- 0:00Speaker 1: Now that's a graduation speech. It's one more thing I'm.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Strong and Getty thing, or more importantly, commencement address, which
- 0:10Speaker 2: we've been talking about on the Armstrong and Getty Show
- 0:13Speaker 2: a lot and do every year this time of year.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We got this text before we get to one that
- 0:17Speaker 1: has gone viral from last week. We got this text
- 0:21Speaker 1: from somebody. I was at the Berkeley graduation on Saturday,
- 0:25Speaker 1: my daughter's graduation. She went through the Davis School district.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Man went through the Davis School district and graduated from Berkeley. Anyway,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Robert Reich was the keynote speaker.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 0:36Speaker 1: He's a Berkeley professor. Remember he's the one last week.
- 0:38Speaker 1: He's a former economic advisor to Clinton and Obama. Everybody,
- 0:43Speaker 1: he's the guy the last week basically said the only
- 0:46Speaker 1: way you can become a billionaire is to be a
- 0:49Speaker 1: thief or a cheat. No other way you can become
- 0:52Speaker 1: a billionaire, hardcore socialist. The fact that a guy can
- 0:58Speaker 1: teach economics and advice and say there's no way to
- 1:01Speaker 1: become a billionaire on the up and up is amazing.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Remember when I complained about that Simpsons episode where they
- 1:06Speaker 1: had him the actual Robert Reich as a cartoon character
- 1:09Speaker 1: do a song about up with socialism.
- 1:12Speaker 3: On the simple right. Yeah, disgusting.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. Anyway, Robert oak Reich was a keynote.
- 1:18Speaker 1: He wasn't as insufferable as I thought he would be,
- 1:20Speaker 1: although he'd go on and on about authoritarianism and how
- 1:25Speaker 1: they need to pack the Supreme Court and add New
- 1:27Speaker 1: States and abolish the electoral college to avoid authoritarianism. Yes, indeed,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I won't get off on that topic. That's what Kamala
- 1:37Speaker 1: Harris put out a video last week talking about packing
- 1:39Speaker 1: the Supreme Court in the New States, and maybe we'll
- 1:41Speaker 1: talk about that on the Armstrong and Getty radio show. Anyway,
- 1:44Speaker 1: the heartening thing was that one of the other speakers
- 1:46Speaker 1: was a guy named Manu Meal, a former Berkeley student
- 1:49Speaker 1: who founded Bridge USA. It was in response to the
- 1:52Speaker 1: twenty seventeen riots. When controversial that would be anybody that's conservative,
- 1:57Speaker 1: speakers were uninvited to speak on campus, and they had
- 2:00Speaker 1: him up there. He was engaging, funny and thoughtful on
- 2:03Speaker 1: that topic. So to your point on the radio show,
- 2:07Speaker 1: maybe the pendulum starting to swing back the other direction. Maybe?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, As I often say, it's the end of
- 2:13Speaker 3: the beginning. People are aware and there's progress being made.
- 2:16Speaker 3: But man, it's going to be a long fight.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Havn't somebody represent the idea that they shouldn't have uninvited
- 2:22Speaker 1: those speakers at Berkeley a decade ago, or having Jonathan
- 2:26Speaker 1: Heide speak at NYU. That's a step in the right direction,
- 2:29Speaker 1: I would agree. Another liberal institution, but aren't they all
- 2:33Speaker 1: University of North Carolina tar Heels at Chapel Hill, they
- 2:36Speaker 1: had a country music star, Eric Church there to do
- 2:43Speaker 1: an address that he kind of combined music and his message.
- 2:48Speaker 1: And I haven't actually heard this. I've just had people
- 2:50Speaker 1: bring it up to me in real life. It went viral,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it got a lot of attention. So we're going to
- 2:54Speaker 1: play the whole thing for you here.
- 2:56Speaker 4: You were made uniquely, wonderfully, distinctly. There's a sound only
- 3:01Speaker 4: you can make, a voice that has never existed before
- 3:04Speaker 4: you and will never exist again, a contribution only you
- 3:08Speaker 4: can bring a way of seeing that belongs to only you.
- 3:12Speaker 4: The world does not need another cover song. It needs
- 3:16Speaker 4: an original. Six strings, six strings of life, and willingness
- 3:29Speaker 4: to keep them in tune, six principles, six pillars. When
- 3:33Speaker 4: all six are in tune with each other. The cord
- 3:35Speaker 4: your life makes is full and resonant and truth. All
- 3:40Speaker 4: six will drift, not one or two, all six and
- 3:44Speaker 4: their own time and their own season. Your faith will
- 3:48Speaker 4: go quiet when you need it loud. Your family will
- 3:51Speaker 4: get complicated in a way only the people who love
- 3:53Speaker 4: you most can complicate things. You will go through hard
- 3:57Speaker 4: seasons with your spouse. Viistion will hollow out, and your
- 4:01Speaker 4: resilience will wear thin. Your community will start to feel
- 4:05Speaker 4: like an obligation, and your world will try to sand
- 4:08Speaker 4: down the edges of exactly who you are. This is
- 4:11Speaker 4: not failure, This is not weakness. It's the inevitable universal
- 4:17Speaker 4: experience of living in an imperfect world that doesn't stop
- 4:20Speaker 4: to let us tune up, and the difference between a
- 4:23Speaker 4: life that sounds like music and a life that sounds
- 4:26Speaker 4: like noise. It's whether you stop and listen, whether you're
- 4:31Speaker 4: honest enough to hear which string has drifted out of tune,
- 4:34Speaker 4: and humble enough to make the adjustment instead of just
- 4:37Speaker 4: turning up the volume and hoping nobody notices. Wow, Because
- 4:41Speaker 4: you will notice, the part of you that knows what
- 4:44Speaker 4: the chord should sound like will always notice it will
- 4:49Speaker 4: not let you go. Life won't be right until it
- 4:52Speaker 4: is tuned. Trust what your heart hears and is telling
- 4:56Speaker 4: you about your song. So, graduates, now I encourage you
- 5:01Speaker 4: to take your six strings, make it something worth hearing,
- 5:05Speaker 4: and play your song. As I leave you with mine,
- 5:14Speaker 4: I carry you in.
- 5:17Speaker 1: The Okay, we probably don't need this song. That was fantastic.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Oh where is the hall of fame of metaphors? That
- 5:26Speaker 3: needs to be in the front hall, the front entry.
- 5:29Speaker 1: How freaking good was that?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Oh lord, that was a poetry.
- 5:34Speaker 1: We got to play that on the radio show.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, let's do it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: That is so damn good. Oh my god, all of it,
- 5:40Speaker 1: like you say, as a metaphors so good, you know
- 5:43Speaker 1: when they're out of tune and you either just blow
- 5:46Speaker 1: by it and hope nobody notices.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and I've never been a fan of the
- 5:52Speaker 3: Pollyanna Lemonade will Rain from the Sky's bullshit speech either.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I just I like him saying, look, it is going
- 6:01Speaker 3: to be hairy at times. All the good stuff gets
- 6:05Speaker 3: tough at times. That's not failure. I've told the story
- 6:10Speaker 3: before of you know, the one real radio mentor I
- 6:13Speaker 3: had very young told me it's going to be hard,
- 6:20Speaker 3: it's going to take a long time, and you're not
- 6:21Speaker 3: gonna make any money. So when that was the situation,
- 6:25Speaker 3: I thought, here we go, we're on track.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Well, oh that was so good. Your family is going
- 6:29Speaker 1: to be out of tune at sometimes, your marriage, your ambition,
- 6:34Speaker 1: your morals, just all those things very fun. Then you
- 6:37Speaker 1: got to tune them back up because you know they're
- 6:39Speaker 1: out of tune. Yep, that's that is really good. Good
- 6:44Speaker 1: for him. It'd be better to give stand up there
- 6:48Speaker 1: and give a speech about how Trump is. Like getting
- 6:52Speaker 1: back to Scott Pelley, which I was talking about on
- 6:53Speaker 1: the radio show. He gave his commencement addressed not long
- 6:55Speaker 1: ago about basically Trump being a dictator and ruining the world,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and you're job to get out there and oppose him.
- 7:01Speaker 1: That's your role.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Robert Reich saying we got to pack the Supreme Court,
- 7:06Speaker 3: an idea so horrifying even FDR was just shot down
- 7:10Speaker 3: for it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Well, and just all that stuff. It's about, you know,
- 7:13Speaker 1: some other entity that you need to fight against as
- 7:16Speaker 1: opposed to your own life. The only the things you
- 7:18Speaker 1: can control in keeping them all in tune together. Wow,
- 7:22Speaker 1: that was so freaking good.
- 7:24Speaker 3: No, that's an excellent point. You despare it there.
- 7:26Speaker 1: No wonder people brought that up to me in real
- 7:28Speaker 1: life people. It's a couple of different people said me,
- 7:31Speaker 1: did you hear Eric Church's graduation thing? No, oh, you
- 7:35Speaker 1: got to hear it. People said, I thought, yeah, I've
- 7:37Speaker 1: heard this sort of thing before. That was really good.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah, let's post that that audio end or video at
- 7:43Speaker 3: Armstrong and Giddy dot com so people can find it
- 7:45Speaker 3: super easily and zapper around with the friends.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Love that. Well, I guess that's it.
