In which the small business of Grubb & Smallways, plagued by accidents and misfortune, struggles to maintain a bicycle hire shop amidst the bustling and chaotic thoroughfare of Bun Hill, while its proprietors endeavour to find joy and respite in a spirited Whitsuntide picnic. The day’s innocent pleasures come abruptly undone when Bert’s motor-bicycle catches fire, provoking a spirited yet hapless effort of firefighting that draws an eclectic crowd and reveals the tenuous grasp the protagonists have on their lives and fortunes.
