- 0:00Speaker 1: Kids today, it's one more thing. I'm strong and getty.
- 0:04Speaker 2: One more.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Got something serious but interesting that at least I didn't
- 0:13Speaker 1: know coming up on a second. But first this my
- 0:16Speaker 1: son who's fourteen and graduating from eighth grade this week graduating.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So he actually asked, why do they have eighth grade graduation? Well,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I don't know the real answer, but where I grew up,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I thought it was because a lot of people stopped
- 0:36Speaker 1: going to school at eighth grade. There was a good
- 0:39Speaker 1: chunk of the class that or a particular religion, the Mennonites,
- 0:43Speaker 1: they stopped at eighth grade. So I thought that's why
- 0:45Speaker 1: we had eighth grade graduation because they were done. But
- 0:48Speaker 1: then found out they have eighth grade graduations other places,
- 0:51Speaker 1: So why does eighth grade graduation exist?
- 0:54Speaker 3: You know? I actually heard a really interesting argument about
- 0:58Speaker 3: this once we're The One point of view was, hey,
- 1:02Speaker 3: they've finished a level of school. Let's say let's show them, Hey,
- 1:07Speaker 3: education is important, we're proud of you, a good job.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Let's reinforce wanting to stay in school and pass everything,
- 1:14Speaker 3: which I think is a perfectly reasonable point of view.
- 1:16Speaker 3: The opposition was a woman who was saying, they haven't
- 1:19Speaker 3: accomplished anything. They're getting the very basics of education their kids.
- 1:24Speaker 3: They've got several more years of mandatory schooling. They haven't
- 1:27Speaker 3: accomplished anything. They barely gotten started. Quit with the ceremonies.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Too many ceremonies.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I lean more towards that point of view.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Anything that would less than the number of ceremonies I
- 1:39Speaker 3: have to go to. I'm in favor of.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Yes, my mom has a picture of my Is it
- 1:43Speaker 4: my kindergarten graduation or my preschool graduation? I don't remember it.
- 1:47Speaker 4: I'm wearing a robe. I know she had to buy
- 1:49Speaker 4: a robe. Yeah, I'm warning a little green graduation cap
- 1:53Speaker 4: and robe. And they took pictures that she obviously paid
- 1:56Speaker 4: for because we have it.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So I'm thinking you've got money sucked out of that.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we we had to do kindergarten graduation and
- 2:01Speaker 1: there was like a certificate and stuff. But I don't
- 2:04Speaker 1: think there was no robe involved.
- 2:05Speaker 3: But you know, I hate to blame the gals for this,
- 2:09Speaker 3: but it reminds me of little seven year old kids
- 2:11Speaker 3: in full.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Uniform playing Little League and they.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Have opening ceremonies and closing ceremonies every season, and the
- 2:19Speaker 3: parade of the teams and lots of pictures in the
- 2:22Speaker 3: rest of it. Back in the day, you just went
- 2:25Speaker 3: and played ball. There's no opening ceremony. What the hell
- 2:28Speaker 3: do you have an opening ceremony. First game of the
- 2:29Speaker 3: year is on Saturday, Go play it. That was the
- 2:32Speaker 3: opening ceremony.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Play ball.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So my eighth grader has the graduations actually on Thursday,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and you're supposed to wear a tie, So we have
- 2:40Speaker 1: to go out and get a tie at some point
- 2:42Speaker 1: this week. He's gonna wear my shirt and my pants
- 2:45Speaker 1: because we're the same size. Oh, and it's gonna be hot. Uh,
- 2:48Speaker 1: he can't wear my shoes because he has bigger feet
- 2:50Speaker 1: than me. But so I have to get him some
- 2:51Speaker 1: dress shoes and a tie, and it is gonna be hot.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But the night before there's a big dance, the very
- 2:58Speaker 1: first dance of his life. Oh boy, And he said
- 3:03Speaker 1: the other day, I sure hope there's chairs because I
- 3:05Speaker 1: planned to sit.
- 3:09Speaker 4: It's so funny the difference between guys and gals with
- 3:12Speaker 4: this one, Like I was so excited and you want
- 3:15Speaker 4: to chair to sit?
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, I know I know that that's true. I'm
- 3:20Speaker 1: sure the girls are very very excited. I was gonna talk.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I haven't talked to him about that. I hint it
- 3:24Speaker 1: ad but I was gonna talk to him specifically about
- 3:27Speaker 1: and I haven't completely crafted it into my head yet,
- 3:30Speaker 1: And it probably won't do any good anyway, cause it's
- 3:35Speaker 1: different when you're fourteen than when you're older. And looking
- 3:37Speaker 1: back on being fourteen, but man, oh man, oh man,
- 3:41Speaker 1: there's so many things that I chickened out of or
- 3:43Speaker 1: kind of wish I had done or whatever. You only
- 3:46Speaker 1: live once. You only freaking live once. That girl over there,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you kind of like, go ask her to dance. Good, God,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I gotta figure out how I want to present it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Not like that, but I mean, looking at talking to
- 3:59Speaker 1: my eighth grade me, I mean, just life is short. Yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 1: one go round.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Yeah, here's here's.
- 4:07Speaker 1: What you gotta do.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Maybe I'll offer this service.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'll come over with half a dozen middle school young ladies,
- 4:18Speaker 3: have your boy, ask each one of them to dance.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Each one of them will say thanks, but no, I'm
- 4:23Speaker 3: not interested. And by the end of maybe we'll even
- 4:26Speaker 3: do two rounds. By the end of it that it'll
- 4:28Speaker 3: be like that's fine.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Whatever. Oh they just get used to get down. It
- 4:32Speaker 1: used to be rejected a couple.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Of times, or they might be completely demoralized. But uh no,
- 4:38Speaker 3: maybe you have that thirteenth one say.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd love to Did you ask somebody to dance? Michael?
- 4:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I did. I usually got rejected, so
- 4:45Speaker 5: it's okay.
- 4:46Speaker 1: I didn't ask anybody to dance. Somebody asked me to
- 4:48Speaker 1: dance for the last slow dance of the night, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: I've never been more nervous in my life. I can
- 4:53Speaker 1: I still feel the sweat running down my armpits as
- 4:57Speaker 1: we were slow dancing. I was so nervous and scared.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But why wouldn't you? I mean, and I kind of
- 5:02Speaker 1: wanted to dance, but I was scared at one of
- 5:05Speaker 1: being rejected and two of dancing in front of other people.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's just God, when you get older, it just seems like,
- 5:09Speaker 1: why would you freaking care? But that's just the perspective
- 5:12Speaker 1: of age. You can't you know, you can't inject that
- 5:15Speaker 1: into someone.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Well, yeah, and dances are so small in our lives now.
- 5:19Speaker 4: It's such a big thing to them, right.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Well, yeah, of course it is. And I'm you know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: so on one hand, I don't know about his friends,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but it's probably true for his friends too. On one hand,
- 5:27Speaker 1: he's I hope they have chairs there. I might bring
- 5:30Speaker 1: my own camping chair just so I make sure. But
- 5:33Speaker 1: he has.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Uh.
- 5:34Speaker 1: We got a haircut two weeks ago and he wasn't
- 5:36Speaker 1: quite happy with that, so we went and got another haircut,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and uh, you know, he's been picking out his clothes.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So I mean, you wouldn't get two haircuts and pick
- 5:43Speaker 1: out your clothes and all this sort of stuff if
- 5:46Speaker 1: you didn't care at all. So you care, but you
- 5:49Speaker 1: just don't want to look like you care, because I'm
- 5:51Speaker 1: sure none of your friends are looking like they care.
- 5:54Speaker 1: As the boys again, as the girls you get you
- 5:56Speaker 1: can be as thrilled as you want to be. Lots
- 5:57Speaker 1: of exclamation points if.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You're Yeah, I played the records at the dances I
- 6:04Speaker 3: came in middle school. I volunteered for that. I think
- 6:06Speaker 3: it's one of the reasons I became a musician. If
- 6:08Speaker 3: I'm playing, you can't ask me to dance.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I'm busy. All the high school dances, I was the DJ,
- 6:13Speaker 1: which kind of got me out of it. I got
- 6:15Speaker 1: to be there, but I had a job. Yeah, but
- 6:18Speaker 1: uh yeah, so I don't know. I'm gonna try to
- 6:20Speaker 1: craft some sort of go for it type speech, see
- 6:24Speaker 1: how it lands. But I can just think of several
- 6:28Speaker 1: examples of like, why why didn't you? Why didn't you
- 6:30Speaker 1: do this? Why didn't you do that? There's no downside.
- 6:33Speaker 1: The worst case scenario is nothing. Well, actually a worst
- 6:37Speaker 1: case scenario is not doing anything then wishing the rest
- 6:40Speaker 1: of your life you would have tried. So, yeah, hear hair,
- 6:45Speaker 1: So that'said. He bought a fake rolex off of Amazon.
- 6:48Speaker 1: He totally cares.
- 6:50Speaker 4: He totally caress cool to not care, but yeah, he cares.
- 6:56Speaker 1: He bought this fake rolex. It's forty dollars and it's
- 6:58Speaker 1: so shockingly great. I mean it's really really good. It's
- 7:02Speaker 1: like really heavy and nice and yeah, very cool.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I think you may be admitting to a federal offense
- 7:10Speaker 3: harboring a known importer of repbove.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Counterfeit good got it off Amazon. So here's the serious
- 7:20Speaker 1: thing I was going to do, which feels weird now,
- 7:22Speaker 1: But maybe I need transition music in my mind. Have
- 7:24Speaker 1: we ever used transmission? Transmission music is when you shift
- 7:28Speaker 1: from second to third gear, transition music from silly to serious?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Can we do that, Michael?
- 7:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I think this one will work. Actually both ways here.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Okay, you know, you're right.
- 7:44Speaker 3: We used to have different silly to serious music than
- 7:47Speaker 3: our serious too silly music.
- 7:50Speaker 1: This is a song, This doesn't work, This is a song.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Same is going to be dancing too. You're in the
- 7:58Speaker 1: fifties when the twist was popular. Nobody can twist awesome.
- 8:02Speaker 1: When there were dances, the monkey, the swim, anything that
- 8:05Speaker 1: you just like, you knew what you're supposed.
- 8:06Speaker 2: To do with their hands, and it was crossy simple.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not doing a good job of transitioning to
- 8:12Speaker 1: something serious. This Air Force pilot retired over the weekend
- 8:17Speaker 1: who was involved in nine to eleven. And I had
- 8:19Speaker 1: never heard this story, or I had and I forgot
- 8:22Speaker 1: it because I can hide my own Easter eggs anyway.
- 8:24Speaker 1: This Air Force F sixteen pilot retired over the weekend
- 8:27Speaker 1: after forty years in the Air Force. He his job
- 8:31Speaker 1: was to take out Flight ninety three, the last plane
- 8:35Speaker 1: that was still in the air on nine to eleven.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And I had never heard this story in completion. I
- 8:41Speaker 1: knew that we had scrambled fighter jets and that that
- 8:43Speaker 1: was a possibility. I didn't know this. He's sixty one
- 8:46Speaker 1: years old now. He was in his late thirties at
- 8:48Speaker 1: the time, and him and this other female pilot, Heather Penny,
- 8:52Speaker 1: who was twenty six at the time, were ordered to
- 8:55Speaker 1: go up. This is after you know, two planes that
- 8:57Speaker 1: at the World Trade Center. One it hit the Pentagon
- 8:59Speaker 1: and there was another plane in the air and we
- 9:00Speaker 1: figured it out. And this had all occurred in like seconds,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and this was all happening really really fast, and they
- 9:06Speaker 1: were scrambled and told to go up and what was
- 9:09Speaker 1: the actual phrase, stop it? Their orders were to locate
- 9:15Speaker 1: flight ninety three and stop it. That's all they were told.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So him and this other woman went up, and he
- 9:20Speaker 1: was the guy in charge, and he went up because
- 9:23Speaker 1: he didn't want to ask anybody else to do this,
- 9:25Speaker 1: because he had an idea of how awful this would be.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 9:29Speaker 1: They decided him and this woman that if required, they
- 9:32Speaker 1: would hit the hijack plane with their jets, making it
- 9:35Speaker 1: a suicide mission. They were what, Yeah, he said that
- 9:39Speaker 1: we couldn't figure out how to it first because our
- 9:41Speaker 1: fighter jets were not armed with missiles. Oh, we didn't
- 9:44Speaker 1: have any weapons. We were just we just went up
- 9:46Speaker 1: and were told to stop that plane.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Oh my lord.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I so you hadn't heard this either, I know. So
- 9:54Speaker 1: he and this woman said they they planned to ram
- 9:57Speaker 1: the front of the jetliner and he was gonna hit
- 9:59Speaker 1: it from the front. She was going to hit it
- 10:00Speaker 1: from the back at the same time, flying at you know,
- 10:03Speaker 1: six hundred miles an hour, and that's what they were
- 10:07Speaker 1: going to do. But right before they were already in
- 10:12Speaker 1: the air and screaming toward the plane. Before it happened,
- 10:14Speaker 1: they got word that the plane had gone down. Because
- 10:16Speaker 1: we all know, the passengers took over the plane and
- 10:20Speaker 1: it crashed into the ground and they all died. This guy,
- 10:24Speaker 1: the woman was single and childless. But this dude's I
- 10:27Speaker 1: should give his name. I haven't given his name yet,
- 10:29Speaker 1: have I He's a freaking hero, Mark Sassville. He had
- 10:33Speaker 1: a wife and two young children, ages three and five
- 10:35Speaker 1: at the time. He said, it's a testament to those
- 10:38Speaker 1: people that brought down that plane that changed my life's
- 10:40Speaker 1: family forever.
- 10:42Speaker 4: He was going to die, wife and two young kids,
- 10:45Speaker 4: going Okay, this is what I have to do.
- 10:47Speaker 1: He said. He didn't even think about it at the time.
- 10:50Speaker 1: He said, training just kicked in. It all happened so fast.
- 10:53Speaker 1: They were given the order to take down the plane okay,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and he talked to the woman, this is what we'll do.
- 10:56Speaker 1: We'll fly into the plane and it's just all I'm
- 10:58Speaker 1: sure it was happening very very fast.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, more toxic masculinity from him and her.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Wow, that's that's incredible. How many people.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Did those passengers on flight ninety three save, It's a
- 11:13Speaker 3: number that'll never be known.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Well, were the flight was believed to be headed for?
- 11:18Speaker 2: What the White House?
- 11:18Speaker 1: That guy was going to say. They're not certain still
- 11:21Speaker 1: on that yet. There were some beliefs that it was
- 11:24Speaker 1: the White House, some that it was the capital. But
- 11:26Speaker 1: either way it was going to be like the Capitol. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: either way it was gonna be bad.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it would be interested to know if he called
- 11:34Speaker 4: his wife prior to getting in that jet.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Oh, like what you would say from reading just the
- 11:38Speaker 1: short description of there was no time for that. This
- 11:41Speaker 1: was a this is what's happened. There's still a flight
- 11:44Speaker 1: in the air, like a run to the plane, get
- 11:45Speaker 1: in the air and just go and go. Yeah wow.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Or if you read the nine to eleven report, it
- 11:52Speaker 3: was amazing how much confusion there was and trying to
- 11:56Speaker 3: get planes in the air to defend DC or whatever.
- 11:58Speaker 3: There's nobody even knew who to call to suddenly defend
- 12:02Speaker 3: the homeland, and so enormous amounts of time elapsed before
- 12:07Speaker 3: they got like a significant force up in the air.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, somehow, I just happened to see the video the
- 12:16Speaker 1: other day of George Bush reading the reading to those kids,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and the person came and whispered in his ear mister President,
- 12:23Speaker 1: were under attack. I understand why he did this. How
- 12:29Speaker 1: he did it because he was in shock himself. You know.
- 12:31Speaker 1: He says he didn't want to like freak out the kids.
- 12:34Speaker 1: He should have stood up right there and just walked out.
- 12:37Speaker 1: The kids will be fine. The whole America's the whole
- 12:39Speaker 1: country is about to be freaked out. So yeah, waiting
- 12:43Speaker 1: another however many minutes it was before he did anything.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I don't know that was the best choice, but I
- 12:47Speaker 1: can understand. Yeah, that's a lot to comprehend in a
- 12:50Speaker 1: very you know, all of a sudden, sitting in front
- 12:53Speaker 1: of the press. He was sitting there because I just
- 12:57Speaker 1: for some reason, Oh, I was at some more recent
- 13:00Speaker 1: interview where he talks about it. Because now he is
- 13:03Speaker 1: an old man. It's interesting to see the videos of
- 13:06Speaker 1: him now he is an old man, and he was
- 13:08Speaker 1: such a young man at the time. But he is
- 13:10Speaker 1: talking about how he was looking at the back of
- 13:12Speaker 1: the room and seeing all the press. They were all
- 13:14Speaker 1: getting the alerts, so he knew they knew. And that's
- 13:19Speaker 1: a lot to have ridle through your brain at one time.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I actually know a couple of people who know W.
- 13:25Speaker 3: One a little bit, one very very well. He was
- 13:30Speaker 3: in the press office for HW, and then knew W
- 13:35Speaker 3: and his family too, And everybody who knows George W
- 13:39Speaker 3: really really likes him. And this guy who worked for
- 13:43Speaker 3: HW for a number of years, he echoes the impression
- 13:47Speaker 3: I'd always gotten. He said, he's one of the most
- 13:49Speaker 3: honorable and decent people he's ever known.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Yeah, well, lots of people say that, which is interesting.
- 13:57Speaker 1: What happened in terms of that are choosing We choose
- 14:03Speaker 1: our candidates, not the way we choose our candidates, and
- 14:08Speaker 1: we don't have any requirements for decency or experience or
- 14:16Speaker 1: really anything mental capacity coherence. Hey, what are you gonna do?
- 14:23Speaker 2: What are you gonna do?
- 14:27Speaker 3: Well?
- 14:27Speaker 5: Going back to the teenage dance, I was a chaperone
- 14:31Speaker 5: at my first teenage dance, so I wasn't real popular
- 14:34Speaker 5: with the kids, my own age chap, a chaperone. I'm kidding,
- 14:42Speaker 5: but you know, I just think it's a funny idea. Well,
- 14:46Speaker 5: I guess that's it.
