  Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do

  a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,

  maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.

  And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state

  meet or do you qualify for states?

  even you Washington, DC so that we can learn a little bit about

  the outdoor track and field series in every state.

  And I'm super excited. It's actually a state I used to

  live in. So I'm really excited about

  Welcome to talk about the great state of Nevada, Mr. Roy Session

  from Centennial High School. Roy, how are you doing today

  I'm doing awesome, man. Hey, just want to say publicly
• 1:37
  thank you. You know, as we are going along
• 1:39
  and doing each one of these states, it doesn't happen
• 1:41
  without servant leaders like yourself.

  So from all of us at Gil, just truly grateful that you step up

  and represent this great state. And we're truly excited to learn
• 1:49
  more about how you guys do things out there in Nevada

  and serving leaders is what I do.

  I just retired from the fire department, so man, well, Gee,

  you know, I'm a track coach is a pretty high profession for me in
• 2:06
  my mind. Firefighter you you know, that's
• 2:08
  a little bit up there, maybe past.

  Well Roy, why don't we get to know you here just a little bit
• 2:16
  better before we get into Nevada specifically, why don't you give
• 2:19
  us a a 32nd 30,000 foot level. Why should you know someone from
• 2:24
  Virginia is going to be like why should I listen to Coach Roy
• 2:27
  about Nevada? Kind of give us some some St.
• 2:29
  cred if you will. OK, so I've been coaching for 30
• 2:32
  plus years, primarily with the youth programs.
• 2:36
  In the last 15 years I took over Centennial High School.
• 2:39
  We've been very successful, probably the most successful
• 2:41
  program in in Nevada state history.
• 2:44
  I'm a level 2 business mid distance coach as well as a head
• 2:47
  coach, USATF head coach. Let's see, we've won 12 of the
• 2:52
  last 13 state championships from the girls side and I won six of
• 2:57
  the last, I guess 13 years on the boys side.
• 3:00
  I've got four across the country and the biggest vision in the
• 3:02
  state of course each you know the five A is the biggest vision
• 3:04
  here in the state. I've got a great staff.
• 3:08
  All my my coaches, either they're all level one or level 2
• 3:11
  or all PTS. We have been doing this for a
• 3:14
  while and so a lot of kids know that if you're going to come
• 3:17
  here, this is probably the place to be.
• 3:19
  I run, I run a program that's citywide.
• 3:21
  My club is citywide as well called Nevada Track Club.
• 3:24
  So we could kiss them all over the all over the state and all
• 3:27
  over the city. And and our biggest thing is
• 3:30
  that we get kids to college that's that's that's number one
• 3:32
  for us a system if they choose to go.
• 3:35
  If not we don't enjoy the sport. You know if they want to go to
• 3:37
  college we all assist them somewhere at some level.
• 3:40
  You know all kids think that oh D1D1.
• 3:42
  But if you can get somewhere in AIA, if I can get you to D2D3,
• 3:47
  we're going to get you to school if if you come put into work and
• 3:49
  want to work for. So it's kind of who I am because
• 3:51
  I've been coaching for a long time.
• 3:53
  That's awesome. Sounds like we got the right guy
• 3:54
  for Nevada. So this this is perfect.
• 3:56
  We should be all oh, good. OK and good today.
• 3:59
  So, all right, well, let's get into it here, Roy.

  So we've learned. Not many, but some states will
• 4:06
  have a separate organizing body for private schools and they
• 4:10
  have their own state championship and then a separate
• 4:12
  one for public schools and they have their own state
• 4:14
  championships. Most states we're learning or or
• 4:17
  both the combined public and private are fighting it out
• 4:19
  towards the same state state championship.
• 4:21
  Let's start with Nevada. What do we do in private and
• 4:23
  public schools? OK.
• 4:26
  In track and field, it's 11 state championship.
• 4:30
  There is multiple divisions, of course, you know, the bigger
• 4:32
  school, the bigger division. But the the bigger school like
• 4:35
  you know going football #1 the nation football but they still
• 4:38
  competed with us in track and field.
• 4:40
  So it is one state championship. It's it's kind of you've lived
• 4:46
  here so you know so we have the northern and the southern, so
• 4:48
  it's the northern region against the southern region and that's
• 4:51
  how you divide our just pick our state champion you know so the
• 4:54
  top four from down here let's learn about that here in a
• 4:57
  second. Let's first get into SO.
• 4:58
  So we hear public and private are both working towards the
• 5:01
  same state championship. You already mentioned a 5A.
• 5:05
  Let's talk about that. How many classes do we have in
• 5:07
  Nevada? You have five classes, OK.
• 5:12
  So we go 5A4A all the way down to 1A.
• 5:15
  And did you say to 1A5A is our bigger schools enrollment?
• 5:19
  Yes. Perfect.
• 5:20
  We, we do a little different in, in Vegas now it's used to be by
• 5:24
  enrollment they do what's called a rubric now in this town.
• 5:28
  So based on how your overall sports programs did?
• 5:33
  Is depending so if if my school has a great football,
• 5:38
  basketball, baseball you wind up in the bigger division because
• 5:41
  most of the the bigger schools in Vegas over 3000 kids.
• 5:44
  So they had to figure a way to kind of manage that.
• 5:47
  So 5A for us is 12 schools from the the South against the top
• 5:52
  five a schools in the north. Oh, OK.
• 5:55
  That's interesting. 5A Division. Yeah, that's unique.
• 5:58
  Awesome. Love that.
• 5:59
  OK, so we have in the spring, we have 5 boys teams that are
• 6:04
  working that are going to earn a state title and five girls teams
• 6:07
  that are going to earn a state title in the state of Nevada.
• 6:10
  So let's talk about how we get there.
• 6:12
  All around the country, these rounds are called areas,
• 6:16
  sectionals, divisionals, regionals, all these different
• 6:18
  names. What's the first round in Nevada
• 6:21
  called? Regionals Regional.
• 6:24
  OK, let's talk with Regionals first before we move on
• 6:27
  regionals, how do I enter Regionals?
• 6:30
  Meaning do I get 2 per event? Is there a qualifying standard?
• 6:33
  How do I get my kids as we start to work towards?
• 6:36
  OK. There's a qualifying standard
• 6:39
  that you have to and you can get each group, get up to four
• 6:41
  positions in that region will be based on if you have 4 kids get
• 6:45
  those qualifying standards. But if you don't have anyone
• 6:48
  reach that standard, you get one Guinea, understand.
• 6:50
  So you don't have anybody make the two mile time, for example,
• 6:53
  they're going to give you one entry into regionals, got it?
• 6:56
  So I get one no matter what and then I get a qualifying standard
• 7:01
  that I can Max out at 4 per events if they hit the
• 7:06
  qualifying standard per school, right?
• 7:08
  Is that qualifying standard? How was that typically set?
• 7:13
  It's usually based on the 8th place finisher from the state
• 7:16
  meet the year before from the state meet.
• 7:18
  Got it perfect. So if I have 5 stud quarter
• 7:22
  Millers, I can enter four and even though that fifth one has
• 7:26
  meet the qualifying standard, he or she's going to figure out the
• 7:29
  800 or the 200 or some other event a relay.
• 7:31
  Etcetera. And it it happens every year.
• 7:34
  It happens every year I I leave at least three kids home every
• 7:38
  year. That would have been.
• 7:41
  Go ahead. Right.
• 7:42
  Yeah. Yeah.

  No, you're you're right. I was going to say save that.

  Yeah, that that might be your magic wand at the end.

  We we, we we're just going through the facts right now.

  So I go to Regionals. I enter my kids.
• 7:53
  I get a maximum of four per event.
• 7:55
  I'm assuming it's one per relay. Yes, one relay.

  OK, just checking. Never know, there might be some
• 8:01
  craziness out there in Vegas in a Nevada.
• 8:04
  All right, so now I'm at the regional meet, what do I have to
• 8:07
  do to get to the next round and what is that next round?
• 8:10
  Is that next round state? Area next round for us would be
• 8:12
  state perfect. OK, OK the top four I make the
• 8:17
  state championship got it. And each event and the top 4
• 8:21
  relays so you get 4 from the southern and four from the
• 8:24
  northern region. Make state so only eight kids
• 8:30
  per event at the state meet. Yes, interesting.
• 8:33
  So no, no, there's no prelims and things like that.
• 8:36
  So everybody. There's no prelims.
• 8:38
  You get one shot and it and you said top four, so no qualifying
• 8:43
  standards are out. That's.
• 8:43
  Only for regionals it is top four we're going to to the state
• 8:47
  meet. Yep.
• 8:48
  Going to state meet? Yep, you look like you had some
• 8:50
  opinions on that. Don't.
• 8:51
  Don't. Yeah, not yet.

  Not yet. I love it.

  OK, well, I mean, that's pretty cut and dry.

  I love that. So let's talk about the state
• 8:59
  meet. Is the state meet typically at a
• 9:00
  college? A high school?
• 9:02
  Does it rotate? Are all, you know there's ten
• 9:04
  state championships, right? Boys and girls. 5A all the way
• 9:07
  down to 1A. Are all all ten of those meets
• 9:09
  held at the same venue? Same weekend, 2 day meet, Three
• 9:12
  day meet. Let's hear about the state meet.

  OK. So our state meet is 2 days and
• 9:19
  typically the five a the bigger state meet is ran separate.
• 9:23
  From maybe 4A because there's no 4A teams in the north.
• 9:29
  OK, so our state meet for the 4A division is basically a city
• 9:32
  championship. You say that there's there's no
• 9:34
  state and that's important to note here, Roy.
• 9:36
  Let's let's make sure. Everybody hears this.
• 9:39
  You know, what we're learning with all these state meets is,
• 9:41
  you know, it states, because of geography, sometimes have to do
• 9:44
  things differently. And when we're talking about
• 9:46
  Nevada, while it is a big state, square miles, it's populated,
• 9:51
  you know, I'm going to say 90%. I don't know what the actual
• 9:53
  number is, but the vast majority is in the Las Vegas area, not so
• 9:58
  much N So in the foray you're saying there are no forays up
• 10:01
  north. It's.
• 10:02
  It's in the city. Yes.
• 10:04
  So to answer your question, most of the meets you held in a high
• 10:07
  school. OK.
• 10:09
  And we rotate. So the state championship is in
• 10:12
  the southern section, Las Vegas one year and the next year it's
• 10:16
  in Reno. Those are our two biggest
• 10:18
  populous areas. So rotate from Reno to Vegas,
• 10:20
  you alternate every other year and are we doing you said the 5A
• 10:26
  is kind of done separately is are four so. 5A5A3A2A1A are all
• 10:32
  at the same location because they have those schools up
• 10:35
  north. They don't have 4A up north, so
• 10:38
  it's 5A3A2A1A4A state meters ran separately every year,
• 10:43
  regardless if it's Reno. Regardless, because there's
• 10:46
  because there's no 4A teams in the North, so is 532 and one all
• 10:52
  the same weekend, same place either in Vegas or Reno.
• 10:56
  Correct. And then 4A is.
• 10:59
  Separate usually in Vegas only. So it it's in Vegas, they are
• 11:03
  trying to get it to where the 4A can run with the 5A4A3A2A1A when
• 11:08
  it's in the southern section, but they don't travel to Reno
• 11:11
  with the 4A section. Yeah, that makes sense.
• 11:13
  But I would have thought they would have anytime it's it isn't
• 11:16
  the Vegas rotation, they would just automatically plug in, but
• 11:18
  then you get scheduling that changes then I guess.
• 11:20
  Right. That that changes the schedule
• 11:22
  and then you have to now worry about the length of the meet the
• 11:25
  recovery time all those things you have to think about those
• 11:28
  things and we're a two day meet and so we're running you know
• 11:31
  four meets you know again 8 cause boys and girls on a 2 day
• 11:35
  meet so are you doing is all 5A. You know you're doing the
• 11:38
  hundred 400 mile long jump and then all that's done and then we
• 11:42
  move to the 3A and then you know they do their.
• 11:45
  OK, so we're doing five, 800-3800 to 800-1800, then we go
• 11:51
  to the hurdle for example. Perfect.
• 11:53
  Those are still long days though.
• 11:54
  I mean four they were. Very, very long days.
• 11:57
  And you know, the Vegas heat. So yeah, I do.

  Actually. I didn't.

  I was a professional poker player.
• 12:02
  It was always 70 degrees inside of a poker room, man.

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was only hot for like a brief
• 12:07
  10 minute drive into the city. Yeah, all right.

  Hey, that's really cool. That's interesting.

  That's unique about the foray cause again, you know, we we've
• 12:16
  heard of all these different states that have, you know, 5-6
• 12:18
  classes, but they're typically all in the same place or they
• 12:21
  have a plan. This is interesting that foray
• 12:23
  kind of, yeah, I'll be careful of my words here.
• 12:26
  They're they're they're unique over on the side because they
• 12:28
  don't have any northern schools. Correct.
• 12:32
  And that was because the northern schools chose to do
• 12:34
  that. So the bigger northern schools
• 12:37
  wanted to be 5A. And the the association, I gave
• 12:40
  them an option because the other schools are three A2A1,
• 12:43
  everybody usually pretty small schools And so the there's not
• 12:47
  very I think there's maybe 8 high schools in Reno area for
• 12:51
  example and they chose to do 5A and because of the buzzing
• 12:54
  situation and the travel you know the district decided we
• 12:57
  can't you know do everyone in the same time.
• 13:00
  So this sounds fairly unique, this northern southern split
• 13:04
  then. So do you have almost like I
• 13:07
  don't want to say two different rule sets overall, but do you
• 13:09
  have two almost like different organizations that are running N
• 13:13
  school South school sections? Yes, there is a Southern Section
• 13:18
  Coaches Association and and there's Northern Section.
• 13:21
  So they're run 22 totally separate organizations.
• 13:24
  How's the they're? Over the same umbrella?
• 13:28
  Really, I'm not asking for specifics.
• 13:31
  So what you you just answered that question.

  Actually, coach, so not copacetic and everything.

  We're not agreeing with everything here, North and South
• 13:39
  sections. Right.
• 13:40
  No, no, not at all. I don't agree to go up there for
• 13:44
  example, you know the elevation is we're talking, it changes the
• 13:47
  dynamics of everything. But competing up there, you know
• 13:50
  we're we're sitting at 2000 feet, they're sitting at 9000
• 13:53
  feet. So for cross country for
• 13:55
  example, when they're talking about that, it changes dynamics
• 13:57
  of the whole race. You may be if that's a team in
• 14:00
  the state and don't accomplish anything when you get up there.
• 14:03
  You get past 800. That's a little different.
• 14:05
  This makes sense. You know, I think about like a
• 14:07
  state like Illinois that very much like what you're describing
• 14:09
  feels like it's two different states inside of 1 state, you
• 14:12
  know north and the South, very different economics and
• 14:15
  populations. Illinois, we we have Chicago and
• 14:18
  the rest. So there's a lot of you know
• 14:21
  it's not right. I know that works for you
• 14:22
  Chicago, but that doesn't work for us down in Carbondale and
• 14:25
  vice versa. So that that that makes sense.

  OK. Good.

  Perfect. That is a unique state you have.

  NN Tahoe, for example, is considered Nevada.

  Even though it's California school because of the geographic
• 14:36
  location, they compete within our state meeting.

  Yeah, yeah, that makes all the sense in the world.

  I say sarcastically. Yeah.

  All right, let's keep moving down, Roy.

  You know, what we do know is that track and field is the most
• 14:51
  inclusive sport in the world. Tall, short, big, small.
• 14:54
  There is some event for you to achieve some success inside of
• 14:58
  our sport. What we've been learning is some
• 15:00
  states, a good amount of states have been adding adaptive,
• 15:04
  unified wheelchair type events to their state meet.
• 15:07
  We got anything like that going on in Nevada?
• 15:09
  We do. If you have the, if you have the
• 15:12
  students that need that accommodation, we do.
• 15:14
  We've had a wheelchair race three years ago, but it's it's
• 15:19
  very rare. We didn't last year.
• 15:20
  For example, if you have an athlete that has a measles
• 15:24
  accommodation, they do. They don't score in the state
• 15:26
  meet, for example, but they do compete in the state meet.
• 15:29
  They won a state championship separate from Able Bodies for a
• 15:33
  second. Well, I'm happy and proud of
• 15:35
  Nevada coaches that there's an opportunity for inclusion there
• 15:37
  that it's not, hey, we don't do it.
• 15:39
  It's like, hey, yeah, if there's a need for it, we will
• 15:42
  absolutely do it. I love that.
• 15:43
  Great. So when we went to Reno, all the
• 15:44
  kids they had, they took them on the they got a bus specifically
• 15:48
  for that could hold a wheelchair.
• 15:49
  He grew up with us up to the state meet and compete up in
• 15:51
  Reno. Awesome.

  Love it. All right, so in Nevada, we've
• 15:54
  got 500 meter state champ boys and 500 meter state champ girls.

  Some states, whether it's officially through the
• 16:02
  association or through call it unofficially through an coaches
• 16:06
  association, they'll do some type of meet a champs.
• 16:09
  You know, we'll get maybe the top two or three from each event
• 16:11
  and air courtier find the true state champion.

  Anything like that going on? No, I I wish it was it.
• 16:18
  It is not. Once we're done for the year,
• 16:22
  most kids go to club to start traveling.
• 16:24
  Perfect. All right, well, let's talk

  about some events that you have there.
• 16:27
  Let's go through group by group. Here we can assume you're doing
• 16:30
  the 1-2, the four and the eight for boys and girls.

  Correct. The next two events are you
• 16:35
  doing the 1632, the mile two mile, the fifteen 3000, what are
• 16:39
  we doing in those next two? 1632 That's the most common
• 16:44
  perfect we're doing, the 110 highs and the 100 highs for both
• 16:47
  boys and girls. Correct.
• 16:49
  We're doing the 300 hurdles. Yes, awesome.

  On the relay front, we know you're doing the four by one and
• 16:54
  four by four because if you're not, you're not really doing
• 16:56
  track and field and you wouldn't be on this podcast.

  What other relays might we be doing?

  Four by two is a state scored meet and four by eight or is a
• 17:04
  state scored event. No Sprint medleys.

  All right, so we're doing 4 by 1, four by two, 4x4 and four by

  All right, let's go to the field events.

  We're doing long jump and triple jump for boys and girls.

  We need that sometimes. If you've been listening to all

  50 states up here to, you know, now we're in Nevada, you know,

  there's some states it's like, man, I can't even get my head

  wrapped around it. So we need some some of this to

  to curb us sometimes. I love that.

  But now Speaking of some of those events, again, kind of
• 17:55
  like the meet of champions, some states will do an unofficial
• 17:58
  state championship for a multi eyes or hammer or javelin.

  Anything like that you're aware of, you kind of already looted.

  Most people. We cut over.

  To yeah most people kind of we start now you have multi kids
• 18:07
  that are trained and go compete at in Albuquerque for great
• 18:10
  Southwest that they can you can throw jab at the college so
• 18:13
  they'll practice jab at the college or hammer.

  We do indoor stuff but it's the same thing.
• 18:19
  We travel for that, but nothing unofficial official.
• 18:22
  Before we get to a couple of fun questions here, coach, anything
• 18:25
  else unique that we should know? Something I didn't ask you.

  You double your relay points. You only score 6 points or six
• 18:32
  places. You run the four by four at
• 18:35
  midnight because that's a Nevada tradition.
• 18:36
  I don't know. Anything else unique that we
• 18:38
  need to know that I didn't ask? No we're we're pretty cut and
• 18:42
  dry. I mean we're actually pretty
• 18:44
  pretty straightforward other than the the you can go from 4A
• 18:47
  to 5A if you if your your school had a great year for example.
• 18:52
  You know all your sports back up.
• 18:53
  Every two years they re evaluate what was called a rubric.

  That's the only thing I would say with different You don't.

  You're not stuck to 5A if you're if you're finishing eighth or
• 19:01
  you're not getting anybody in the state media.

  Every year you make a move down to four a be a 4A state champion

  and that's a year by year basis. Every two years.

  high school athletes it could be adding event, taking away event,

  there? That's true.

  A true state champion. Because there are times when you
• 20:12
  do have a four year athlete or or every A3A2A1 athlete that's
• 20:17
  an outlier that outruns of 5A people or I'll jump something.

  It'd be nice to have them be the champion, something to say the
• 20:24
