- 0:00The Lord himself posed A troubling question.
- 0:03What manner of men ought ye to be to become like Christ Are
- 0:08words that stick in the throat, especially if we clearly see
- 0:12where we are and how far we have yet to go.
- 0:16If the standard be not Christ, then who in the world who Christ
- 0:25is the standard? The fact that we do and will
- 0:30fall short does not mean the bar should be lowered to close the
- 0:35gap. There's a different plan for
- 0:38closing the gap. Hello and welcome back.
- 0:56My name is Larry Corbridge and this is the Stand Forever
- 1:00series. The focus of the last episode is
- 1:05believe. The focus today is Jesus Christ
- 1:11the measure. Together these two episodes
- 1:16foreshadow really the conclusion of the series, which is to
- 1:19believe and follow Christ to the end and help others do the same.
- 1:26The apostle Paul said of our day that in the dispensation of the
- 1:31fullness of times. Of course, this time he, meaning
- 1:37God the Father, might gather together in one all things in
- 1:43Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth even in
- 1:50him. Popular advice today is compare
- 1:55yourself with yourself and not with others, each day trying to
- 2:01do and be a little better. While that's pretty good advice
- 2:05as far as it goes, it doesn't really go quite far enough.
- 2:11You can't really improve without a standard.
- 2:16You may putter around comparing yourself today with yesterday,
- 2:21but ultimately you must look up and ahead to where you are going
- 2:26and deliberately steer and move in that direction.
- 2:31Then and only then can you measure your progress.
- 2:36Paul also said this very important thing, for we dare not
- 2:41make ourselves of the number I think, meaning blending in with
- 2:46the crowd or compare ourselves, he said, with some that commend
- 2:52themselves. Which might mean people who hold
- 2:56themselves up as a standard, but they measuring themselves by
- 3:03themselves and comparing themselves among themselves are
- 3:08not wise, said Paul. Measuring yourself against the
- 3:14standard of those around you is not a good idea.
- 3:20However good your crowd may be, no one can really enable or
- 3:26unlock unlock your full divine potential.
- 3:31Paul continues with these important words.
- 3:34But we will not boast of things without our measure, he said.
- 3:41But according to the measure of the rule which God hath
- 3:45distributed or given to us, which is Christ, a measure to
- 3:51reach, listen to this, a measure to reach, even unto you.
- 3:58For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure again, for we
- 4:04stretch not ourselves beyond our measure.
- 4:09Paula's right. We don't stretch ourselves
- 4:13beyond our measure or goal. Rodger Bannister, for example,
- 4:19had a goal, a standard or measure, specifically the four
- 4:25minute mile. He didn't run the four minute
- 4:29mile in 1956 by comparing himself with other runners, or
- 4:35even really by just comparing himself with himself from
- 4:38day-to-day, trying to improve each day.
- 4:41He wasn't trying to win races. He wasn't racing against anyone
- 4:46else on the track. He had a different standard or
- 4:49measure. He was racing against the clock,
- 4:53yes, he was racing against himself, trying to improve each
- 4:57day, but ultimately he was racing against the clock. 4
- 5:02minutes was his measure, not other runners and not even past
- 5:07performance. We do not surpass whatever our
- 5:12measure is again, Paul said. We stretch not ourselves beyond
- 5:19our measure, and the measure which God has given us is His
- 5:28Son. The best course is the highest
- 5:34of all human endeavors. Look to Christ and compare
- 5:38yourself with Him. Now with that said, alarms are
- 5:46sounding, bugles are blaring, red flags are flying, and a
- 5:50small army of people are rushing forward waving white flags,
- 5:55calling out. Look down, look around, anywhere
- 5:59but up. They want to save us from
- 6:03disappointment, anxiety, sacrifice, hardship, and
- 6:07heartache from aiming so high, but they're really trying to
- 6:12save themselves from those same painful tutorials.
- 6:18The Lord himself posed what is sometimes viewed as a troubling
- 6:23question, and you probably know what it is, He said.
- 6:28What manner of men ought ye to be?
- 6:33Then? Answering his own question, he
- 6:36said, Even as I am equally troubling, Christ also said,
- 6:46therefore I would that you should be perfect, even as I or
- 6:51your Father in heaven is perfect.
- 6:55But to become perfect, to become like Christ, are words that
- 7:01stick in the throat, and we may cringe a bit when we hear them.
- 7:07For all of their grandeur, they also seem grandiose, especially
- 7:12if we clearly see where we are and how far we have yet to go.
- 7:19Nothing said by the Lord has created more angst than those
- 7:24statements. They are deemed by some to be
- 7:28socially insensitive, if not inexcusable, harmful to
- 7:33emotional and mental health. Who are we anyway to think, much
- 7:40less say such things? One answer might be children of
- 7:49God. Children of the Almighty eternal
- 7:54God. And those words, even as I am,
- 7:59those words, and I would that you should be perfect, aren't
- 8:03our words anyway. They are his.
- 8:09And should we shun the words of God because they are not smooth
- 8:13and easy to swallow? If you get discouraged, you're
- 8:20not alone. Not hardly.
- 8:23When the presence of God withdrew from Moses, when he was
- 8:26again separated from God, he said, Now for this, 'cause I
- 8:31know man is nothing by comparison.
- 8:37When Job saw the Lord, he cried out, I abhor myself.
- 8:44When Isaiah saw the Lord, he said, Woe is me, for I am undone
- 8:50because I am a man of unclean lips.
- 8:56Nephi said, O wretched man that I am.
- 9:01Ammon said, I know that I am nothing.
- 9:05As to my strength, I am weak. King Benjamin said Remember the
- 9:10greatness of God and your own nothingness by comparison,
- 9:17meaning our utter dependence on God.
- 9:22It is rather it is rather the foolish mantra of the self
- 9:27esteem craze of the past 60 or 70 years.
- 9:33You're OK just the way you are. Or even the better advice,
- 9:38compare yourself with your with yourself that are harmful more
- 9:44than the brightness of your potential.
- 9:48So if you feel low when you see how far you must go, you're not
- 9:55alone, not hardly. I have felt the same every day.
- 10:04Anyone earnest and honest about his or her discipleship feels
- 10:11the same. It is part of the process.
- 10:17Don't be blinded by the brightness of your potential.
- 10:20Rather, let it be the beacon that beckons you onward.
- 10:26We might say focus on repentance more than perfection.
- 10:31Well, that's fine, but you can't have one without the other.
- 10:37Repentance has no meaning without perfection.
- 10:42There must be a standard to measure human conduct, to see
- 10:46the shortfall, and then work to close the gap, which is
- 10:51repentance again, Paul said. For we stretch not ourselves
- 10:59beyond our measure. Without a standard or measure,
- 11:04repentance and self improvement are only mushy human relativism,
- 11:11comfortable but aimless human development, and without a
- 11:16standard it leads to chaos. If the standard be not Christ,
- 11:24then who in the world who? If the standard be not
- 11:31perfection, then what in the world what Christ is?
- 11:38Christ is He is the standard against which we should measure
- 11:48ourselves but not break ourselves.
- 11:53And He is perfection. The fact that we do and will
- 12:02fall short does not mean the bar should be lowered to close the
- 12:08gap. There's a different plan for
- 12:11closing the gap. Jesus Christ is the way.
- 12:17He is the standard. He shows us where to aim.
- 12:21But as the Redeemer, He closes the gap when we miss.
- 12:28The fact that we do and will fall short should place in
- 12:33perfect focus our desperate, absolute need for Jesus Christ,
- 12:41our need for the help and intervention Only He and He
- 12:46alone can provide. The beginning of the process of
- 12:53becoming converted unto the Lord is the recognition of our
- 12:59absolute need for Him. In the same sermon as I would
- 13:06that you should be perfect, Jesus also said, now listen to
- 13:09this. He also said, Blessed are all
- 13:14they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they
- 13:19shall be filled with the Holy Ghost.
- 13:25And similarly he said, And the light of the body is the eye.
- 13:29If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be
- 13:34filled with light. I can't live without making
- 13:40mistakes. Unfortunately, I prove that
- 13:45every day, but I can, and you can hunger and thirst after
- 13:53righteousness and be filled, be filled with the Holy Ghost.
- 14:00In our weakness and imperfection we will not live perfectly, but
- 14:09we can have an eye single to the glory of God, who is Christ, a
- 14:15singular focus, want that more than anything else and be filled
- 14:21with light. Again, even in our weakness and
- 14:26imperfection. Many years ago, this central and
- 14:32simple truth to believe and follow Christ to the end was
- 14:37indelibly revealed to my sweet wife Jacqueline.
- 14:42I have asked her to share that experience with you now.
- 14:47Now I have to say, this is a very unfair request because
- 14:51Jackie battles with Alzheimer's disease, and when she was given
- 14:57that diagnosis several years ago, she laughed.
- 15:04She said if this means I don't have to give another talk in
- 15:08church, it's probably worth it. She is the living essence of
- 15:17cheerfulness, to be of good cheer and do not fear.
- 15:22And yet here I am, asking her to do it again anyway.
- 15:26But at least we're not in church.
- 15:29Here is a courageous and good soul, the sunshine of my life.
- 15:36Jacqueline Gill Corbridge. About 15 years ago, while we
- 15:51were living in Santiago, Chile, I had a dream.
- 15:59It came to me just before waking, and it was it was very
- 16:03vivid and clearly in answer to the fervent prayer that I had
- 16:09offered while kneeling at the side of my bed only a few hours
- 16:14before. We had a a guest in our home at
- 16:20this time. Sister Julie Beck, the General
- 16:24Relief Society President of the church was was staying with us.
- 16:28Elder Corbridge and I had had spent the previous four days
- 16:33with with her as we as we accompanied her to various
- 16:38church assignments. I marvelled at at the many
- 16:42talents and and abilities, but most amazing to to me was a
- 16:49spiritual gift that seemed to rest upon her whenever she rose
- 16:54to speak. There were no papers in front of
- 16:57her, no notes to to read. She, she taught, she testified
- 17:02all in Spanish out of the the streets of Santiago.
- 17:07She struggled a bit with the with the language, but from the
- 17:11pulpit, she she asked questions, she answered the the responses.
- 17:17She seemed very comfortable. As for myself, learning what
- 17:25Spanish I did know had had been on a long struggle and and I
- 17:31wondered why she had been so blessed while I was so, so
- 17:37lacking in those things. So in in that fervent prayer, I
- 17:41mentioned I I expressed all of this.
- 17:44I asked Heavenly Father why some of his children seemed gifted in
- 17:49so many ways than others. I really wanted to understand
- 17:53why she had been so blessed while I was lacking in those
- 17:59things. In my dream that night, I saw
- 18:03many brightly colorful, cute little houses poking above the
- 18:09clouds high up in in the air. Each little house was part of a
- 18:13tall, narrow, shiny Black Rock. I was hovering above all of this
- 18:20in in the air. Then suddenly I was swooped down
- 18:25to look up close to the foundation of of the little
- 18:29houses. I was surprised to see that this
- 18:32and it was absolutely secure in in that Black Rock.
- 18:36The house was the top of the rock.
- 18:39There was no seeing, no break between the house's foundation
- 18:46and and the rock. A seamless foundation.
- 18:50The house was was the rock. It it was perfectly protected
- 18:55from any winds or storms. I was taken inside the little
- 19:01house just long enough to see there were no furnishings
- 19:06whatsoever except for a phone on the wall.
- 19:09The phone represented the need to call on Heavenly Father
- 19:15through prayer, nothing more important, hence no other things
- 19:22in that house. When I woke from my dream, I
- 19:26could hardly believe what I had just seen.
- 19:31I was filled with gratitude. I had been given a precious
- 19:36gift. I understood very clear what the
- 19:40Lord was saying to me. It is written in Helium in
- 19:44chapter 5, verse 12. Remember, Remember that it is
- 19:49upon the rock of the iron Redeemer, who is Christ the Son
- 19:55of God, that ye must build your foundation, when the devil shall
- 20:01sell forth with mighty winds. When all that hail and its
- 20:07mighty storm shall beat upon you, you have no power over you
- 20:12to drag you down to the gulf of misery, and an endless woe,
- 20:17because of the rock upon which ye have built, which is a sure
- 20:24foundation where and if men build, they cannot fall.
- 20:28As I mentioned, the house in the in the dream was very small and
- 20:35had no furnishings except a phone.
- 20:38But I understood now that although I might not be blessed
- 20:43with as many talents and abilities as other people in the
- 20:48in my life, and now as I struggle with the effects of
- 20:53Alzheimer's disease, I know more than ever that the only thing
- 20:58that really matters is that I I make very sure that my
- 21:02foundation is built on the rock of Christ and he is my
- 21:10foundation. And so I never need fear.
- 21:15Trusting him, serving him, serving my fellow men, doing my
- 21:19best to help build up the Kingdom of God.
- 21:23That's all that matters. The floods and storms of life
- 21:29come to every one of us. It's it's an essential part of
- 21:34the of our mortal experience. But we will not fall.
- 21:39We cannot fall if our house, however grand or or small,
- 21:45become part of that shiny Black Rock with the seamless
- 21:50foundation I saw in my dream. Thank you, Jackie.
- 21:58To build your house on the rock of Christ, to make him your
- 22:04North Star, to believe and follow him to the end is
- 22:08somewhat counterintuitive. As I have said before in a
- 22:15General Conference talk, you might mistakenly think that you
- 22:20can't really follow him because the standard of his life is so
- 22:25astonishing, astonishingly high. What could be higher as to
- 22:30appear unreachable? You might think it's too hard,
- 22:36too high, too much, and beyond your capacity.
- 22:40At least for now, do not, do not believe that while the standard
- 22:45of the Lord is the highest, don't ever think it is only
- 22:50reachable by a select few who are most able.
- 22:54In this singular instance, life's experience misleads us.
- 23:00Our experience in almost every other realm tells us that the
- 23:05highest achievements in any human endeavor are always the
- 23:09most difficult, and therefore only achievable by a select few
- 23:14who are the most able. The higher the standard, the
- 23:19fewer can reach it. That is not That is not the case
- 23:25here, because unlike every other experience in this life, this is
- 23:31not a human endeavor. It is rather the work of the
- 23:37gods. It is God's work and it is His
- 23:42glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of
- 23:49man. And those who engage in God's
- 23:52work are entitled to God's power.
- 23:56There is no nothing else like it, not anywhere, not ever.
- 24:03No other endeavor, institution, plan, program, or system ever
- 24:08conceived by men has access to the blessings of the Atonement
- 24:13of Jesus Christ and the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 24:19Therefore, while the Lord's invitation to follow Him is the
- 24:23highest of all, it is also achievable by everyone, not
- 24:28because we are able, but because He is and because He can make us
- 24:34able to. It is critical that you
- 24:39understand and believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not a
- 24:47self improvement program. You can't improve yourself to
- 24:53realize your full potential on your own.
- 24:58But you are not in this alone. Not hardly.
- 25:04We believe. We believe that through the
- 25:08atonement of Christ. Listen to this.
- 25:14All mankind, everyone living and dead, may be saved by obedience
- 25:23to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.
- 25:27Again, as Paul said, Christ is a measure.
- 25:30Listen to this. Christ is a measure to reach
- 25:35even unto you. Again, those are Paul's words.
- 25:39Christ is a measure to reach even unto you.
- 25:44Reach everyone. And so believe and follow Christ
- 25:52to the end, engaged in His work, to be endowed with His power and
- 25:57receive eternal life in the world to come.
- 26:01That's where we are headed in this series.
- 26:06I invite you, please to stay with me on this journey to
- 26:10believe and follow Christ to the end and stand forever.
