Transcript
- 0:01Alright, welcome back, ladies and gentlemen to another episode
- 0:04of the Take to Pod with Mom and Dad.
- 0:07I'm Dad. And I'm mom.
- 0:09The kids just went down not long ago.
- 0:11It was a pretty good day, no major concerns.
- 0:15Little man was pretty tuckered out so he didn't put up a fight
- 0:18that time. What about you?
- 0:21I mean the the the potty training woes continue with with
- 0:24our toddler. There's a lot of not going in
- 0:28the toilet and literally going anywhere else.
- 0:31But the baby was good. We had a good day, easy night
- 0:34and now we're just excited to be having some mom and dad time.
- 0:39Yeah, and for episode 5, it is Valentine's Day.
- 0:42So happy Valentine's Day to you and your loved ones.
- 0:45Yes, happy birthday. We have decided to do a special
- 0:50movie for us and let's do the drum roll.
- 0:58As far back as I could remember, I always wanted to be a Dada.
- 1:02That's right everybody. We're doing good fellas today.
- 1:06Released in 1990, directed by the amazing Martin Scorsese and
- 1:12starring Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
- 1:16What a cast. This movie is it's it's, you
- 1:21know, we were like, do we wait? Do we not?
- 1:23But you know what? I've been getting a lot of
- 1:26people asking me, when are you doing, you know, this movie?
- 1:28When are you doing this one? And then Goodfellas has come up
- 1:31a few times. So I'm like, you know what?
- 1:33Let's just give the people what they want to hear.
- 1:35Yeah, and this is if, if, if it's not Dad's favorite movie,
- 1:39It's one of his most favorite movies.
- 1:41It's it's close to the top if it's not your very favorite.
- 1:43No, this is my. Favorite.
- 1:45This is his favorite. Movie, this one, sorry, this one
- 1:47and Zodiac they're kind of floating back and forth, but
- 1:51this one is my favorite currently.
- 1:55It is just a phenomenal movie, but let's get into the details
- 2:00here. So the synopsis.
- 2:03A gritty crime drama detailing the true story of Henry Hill's
- 2:06rise and fall within the Lukasi crime family in New York City.
- 2:11As Mom mentioned, directed by Martin Scorsese.
- 2:15Box office for this movie came out in 1990.
- 2:19It made 47,000,000 on a budget of 25,000,000.
- 2:23So not the best box office results.
- 2:27Longevity of this movie. You know it's banging on what,
- 2:3230 years now? It definitely is one of those
- 2:34movies that developed a cult following it.
- 2:37It wasn't necessarily received as well when it first came out,
- 2:40but it definitely has developed a following.
- 2:43Yeah, this movie came out in 1990 and it's banging on 35 plus
- 2:47years now, so just just to legendary movie.
- 2:50And still very poignant, very relatable.
- 2:53Joe Pesci, Deniro Ryota, Lorraine Bracco.
- 2:57Just an amazing cast. So we hope to do this pod
- 3:01justice because we both love this movie.
- 3:04So from the beginning, when was the first time that you watched
- 3:08this movie? The first time I saw this movie,
- 3:12you showed it to me. Yeah, It was one of our earlier
- 3:15dates. And I noticed very quickly that
- 3:18you were saying, look at this scene.
- 3:20Did you notice this? Watch this.
- 3:22So it became obvious that this movie was kind of a test, that
- 3:27I, I was kind of required to like it if we were gonna have a
- 3:31relationship. So I, I paid attention,
- 3:36obviously, and I ended up really liking the movie.
- 3:39And since then, because it's one of your favorite movies, I have
- 3:42seen it countless times. We quoted at each other all the
- 3:45time and it has it. It's earned a very special place
- 3:50in my heart just because you love it so much.
- 3:53Yes, this movie was a test, but it's because this movie is so
- 3:58good. So my theory was, if I show this
- 4:02movie to someone who hasn't seen it and they don't like it, they
- 4:07can fuck off. Like seriously, I don't know
- 4:10anybody who doesn't like this movie.
- 4:13It's really good. It's.
- 4:14Really, and I'm sorry, but if you haven't seen it at this
- 4:18point, I mean you should probably go see it and if your
- 4:22partner hasn't seen it, you should sit down and make them
- 4:25watch it like this movie. Is medication OK?
- 4:32So it was a good call to make you watch it.
- 4:34It was a good call to make me watch it gave me a little bit of
- 4:37insight into you. Not that you're like anybody in
- 4:39the movie, Henry. No, but it it this is. 21 year
- 4:43old kid with such connections. Yeah, your hands.
- 4:46Your hands didn't feel like you worked in construction at all.
- 4:49But no, it gave me a little bit of an insight into your taste
- 4:53because a lot of your favorite movies are gangster movies or
- 4:57crime movies. So it gave me a little bit of an
- 4:59insight into what you like, movie guys.
- 5:03And I, I know, love it too, and love several Scorsese movies
- 5:07that I probably wouldn't if if I wasn't with you.
- 5:10This is Scorsese best. What do you?
- 5:11Think this is his. Masterpiece.
- 5:12This is his masterpiece. I agree.
- 5:15So first time I watched this movie, I was about 7 or 8 years
- 5:19old and my brothers had got a copy of this on VHS and they
- 5:26brought it home and the movie started playing.
- 5:30And then you have the opening sequence where they're driving
- 5:32in the car and then they open the trunk and you see somebody
- 5:36getting stabbed. You know, you see Billy Bats
- 5:39getting stabbed a bunch of times and then he gets shot.
- 5:43And then Henry closes the trunk and it's freeze frame.
- 5:46And then there's this, you know, prologue to the movie.
- 5:51And that's as far as I usually got at that age.
- 5:55As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.
- 5:59Because the prologue was so interesting and when he was
- 6:05older, I kind of fell out of interest, but I was really
- 6:09little. But later on, as I grew up, we
- 6:12had a DVD copy in the house. I'm probably 1011 and I watched
- 6:20this movie from start to finish and I'm like, whoa, this is what
- 6:24my brothers were obsessed with. This is why.
- 6:27I'm surprised the opening scene didn't scare you off because the
- 6:30opening scene is crazy. It's crazy, but.
- 6:33Violent stabbing, yeah, but as. A, You know, as a young boy,
- 6:37you're kind of like, you're kind of afraid of it, but also you
- 6:41don't get, you don't see anything like that on TV, right?
- 6:44So it's a very graphic and you're just like, it's crazy.
- 6:47It's just wild. Yeah, it goes, it goes.
- 6:48Hard, you know, young boys are they think the most scary,
- 6:52dangerous things are cool. It's true.
- 6:54When you get older, you like, wow, what was I thinking?
- 6:56We have that to look forward to with our son, I'm sure.
- 6:59Yeah. So why did you like this movie
- 7:03or why did you hate it? Like I said, I liked it right
- 7:06away. It's it's a very interesting
- 7:09story. You go through Henry Hill's life
- 7:12and you experience all of these amazing different experiences
- 7:15with him, so you instantly have this connection.
- 7:20Um, so I really liked that about the movie.
- 7:22I like the journey that it takes you on.
- 7:24I like how complex the story is. It goes in all kinds of
- 7:28different, different directions. Yeah.
- 7:31And honestly, I like it because of how much you like it.
- 7:34I like, if it weren't for you, I probably, this probably wouldn't
- 7:38be one of my favorite movies. And it is because of you.
- 7:41So you like it because of me or you got gave it a chance because
- 7:46of me and you really like it? I think.
- 7:48Because you asked to watch it on some random nights.
- 7:50You just like you watch Goodfellas.
- 7:51Yeah, well, I I think it's both. When when you see someone you
- 7:55love loving something, it makes it more special.
- 7:58Wow, right on the theme of Valentine's Day.
- 8:00Very, very poignant. Very cute.
- 8:02Just imagine my my heart beating.
- 8:05OK, OK, but thank you for that. I do love this movie for selfish
- 8:10reasons and in that regard anyway, it's just from A-Z or Z.
- 8:17It is just nonstop. This movie moves so quickly.
- 8:21It's so well done and well acted.
- 8:24Scorsese at his best here and it has some of the best quotes.
- 8:29And this movie actually makes you question your day-to-day
- 8:33life. It was hard for us to make notes
- 8:36during it too because it goes so fast and you don't want to miss
- 8:39a minute of it. They're looking down at your
- 8:40phone. Feels criminal even though we've
- 8:42seen it a million times. Yeah, when this movie is
- 8:45playing, you don't wanna walk away.
- 8:46You don't wanna go do something around the house because every
- 8:49scene is so friggin good. And for me, it made me question
- 8:52my life. Like that scene where Henry's
- 8:54talking about people with bum paychecks who take the bus and
- 8:58subway to work every day were dead.
- 9:00They were suckers. They had no balls.
- 9:02And I'm just sitting there. At one point in my life, I was
- 9:04watching this and I'm just like, you know, you have that early
- 9:07shitty job and your life, and you're like, ah, you know, he's
- 9:11right. Why am I doing this?
- 9:13Yeah, but he gets, he gets his comeuppance for the for the
- 9:15lifestyle. That's the thing.
- 9:17This movie is a drug trip from the beginning to about, I would
- 9:21say 80% in and the last 2025% of this movie, it's like, OK, the
- 9:28drug trip is over, now you're going to see the real reality.
- 9:32Well, it's it's a lesson. Yeah, it is.
- 9:34It's a lesson he learned throughout the movie that living
- 9:37that lifestyle has a big downside.
- 9:41It can ruin your life. The drugs can ruin your life.
- 9:44The crime can ruin your life. Yeah, he ends up in jail at one
- 9:47point. He he does learn throughout this
- 9:49movie that yeah, this lifestyle is easier and more fun, but at
- 9:53what cost? Yeah, it's yeah.
- 9:55And the the opening prologue is so good.
- 9:59Like the guy looks so much like Ray Liotta too.
- 10:01They. Picked.
- 10:02I love, I love the whole the whole segment where he is, where
- 10:06he's a kid. Yeah, that's why like when I was
- 10:08a kid, I watched that and I was like, this is great.
- 10:10And then when they show them older, you kind of like, you
- 10:13know, I was 8 years old though, so.
- 10:16No, it's still amazing. But the the beginning scene, it
- 10:18does have that innocence and that air of excitement and
- 10:21learning about this world through Henry's eyes and through
- 10:24a child's eyes. So it is like more sparkly and
- 10:27more exciting. We have that.
- 10:28It is. We have this movie on VHS, DVD
- 10:31and I have it on Blu-ray now. It is a staple in my household.
- 10:36I think it's been around for the last 30 years.
- 10:38Whatever house I've lived in, there's been a copy of it in the
- 10:40house in one format or another. Well, we we actually watched it
- 10:43on Blu-ray and can I just say I I missed the the FBI anti piracy
- 10:48warnings at the beginning of movies.
- 10:50Yeah, it's it's sets such a specific bias.
- 10:53It's weird. It's like museum piece.
- 10:56Yeah, we don't have it anymore. But anyways, we really should
- 10:59get into the segments because we have a lot to say about this
- 11:02movie. Yeah, this movie is gonna take a
- 11:04while because we love this movie and we wanna do it justice.
- 11:07So yeah, cringiest moments. Do you want to go ahead or you
- 11:10want me to go this? Time.
- 11:11I'll go ahead. Listen, this is not a cringey
- 11:14movie. It's incredibly well acted and
- 11:16it was hard for me to find a moment that I felt was cringy
- 11:20because every moment is so good. And the only thing that I could
- 11:25say is Karen as a character is is rather cringy.
- 11:31When she goes to Janice Rossi's apartment and she's screaming,
- 11:34you have a whole living in this apartment building.
- 11:37You have a whore living here to be Rossy is a whore and like she
- 11:42has her kids with her is. This the Superintendent.
- 11:46I just want to let you know Sir, that you have a whore living in
- 11:482R. Yeah, it's just like, and she
- 11:52has her kids with her. One of them has like a passy in
- 11:54their mouth, like they're very young.
- 11:56It's really sad. It's kind of sad, but it's also
- 11:58cringy that she's screaming. That, and honestly, Karen is
- 12:01responsible for most of the cringy moments in the movie.
- 12:04She lays on the floor sobbing after threatening to shoot Henry
- 12:08in the face. The way she cries, though, it's.
- 12:11It's not for Bracco. It's no, I love her OK, and it's
- 12:15not bad acting, but like as a person.
- 12:18She's. She's cringey.
- 12:20Does it make you uncomfortable? It makes me cringe and um.
- 12:26Because it's uncomfortable. Because it's acting so good.
- 12:29Yeah, because I think she is a little bit of a cringey person.
- 12:32Like when she goes to the cab stand and starts yelling at him
- 12:34in front, in front of everybody. That's all so cringy.
- 12:37Everyone knew what went on at the cab stand.
- 12:39Yeah, well, it's embarrassing because she goes there, she
- 12:42starts yelling at him. He's like turned on by it for
- 12:44some reason. But that that scene is cringey.
- 12:47Great eyes Like Liz Taylor. Like Liz Taylor, I thought.
- 12:49Yeah, but it's it's also cringed.
- 12:52This podcast is gonna be recording the whole movie.
- 12:54Yeah, yeah. It's also cringy when she admits
- 12:57to flushing the coke down the toilet.
- 13:00They would have found it. I swear to you, I swear to you.
- 13:04And then they cry in the corner. Like it's very dramatic.
- 13:07But she is a character as a little bit cringy, but the
- 13:10acting is impeccable. I don't want anybody to think
- 13:12I'm coming for Bracco's acting career.
- 13:15The writing is the writing for the characters kanji.
- 13:18Karen is just cringy. She's a cringy character.
- 13:20Karen. She's a Karen, Yeah.
- 13:23Alright, my cringy moment. I actually found one.
- 13:26The sequence where Henry's grammar is introduced, like
- 13:30there's like I put her in an apartment around the block from
- 13:34the suite. The wallpaper, all the like,
- 13:37pink and purple furniture that needs to go to hell.
- 13:40Like that wallpaper was so cringy.
- 13:43Like it has not aged well. It wasn't.
- 13:45Cool. Then he lets her design the
- 13:47apartment. He doesn't.
- 13:48Live it wasn't cool then it's not cool now it's the worst
- 13:52design ever the bed frame the the walls everything like come
- 13:57on like don't do anything just just get some new furniture.
- 14:00Why'd you? You know the apartment looks
- 14:03like well, if you watch it anytime you watch it, it never
- 14:05looked good. Yeah, but I think it's supposed
- 14:07to be ultra feminine, like it's supposed to be the inside of a
- 14:10My Little Pony. Cause it's, it's the, it's the
- 14:12mistresses apartment. She lives there.
- 14:14He doesn't give Maria super homely.
- 14:15Like it's just very. She's ugly, Yeah, sorry, no
- 14:18offence to the actress. I said homely.
- 14:20Yeah. Well, I think that the the
- 14:23second mistress is a lot better looking than the first one,
- 14:25Sandy. Let's get to the really fun
- 14:27parts, OK? What's your most iconic moment?
- 14:31So there's a lot. I only picked 1 moment and
- 14:34basically the rest are scenes. OK so the scene where they name
- 14:40all the gangsters is amazing. Pete the Killa, Nikki eyes Jimmy
- 14:452 times. Who got that name because he
- 14:46said everything twice. I'm going to go get the papers.
- 14:49Get the papers. That whole scene when he's
- 14:51introducing everybody, not only historically is it amazing
- 14:55because apparently, like, I don't know this, but apparently
- 14:57a lot like everybody he's naming is real.
- 15:00And they go into them in different movies and different
- 15:02shows and stuff, but they're just they just kind of get that
- 15:04little cameo moment in this movie.
- 15:06Yeah, that scene is amazing, though.
- 15:08It's it sets the IT sets the standard for the movie.
- 15:11I got the whole list here, I'm gonna read it off alright.
- 15:14There was Frankie Carbone, Anthony Stabile, Fat Andy who
- 15:19was Moe Black's brother, Frankie the wop, Freddie knows Pete the
- 15:25killer, Mickey eyes and Mikey Francesi and Jimmy 2 times who
- 15:30got that name because he said everything twice like let me go
- 15:33get the papers get the papers. Also, side note, Mikey
- 15:37franchise, he's a real guy and he's a YouTuber now.
- 15:44No, Yeah, he left the life and he was shocked to hear his name
- 15:47in the film the first time. The first time he watched the
- 15:49movie, he was in prison and he was shocked to hear his name in
- 15:52it because he has nothing to do with Henry's crew.
- 15:55He's part of the Colombo crime family or he was and this is
- 15:59about the Lucchese crime family in New York.
- 16:01So he was, you know, I think it was more of a, you know, when
- 16:07the real Henry Hill was telling the story, um, he was kind of
- 16:10like saying, you know, these are the kind of guys that were
- 16:12hanging around. So there was a big name drop
- 16:15because he was a big name. Anyway, just kind of a little
- 16:19tidbit there. But I love the the the comments
- 16:21the guys make. Like, you know, let me take care
- 16:25of that thing for you, you know? Yeah, like they're all talking
- 16:27to the camera. He's like, what's up, guy?
- 16:29It sets, it sets the vibe, yeah. And it shows us that, you know,
- 16:33this guys a gangster. He knows all these people.
- 16:35And if you're a history buff who's like into the gangster
- 16:38mobster history, you'll know a lot of the names exactly.
- 16:42So it is. It's very interesting.
- 16:43What else you got for a moment or scene?
- 16:46So that was the only one I had for moments.
- 16:48The rest are ohhh sorry the other another iconic scene is
- 16:52when he walks her through. The Copacabana.
- 16:55The Copacabana. Steady shot.
- 16:57And when he kissed me plays. We actually had that play at our
- 17:02wedding. When?
- 17:03We walked back down there. Yeah, that's our after ceremony
- 17:06song. And we got a big compliment from
- 17:08the from. A lot of people, yeah.
- 17:12The guy with the carriage. Actually, half the guests knew
- 17:14that was from Goodfellas, so they were like super.
- 17:16Pumped. Yeah, it was really good.
- 17:18It's it's such a good song. Too.
- 17:19It's a great song. Yeah, the whole scene, like that
- 17:21whole clip, it's a nonstop no cuts.
- 17:24Yeah, it's A1 take. It's a winner and it's
- 17:26beautiful. Yeah, it's it's, it's really
- 17:28good. It just it shows like his
- 17:30connections, it shows how confident.
- 17:31And it's symbolic that's him bringing her into that life.
- 17:34And they actually go down cause they're going into like
- 17:37basically it's supposed to be a a.
- 17:40Connector. Oh, good connection.
- 17:41To hell like he's going. Down.
- 17:43To his world. Hmm, so I got Henry beating the
- 17:49neighbor's face in with the butt of the gun after Karen calls him
- 17:52crying. That scene is always like you
- 17:56always watch it. You can't look away because the
- 18:00look on Ray Liotta's face, Oh my God, it sucks that gun into.
- 18:04His intensity, yeah. He just walks up to the guy and
- 18:07you want fuck you want something and he just Bang Bang bang
- 18:13cracks his face open with the butt of the gun.
- 18:15Yeah, and this guy's not a criminal.
- 18:17His friends aren't badasses, so they all immediately turn stark
- 18:20white and get scared. Yeah, it's and they're working
- 18:23on their Corvette. Yeah.
- 18:27I would say, yeah, The entire opening with young Henry, I
- 18:31think it's one of the best prologues to any movie ever
- 18:33made. Like you, like most movies, have
- 18:36a little flashback with narration, but this movie's
- 18:40narration, just the storytelling is impeccable.
- 18:43Obviously, Nicholas Pileggi, who did the screenplay and wrote the
- 18:46book, wise guy that this movie is based on.
- 18:49And then you have Scorsese working his magic with him.
- 18:51I have, I have thoughts about that whole prologue that I'm
- 18:54going to go into later, but it's it is really good.
- 18:57Tommy and Spider argue about the missing drink, another epic
- 19:00moment. People have always remember that
- 19:03they did an homage to it in Sopranos with the guy who plays
- 19:06Christopher Christopher, which any Goodfellas fan watching
- 19:11Sopranos would lose their mind, which I did.
- 19:13I was like, look at doing it. Oh my God.
- 19:14I actually hate the two scenes with Spider.
- 19:17It's really hard to. Watch.
- 19:18It's hard to watch, but I mean, yeah, I mean, you gotta, like,
- 19:22turn off your brain a little bit in this movie because you're
- 19:26basically getting sucked into their life.
- 19:28Like you're getting seduced by them.
- 19:30You're supposed to like root for them and be OK with all the crap
- 19:33they're doing. Right.
- 19:33Well, I, I talked about that later too, but yeah.
- 19:37But most iconic moment to me, Billy Batts, Tommy Argument.
- 19:42Yeah, yeah, I think it led to one of the most iconic lines
- 19:47ever. Go home and get your fucking
- 19:48shine box. You say that all the time.
- 19:51I have a T-shirt that says go home and get shine box.
- 19:53It's one of the best lines ever. It is.
- 19:55It's really insulting too. Solo Tommy.
- 19:59One more, shines Billy. I said no more shines.
- 20:02Maybe you didn't hear about it. You've been away a long time.
- 20:04They didn't go up there and tell you I don't shine shoes anymore.
- 20:08Relax, will you? For crowds?
- 20:09What's what's got into you? I'm breaking your balls a little
- 20:11bit, that's all. I'm only kidding with you.
- 20:13Sometimes you don't sound like you're kidding.
- 20:15You know, there's a lot of people.
- 20:16Right. I mean, I'm only kidding with
- 20:17you. We're having a party.
- 20:18I mean, I just came home. I haven't seen you in a long
- 20:20time and I'm breaking your balls.
- 20:22And you better when you're getting fucking fish.
- 20:23I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you.
- 20:25I'm sorry, it's OK, no problem. I'll go home and get your
- 20:33fucking shine box. Come on, you fucking piece of
- 20:38shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:40We used to call him Spitshine. Tommy.
- 20:42It's. Not that insulting.
- 20:44He's being sensitive. I mean depending like you just
- 20:48came, maybe he doesn't know him like that and maybe.
- 20:50He's really sensitive. He shoots Spider in the foot for
- 20:54saying go fuck yourself Tommy after no, sorry, sorry.
- 20:57He kills him. He kills him after he says that.
- 21:00Why would you poke the bear just cause you Billy bats?
- 21:03No, you're right. And, and I say something about
- 21:05that later too, but like he was being, that's not that bad of a
- 21:07compliment or or sorry, an insult.
- 21:09Do you wanna get into the quotes?
- 21:11Yeah. OK.
- 21:13So alright, sorry you're. Going doesn't matter, at least
- 21:16first. One day, some of the kids from
- 21:19the neighborhood carried my mom's groceries all the way home
- 21:22from the store. You know why?
- 21:24It was out of respect. It was out of respect.
- 21:26We say that to each other all. The time.
- 21:28I'll just be like, you know, I saw this person trying to park
- 21:31their car and they were about to back into somebody because they
- 21:34weren't paying attention. So I honked at them a bunch of
- 21:37times. You know why?
- 21:39Without respect, you can just say it in any situation.
- 21:43We just called it to each other all the time, even if it doesn't
- 21:45make sense. My God, you look like a
- 21:48gangster. When he shows up at the door,
- 21:50he's like, hey, mom, what do you think?
- 21:52He's dressed like a, you know, Al Capone?
- 21:54Yeah, go ahead. Business is bad.
- 21:58Fuck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire?
- 22:00Fuck you, pay me. Please get hit by lightning,
- 22:03huh? Fuck you pay me.
- 22:05He's talking about the restaurant that they, they just
- 22:07destroyed it. They took it over and destroyed.
- 22:08It of course you have go home and get your fucking shine box
- 22:12and then funny how funny how? Oht that whole scene you can cut
- 22:18the tension. With a knife, like I'm a clown.
- 22:20Like I'm here to amuse you. No, no, you know, you just, it's
- 22:24funny the way you tell the story.
- 22:26Like maybe I'm a little fucked up.
- 22:28I don't get it. Or Tommy, you got it all wrong.
- 22:31Oh, Anthony, he's a big boy. He knows what he said.
- 22:34Would you say? Wow, you have that memorized.
- 22:38I'm telling you, this movie fucking slaps.
- 22:40It does never rat on your friends and always keep your
- 22:44mouth shut. When Tommy.
- 22:46When Henry gets pinched for the first time and Dinero.
- 22:49Was proud of him. Yeah, he's like you took your
- 22:52first pitch like a man. What else?
- 22:55You. Got I've got Karen on the first
- 22:57date. I couldn't stand him.
- 23:00I thought he was really obnoxious.
- 23:02He kept fidgeting around. Yeah, the narration.
- 23:06That's when we first learned. About Karen.
- 23:09Thank you. Um, don't buy anything What I
- 23:14say don't buy anything. That's what I tell my wife
- 23:18around the holidays when she comes home with stop anything
- 23:21from the mall. Be like, what did I tell you?
- 23:23What did I tell you? Don't buy.
- 23:24Anything that is a meme. Don't buy anything.
- 23:28That is. True, that's true.
- 23:29Why would you buy anything two months before the holidays,
- 23:32right? Just yeah, I I don't do that.
- 23:35No, I know. Some people don't call me out
- 23:37when I haven't done anything. You've been close.
- 23:41Um, he's treating me like I'm a half foot FG.
- 23:47You sense yourself there. It's a sunny Sunny when he goes
- 23:53to Pauly and he's complaining about Tommy because he hits some
- 23:55of the bottle. Yeah.
- 23:58And then you got Paulie at that same situation.
- 24:00He's like, he's got a cigar in his mouth.
- 24:02I don't know anything about the restaurant business.
- 24:03Ohio, sit down or a meal. I don't know anything about it.
- 24:06You know anything about this restaurant business?
- 24:08And then the end of the movie, he's in the back of a restaurant
- 24:11cooking. So he he learned something.
- 24:12About the I mean, he knows how to cook.
- 24:14Most Italian men do. Yeah, that's stereotype.
- 24:19Um, and then when they're setting up the bamboo lounge to
- 24:24burn it down, Joe Pesci looks at Henry and says, you look like
- 24:28you're decorating a Christmas tree, you fucking prick.
- 24:31I love that part. It's just, there's no dialogue.
- 24:34It's just them lighting, putting up wax and like making the plays
- 24:39flammable. And then it just cuts to Joe
- 24:41Pesci and says that line. Yeah, he's he's he's got a lot
- 24:44of a lot of personality in the movie.
- 24:47Go ahead, there are women like my best friends that would have
- 24:51gotten out of there the moment their boyfriend gave them a gun
- 24:54to hide, but I didn't. I gotta admit the truth.
- 24:58It turned me on. Mazel tov, that's pretty good.
- 25:04My daughter says that you're half Jewish.
- 25:07Just a good half, one dog's going this way and the other
- 25:13dogs going the other way and this guy saying what do you want
- 25:16from me? It looks like somebody we know
- 25:19you got De Niro When they rob Air France, it's gonna be a good
- 25:25summer. This is Karen again.
- 25:28Whenever the cops would raid her home, I always offered them
- 25:32coffee. Some of the wives like Mickey
- 25:35Conway, used to spit on the floor.
- 25:38She used to spit on her own floor.
- 25:39That never made any sense to me. That's such a good.
- 25:44One, I love that that line so much.
- 25:47Morries wigs don't come off when they're at Morries wigs shop.
- 25:50It's commercials playing. That that you know what I would
- 25:53say I'm changing my cringiest moment, the commercial Morris
- 25:56commercial you go when he jumps in the water off It's so.
- 26:00Embarrassing hurricane winds. So.
- 26:02I have a shirt that says Morries wigs wig.
- 26:04Shop I know you. Do and then also Henry Hills,
- 26:07like just just pay him his money.
- 26:10Let us just get the fuck outta here.
- 26:13Fuck him in the ear. Fuck him in the other year.
- 26:15They gets choked by the. By the phone I.
- 26:17Gotta drop the dime a million times they have buses ball.
- 26:20Did I? Did I?
- 26:21That's. Got money for that fucking
- 26:22commercial you know I got money from.
- 26:24Me that's seen as such low stakes like he's choking him
- 26:27with the with the phone. His wig comes off, he's smacking
- 26:30him with the phone, but then Henry takes a call and like
- 26:33leaves cause Karen's in trouble. Like it there's low stakes.
- 26:35Like you know, more is not gonna get killed.
- 26:37I mean, yeah, he wants his money.
- 26:39If he kills him, he's not gonna get.
- 26:40Paid. Yeah, he's just messing with
- 26:41him. Yeah, but he'll break his legs.
- 26:45And then you got Karen's mom. He's not Jewish.
- 26:49Did you know how these people live?
- 26:50Did you know what they? Were like your father, never
- 26:53stayed all night. Never stayed out all night.
- 26:56Dad never went out at all. Mom, keep out of it.
- 27:00You don't know how I feel. Feel.
- 27:02How you feel all that fucking oht My God, her mom is just.
- 27:08Do you quote that all the time? Yeah.
- 27:10Your father Will stayed out all night.
- 27:16Nobody goes to jail unless they want to.
- 27:19I got hmm, we didn't read and aristocrat.
- 27:23Yeah, that's a great one. Please.
- 27:24Yeah. Frying up steak in prison.
- 27:26That that's my last one I know. You more, I got a few more.
- 27:28Here, Yeah, we can talk about yours.
- 27:30Billy Bats scene when Tommy leaves pissed off.
- 27:34De Niro's telling Billy Batts salted him a little bit, insult
- 27:39him a little bit. Said that like, I'm waiting for
- 27:42a moment where there's an argument at like, a gathering
- 27:45and somebody's like, I don't know why he got so mad.
- 27:49Like, no, no, no, no, no. You insulted him a little bit.
- 27:52Maybe I should do it at work. Maybe.
- 27:54Yeah, just wait for someone to have a crash out and then say
- 27:57that. Yeah, what if they looked at you
- 27:59and they were like that from Good Fellas?
- 28:02Maybe it'll break the ice, maybe break the tension.
- 28:06Saturday night was for the wives, but Friday night was
- 28:08always for the girlfriends at the Copa.
- 28:10This ones funny because we, we, we go like what are we doing
- 28:13this weekend? Well Saturday night was the
- 28:15family night, but Friday night was always for mum and dad.
- 28:18So like, plan our weekends just as a joke.
- 28:21Yeah. Spider and Tommy, where's my
- 28:26fucking drink? I thought you said you were
- 28:28alright. I am alright.
- 28:29You're not alright. This spider and your way over
- 28:32here, Bring me a cutting water. Alright.
- 28:37What am I? What?
- 28:39Where's my drink? I guess your first.
- 28:41Drink You wanted to drink. I just asked you for a fucking
- 28:43drink. No, I thought.
- 28:44I thought you said that. You alright, Spider?
- 28:46What do you got me on? A fucking pain on mine.
- 28:47Brisket. I heard, I thought I heard
- 28:49someone say something. Spider, Spider.
- 28:51Fucking mumbling. Stuttering.
- 28:53Little do you know that problem. I thought you said you were
- 28:56alright. And then he shoots them, of
- 29:01course. As far back as I can remember, I
- 29:03always wanted to be a gangster. The opening line Iconic.
- 29:07Very iconic, yeah. Yeah.
- 29:09All right. Well, that's all the quotes.
- 29:11This is a handful here, but is this movie a classic?
- 29:16Stupid question at this point for this movie.
- 29:19Or cancelled in 2026. So this movie is obviously a
- 29:23classic with many moments that are controversial, but because
- 29:27it is a docudrama about real people, it kind of protects
- 29:33itself against being cancelled. We know the main characters are
- 29:37bad guys. That's why we're that's what
- 29:39we're exploring in this film. So you're not going to cancel
- 29:42one of these murderers for, you know, saying a racial slur or
- 29:47saying something sexist. We know they're bad.
- 29:49Guys, they're written based on real people.
- 29:51And they're real, yeah. It's real people who ended up in
- 29:54prison who got their comeuppance.
- 29:56It doesn't need to be cancelled because of the type of movie
- 29:59that it is. Yeah, I agree.
- 30:01This movie is a classic in so many ways.
- 30:04And you know, this movie is a classic because I worked with a
- 30:08guy one year, a couple years. He was from Nairobi, Kenya, and
- 30:14this guy had a thick accent and he knew about this movie.
- 30:19Like, I can't remember how it came up.
- 30:21I think it was talking about this movie with another
- 30:23colleague. And the Kenyan guy was like, oh,
- 30:26are you talking about good fellows?
- 30:28Good I was. Yeah, but I was like, you know,
- 30:31about this movie. He's like, yes, I've seen it.
- 30:33It's great movie. I was like, I was shocked.
- 30:37Like this movie has that much reach.
- 30:40Yeah, that a guy from Kenya has seen this and he's like, yeah,
- 30:44this movie is great cause you know, is over relation to these
- 30:49characters. But it's such a good and like
- 30:52seductive way of bringing somebody into the mob life.
- 30:56It's unreal. It is.
- 30:58Yeah, so this is a classic. Can you watch this with your
- 31:02parents? You can, but it's very violent
- 31:07and sexual, so you might be a little bit uncomfortable.
- 31:12Um, Karen goes down on Henry in the kitchen after he gives her
- 31:16some money. That's a little awkward.
- 31:18He grabs Sandy's butt very sexually in an implied sex
- 31:22scene, and there is a very sexual scene where he's feeling
- 31:25Karen up while her inner monologue plays.
- 31:29And that could be uncomfortable. But there aren't any full on sex
- 31:32scenes or nudity in the movie, so it wouldn't be that
- 31:35uncomfortable to watch with parents I don't think.
- 31:37There's not even a nip slip. I don't.
- 31:40Not that I can recall, yeah. Honestly the closest thing
- 31:42nudity in this movie is Samuel Jackson and his like.
- 31:46Tidy white. Tighty whities you don't bring
- 31:49any coffee. Yeah, this movie, you can watch
- 31:52it with your parents, but it's super violent.
- 31:55I think the the thing that would turn people off the most is the
- 31:58amount of F bombs, especially in the scene where Tommy is, you
- 32:03know, sitting with Henry and he's questioning him.
- 32:06What a funny how? Like I'm here to fucking amuse
- 32:08you. This movie is known for having
- 32:11very, very aggressive large amount of of swears.
- 32:14I don't think it broke the record.
- 32:16I think Wolf of Wall Street actually broke the record.
- 32:18Yeah, I think so. But this movie is known for
- 32:20having very heavy swearing. And then in a turn, in
- 32:23Tarantino's world, it's it's surprising that anybody gets
- 32:27that notoriety other than him. But yeah, full Wall Street is
- 32:31like 30 times more vulgar than this movie if you think about
- 32:34it. But.
- 32:35Yeah, and more sexual. That's what I mean.
- 32:37It's vulgar. Yeah.
- 32:38Like every way. Yeah.
- 32:40Yeah. You can watch it with your
- 32:41parents, but if you're a little older that's probably better,
- 32:45like maybe 13 or older. Have you have your discretion is
- 32:48advised. Yeah.
- 32:49What's your favorite chair? Who's your favorite character
- 32:51and least favorite supporting character?
- 32:54So my favorite supporting character is Polly.
- 32:57OHP. Interesting.
- 32:59He is unique, he's terrifying and scary when he wants to be,
- 33:03but he's also a big teddy bear. We kind of see just like how
- 33:07kind and sweet he is with Karen in the wedding scene, taking her
- 33:10around, introducing her to everybody, and her relationship
- 33:14with him after that is very kissy, huggy sweet.
- 33:17Do you know the real story about that?
- 33:18You know the real story about that?
- 33:19You might not like Polly after I tell you what.
- 33:22So apparently in real life, Pauly was constantly trying to
- 33:27get with Henry's wife. Oh, for real?
- 33:30Constantly in IRL he was constantly trying to get with
- 33:35Karen and. They.
- 33:38Had they had, they had a lot of beef about that?
- 33:40Like there was a lot of tension about it and they took it out of
- 33:43the movie because they thought it would take away from Karen's
- 33:47character and Paul's character. So.
- 33:51That was surprising, how liberties.
- 33:52I was surprised at how sweet he was to her at the wedding.
- 33:55I was like, wow, we're seeing like this grandfatherly, sweet,
- 33:58like fatherly side of Pauly, and I loved that about, but now
- 34:01you're telling me that. So you know the scene where they
- 34:05he's having he's on the outs with Karen and he he's at his
- 34:10girlfriends house at his grammas and Pauly shows up with the De
- 34:15Niro. Yeah.
- 34:16So Polly and Jimmy show up. To convince him to get.
- 34:18Back, Yeah. And he's like, he's like, I
- 34:20can't have them come over. They coming over and
- 34:21commiserating all day. I can't have, can't have, which
- 34:25is such good acting by Dinero. But basically he Polly says I
- 34:29need you to go down to Florida and take care of something with
- 34:31Jimmy, and then you come back, you go back to Karen,
- 34:34everything's gonna be beautiful, blah, blah, blah.
- 34:36So maybe I'm maybe I'm not misremembering, but basically
- 34:43Pauly did, he did go to jail, Henry.
- 34:46Yeah, that did really happen. But the true story is that, or
- 34:51what they say, is that Pauly sent him down there because he
- 34:54knew he was going to get busted, and he sent them there to get
- 34:58busted so that he could proposition Karen while he's in
- 35:02prison. Wow, that's the true story.
- 35:06Well you're ruining my favorite supporting character cause I
- 35:08don't like him that much anymore.
- 35:09You can. Still have a supporting
- 35:11character that you you you enjoyed but they're terrible
- 35:14people in real life but. Yeah, I I liked him in the movie
- 35:19because he was being so kind to care and I didn't think, well,
- 35:21yeah, I didn't think it had any dark.
- 35:23Well, that's the thing. I think they made the right call
- 35:26for the movie. Yeah, because I think any other
- 35:29way would have really kind of made you kind of give you the
- 35:34ick pretty early on in the movie.
- 35:36Giving me the. Yeah.
- 35:39Because I like, I was gonna say like he sort of, he's such a,
- 35:41he's such a teddy bear with these people that he likes and
- 35:44with Karen specifically. Um, but you also see his dark
- 35:48side several times in the movie when he walks out of the cab
- 35:51stand and everyone stops fooling around like they immediately.
- 35:55Everyone knew it went on that camps then.
- 35:56Yeah, they immediately get tense when they see Polly appear in
- 35:59the doorway. The restaurant owner hints at
- 36:03wanting Tommy to be killed, and you see Paul's expression
- 36:05changed to steel and he gives them that don't fuck with me
- 36:08look comes across his face and his face darkens.
- 36:11And that scene. Yeah.
- 36:12And when he speaks to Henry and Manson not to sell drugs and
- 36:15smacks him in his face. Yeah.
- 36:17I don't want anymore that shit. Just stay away from the garbage,
- 36:21you know what I mean? I'm not talking about what you
- 36:24did inside. You did what you had to do.
- 36:26I'm talking about now from now, here and now.
- 36:30Holly, why would I want to get into?
- 36:32That don't make a jerk out of me.
- 36:33Just don't do it. Just don't do it.
- 36:37You know that you're only out early cause I got you a job.
- 36:39I don't need this heat. Understand that.
- 36:41And you see anybody fucking around this shit, you're going
- 36:43to tell me, right? Yeah.
- 36:45That means anybody all right. Yeah, Yeah.
- 36:48He's like a very deep character, and I actually wish we'd learned
- 36:51more about him in the movie. Yeah, because he seems very
- 36:54interesting and learning that thing about him and Karen just
- 36:57now is really creepy. But in real life, so the actor
- 37:02who plays Pauly, he refused the role initially because he's a
- 37:08theatre actor and he's never played like a villain like that
- 37:11before. You thought it was disgusting,
- 37:13the character, the person you don't want to play him.
- 37:15And then he said he had no idea what to do.
- 37:17He's like, how do I? And he's like, I need the role,
- 37:20but it's the role of a lifetime. It's Scorsese movie.
- 37:22But he's like, I'm gonna blow it.
- 37:23I'm gonna ruin this movie. And then one day he was in the
- 37:26bathroom and he looked in the mirror, and he made a look in
- 37:30the mirror. And the look he gave himself, he
- 37:32said, terrify them. And he's like, I'm ready, which
- 37:36is kind of cool. That is cool.
- 37:39Who's your favorite sporting character?
- 37:41My favorite supporting character is Jimmy Conway.
- 37:44Jimmy the Gent I. Always do this.
- 37:48Jimmy Conway is a main character.
- 37:51He's not. He's supporting because he was
- 37:52nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
- 37:55OK, so you're wrong. Alright, what is support?
- 37:58Just cause No, cause he's on the front of the poster.
- 38:02Yeah, no, he's he's top build. That's why he's on the front
- 38:05cause he made the most money there's about.
- 38:08Henry, alright. Alright, you insulted me a
- 38:11little. Bit OK.
- 38:13Alright, tell me why you like Jimmy Conway.
- 38:14OK, Jimmy was the kind of guy he used to root for the bad guys in
- 38:18the movies. This guy has a steady terror
- 38:21about him in the movie. Like, he's so calm, but he has
- 38:26this look that he's just gonna eat you.
- 38:28He's going to, like, kill you. And apparently the guy in real
- 38:31life, the real Jimmy Burke, was even worse.
- 38:36Like he was 10 times worse. Joe Pesci won the Academy Award.
- 38:40This movie won 1 Oscar by the way.
- 38:42Huge. It was nominated 6 times.
- 38:44Yeah, but at once. Like Joe Pesci.
- 38:46Won Dances with Wolves, Won best picture.
- 38:48Get outta here bro. I've never seen that movie, so I
- 38:51can't I can't speak to. It but Dinero should have won my
- 38:54opinion. Hot take.
- 38:56He should have won best actor for this.
- 38:58Our best supporting actor, He used to call the real Henry Hill
- 39:02because they used them to when they were filming the movie.
- 39:05The real Henry Hill used to call him randomly and be like, you
- 39:08know, we have this scene where we're eating pasta and he's
- 39:11like, you know, did he put ketchup on the pasta?
- 39:14And he's like, yeah. He's like, how would he have
- 39:15taken the ketchup? Like, how would he extract it
- 39:17from the bottle? And then you see De Niro
- 39:21spinning the bottle to get the ketchup out, and that's how we
- 39:25used to do it. Why wouldn't De Niro have spoken
- 39:27to the real Jimmy Conway in prison?
- 39:30Oh, he wasn't. He wasn't gonna help.
- 39:33They were reaching out to him. Henry Hill was still in the
- 39:36witness protection. You don't think if you were in
- 39:40prison and you got calls from a big Hollywood actor, you
- 39:43wouldn't talk to him? He'd be like, I wanna do your
- 39:45character justice. How?
- 39:46How would you have shaken the ketchup?
- 39:48Bottle had Henry Hill at arms reach.
- 39:51I don't think they would call Jimmy Burke and.
- 39:55Maybe he was a better actor. He would.
- 39:57Have I mean OK. I hate on Denaro.
- 40:01Man, I'm, no, I'm just saying I would want to talk to the real
- 40:04guy just to like, get my character straight, Yeah.
- 40:08De Niro is amazing in this. Least favorite character is
- 40:11easy. Easily Karen's mother.
- 40:14She is so judgmental and miserable.
- 40:19You love quoting her though. And she's just an unhappy
- 40:22person. Like, yeah, your daughter is
- 40:25marrying a gang member, so I could understand that.
- 40:28Yeah, we would be unhappy too as the.
- 40:30Parent, for sure, any parent would be.
- 40:33And that's another thing about watching this as a parent.
- 40:35But yeah, she's just miserable. Even like 10, even at the
- 40:39wedding, she's unhappy. Like just pretend to be happy.
- 40:42She's not at the real wedding. They did a fake wedding for them
- 40:45and they didn't change ceremony with.
- 40:47Ceremony for them, but she was you know, anyways, yeah, not a
- 40:51not a not a not a pleasant character.
- 40:53Same actress though she was in Sopranos.
- 40:55Lot of Sopranos connections. A lot of separate, yeah, half,
- 40:58half this cast was in Sopranos. OK, your turn.
- 41:00The fucking babysitter, he tells.
- 41:05Her. Do not use the house phone.
- 41:08Yes, and she immediately picks up the house phone and uses it
- 41:12and gets him. Caught after all.
- 41:13Her Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bullshit.
- 41:15What does she do? She picks up the phone and makes
- 41:18the call from inside the house. And that's what gets him cut.
- 41:22It's. Her fault.
- 41:23I have a hot take about that later.
- 41:25It's really offensive. Yeah, so she's, she's my least
- 41:28favorite, but I, I do want to just, I have to mention Billy
- 41:30Bats in this category, in this category because he was such an
- 41:35asshole and he kind of deserved to get killed.
- 41:38Um, why are you grilling Tommy so hard?
- 41:42Drinks. Listen back.
- 41:43Drinks. Drinks on the House.
- 41:45He might not know how psycho Tommy is because he had been in
- 41:48prison, but regardless, why are you running your mouth around
- 41:53all these mobsters? They kill people for a living.
- 41:57You got some brass ones talking? That much shit, you can't touch
- 42:00them. Yeah, but still, like, do you
- 42:04really think you're that invincible?
- 42:05Yeah, you are. You're not allowed.
- 42:07You have to get a sit down and you have to get OK, otherwise
- 42:10you could be the one who. Gets well, they did kill him, so
- 42:12he got whacked anyway. Yeah.
- 42:13And then so maybe if you don't run your mouth, you can live a
- 42:16little longer. For sure.
- 42:18Billy Bats, Yeah, he's not the best character.
- 42:21No, he's wicked actor also in Sopranos.
- 42:23Also in Sopranos, yeah. OK, cultural impact.
- 42:26So this may be Scorsese's masterpiece.
- 42:30This movie revolutionized the gangster genre.
- 42:34Yes, it did, because we had The Godfather, which it it had
- 42:39gangsters looking very quite respectable.
- 42:41Almost. Yeah.
- 42:42And then this movie shows us the grittier side, the drug fueled
- 42:47side. It shows us how violent it is,
- 42:50how it can affect your mental health.
- 42:52It's it's a, it's a grittier look.
- 42:56Yeah, there's other movies like Scarface, which isn't really
- 42:59about the mob. It's more of a drug dealing
- 43:02movie which came out before this.
- 43:03But this movie took the mob and it like you said, it made it
- 43:08less pretty. It it shows you the ugly side,
- 43:12not the not the godfather doesn't, but godfather.
- 43:16They seem like respectable businessmen almost and godfather
- 43:19this it really shows. Two different.
- 43:21Vibes. It shows that the underbelly and
- 43:26it It just shows how masterful Scorsese is and without this
- 43:31movie we likely never would have had Sopranos.
- 43:34The film is often cited as the precursor and it has 20 plus
- 43:39cast members from Goodfellas that appeared in.
- 43:42Surprise. Do you remember when we first
- 43:43started Sopranos? It was years later.
- 43:46We just never got around to it and everyone was like, you gotta
- 43:49watch Sopranos. I was pregnant with her son when
- 43:51we started. Watching they're like, you love
- 43:52Goodfellas, you're gonna love Sopranos.
- 43:54So we start watching it and we. Ohhhhh my.
- 43:58God and everybody's in it. We should rewatch it honestly,
- 44:02it's so amazing. Everybody from Goodfellas.
- 44:04Is in it so many, Christopher? Christopher, you've got Lorraine
- 44:08Bracco. She's the therapist.
- 44:09Yeah, Oh my God. You forgot it.
- 44:12Oh my God, Lorraine, that she, he said.
- 44:14He's one of the other guys from the other five families.
- 44:17Billy Batts is in it. Yeah, it's, it's insane, man.
- 44:22So, so much crossover and and it it really did influence Sopranos
- 44:26as a show. Like we never would have had
- 44:28that show had this movie not been a thing.
- 44:30Good fellas walked so Sopranos could run.
- 44:34Truly, truly. It's highly quoted in pop
- 44:37culture as well. From the funny housing to the as
- 44:41far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster
- 44:44scene. Like we hear those quotes all
- 44:47over pop culture. And on top of that, the film did
- 44:50earn 6 Oscar nominations and only won once, unfortunately,
- 44:54with Joe Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor.
- 44:57But it should have. It should have won several
- 44:59because it's so well done. Yeah, this, this movie is
- 45:02cultural impact. Like I told the story about the
- 45:04guy from Kenya. Like, I couldn't believe it.
- 45:07This guy sits on that movie. He was pretty.
- 45:09He's pretty vanilla, that guy too.
- 45:11And he's like, oh, you like good fellows.
- 45:13I was like yo. So it hit international.
- 45:15Audience. Exactly.
- 45:16I'm very surprised. Yeah, the soundtrack.
- 45:20On the impeccable. Yeah, forget.
- 45:22Like the soundtrack is good, but the way that Scorsese timed it
- 45:26with the edits, the way the the music drops at the right time,
- 45:30the type of songs. Sometimes you'll go through like
- 45:332-3 songs in one scene and you won't even realize till.
- 45:37Later, so good at choosing songs that add a dramatic effect to a
- 45:40scenes life is but a dream during the wedding scene and
- 45:45Lorraines sorry Karens like beautiful smiling face.
- 45:49It adds such like such a vibe the movie The like we said
- 45:54earlier. Then he kissed me playing while
- 45:56Henry walks her through the back of the restaurant.
- 45:59I can't imagine that scene with any other song.
- 46:01No other song would have worked exactly.
- 46:02He picked the perfect song. He's a genius.
- 46:05Amazing. And then also Layla during the
- 46:08dead bodies montage. Yeah, and and countless other
- 46:11iconic songs. But but those three are the ones
- 46:13that I really I noticed and I always notice when the movies
- 46:16playing because they add something.
- 46:18And they really make you feel how you need to feel for the
- 46:21rest of the. Movie.
- 46:22Yeah, whether they want you to feel Alan Cawley or like they
- 46:25want you to feel dreamy and then love, or they want you to feel
- 46:27excited on this new date, those are the songs get you to that
- 46:30emotion. Yeah.
- 46:33So yeah, with cultural impact. Everyone who's seen this movie
- 46:37loves it. If you haven't seen it, what's
- 46:39the matter with you? Who gets a spin off?
- 46:43So I have two um 1A sitcom about Karen's parents.
- 46:51Oh my God, because this when? The.
- 46:55Before, after. Well, it's in in a real world it
- 46:59would never happen. But like the scene where she's
- 47:01yelling at Karen and Karen's yelling back and the fathers.
- 47:03Like laugh track? Sleepily sitting on the couch
- 47:06like you can imagine. Unable to digest a decent meal
- 47:09in six weeks. It almost has Everybody Loves
- 47:12Raymond vibes a little bit, so I could see it being as it calm
- 47:16and then also, like I said, a movie about Polly.
- 47:20Like I said, I need to know more about him.
- 47:22He's such an interesting character and I think there's a
- 47:25lot more to unpack about his life.
- 47:27For example, how did he become a mob boss?
- 47:30How did he how did he meet his wife?
- 47:33The downfall of his empire? I, I want those questions
- 47:36answered with Polly. I want a similar movie to
- 47:38Goodfellas but from Polyp's point of view as him and his
- 47:43young years and how he he rose to that level in the mob.
- 47:48Yeah, I honestly, I everybody basically dies in this movie.
- 47:52So, I mean, the spinoff would be Henry Hill's life after he goes
- 47:58into witness protection. That wouldn't be interesting.
- 48:00Well, The thing is, it's actually interesting because
- 48:03there's a documentary about it and the guy is a complete mess.
- 48:07He was still addicted to drugs. He kept getting in touch with
- 48:12people in that life and they kept having to relocate this
- 48:15guy. Apparently he was an absolute
- 48:18nightmare. So anyway.
- 48:21I don't wanna see him. That's my.
- 48:23Spin off I don't wanna see him eating his egg noodles with
- 48:25ketchup. Yeah, he's dead now.
- 48:28Double feature. So double feature the only The
- 48:33only two movies I can think of are also Scorsese.
- 48:35Sure, you could watch Casino after this if you're really in
- 48:38De Niro mood. Which ones first though?
- 48:41This one first? This.
- 48:42First thing casino OK De Niro's significantly older casino so
- 48:46you it's true for the for the for the timeline of Deniro's
- 48:49Life OK and then also a lot of people say that Wolf of Wall
- 48:52Street is this movie just on on Wall Street it's.
- 48:56The same movie on Wall Street. So you you could watch it as
- 48:59kind of a compare contrast. Obviously good fellows 1st and
- 49:01Wall Street second because of like when the when the movies
- 49:04took place. The ending of Goodfellas.
- 49:07You know when he's walking out of the the stand off the stand
- 49:11and talking to the 4th wall, He breaks the 4th wall with the
- 49:13camera at the beginning of The Wolf of Wall Street, Leo's
- 49:17talking, he breaks the 4th wall. He's talking to the camera about
- 49:19all the pills he takes and. Everything.
- 49:21Yeah, it's a trope Scorsese uses, but not in every movie.
- 49:23Like there's no wall. There's no 4th wall in Casino.
- 49:25No I know, but that's what I mean.
- 49:27That's why it's so similar the 2.
- 49:28Movies. Yeah, they they are similar.
- 49:31And honestly, even Ray Liotta's voice, Yeah, it sounds like
- 49:37DiCaprio. I think DiCaprio is doing his
- 49:39best impression. Yeah, maybe it's that.
- 49:43There's some piece, really. Yeah, they they, they sound
- 49:45similar to. Yeah.
- 49:46Rest in peace. Truly, truly a great actor.
- 49:48But yeah, for me, the double feature, just watching Scorsese
- 49:51movies just makes me want more Scorsese.
- 49:54I know it gets you in a certain mood.
- 49:57Yeah. So that's that's my thought.
- 49:59For me, Double Feature Casino was a no brainer.
- 50:02Yeah, another one just to like, it's almost like Goodfellas, but
- 50:08you know, different flavor. So instead of like spicy, you go
- 50:11with a little bit sweet and sour or something.
- 50:13I would put The Departed because they're both crime dramas and
- 50:19yeah, it's a little bit different of a flavor.
- 50:22Wolf of Wall Street to me is two similar and it's a lesser movie.
- 50:30Even though we've lost, it's really good.
- 50:31So no, it's really good. But when you put it next to
- 50:35Goodfellas, it's like, you know, you're at the top, top tier now,
- 50:40so you've got your gold medal and you've got your silver that
- 50:44lost. I gotta disagree.
- 50:45One, I gotta disagree. They're in the same league.
- 50:48No, not even close. They are.
- 50:50How many times have you rewatchable for Wall Street?
- 50:52The first time you watched it you said you hated it and then I
- 50:55made you rewatch. It I did hate it and then I
- 50:57rewatched it and now it's it's probably in my top ten favorite
- 51:00movies of all time. I mean, it's a great movie,
- 51:04don't get me wrong. It's peak Scorsese, but this is
- 51:08peak peak. It's like the ultimate.
- 51:11That's the thing. You have great and then you have
- 51:14even greater. So leave a penny, take a penny
- 51:18which which scene you taken out? Which scene you putting in?
- 51:22What's missing from this movie? I don't think anything's
- 51:26missing, but honestly I would take out the 2 spider scenes.
- 51:32What? There's the two spiders, the
- 51:35they're too upsetting. I understand they have to be
- 51:38part. Of the.
- 51:38Setting OK I understand they have to be part of the movie so
- 51:41we see how psycho Tommy is, but it fucks me up to watch.
- 51:46It yeah, it just kills because he was, he was innocent.
- 51:48He's. Just a kid working as a
- 51:50bartender. And Tommy's drunk, flailing his
- 51:53loaded gun around, dance for me like he's so unhinged.
- 51:56It makes me, it makes me fear for everyone in that room.
- 52:00And then he kills him. He's like, he's like, what was
- 52:02he? Called a good shot, he said it
- 52:04was a good shot, yeah. But didn't he say he's like,
- 52:06he's a rat? He's like and rat.
- 52:09Yeah, that child has a mother. Yeah, it's dark.
- 52:13Like as a mother you just shot a kid because he told you to go F
- 52:17yourself. After you shot after.
- 52:19You shot him in the foot. Bones are shattered.
- 52:23Yeah, I, I don't like it. It's it it makes me feel that
- 52:27whole scene makes me feel sick. So honestly, I, I wanna take
- 52:30them out of the movie, but I understand that they have to be
- 52:32in there. Yeah.
- 52:34And also I I just want to note that this this story is a little
- 52:39bit disjointed. And this is common in Scorsese
- 52:43movies. It's a really good movie, don't
- 52:45get me wrong, but the story doesn't always flow smoothly.
- 52:48And things happen throughout the movie without explanation.
- 52:52Like what? And this is a common thing that
- 52:53Scorsese does. So one of the things is Janice
- 52:57being swapped with Sandy. His girlfriends change.
- 52:59Yeah. We're never told why.
- 53:02We never see how it happens. Just suddenly he's out of prison
- 53:05and now it's Sandy and not Janice.
- 53:08I mean they hint at it. Yeah.
- 53:10He gives her a look. Yeah, and then he goes to jail.
- 53:14And then Karen says I don't want to hear another word about her.
- 53:16And he's like, never. Yeah, but he leaves prison and
- 53:19he needs someone to chop his dope.
- 53:21So who's he gonna go to? He's gonna go to a girl that has
- 53:23a thing for. Him, yeah, but that's that is
- 53:27that is assuming that you have that you have an an audience
- 53:30that is going to fill in those blanks.
- 53:33What do you mean? Which we know is not always the
- 53:35case. So I Jane is being swapped with
- 53:37Sandy. They don't explain it and also.
- 53:39Indeed, it's a gumar. You mean They mean nothing to
- 53:42him? That's the thing.
- 53:43Yeah, but we don't even see it happen.
- 53:45You have to show us. I disagree.
- 53:47And then also. That would have been a scene
- 53:50that I would have taken out because you don't need it.
- 53:52The movie is going too fast. Well, also Henry and Karen's
- 53:56coke addiction, neither of them are addicted to anything.
- 53:59And then suddenly we have that scene with with the helicopter
- 54:03where he's very paranoid and they're both just suddenly
- 54:05addicts. This was not a slow rise.
- 54:08Once we started, no, but once he started dealing, he started
- 54:11doing both of them. That's usually yeah, they go
- 54:14neck and. Neck, yeah, but suddenly they're
- 54:16both drug. Addicts.
- 54:17Yeah, it goes. Neck and neck out of nowhere.
- 54:20Yeah, so cocaine is a hell of a. Drug.
- 54:21Well, I'm just. It is.
- 54:24In Scorsese movies, and in this movie particularly, there are
- 54:27some gaps. And I understand that it takes
- 54:29place over 3 decades. You can't show us everything.
- 54:32Yeah, you can. But sometimes Scorsese has
- 54:34trouble making stories flow the way they should.
- 54:38Go. I'm just saying because we don't
- 54:41always see everything that we need to see and that's expecting
- 54:45us to fill in an awful lot with with no contact.
- 54:47I disagree. I I filled in the blanks.
- 54:49I didn't have any concern. You know what?
- 54:52I would take out the scene where Henry is sitting at the
- 54:58Copacabana and they're talking about they're with the
- 55:01girlfriends or the Dumars and he's there with Janice and then
- 55:05he ends up at her apartment. I didn't need the Copacabana
- 55:09scene. Yeah, they do a slow pan of
- 55:11everybody's face. Yeah, And it takes like a full.
- 55:13Minute. But you know what, it's really
- 55:14good directing. He's he's they're watching a
- 55:17live performance and the guy singing, he's like, pretend you
- 55:20don't see her at all. You know, like he's thinking
- 55:24about what he's doing. And he's like, I'm probably
- 55:26gonna go home with Janice. And it's just really well
- 55:30directed. But I would take it out.
- 55:33Not a huge fan of this Janice person.
- 55:35Like the whole scenario with it. I'm not for me, but I don't know
- 55:40what I'd put in. I want to see the heist.
- 55:43I wanna see the Lufthansa heist. They never showed it.
- 55:45They just show Henry and then the radio talking.
- 55:48I wanna see those guys rob the place.
- 55:50Well, that's I'm saying there's some stuff missing.
- 55:53Yeah, but it's two hours and 26 minutes, so they had to cut
- 55:56some. They had to, like, keep it
- 55:58tight, you know? I understand that it just it
- 56:00like this happens with other Scorsese movies too.
- 56:02There feels like there's a little bit of a gap.
- 56:04This movie is not about those extra characters though, that's
- 56:07the thing. And it's not about the crime
- 56:10it's about. It's about Henry.
- 56:11It's about Henry and what he is experiencing cause he wasn't
- 56:15there at the heist. Yeah, right.
- 56:17He wasn't planning. Yeah, him in the shower
- 56:19celebrating the highest is is really all we need to know about
- 56:22Henry. 'S lazy Sunday vibes.
- 56:26Not really no similar to Titanic it's a little bit too intense
- 56:32and upsetting to calmly watch on a lazy Sunday for me yeah we
- 56:36have seen it a lot so maybe for us we could but for other people
- 56:41out there that have maybe only seen it once or twice yeah this
- 56:44movie deserves to be like for you to give it your full
- 56:47attention to watch it in a dark room honest a lot of Friday or
- 56:50Saturday night with the lights off giving it your full
- 56:53attention It's it's it's not to passively.
- 56:56Watch this movie. 100% lazy Sunday vibes for me and I'll
- 56:59tell you why and what I was doing.
- 57:03I used to play cards Saturday nights, Friday nights, mostly
- 57:06Saturday nights but with some friends.
- 57:09And we'd be up all night talking and we would quote this movie,
- 57:13you know, making fun of each other or whatever, quote other
- 57:15movies. And then the next day I'd be
- 57:16home and I'd get up, I'd make some breakfast and I would sit
- 57:21with my coffee and my eggs and I would play this movie and I
- 57:26would just eat it watching breakfast.
- 57:28And I've seen it a million times.
- 57:30So maybe I wouldn't finish it. Maybe I would like head out and
- 57:33go get some stuff done. And then you come back and you
- 57:36finish it off. It was such a lazy and, or if
- 57:38you just get up and it's on TV and you're at the part where you
- 57:42know, Henry's grown up now and he they, they steal that truck
- 57:46with he steals that truck with Tommy.
- 57:48I I think it's lazy Sunday vibes for sure.
- 57:51Yeah, but this is coming from somebody who adores this movie,
- 57:55somebody who's seen it so many times.
- 57:57Like for you it could be, but I'm saying as as a movie itself
- 58:01for most people. You want to sit and watch it
- 58:04nonstop. Yeah, it's not.
- 58:05It's not something you can watch passively.
- 58:07That's the thing too. And I did say like when this
- 58:09movie playing, there's no scene where you could get up and go to
- 58:12the bathroom. There's very few of them.
- 58:15You know, the Copacabana scene with Janice, you could go to the
- 58:18bathroom, but everything else, like what happened, what
- 58:21happened, what I miss, it's so fast.
- 58:23You have to be there. Well, like I said at the
- 58:24beginning, we it was hard for us to take notes during this
- 58:27because when you're looking down at your phone, you you miss so
- 58:30much if you're looking down for a few minutes.
- 58:32Yeah, Movie alias. You got any other names?
- 58:36I got a couple here. So I obviously chose Wise Guy
- 58:39because that's the name of the book it's.
- 58:41Based I put wise guys. Too.
- 58:42Yeah. So I thought Wise Guy would be a
- 58:44good one. And then just if you if, if it
- 58:46was a little bit more of a documentary, you could call it
- 58:48the Henry Hill Story. Oh yeah, that's not bad.
- 58:51Yeah, but that's all I have. OHS, I've got.
- 58:54I've always wanted to be. I always wanted to be a
- 58:56gangster. It's a long title, but I think
- 58:58it fits. And the life because, he says at
- 59:02the end of the movie. I missed the life, he does say.
- 59:05That yeah, that that could definitely work.
- 59:07Some shower thoughts. So I have a lot.
- 59:10I have I have a laundry list. Me too.
- 59:13OK, go ahead. OK, so where we talked about
- 59:17this a little bit, but the funny housing is really a testament to
- 59:22amazing acting and it really shows you why Joe Pesci won for
- 59:25supporting actor that year. You can literally cut the
- 59:29tension with a knife. Even if you are passively
- 59:32watching this movie in that scene comes up, you will notice
- 59:35everyone in the room go quiet and look at the TV because it's
- 59:37absolutely engrossing. Yeah.
- 59:39And it lets us know that Tommy is not to be messed with.
- 59:43And he's unhinged. And my favorite thing after
- 59:45seeing this movie now bunch of times is when I meet someone,
- 59:49it's rare now but that they haven't seen this movie and they
- 59:53come over and we have a movie night and we play this movie for
- 59:56them. And you know, watching, I don't
- 1:00:00watch that scene. I watched the person's face.
- 1:00:02Watching Tommy, you know, asking.
- 1:00:05Yeah, you'll you'll get chills. He's so.
- 1:00:08Funny, like Henry almost takes him seriously.
- 1:00:10He knows this guy well and. He almost takes seriously so
- 1:00:12many memes cause he's so unhinged.
- 1:00:14That Ray Liotta laughing meme is from this scene.
- 1:00:17Oh really Otis fake laugh is so good that acting like I don't
- 1:00:21know if maybe somebody made him laugh for real before that scene
- 1:00:24so cause it's it's really good so.
- 1:00:26Apparently Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci knew what the scene was
- 1:00:31going on. Nobody else knew.
- 1:00:34Nobody else knew that he was gonna do that.
- 1:00:35It was improv he went to. So Joe Pesci went to Scorsese
- 1:00:38and said, listen, this happened to me in real life when he was a
- 1:00:42busboy. And he's like, I want to do it.
- 1:00:45I want the scene. And Scorsese is famously known
- 1:00:49for letting his actors kind of roam free and do their own
- 1:00:52thing. That's why a lot of his movies,
- 1:00:55there's some scenes like even with Leo and all these movies,
- 1:00:57like he lets his actors try things that aren't even script,
- 1:01:01and it works. And this is one of them.
- 1:01:03It's funny. You're a funny guy.
- 1:01:06You mean the way I talk? But.
- 1:01:10You know, you, you're just funny.
- 1:01:12It's, you know, the way you tell the story and everything.
- 1:01:15You're funny How? I mean, what's funny about it?
- 1:01:19Tom, you know you got it all wrong.
- 1:01:20Anthony, he's a big boy. He knows what he said.
- 1:01:23What do you say? Funny how?
- 1:01:28What just you know, you're, you're funny.
- 1:01:31You mean, so let me understand this because I, you know, maybe
- 1:01:33it's me. I'm a little fucked up.
- 1:01:34Maybe. But I'm funny.
- 1:01:36How? I mean funny, like I'm a clown.
- 1:01:37I amuse you, I make you laugh. I'm here to fucking amuse you.
- 1:01:42What do you mean funny? Funny.
- 1:01:43How am I? Funny, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta
- 1:01:46knew this, what they were gonna do, but nobody else knew.
- 1:01:50So the other actors, that's why. Like if you look at the scene
- 1:01:53again, it's a wide shot. You see the other actors.
- 1:01:55There's no close up of Joe Pesci or Ray Liotta.
- 1:01:58You see the people sitting next to them and you watch them and
- 1:02:02you see their real reactions. It's really amazing.
- 1:02:06But they stay in character because he calls him Tommy.
- 1:02:08Oh, for sure, but they don't like they not sure.
- 1:02:10Like he's walking this line where they're like, is he acting
- 1:02:13or is he pissed off for real? Like what is he doing?
- 1:02:16This isn't in the script. And you, you don't stop, right,
- 1:02:19because Scorsese hasn't said cut like they're rolling films.
- 1:02:23So it's just really cool when you when you know.
- 1:02:27That he does have like a a loser, a little bit of improv
- 1:02:30style. Margot Robbie talks about him,
- 1:02:32Wolf of Wall Street. When when Leo says who who after
- 1:02:36she throws the water on him pick him up she goes who who What?
- 1:02:39Are you a fucking owl That wasn't in the script?
- 1:02:45Was that one of the kids sneezing or was that a cry?
- 1:02:48Was a cough Sorry Margot Robbie? Yeah, Margot Robbie in in Wolf
- 1:02:54of Wall Street actually throws the water on Leah and he he goes
- 1:02:57who? Who?
- 1:02:58She goes who, who? What are you a fucking owl?
- 1:03:00That wasn't in the script. Yeah, was the water throwing in
- 1:03:02the script? The water throwing was in the
- 1:03:04script, but she was told by somebody who was like a a Jersey
- 1:03:08person with that accent, they're like, you should say who, who,
- 1:03:11what are you, a fucking owl? You should work that involves.
- 1:03:13Yeah, like somebody. Somebody suggested that to her.
- 1:03:16Sometimes she worked it in. Sometimes you gotta let the crew
- 1:03:20and the cast to come up with something.
- 1:03:22Well, some of the best moments. Phone flare.
- 1:03:24Yeah. What else you got, Tommy?
- 1:03:27And Jimmy? Are killers Yep Henry is not a
- 1:03:31killer he. Only we only.
- 1:03:34Really see him get violent a couple times in the movie, like
- 1:03:36when he pistol whips Karen's neighbor.
- 1:03:39He's not that violent of a person and he's not a murderer,
- 1:03:43so this makes him more relatable to the audience, but apparently
- 1:03:48the real one was not. This like chill of a person
- 1:03:52right? No, he's even in the movie.
- 1:03:54He's still a bad person. But we're able to relate to him
- 1:03:57because he's just as horrified when he sees Tommy, shoots
- 1:04:01Spider, when he sees Tommy and Jimmy murder Billy Bats, when he
- 1:04:06when Jimmy suggests that he wants to kill Maury.
- 1:04:09Yeah. It's the part of the life that
- 1:04:11he doesn't like. Yeah, we see.
- 1:04:12Henry disturbed and trying to save people.
- 1:04:15He tries to save Mori, so he's more relatable to the audience
- 1:04:18in those moments. Even though he is a bad person,
- 1:04:22we're able to cling on to his humanity while it takes us on
- 1:04:26this ride. And I thought that that was
- 1:04:27interesting. Yeah, that's a, that's a good
- 1:04:31point. I mean.
- 1:04:32He he's come off. So he comes off in the movie is
- 1:04:34like a, a softer version. Yeah.
- 1:04:36But when it's time to go, he has to like beat people up.
- 1:04:40And you know, you gonna pay, you gonna pay like he's beating up
- 1:04:43that guy in the car and then he ends up in prison.
- 1:04:45We definitely see him get violent.
- 1:04:47We see him do some messed up. Things but he is definitely the
- 1:04:50least bad of the three amigos. Basically, another thing I
- 1:04:55noticed is that young Karen is so beautiful and fresh faced and
- 1:05:01you just slowly see the lifestyle take a toll on.
- 1:05:03Yeah, the cocaine starts to Yeah, she talks about.
- 1:05:07It in the Hostess. Party scene like these women
- 1:05:10wore too much makeup, they had spat bad skin and they wore
- 1:05:13cheap clothing, a lot of pantsuits and double knits.
- 1:05:18She doesn't think it'll happen to her, but we see.
- 1:05:20It happening to her. Throughout the movie, um, and
- 1:05:23it's, it's just interesting because, you know, people never
- 1:05:26think that these things are going to affect them, but we
- 1:05:29literally see her become less beautiful, less starry eyed and
- 1:05:33and like kind of uglier from the lifestyle that she's going
- 1:05:37through with him because it's, it's stressful and it, it ruins
- 1:05:40you. Yeah, so.
- 1:05:44You see it on Henry as well, like the cocaine is really
- 1:05:48settled in after a certain couple scenes and you're like,
- 1:05:51OK, this guy's addicted to coke and so is his wife.
- 1:05:55Yeah, yeah. Anything else?
- 1:05:58Yeah, just a couple of moments that I.
- 1:06:00Noticed when Karen asks Henry for money, she shows him how big
- 1:06:03of a stack she wants instead of amount.
- 1:06:06Yeah, I thought that was cute. When touch when?
- 1:06:10Yeah. When Tommy murdered somebody.
- 1:06:11He's more upset about the blood on the floor than the fact that
- 1:06:14he just murdered a person, which is pretty backwards.
- 1:06:20How come when they're in prison, it looks like they're in an
- 1:06:24apartment and they have? A kitchen and stuff.
- 1:06:26Like, that's not like any person I've ever seen.
- 1:06:28They talk about how they made these extravagant meals.
- 1:06:31They owned the joint. What kind of prison is that
- 1:06:33where they? Have like an apartment.
- 1:06:34Henry goes out. At the end.
- 1:06:36So where is he going? So when celebrities.
- 1:06:39And Rich. People go to jail.
- 1:06:41They don't really, the really rich ones, they don't really go
- 1:06:44to jail. They go to like this because
- 1:06:46prisons in the US are a lot of them are privately owned.
- 1:06:49So these really rich people, what they do is they pay a lot
- 1:06:52of money to the the government, like to the city or to the
- 1:06:58state, and they basically buy a ticket to these really bougie
- 1:07:02prisons. And they are there with other
- 1:07:05bougie rich people and thought that was only for nonviolent
- 1:07:08criminals. No, they find.
- 1:07:10Their ways like money talks, OK. Yeah, and then in this they're
- 1:07:13mobs. So they they, he literally says
- 1:07:15we run the we run the joint, you know.
- 1:07:18So they probably what they did was they took this old maybe
- 1:07:22Infirmary, which suits, you know, it could fit like, let's
- 1:07:27say 20 beds and they just turned it into a huge ass apartment for
- 1:07:30them. He literally says he's like, we
- 1:07:33lived on our own. He's like we didn't live.
- 1:07:35He's like, you see Rose and Rosa guys walking and, you know,
- 1:07:39striped jumpsuits. He's like, we lived our on our
- 1:07:42own. They did their own thing.
- 1:07:43Yeah. They had a little apartment.
- 1:07:44They made extravagant meals. Yeah.
- 1:07:46And they had had this private, they have privacy that's.
- 1:07:50I mean. I thought that was pretty crazy.
- 1:07:53Prison. That's just like a vacation.
- 1:07:54That's going on the lamb, right? Yeah, but it's the prison at
- 1:07:57this point. So for me, I got you anymore.
- 1:08:02I have a couple more but you can go for bed.
- 1:08:05So for me I got. This movie is the king of freeze
- 1:08:10frame character intros and narration.
- 1:08:13So in the beginning they freeze frame a lot of a lot of
- 1:08:16characters. You know when Henry's getting
- 1:08:19beat by his dad, when he gets a letter?
- 1:08:22He hasn't been to school in months and then he's narrating,
- 1:08:26and then the mailman gets thrown into the pizza oven and he's
- 1:08:31like, that was it? No more letters from anybody.
- 1:08:35A lot of movies try this. A lot of movies do it now.
- 1:08:38It's a very common thing. One movie that I know does it
- 1:08:41pretty well is Snatch. Snatch does a lot of freeze
- 1:08:46frame intros in the beginning of the characters.
- 1:08:49And then there's a lot of moments where they freeze frame
- 1:08:52to tell like the audience what's going on or why things are
- 1:08:56happening the way they are because we're not familiar with
- 1:08:59that world. But there's some movies that
- 1:09:01they use that trope several times, and a lot of movies.
- 1:09:05It doesn't work. Yeah, when you're watching it,
- 1:09:07you're like, oht, they're doing that thing.
- 1:09:10But and you know, of course he does it with music, but not a
- 1:09:15soundtrack. Like he does it like, sorry, not
- 1:09:17a score. He does it with real songs from
- 1:09:20real artists. And so does Snatch, and that's
- 1:09:22by Guy Ritchie. So that's a great movie.
- 1:09:26It's one of my favorite movies. Snatch, it's underrated, I
- 1:09:28think. But they use a lot of similar
- 1:09:31tricks. Tommy and Henry set up Sunny to
- 1:09:34go to Pauly and become partners so Paulie could take as much
- 1:09:39money as possible from the restaurant.
- 1:09:41Hmm. And claim the insurance when
- 1:09:44they burn it down. That was a setup.
- 1:09:47They purposely made that guy uncomfortable at the Bamboo
- 1:09:50Lounge, the owner Sunny, so that he would go to Polly and make us
- 1:09:55to be partners. So then he would have to pay
- 1:09:57Pauly a bunch of they love that place and it really doesn't
- 1:10:00matter. It's a money.
- 1:10:01It's it's. They're they're laundering.
- 1:10:03Stolen goods out of there. And then Paul, he's not putting
- 1:10:07any money into the restaurant. The restaurant's losing money.
- 1:10:09And then what does he have to do?
- 1:10:11He has to pay Pauley his share, his protection money, right?
- 1:10:15Because that's what they did. Henry and Tommy went there and
- 1:10:17they basically made this guy go get protection from Polly for a
- 1:10:22fee. And then what happened?
- 1:10:23They ended up burning it down. That was the whole end game,
- 1:10:27which is crazy. Um, the narration A.
- 1:10:33Lot of movies do narration but. They do it and it's like, not
- 1:10:37done well. This movie is the king of
- 1:10:39narration. It's one of the best.
- 1:10:41Well, that's up there with Shawshank.
- 1:10:43It's up there with Terminator. Terminator 2 when?
- 1:10:48Sarah Connor is. Talking.
- 1:10:50It's just so well done. And it goes from Henry to Karen,
- 1:10:54like, seamlessly, and then it goes back to Henry.
- 1:10:58It's just so well done. Yeah, well, that that's the
- 1:11:00thing about this movie. It it has things.
- 1:11:02That are considered cliches now, but it it's it's the reason that
- 1:11:06they're considered cliches because it did it perfectly so
- 1:11:08now nobody else can measure up yeah this was this was one of
- 1:11:11those movies that, you know it was the.
- 1:11:13OG yeah, Henry's wardrobe his. Suits are timeless.
- 1:11:18And like he looks he's dressed so well in this movie.
- 1:11:21Even knit button up shirts are my favorite is short.
- 1:11:24Sleeve knit button ups. They just, they're back in style
- 1:11:27again. They are, yeah.
- 1:11:29They just some of the nicest patterns.
- 1:11:31This guys wearing. They look so good and my
- 1:11:33favorite is his red. Leather blazer when he.
- 1:11:36Goes to beat up Karens neighbor. It's like a suit jacket blazer.
- 1:11:40Yeah, that's iconic red leather. It's gorgeous.
- 1:11:43I love this shirt wearing. When Karen yells at him.
- 1:11:46Outside of the cab stand, Yeah, I love that shirt.
- 1:11:50I like. I wish.
- 1:11:51I could find that shirt. For you, my favorite for him is
- 1:11:55probably. Because they really did his like
- 1:11:58they're mob guys, right? They they like to dress nice.
- 1:12:00But my favorite of his is the scene where Sonny's going to
- 1:12:04Pauly and ask him to be in the restaurant business and Henry
- 1:12:08smoking a cigar and the shirts open with like a like a white
- 1:12:12undershirt and he's just chilling.
- 1:12:14It's it's a summer like outfit vibe.
- 1:12:17Yeah, his wardrobe is impeccable.
- 1:12:20Yeah, it is his. His is the most memorable in the
- 1:12:22movie. I mean, he's the main.
- 1:12:23Character but even more like usually you notice the the
- 1:12:26women's wardrobe more but his not even brought him close.
- 1:12:29It's it's all about the mob guys.
- 1:12:30Yeah, he's his wardrobes. More memorable than Karens?
- 1:12:34I found this out. You know, just.
- 1:12:36Recently when I knew we were doing the podcast, so the real
- 1:12:40Henry Hill was on the Howard Stern Radio show This Going to
- 1:12:45Disturb and a girl called into the show.
- 1:12:48A bunch of people called in but a girl called in and was very
- 1:12:52upset on the call and asked the real Henry Hill where the real
- 1:13:00spider was buried. The person who called was the
- 1:13:04real spiders sister Henry. Hill kind of shrugged.
- 1:13:12And didn't answer and then they had to hang up the call.
- 1:13:16He should have told her. That's fucking disturbing.
- 1:13:19He should have told. Her how he was already in
- 1:13:21witness protection. Yeah, just tell her that's
- 1:13:24crazy, huh? He was out of witness protection
- 1:13:27by then. Everybody was basically dead and
- 1:13:30also he was kicked out at one point because he was just too
- 1:13:33much. That's really sad.
- 1:13:36Polly and Henry both speak. Vaguely about the.
- 1:13:38Whereabouts of Billy? Bats when they're having that
- 1:13:40conversation after they kill Billy Bats, Holly's obviously
- 1:13:45fishing to see if Henry knows what Pollys talking about.
- 1:13:48But that whole scene, it's like, it's almost like it's, it's,
- 1:13:52it's something out of a scary movie because they're both being
- 1:13:56vague. He's like, did you talk to the
- 1:13:59guy about the thing? He's like, oh, the guy in
- 1:14:01Brooklyn. No, the guy with the other
- 1:14:02thing. Oh, the guy who used to live by
- 1:14:04Christie's house? No, the other guy, the guy from
- 1:14:07downtown. Oh, that guy.
- 1:14:10Like, it's just back. Yeah.
- 1:14:11It's kind of silly interrogation technique police use.
- 1:14:14That too. But that scene, the way they did
- 1:14:17it, it was just almost. Like the guy with the thing, You
- 1:14:19know the guy. Hey, you know the guy with the
- 1:14:22thing. Yeah.
- 1:14:23Police do that too though, because police a lot of times.
- 1:14:25Catch criminals by criminals knowing something they shouldn't
- 1:14:29know. They made fun of that in Analyze
- 1:14:30This, which stars Billy. Crystal and Robert De Niro,
- 1:14:33Yeah. He's like, you talk to the guy.
- 1:14:35Which guy? The guy with the thing, that guy
- 1:14:38with the thing, You know the guy, the guy I told you about
- 1:14:43and he's like, what the fuck is talking about?
- 1:14:44Is that a direct? Well, they do it a lot.
- 1:14:47In a lot of movies, I think, yeah.
- 1:14:48I think it might just be a mob. I'm still funny though.
- 1:14:51So I I want to. Question why Karen doesn't?
- 1:14:54Leave Henry because he's like so shitty to her and she's so
- 1:14:59unhappy. They're fighting about his
- 1:15:02cheating. They're fighting about him being
- 1:15:04away all the time. But she she does explain in the
- 1:15:07gun scene that she points the gun at his head.
- 1:15:10Yeah, she said. I I was still.
- 1:15:11Very attracted to him. And sometimes when you can't
- 1:15:14fully have someone, it makes you cling to them and want them even
- 1:15:18more. So it it, it's almost like
- 1:15:21because he was unfaithful, because he was gone all the time
- 1:15:24working, because she she didn't feel that she fully had him, it
- 1:15:27may have actually made her crave his attention even more.
- 1:15:30Well, she says I why should I let her win?
- 1:15:33You know, why should I lose? She doesn't want to lose.
- 1:15:36She doesn't want to lose him. Yeah, it's, I think it's also
- 1:15:39just someone. Just when?
- 1:15:41When? You're some women.
- 1:15:42Unfortunately, when they're not. Being treated well it it almost
- 1:15:45divorcing hard, not animal. Never gonna divorce, I should.
- 1:15:51Kill. You.
- 1:15:51But you'll never divorce you. Yeah.
- 1:15:54Well, I just I. I just I thought it.
- 1:15:56Was interesting because she doesn't.
- 1:15:57Leave him. And she's clearly unhappy he's
- 1:15:59in prison. Like, yeah, she could leave him,
- 1:16:02but she never does. Well, I mean, what is she gonna
- 1:16:04do? She has nothing.
- 1:16:06He's the the breadwinner. It's not like she's working.
- 1:16:09Yeah, but she's already having to survive with her two kids
- 1:16:12Leave. Town go somewhere else yeah I
- 1:16:14guess you know get away from him but she she.
- 1:16:17She never loves him. She.
- 1:16:18Loves him and those are her kids dad.
- 1:16:20Yeah, and she loves the life. She gets seduced into it.
- 1:16:23Right. She knows.
- 1:16:24She's not stupid. You don't feel like you're in
- 1:16:27construction. 21 year old with such connections.
- 1:16:30She knows. She knows.
- 1:16:32She knows immediately that something is up.
- 1:16:34No, no, no. She, she, she knows.
- 1:16:36But she. Yeah.
- 1:16:36And then? He finds out pretty quickly when
- 1:16:38he hands her. Gun and she's like, I'm sticking
- 1:16:41around. Yeah, it turned me on.
- 1:16:48What else you got? So just my last thing.
- 1:16:51Is. After Tommy dies, Jimmy becomes
- 1:16:55a full on villain. Yeah.
- 1:16:58And it's, you see this shift in him almost immediately.
- 1:17:03It's. Yeah.
- 1:17:04Yeah. You think you just.
- 1:17:05Tommy was his best friend. He cared a lot a lot about.
- 1:17:08Tommy and he's. Just he gets disenchanted with
- 1:17:10the life after that happens because that was supposed to be
- 1:17:13their ticket. That scene that where we finds
- 1:17:15out Tommy gets shot, holy shit. Yeah, and also how does Tommy?
- 1:17:20Know he's gonna die, he says, Oh no, right before I get shot in
- 1:17:24the head. So he knows he's dead.
- 1:17:25How does he know when you get, when you become a made?
- 1:17:29Guy basically, I mean, you have to go.
- 1:17:33So you go, they, they go to this house and basically you're
- 1:17:35gifted this house because you're part of the crew now.
- 1:17:39And then when you go there, there's a bunch of other maid
- 1:17:42guys and there's a ceremony. But when he opens the door,
- 1:17:46nobody's there and they show a ceremony like that.
- 1:17:51In Sopranos, don't they? With Christopher, basically they
- 1:17:54they they make a. They take an oath, and he was
- 1:17:57gonna take the oath, but nobody was there.
- 1:17:59And that's when he knew something.
- 1:18:00He knew. Yeah.
- 1:18:01He knew he was dead. It's crazy.
- 1:18:03Yeah. That's all I.
- 1:18:06Have for shower thoughts. That all of yours.
- 1:18:07No, I got a few. More here.
- 1:18:09So when Polly. Slicing the garlic when they're
- 1:18:11in prison, which is a great scene.
- 1:18:13I love that cooking in prison and stuff.
- 1:18:15But when you sliced the garlic. With a razor.
- 1:18:18This is basically apparently it's Scorsese doing character
- 1:18:26storytelling. I never realized this, but I did
- 1:18:30a little research and basically it's it holds a deeper meaning.
- 1:18:34Basically, it's showing that Polly is showing his power.
- 1:18:39And his. Meticulous control over the mob
- 1:18:45because he's sitting there and it's all about control.
- 1:18:48He's got a thin razor, he's slicing and he's slicing and
- 1:18:51he's slicing. There's also this other theory
- 1:18:54that the mob is, it's all smoke and mirrors.
- 1:18:59So everything's happening beyond behind the scenes, right?
- 1:19:04With the mob, they still trucks, they do this, they do that.
- 1:19:06All this crime and people don't see it day-to-day people, they
- 1:19:10don't see it. They go to work, it's happening
- 1:19:12under their noses, right? And when Henry's talking about,
- 1:19:17he used to slice the garlic so thin that he used to liquify in
- 1:19:20the pan. So that sliced garlic is, I
- 1:19:26guess, symbolism for the mob. How it's liquefied in the pan,
- 1:19:31you don't know what's there, right?
- 1:19:34But it's there and it's happening under your nose, so.
- 1:19:38There's two things happening. There and it's characters,
- 1:19:41storytelling, storytelling on Paul's part, and then also what
- 1:19:45the mob is. And they're literally in prison.
- 1:19:48The other prisoners don't know what's going on, but those guys
- 1:19:51have it made. They have like a little hotel in
- 1:19:54the prison, right? It's happening right under their
- 1:19:55noses. That's that's pretty deep
- 1:19:58inspection. Based on just Poly chopping
- 1:20:01something with the oh I think every time I see that scene as
- 1:20:04somebody who cooks with garlic a lot is.
- 1:20:06That that would take forever. Yeah, just use a garlic press.
- 1:20:10But for him, it's about control, right?
- 1:20:13So unintentional comedy. OK, this, this part, they kill
- 1:20:19Mori and they're like, let's go chop them up.
- 1:20:22And then Frankie Carbone's like, he's like, what, you wanna start
- 1:20:26the car? He's like, so Tommy's like drive
- 1:20:28off, like get out of here. And he's like, I got a better
- 1:20:32shot. And letting this fucking guy
- 1:20:33drive after he kills more, he's pointing at Maury.
- 1:20:36Like, I'll let Maury drive. And then Frankie Carbone's like,
- 1:20:40I want to warm up the car. And he's like, get the fuck out
- 1:20:43of here, Watch, warm it up, get out of here.
- 1:20:46Like, come on. Like we just had to kill the
- 1:20:47guy. You're gonna fucking sit here
- 1:20:49and let the car warm up? Yeah.
- 1:20:50Tommy's like, in a rush to leave.
- 1:20:52It seems risky. Also, this scene.
- 1:20:55Little dark, little dark joke. So Maury gets stabbed with a
- 1:21:00fucking ice pick in the back of his neck.
- 1:21:02So Bell never got her Danish cause he said he's gonna.
- 1:21:08Pick up a Danish for belt. Cause they were gonna go to the
- 1:21:11coffee shop. Sad.
- 1:21:13It's fucked up, I know. And all you hear is the last
- 1:21:18thing you you hear more you say is it was terrific Nunzio up in
- 1:21:23the that's all you. Hear.
- 1:21:27That's the last thing that Mori says.
- 1:21:30It's fucked up, OK, I don't. Know the sound.
- 1:21:38Yeah, you can speak at the. Back of the throat.
- 1:21:40You're twisted. He's getting killed, dude.
- 1:21:42I know, I know. It's dark, but it's.
- 1:21:45You know, it's just a little bit funny.
- 1:21:47She never got her. Poor Belle.
- 1:21:51It's kind of weird that Tommy. 'S mom is just like.
- 1:21:54OK with her son being in the mafia, like she literally
- 1:21:57congratulates him for getting becoming a maid guy.
- 1:22:01I think she just loves her son. I don't think she cares what he
- 1:22:03does. Yeah.
- 1:22:04But it's, it's a little, I mean, she knows she's not dumb.
- 1:22:07She shouldn't congratulate him. That's kind of yeah.
- 1:22:10And that's. Scorsese mom playing Tommy's
- 1:22:12mom. Oh yeah, it is.
- 1:22:13Yeah, yeah. She's the one.
- 1:22:17Who drew the picture? One dog was going this way and
- 1:22:19the other was gone. That way and this guy is saying,
- 1:22:21what do you want from me? The the the Niro payphone.
- 1:22:26Scene is so. Good and acting and filmmaking.
- 1:22:29Like when he's talking and the guy's telling him the Tommy,
- 1:22:32he's he's gone. He's gone the cameras, like,
- 1:22:35wide shot. And then as soon as he finds out
- 1:22:37that Tommy's dead, he the camera zooms in and then he starts
- 1:22:42smashing the frigging receiver into the payphone.
- 1:22:46Like, it's such good acting. And then the, like, weird cry.
- 1:22:50Yeah, the fury and the sobbing and angry cry.
- 1:22:53Scene It's it's it's. Excellent.
- 1:22:56Acting the cocaine morning scene.
- 1:22:59Basically, the paranoia is palpable.
- 1:23:01And also, the doctor in the hospital is from The Wire, It's
- 1:23:06Isaiah Whitlock. He's the guy that got.
- 1:23:08Him, she just died December last year.
- 1:23:13Yeah, no, just died at the end of 2025.
- 1:23:15So RIP. But imagine he's just taking
- 1:23:18Henry's blood pressure. He's like, let me take let me
- 1:23:20take a look at you, take his blood pressure she.
- 1:23:25That's no he. He gives some Valium, he gets
- 1:23:27him more high. Known for that.
- 1:23:29Line. He's used that line in other
- 1:23:31shows and other. Movies.
- 1:23:32OHS really. Yeah.
- 1:23:33That's like Arnold going in other.
- 1:23:35Movies just. I'll be back.
- 1:23:37So at the end of the movie, Jimmy tells Karen that he's got
- 1:23:40these beautiful Dior dresses that she wants, if she wants it,
- 1:23:45like they're hers. And basically he points, he's
- 1:23:49working, he's bought a bunch of properties and he's, he's is
- 1:23:53going through them all. Cause I guess there's, you know,
- 1:23:56goods that were left in there because they're abandoned
- 1:23:58buildings. But he tells her that he's got
- 1:24:01these beautiful Dior dresses and he points her down the road and
- 1:24:05says, you just go into that building there.
- 1:24:07So she's already a little paranoid because, you know,
- 1:24:10they're in big trouble with the police and Henry's paranoid
- 1:24:13because they're both coked up. So do you think he you know they
- 1:24:16were cleaned by then? Oh, that's true.
- 1:24:20She was. Do you think that he was?
- 1:24:22Going to kill her in that scene or do you think she.
- 1:24:24Was just being paranoid so my theory is that he wasn't going.
- 1:24:28To kill her. I think that Jimmy was testing
- 1:24:31her to see how scared they are because the more scared you are,
- 1:24:38the more likely you are to go to the police and flip.
- 1:24:42So when he points down there, I don't think there's any dresses,
- 1:24:47I don't think. There's any?
- 1:24:48Danger. I think there's just two grunts
- 1:24:52working in that building, and he's testing to see if she
- 1:24:57trusts him anymore because and she didn't.
- 1:25:01She's like, I have to go. I have to pick up the kids.
- 1:25:03And that's when the next scene is Jimmy telling him you need to
- 1:25:07go down to Florida to do something.
- 1:25:09And then Henry's, like I knew then that I wouldn't come back
- 1:25:13alive. Can I just say though, as a As
- 1:25:17a? Woman.
- 1:25:18Yeah, looking into that shadowy alley.
- 1:25:21And seeing men. In their moving boxes around and
- 1:25:23like how dark it is. I don't care if I trust Jimmy or
- 1:25:28not. I'm not going in there for my
- 1:25:29own safety. Yeah, I don't care what's in
- 1:25:32there that I see. Those really could have.
- 1:25:33I've walked down alleys were had creepy people and.
- 1:25:37Weird people in buildings. And I'm just, I book it.
- 1:25:40Yeah, but as a woman, that's not the thing.
- 1:25:42As a man. Yeah, as a woman, I specifically
- 1:25:45as a woman, that's, that's scary.
- 1:25:47That's a. Scary situation to put.
- 1:25:48Yourself in and any woman would have a brain is be like I'm not
- 1:25:50going I don't know who those guys doesn't think they they
- 1:25:53were tight right he like they they.
- 1:25:55Did everything together, they want vacations together.
- 1:25:57So he should have walked her down there then cause he's
- 1:25:59obviously a scary. Alley, he's testing the.
- 1:26:02Trust level, right? I also.
- 1:26:04Really, really little subtle hints there.
- 1:26:08When she says I have to drop the kids off, she's walking to the
- 1:26:12car and the the scene is a wide shot now that shows her walking
- 1:26:15to the car and it's zooming out and you see the street light and
- 1:26:19it says don't walk and then. Right underneath the Don't Walk
- 1:26:25sign, there's a. One way sign pointing towards
- 1:26:28where Jimmy was pointing. Like one way, like you're not
- 1:26:32coming out of there OK, You're. You're reading too.
- 1:26:35Indeed, too in depth it does some of this.
- 1:26:37Stuff details that Scorsese puts the don't walk, she stopped.
- 1:26:41Walking like it's it's telling the audience there was danger.
- 1:26:46So I have a hot take here. When we're on the talk of the.
- 1:26:49Topic of this every time that Henry.
- 1:26:54Gets in trouble. As an adult, it's because of a
- 1:26:57woman. I think women are his Achilles
- 1:27:00heel. So number one, his gumar becomes
- 1:27:06trouble and Polly tells him to go to Florida with Jimmy to take
- 1:27:09care of some stuff. He gets busted, goes to jail #2
- 1:27:15him and his. Gumar get busted?
- 1:27:18OK, the second Kumar, as she has bowls full of cocaine from their
- 1:27:22little lab that they made in an apartment and he's told her to
- 1:27:27use the dishwasher, clean this mess up.
- 1:27:30You know what, They could put us away forever if they ever catch
- 1:27:33us with this. And what happens?
- 1:27:35They catch them, they get all the dishes and everything's full
- 1:27:38of coke #3 his mule who you hate, the girl who flies the
- 1:27:45drugs in and out. Then the babysitter.
- 1:27:47The babysitter. The one who needs.
- 1:27:49Her lucky hat. Makes the call from inside the
- 1:27:52house when he explicitly told her to use an outside phone
- 1:27:56number 4. Karen gets scared of Jimmy
- 1:28:00because the Dior thing goes home crying.
- 1:28:04Henry is immediately threatened by Jimmy the next scene.
- 1:28:08He knows he's gonna get whacked if he sticks around.
- 1:28:11Before that he was paranoid, but he wasn't scared for his life
- 1:28:15because he saw Polly and Polly's like, here's some cash.
- 1:28:19You know, you're broke that, but that's it.
- 1:28:21I gotta turn my back on you because there's too much heat.
- 1:28:23I'm just saying there's a lot of instances with Henry that he's
- 1:28:28made some bad choices, but also those choices have been
- 1:28:31amplified by and he even says in the movie, every woman in my
- 1:28:35life, he's like the driving me crazy.
- 1:28:37That is an incredibly misogynistic view.
- 1:28:40He's a mob. Fact of the movie bad things
- 1:28:43happen to him because he's a. Criminal and he's doing
- 1:28:45criminal. Acts.
- 1:28:46It's a fact of the movie. I'm not saying that those are
- 1:28:49the people I'm. Just telling you facts.
- 1:28:51Every time he gets in major trouble, the the scene before is
- 1:28:56something happens with a woman in his life.
- 1:28:59Maybe the director and the writers are misogynists.
- 1:29:02Not me, bro. I'm just sitting here chilling
- 1:29:05and talking on a podcast. I'm just observing.
- 1:29:07Yeah, I'm observing the facts. Alright.
- 1:29:13Also, Lorraine. Bracco just a shout out.
- 1:29:15Nobody. Mentions her enough OHS she's
- 1:29:18amazing. She's so beautiful in this.
- 1:29:20She's so. Captivating.
- 1:29:21She didn't make sense to me. She's also kind of annoying,
- 1:29:24but. In in a good way.
- 1:29:27Does this movie hit different as a parent?
- 1:29:29Yes, the scene where Karen and Henry are.
- 1:29:32Fighting, yeah, and it shows. Their young daughters terrified
- 1:29:35face when he storms out is so sad.
- 1:29:39His kids in this movie are living amongst dysfunction and
- 1:29:43toxicity in their parents marriage.
- 1:29:46And we know from watching the movie that Henry is a bad
- 1:29:49husband, but he's also an abysmal father.
- 1:29:53Yeah, he's a he's a terrible father, but most of these mob
- 1:29:56guys would be. Yeah, but leaving Karen?
- 1:29:58Alone with the kids all the time.
- 1:30:00Obviously not helping out much with raising them.
- 1:30:03That sucks. And he admits Karen was always
- 1:30:06home with the kids when he's in Jenny in the Janice Rossi
- 1:30:10apartment scene. And his children obviously
- 1:30:13suffered from his poor life choices.
- 1:30:15They didn't have a father for several years when he was in
- 1:30:17prison and he obviously is not showing up the way a dad could.
- 1:30:24I mean, this is discussed a lot that sure, millennial dads are
- 1:30:28breaking all kinds of generational curses because
- 1:30:31previous generations were not as involved and you called me a
- 1:30:34misogynist. How dare on Valentine's Day.
- 1:30:38Fall days. Shame.
- 1:30:40Shame, shame. Shame.
- 1:30:40Shame. Shame, Shame, shame, shame.
- 1:30:41But but, but beyond even. That trope of you know.
- 1:30:44Gen. X and baby boomer dads being
- 1:30:46less involved, like he's just he's, he's a bad dad.
- 1:30:52We see a lot of innocence. In young Henry at the beginning.
- 1:30:56Of the movie as well and all of these men just.
- 1:30:59Corrupt. Him.
- 1:31:01Yep. In the court scene he's crying
- 1:31:04because he's upset that he got pinched and they're
- 1:31:07congratulating him for for committing a crime.
- 1:31:10As a mother I feel protective over young Henry.
- 1:31:14He really gets taken in by the mob and destroyed.
- 1:31:18It's the money. It's the flash he gets to
- 1:31:20deduced he gets. Seduced by by the money by the
- 1:31:22flash by. Seeing these men that he
- 1:31:26idolizes, all summer song they played, park they played cards
- 1:31:29all night nobody called. The cops, Yeah.
- 1:31:31As a kid, of course you're gonna be intrigued by that.
- 1:31:33Of course you're gonna. Want to get in on that because
- 1:31:35it seems like such and you know, such an amazing life, but he
- 1:31:39really does learn the dark side of it.
- 1:31:43And also Karen having to leave her parents at the end of the
- 1:31:47movie hits hard. And for me, that's not as a
- 1:31:49mother, but as a daughter. I could never leave my parents
- 1:31:53knowing I would never be able to talk to them or see them again.
- 1:31:56That would be that would be such a heartbreaking thing to have to
- 1:31:58do. And having a good relationship
- 1:32:01with your parents as an adult is like the spice of life.
- 1:32:05She made that. I mean, she made that choice.
- 1:32:07She's like I. Know what this guy's about?
- 1:32:09But you know, I agree. She's saying she's paying for
- 1:32:12her bad choices. But for me, like just think you
- 1:32:16put you, you automatically put yourself in that situation.
- 1:32:18One awful thing to have to do the the this movie does hit
- 1:32:22different, as apparent when I watched it.
- 1:32:23Younger, the kill scenes, everything was like, oh, this is
- 1:32:26so cool. My God, the swearing and stuff.
- 1:32:29And then you get older and you're watching it.
- 1:32:32You're like, wow, I have kids now.
- 1:32:34I hope my kid doesn't hang out with the wrong crowd one day and
- 1:32:38then doesn't go to school for a month.
- 1:32:41Like that's crazy. A month smacks the hell out of
- 1:32:45him with a belt. Yeah.
- 1:32:47Not not to talk shit about Henry's family or anything.
- 1:32:50But yeah, if you have a very involved happy home life, you
- 1:32:54usually that doesn't happen. Well, they didn't say that Happy
- 1:32:57House wasn't happy, but. There's a big family and the dad
- 1:33:01worked a lot. So like, it was just, you know,
- 1:33:04when you're struggling to just survive.
- 1:33:08Yeah. They were really poor.
- 1:33:10You don't have time. To, you know, like families
- 1:33:13like. Farmers like people just have a
- 1:33:15bunch of kids and they would take care of the farm and there
- 1:33:18was none of this like, oh, my kid has anxiety my, this that,
- 1:33:22you know, like that's a real issue that people have.
- 1:33:24Don't get me wrong. But nobody had time for, you
- 1:33:27know, mental health. Nobody had time for it before.
- 1:33:30Everybody was just trying to Also if you were to grow up so
- 1:33:33poor that you're not. Even having your basic needs
- 1:33:35met, of course, like a job, the cab stand where they're giving
- 1:33:38you fistfuls of money is appealing because you can
- 1:33:41finally afford some of the luxuries, more money than most
- 1:33:44of the adults in the neighborhood.
- 1:33:45Yeah, he said he had. More money than he could spend
- 1:33:47and like if you grow. Up very poor and like I said,
- 1:33:50your needs aren't being met. Of course that's going to draw
- 1:33:53you in. For me, the the part that.
- 1:33:56Really did me in. In this movie, as a parent, is
- 1:33:59the prison scene, the prison visitation that was really
- 1:34:03upsetting when he's. Holding his little daughter and.
- 1:34:05She's got a pacifier and she's crying and Karen's yelling at
- 1:34:09him and throwing food and like cold cuts and cheese and like
- 1:34:15takes a bottle of wine. She has that like, her jacket
- 1:34:18made me laugh. It's like the jacket from The
- 1:34:20Simpsons episode when they go to the candy convention and Marge
- 1:34:23is just like stuffed with candy. It was last.
- 1:34:27There's a whole baguette. She.
- 1:34:28Rips a baguette. 1st. Get in there like a.
- 1:34:31Magic trick and her kids. Crying and he's like.
- 1:34:34Stop it. Stop it like you're making her
- 1:34:36cry. I would never.
- 1:34:39I don't even know what I would do if all I could do was see my
- 1:34:42kids for 20 minutes a week. That's crazy.
- 1:34:46Those visitations are short. Well, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:34:48Like his his poor, his poor life.
- 1:34:50Choices made him such a worse father.
- 1:34:53No I know couldn't even be there for them.
- 1:34:55I mean, he wasn't making those choices as a dad it.
- 1:34:58Was he was making those choices beforehand and he ended up
- 1:35:01becoming a dad? But yeah, this movie does hit
- 1:35:04different. As a parent.
- 1:35:05It's still really enjoyable, still a lot of fun, still a
- 1:35:08roller coaster ride, amazing acting.
- 1:35:12But, you know, watching Spider get killed, watching these young
- 1:35:16people, you know, the kids, the parents going to jail, police
- 1:35:20showing up, all this stuff like witness protection, like you
- 1:35:24don't get to see your grandparents anymore.
- 1:35:26You have to go just uproot your whole life because your dad was
- 1:35:29a fucking shithead. Yeah, being a parent really
- 1:35:32makes watching. Anything a more complex
- 1:35:35situation yeah. Like if if we start a movie and
- 1:35:38there's anything about children early on in the movie that
- 1:35:41upsets us, we will turn it off now.
- 1:35:44And that never used to be the case.
- 1:35:45Like your heart gets softer when you become a parent.
- 1:35:48It's true. Your heart gets softer and it's.
- 1:35:50Weird. Your heart gets softer and when
- 1:35:55you have a newborn, the baby scenes in movies bother you.
- 1:35:58When you have a toddler, the toddler scenes mess you up.
- 1:36:02But when you have a baby, the toddler scenes don't bother you.
- 1:36:05And it's vice versa. You get sensitive for the level
- 1:36:10that your child is at at that time.
- 1:36:13In my opinion, I disagree anything of all.
- 1:36:17But when your kids get older, you're.
- 1:36:18Able to stomach some of the scenes in movies but when your
- 1:36:23kid is the age or close to the age of the character in the
- 1:36:26movie and they're going through some turmoil like when they're
- 1:36:29fighting and the little girls looking out the door and her mom
- 1:36:32screaming at her dad, yeah, she's just always staying out
- 1:36:37yeah. It's.
- 1:36:37Just really heartbreaking. It is also when the kids see.
- 1:36:43Dead Johnny roast beef. I when I first watched that, I
- 1:36:49was like, did those kids do that?
- 1:36:52I didn't understand. But now I'm watching it and I'm
- 1:36:54like, those poor kids like that. They're traumatized for life.
- 1:36:58Yeah, that's trauma, man. Like seeing that?
- 1:37:00They're gonna be going to college.
- 1:37:02Sitting on somebody's dorm room floor.
- 1:37:04Drinking a bottle of alcohol and being like yo when I was 6 me
- 1:37:08and my friends were playing soccer and we saw some guy and
- 1:37:11his wife in a pink car and they had been murdered.
- 1:37:15Well, because seared into their brains grabbers mother's.
- 1:37:18Name it was. Under his mother's name.
- 1:37:20Oh yeah, it wasn't his. Car It was under his mother's
- 1:37:21name. Was a wedding gift for my
- 1:37:23mother. Don't buy.
- 1:37:25Anything. Also, this movie is a Christmas
- 1:37:27movie. Yeah, according to you know,
- 1:37:31I've confirmed. This with your.
- 1:37:32Brother, because there's multiple.
- 1:37:33Christmas scenes in it. Yeah, and.
- 1:37:36Probably the worst Christmas tree.
- 1:37:37Another. Side note, Joe Pesci wins Best
- 1:37:40Actor, Best Supporting Actor for this movie and within less than
- 1:37:45a year, a few months before he did Home Alone, which is such an
- 1:37:49iconic movie, this guy. Banged out two movies within 6.
- 1:37:53Months and there are two of the most iconic films in history and
- 1:37:59they're completely different genres and these both isn't in
- 1:38:02both of them both are being watched day-to-day.
- 1:38:06One of them is religiously. Watched every.
- 1:38:08Holiday We will do a home alone episode during the holiday
- 1:38:11season for. Sure.
- 1:38:12You know Joe Pesci, he's. Low key the goat.
- 1:38:16He's one of the goats, so I agree.
- 1:38:19What do you rate this movie So? How?
- 1:38:22Many shine boxes out of 10. Are you giving this movie?
- 1:38:27I give this 9 Go home and. Get your fucking shine.
- 1:38:30Boxes out of 10/9 out of 10/9 out of 10.
- 1:38:33It's it's really good. But I I did note.
- 1:38:34Some of the things in the. Movie that bother me and that I
- 1:38:36think make it less than perfect so I can't give it a 10 out of
- 1:38:4010 so I give this it's really so I'm being.
- 1:38:44Very critical of this movie because it's Scorsese and it's
- 1:38:48because it's my favorite and I've seen it so many times I've
- 1:38:51dissected it. I give it a 9.8.
- 1:38:55I'm going into the decimals for this one.
- 1:38:57It's not perfect. Wait, wait.
- 1:38:59But 9.8 watts, 9.8 shine? Boxes out of 10.
- 1:39:05This movie is. Just everything about.
- 1:39:08It is amazing. I could watch it over and over
- 1:39:10and over, but I just wish that. Scorsese.
- 1:39:16Would pull a James Cameron. And just take this.
- 1:39:18Movie back and just fix a couple of things, like a couple of the
- 1:39:22edits. James Cameron has done it with a
- 1:39:26few movies. I know that.
- 1:39:29What's his name? He's done it.
- 1:39:31Who's the guy? That George Lucas?
- 1:39:33George Lucas has done it with Star Wars and ruined Star Wars.
- 1:39:35George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are notorious for
- 1:39:38doing this. But James Cameron's done it and.
- 1:39:41He's done it well, and he's, like, made it better.
- 1:39:44Yeah, but maybe Scorsese's like, worst.
- 1:39:47Case scenario, I make it worse and I can't stomach that.
- 1:39:50So maybe he just doesn't want to touch it.
