- 1:40Speaker 1: It is Wednesday, it is hump Day. It is Wellness
- 1:44Speaker 1: Wednesday with Washington County Mental Health. Starting at four point
- 1:48Speaker 1: thirty this afternoon. We're going to talk about it more
- 1:50Speaker 1: inside the community calendar a little bit later this morning.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Right here on aired out where you are right now,
- 1:59Speaker 1: very good morning, about twenty seven degrees, some light snow
- 2:03Speaker 1: that is falling here in central Vermon We're looking at
- 2:08Speaker 1: around thirty today with mostly cloudy skies. I think that
- 2:12Speaker 1: snowfall that we had last night is pretty much all
- 2:15Speaker 1: said and done, with maybe another dusting or so, don't
- 2:19Speaker 1: you know, hold me to it. Look, Jadie, wake another
- 2:21Speaker 1: half inch last night. It's possible there could be some
- 2:26Speaker 1: residual snowfall today. Drive carefully, I think that kind of
- 2:31Speaker 1: goes without saying, just be careful out there. Tomorrow we're
- 2:35Speaker 1: looking at kind of an uneventful forecast, cloudy skies, almost
- 2:41Speaker 1: a carbon copy of what we have today, with you know,
- 2:46Speaker 1: some clouds and some light snow showers. It is Sweethearts
- 2:50Speaker 1: and Heroes Day today, and we're gonna be chatting with
- 2:54Speaker 1: yet again another superhero in just a minute. But speaking
- 2:58Speaker 1: of superheroes, Deb Phillips over at the World with us
- 3:02Speaker 1: this morning. Deb, Good morning, Good morning j d Oh,
- 3:05Speaker 1: yes you are a superhero. Oh thanks, we think so.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Anyway over here it aired out. How are you, Deb Phillips?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh, doing well? Doing well today?
- 3:16Speaker 1: What do we expect in today's world newspaper that's coming out?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Well?
- 3:22Speaker 2: As you know, I mean, Valentine's Day is only a
- 3:25Speaker 2: couple more days away. We have lots of really good
- 3:29Speaker 2: local gift ideas for that last minute shopper for Valentine's Day.
- 3:35Speaker 2: We also have a ton of other great events and
- 3:41Speaker 2: stuff going on. Last week, you know, we talked about
- 3:45Speaker 2: Farmers Farmers Night. You know that's again tonight, and I'm.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Trying to remember everything. I didn't bring my notes with me.
- 3:56Speaker 1: No, I'm just looking to here. February eleventh, David Wilson
- 4:01Speaker 1: Memorial Concert with the Vermont Symphony, Orchestra and Chorus. So
- 4:06Speaker 1: I mean, come on, you're gonna get a free ticket.

- 4:25Speaker 2: my favorite pages that we do is the adopt a
- 4:28Speaker 2: Pet page. We have eighteen pets looking for their forever home.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Very important Central Vermont Humane Society.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Right, yes, yes, cats, dogs, bunnies. Yeah, yeah, one bunny's.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Name bun Jovi.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh my, I love it, I love it, I love it.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 1: You guys have so much packed in the paper. You're gonna,
- 4:53Speaker 1: as I say, every almost every Wednesday, allow yourself some
- 4:56Speaker 1: time to thumb through it today. It comes out as
- 4:59Speaker 1: a matter of fact. It's on the move right now, Deb,
- 5:02Speaker 1: right right now, yes, all right, always love having a
- 5:07Speaker 1: glance of the world. Some great articles in there. It
- 5:09Speaker 1: is just chuck packed with plenty of stuff.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Yes, it is definitely so.
- 5:16Speaker 1: All right. Well, listen, big tip of the hat to
- 5:18Speaker 1: you and Gary and the rest of the team over there.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Saw Gary the other night at the legislative banquet at
- 5:24Speaker 1: the Capitol Plaza. What a great guy serving up the pizza.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Oh yeah he was, he said, it was a big hit.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sure. Well listen, Deb, we're gonna chat with
- 5:34Speaker 1: you next Wednesday. But I can't wait to get my world.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Chris is on his way. I know he'll be delivering
- 5:39Speaker 1: it here shortly. Yes, you will, thank you. Ever so much.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 5:43Speaker 1: JD. Yeah. One of our presenting sponsors, the World Newspaper,
- 5:48Speaker 1: which has been around for what fifty three years something
- 5:51Speaker 1: like that. It's a long time. I have a guy
- 5:54Speaker 1: who is standing by with me right now that I
- 5:57Speaker 1: cannot wait to introduce to you. And on Wednesdays we
- 6:02Speaker 1: talked Sweethearts and Heroes. We talk about people that are
- 6:05Speaker 1: making affecting real change in our communities everywhere, not just
- 6:12Speaker 1: here in Central Vermont, but all over the region. And
- 6:16Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Heroes has just the wave of positivity from
- 6:22Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Heroes that has swept into so many schools
- 6:27Speaker 1: and changed things drastically. Eric Bizetto is the physical education
- 6:36Speaker 1: teacher over at the JFK Elementary School. Do I have
- 6:39Speaker 1: that right, my friend?
- 6:41Speaker 4: Yes, you do.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Tell me about you a little bit. I was doing
- 6:47Speaker 1: some homework on you last night and the stuff that
- 6:50Speaker 1: was popping out in a Google search was crazy. There
- 6:53Speaker 1: was so much of it.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Oh boy. So I've been a.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Fin's that teacher for twenty three years now in bruce To,
- 7:05Speaker 3: New York. It's It's something I've always wanted to do.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I'm very passionate about it. I absolutely love my job.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I teach a K through five. Right now, I've been teaching.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I taught middle.
- 7:20Speaker 4: School, I got high school, so I bought at every
- 7:22Speaker 4: single level.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Now the elementary school is definitely my passion. I coached
- 7:29Speaker 3: basketball for twenty years. Soccer I love the coach, but
- 7:34Speaker 3: once I had my kids.
- 7:36Speaker 4: I have three wonderful kids.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I have a daughter and two sons, and I asked
- 7:42Speaker 3: them every season to mind his dad coaches.
- 7:45Speaker 4: They always said yes.
- 7:46Speaker 3: One year they said no, and that's the year I
- 7:50Speaker 3: stopped coaching.
- 7:52Speaker 4: To me, your family comes first.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So once they said no, they want to go at home,
- 7:57Speaker 3: then the dad's gonna be home.
- 7:58Speaker 1: More so, how many kids in your school? About?
- 8:02Speaker 3: If you had to guess, in the K two building
- 8:06Speaker 3: was probably a middle over six hundred.
- 8:10Speaker 1: That's unbelievable. Man. You know, I was thinking last night
- 8:16Speaker 1: how old I am and at fifty five, I remember
- 8:24Speaker 1: my gym teacher so well from elementary school. Little did
- 8:30Speaker 1: I know, you know, being that age that I would
- 8:36Speaker 1: be going through the next forty plus years of my
- 8:41Speaker 1: life and never forgetting my gym teacher and the impact
- 8:49Speaker 1: that he had on me. And I was sitting there
- 8:52Speaker 1: last night and I was reading up on you, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: I was just reflecting on my own life, and I'm like,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I remember that huge track and field event. It was
- 9:12Speaker 1: we were going for state championship, and I was my
- 9:19Speaker 1: ankle caught that second from last hurdle I think it was,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and I went down and I was devastated. Man. I mean,
- 9:32Speaker 1: I want to guess I was probably maybe twelve, thirteen,
- 9:38Speaker 1: fourteen years old, and if it wasn't for that gym
- 9:43Speaker 1: teacher and what he said to me afterwards, I don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: know that I would have been anywhere near as okay
- 9:54Speaker 1: as I was. That guy had a real, real, prolonged
- 10:00Speaker 1: impact on me. What do you think when you're you're
- 10:06Speaker 1: one guy and you got six hundred people in your
- 10:13Speaker 1: audience that most of which are probably going to remember
- 10:22Speaker 1: you for a very very long time. You are in
- 10:25Speaker 1: a very bright spotlight, my friend, as in as all
- 10:29Speaker 1: administrators are, I think, but especially the gym teacher. Man.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's uh, it's been a pretty pretty weird career
- 10:40Speaker 3: for me. I mean, as when I started, I was
- 10:42Speaker 3: twenty two years old and I was teaching high school kids,
- 10:46Speaker 3: so I was teaching eighteen year olds.
- 10:48Speaker 4: So now later in my career, I'm teaching the K two.
- 10:51Speaker 3: So one of the one of the cool things for
- 10:54Speaker 3: me is now I'm teaching children of student that first had.
- 11:00Speaker 4: First couple of years of teaching.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So that's been a really cool full circle for me,
- 11:05Speaker 3: you know, in terms of you know, sort of the
- 11:10Speaker 3: impact that I might have on you know, my students' lives.
- 11:14Speaker 3: It you know, it definitely.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Goes both ways.
- 11:17Speaker 3: You know, they they have a huge impact on me,
- 11:20Speaker 3: and you know, I definitely feed off their energy as well.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I Mean, one of the biggest things for me too
- 11:26Speaker 3: is you know, I've been blessed with you know, amazing coworkers.
- 11:29Speaker 3: You know, my you know, I have you know, I've
- 11:32Speaker 3: had one colleague gen for the past I think eleven
- 11:35Speaker 3: or twelve years, and then we have a we have
- 11:38Speaker 3: a brand new teacher in now and and he's been amazing.
- 11:42Speaker 3: So having amazing coworkers really keeps your energy up. You know,
- 11:47Speaker 3: it's about today and you know, and the kids see
- 11:49Speaker 3: it too. But you know that when the kids come
- 11:52Speaker 3: into class and they see all the equipment out and
- 11:54Speaker 3: you know, and their eyes are you know, wide open,
- 11:56Speaker 3: you know you can't help it but just be you know,
- 11:59Speaker 3: super excited to hang out with them.
- 12:01Speaker 4: And teach them and trying to move into the future
- 12:04Speaker 4: a little bit. How old are you, Eric, I'm forty five.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So when you're you know, when you're way up there
- 12:13Speaker 1: in age, let's say, you know, eighty eighty five whatever,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you're realistically probably going to remember maybe a handful of
- 12:29Speaker 1: the six hundred students, maybe a little bit more, maybe
- 12:34Speaker 1: a little bit less. You might even remember one or
- 12:38Speaker 1: two and that's it. But of those six hundred students,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I'm guessing, and this would be just an assumption, I'm
- 12:48Speaker 1: guessing probably eighty percent of those students, maybe more, are
- 12:55Speaker 1: going to remember their gym teacher.
- 13:00Speaker 3: It's pretty amazing and it's it's you know it do.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You do you ever think about do you ever think
- 13:09Speaker 1: about that?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Uh?
- 13:11Speaker 4: Not until you just brought it up, To be honest
- 13:13Speaker 4: with you, it is.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It is pretty amazing to think about that. And now
- 13:19Speaker 3: that you're you know, now that you brought it up,
- 13:23Speaker 3: it's like it's it's one of those it's actually one
- 13:26Speaker 3: of the reasons why I became a you know, fidead
- 13:28Speaker 3: teacher as well. It's because I've had you know that,
- 13:32Speaker 3: that's you know, I had great people, you know, I
- 13:35Speaker 3: you know, I still talk to, you know, one.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Or two of them. The couple have you know, unfortunately
- 13:41Speaker 4: passed on.
- 13:42Speaker 3: But they've they've had a huge they've had a huge
- 13:45Speaker 3: impact in my life.
- 13:46Speaker 4: And it's the reason why, you know, I also went
- 13:49Speaker 4: to this field.
- 13:50Speaker 3: So yeah, you're absolutely right, you know, it is you know,
- 13:55Speaker 3: it is a humbling thing to hear. You know, it's
- 13:59Speaker 3: definitely a lot of responsibility, but it's you know, but
- 14:02Speaker 3: it's fun, you know.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I you know, it is my job per se, but
- 14:07Speaker 4: you know.
- 14:07Speaker 3: It's you know, it's something I just absolutely love to do, so.
- 14:10Speaker 4: I don't need to think of it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It's it's so much more than just physical education. It's
- 14:17Speaker 1: so much more than getting kids active and getting them
- 14:22Speaker 1: to move around and get in shape and learn about
- 14:27Speaker 1: healthy eating habits and making healthy choices. There's so much
- 14:32Speaker 1: more involved here. Yesterday, we took a very deep dive
- 14:38Speaker 1: into the subject of bullying on the air, and I
- 14:43Speaker 1: had some folks locally that share the microphone with me
- 14:48Speaker 1: on the couch, and we're very very transparent about some
- 14:58Speaker 1: local issues that we're having, and you know, it just
- 15:02Speaker 1: got me thinking. I mean, it's like it seems like
- 15:07Speaker 1: bullying is everywhere and at some level, there's going to
- 15:12Speaker 1: be bullying. I don't think that there's a school anywhere
- 15:15Speaker 1: in the world that is one hundred percent bully free,
- 15:19Speaker 1: even schools that Sweethearts and Heroes has gone into. And
- 15:24Speaker 1: like I said yesterday, I used the words flipped upside
- 15:29Speaker 1: out and made things drastically better. But I think to
- 15:36Speaker 1: some level, there's always going to be some form of
- 15:42Speaker 1: bullying somewhere. We're not always going to see it. We're
- 15:46Speaker 1: not always going to smell it as administrators, but it's happening,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and sometimes it's happening right in front of us, and
- 15:54Speaker 1: we don't even realize it. What do you do as
- 15:58Speaker 1: a gym teacher to have your eyes wide open to
- 16:01Speaker 1: this and to have the message that Sweethearts and Heroes
- 16:08Speaker 1: brings UH in your pocket as a gym teacher all
- 16:14Speaker 1: the time? What do you do to make sure that
- 16:17Speaker 1: that's being echoed all the time, even while there's while
- 16:22Speaker 1: there's play, while there's well, there's activities going on in
- 16:25Speaker 1: the gym.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Yeah, So I mean we you know, we have these,
- 16:29Speaker 3: you know, certain times throughout the day, you know, little
- 16:33Speaker 3: little half hour forty five minute blocks where I actually
- 16:36Speaker 3: go into the classroom and I talked about empathy, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 3: you know, and the sweethearts, you know, and here of message.
- 16:43Speaker 3: So they're we're getting it almost every day from us
- 16:47Speaker 3: as well. And then you know, throughout the class in
- 16:50Speaker 3: the gym, you know, if you know, I always have
- 16:54Speaker 3: groups and stuff, and I do allow them, even at
- 16:56Speaker 3: the young.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Age, to make their own groups.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And the more I go into the classroom and the
- 17:00Speaker 3: more I am talking about empathy and you know, helping
- 17:04Speaker 3: students out. If you know, if there's one kid left out,
- 17:09Speaker 3: it's only for a short amount of time now because
- 17:11Speaker 3: other kids are saying, hey, why do we come join
- 17:13Speaker 3: our group? You know, yo, hey guys, why don't we
- 17:16Speaker 3: go you know, go with that kid today or something
- 17:19Speaker 3: like that.
- 17:19Speaker 4: So it's been you know.
- 17:20Speaker 3: It's been pretty cool to see, even at the kindergarten level,
- 17:24Speaker 3: which is tough at that age, but we are, we
- 17:27Speaker 3: are seeing it, and it's been pretty amazing to say.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And you realize, as well as other administrators that the
- 17:37Speaker 1: responsibility of teaching, whether it's physical education, whether it's math, science,
- 17:43Speaker 1: social studies, English, whatever, that you're you're teaching things far
- 17:50Speaker 1: beyond that. You're teaching, as you said, empathy you're teaching sharing,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you're teaching things frankly that mom and dad may not
- 18:04Speaker 1: be teaching at home, and that responsibility is falling on
- 18:09Speaker 1: your shoulders.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's when you I mean looking at
- 18:15Speaker 3: you know, my own children and stuff. When you know,
- 18:18Speaker 3: when I leave at you know, eight o'clock in the
- 18:19Speaker 3: morning or something like that, and they're gone from the
- 18:22Speaker 3: eight to four, so you know, the majority of their
- 18:25Speaker 3: day is not with me and my wife. So it's
- 18:29Speaker 3: it's you know, I am trusting you know, their school
- 18:33Speaker 3: two to guide them in the right direction. So I
- 18:35Speaker 3: mean as a parent who does that as well, I
- 18:39Speaker 3: am definitely trusting them.
- 18:40Speaker 4: So I definitely understand, you know, when there's the six.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Hundred pairs of parents who are strucking their kids off
- 18:47Speaker 3: every day at my school, you know, I'm definitely, you know,
- 18:50Speaker 3: one of the people that you know they're going to
- 18:51Speaker 3: come to if they have a.
- 18:53Speaker 4: You know, if you have the problem or an issue.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And I mean definitely one of the biggest things at
- 18:57Speaker 3: the elementary level is every issue that they come to
- 19:02Speaker 3: is definitely a small issue in my mind, but it
- 19:04Speaker 3: could be a huge issue in their world right now.
- 19:07Speaker 3: So if someone you know, you stole their your favorite toy.
- 19:12Speaker 3: I'm like, all right, then go in a different toy.
- 19:13Speaker 3: But to them, that's their whole world. So we got
- 19:16Speaker 3: to talk about you know, you can't take things and
- 19:18Speaker 3: you got to take the turn and all that stuff. So,
- 19:20Speaker 3: you know, it's definitely.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Trying to.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You'll teach the kids that you know it. You know,
- 19:28Speaker 3: you may not think it's a huge issue, but you
- 19:30Speaker 3: know that person at that moment, it is a big deal,
- 19:33Speaker 3: and just how to deal.
- 19:34Speaker 4: With it properly.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, what perspective. How how did you hear about
- 19:41Speaker 1: the Sweethearts and Heroes program? How did you get introduced
- 19:46Speaker 1: to Tom Murphy and Ricky Irish and the rest of
- 19:48Speaker 1: the team.
- 19:50Speaker 3: So, uh, there was another guy, Jason, who I met first,
- 19:56Speaker 3: and it was that a it was that it It
- 20:00Speaker 3: was called the Southeastern Zone Conference. It's a huge bis
- 20:03Speaker 3: head conference that we hold on election day down here
- 20:07Speaker 3: in New York.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And you know, there was this big guy. He was
- 20:13Speaker 4: up in the front.
- 20:14Speaker 3: He was a keynote speaker, and every Ginot speaker we
- 20:17Speaker 3: have is kind of like all right, you know, you know,
- 20:21Speaker 3: kind of boring at times, and he kind of gets
- 20:24Speaker 3: up there the relas a daisical and you know, he's
- 20:27Speaker 3: wearing a pink shirt and like, all right whatever and
- 20:30Speaker 3: makes you know, he unbuttons the pick shirt. He's wearing
- 20:32Speaker 3: a dark black shirt.
- 20:35Speaker 4: It says three hugs underneath it, and I'm like, what
- 20:37Speaker 4: is going on right now?
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, he starts and then he starts juggling standing up
- 20:42Speaker 3: in the seat. Were like, what is this about? Like,
- 20:44Speaker 3: no idea, and he goes, so do I have your attention?
- 20:48Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, like h and he just starts talking
- 20:52Speaker 3: about things. And so at that point, I've heard many
- 20:56Speaker 3: you know, quote unquote anti bullying you know, programs, and
- 21:01Speaker 3: and you know, they're they're all great, and they're all great.
- 21:05Speaker 3: But when he was talking about three arts and heroes,
- 21:08Speaker 3: I love the action based part of it. It's it's,
- 21:12Speaker 3: you know, I love the I love the idea of
- 21:14Speaker 3: the bully drill, and that was something that really caught
- 21:18Speaker 3: my eye. So yeah, yeah, it's you know, it's you know,
- 21:24Speaker 3: it's absolutely unbelievable. And so that day I could choose
- 21:30Speaker 3: four different, four different, four different seminars to go do,
- 21:35Speaker 3: and that day I went to.
- 21:39Speaker 4: All four.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I went to the same same one. I went to
- 21:43Speaker 3: the I went to the Sweethearts and Heroes four times
- 21:46Speaker 3: in a row. I did the same thing.
- 21:47Speaker 4: And that night I was thinking about my life.
- 21:52Speaker 3: How when I grew up I was bullied as well,
- 21:55Speaker 3: but I did have some great friends and I you know,
- 21:57Speaker 3: and I thought of them as friends at the time,
- 21:59Speaker 3: and and uh, looking back, and I'm like, you know,
- 22:04Speaker 3: those kids, they were my superheroes and you know, and
- 22:10Speaker 3: I'm like, wow, like that that didn't really change how
- 22:14Speaker 3: I wanted to teach and everything, and you don't go
- 22:18Speaker 3: about this. So I emailed them that night and I said,
- 22:23Speaker 3: I want to get you guys in my school as
- 22:25Speaker 3: soon as I can. And it was probably that.
- 22:29Speaker 4: It was that spring when.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Uh, where we were gonna get him in and then yeah,
- 22:38Speaker 3: and you know, and we got him in and you know,
- 22:41Speaker 3: and the rest is history. Now it's been absolutely amazing.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That's that's incredible, man. So so this has been going
- 22:50Speaker 1: on for how long.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Now, I believe since about twenty eighteen is when we
- 22:56Speaker 3: started it.
- 22:57Speaker 1: And how of the kids responded so far, So.
- 23:01Speaker 4: It's been amazing. They they know when I come.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Into their flashom in the afternoon for about a half
- 23:10Speaker 3: hour that I'm doing something with you know, sweet arch
- 23:14Speaker 3: and heroes. They they absolutely love doing the bully drills.
- 23:17Speaker 3: They've they've loved it.
- 23:19Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:22Speaker 3: You know, it's gotten to the point now where they
- 23:26Speaker 3: don't want me to be the bully that you know,
- 23:27Speaker 3: they want to be the bully and they want to
- 23:29Speaker 3: see me via superhero this time. So they're really they're
- 23:33Speaker 3: taken into the different roles. And what I've noticed too,
- 23:37Speaker 3: when we first started out and I said, okay, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 3: make a group and everything, and they all go with
- 23:42Speaker 3: their friends. Now and I say, hey, make a group,
- 23:44Speaker 3: they're going with people that they never really hang out
- 23:47Speaker 3: with on the playground.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Or something like that. And they're going with different.
- 23:49Speaker 3: People just to get a whole, a whole different perspective,
- 23:54Speaker 3: which is a big word with us.
- 23:55Speaker 4: And you know, and it's been really really amazing to me.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Wow, I love hearing this. You know, it seems like
- 24:05Speaker 1: a lot of vulnerabilities can be exposed, whether you're you're
- 24:11Speaker 1: doing some some circle training, uh, you're you're all sitting there,
- 24:17Speaker 1: you're all listening, you can all see each other, or
- 24:23Speaker 1: the bully drills, you know, And and here's the thing,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you know, it's in what I love about Tom and
- 24:30Speaker 1: Rick the whole team is it's a really really serious thing,
- 24:38Speaker 1: but they make it fun and it can be really entertaining,
- 24:41Speaker 1: as you well know, I'm sure you've you've seen a
- 24:44Speaker 1: lot of laughter going on.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it is.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I mean, the bully drills have been they've been amazing,
- 24:54Speaker 3: and those are those have been great. And I've been
- 24:57Speaker 3: doing the circles now for about two years. Just to
- 25:00Speaker 3: the training this past fall up in.
- 25:02Speaker 4: The Rutlands Vermont, and that was that was unbelievable. That
- 25:06Speaker 4: was great.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And so now doing those as well, you really get
- 25:10Speaker 3: to know a lot more about the students that you
- 25:14Speaker 3: wouldn't know just in the bully grill. And and one
- 25:19Speaker 3: thing I do is I actually share with them as well.
- 25:21Speaker 3: So when I asked them, you know, who's your favorite superhero?
- 25:26Speaker 3: You know, you know, I'll tell them.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Mine as well. So it's it's it's really cool.
- 25:32Speaker 3: And I think it's important for teachers who kind of
- 25:35Speaker 3: just let down their guarded a little bit every now
- 25:37Speaker 3: and then, you know, and make themselves vulnerable as well,
- 25:40Speaker 3: because you know, if we're gonna ask kids to do it,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you know, we have to do it as well as anything.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so true, have you had any any uh, special moments, memories,
- 25:52Speaker 1: anything particular that will last in your memory of any
- 26:00Speaker 1: kind of experience that you've had doing anything with with
- 26:04Speaker 1: sweethearts and heroes, uh and seeing and experiencing the direct
- 26:09Speaker 1: impacts that it's had on students.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Yeah, two really stand out the uh. The first one
- 26:20Speaker 3: was actually the first time that Tom and Rick came
- 26:23Speaker 3: to my school. And and I will never forget that.
- 26:26Speaker 4: I was. I was, I was so excited.
- 26:28Speaker 3: We had a we had a voluntary morning faculty meeting
- 26:33Speaker 3: just so the retire step to meet Tom and Rick,
- 26:37Speaker 3: and and as they all walked out, they were just
- 26:42Speaker 3: hearing you know, Rick's story, you know the time to say.
- 26:45Speaker 3: There wasn't a dry eye in the room. They were like, Eric,
- 26:48Speaker 3: we are so excited for this to that. So when
- 26:51Speaker 3: I made the schedule at the time, there were no breaks.
- 26:57Speaker 3: There were no bunch of breaks, nothing at all. We
- 27:00Speaker 3: went from nine to fifteen, straight to three point thirty,
- 27:03Speaker 3: and so it was an amazing day. I filmed every
- 27:07Speaker 3: single one. I was taking videos the entire time. Everything
- 27:12Speaker 3: was going perfect. On the last session, I'm like, you
- 27:15Speaker 3: know what, I'm not going to film this one. I'm
- 27:17Speaker 3: just still tired now. So there was one girl. She
- 27:21Speaker 3: was a first grader at the time, and when Rick
- 27:24Speaker 3: walked out, she immediately just shelled up. She was absolutely
- 27:29Speaker 3: petrified of Rick. She saw Rick and she started crying
- 27:34Speaker 3: and her friends were around her and Tom's talking, and
- 27:39Speaker 3: that introduces Rick.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Rick starts talking.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Tom comes to me and goes Eric, when I talk
- 27:45Speaker 3: about bee for buddy, I'm going to call that girl up.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I goes, Tom, what are you doing?
- 27:51Speaker 3: She's petrified her Rick. She's not going to help him out,
- 27:53Speaker 3: like We've had such a good day, you know, I
- 27:55Speaker 3: am my superintendents here. Why are you going to ruin
- 27:58Speaker 3: the last session like this?
- 27:59Speaker 4: Tom? What are you doing to it?
- 28:00Speaker 3: So it came time for that and Tom called her
- 28:04Speaker 3: up and she she was a little rebucked in, but
- 28:06Speaker 3: she did get up. And so if Tom does this
- 28:11Speaker 3: whole thing, you know, you'll put this bully hat on everything.
- 28:15Speaker 3: You know, he goes over, he bullies Rick, he walks away,
- 28:17Speaker 3: and you know, Rick's standing there, goes man. You know,
- 28:21Speaker 3: he bullies me every day, and you know, no what
- 28:23Speaker 3: ever helps me out, and it's just you know, I
- 28:26Speaker 3: you know, I just don't like this anymore. But no
- 28:28Speaker 3: one wants to be my friend. And Rick kind of
- 28:32Speaker 3: crosses his hands across his body and she looked over,
- 28:37Speaker 3: and Tom goes, you know, I think you could help
- 28:40Speaker 3: him out, and she shakes her head no, So I'm like,
- 28:43Speaker 3: here we go.
- 28:44Speaker 4: So then, you know, Rick just.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Says, well, I guess I'll never have any friends. And
- 28:50Speaker 3: she looks up at Rick and you know, it kind
- 28:53Speaker 3: of pauses for a second, and then she walks over.
- 28:57Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, now at this point, no one even
- 29:00Speaker 3: touched Rick's hands all day. No one touched Rick's hands.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Every woman just grab him from the wrist. So she
- 29:07Speaker 3: walks over.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my god, she's gonna grab his hands,
- 29:10Speaker 4: and she does it.
- 29:11Speaker 3: She grabs his wrist, uncrosses his arms and hugs him.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Now I was like, everyone starts crying at that point.
- 29:22Speaker 3: And at that moment, I could probably say that was
- 29:27Speaker 3: the best moment in my entire teaching career to see
- 29:30Speaker 3: a kid overcome so much fear to go over and
- 29:36Speaker 3: hug an individual that is so different from anyone she's
- 29:39Speaker 3: ever met in her entire life. That was probably the
- 29:42Speaker 3: number one moment in my teaching career so far.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Wow.
- 29:50Speaker 1: To bring some context, in it. And for folks that
- 29:55Speaker 1: are watching and or listening right now who are not
- 29:59Speaker 1: familiar yere with with Rick. I've explained Rick many times.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I've had him on the air with me several times.
- 30:07Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, I think he's going to
- 30:09Speaker 1: be on with me again real soon, possibly next. I
- 30:14Speaker 1: got to look at the calendar here next Wednesday, I'm
- 30:16Speaker 1: not sure, but I will promote the crap out of it,
- 30:19Speaker 1: of course, but bring some context into this. For folks
- 30:23Speaker 1: that are not familiar with with Rick, why this, why
- 30:26Speaker 1: this this girl? And and and let's be honest, so
- 30:30Speaker 1: many other kids at so many other schools when they
- 30:33Speaker 1: see Rick are like, whoa.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Mm hmm, Yeah, So you know Rick was in You know,
- 30:41Speaker 3: Rick was in the army. And you know that's why
- 30:43Speaker 3: I tell the kid, you know, I might you know Rick.
- 30:46Speaker 4: Was in the army.
- 30:47Speaker 3: He's a very very very bad accident and now he
- 30:49Speaker 3: has no years, he has no nose, but he has
- 30:54Speaker 3: a pretty awesome robot leg and and he has burnt
- 31:00Speaker 3: over over his entire body. So he definitely looks very
- 31:06Speaker 3: very very different. But you know, one of the things
- 31:10Speaker 3: of the Rick is he he has a knack just
- 31:13Speaker 3: to connect with people like no one I've ever met
- 31:15Speaker 3: in my life. He's absolutely, absolutely amazing, you know, and
- 31:22Speaker 3: you know, like, you know, he him and Tom came
- 31:24Speaker 3: out with my family to dinner one night, and you know,
- 31:28Speaker 3: my kids still talk about that night. You know, they
- 31:32Speaker 3: actually joked, They're like, oh, yeah, I've never Rick and
- 31:33Speaker 3: that other guy. I mean, I've never saw Tom that well.
- 31:36Speaker 3: I mean, now he's gonna know that. But because you
- 31:38Speaker 3: go to hear this probably.
- 31:38Speaker 4: But but but I mean, Rick just has an absolute
- 31:42Speaker 4: knack just to connect to people.
- 31:44Speaker 3: But you know, one of the things that you know
- 31:48Speaker 3: that Tom and Rick what we say is, you know,
- 31:51Speaker 3: and they actually told our staff is when Rick walks out,
- 31:55Speaker 3: kids might say ill disgusting grows let them have them
- 32:00Speaker 3: actually action their children.
- 32:02Speaker 4: They have to get that out and just let Rick talk.
- 32:05Speaker 3: By the by the first minute of Rick talking, all
- 32:09Speaker 3: the kids are fully engaged.
- 32:11Speaker 4: They didn't even notice it anymore.
- 32:12Speaker 3: And the way Rick talked about being different and how
- 32:17Speaker 3: everyone's different and how yes he is a little more
- 32:21Speaker 3: different than everyone else, but you know what, so is everyone.
- 32:23Speaker 3: So it's you know, he's absolutely amazing at just conveying
- 32:28Speaker 3: that message.
- 32:29Speaker 1: He's he's different, on the on the exterior, and maybe
- 32:36Speaker 1: even on the interior. For compared to most of us.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I mean, this is a guy who has, honestly, he
- 32:46Speaker 1: has embraced a tragedy. He was blown up in a
- 32:53Speaker 1: roadside bomb in Iraq, covered in diesel fuel and was
- 33:00Speaker 1: earning alive, had his leg he amputated. I mean, how
- 33:08Speaker 1: he survived this after months and months and months, skin grafts,
- 33:14Speaker 1: so on and so forth, burned beyond recognition by his
- 33:19Speaker 1: own parents. How this guy has taken this tragedy and
- 33:28Speaker 1: at one point very much you know, not wanting to
- 33:34Speaker 1: live and asking his soldier comrade to put him out
- 33:43Speaker 1: of his misery if you know, you know it it
- 33:51Speaker 1: and for him to and I I and I understand
- 33:53Speaker 1: that there's different messaging here that he brings to an
- 33:57Speaker 1: older audience, a more your audience. But to bring his
- 34:02Speaker 1: message of hope and positivity and resiliency into the hearts
- 34:10Speaker 1: of children is amazing. But to also bring in his
- 34:15Speaker 1: messaging of hey, people will bully someone because of their
- 34:22Speaker 1: their skin color, but what about me? I you know,
- 34:29Speaker 1: I really don't have a lot of skin, and the
- 34:31Speaker 1: skin that I have is burned. I mean, it's there's
- 34:35Speaker 1: no way that he can hide any of that. And
- 34:40Speaker 1: I mean someone that's subjected to harassment, bullying, stereotyping. The
- 34:47Speaker 1: list goes on man Rick's kind of the poster child
- 34:53Speaker 1: of that, and he's he's flipped it around and he
- 34:57Speaker 1: understands that being different is something that you should embrace
- 35:05Speaker 1: and allow others to discover the person that's behind that skin,
- 35:14Speaker 1: no matter what that skin is, what color it is,
- 35:17Speaker 1: or whatever that is.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Rick Yarish, well, you know, one of the things I
- 35:23Speaker 3: talked to all my students about.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Is the word perspective. That's a big word for you know,
- 35:28Speaker 4: younger kids.
- 35:29Speaker 3: But you know, you know, I always, you know, tell
- 35:32Speaker 3: the story and you know I've heard Rick say it,
- 35:34Speaker 3: and I've seen the different interviews with Ric say it too.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Is you know, Rick, if you can go back to
- 35:40Speaker 3: that one day, you know, change anything, what would it be?
- 35:43Speaker 3: And he says nothing, because I wouldn't be where I
- 35:46Speaker 3: am today if that actually didn't happen. And to hear
- 35:49Speaker 3: that is like, Rick, you know, you got blown up, right,
- 35:53Speaker 3: Like come on, but it's absolutely amazing. Just I mean,
- 35:59Speaker 3: he took a extreme negative in his life and turned
- 36:02Speaker 3: it into the most positive thing I've never seen anyone do.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Same here, Same here. I've interviewed thousands of people over
- 36:13Speaker 1: the course of my career, Rick stands out as one that.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I mean, if I was interviewed tomorrow by someone and
- 36:25Speaker 1: they asked me that question, who do you remember the most,
- 36:30Speaker 1: Rick would be right up there, top three probably. I mean,
- 36:34Speaker 1: he is, It's just and Tom too, man. I mean
- 36:39Speaker 1: these guys. Tom Is is like the brainchild of this
- 36:44Speaker 1: and is like he's unstoppable, and Tom Murphy is like
- 36:49Speaker 1: the goal is to change as many lives as possible ultimately, ultimately,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and I was saying this yesterday, to prevent a kid
- 37:04Speaker 1: from going through with taking their own life and giving
- 37:12Speaker 1: up on hope and the rest of their life ahead
- 37:17Speaker 1: of themselves, that's the goal, I think ultimately for sweethearts
- 37:21Speaker 1: and heroes, be a better be a better kid, a
- 37:25Speaker 1: better student, a better human being, help others, but ultimately
- 37:34Speaker 1: stay grounded and connected enough in your life where you
- 37:38Speaker 1: know what the priorities are of what's most important, work
- 37:42Speaker 1: through it and survive this crazy world that we live
- 37:46Speaker 1: in and flourish.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Yep.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean just to just to go back on
- 37:52Speaker 3: Tom real quick.
- 37:52Speaker 4: I mean it's every time I meet with.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Tom at a seminar or he comes to the school
- 37:59Speaker 3: I need. When I went up to Rutland, you know,
- 38:02Speaker 3: in the fall, you know, I was having a pretty
- 38:04Speaker 3: rough fall. There's a lot of changes in my school
- 38:06Speaker 3: and you know, things, things weren't.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Going real well.
- 38:08Speaker 3: And you know, and I drove up there, you know,
- 38:12Speaker 3: it was about you know, all the under four hours from.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Me, you know, tired. I get there and I leave.
- 38:20Speaker 3: You can't help but leave so excited to get back
- 38:23Speaker 3: to the classroom right away. Yeah. With Tom, he just
- 38:27Speaker 3: has this infectious energy that you know, if you're not
- 38:30Speaker 3: excited about education when you're done with Tom, then you
- 38:35Speaker 3: shouldn't be in education.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I'm sorry, it's just it's unbelievable.
- 38:40Speaker 3: I just getting you energized to take this message and
- 38:44Speaker 3: go right back and just tell everyone about it.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so so so true. You know, what's what's next
- 38:57Speaker 1: for the Brewster School District? What do you what are
- 39:02Speaker 1: you hoping to do? Are you are you hoping to well,
- 39:07Speaker 1: I'll let you answer that.
- 39:09Speaker 4: Yeah. No.
- 39:10Speaker 3: So we had a absolutely amazing program going for like
- 39:15Speaker 3: the past two or three years.
- 39:17Speaker 4: It was go.
- 39:19Speaker 3: So Tom and Rick came to the elementary school and
- 39:22Speaker 3: and then I had him go to an intermediate school,
- 39:25Speaker 3: which is a three four five building, and then they
- 39:28Speaker 3: did uh and then do it at the high school too,
- 39:31Speaker 3: And they've now done two the two with the high school,
- 39:35Speaker 3: which has been amazing. And what we do at the
- 39:36Speaker 3: high school is we do it's a an hour and
- 39:41Speaker 3: a half a program in the auditorium and then we
- 39:44Speaker 3: think about eighteen to twenty kids, you know, and then
- 39:47Speaker 3: you know, and we put them uh do some training
- 39:50Speaker 3: and then those kids would come over to the elementary
- 39:54Speaker 3: school and they would do bully jokes with all the kids,
- 39:59Speaker 3: and it was and it was amazing, and it was
- 40:03Speaker 3: great for for about two years. In the past year
- 40:07Speaker 3: or two, my high school contacts have kind of moved
- 40:11Speaker 3: around a bit, so that programs kind of lost touch.
- 40:14Speaker 3: So I'm hoping to get that back up off the
- 40:17Speaker 3: ground and get those kids back in the element into
- 40:20Speaker 3: the elementary school, because I mean, I could talk to
- 40:24Speaker 3: them all day, but to have high school kids, I mean, one,
- 40:27Speaker 3: they're so much cooler than I am in the kid's eyes.
- 40:31Speaker 3: So I mean, to have a high school kid walk
- 40:34Speaker 3: into your walk into your first grade classroom, I talk
- 40:38Speaker 3: to you.
- 40:38Speaker 4: And sit down on the floor with you. It's like,
- 40:40Speaker 4: that is the coolest thing that ever happened in their
- 40:42Speaker 4: little lives right now.
- 40:44Speaker 3: It's you know, it's a lot better than Nate. So
- 40:47Speaker 3: you know that would be my next step is to
- 40:50Speaker 3: get that you know, back up off the ground. And
- 40:52Speaker 3: that's here a booster. I mean, I've you know, I've
- 40:55Speaker 3: done preventations at my kids own school, which I love.
- 40:58Speaker 4: That that was the for fun.
- 41:00Speaker 3: And now my wife is going to have them go
- 41:04Speaker 3: to their school I think in the spring. Wow, I
- 41:07Speaker 3: just want to get them in. And I mean people
- 41:09Speaker 3: ask me, you know, what's the best thing you do.
- 41:11Speaker 3: I'm like, your hero, Like what's that. I'm like, I'm
- 41:14Speaker 3: a time you guy, because I could talk about it
- 41:15Speaker 3: for hours.
- 41:16Speaker 4: It is. It's been an amazing program at Brewster.
- 41:19Speaker 3: It's changed my you know, change how I teach, you know,
- 41:22Speaker 3: change how I you know.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Talk to students. You know.
- 41:26Speaker 3: I just can't say enough about the program.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, you you know. Tom's pretty physically fit still. Yeah,
- 41:39Speaker 1: former u f C fighter talks a lot of it.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Talks a big talk about how he's always doing push
- 41:48Speaker 1: ups and setups and and cal stenex and and how
- 41:51Speaker 1: he runs ten miles every morning at four a m.
- 41:55Speaker 1: And we've all heard the details of it, the the
- 42:01Speaker 1: you know, the abs everything. Have you have you ever
- 42:07Speaker 1: seen him actually do a single yes or no? A
- 42:11Speaker 1: single push up? Yes? How was? How was the form?
- 42:18Speaker 1: How was the form of the posture? Was it was? It?
- 42:21Speaker 1: Was it correct?
- 42:23Speaker 3: Well, time's a lot bigger than me, so I'm gonna
- 42:25Speaker 3: say it was absolutely perfect, perfect form?
- 42:28Speaker 1: All right? Did he did he do more than than
- 42:32Speaker 1: than one? I mean I've seen him do one, possibly
- 42:35Speaker 1: two in a in a hotel room. But did he
- 42:39Speaker 1: do how many? Did he do?
- 42:41Speaker 4: So?
- 42:41Speaker 3: There is actually proof it was during It was during
- 42:45Speaker 3: COVID and he had like a like a zoom for
- 42:48Speaker 3: a bunch of people, and and I went on and
- 42:52Speaker 3: it was in April, which is we still do it
- 42:55Speaker 3: here at our school. It's the fifty thousand push up challenge.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Our entire school has to do fifty thousand push ups
- 43:02Speaker 3: and then they get to pour a bucket of rice
- 43:04Speaker 3: water on me, which is great. But Tom had me
- 43:08Speaker 3: on the zoom. I was in my living room. It
- 43:10Speaker 3: was like, you know, ten o'clock at night and he goes, hey, Eric,
- 43:14Speaker 3: why do we bag out some push ups quick. I said,
- 43:16Speaker 3: all right, fine, I'm thinking we'll do like five or ten.
- 43:19Speaker 3: We both did fifty, So there is proof that Tom
- 43:22Speaker 3: could do fifty in a row.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Damn.
- 43:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:25Speaker 3: And I did it and I was curtin and I'm
- 43:27Speaker 3: sure Tom was absolutely fine after him.
- 43:29Speaker 1: So yeah, I was going to ask you how much
- 43:32Speaker 1: air he was sucking after that?
- 43:33Speaker 4: But Tom, he was good.
- 43:36Speaker 1: So so has has Tom uh wanted to to get
- 43:40Speaker 1: back to this fifty thousand push up challenge with with
- 43:45Speaker 1: you in your school?
- 43:49Speaker 3: Well? He he usually makes a video cour use every
- 43:54Speaker 3: year and he sends it in you know, you know,
- 43:57Speaker 3: you know when the kids go you know crazy for him.
- 43:59Speaker 3: You know. One you know, one of the things that
- 44:01Speaker 3: that I love is that when when he.
- 44:03Speaker 4: Does it, he usually has you know, Rick on the
- 44:06Speaker 4: video too, and you know Rick just is like.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Oh no, Tom, you know, you didn't go low enough.
- 44:10Speaker 3: You know it's gonna come up high enough. And so
- 44:12Speaker 3: it's so it's kind of cool. They'll see in there,
- 44:16Speaker 3: you're seeing their friendly banter go on. But oh yeah,
- 44:19Speaker 3: Tom always sends.
- 44:19Speaker 4: A video every year.
- 44:21Speaker 3: I usually making videos, send it to you know, the
- 44:24Speaker 3: entire team, which has grown so much over the years.
- 44:29Speaker 3: I mean with the addition of you know, Pat has
- 44:32Speaker 3: been like, oh my god, Pat's amazing, you know, and
- 44:36Speaker 3: you know, and everyone now you know, you know, behind
- 44:40Speaker 3: the scenes, Leon is just you know, he's emailing me
- 44:44Speaker 3: every day about something.
- 44:45Speaker 4: It's you know, I got so much information from him.
- 44:48Speaker 3: It's you It's that entire team is just unreal right now.
- 44:52Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean we're gonna be doing it again,
- 44:56Speaker 3: you know, this April, which is a lot of fun
- 44:59Speaker 3: and uh yeah, I'm sure Tom and Rick will you
- 45:02Speaker 3: send a nice video over to us again and you know,
- 45:04Speaker 3: and the.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Kids will love it.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I'm surprised that Tom stopped with or or didn't allow
- 45:15Speaker 1: for more of a challenge here in not so much
- 45:21Speaker 1: in the fifty thousand, but just a simple bucket of
- 45:25Speaker 1: ice water over the head. I'm surprised that Tom hasn't
- 45:28Speaker 1: upped the ante on that. Do you think that he might?
- 45:34Speaker 3: Well, the the bucket was actually my idea, just to
- 45:38Speaker 3: do as something for the kids. You know, we do
- 45:42Speaker 3: different things, you know, almost every other month here which
- 45:45Speaker 3: I get pied in the face or something like that.
- 45:47Speaker 1: So yeah, I saw that last night.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's fun. But you know, you know you've
- 45:54Speaker 3: done the bucket every year.
- 45:55Speaker 4: If anyone has.
- 45:56Speaker 3: A better idea, I am open for you know, new
- 46:00Speaker 3: and inventive ideas.
- 46:02Speaker 4: So send them my way.
- 46:04Speaker 3: I'm you know, I'm I'll definitely off of something new.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Maybe a little uh ice bath for four minutes, just
- 46:13Speaker 1: just an idea.
- 46:15Speaker 4: I'll do it. That's why would me?
- 46:18Speaker 1: So do they have to so the students have to
- 46:20Speaker 1: record their their push ups? They have to do this
- 46:24Speaker 1: in front of you. Is there proof of the of
- 46:26Speaker 1: these push ups?
- 46:28Speaker 4: Yes?
- 46:28Speaker 3: So what they do is when they came in for class.
- 46:31Speaker 3: So about say forty two kids in the gym at once,
- 46:38Speaker 3: So we'll do yeah, so we'll do you know, ten
- 46:41Speaker 3: push ups. You know, so there's you know, the four
- 46:46Speaker 3: hundred and twenty push ups right there, and then and
- 46:48Speaker 3: then I put it up on a board, on a
- 46:50Speaker 3: whole sheet, and it adds it up. And then every
- 46:53Speaker 3: day when they come in, I have a total for
- 46:56Speaker 3: the entire school. And then you just takes about your
- 47:00Speaker 3: three weeks and they get to you know, fifty thousand,
- 47:02Speaker 3: and then I say, okay, if you get to the
- 47:04Speaker 3: sixty you know, you know, maybe two bucks of ice
- 47:08Speaker 3: water on he or something like.
- 47:08Speaker 1: That, yeah, finally this morning. Man, I love hearing this.
- 47:16Speaker 1: This stuff, this is is such great, it's positive, it's fun.
- 47:22Speaker 1: What's what's the future looking like for the Brewster School
- 47:27Speaker 1: District and and your school specifically with sweethearts and heroes, I.
- 47:35Speaker 4: Mean moving forward? I would definitely one.
- 47:39Speaker 3: I try to have every group for every great see
- 47:44Speaker 3: Tom and Rick at least once, so I would probably
- 47:48Speaker 3: like I would like to have them back next year.
- 47:52Speaker 4: And we have a lot of new staff we.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Have We're going to have an entire new admin as well,
- 47:58Speaker 3: so you know, just to have them really experienced them,
- 48:02Speaker 3: you know, at least once is is absolutely amazing. I
- 48:07Speaker 3: would love to, you know, train some more high school students,
- 48:11Speaker 3: have them come over. You know, having that was was
- 48:15Speaker 3: really really good, and you know, I would love to
- 48:19Speaker 3: do a I would love to do a circle training
- 48:22Speaker 3: here here in Booster. I mean that to me is yeah,
- 48:26Speaker 3: I mean those are unbelievable and if you ever get
- 48:29Speaker 3: a chance to be a part of that, it is
- 48:32Speaker 3: you know, you walk in and you know, the first
- 48:36Speaker 3: couple of questions you're kind of like, you know, I mean,
- 48:38Speaker 3: I don't want to share too much, and then you
- 48:40Speaker 3: hear what other people are saying. You're like, oh, yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 3: that's happened to me as well, and you just start
- 48:44Speaker 3: talking about it and next you know, they're sharing things
- 48:48Speaker 3: that were I mean, I was in Rutland telling you know,
- 48:51Speaker 3: complete stranger things I've never told my best friends. And
- 48:54Speaker 3: it's just these circles have a way of just you
- 48:57Speaker 3: feel so open and comfortable.
- 49:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's just sharing. It really makes you feel better.
- 49:05Speaker 3: And to hear other people is hear what other people
- 49:09Speaker 3: are going through, and you know, you know when the
- 49:11Speaker 3: pros and cons in their life is is really good.
- 49:14Speaker 3: So I mean I would love to, you know, put
- 49:16Speaker 3: our staff through that as well, just to have them
- 49:18Speaker 3: experience one circle, like, wow, this something that you can
- 49:21Speaker 3: really bring it to the classrooms, you know, just a
- 49:23Speaker 3: little fifteen minute break. Hey guys, let's they'll make a
- 49:27Speaker 3: circle and you know, let's talk about the things real quick.
- 49:31Speaker 1: What do you say to any school? And usually I
- 49:37Speaker 1: kind of close out with this when I have someone
- 49:40Speaker 1: on from Sweethearts and Heroes, any school, any teacher, any principal,
- 49:45Speaker 1: any superintendent, any parent who's listening in, any student who
- 49:52Speaker 1: might be listening right now that hasn't yet discovered Sweethearts
- 49:58Speaker 1: and heroes. Hasn't yet given them an opportunity to come
- 50:04Speaker 1: into their school and at the very least do an assembly.
- 50:10Speaker 1: What do you say?
- 50:14Speaker 3: In my twenty three years of education, I've been through
- 50:17Speaker 3: many different programs, many different bullying you know programs, initiative
- 50:25Speaker 3: stuff like that. This is the best thing that ever
- 50:28Speaker 3: happened to me as a teacher. And I'm saying that
- 50:31Speaker 3: not because of the anti bullying and empathy, just it
- 50:35Speaker 3: made me a better teacher as well. And get this
- 50:39Speaker 3: in your school if you are a parent, right to
- 50:44Speaker 3: your admin, write to your board of education. Get them
- 50:47Speaker 3: to come into your school, whether it be Tom Rick
- 50:50Speaker 3: or Pat or all three to be the best obviously,
- 50:53Speaker 3: but just hearing their message and how they have how
- 51:00Speaker 3: they deal with bullying.
- 51:02Speaker 4: And hopelessness and empathy.
- 51:04Speaker 3: It is so important to have your children learn this.
- 51:10Speaker 3: And I think the most important thing is that it
- 51:13Speaker 3: is action based. A lot of programs tell you how to,
- 51:17Speaker 3: you know, be nice and be kind and don't bully.
- 51:21Speaker 3: But then, like I always tell my students, like, well,
- 51:25Speaker 3: why do we have fire drills we practice what to.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Do in case of an actual fire? Well, what if
- 51:32Speaker 4: we didn't practice that, we wouldn't know what to do.
- 51:34Speaker 3: So that's why we have bully drives, just to tell
- 51:37Speaker 3: kids to go into an awkward situation with no training
- 51:40Speaker 3: at all. It's not fair for us to do that.
- 51:42Speaker 3: So I mean, having those bully bills, having those having
- 51:47Speaker 3: those skills at a younger age, and then working throughout
- 51:50Speaker 3: the circles, you know, in the intermediate and middle school,
- 51:54Speaker 3: especially high school levels as well. I think it's very important.
- 51:58Speaker 3: So this program has really change culture of my building,
- 52:04Speaker 3: and I've seen it change the culture of you know,
- 52:08Speaker 3: many schools. I mean, I mean I love seeing I
- 52:11Speaker 3: mean all the things that that Tom post about.
- 52:15Speaker 4: You know, he's at this school. The kids are now
- 52:18Speaker 4: doing bullied drills and different school and stuff like that,
- 52:20Speaker 4: and it's amazing.
- 52:21Speaker 3: But I mean, just do whatever you can as a parent,
- 52:25Speaker 3: as an you know, as a teacher, as an admin.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Get them in your school as soon as you can,
- 52:31Speaker 3: because you will never regret them.
- 52:34Speaker 1: Yeah, great stuff, man. I listen, I can't thank you
- 52:40Speaker 1: enough for your time this morning.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Much.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I know that I know you need to get back
- 52:47Speaker 1: to it. You've you've got to dive in here, uh
- 52:50Speaker 1: to the day. But everything you have said on the
- 52:53Speaker 1: air this morning was so profound and memorable. And just
- 53:00Speaker 1: keep on doing what you're doing. Man. I mean, you're,
- 53:03Speaker 1: you and the rest of your team, along with sweethearts
- 53:06Speaker 1: and heroes, are making some real change happen. You guys
- 53:11Speaker 1: really are man, You're you're you're on the edge of it.
- 53:16Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you, man.
- 53:17Speaker 3: I got to give all the credit goes to Tom,
- 53:20Speaker 3: Tom and Rick pat and the entire team there. You know,
- 53:23Speaker 3: doubt out their hard work. You know that you know
- 53:26Speaker 3: this would never happen, and they are absolutely amazing.
- 53:29Speaker 4: At what they do.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Absolutely, man, thank you so much.
- 53:33Speaker 4: Eric, Yes, thanks, thank you as well.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Eric bizzetto JFK Elementary School, part of the Brewster School
- 53:43Speaker 1: District over in New York. What an absolute pleasure. And
- 53:49Speaker 1: you know, listen, I want to say this, especially with
- 53:53Speaker 1: regard to yesterday's podcast, keep the comments coming in about bullying.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Yesterday's episode was was and today backed up by Today
- 54:07Speaker 1: was really a powerful. A lot of stuff uncovered, and
- 54:20Speaker 1: so much of this is subjective in nature. Everybody has
- 54:24Speaker 1: got a different story, a different experience. There are no
- 54:30Speaker 1: two situations that are exactly alike. I know there's a
- 54:37Speaker 1: lot of work to be done and I'm going to
- 54:40Speaker 1: reach out to the Barrytown School and see if they're
- 54:45Speaker 1: they're willing to come on and talk about this in
- 54:48Speaker 1: Berry City as well. And in the end, it's it's
- 54:53Speaker 1: not about pointing fingers, it's not about blaming. It's about
- 54:58Speaker 1: trying to get things going in the right direction. And
- 55:03Speaker 1: that that is a tall order, man, that's a big
- 55:09Speaker 1: hill to climb. But every Wednesday we climb that hill
- 55:15Speaker 1: a little bit higher every time, especially with Sweethearts and
- 55:19Speaker 1: Heroes behind us pushing us up, and we're going to
- 55:24Speaker 1: keep chipping away at it. We are here locally and
- 55:30Speaker 1: across the region with a team like Sweethearts and Heroes.
- 55:33Speaker 1: How can you not great stuff this morning? Man? Already
- 55:39Speaker 1: looking forward to next Wednesday. We got a question here
- 55:44Speaker 1: about the roads this morning. From what I understand, from
- 55:48Speaker 1: what I'm gathering, the roads are pretty good traveling between
- 55:54Speaker 1: Barry and Montpellier. Nothing that is out of the ordinary.
- 56:01Speaker 1: They're wet roads, they're slushy, they're messy, but they're not treacherous.
- 56:09Speaker 1: They're not dangerous at least from what I've heard and
- 56:14Speaker 1: from what I can see outside my window here right
- 56:17Speaker 1: on the sidewalk on North Main Street and Berry. If
- 56:21Speaker 1: there's anything that is particular that is that that is
- 56:27Speaker 1: noteworthy to let us all know about, please do tell,
- 56:32Speaker 1: please do share, post comment right now and we'll get
- 56:36Speaker 1: that information on. But things seem to be moving pretty
- 56:42Speaker 1: well out there, despite the snowfall that we've had last night,
- 56:48Speaker 1: which I think kind of moved its way out just
- 56:52Speaker 1: about the right time for a morning commute that was
- 56:56Speaker 1: significantly better than the evening commute last night. The tractor
- 57:00Speaker 1: trailer on the interstate last night, I'm not sure what
- 57:06Speaker 1: time that was was pretty late, I think, but I
- 57:09Speaker 1: hope everybody was okay as a result of that. Recovery
- 57:15Speaker 1: Day Today, on this eleventh day of February, at the
- 57:20Speaker 1: Supreme Courthouse Auditorium, things going on until three o'clock, absolutely
- 57:29Speaker 1: free and open to the public. Every single year, Ver
- 57:36Speaker 1: Honors gather at the State House and celebrate recovery, an
- 57:40Speaker 1: advocate for change and bring awareness, and they do a
- 57:50Speaker 1: great job. I hope that you're part of it, whether
- 57:55Speaker 1: you are battling recovery or not, show your support to
- 57:59Speaker 1: the those that are fighting the good fight every single
- 58:04Speaker 1: day of their lives. Recovery Day we shared it up
- 58:07Speaker 1: on the aired out page early this morning. Being that
- 58:14Speaker 1: it is Wednesday, I want to make sure that everybody knows.
- 58:18Speaker 1: And I talked about this a little bit at the
- 58:20Speaker 1: front of this morning's episode. Today is a great day
- 58:25Speaker 1: to take a deep breath, to relax, to unwind, and
- 58:32Speaker 1: take advantage of Wellness Wednesday. It is something that Washington
- 58:38Speaker 1: County Mental Health has been putting on for a long
- 58:41Speaker 1: time years and it is so popular. The word is
- 58:47Speaker 1: out on Wellness Wednesday. It is free. It is a
- 58:52Speaker 1: free service for our community. It doesn't matter who you are,
- 58:56Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what town you live in. You can
- 59:00Speaker 1: leave the wallet in the car. Come on indoors twenty
- 59:04Speaker 1: three Summer Street right here in the Granite City and
- 59:07Speaker 1: treat yourself to maybe some acupressure, acupuncture, mindfulness meditation. They're
- 59:14Speaker 1: doing yoga, they're serving up hot tea. You can get
- 59:16Speaker 1: a chair massage, a table massage. They do sound healing, reiki,
- 59:22Speaker 1: mile facial body release. And I'm just barely scratching the
- 59:27Speaker 1: surface here. If you would like to reserve a time
- 59:30Speaker 1: for one of the chair or table massages, or the
- 59:34Speaker 1: reiki or the mile facial body release, call Robin right
- 59:39Speaker 1: now and let her know It starts at four point
- 59:43Speaker 1: thirty coast till seven o'clock. Here's the phone number and
- 59:46Speaker 1: I'll put it in the in the comments here eight
- 59:50Speaker 1: pot two of course four seven nine four zero five
- 59:53Speaker 1: to five. Tell her that aired out censure and that
- 59:58Speaker 1: that's where you heard about it. Nine four zero five
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: to five, twenty three Summer Street right here in Barry,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Washington County Mental Health. I can't say enough good things
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: about them, what they do and have been doing for
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: over sixty years, person centered care right here in our community. Amazing.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Ten thousand for honors and this is just a rough
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: estimate in just the last year have benefited directly or
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: indirectly from Washington County Mental Health ten thousand for honors. Incredible.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: What else is happening? Wing Wednesday over at the VFW
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Post seven ninety in Barry that starts at five o'clock tonight.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: You can go over to Wellness Wednesday first, get your massage,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: then go over to the Post seven ninety and reb
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: some wings. Ron Tolman and company cooking them up and
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: they do a great job. Let's see Thursday tomorrow bingo
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: at the Canadian Club. Something to note here looking ahead
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: on the calendar February twenty sixth. The All Veterans Dinner
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: is at the American Legion Post ten, February twenty sixth.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: On the menu Shepherd's Pie free for all Veterans. When
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I hear the words Shepherd's Pie, something happens to me
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: this weekend day after Tomorrow, Friday, and I know, I know,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: it's Friday the thirteenth. Everyone's freaking out about that. Whatever.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about Friday the thirteenth from that standpoint.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I'm thinking about Friday the thirteenth because it's the night
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: to Shine at the Barry Oaks Lodge. I'm thinking about
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: the fact that we've got a hundred honored guests that
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: are going to be under one roof having the night
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: of their lives. That's what I'm thinking about. That's a record,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: by the way, one hundred and just about two hundred
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: volunteers that are making this happen behind the scenes and
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: right there on the stage, almost two hundred people. The hair,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: the make up, the shoeshine, the karaoke, the card games,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: the entertainment, the DJ, the food, the paparazzi, the photographers,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: all the people that are doing medical stuff in security
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: and check in, and I mean there is a lot.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: There are so many moving parts that go to this.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: And tip the hat to the faith community Church from
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: making this happen again. I think this is year number four.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: It's Friday night at the American Legion, I'm sorry at
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: the Bury Oaks Lodge and it's gonna be amazing. I
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: just cannot wait. I can't wait to show my shoes
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: that I'm going to be wearing anyway. And I want
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: to give a shout out this morning to Amy Anderson
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: and Amy's Armoir. They've been doing this pay it Forward
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: program for Night to Shine guests to cover the costs
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: of their formal wear. They will not let anyone say
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I can't go because I can't afford formal wear. They
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: won't let it happen. So just a big thank you
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: to Amy's Armoir, Amy Anderson, Robin Kates and the rest
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: of the team over there for doing just good things,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: great things for our community. I love it. Also, this
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: weekend is the Barry figure skating event, but there is
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: so much going on. There is so much going on.

- 1:06:00Speaker 1: are trending right now, not just in Fremont, but in
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: the nation and things that are going on this week
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: crazy stuff, the whole Nancy Guthrie thing, the the the
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: the the the snapshots of the video of this guy
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: with the ring doorbell camera and why it's taken so
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: long for that picture to show itself. I'm just as
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: baffled as you are the guy that was pulled over
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: in a traffic stop and detained and then released last
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: night as as a suspect. There's a lot of questions.

- 1:07:25Speaker 1: say you about that? We're gonna get into some of
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: the world headlines that have been trending this week and
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: some of the Vermont headlines as well tomorrow. What's going
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: on in Williston with the ice protests, arrests have been made. Yeah,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: there's no question, there's no doubt that there's some really
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: funky things going on here in Vermont and across our nation, really,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: and there is in a day that goes by, frankly
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: that I don't scratch my head and say, what world
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: are we living in? Man, Honestly, what the hell's going on?
