:20Speaker 2: which is out today, So I suggest that perhaps there
- 17:24Speaker 2: is around it gets behind you boys and gives you
- 17:26Speaker 2: a bit of a push.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's all I reckon too, right, Yeah, brother,
- 17:31Speaker 1: we'll make sure you keep in contacting.
- 17:32Speaker 2: If you make it to Brisbane, let me know and
- 17:34Speaker 2: we'll catch up and have a beer.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll do it. Sounds like a good time, man,
